Now the king of Branson, Missouri, Andy Williams ruled the TV airwaves in the early 1960s, and this compendium of musical numbers culled from the show's archives features some surprisingly astute musical moments. Among others, Williams performs with Bobby Darin, Pearl Bailey, Ella Fitzgerald, Bing Crosby, Jerry Lewis, Sammy Davis Jr., Judy Garland, and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Of course the catch is that to see all of these stars at the peak of their powers, you have to watch them performing with Williams. This will allow you to marvel at how it was that an inveterate WASP, who looked like a clean-cut insurance salesman and sounded like a white-bread Perry Como (if that was possible), became a huge star in the 1960s. It will also give you a glimpse at examples of the now long-gone TV variety format of yesteryear, in which an easy-going host welcomed guest stars weekly to sing pop songs of the day and do skits (catch Judy Garland teaching Andy how to apply clown makeup in pantomime). --Marshall Fine

    5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!.......2007-05-09

These are absolutely the funniest skits he did on SNL and I laughed hysterically! I was really excited about getting this DVD and yet it was such a bittersweet experience when I watched it just knowing he is no longer with us.

4 out of 5 stars The Best of Chris Farley.......2007-05-07

The DVD was ok...I had just hoped it would have lasted longer...but it did bring laughter to my house and that was a good thing...

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite comedians of all time.......2007-02-22

If you like Chris Farley, you'll love this DVD. It's a classic!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!.......2007-01-25

Chris Farley fans will enjoy this "best of" video! Very funny sketches and out-takes. Great reminder not to do drugs at the end.

4 out of 5 stars Makes me tear up every time I watch it [4.5 stars].......2006-08-23

Chris Farley was, in my estimation, one of the best sketch comedians ever. Saturday Night Live greatly improved when he became a cast member. His work was brilliant. Sometimes his size and willingness to do pratfalls were overused, but he was perhaps the best there has ever been at using those gimmicks for laughs.

The video is funny and moving. It constantly reminds you of the tragedy and untimeliness of his death. But, it's harder to find more laughs than you'll get from the DVD.

Too much of Chris's best SNL work -- I mean a whole bunch -- was left out, which explains my 4.5 star rating. That some sketches made the video (e.g. Cher haircare products infomercial) is downright baffling. The producers could have hit a grand slam home run with this set. Instead, they played it safe and boring and went for the triple.

Even so, this is a must for any comedy fan's collection. My 6 year old loves Lunch Lady Land and sings it around the house. Except for some language, it's good for all ages.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-05-14

It was classic Carvey. I loved it. The only thing wrong was it wasn't long enough.

    5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-05-02

Carvey was probably the most underrated SNL member in history. He seems to have been overshadowed by his less talented (not an insult, he's great!) Wayne's World counterpart Mike Myers. I would love to see a volume 2.Carvey created some of SNL's most memorable characters- Church Lady, Garth Algar, George Bush, Hanz & Franz, etc... Definately a great pickup. The "Gerald Ford died today" sketch will have you ROLLING!

    Chad Koenig

5 out of 5 stars Ross Perot only wishes he could do Ross Perot this good!.......2006-11-10

Dana Carvey was among the 2 or 3 most talented performers in the long history of Saturday Night Live, at least in my opinion.

His best work seems to age timelessly as seen in this highlight DVD.

His impression of Ross Perot is entertainment at its best!! No matter how many times I have seen it, I always enjoy seeing it again!

    5 out of 5 stars Can I Finish?.......2006-01-07

Dana Carvey is one of the funniest and most talented comedians to have ever appeared on SNL. Although his film career did not truly take off, like many other SNL alumni to follow, he is among the finest when it comes to comedic material and timing.

Best known for his impressions, his "Best of" DVD is loaded with them. George Bush, Regis, Jimmy Stewart, Ross Perot, George Michael, Johnny Carson, etc... Some of our old favorites are also revisited: The Church Lady, Garth Algar, Hans and a Grumpy Old Man. Whichever is your favorite, you will enjoy them all. This is some of the best material Saturday Night Live has to offer, courtesy of their best impressionist to date.

Also included on the DVD you will find Carvey's original SNL audition tape footage and appearances on Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien.

