Description

Family man George Grieves (Tom Cavanagh of TV's Ed and Love Monkey) checks into Mt. Abadon Hospital for a routine procedure. When he awakens from his anesthesia, something is terribly wrong...with George...with the hospital...and especially with the shuttered East Ward, an eerie lair of secrets, sex and surgical terrors. Raw Feed presents the fear-drenched psychological thriller Sublime, directed by Tony Krantz (executive producer of 24) from a screenplay by Emmy Award winner Erik Jendresen (Band of Brothers). In the tradition of cinema's classic tales of suspense, Sublime will keep you guessing as its puzzle pieces fall into place, and leave you stunned by its astounding conclusion. Graphic, bold, sexual and utterly horrifying, Sublime explores what happens when what you fear becomes real.

1 out of 5 stars ...Actually Ridiculous.......2007-07-02

Having seen Tom Cavanagh in other filmed entertainments, I will admit one thing -- he has finally found a role suitable for his small talent. Lying supine in a hospital bed is a perfect showcase for his far from dynamic abilities.

As for the rest of the film, this expirement is a failure. If you are going to play with the typical horror film and try to come up with something better, you need a few original ideas. Mid-life concerns escalated to paranoia, sinister plots that are met with iron-clad disbelief despite the most sincere attempt at disclosure, the threat of mind-boggling torture...and ultimately the question of where the real terror lies, in the world around us or inside our heads -- these have all been worked over by better craftspeople than those involved with this film.

I am so tired of Hollywood's self-congratulatory insiders attempting to push junk like this down our throats and then tell us we are not wise enough to understand it when we dislike it.

Bad work is bad work. And if there is any more to understand about it than that, it is for the bad worker to do the analysis...not the viewer!

1 out of 5 stars Terrible..........2007-06-06

I don't write reviews because I have better things to waste my time on. However, since I just wasted time by watching this movie, I feel it is my duty to the rest of you people out there to let you know: DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE!!! I read the reviews and thought, "well, I enjoy many movies that a lot of people dislike, so I should be able to enjoy this one too" Don't fool yourself
-----You have been warned!--------

4 out of 5 stars A decidedly bold, almost brilliant work of psychological horror.......2007-05-30

Sublime is a red hot tamale hidden within the predominantly bland cheese pizza of the horror industry. Some like it, some hate it, but no one forgets the unexpected taste of it. I do not like the box cover, though - to me, at least, the image conveys the notion of cutting and scarring, and that made me expect this film to be some kind of slasher film - psychological, of course, but still a slasher. Well, it's not a slasher; I would classify it as horror, though - definitely; it's just a deeply psychological, symbolic type of horror that actually plays quite effectively. I should note that there are a few scenes of a medically gruesome nature, which may have squeamish folks squirming, but this story is not about blood and gore at all. I haven't seen the commentary on the DVD, which is probably both fortunate as well as unfortunate. While I would be very interested in hearing the director and writer explain their insights into the story, the rabble I hear about one of them saying the unfortunate main character of this film somehow represents George W. Bush leaves me happy to enjoy the film as it was, free of any directorial politics. I see no connection whatsoever to my President in this film, and I'm happy to keep it that way (putting such a political spin on the film I saw seems utterly inane from my perspective). This is a rare case when I believe the commentary can actually harm your enjoyment and impressions of a film.

It would be a crying shame for any reviewer to divulge any spoilers about this film, so I'm rather limited in what I can talk about. At its most basic level, Sublime is the story of a man who goes in to the hospital for a routine colonoscopy, but - to his great misfortune - that routine procedure ends up being the polar opposite of routine. Mistakes do happen, you know, resulting in as many as 100,000 deaths a year from what I have read (remember the case of doctors at Duke essentially killing a young girl by performing a heart and lung transplant with organs of the wrong blood type?). George Grieves (Thomas Cavanagh) knows something is wrong as soon as he wakes up. He's sweating like a hog, has an extraordinarily suspicious scar on his lower left abdomen (that would really be taking the long way to the colon), and he's sort of shoved off on the wrong floor across from the mysterious closed wing of the hospital. There's no sign of his family or his doctor - just his nurse Zoe (Katherine Cunningham-Eves) and an exceedingly suspicious male nurse or orderly who makes George increasingly uneasy every time he comes by to change the IV bag. Zoe happens to be everything I would want in a nurse, but even her uber-fine-ness can't make a dent in the anxiety and fear George is suddenly feeling. Little does he know that the worst - and plenty of it - is still to come. Basically, all of his deepest fears begin to realize themselves before his eyes, with virtually every new shock playing out against flashbacks of his fortieth birthday party the night before his "test." Meanwhile, one medical mistake builds upon another, leaving George essentially trapped in a terrifying situation he can't understand. Surreality doesn't even begin to describe the ordeal he has to endure.

