If you are a PSB fan, as I have been since 1986, then this is a must have. I was at their concert in DC a month before this was filmed. A lot of their songs from Minimal are performed as well as such classics as "Heart", "It's a Sin", "West End Girls" and many more. Backed by Sylvia Mason James, Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe give their fans what they ask for, good music and a good time.
The Boys still got it........2007-06-20
This is the Pet Shop Boys on their Fundamental Tour in 2006 in Mexico. I saw them a couple months earlier in Minneapolis and it was the best concert I've ever been too. And I've seen Madonna in 2006 and 2004. Great songs, great performers, and I'm telling you - you should buy this if you are a fan of PSB..

Description
The DVD A Life In Pop is an expanded version of the Channel 4 Pet Shop Boys documentary with a total running time of 140 minutes, including some amazing extra footage, like the duos first ever TV performance West End Girls filmed on a 1984 show called Hits des Clubs, What Have I done To Deserve This? recorded at the 1988 Brit Awards with Dusty Springfield, and also Pet Shop Boys' staggering 1994 Brit Award performance of Go West, where they dressed as miners and were joined onstage by two Welsh miner's choirs as a protest against pit closures. Also featured on the DVD are the videos for their singles: Miracles, I'm With Stupid, Minimal and Numb.

Completey informative and interesting.......2007-07-01
Watched it three times in the course of the first week I owned it. What can I say? We follow Neil and Chris through their childhoods, into the period when they met each other, and follow them through each album.
Inciteful and fun, we see the concepts behind each PSB release, including projects they did for other artists like Liza MInnelli and Dusty Springfield.
The film takes us right through their musical "Closer to heaven", the performance of "Battleship Potemkin", and their latest album "Fundamental"... right up to today basically!
Includes commentary by Liza Minnelli, Brandon Flowers of the Killers, Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters, Bruce Weber, and of course, a lengthy interview with both Boys.
Fabulous for any Petheads collection.
Enjoyable and sincere documentary.......2007-04-20
Usually I have no patience for documenaries but I enjoyed watching this one, maybe because the content is so relevant - the band, after all, is still making fantastic music. As if to prove that, the DVD bonus features include recent videos along some old rare TV perfomances.
The narration goes through candid interviews or rather edited monologues of Chris Lowe and Neil Tennant filmed together and separately (watch Lowe walking on the gloomy beach in his hometown, Tennant's silhouette as London is fading away in the twilight behind the window). It's quite intriguing to see them talk about the essence of their distinctive image, music and career nuances. The timeline is supported, throughout the film, by extracts of their videos and various TV footage. Plus, as usually, you have a little variety of guests: Brandon Flowers of The Killers, Robbie Williams, Jake Shears of the Scissor Sisters, Trevor Horn and others.
The only inconsistency I find is that after the Behaviour era the documentary speeds up its pace and Bilingual, Nighlife (especially) and Release periods are covered quite superficially.
In a way the DVD audiovisually duplicates 'Pet Shop Boys Catalogue', a massive book by Chris Heath.
Trully Fantastic!!.......2007-03-19
Yes, I AM a Huge Pethead, well fan that is not [FAT]. These guys rise to the top - Every Single Time - EST. The fact that I absolutely find their music, lyrics
Clarification on missing video.......2007-03-18
Just to clear up the confusion, I ordered the UK PAL version and noticed that the sleeve omitted listing the Flamboyant video. However, when I played the disc, I was delighted to discover that Flamboyant was indeed on the DVD. Just order the UK version, and you will be fine.
"Let them get a little closer, Neil". "Oh, no, Chris. Let's keep them guessing!!!".......2007-03-12
Every documentary the boys release just reach to feed the great wall of mistery around them.
Out of touch, they have achieved a star quality that reminds me of the legendary 40's and 50's stars.
What would I give to see them jumping into a pool, or chewing a sandwich, or getting drunk with friends...to see they're human and fallible...
I love their work and approach to music, culture and life in general terms, but as I grow older, I would appreciate if the quitted their impenetrability.
The DVD is great, interesting, wit, and their presence impeccable.
Fans won't learn much about them, but it's nice to have fresh news about the most intelligent, refined duo of our time. And, have you noticed how notorious their influence has becomed these days? Is it good they're getting related to Robbie and the old bitch (a.k.a. Madonna)? Not sure...