5 out of 5 stars Funniest of the 'Best of SNL' so far .......2005-01-28

In my opinion, out of the three SNl Best Of's that i have watched so far (Will Ferrell volumes 1 and 2, and Chris Farley) this is the funniest and best yet. Dana Carvey is a brilliant impressionist and is able to transform his own natural voice into anything he wants to. Whether it be The Church Lady, Hans, Garth, George Bush...etc. The other two Best Of's that i watched actually left out some of the more funnier sketches. I believe the sketches compiled into this DVD are the funniest Dana Carvey did. Also, the extras are great too. You can watch Dana's original audition for SNL, watch many outtakes, a sketch that was actually completely cut from the actual show, and his appearances on Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien. Highly recommended for Dana Carvey fans, SNL fans, or just comedian fans in general...Expect to be laughing to the point of tears in this great DVD!

If you are looking for a good laugh, buy this DVD. If not just because you like Adam Sandler, get it for Opera Man and the little camping skit. IT IS SO FUNNY! I loved it!

3 out of 5 stars Keep Your Head Up.......2006-07-11

Adam Sandler is one of the best Snl cast members of all-time. This DvD serves up the Laughs. A few skits include Alec Baldwin, but that's the only bad part of this disc.

    5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2006-03-27

This is a great DVD.If you like Adam Sandler, you'll love this DVD.Not only does it have him,it has appearances by Alec Baldwin,David Spade and Chris Farley, just to name a few.Remember these old sketches?

Canteen Boy,The Gap Girls,Herlihey Boy House-Sitting Service,Zagats? They're all on this DVD.This is a must for not only SNL fans but any fans of comedy.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad. Lot's of great stuff missing.......2006-03-11

    Incomplete!

Despite the content in this DVD isn't bad at all, there is some other great stuff not included, like for example the saint patrick's day song, performed by Bono (A. Sandler's Bono, of course), or the sketch about the "pepper boy", which happens to be one of my favourites.
Also, the extras in this DVD are just stills of the video itself!? Is this suposed to be joke? Not Funny!!!
Anyways, if you do really enjoy Sandler's humor, you may feel dissapointed, not because of the choices included, but for those that were left aside. We need more in one DVD. Too damn short!!

    5 out of 5 stars Priceless!.......2006-02-24

This is so funny, that everytime i watch it, it feels like the first time. Adam Sandler is by far doing his best in this part of SNL. I love the whole thing. This is something you better watch!

5 out of 5 stars Don't get me started.. don't even get me started...........2007-06-27

In my opinion, SNL was at its tops when Molly Shannon was part of the cast. The way she portrays her hilarious characters keeps you laughing throughout the whole DVD. They put together a great compilation of her greatest skits, however, I was bummed when the DVD was over. I wanted MORE! Luckily, the bonus features, such as the Conan interviews are just as funny... especially the one about Gary Coleman! If you enjoy a good laugh then this is a great buy for you!

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointed .......2007-06-25

Very disappointed with this collection of Molly Shannon. There were so many more worthy skits she did on SNL. There was only one skit I enjoyed - the Sally O'Malley skit, but it wasn't the best of this series and probably inserted due to Danny DeVito's appearance rather than the quality of the skit.

The other skits were just not funny.

    3 out of 5 stars A good collection..........2007-06-03

This DVD is, of course, hilarious. Molly Shannon is one of the most talented performers to grace the SNL stage. I think they could have chosen some different skits, though. I can't understand why they chose something like the Blind Date skit over one of the Dog Show episodes or even the teen Goth show, I forget the title. Even though the DVD lacks, somewhat, it's a worthwhile purchase if you enjoy her work.

4 out of 5 stars All because my wife does a great "Helen Madden" "Mary Catherine Gallagher" and "Sally O'Malley"..........2007-04-02

I bought this for my wife last Christmas. She LOVES the above-mentioned characters and does great impressions of them. I have to say the take off of NPR with the Christmas "Schwetty Balls" is still one of the funniest SNL sketches I've ever seen. And sad to say that the DVD's last skit about dating was not one of the sketches I would have included. They should have replaced it with another one with Mary Catherine Gallagher. Don't get me started. ...Don't even get me started! But there is no doubt, Molly Shannon is one VERY funny woman (and so is my wife)!

3 out of 5 stars Missed the Best.......2007-01-09

There are some very funny skits on this DVD, but whoever chose the "Best" certainly had a different perspective than this viewer. There are also a number of duds here, and unfortunately, not a number of her very funny skits.

