I have just received the dvd of the life of Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and to the truth that I continue convincing my self that she is the better lyric soprano that has existed. Kiri is one of those few singers that can sing everything well, everything sings beautifully. She is the best Manon, the best Desdemona, the best Capricio, the best Arabella. For something they say that who can sing Mozart successfully can sing any thing and she is the best Mozarian Soprano ever. That can also manages to give passion and feeling to the Verdi's best roles (Traviata) and to the heroines of Puccini. I recommend this video to everyone who wants to learn what is to sing with the best of the technicks(skills). She is more than a beautiful sound. She is a totally lady in the all sence...

Found it at last!!.......2002-08-22

Several years ago, in a Kansas City motel room killing time, I watched a TV special on the life of Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, and it blew me away. I didn't have a VCR handy, and have been searching ever since, hoping someone had put the program I saw out on VHS or DVD. Through my recent computer purchase and AMAZON.COM, I finally acquired both the VHS tape and DVD. Truly a remarkable story of a magnificent human being, entertainer, and opera singer. I have sung professionally but claim no operatic knowledge or expertise. However, it certainly seems that Dame Kiri Te Kanawa has the richest and most precise voice I have heard; I think she is the female equivalent of Pavarotti--a voice that is so captivating you don't have to be an opera lover to appreciate. It is so much better being able to watch and hear her sing, and learn of her remarkable life as an adopted orphan and her rise to the top. It is an inspiring, warmly human story and the best musical experience as well. Buy it.

A long, well-balanced program of several works by Mozart and Puccini, well-delivered, most notably by New Zealand's Opera legends Dame Kiri De Kanawa and Dame Malvina Major.
I found some minor technical problems in the camera work and edits; and in the synchronization, unless (gulp...pause) there was some lyp-syncing. If that was a necessity, then less close-ups should have been used.
The jacket art is most disagreeable, with a poor split-screen cropping of the stunning Diva.

Worthy cause but not Kiri's best.......2006-07-01

I will always worship Kiri Te Kanawa. She's the reason I pursued vocal studies. I've seen her on the recital stage three times and once at the Met, and I own every recording and video she's ever released. I've even got performances that I taped from such sources as PBS and Today Show, not to mention a couple of radio broadcasts. So, you might say that I'm a fan.

This DVD, The Gala Concert, was taped one week before Kiri's 60th birthday. She's still a class act through her stage presence and obvious love for singing. The voice is not what it was, naturally, and I give her great credit for singing some of her concert standards, e.g. "Depuis le jour," "Chi'il bel sogno di Doretta," etc., that really can test any soprano's range and stamina. By the end of the concert, she still had a voice, which is proof that she knows what she's doing.

I admire her for launching a foundation to nurture the careers of young singers, which is why I didn't mind buying this DVD (supposedly, the proceeds from the sale go toward her foundation), but other buyers should not expect too much from the performances presented on this DVD. I rate it as 4 stars, mainly for the reason the concert was performed. (If it hadn't been a benefit concert, I would have to give it 2 stars simply because I don't care for the other singers featured on the program.)

Dame Kiri's Look At Opera.......2006-10-24

If I have one DVD of Dame Kiri Te Kanawa that would be on top of my shelf to enjoy, it's have to be this one.

I first saw on TV this in 1992, and love it a lot to have it on tape, but, this DVD truly the best ever!

It's mainly Dame Kiri's tour of the Royal Opera House put together with excerpts from various performances from the 1980's, most of them is on DVD. Kiri herself appeared in three excerpts, the 1982 ROH Rosenkavalier Trio, Klange Der Heimat from the 1984 ROH Feldermaus (as does the little clip from Act 3 between Forsch and the conductor, Placido Domingo) and the Act 1 Duet from the 1982 Verona Otello (She does tell the story of how the performance got barely overshadowed by the Italians' victory at the World Cup that night).

There are other excerpts as well, but the true star is Dame Kiri, taking a tour around the ROH (the Lobby, adressing room, the Convert Garden Record Shop, the Costume Shop and the Stage Door outside the ROH), telling about the various performances on the DVD.

All in all, this is one Kiri DVD (Alongside her 1984 ROH Feldermaus that I have on DVD, as well) that I would enjoyed the most.