Like it or not, the success of a movie such as Sublime hinges almost completely on the conclusion. How many great films have we seen utterly destroyed by a terrible ending? Thankfully, Sublime really delivers at crunch time; while some viewers may successfully predict how it all plays out, the film definitely takes the road less traveled rather than selling out in the final moments. That's really important to me.

Different aspects of this story can and probably will be debated by those who see the film. Personally, I think the filmmakers cast the net of George's fears a little too wide, as I see no reason why race was thrown into the mix. I saw no real context for it, leaving me to interpret it as the product of an agenda on the part of the writer and director - and, for me, that took a little something away from the film. Still, whatever excesses the film might have, they are borne of a remarkable boldness in both storyline and presentation, and that is what makes Sublime such an unforgettable film.

On the most basic level this story has potential? the characters were fairly thought out. well except the main character.
The brother, family, nurses, I was more interested in the brother and kids than the main character.

1 out of 5 stars "Thinking man's horror film" is pretentious mess.......2007-05-20

This film, which is being marketed as a horror movie, is truly AWFUL: pretentious, solemn, boring, confusing, slow, and ending with The Twist that was stale about fifteen minutes after Ambrose Bierce wrote "An Occurence At Owl Creek Bridge" - NOTHING REALLY HAPPENED! It was all a hallucination right before death!

The only truly frightening thing about this amateurish mess is the interviews with director and writer, included on the DVD. When they begin to explain that the movie is an ALLEGORY, and that the protagonist is named "George Grieves" for a REASON (he represents George Bush, for whom the world is grieving), you think for a moment that they HAVE to be joking. And then you realize they're serious - and a deep chill runs down your spine, at the sophomoric silliness of these guys and their ability to deceive themselves about what they've accomplished.

This was a great documentatie. But one thing that I noticed was at the begining of the film. They edited some parts of the movie when there was a mention of a different label. That was the only thing that I did not like. Other than that. I have this on DVD and VHS. I would have to say this is a real good film. I would also recommend if you can get your hands on it the behind the music on sublime. I am a hudge sublime fan. I have over 150 rare recordings. I own all the bootlegs as well. I have hours of sublime video as well.......www.phatchild.com

4 out of 5 stars No Badfish?.......2002-08-28

This dvd is great but it doesnt have my favorite Sublime video, Badfish. Other than that its awesome. It has little snippets of brad and the band being interviewed in between each video. The order goes What I Got (Kahne Version), Wrong Way, Santeria, STP, Doin' Time, Date Rape, and What I Got (Leary Version). Great for any Sublime fan but what were they thinking when they excluded Badfish.

2 out of 5 stars 30 minutes of cheesy music videos.......2002-04-26

i'm a huge sublime fan and before buying this item, i haven't run into a sublime product that i didn't care for. this compilation starts with the kahne version of "what i got" and ends with the leary(acoustic) version of the same song. they're the almost the exact same videos. the only videos worth vewing are the amature ones, "stp" and "date rape". the only reason being that they show live footage of brad and not some super-empossed ghost in the desert or on some road sign. if you're an insane hardcore fan, like me, you're going to buy it no matter what i say. if you don't have the cash to throw away on a couple music videos, save your money and just listen to your cd's....you'll get just as much satisfaction...

Sublime is a red hot tamale hidden within the predominantly bland cheese pizza of the horror industry. Some like it, some hate it, but no one forgets the unexpected taste of it. Good DVD Loved the Preformances. Ecept there is one probem only about 75% of them are in full-length form. So for this reason this tape gets 3 starrs. I've seen many people consider this video a documintary, well I think this DVD is more about the music I mean don't get me wrong there is a great deal of documintary information on the Band, it's just that well on this DVD there seems to be more muscic rather than documintation. I Also like how the director of this film videoized some of the live preformances.