    2 out of 5 stars It's All About Andy.......2007-01-17

The reason I wanted to buy this DVD was because I really miss the old fashioned Christmas Specials. It seemed they used to go to alot of trouble with the sets, had great guests, and they all just seemed so happy and Christmasy!

Yes, the Osmond Brothers are featured, and they were great to watch, as they are such an incredibly talented family, but there were no other guests except for people that I assumed were part of Andy's family, but who weren't introduced, and so I'm not sure. It really would have been nice to know who they were and how they were related. It would also have been nice to see some other guests, as that is always such a big part of Christmas Specials. I guess I was expecting that.

This is The Andy Show. Lots and lots of close ups of Andy, posing and singing goofy-eyed into the camera. The sets are a hoot, as are the funny styles of the day, which was expected and fun to see, but what wasn't expected was how much Andy comes across as quite full of himself (he really does!), and I don't remember thinking that about him before. We didn't finish watching the whole DVD.

Would I watch it again next Christmas? Well, it will have been a year by then, and I will have forgotten most of the negatives, so yes, maybe on a slow TV night if my husband is out. I don't think he'd watch it again.

Knowing what I know now, would I buy this DVD again? Yes I would, if only to see the Osmond Brothers, but I also would have tried harder to get the Bing Crosby DVD, which says it features other guests on it.

    5 out of 5 stars Nostalgia.......2007-01-16

I bought this for my Mum who is 94. She absolutely loved it and I did too. It's just what we wanted to see - the old Xmas shows with Andy and his brothers and the Osmonds when they were very young - so cute! Brought back many wonderful memories of christmas. Defintely worth buying if you grew up with these shows.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Gift.......2007-01-10

Perfect gift for yourself or others who grew up with Andy Williams and looked forward to his Christmas shows every year!

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Andy Williams Christmas Shows by Andy Williams .......2007-01-10

I'm 49 years old and I was one of the younger people at his Christmas show this year (2006). I won't go into how I wound up at Branson Missouri, but I'll say this - Andy Williams is a freakin' force of nature. He's older now, but his voice and stage presence is increadible. I'm so thankful I got to see him live. This DVD is just great. It is the next best thing to being there. I'm well pleased with my purchase and definitely recomend it to anyone!

4 out of 5 stars Terrific, wish it would go on!.......2007-01-10

This is Great. I wish it showed each show in it's entirety! It brings back old memories of when the whole family sat around one TV! I remember each show that is on this DVD

5 out of 5 stars Bad Boys interactive.......2006-11-10

I'd purchased the VHS version a few years ago, and still decided to get the DVD version because this is a keeper! VHS doesn't keep well in 95% humidity all year round so the DVD was a welcome.

There's a little bit more on the DVD not seen on the VHS - wonderful surprises. I believe there are many reviews of this title from its VHS days, so I'll refrain from commenting along those lines.

Still, great to see the Bad Boy again and again and again... this time around - in a more efficient interactive way!

5 out of 5 stars The're Bad To The Bone.......2005-04-13

As one revwer already pointed out, this is the first dvd to focus on more than one cast member from "Saturday Night Live". Here, Adam Sandler, David Spade, Rob Schneider, Chris Rock and Chris Farley get some of their best roles represented. (Farley, Sandler and Rock also have their own individual best of's as well).

Since this dvd does not represnt the single best moments of one cast member, my review will be structured like my one for the "Halloween" dvd. Here it goes:

Total Bastard Airlines - Spade and host Helen Hunt play ride flight attendants who swiftly shun off their cast members with the phrase "ba - bye". It's a one joke premise, but it's still very funny and a great way to get the ball rolling. 10/10

Il Cantore- even as an Italian, I found this sketch to be uproarious. Spade, Sandler, Farley, Mike Myers and Dana Carvey play sex - crazed waiters at an Italian restaurant who get it on with Kirstie Alley, much to her delight but to the dismay of husband Kevin Nealon. This sketch proves that the old "SNL" theory "stereotypes are funny" works, and this is no exception. 10/10

The Gap Girls - out of these recurring characters' seven appearances, this one is probably my favorite. While Christy (Spade), Lucy (Sandler) and Cindy (Chris Farley) are having lunch at Tater Junction, their invaded by Tammy (Schneider) and Misty (Sarah Gilbert), who poke fun at the girls. This sketch was so funny the whole way through, and even the court tv jokes still seem funny today (and so do the Michael Jsckson jokes, which is agiven). 10/10

