Product Description
The most virtuosic blues King, big bad Freddie was a spectacular guitarist as well as a first-rate singer and accomplished songwriter. As a transplanted Texan who moved to Chicago in the '50s, Freddie rubbed shoulders with the likes of Buddy Guy, Otis Rush and Magic Sam. Freddie's vast repertoire of blues classics offers cool hooks, hot solos, and foot-tapping rhythms for the contemporary electric guitarist. In this DVD, Host Duke Robillard (Roomful of Blues, Fabulous Thunderbirds) gives invaluable insights into the style of this legendary guitarist. He takes you through a select group of Freddie's greatest songs (Hideaway ? San-Ho-Zay ? The Stumble ? Sen-sa-shun) lick by lick, revealing the inner workings of this master musician. Rare performance footage is also included as a special bonus! 54 minutes.

When it was released during Hollywood's golden year of 1939, The Wizard of Oz didn't start out as the perennial classic it has since become. The film did respectable business, but it wasn't until its debut on television that this family favorite saw its popularity soar. And while Oz's TV broadcasts are now controlled by media mogul Ted Turner (who owns the rights), the advent of home video has made this lively musical a mainstay in the staple diet of great American films. Young Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland), her dog, Toto, and her three companions on the Yellow Brick Road to Oz--the Tin Man (Jack Haley), the Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr), and the Scarecrow (Ray Bolger)--have become pop-culture icons and central figures in the legacy of fantasy for children. As the Wicked Witch who covets Dorothy's enchanted ruby slippers, Margaret Hamilton has had the singular honor of scaring the wits out of children for more than six decades. The film's still as fresh, frightening, and funny as it was when first released. It may take some liberal detours from the original story by L. Frank Baum, but it's loyal to the Baum legacy while charting its own course as a spectacular film. Shot in glorious Technicolor, befitting its dynamic production design (Munchkinland alone is a psychedelic explosion of color and décor), The Wizard of Oz may not appeal to every taste as the years go by, but it's required viewing for kids of all ages. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-07-08

This was one of my favorite movies when I was young, so I bought it for my children to watch.

5 out of 5 stars Wizard of Oz.......2007-06-21

What makes this quintessential fantasy musical the immortal spectacle it is has as much to do with the spirited songs (Garland's signature "Over the Rainbow" was nearly cut!) and heel-clicking dance numbers as it does the phenomenal storyline, lavish Technicolor sets, and punchy performances by the entire cast. For sheer entertainment, you can't beat Ray Bolger's rubbery legs, Bert Lahr's boastful bluster, and Margaret Hamilton's frightening green face, not to mention warbling Munchkins, flying monkeys, an Emerald City, and one highly coveted pair of ruby slippers. King Vidor directed the black-and-white Kansas sequences that bookend the film, but Fleming helmed the rest and took sole credit. Amazingly, the film flopped at the box office, but has since become the most beloved children's classic of all time. If ever a wiz there was, The Wizard of Oz is definitely it.

5 out of 5 stars The Wizard of Oz is the greatest movie ever made.......2007-06-18

The Wizard of Oz is the greatest movie ever made, staring the world's best performer; Judy Garland!

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't be happier.......2007-06-18

My DVD arrived on-time, and it is in perfect condition.

5 out of 5 stars Disturbing for a G rated Movie.......2007-06-14

This G rated classic is also pretty disturbing because it's too scary a movie for little kids. It scared the crap out of my mom. I wasn't scared but it disturbed me the racist anti-pilgrim content in it as well as it's loaded with subliminal messages. It's sequel Return to Oz is even more disturbing containing even more subliminal messages. They should've made this animated because the wicked witch scenes are very unholy and not kosher, not quite on a level with The Exorcist but like The Holwing II. Too campy for me to be genuinely disturbing not it's just unholy and too morbind for it's intended younger audiences. It's still a 5 star classic.

