When egghead Scotty Smalls moves to town just before the summer vacation of 1962, his first priority is to make friends. He heads to the nearby sandlot only to humiliate himself before the local kids, but star player Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez befriends the awkward boy, teaches him the basics of baseball, and welcomes him to the team. It's a summer filled with camaraderie and fun until Smalls hits his first home run. Problem is, Smalls's home run sends his stepfather's "Babe Ruth" autographed baseball into a neighboring yard that's patrolled by a snarling, slobbering monster called "The Beast." Creativity reigns and hilarity ensues when the boys risk everything to retrieve the ball. A final heroic encounter with "The Beast" and his owner yields some very surprising results. Action, humor, and friendship permeate this 101-minute film appropriate for ages 5 and older. Rated PG due to name-calling and some pubescent behavior. --Tami Horiuchi
Description
It's the early 1960s and fifth-grader Scotty Smalls (Tom Guiry) has just moved into town with his folks (Karen Allen and Denis Leary). Kids call him a dorkhe can't even throw a baseball! But that changes when the leader of the neighborhood gang recruits him to play on the nearby sandlot field. It's the beginning of a magical summer of baseball, wild adventures, first kisses, and fearsome confrontations with the dreaded Beast and its owner (James Earl Jones) who live behind the left field fence. Soon nine boys have become best friends, Scotty is part of a team, and their leader has become a local legend in this hilarious and warmhearted comedy.

My grandson's favorite.......2007-05-22
He is 7. We watched it once awhile ago. He talked so much about that great movie with the big dog that I finally sent him one of his own!
A Classic, lots of laughs!.......2007-05-07
Great movie for a baseball lover or someone who loves to laugh!
I had this on VHS for a bit and was glad when it was releasedon DVD. Now it will last FOR-EV-ERR!
A funny and classic baseball-worship kind of movie.......2007-04-12
Scotty Smalls moves to Los Angeles in the early 60's just two weeks before the 5th grade school year ends, which isn't enough time to make friends before summer vacation. He's still getting used to his new step-father and doesn't know how to catch or throw a baseball, and to make matters worse doesn't even know who the "Great Bambino" is. Some of the neighborhood kids gather every day at "the sandlot," their own personal baseball kingdom, and he tries to casually join them. But it isn't until Bennie Rodriguez, the best and most ardent player of them all, asks him to join and gives him the confidence he needs to learn to play. It makes for the best summer of his life and lifelong friendships, especially when he unknowingly uses a baseball signed by Babe Ruth, and hits it over the fence into the yard of "The Beast," a huge baseball-eating dog.
This is one of those classic baseball-worship movies on a par with "Field of Dreams" and other favorites. Plus, it's a great family movie with few profanities - it's funny and the things the kids do and say resonate with everyone whether or not you grew up playing another sport or in another time period. My kids love to watch it regularly, and I'm impressed with how good some of the children actors are (James Earl Jones also has a bit part at the end). I especially like the scene where they play baseball against the "rich kids" on their real baseball field (mostly because it's the field where I played Little-League as a kid - which wasn't on the "rich" side of town and it's not really LA!), but my kids like the pool scene.
Excellent movie for young baseball players.......2007-03-31
Bought this for my 8 year old grandson for his birthday and although he never heard of it, he absolutely loved it and had to go out and buy the Sandlot 2 right away! Nice, clean, fun with a learning behind it (of course).
NOT A BASEBALL FAN, BUT GOOD MOVIE.......2007-03-26
IM NOT A BIG BASEBALL FAN SO TO ME THIS MOVIE WAS OK. THE ACTORS ARE REALLY GOOD AND THEY MAKE IT AN EXCITING MOVIE TO WATCH EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT A BASEBALL FAN! THE BEST PART IS THE "KISS"

Customer Reviews:
Two thumbs down.......2007-05-22
One of the most ridiculous, unrealistic martial arts movie ever made.