NOT YOUR EVERYDAY CONCERT VIDEO.......2007-05-14
I remember seeing this concert live many many years ago. My friend and I both commented on how it was totally not what we expected, but still worth the money we paid for the tickets. PSB has always done the unexpected.
A first-rate Performance.......2005-10-24
I was fortunate enough to see the Pet Shop Boys in concert during this concert tour in Chicago, in 1990. This is the same concert that they took on the road around the world, and was very true to the performance that I saw, which was very thrilling. This was no simple concert - the fans of the Pet Shop Boys, having come to expect much from them in terms of quality and innovation, were treated to a concert performance that was part music video, part Broadway/West End music, part modern opera, and part simple, old-fashioned concert singing. Something for everyone, indeed.
The music quality on this is superb - despite being a `live' performance video, the music has been enhanced and corrected to allow for the best possible quality. This is very much a live performance, but with the kind of technical skill and back-up that the music of the Pet Shop Boys requires (Neil Tennant once made the comment that the Pet Shop Boys were probably never going to be able to `make it live' because of the technological requirements for their songs.
The songs include the following:
This must be the place I waited years to leave
It's a sin
Losing my mind
What have I done to deserve this?
My October symphony
I'm not scared
We all feel better in the dark
So sorry, I said
Suburbia
So hard
Opportunities (let's make lots of money)
How can you expect to be taken seriously?
Rent
Where the streets have no name (I can't take my eyes off you)
West End girls
Jealousy
Always on my mind
Your funny uncle
The DVD has a complete performance of the whole concert; those watching the video will notice a modified `Where the streets have no name' because of some sort of licensing dispute with the song copyright owners.
The choreography is stunning, as are the sets, costumes and production values. Eric Watson, who has worked with the PSB more often than any other director for their videos, is also the director here. Other performers include vocals by Sylvia Mason-James, Pam Sheyne, and Derek Green; Scott Davidson and J.J. Belle provide additional instrumental back-up (both have worked with the PSB frequently).
This is a very postmodern performance in many ways, and one that has details that come out only upon repeated viewings.
Pet Shop Boys - Performance.......2005-09-28
I did not think it would be possible to make this show even better, but that has been accomplished by this DVD. It looks and sounds amaizing! and the commentary alone makes this DVD a must for any PSB fan.
Classic '91 "concert" finally on DVD.......2005-08-04
Filmed over the course of three evenings at the Birmingham NEC in 1991, "Performance" features the Pet Shop Boys in top form, showcasing some of their greatest songs. I hesitate to say "singing," as this is, as the title suggests, a performance piece. Lavish sets, garish costumes, and a calvacade of dancers and backup singers make this a needed addition to any PSB fan's collection. While it is an import and carries a bit of a fee, it's well worth buying; wonderfully remastered and presented in 5.1 surround, "Performance" has quickly become one of my favorite live concert DVDs.