Dennis Potter's astonishing six-part miniseries remains one of the edgiest, most audacious things ever conceived for television. The story tells of one Arthur Parker (Bob Hoskins), a sheet-music salesman in 1930s England. Beaten down by economic hard times and the sexual indifference of his proper wife (Gemma Craven), Arthur cannot understand why his life can't be like the beautiful songs he loves. On a sales trip through the Forest of Dean, he meets a virginal rural woman (Cheryl Campbell) he suspects may be his ideal. Ruination follows. Punctuating virtually every scene is a vintage pop song--lip-synched and sometimes danced out by the characters. This startling innovation makes the contrast between Arthur's brutish life and his bourgeois dreams even more dramatic.

Potter's dark vision digs into British stoicism, sexual repression, the class system, and even the coming of fascism in Europe. But it is especially poignant on the subject of the divide between art and reality. Piers Haggard directs the long piece with deft transitions between songs and story. (It was shot partly on multi-camera video, partly on film.) The cast is fine, especially the extraordinary Cheryl Campbell, who imbues her character with keen intelligence and no small measure of perversity. Bob Hoskins triumphs in his star-making part, bringing a demonic energy to his small-time Cockney, nearly bursting his button-down vests with frustration and appetite. Pennies from Heaven was remade in 1981 for the big screen (with Steve Martin), an interesting, Potter-scripted adaptation; it's one of the reasons the original has been unavailable on home video for so long. --Robert Horton

Description

Dennis Potter's masterpiece mini-series follows the adventures, mishaps, and yearnings of a traveling song sheet peddler on a tight commission as he tries to make dreams fit the promises of the lyrics he carries.

5 out of 5 stars Pennies from Heaven worth the wait.......2007-05-17

I've been looking for this series on DVD for YEARS! It's finally available, and it was definitely worth the wait. Dark, poignant, and funny all at the same time, this series uses poopular music from the 20s and 30s -- often inappropriately -- to express the inner heart of the characters. A young Bob Hoskins plays the lead: a sleezy traveling salesman who is hard to love, except that he does such a wonderful job of playing this character. Writer Dennis Potter is at the top of his form.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best mini-series in the history of media.......2007-02-19

Great acting, great soundtrack, great reissue. God, if only there were another mini-series in the world like this. It's better than you can imagine.

5 out of 5 stars A marvel.......2007-02-03

This decidedly different 'musical' ain't gonna be to all tastes--but if you appreciate a genuinely offbeat concept superbly realised by a first-rate cast, this is for you.

The principals, Bob Hoskins (as the loutish, megalomaniac Arthur Parker), Cheryl Crawford (as the at first winsome, then increasingly hard-boiled Eileen) and Gemma Craven (the hapless and resentful Joan) couldn't be better cast. The bizaare stylisations of the lip-synched musical numbers look positively effortless as handled by them. One can hardly imagine American actors being able to handle this kind of material with their level of ease and versatility.

For me, the real test of this type of production isn't simply how well the leads carry it off--the secondary actors have to be equally good, or the whole thing comes apart. In this respect, especially, "Pennies" excels. Among the most notable of the supporting cast are two British character actors whose work I've admired for years, and who are sadly largely unknown to most audiences in this country. Hywel Bennett as Tom, a sleazy, yet oddly attractive pimp, brings the perfect aura of guttersnipe sexiness and low-bred self assurance to the part. He also, without ever once doing or saying anything overt, convinces the viewer that his character is a menacingly nasty bit of work--it's not at all hard to believe that Eileen would take it on the lam with Arthur rather than risk facing Tom once she's reneged on her deal with him. But for me, the most touching performance comes from the marvelous Freddie Jones, as the headmaster of the school where Eileen teaches. Initially introduced in a manner that suggests a typically English comic Dickensian villain, he transcends the viewer's expectations by being revealed as one of the few--possibly the only--decent characters in this story. Forced to dismiss Eileen over a compromising circumstance that has become known to the school's directors, he shows the sadness of his own disillusionment that has pushed him to treat his young charges with a certain brutality; and in a moment of beautifully underplayed pathos, almost inadvertently reveals his love for Eileen--a love he is well aware she could never(for any number of reasons) reciprocate. All he can do is offer her enough money to help her leave and re-establish herself elsewhere, and wish her good luck. As with Bennett, it's what's left unsaid and underplayed that makes his Headmaster Warner so painfully convincing.