Def ER Jam - in this 1996 parody of Russell Simmons' "Def Comedy Jam", Rock plays a foul mouthed nurse who shouts out politically incorrect words at will. How sweet. 10/10

The Richmeister - my favorite "Saturday Night Live" character may well be Schneider's lovable office pest Richard Laymer. Here, he makes his first appearance, annoying coworkers Tom (Mike Myers), Randy (Kevin Nealon), Sandy (Julia Sweeney), Steve (Phil Hartman) and Sting (played by, well, Sting). My favorite sketch. 10/10

Schmit's Gay - a classic ad spoof with Sandler and Farley as housesitters who with one sip turn an old rundown home into a homosexual paradise. The shots of tight bulges andall male conga lines may be a little much, but it's still a 10/10 sketch.

Dick Clark's Receptionist - Spade's breakthrough role was as Dick Clark's snooty receptionist, who made every guest wait and shut them up with his condescending "and you are..."? Here, he shoots ut catty one liners to Roseanne, who proves to be an excellent foil. It got really funny when Phil Hartman came in as Jesus. 10/10

The Chris Farley Show - Chris stumbles through an interview with Jeff Daniels. It was this childilike attitude that made Farley so lovable, and why we miss him so much. 10/10

Canteen Boy - Sandler's recurring character, the 27 year old boy scout, is featured in the controversial scoutmaster sketch with Alec Baldwin. In it, Baldwin spills water on Sandler's sleeping bag, forcing him to share one with him. Baldwin tries to cajole Sandler into having sex with him. Bsldwin goes too far, and Sandler manages to escape by having Baldwin attacked by snakes. This sketch is so wrong on so many levels (the scen where Baldwin sodomizes Sandler may be a little much fro some people) < yet it's so funny. 10/10

Big Toe Song - a tounge in cheek Boys II Men knock - off, Rock and Tim Meadows play lead singers of G - Spot, who perform their hit "Big Toe Song". The video for this song is raunchy as hell and it's hilarious. 10/10

Chris Rock On Update Highlights - bits and pieces of Rock's "Weekend Update" commentaries, all of which are raw and witty. 10/10

Spade In America - from Spade's last episode, he presents a clipshow of his "Hollywood Minute" bits. Hysterical, especially the MC Hamer joke, though I ish they had the Rick Ocasek joke (Hey Rick why the long face?) 10/10

Opera Man Highlights - more clips, this time Sandler as his popular "Update" characterwho sings about the news story. This is possibly the dvd's best sketch, other than the Richmeister. 10/10

Hanukkah Song - Sandler's three part holiday classic made its debut on Decmeber 10th, 1994 on "Weekend Update". This edition is my favorite, especially the line about Ebineezer Scrooge. 10/10

Nikey Turkey Commercial - a parody of those Nike pump sneaker with Rockas a rapping spokesman. Very good. 10/10

The Denise Show - Sandler plays Brian, a man obsessed with his ex - girlfriend and hists a tv show about itt. This sketch even in a rather disturbing sort of way. 10/10

Orgasm Guy - finally, Schneider appears again. Here he plays a man named Ron, a guy who's turned on by everything, from Jonathan Demme films to Setchuan foods. 10/10

Def Jam Magic Show - another Def Jam spoof, with foul mouth from Rock. The dialogue between Tim Meadows and Ellen Cleghorne is especially intersting. 10/10

Zagat's - this at one pint was my favorite "SNL" sketch. Sandler and Farley play the Gelfands, an old Jewish couple. Farley annoyingly reads restaurant choices for their 35th anniversary in the Zagat's guide, much to Sandler's annoyance. David Duchovny was really funny as Farley's sister. 10/10

The Dark Side With Nat X -Rock's most popular recurring character, militant Nat X, appears in a 1996 hosting stint, hassling Jesse Jackson (Darrell Hammond), Tori Spelling (Cheri Oteri) and Mike Tyson (Tracy Morgan). Great way to end it all. 10/10

The bonus sketches are really funny, especially "Sapde In America" with Jennifer Anniston.

There are some sketches that I wish were one here. For example, I wish they included the sketch where Schneider is the owner of the African artifacts shop who sells artifacts used to stash marijuana. Also, a Matt Foley sketch with Farley would have been nice. Also, the majority of these sketches are featured on other dvds, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't buy it.