The tracklisting is as follows:
This must be the place I waited years to leave
It's a sin
Losing my mind
What have I done to deserve this?
My October symphony
I'm not scared
We all feel better in the dark
So sorry, I said
Suburbia
So hard
Opportunities (let's make lots of money)
How can you expect to be taken seriously?
Rent
Where the streets have no name (I can't take my eyes off you)
West End girls
Jealousy
Always on my mind
Your funny uncle
While "Performance" has been available on VHS for some time, it lacked the inclusion of "Where the streets have no name (I can't take my eyes off you) due to legal reasons; it is great to have the complete show. The weakest track would be "What have I done to deserve this" and that is only due to Dusty Springfield's absence; I fear I've been spoiled by the "Montage" version. That is not to say that this track on "Performance" is terrible; it is just that it is not the same hearing another woman sing backup. Standouts are "Jealousy," "It's a sin," and "We all feel better in the dark."
As with the "PopArt" DVD, the commentary is generous and a kick to watch, giving greater insight into Tennant and Lowe's songbook. Enclosed is an interview with Neil and Chris from '91, as well as one with David Alden and David Fielding.
"Performance" contains perhaps the most intriguing ninety minutes worth of concert footage I've ever been privy to witness; it will require multiple viewings just to take everything in, and even then, it will always seem fresh and new, as if experiencing it for the first time.
The title is a Canadian EMI import of "Performance"!! .......2005-01-11
Nice Going Amazon!!!.In the frequent Amazon.com tradition of either listing music video DVD titles without the name of the artist or listing the artist without listing the program title,Amazon lists "Pet Shop Boys(2004)".What is this program? Well,,I was able to confirm(by comparing the "ASIN" number with the Pet Shop Boys DVD's listed on Amazon's Canadian site, and by ordering & receiving the program though one of the Amazon Marketplace merchants),that this disc is the new expanded EMI/Canada DVD of "Pet Shop Boys-Performance",a 1991 concert program, now with 5.1 surround sound(Dolby Digital or DTS) & Dolby Digital Stereo, plus an artist commentary track, previously unreleased rehearsal footage & a still photo gallery.Fortunately, the song publishing dispute which forced the removal of "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" from the medley with "Where The Streets Have No Name" on the original VHS & Laserdisc releases has now been resolved, and the medley is now presented complete.(on the VHS & Laserdiscs, the lead vocal was mixed out during "Can't Take My Eyes Off You",leaving only the chord changes & background vocal "Ooohs",a sort of Karaoke version!).Song line-up is:This Must Be The Place I Waited Years to Leave","It's a Sin","Losing My Mind","What Have I Done To Deserve This","My October Symphony",I'm Not Scared","We All Feel Better in The Dark","So Sorry I Said","So Hard","Opportunities(Let's Make Lots of Money)","How Can You Expect to Be Taken Seriously?","Rent","Where The Streets Have No Name(Can't Take My Eyes Off You)","West End Girls","Jealousy","Always on My Mind","Your Funny Uncle"