And there are any number of other small gems of performance; Ronald Fraser as a Blimpish member of Parliament who proves himself to be a lot cannier at the blackmail game than the hapless Eileen and Arthur is among the most notable. I can't think of a single poor performance by anyone in the cast--and in a cast of this size, that's no small feat.

If you can get past the initial oddity of the concept, and if you're a fan of truly top-notch, fully realised acting --as opposed to the average histrionics that pass for acting in most American television performances--this strange (and strangely compelling) series is one you will not want to miss.

5 out of 5 stars The Rarest of TV Fare: Intelligence and Originality.......2007-01-09

The late Dennis Potter's writing (as it was in The Singing Detective) is both intelligent and searing. The characters are heartbreakers and the acting, especially by Bob Hoskins and Kenneth Colley is peerless. This is what television could and should be, but almost never is. Compare this to the abominable remake with Steve Martin. Hail Britannia!

5 out of 5 stars Pure Heaven.......2006-07-23

In 1979 Margaret Thatcher was elected prime minister of the British parliament, she had in her sights reform of many institutions, the coal miners were one and the British Broadcasting Corporation was another, throughout the 1980's various Director-Generals came and went and so did a lot of creative programming staff, deals that were once concluded on a handshake would eventually need a committee to close. I only mention this because some might argue that the heydays of British television resided in the 1970's, if one needed any proof of this you could do no better as an example than the BBC's production of Dennis Potter's drama "Pennies From Heaven" a six part serial or what would now be termed a mini series, it contained many innovating set pieces whereby the cast would mime to records of the 1930's period that had been especially chosen to be cued into the soundtrack to enhance the plot, I think it would be fair to say that nothing quite like it had been seen before (or since for that matter,) Starring Bob Hoskins working as a sheet music salesman between the first and second world wars who fantasizes about the songs that he sells and through his infidelity gets caught up in events that eventually overtake him. If "Pennies" were being made today no doubt it would be "cut" a little tighter but the production values and originality still hold up well. Bob Hoskins shot to fame after this and indeed he was quite brilliant as the main protagonist winning a BAFTA nomination for his role as Arthur Parker, In its year of broadcast, "Pennies" won the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Award for Most Original Programme, leading lady Cheryl Campbell who was also BAFTA nominated for her roll as Eileen Everson and Gemma Craven playing Hoskins wife were both superb as was the direction of Piers Haggard a BAFTA winner, however one of the main ingredients and stars of this serial was the choreographer Tudor Davies, who created wonders in one confined space after another.

I sold sheet music myself during the period "Pennies" was made but one can only imagine the business before television when most people had a piano in their front room and writing songs was still an art.

In it's usual brutish way Hollywood having made a flop movie of "Pennies" in 1981 supressed this BBC version for ten years, this reminded me of similar antics in the 1940's when a studio in tinsel town having remade the film Gaslight in 1944 attempted to have all prints of the previous British version of Gaslight (1940) destroyed. These efforts were eventually unsuccessful, though the film was rarely seen for several decades, don't you just admire their business ethics?

But I digress; "Pennies From Heaven" at almost eight hours long means you are going to need more than a few buckets of popcorn plus a case or two of beer, a personal unexpected bonus for me was how I grew to admire the early recordings used in "Pennies" in fact I bought the double soundtrack album on CD it's a real treat. The BBC have recorded a commentary with the director Piers Haggard and producer Kenith Trodd on episodes one and six which I found to be very interesting, from a technical point of view regarding resolution, I do wish the BBC would have used 35 millimeter film instead of their usual choice 16 mill for their external shots, also from time to time the sound levels appeared to be somewhat uneven on my DVD, having said that this should not spoil your enjoyment of what I consider to be a real gem and probably the most original programme ever to come out of British television.