Overall, this is such a great dvd. Now here's the next dvd collection of "SNL" dvds I would like to see:

"Saturday Night Live: The Women". It would have:

"The Best Of Cheri Oteri" (this aired on tv in Spetember yet hasn't been released yet)
    "The Best Of Jan Hooks"
    "The Best Of Ana Gasteyer"
    "The Best Of Gilda Radner"
    "The Best Of Jane Curtain"
    "The Best Of Victoria Jackson"
    "The Best Of Laraine Newman"
"The Best Of Molly Shannon" (which I already have)

    and

    "Saturday Night Live: The Hosts":

"The Best Of Tom Hanks" (this aired on tv as well but hasn't seen the light of day on dvd)
    "The Best Of John Goodman"
    "The Best Of Alec Baldwin"
"The Best Of Christopher Walken" (which I have)
"The Best Of Steve Martin" (which I also have)
"The Best Of Buck Henry" (this should really please the old fans of the show)

"Saturday Night Live: The First Five Years":

    "The Best Of Dan Akroyd"
    "The Best Of John Belushi"
    "The Best Of Garret Morris"
    "The Best Of Chevy Chase"
    "The Best Of Bill Murray"
    "The Best Of Laraine Newman"
    "The Best Of Gilda Radner"
    "The Best Of Jane Curtain"

And here are just a few random best - of's:

    "The Best Of Kevin Nealon"
"The Best Of Jon Lovitz" (this again aired on tv but is not on dvd)
"The Best Of Phil Hartman, Volume 2"
"The Best Of Will Ferrell, Volume 3" (volume 2 really blew)
"The Best Of David Spade" (which is coming out this fall)

Bottom line: pick up "Bad Boys".

    4 out of 5 stars Beware!.......2005-03-03

This is all funny stuff from some of the old-time SNL crew, but a word of caution; I bought this DVD specifically because I wanted a copy of the skit where Woody Harrelson incites other cast members to take their shirts off at the beach. This is one of the funniest SNL skits EVER, and is on the VHS version, but for some reason it didn't make it onto the DVD. I won't be sending my DVD back, but I was very disappointed at the inexplicable cutting of this skit from the DVD version.

    5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2004-04-03

When one sees the opening sketch, "Total Bastard Airlines", one is suddenly reminded of the wit and humor that "SNL" skits once possessed...This is the first "Best Of" dvd to be devoted to more than one cast member. Here, 5 cast members get their due: Adam Sandler, David Spade, Rob Schneider, Chris Rock and Chris Farley. And it stays true to the title, showing each cast member at their raunchiest.

Sandler seems to get the most coverage, appearing in about half the sketches. His are probably my favorite. I enjoyed every minute of his sketches, from "Operaman" to "Canteen Boy" to "The Hanukkah Song", I laughed my pants off. I only wish they'd included "Cajun Man" and "The Present Song".

Spade gets some coverage as well. In addition to a well - thawed "Hollywood Minute Montage", he captures the audience with his witty sarcasm in "Total Bastard Airlines" and the one in which he plays Dick Clark's snotty receptionist who is able to absorb catchy comebacks from Roseanne Barr.

Scheider does not appear that often, but when he does, you can't help but laugh. He seems to be at his best when he is doing his famed Richmeister (makin' copies) sketch with Sting. But he's even funnier in "The Gap Girls" and "Orgasm Guy".

Unfortunately, Rock and Farley do not get as much coverage, but when they appear, they steal the show. Rock's "Nat X" and editorials are some of the freshest and rawest humor "Saturday Night Live"'s writers ever came up with. Farley outshines the rest with his interview wuith Jeff Daniles and his chubby Gap Girl.

It's especially funny when more than one cast member works together in the same sketch. Schneider and Sandler have a ball playing sex - crazed Italian waiters pining for Kirstie Alley at "Il Cantore" alongside a showstoppingly funny Dana Carvey. And Sandler and Farley are just to funny for this world in the uproarious "Zagat's".

I recommend this dvd to just about every "SNL" fan in the world. It features some extremely funny stuff, some of which is all too underrated. I hope to see a dvd in the future devoted to women of "Saturday Night live", like Jan Hooks, Molly Shannon, and Tina Fey.