Customer Reviews:
Incredible!.......2007-07-06
I've been a PSB fan for way too many years and when I received this DVD in the mail, well, I was blown away! The sound quality is excellent and the image quality is superb. In fact, this DVD has sent me right back into a PSB phase, inspiring me to search for and collect many of the albums I've missed along the way, (while being into other things.) Neil is such an incredible songwriter and these videos totally express that. I have to say, being 48 years old, it's so wild to see this talented duo grow older throughout the DVD, knowing I'm getting older too. One thing is certain - PSB continue to create great music; music that inspires, elates, sympathizes, and complements just about any mood. I consider them one of the greatest bands of all time and watching this DVD confirms this. You'll love this disc, trust me. Some things are worth so much more than their price tag, and this is truly one of them...
Don't get this for the videos........2007-03-14
I have been a longtime Pet Shop Boys fan since the days of West End Girls. I occassionally see a PSB video playing at the gay bars. So when I saw this I wanted to get it. I don't regret the purchase because I'll always love these songs. But from a visual standpoint some of the videos were very dissapointing. For example the video for "Home and Dry" consist mostly of mice in a subway station with an occasional shot of PSB on a stage. Huh? I will probably play this for background music as opposed to watching it for the videos on a regular basis.

Wow, where to begin. I like a small selection of this band's earliest songs; I didn't know much about their later work; I was curious to see two or three of the videos, and decided to see what this DVD is about. I'd heard that they're lauded as pop icons. Now I pretty much get it.
I was surprised at how great so many of the videos are; apparently controversy surrounds some of these, based on nudity and other images. Who cares. I can't get over how perfectly executed the videos are; how great they are *in* them, always making understated but memorable appearances. Chris Lowe's occasional dancing is simple, great and almost iconically memorable, more so than he seems to be aware (based on the commentary track). They're both perfect. It's ridiculous. Their videos are perfect. I didn't like all the songs, but that's another thing. The execution of each song with accompanying images is what gives this, I feel, five stars.
They seem to be such lovers of humanity, if they had any hand in plotting the images themselves. From the families roaming the street in "Suburbia," to the queues of people, all different ages, sizes and colors in "A Red-Letter Day," to the phenomenal and slightly heartbreaking "Being Boring" -- America, where they weren't as popular in their later years, seems really to have missed out. They look older in the last few videos, and they *still* look perfect. Who are these people?!?!
Many people seem quite picky about the *type* of music they listen to. If this is your type, this is highly recommended. If it's not, you should still see some of these videos. My favorite highlights: Some of the bizarre and beautiful images in the latter part of a series of computer-generated videos; the vaguely gritty New York feel of "I Get Along/Email"; the interesting lyrics to "You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You're Drunk"; and the inscrutable, strange pastiche of scenes, reminiscent of Peter Greenaway's work, which comprise the video for "Always On My Mind," to me one of the most perfect remakes in the history of music, and one of the songs I bought the DVD for. I didn't know 3/4 of the material on here. Lucky purchase. Recommended.
Edit: Dear Messrs. Tennant and Lowe, you deride the video for "Red-Letter Day." I think it's one of your best.
Worth the price for Chris' construction workers outfit alone..........2006-02-18
If you like the Pet Shop Boys this will certainly be a treasure trove of visual stimuli, from their first cheesily inept video for Opportunities to their latest, most technologically sophisticated fare. The big treasure in this collection for me is actually the second version of Opportunities that was directed by Zbigniew Rybczynski and which to my knowledge has never been available anywhere since its inclusion in a brief six-song video compilation titled Television back in the late 1980's. This is along with Being Boring my all-time favorite Pet Shop Boys video. Neil Tennant in his double breasted suit and Chris Lowe in his construction workers outfit (including torn t-shirt that you can glimpse his hairy chest through) rewards endless repeat plays. It's funny and sexy and will make you happy as will the rest of this collection.

I have to admit I really love the Pet Shop Boys, I think their music is great and stuff; however, this concert would have been much easier to enjoy if the sound and picture quality had been improved! The sound quality is not bad but it's diffcult at times to hear Neil Tennant sing, and the picture quality seems unpolished.
The concert itself is good, I had never seen Neil interacting with the audience, he even shook hands with many of them! The music is really nice (you can't imagine how much I love "It's A Sin/I Will Survive" here!) Although there aren't many songs, you can enjoy this concert easily. The documentary is good (I would've liked Spanish or English subtitles, though). All in all, it's not their best performance, but it's good. Come to Peru, Pet Shop Boys! I'll pick you up at the airport!

another "somewhere" dvd???.......2004-09-05
i have no idea what "dol" is supposed to mean, but could this actually be "performance"?
"performance" was brilliant, released on vhs and discontinued years ago, finally being released on dvd in the uk on 09/27/04.
over the years, we on this side of the pond have been skrewed by missing out on adam ant's "antvideo" and dead or alive's "evolution/rip it up live", so i can only hope that "performance" might finally make it to R1/ntsc.
great set list lame concert.......2004-08-08
I 'm a huge PSB fan and was very disappointed by the concert footage, The concert itself was not worth filming. I'm sure actually being at the savoy this performance had some value but watching Neil Tennant smack his hand against his thigh for 90 minutes is an absolute bore especially after seeing Performance their over the top visually and vocally inspired concert. Again it pains to write this but as much as i love them I know when the emperor has no clothes.Check out performance instead.
Fantastic.......2004-04-07
Have most of there albums, but have never seen a concert live or on video. Untill now. It was great. Not as energetic as I though, but never-the-less Fabulous.