If you believe Freddie is really the greatest then this is more of the best you can get. Only gave 4 Stars due to two interludes of Freddie talking across the tracks. When will DVD Dude Directors get it that we want the artist's stuff without the break-in talk-fest. Keep it for a special features extra. Otherwise just wonderful. Dave

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Blues Performers EVER!.......2006-05-25

The band is incredibly tight and funky, Freddie's playing top notch, singing voice is in fantastic form...just an incredible concert. Taped for a Dallas PBS Station in 73, Freddie and his band give it their all. The best King DVD I have and I can't recommend this one enough. Freddie was truly was of the greatest ever to pick up a guitar. The one thing I don't like about the DVD, is the brief insertion of an interview during "Ain't Nobody's Business". That was stupid...but because the rest is so good, forgivable.

If you don't have any Freddie King on DVD, I strongly suggest you start with this one.

now i know why he influenced so many people!! awesome guitar player, very soulful voice.

5 out of 5 stars A king.......2006-07-31

I'm ashamed to declare that this DVD came to my attention only a few weeks ago-, as this is a real one. In the blues guitar players' world there is a strange distinction between white and black players. I never understood it but the technique and the sound is completely different. Very few guitar players (and no wonder that they are really the great ones) crossed this imaginary line and sound great without any borderlines. Freddie King for sure is one of them- he is so great that you can't comprehend. All of the tracks in this DVD are great, his love of music is obvious, catching, and keep you smiling all the time. This is a must for music lovers: its blues, it's Funk, its rock (a little) and anyways it rocks and shakes you- don't miss it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Performance by the Real King.......2006-05-29

Freddie King is without a doubt one of the best guitarist's ever. He could play with the tasteful economy of notes that people normally attribute to BB King, the funk and rhythm of the then contemporary rock guitarists he influenced...and do it better. Much better.
This DVD is great. The image quality is very good, which is amazing considering the video tape is from 1972 and I doubt anyone even remotely thought of saving it for this purpose. It looks almost as good as some of the video quality from the "American Folk Blues" sets.
Bonus footage in a nice feature, and again is another stand out King performance

5 out of 5 stars Definitive and very powerful. Signature tone exemplified........2005-08-23

Four songs into this concert I am already declaring it the best Freddie King recording I have ever heard. It's not in a surround format, but it still sounds better than I expected for a 1972 outdoor recording. Fans of his studio albums will likely agree that the part of his songs you wait for is the all-too- short solo in the middle. Here these are stretched longer than you will see on any of those television recordings (vide infra) Freddie King always left me wanting more out of every song; in this performance he delivers it consistently. Even on the bonus TV songs, that fat Gibson tone cuts through the limitations of time and stings so good. 5 stars for a legend at the top of his game.

4 out of 5 stars Cutaway Hell.......2004-01-04

The playing on this DVD is superb, rating 5 stars, but the constant and annoying cutaways, sometimes on each beat, are unnerving, and made me close my eyes to avoid dizziness. This is such a shame, as watching Freddie's face as he plays is a trancendental experience. Also, there's almost something wrong about a blues show in blinding daylight. The LA bonus songs are better, that version of Have You Ever Loved a Woman putting Eric to shame, and the camera barely roving. We're lucky to have any Freddie live footage, as it is superior to his studio work.