From "Wayne's World" to the creepy hilarity of "Sprockets" and its slinky German host Dieter, this 16-sketch compilation showcases Mike Myers in his Saturday Night Live prime. Wayne Campbell and his sidekick Garth (Dana Carvey) are featured in two memorable sketches, jamming with Aerosmith and enjoying a sexy dream sequence with the babelicious Madonna. The Material Girl shows up again as the daughter of "Coffee Talk" hostess Linda Richman (who was inspired by Myers's mother-in-law), in a choice sketch with Roseanne, featuring a cameo by Barbra Streisand which is, as Linda would say, "like buttah."

More obscure sketches show Myers at his most bizarre, charming, and experimental. "Lothar of the Hill People" challenged network censors with not-so-subtle allusions to masturbation and female genitalia, while Myers's penchant for all things British is frequently indulged, including spot-on send-ups of Ron Wood and Mick Jagger. His portrayal of a hypoglycemic, hyperactive 6-year-old--complete with safety helmet and restraining harness--is both outrageously funny and more than a little dangerous. (It's a miracle that guest host Nicole Kidman keeps a straight face as she feeds the "kid" a chocolate bar, with the expected results.) And while other sketches such as "Middle Aged Man" were not likely to follow Wayne and Dieter to big-screen success, they show Myers doing what he does best: conceiving original characters and pushing them to comedic extremes. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Great fun, but could have been better.......2007-01-05

While this was seriously funny it didn't include his funniest stuff. Maybe it's a matter of taste. Either way, this is a great buy.

5 out of 5 stars TOUCH MY MONKEY!!!! TOUCH IT!!!!!.......2006-10-27

This DVD makes me 'as happy as a little GIRRRL!' The DVD whets your appetite, as it includes some of Mike Myers' better skits. 'Sprockets' and 'Cawfee Tawk' is worth the price of the DVD and then some.

2 out of 5 stars Overplaying the Star Aspect.......2006-09-18

I used to own the VHS version of this, but threw it away when I realized that it had very few funny sketches on it. I agree with some of the other reviewers who said that it just seems like they went for the sketches with the most famous people in them. I saw the Coffee Talk sketch with Madonna and Roseanne and Barbra Streisand when it first aired; I didn't think it was funny then and I don't think it's funny now. I found it totally boring. I know there were better Coffee Talk segments.
I found the Wayne's World segment with Tom Hanks and Aerosmith to be pretty boring and not very funny, ditto with the Danny DeVito episode of Simon. The best episode of Simon that there ever was was the one with Macaulay Culkin, hands down.
Lothar of the Hill People is one of the stupidest things I have ever had to sit through, and the thing with Ron Wood, Liam Neeson, and Nell was stupid also.
I loved the Mick Jagger sketch and I think that Philip the Hyper-Hypo is hilarious. I had a cousin who was sort of like Philip when I was growing up, and he used to come over and destroy everything in our house.
The other one that almost made me soil myself the first time I saw it was the British play review with Steve Martin and Dana Carvey and (I think) Eric Idle. That is one of my favorite single sketches in the history of SNL...the world--BANG! the wooorrrllld!

4 out of 5 stars Some classic skits and characters.......2006-08-21

There are some pretty great characters here in this collection of Mike Myers' years on SNL from 1989-1995 and one monologue from his hosting in 1997.
Some great characers featured in here are Wayne Campbell, Dieter in Sprockets, Lothat of the Hill People, Simon, and of course my favorite, Middle-Aged Man. All the skits here are very funny and very entertaining. I highly recommend this dvd.

3 out of 5 stars Saturday Night Live: The Best of Mike Myers (Bonus Edition).......2006-05-31

I really don't know why this is called the bonus edition. I think you find that many people are saying that these are'nt really the best sketches, but from my experience these Saturday Nigt Live Best of Series are not strictly comprehensive. Mike Myers for instance has done so many high quality gut busting sketches that to take a sample of ten means that automatically many favorites don't make it.

It is worth the dollars and cents though. My name is Simon and I like to do drawings with Danny Devito, English play review with Mikey Rooney and Steve Martin, Dito and Sprockets, Nicole Kidman and the boy with the harness who can't have choclate, and some English toothpaste which is good on crackers, and ofcourse Coffe Talk with Roseanne Barr, Maddona and oh my gosh...

Also Lothar of the Hill people and Mike as Mick from the Rolling Stones with Keith Richards played by the real Mick "Mick you ignorant [...]"

Hey how can you go wrong with Mike Myers. If you are looking for a cure all full line up of great sketches you will be disapointed but the DVD is a good apetizer portion.