Description
Filmed on their 1999-2000 Nightlife world tour, Montage is a unique concert film featuring live footage presented simultaneously over layers of backdrop projections and videos. The main concert footage was filmed over two nights in Germany; this was then augmented with material collected from many different sources, including news footage and filmed footage from shows on the American leg of the tour. The film also utilizes the original projections of the show, plus parts of Pet Shop Boys' videos and other films, including a film of a casting session for a video.
The whole film captures not only the unique nature of the "Nightlife" tour, with its stage set designed by renowned architect Zaha Hadid, but the innovation that runs through all of Pet Shop Boys' work. Montage is a stunning visual experience with a soundtrack of Pet Shop Boys classics, including many of their hit singles.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely Fabulous.......2005-10-30
Just finished watching Montage'The Nightlife Tour and it was, Absolutely Fabulous. Exciting, colourful and so enjoyable. All the image overlays do is add to the excitement of what must of been a fabulous tour. Wish I could have seen them but I'm so glad to have this"Montage: The Nightlife Tour" Yes!!!!!!!!!
Stunning.......2005-09-28
Stunning, simply breathtaking in every way. Visually very exciting, a real treat for fans like me who can't travel long distances to see shows like this. Musically quite adventurous. Many of the songs are performed using different arrangements than the original versions, so it's not like just sitting down and watching promotional videos. I especially like the acoustic portion, and the performance of Young Offender ( I never liked the version on VERY and never listened to the words, which are incredible, so this version is something of a revelation.) This DVD is in stark contrast to PSB's other concert "Somewhere", so if you're expecting lots of backstage footage and a straightforward visual experience, you won't find it here.
Interesting Visuals - But The Sound is WOEFUL.......2005-09-04
The visuals are interesting (when you can see them in the dark), however:
* I might have a defective DVD
* The mixing could be, well, rather awful
* Tennant's voice might be quite weak
I think I'll settle with the second point, coupled a little with the third. Maybe I'm just being harsh because most of the live shows I've seen have been by people trained in theatre/musical stage.
Hmmm.
I'd bump this up to four but _only_ if I could hear the vocals.
D.
They got me !!.......2004-10-03
The Pet Shop Boys Montage Tour is a 2001 DVD with live songs played by the group in their 1999/2000 world tour, but almost all songs come from their US and UK venues. The DVD is as good as it could be and portrays the duo from England as one of the most important musicians from Europe.
In fact, both Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, when wigless, look like any chief executive officer from some multinational company; but they are much more than that. They are professional performers who aptly convey to their loyal audience rather simple songs in the very same way they were recorded in the studio, alternating dramatic and profound melodies and lyrics (e.g., "Young Offender"), with joyful ones overflowing with the exhilarating pleasure of living (e.g., "That is the way life is"), and some even which combines joyfulness with seemingly harmless martial overtones (e.g., "Go West").
The backstage projections of slides, and images from films are a show in itself, specially the ones that stupendously backs the song "Young Offender", inquisitive to any one in the audience and at home.
The Pet Shop Boys are backed by the vocals of the so-called "New York City boys", a group of very competent and energetic black singers (and dancers), and by the stunningly beautiful voice of the black female singer Sylvia Hason-James.
The enthusiasm of the whole group radiates to the public and the outcome is sheer ecstasy almost from beginning to end. This DVD is a must both for fans of the band as for any one who, like myself, listened in the radio the songs from the group but never dared to buy anything from them for home audition. I don't feel disappointed in any way. I got what I wanted.
As a minor flip-side, some of the visual effects are sometimes outdated, as if produced some 20 years ago. But in the end, despite not being a fan of the band, I got totally overwhelmed by the sheer intensity and enthusiasm conveyed by the band.

GoOd, BuT NoT ThEiR BeSt..........2005-11-02

Excellent Show.......2007-05-01
I was fortunate enough to see this Concert twice in Los Angeles at the Wiltern Theater, a few days before this was filmed in Mexico in November 2006.
It was an excellent performance, the Visuals, the neon Cubes, the lights and of course the fabulous Synth Symphonies from Chris and all of his computer Gadgetry.
Neil quoting the L.A. Times "The Circus Ringmaster" delivered his strongest performance as a singer, with every tour he just seems to get better and better and more comfortable and relaxed with the audience.
By far the best Concert show since "The Performance" concert tour of 1991.
A must for any Fan and Pop Music Enthusiast.

"Cubism", the film of Pet Shop Boys' concert at the Auditorio Nacional, Mexico City, on November 14th, 2006, will be released by Warner Vision on May 21st. The DVD is packaged in a choice of two slip case covers (either Chris or Neil) and contains a booklet with an essay by Chris Heath. Both slipcase covers can be seen in the PRODUCT section of this site.