Product Description

From the moment Parliament s P-Funk Wants To Get Funked Up erupts over the opening of YOUNG SOUL REBELS, we know we re in for a wild ride. The changes keep coming as an interracial sex act in the bushes turns into a murder, setting off a police investigation and waves of controversy in London s black community. The year is 1977, and while some people are busy getting ready to celebrate Queen Elizabeth s Silver Jubilee, others have more important things on their minds. Punks and Teds, National Front and Natty Dreads are fighting in the streets, and the authorities seem more interested in harassing the victim s friends than in solving the crime. A riveting look at the forces of race, class and sex that reshaped the U.K. just before the Thatcher years, Isaac Julien s breakthrough film, which won the 1991 Critics Week Prize at Cannes, is as exciting as ever today. Directed by Isaac Julien and starring Valentine Nonyela, Mo Sesay, Dorian Healy, Frances Barber, Sophie Okonedo.

A sex act between two men of different races in London, 1977 turns into murder which then brings police into it and waves of controversy erupt in the Black community. This is the year of the Queen's 50th anniversary and England is ready to party but there is a fight going on in the streets of the city. "The Punks", "The Teds", "The National Front" and "Natty Dreads" are going at it ad the authorities are more interesting in harassment than in solving the crime. The movie gives us a good hard look at sex, race and class in the years before Thatcher in London through a very different view. It tackles the very delicate issue of men of color being gay in a very uncompromising way. It does not give the expected stereotypical view of gay men and the angle of sexuality in integral to the full plot of the movie.
Chris and Caz run a radio show called "The Soul Patrol" on an underground station which specializes in Jazz Funk. A close friend is murdered in a park and Chris locates a piece of evidence as to identify the killer.
The message of the movie is celebration and integration and the movie which was made in 1991 has just found its way to DVD. It is much more than a gay movie since it deals with so many multi-cultural issues. It is also not a murder mystery. It addresses important social issues of race, class, politics and sexuality. The director, Isaac Julien, examines the social landscape of Britain of the 1970's and shows how it affects youth within the marginalized black culture and looks at the point where certain subcultural borders crash. This collision of cultures is the way to understand this heartfelt film. Even the motive for the murder was based upon this collision. In fact, the murder is almost forgotten about until the end of the film.
Julien has ventured into an area that few care to touch and has done so admirably. Although there are flaws with the acting and the script, taken as a whole "Young Soul Rebels" has something to say and is an enjoyable experience.

3 out of 5 stars Not one of Amicus best productions.......2006-07-15

They Came From Beyond Space,is not one of the best Amicus movie released in the 60s & 70s. But is still worth watching, and adding to your British Horror/Sci-Fi collection. The transfer to disc isn't great, but watchable.
The storyline runs along ok and the acting is passable.
Don't expect too much from Michael Gough,he only appears in the last 10 minutes of the movie.
Apart from all that, give it a try.

3 out of 5 stars So why exactly must the Gods hate Kansas?.......2006-07-11

Don't understand the signifigance of the title of the book this film was based on, as it takes place in England. Nonetheless, it was surprisingly decent find on the Mill Creek Sci-Fi Classics package. Formless aliens trapped on the moon hitch a ride to Earth aboard some meteors (very Zontar, guys ;), and begin to possess the bodies of scientists investigating the crash. One of the scientists has a silver plate implanted in his skull from a car wreck that makes him immune to alien control, and he sets about to find out exactly what the creatures are doing and stop them...but should he? Definitely has a late sixties feel with the colorful sets and groovy music. The same chap who portrays the alien leader co-starred as Alfred in the Keaton/Kilmer/Clooney Batman films. Nothing to go out of your way to see, but good enough to waste an hour on.

4 out of 5 stars "Have You Ever Known Meteors To Land In Formation?".......2006-05-18

This little known gem was made in England in 1967, and is a surprisingly effective and captivating sci-fi film. The movie opens with a very mod lava lamp credit sequence and the whole movie features period music that makes it clear what decade it was made in.