Just look attentively at Eric Robert's stance in the ring. And that idiotic cowboy hat that Chris Penn wearing and sobbing:"What are you counting them for?" after losing the breaking match. Yeah! This is as close to reality as it can be. And the crowd at the bar rooting for the American karate team? Give me a break! Phillip Rhee and the Korean team are the only people who make any sense as far as martial arts in this movie.
Best of the best? No! Worst of the worst!
You want real action? Watch ISKA Strike Force K1.
Good classic martial art.......2007-05-15
If you don't like to always see fake martial arts movies then 'the best of the best' is a good choice to see some real life like fighting techniques, as three of the Korean Martial arts contenders are actually real life champions. Not that violent so you can watc it with your family
Winners in attitude and actions.......2007-05-12
Loved the movies action and morals. Winning means giving YOUR best, not for the recognition or glory but for your own strengths. They all are winners. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie!
Definitely Best of the Best!.......2007-04-19
5 stars for entertainment...
5 stars for inspiration...
5 stars for enjoyment...
As a disabled martial artist inspiration for practice is essential- especially on those days when pain hinders practise. This movie fits the bill! It inspires me to do what I need to do even when things are difficult.
Too bad that 5 stars is the upper limit!
Best of the Best - Phillip Rhee & Eric Roberts.......2007-01-19
Another great movie... could have been longer, but very enjoyable.

Put Charles Grodin together with a 200-pound Saint Bernard and you're likely to come up with some good laughs. In this popular family comedy from 1992 Grodin plays a beleaguered dad who reluctantly lets his kids keep the lost puppy they've adopted. The dog quickly grows into the huge and clever hound named Beethoven. In a marked departure from his nice-guy roles in several Disney comedies from the 1960s and '70s, Dean Jones plays the villainous veterinarian who abducts Beethoven to be a subject in his sadistic animal experiments. The kidnapping sets the stage for a raucous rescue and, of course, an inevitable sequel. Innocuous but harmlessly entertaining, Beethoven is one of those movies that some kids can't get enough of. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
A Movie For All Ages.......2007-01-18
This movie is fun for viewers of all ages. There are a couple of questionable scenes, but I would not have a problem with children watching this movie with me. (I noted in other reviews that I believe parents should always watch movies or TV programs with their children.)
I'm used to Dean Jones as the hero of countless Disney live action films. Here, he plays the villain, and does a chilling job with it.
I would highly recommend this comedy, especially if you want something for the whole family.
I Love It.......2006-07-09
I used to watch "Beethoven" when I was was young, and I was watching it today. We have this and "Beethoven's 2nd" on video, but I agree that "Beethoven" may not be for younger children but I really, really love it.
NOT a family film.......2006-01-29
I found nothing to like about this movie and I can't believe people actually take children to watch it. The father is an absolute jerk and I wanted to smack the mother, who stands like an imbecile while her husband says ugly things to the dog and kids. The filmmakers attempt to redeem him and show what a loving father he is by beating someone up! Riiiighhttt. Throw in a sadistic veterinarian and you have a horror show, not a family film. This is completely unfit for children and should be for adults as well.
love this movie!!!!.......2005-10-10
ok i have ALOT of movies that i love heck i don't really hate anything that much (except hulk and the star trek movies they're wierd). but actually that's suprising though and there's some movies inbetween loving and hating sortof but this movie is very funny especcially the part where beethoven drags the buissness people allover town oops sorry for that but i'm sure by now everyone has seen this though. :)
Good Boy!- Good Movie!.......2005-04-18
This was one of my favorite movies as a kid and now even as an adult I see all the magic that made me enjoy it when I was younger. After watching this movie even the person in your family who is not an animal lover will want to go out and adopt a St.Bernard!