While hordes are ready to stream into any theater with his name on the marquee, you can actually experience the mother lode of Adam Sandler giggles in the comfort of your own home. This collection of nearly 20 skits from the comedian's 1991-95 stint on Saturday Night Live is an essential tool for anyone who's taking life too seriously. The classic characters are all present and accounted for: Operaman, Cajun Man, Gap Girl ("Didja cinch that?"), Kirstie Alley's exuberant bellboy ("Bellissima!"), and, of course, Canteen Boy, found here in a hilariously unsettling encounter with Alec Baldwin's randy troop leader.

The highlights, however, are the tunes, from "The Chanukah Song" ("Paul Newman's half-Jewish. Goldie Hawn, too. Put them together--what a fine-looking Jew!") to the all-out opus "Lunchlady Land," featuring a bemoled Chris Farley rocking out like no one in a hairnet ever has to the "Slop-Sloppy-Joes" chorus.

All in all, it's a nice trip back through SNL time. When it comes to getting in touch with his inner goofy 8-year-old, Adam Sandler is comedy's big daddy. --Bob Michaels

This dvd all includes all of Sandler's most popular characters: Canteen Boy (in the controversial camping sketch with Alec Baldwin), Lucy Branw the Gap Girl, Cajun Man and of course, Opera Man (the funniest sketches on the dvd). Also, there's his hilarious "Weekend Update" costume suggestions, and the hysterical "Zagat's" sketch with Chris Fraley (I laughed so hard at this one I started to cry).

Of course, the best moments on this dvd are the songs. "The Present Song" is an underrated number that is a love letter to Santa (the joke is that Sandler's Jewish but he's writing to Santa), but it's hilarious. "Lunchlady Land" is a parody of a rock opera and Chris Farley steals the show as a bemoled lunch lady. And of course, there's the classic "Hannukkah Song". There have been three different editions of this song, but the first one is the best.

If I have any complaints, it's that they included the second "Il Cantore" sketch in the hotel. Don't get me wrong, this sketch is very funny, but the first one in the Italian restaurant is much funnier. I also wish the included a Tony Vallencourt and Audience McGee sketch. Other than that, this is an excellent look at Sandler's "SNL" career.

    1 out of 5 stars i hated it.......2005-01-03

    5 out of 5 stars Cool.......2004-10-18

Saturday Night Live - The Best of Adam Sandler is really good. If you hate Adam Sandler dont buy this DVD because Adam Sandler is in every part. I thought it would be a short DVD but it is as long as a lot of movies. If you like Saturday Night Live and Adam Sandler buy this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Omigod! It's The Best Of Adam Sandler!.......2004-07-07

While not as versatile as Dana Carvey or Phil Hartman, Adam Sandler had his own special brand of humor that made him one of "Saturday Night Live's" must - watch comedians during the early 1990s'. Relying more on characters than impressions, he had an intense flair for physcial comedy, something few castmembers were good at.

For a solid 70 minutes of laughter, this dvd can hardly be beat. All of his most popular charcters are here - "Canteen Boy" (in a rather memorable sketch with Alec Baldwin), "Cajun Man", Lucy the Gap girl and , of course "Operaman". Also, there's more than a few one - time characters who make their appearnaces. "Iraqi Pete" seems is hilarious, though has eerie echoes of what's going on in the world today. The bellboy from the "Room Service" sketch (actually, he also appeared in the "Il Cantore" sketch) is also funny. My favorite is Hank Gelfand from the "Zagat's" sketch, though Chris Farley actually does better than him here.
And of course, there's the music: "The Hanukkah Song", "Present Song" and "Lunchlady Song" (though in this one, Farley once again outshines him). Plus, there's his hilarious costume suggestions ("I'm Backwards Man").

I suggest this dbd. I guarantee you'll laugh your pants off. Here's hoping tha Lorne Michaels gets his stuff together and asks Sandler to host the show again soon.

    5 out of 5 stars Magnifico.......2004-01-29

During the years 1986 to 1991, a few new comedians joined the cast of NBC's "Saturday Night Live". Dana Carvey, Mike Meyers, Kevin Nealon, Dennis Miller, David Spade, Rob Schneider, Chris Rock, Victoria Jackson, Phil Hartman, John Lovitz, Julia Sweeney, Chris Farley and a host of others built what is arguably the only ensemble to rival the first five years with Gilda, Dan and Chevy. Another comedian who joined the show around this period was Adam Sandler, then a struggling comedian who (as one reviewer pointed out) had already starred in one movie called "Going Overboard".