The hero, Dr. Curtis Temple (Robert Hutton) is a brilliant scientist involved with space exploration. Early on there is a formation of nine meteors that crash in a nearby farm field. Upon examination the meteors emit a powerful beam of some sort, which allows aliens to take possession of the humans in the vicinity. The good news is that Temple is immune because of a metal plate in his head. Eventually he notes the farm being transformed into an industrial facility and is quite interested when rockets begin taking off from below the surface of a lake. Much drama ensues before the good Doctor and friends end up on a rocket to the moon where they meet the "Master of the Moon," who has more than a passing resemblance to a Vulcan. It turns out that all these moon people want is for the humans to help repair their ship so they can go to their home planet to die in dignity. In a moment of composure Temple persuades them to eschew violence so they can work together. It all sounds quite hokey, but it actually works quite well.

The acting is generally good (far better than most 1960s-era sci-fi films), the futuristic sets are excellent (although I don't understand the presence in an elaborate paisley upholstered sofa in the rocket launching area), and the pacing is great. The film does have a few quirks. I noted that the film had a feel reminiscent of the great television show "The Prisoner" down to the same style music and the fixation on wacky automobiles. It also struck me that in many ways this film is a very sophisticated update of "Zontar, the Thing From Venus," albeit with considerably more finesse. A couple of the special effects were laughable by today's standards, but the "Crimson Plague" pox and palsy effects were excellent and actually somewhat frightening.

This is a great sci-fi film. It is understated and refined, yet powerful, well paced, and action packed. I recommend "They Came From Beyond Outer Space" to any audience.

3 out of 5 stars Reasonably Good Science Fiction Movie.......2006-03-12

Here is a low-budget science fiction movie that has an interesting story and manages to keep the pace moving along. Mysterious objects have landed in an English farm field. Top scientists investigate the object only to disappear. Soon the area around the farm is cut off from the rest of England, and strange events abound.

One of the first kidnapped scientists is Lee Mason (Jennifer Jayne), whose intimate friend Dr. Curtis Temple (Robert Hutton) becomes concerned and then suspicious about the happenings at the farm. Dr. Temple learns that aliens have taken over the minds of the people at the farm, including that of his beloved. Dr. Temple is immune to their machinations because of the silver plate in his head, received after an auto accident.

Dr. Temple is puzzled about the happenings at the farm. He perseveres and eventually enters the underground facilities built by the aliens, and rescues Lee, only she is quite reluctant to be rescued as the alien within her is uninterested in Temple. Fortunately, Temple and a close friend learn to detect and remove the aliens from their hosts, and they do so for Lee. The trio is off to single-handedly halt the alien invasion! Will they survive to the end of the movie? Why are the aliens launching people to the moon? How can the mysterious plague be stop? These and many more answers await those who watch this movie.

This movie is reasonably good. There were a few technical glitches, but the glitches were sufficiently minor to keep those types of distractions to a minimum. The acting was also reasonably good, always a surprise in a movie of this type. The underground sets were nicely done and generally looked good. One interesting and bizarre aspect of this movie was the vision devices developed to detect the presence of the aliens. These devices were used once when trying to expel the alien from the body of Lee, and then we never see them again. When Dr. Temple and his friend walked into the room where Lee was tied up, they were not looking at Lee and were walking very strangely, which makes me suspect these devices, looking much like military night vision goggles, were impossible to see through.

Fans of the Batman movie may recognize Michael Gough, who plays the Master of the Moon. Gough was in the first four Batman movies as Alfred, beginning with the 1989 film "Batman." Gough has been in numerous other films, such as "Top Secret!" and "Sleepy Hollow."

The ending was an interesting surprise to me, and a little out of character for this type of movie. Scott Whear said he thought the ending seemed a bit contrived. I think the movie went out with more of a whisper than a bang, which made the ending seem a little lame, but at least the director tried something different from the endings of other, similar movies. I recommend this movie to those who would like to watch a decent low-budget science fiction movie about aliens invading the earth.