It starts when Beethoven is just a puppy by narrowingly escaping a pet store robbery Beethoven wanders the streets until he enters the lives of the Newton family. After Emily Newton the youngest member of the clan awakes in the morning to see a cute little fluffy St. Bernard puppy in her bed "I dreamt I had a puppy and my dream came true." George and Alice Newton are besides themselves on what to do with the dog- they can't keep it is George's first reaction. It will ruin the yard, destroy the house, it will grow to be enormous, and then it will die and we'll have to replace it and start the whole process all over again. Well George despite, being an a non-dog person decides to keep it for the sake of the kids "It's just temporary" he says. But, soon Beethoven the lovable St.Bernard becomes a member of the family- dealing with all childhood crisises from bullies and to first crushes- as this happens he also gets REALLLY big creating huge messes that George Newton reluctantly puts up with! Well, Beethoven is a very special dog with a remarkable love for his family sensing danger for the Newtons from saving George from the finical ruin of his company to the near death drowning of little Emily. But, suddenly Beethoven finds himself in the grips of an villianious vet who wants to use him to test out a new gun anumition on- only problem is the Newton family isn't going to give Beethoven up with out a fight! Even George loves the creature now.
This movie made my eleven year old host sister roll over on the floor with laughter. And seeing it made me want to go out and adopt a St.Bernard puppy. Charles Gordin is HILLAROUS as the anti-dog loving George in this movie his facial expressions and tone of voice reminded me of my dad's dealings with our family pet. Charles Gordin totally carries this movie. The animals also make this flick really endearing-
All in all this is a movie to rent or buy to watch with your kids over and over again! The perfect choice for family movie night.

This 1994 update on the Lassie legend stars Thomas Guiry as a troubled city kid whose family retreats to the country, where he befriends the famous collie and changes for the better. Conflict develops when a ruthless sheep rancher causes trouble for everyone. Director Daniel Petrie (The Bay Boy) aims only to revive the healthy spirit of previous Lassie films (and the television series) in a new milieu, and toward those modest ambitions--predictable plot and all--he succeeds. Guiry is unusually good in what many young actors would have taken to be just another blossoming-teen part. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Good Lassie movie.......2007-01-10
I first saw this movie about ten years ago, when it came on TV one day. It's a nice update of the Lassie story - a story about a boy and his courageous dog, Lassie. Definitely recommended.
LASSIE 1994.......2007-01-10
THIS STORY TOOK PLACE IN MY CHILDHOOD HOME. IT WAS LIKE GOING HOME. I SAW IT ON TV CHRISTMAS MORNING AND RUSHED TO AMAZON TO FIND IT AND BUY IT. IT IS SO VERY ENJOYABLE TO VIEW SUCH STORIES.
Great service.......2006-11-04
I received this movie shortly after I had ordered it, and it was in mint condition.
Family Entertainment.......2006-08-23
I liked the movie a lot it is very interesting as of and I recomend it for the whole family, or for kids the age of 13/14 and under. Older kids or grown ups can watch it as well but it could be a little bit slow for them at the beginning.
Great Movie.......2006-08-17
Matt is a journor high student who's family is moving from Baltimor to the country farm in Virginia where his late mother grew up. The bitterness and resentment, as well as the goodness, deep inside of Matt's heart, are realisically portayed as he relates to his Dad, his sister, and Laura, his step-mom. Lassie, a stray the family takes in, soon finds her way into the withdrawn boy's heart, and helps him change into the responsible, intelligent, and warmhearted young man he was meant to be. But their new-life in the country threatens to unravel when the construction job that Matt's Dad moved there for falls through. But Matt encourages his Dad to hold onto the farm, and try raising sheep on their pasture land (which is the best for miles around), with Lassie's help. A touching family movie, with convincing and crisp acting, emotion, and drama. Makes you laugh and cry. The slang has changed a lot since the 90's, however, giving this movie a slightly out-moded feel. Is it just me, or do teenagers really say "cool" anymore? I'm a teenager and I still do, but I think most teengers say "awesome" or "rad". But even if this isn't a classic, it's a show I'll always like.