"Saturday Night Live - The Best Of Adam Sandler" is an excellent compilation of some of his zaniest characters (and some in which he plays himself singing a song or giving costume suggestions to the unfortunate ones who couldn't find one for Halloween. There are 20 skits here, so I'm going to just the name a few of my favorites.

"Zagats" is my favorite. A bewigged Sandler acts alongside Chris Farley and David Duchovny (both in drag) as an elderly Jewish man who is celebrating his 35 th anniversary with his wife Bev (played by Farley). Sandler's insults and one - liners ("Give me cancer now, God") are among his best work. Liken him to Mr. Roper from "Three's Company", only Jewish.

"Canteen Boy" is a rather provocative skit, with not - so - subtle allusions to sodomy and homsexuality, with Alec Baldwin as a scout master pining for a more than a little uncomfortable Sandler. Very racy, but extremely funny stuff.

Finally, there are four different "Operaman" skits. Here is where you'll hear Sandler zing such notorious figures as Amy Fisher, Lorena Bobbit, George Bush, Hilary and Bill Clinton, Brad Pitt, Tom Hanks and a hilarious song about Pearl Jam in which Operaman expresses his non - gay crush on Eddie Vedder. John Lovitz and Glenn Close also pop as Operaman's brother and his sister - in - law.

Other skits like "The Denise Show", "Grandma" and "The Herlihy Boy"are equally funny and memorable. For me, the only skit not included that I wish they did was "Operaman's Lotto Ticket". But this is still an essential collection, especially if you are a big Sandler fan.

4 out of 5 stars Judy Garland on this highlight retrospective .......2006-07-27

I enjoyed this dvd, but I was a bit disappointed that it didn't include Judy singing. I have seen a clip in a PBS Andy Williams retrospective where she sang an abbreviated version of "Over the Rainbow" with Andy coming in at the end. Her voice was in good shape, albeit a bit husky, and she looked beautiful. Instead of any singing on this disc, she and Andy perform a comedy sketch where Judy attempts to put makeup on Andy to turn him into a clown.

Otherwise, I enjoyed this dvd which highlights some great entertainers. If you like Andy Williams, this is a dvd to purchase.

And, yes, as others said, I would enjoy seeing another disc released with more highlights.

5 out of 5 stars Great songs and a wonderful time capsule.......2004-06-30

I'm too young to remember his TV show, and I've been kind of lukewarm to Williams' records, other than the occasional brilliant song or single. But he really shines in this hour long special. This is mostly songs with some comedy thrown in, so you're not going to get a lot of sketch humor, but you do get performers like Tony Bennett, Bobby Darin, and composer Antonio Carlos Jobim accompanying Williams. Williams more than holds his own with all the performers, and as a bonus he dances with Henry Mancini. You don't get any of his hits other than "In the Arms of Love" and a spooky version of "Moon River" that plays over the DVD menu on an endless loop. My favorite is Williams' duet with Tony Bennett and his solo version of the relatively unknown title song from "The Pawnbroker" which is just excellent.

This is a definite must own if you like classic pop music and/or variety shows and stands up to repeated viewings.

      4 out of 5 stars Great retrospective--but only 3 or 4 seasons represented.......2004-05-14

This is an excellent DVD that hightlights Andy's pick of what he felt were some of his best moments during his TV show broadcast from 1962 to 1971. This is excellent viewing material and just plain fun for both those who are starting to get to be familiar with Andy Williams' work as well as those taking a stroll down memory lane. The quality of the picture and sound is excellent and the guests are very talented people. My only disappointment was that maybe Andy could have added other moments from other seasons of his shows--the majority of the clips are from the years 1965 to 1967. I vote this as a BUY; and I would have given it five stars were there more moments from other seasons added. Maybe this calls for a volume two? GRIN

      5 out of 5 stars A really great voice........2004-02-11

This guy can really sing. When Andy sings "The Way You Look Tonight",he hits notes and holds them as few singers can.
This was truly a classic singing performance. It is so nice to see and hear some of the great performers singing and my only gripe is that this very entertaining DVD should be longer.
      How about volume 2 Andy?

      5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL DVD.......2004-01-22