In 1996, Sublime released their self titled major label debut, to critical acclaim. Their unique mix of punk, reggae, ska, hip-hop and everything in between gave the masses (myself included) a new, fresh sound.

What most people don't know is Sublime humble beginnings. They started as a garage punk-band, paying together since childhood. They released a couple of huge indie albums, and had a huge following in the SoCal area. This DVD documents those times, with many members of Sublimes extended family joining in to tell the stories tales lies and exaggerations of one of the great bands of the nineties.

SO GO BUY THE DVD!!!!! Not only will you see some of the great Sublime moments, but there is also clips from LBDA, Dalnoa, Barrington Levy, No Doubt and many more of the bands friends. I have bought it, and there are clips and songs on there that you simply cannot find anywhere else. Great music, great humour, (poor video quality) but great music.

The film is scattered with music videos, and live performances. The clip of "Gimme my Share Freestyle" is unforgettable to the hardcore Sublime fan, and proves what an improvisational scatman frontman Brad Nowell really was. This DVD is essential to every Sublime fan, a great tribute to a man whos musical legacy has yet to be realised.

5 out of 5 stars Great background for the true Sublime fan........2003-02-04

All kinds of cool footage of the crew. Wardo (road crew member) tells great stories of the road. Eric and Bud give ensite to the band that I have not seen anywhere. Kelly Vargas the least known of the Sublime drummers appears in this vid. (which is cool, because him and Eric now are out touring in their new band Long Beach Shortbus). Also Zman of Corn Doggy Dog & The Half Pound (get the album Good Clean Filth which guests Bud and Eric on a hillarious remake of Black Sabbath's Iron Man) give a great lecture in his odd ball lexicon. Also of interrest is Ross and Trey (now in Long Beach Shortbus) doing a guitar only version of the Falling Idols song they wrote and Sublime covered (Check out the Falling Idols live reunion matterial on the Long Beach Records' comp "When Punkers Were Punk and Parents Were Scared". It also has two Shortbus songs on it.) Anyways this video is a must have if you want to try to understand Sublime and its legacy.

4 out of 5 stars Great Document of Sahel Music- but no narration.......2006-06-29

Music documentary of great interest to African music fans.
Shot on location in Niger (Sahel region) by Hisham Miyet. Showcases diverse musical styles: Tuareg electric guitar rock, Sahel Afropop, Bori cult dance ceremonies, Fulani folk, roadhouse highlife-gospel, godje fiddle, griot ngoni/tama/vox/clapping, cowry shell divination, oil drum Zidga ceremony, children impromtu dancing...
The video quality is a bit amaturish- with the feel of an ethnomusiclogists' field recording- but I found it quite compelling.70 minutes.

SUBLIME TRIBUTE:LOOK AT ALL THE LOVE WE FOUND (VARIOUS ARTISTS)

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Sublime homage and fundraiser.......2007-02-27

This is a high energy lively set that features many artists in a tribute to Sublime. The feature itself is more than the music as it also has various artists giving their recollections of the band which reveal interesting anecdotes. Most concurr that Sublime was one of the best bands of the nineties. Some of the versions of the Sublime songs are mediocre by comparison to the originals whereas others are quite memorable. Some of the bands are hardly known whereas others are pretty big. The opening number "Get Out" is an accoustic version that is middle of the road, followed by the Long Beach Shortbus performing "Badfish that sort of sets the tone for this locals only type tribute. It is not until Unwritten Law performs "Saw Red/ Save Me" that the crowd becomes ignited. The highlight performances are the hip-hop infused "Alphabet" by Aerobics, the three mic vocal performance by AWOL One on "Waiting for my Ruca" that is maybe cooler than the original, the way cool reggaesque version of "Pawnshop" by Los Lobos and the closing jam session version of "What I Got." The bonus material is worthwhile as it features another Los lobos version of "Pawn Shop" that was recorded at the release party for the album "Look at All The Love We Found" that features Sublime original Bud Gaigh on drums. Also included in the bonus material a music viseo of fishbones version of "Date Rape" that is pretty funny considering the seriousness of the subject and a photo slide show. Included with this DVD is another CD with live versions and additional recordings of Sublime songs. If you like Sublime I would recommend the excellent "Everything Under The Sun" DVD over this as this disc is more of a novelty featuring interpretations of Sublime songs. However,if you liked Sublime in the nineties than you will probably like these familiar songs reworked by different artists in homage.