3 out of 5 stars "The Brains of These Primitives Are Suitable for Our Purposes".......2006-02-06

Some sentient meteorites (actually a bunch of rocks dropped from beyond camera range by one of the crew members) crash into the English country side and take over whatever humans happen upon them. Except for our hero, of course, who has a metal plate in his head and is therefore immune to their...brain rays? His metal plate is the clue to our salvation; it leads to one guy wearing a metal spaghetti strainer on his head, and a woman wearing what appears to be a motorcycle helmet. The entire film is a bit boring, and not particularly worth watching, except for the nifty English touring cars and some engaging countryside. Keep your eyes open for the Petulia Clark look-a-like who works at the local gas (I guess I mean "petrol") station who puts the make on our hero, racily offering him some tea with "some sugar" in it.

5 out of 5 stars Killer video of Freddie in his prime!.......2007-02-03

Excellent collection of performances by a young Freddie King guesting on a local Dallas knock-off of Shindig (but aimed at a black audience). And get this. The leader of the house band is Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown! The show's host is a jive talking white DJ and they have high school girls in go-go boots as dancers. The sets look like they were borrowed from Laugh-In (think "flower power") and the whole thing is just a hoot, but right in the middle of all this weirdness is Freddie his own-self. Complete with pompadour, shiny suit, and sweat (LOTS of sweat), Freddie pumps out some of the rockingest, most soulful blues you will hear anywhere. There are NO bad cuts and you can clearly see Freddie's hands during most of his time on camera. The only disappointment on this DVD is the 1970s performance footage of Freddie playing in Europe tacked (gratuitously) onto the end of the video. Sporting a 'fro and looking bored, Freddie turns in a meandering, perfunctory set. After seeing him absolutely smoking hot in his earlier performances on "The Beat" the later work looks tired by comparison. That said, this DVD is absolutely worth the money. I've watched this video many times and always enjoy it.

3 out of 5 stars Good Performances, Good addition to other Freddie DVD's.......2006-05-29

"A viewer's" review pretty much sums up a lot for me about the audio quality. It's unfortunate that the Montreux show has some tech. problems onstage, because it's the best audience he plays to in this collection. The other two shows are from Sweden, and the audience just isn't in to it compared to the Swiss and other King DVD's from these years. King and the band(tight as always) still give great shows, but the audience is really subdued.
"Live in Dallas" is the still the best Freddie King DVD I've got. This one makes a good companion DVD to the "Sugar Bowl" DVD, which is better.

3 out of 5 stars Freddie King does it again.......2003-10-27

Any Freddie King video is a good thing since he passed away almost 27 years ago. Howeer this DVD is not as good as some others of his. The first set in Montreux (June 20,1973) has Freddie and Co. having trouble with his vocal mic and at times he cannot hear himself sing. The second set in Sweden (December 19, 1974) is much better quality. Freddie plays a small club (almost looks like a resturant) most importantly he plays songs you dont have on other DVDs'. His third set is a carbon copy of the bonus material on the 1966 "The Beat" DVD from Sweden. If you have that DVD you already have this material. If you are a collector of Freddie king music pick this DVD up. It is worth a listen.

54 minutes.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible Instructional DVD.......2005-08-06

Don't waste your money on this DVD. There is no tab and the "closeups" of Duke Robillaird's hands are shot from a poor angle so you can't tell what strings he's fretting. Suffice to say I am very disappointed.

2 out of 5 stars Great Performances But Falls Flat in the Packaging.......2005-08-02

The problem with this series of guitar instructional material is the lack of accurate tab. In the case of this particularly DVD, there is no tab; just a little useless booklet that gives a guide to notation and lists the chords used in the songs. Also, it is advertised as giving a complete breakdown on playing the songs. This is true except for the last one, Sen-sa-shun which is played straight through with the closing credits.
On the positive side, Duke Robillard's performance of the songs is superb and very inspiring, particularly The Stumble. I recommend this to die-hard Freddie King fans and advanced guitar players but the lack of tablature will probably be a source of frustration to beginners.
