LIVE IN LIVERPOOL (ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN)
Customer Reviews:
A more subdued Echo.......2006-05-22
I bought this DVD because I found it at a local used shop & it was less than the price of the CD. I don't really care about watching live concerts because they're usually rather boring. E&TBM have clearly aged. They pretty much stand in one place & play, no exciting stage antics. They do sound as good as ever. A "more mature" sound might be cliche, but it is an apt description. Ian's voice is very clear & songs flow smoothly, also no ad-libbing or covers on this one, though the track list is a strong one. I would definitely recommend this over the CD, as it has more tracks on it & has the option for 5.1 sound if you have such a set up (I don't, so no opportunity to comment there). The stereo sound track is just fine & this is perhaps the best quality live recording (in terms of sound quality) I have of them. I will second the complaints about the visuals, I didn't buy it to look at & wouldn't really care, except that all the flashing & colors used are really distracting even when you're not watching it, I have to put a black cloth over the screen to hide them, but that's still no reason to opt for the CD over this, however I will knock off a star because they could have done a much better job with the visuals.
Love it but then again I love Echo, Ian & Will.......2005-06-06
I rented it on Netflix and am watching right now. I have seen them in concert 9 times and have been a fan since 1985. I am enjoying the DVD very much and plan to add to my wish list for my upcoming birthday. It's got a good mix of old songs with new. My favorites: Over the Wall, Villiers Terrace and always have to close with Ocean Rain. It's also got some bonus videos and an audio option in case you have surround sound. I just love them and if you're a fan you won't care about the budget quality. I mean come on, it's not like when they were playing huge arenas.
ECHO on DVD..........OH Man Life is GREAT!!!!!.......2005-05-27
Okay here is the complete truth on this DVD. IT is EXCELLANT. WHY?? because it is Echo&The Bunnymen live in concert (minus Les and Pete{God rest his soul}of course) and it is reasonably priced.
Now as for the idiots who have trashed this DVD. I have been a ECHO fan since 1982 and I am now in my forties as IAN & WILL are. I don't know how long you complainers have been fans, nor do I care. However years ago I would have given my right testy for a video of ECHO. Thankfully I was never put to such an extreme loyalty test. People have complanied about everything from the sound to the imagery. DO NOT LISTEN to them. The visual quality while not the best is FINE... No!! it's better than that it's very good and as for the ones who complain about the visual effects and such during songs (i.e. overlays of the bands historical footage, liverpool footage and the concert crowd) this is all done for a reason. It is called atmosphere. It invokes nostalgia in me to see vintage footage of the band. As for the crowd and other overlays, they are meant to help with the feel of the concert. If your idea of a good DVD concert is simply straight forward shots of the band playing on stage and nothing else. Then for god's sake don't buy this video. If however you are a big ECHO fan and want to see great footage of the band (circa 2002) in concert with some mixing here and there of old footage and have a good time reliving some great classic ECHO songs with a few new ones thrown into the mix. BUY IT NOW!!! Trust ME the overlay footage is not annoying as others describe it to be.
Some great songs on here including classics like THE CUTTER, OVER THE WALL, SILVER, MY KINGDOM....etc 22 songs total some great footage of WILL as he plays those classic ECHO chords. The crowd really gets into it in some songs like THE CUTTER and then chills out at other times as they play moody classics like THE KILLING MOON and OCEAN RAIN.
Overall this is wonderful for any ECHO fan to add to there collection. As for IAN'S voice I would say that it has changed a little from years of cigs, but not for the worse. He sounds fine and if you really wantt to enjoy this show watch it on a large screen tv with a good sound system. Don't listen to the naysayers though ,as there are those who will find something to complain about in everything.
BE happy to have a DVD of one of your favorite bands from your youth, slip it into the player, pop a cold one and pretend your standing amongst the crowd. Oh Yeah! by the way check out the beautiful blonde singing in the crowd during NOTHING LAST FOREVER. I want to marry her.
A Long Time In Coming.......2004-09-15
Having been a Bunnymen fan for over 20 years, and after seeing them live three times, I was eager to secure this live DVD. I am now enjoying the DVD for almost two weeks; I am very glad that I was not swayed by the various reviews that slag the quick editing / imagery.
I enjoy this DVD the more I play it. I especially like the mix of songs that were chosen for this production. Hearing some older and lesser known songs such as Villiers Terrace and Zimbo / All My Colours rounds out an excellent playlist.
The projection of old band related images onto the backstage does not distract from the production. Rather, I enjoy seeing the images of the band in younger days. The main focus of the camera remains Ian and Will; their performances become stronger and the show progresses.
A great DVD, great sound........2004-05-27
This DVD is well worth the money. I've seen them live and actually walked out because the performance was very dismal and the sound was terrrible. Florida 1985, what was I expecting?
This DVD has great sound and shows the band as best as can be expected. The layering of images does get annoying but does stays true to the their psychadelic style. They really manged to get a great recording from a live performance. As for the Tom Petty comment, you really should get your hearing checked, LOL.