Customer Reviews:
TOM AT HIS BEST.......2005-08-04
Great dvd. Tom performs 12 songs in a roll, without stopping for interviews or other stuff. The color is great. If you add extra bass and treble to this dvd, it is something else. Tom is a great performer, throwing those colorful jackets into the audience and moving to the sounds. You can just tell, when a performer is giving there best. And this dvd shows, that it is the best of Tom Jones.
TOM JONES IS FABULOUS.......2005-04-17
Wish there were more product details for this and other Tom Jones DVD's..... so here's some details. Tom sings 12 songs on this DVD; they are compiled from different episodes of the Tom Jones Show - taped in England I believe - maybe in the 70's or very early 80's. The 12 songs are: green green grass of home, what's new pussycat, you're my world, without love (there is nothing), deliliah, I (who have nothing), love me tonight, she's a lady, say you'll stay until tomorrow, daughter of darkness, i can see clearly now, i can't stop loving you. This DVD is excellent for everyone - really awesome for the Tom Jones Fan. Tom is young and handsome and sexy and his singing is absolutely incomparable.... He is a living legend!
EARLY TOM JONES.......2003-12-20
This DVD seems to be composed of elements of several TV shows done in London, England. The year must have been about 1967. In 1969, I had the pleasure of seeing Tom rehearsing for his "This is Tom Jones" ABC TV show and performing concert segments in Hollywood. He was fantastic and he sang just as strong during rehearsels as he did for air shows. I feel that the television production quality appeared much better in Hollywood than what I saw on this DVD. It would be great to see performances done in America, especially with his guitar player Big Jim Sullivan and his "talking guitar" on DVD. This DVD does contain most of his hits, but the production was simple and almost every song was done with the same choreography.
I have seen Tom also perform in Las Vegas and in Hollywood concerts. I saw him again when he received his star on Hollywood Boulevard. I think that he is at his best in Las Vegas performing with a full orchestra. Next to Elvis, he is probably the best popular singer of our time but frankly, his style in his new songs do not stand up to his old renditions origionally made popular by the late great Otis Redding. This DVD is good for your collection but it does not do justice to the real talent and capabilities of this great performer. My opinion is that the audio on this DVD is just OK compared to for instance, the Glenn Campbell in concert DVD. The video also looks strange to me. Probably it is because of the differences in the English and American scanning system and the early days of color television.
A real singer a living "Legend".......2003-11-07
Excellent quality great picture ,classic songs, better then on tv or VHS but a very nice sharp picture on DVD.but not enough songs I hope there more like it for the canadian customers.Thank you.

BUY 1,2 AND 5. .......2004-12-29
This film well i wasen't sure whether to buy it or not. I didn't like the 3rd, not enough going on in it but i loved the 1st and second beethoven. Since the characters have changed, the film has got from bad good to bad. I liked what was going on in the 1st and second, and the characters they were just right for it. Then the 3rd was ruined by the characters therefore should of kept the same or not made the 3rdat all. Now i'm not so sure about the 4th so if youv'e seen the same as me and are very unsure, hire the 4th. Now the characters names are changed thats a bit stupid unless beethoven was given away or someone was looking after him but the characters have all got different names to the 1st and second like emily the little girl is now sara and sara[daveigh chase] would of suited as an older version of emily. 3 different girls. Literally daveigh chase has played all the way through this film and i love it, shes a good actress and i believe that any film with a good star in that you like, is going to be a good film. Her and her uncle act mostly and the sheriff along with garett the boy mainly, i think maybe they changed the whole storyline from the 2nd beethoven.
Good movie!.......2004-02-17
This was a very good movie--no cuss words, no violence. It is a truly G movie! However, I do not think very young children should see this movie since there are sightings of a "ghost." It turns out to be a logical explanation, but it may scare them.
It is funny, clean and suspenseful-just like a Nancy Drew mystery! This is a good movie and a must-see for kids who like suspense and adventure.
