Description
The Seventies was the decade when rock became show business. And nobody put on a better show than the Electric Light Orchestra. This double feature highlights both sides of ELO, with their space-age live show in the "Out of the Blue Tour: Live at Wembley" (1978, 62 min.), with no less than nine Top Thirty hits, and the conceptual music videos of "Electric Light Orchestra: Discovery" (1979, 39 min.). When "Star Wars" met Chuck Berry, the result had to be seen to be believed! Songs: "Live" - Standing in the Rain, Night in the City, Turn to Stone, Tightrope, Telephone Line, Rockaria!, Wild West Hero, Showdown, Sweet Talkin' Woman, Mr. Blue Sky, Do Ya, Livin' Thing, Roll Over Beethoven; "Discovery" - Shine a Little Love, Confusion, Need Her Love, The Diary of Horace Wimp, Last Train to London, Midnight Blue, On the Run, Wishing, Don't Bring Me Down.

For the Hardcore ELO Fan.......2006-01-22
I saw ELO's "Out of the Blue" concert when it came to the Oakland Coliseum Arena many years ago. It was one of the best concert performances I have ever seen. This DVD, however, was a disappointment to this ELO fan. The concert footage is excusable given the era, but the audio is not. I'd hope that in the future when someone brings old concert footage to DVD, they put some work into enhancing the audio, if needed. If you're buying this DVD for the "Out of the Blue" concert footage alone, you may be disappointed as I was. If for the additional "Discovery" videos (good audio), then you won't be totally disappointed.
Interesting..........2005-10-12
Well, this dvd has completed my elo collection. I have all their albums and both concert dvds. Having listened to their albums over the last 15 or so years, I always imagined ELO would do an amazing concert.
Pros
- It's good to see some elo footage from the late 70's and the stage spectacle that everyone talks about. I wasn't born until the 80's, so never saw ELO live. However I did see ELO ptII in 1997 and they were amazing, wish they would come back to Australia.
Cons
- They lip-synched on many of the songs
- Sound quality is poor
- Video quality is average, the effects are terrible. However, it was probably acceptable back in the 70s.
Like another reviewer said, the Zoom dvd is much better. Neither this nor Zoom are that watchable. Jeff isn't a very interesting performer. Unless you're a big fan, don't bother with this dvd, get Zoom instead.
Disappointing.......2005-06-17
I've been a fan of ELO for many years now. Before I saw this DVD, this was probably my favorite band, after the Beatles. Not anymore. WHAT is with "Standing in the Rain"? They lip-synched it! Does Jeff Lynne think we're fools? Or was the sound quality (which is poor even on the truley live pieces) that bad that they had to get the album version for audio? I've seen ELO Part II, WITHOUT JEFF LYNNE, DO THIS SONG COMPLETEY LIVE, so WHY COULDN'T JEFF? "Standing in the Rain" is not the only song they do this to. If you listen very closely to the audio, you will hear more strings than you see. The guys are playing, but you don't hear them, you hear a track that was synched up to the performance. If I was one of those guys, I would be pissed, unless the sound THAT poor. Heck, the strings have the best sound quality, just listening to the other insturments, it wouldn't suprise me if it was that bad. On other songs, you hear a lead guitar when Jeff is playing rhythm. Oops! I'm kind of suprised they got away with it. All apologies to Ashley Simpson. I can't believe Jeff Lynne would sink so low. For this, 1 star.
Next, the visual effects are very cheesey.I guess for the late '70's they would have been good, but by today's standards, they're very cheesey. Two stars.
I can't give halves, but if I could, I would give 1 1/2 stars.
If you want to see a good ELO DVD, it doesn't really exist. After watching this, you do see how important Kelly Groucutt really was. He sings on evey song. On some he sings harmony with Jeff from start to finish; on others, Jeff and Kelly take turns on lead vocals: Jeff sings one verse, Kelly sings the next. If anything good came of this DVD, for me it was a deep appreciation for Kelly Groucutt and his contributions to ELO. Zoom is the best DVD for live ELO, but Kelly isn't there and the violin parts are done on guitar (Marc Mann does a wonderful job, by the way, but its just not the same). I would give Zoom (the DVD)3 stars. It's not bad, but its not great. The best DVD with Jeff Lynne is "the Concert for George". It's AWESOME and Jeff does a good job.
If you wan't anything good that's live, but has ELO music, you have to go with ELO Part II. There is no Jeff Lynne, but along with that there is no lip-synching and the strings are real. Besides, Kelly Groucutt and Eric Troyer both do a good job on Jeff's numbers. And, more importantly, the sound quality is GREAT. Try "One Night-Live in Australia" or "the Greatest Hits Live:Encore Collection". ELO Part II has a DVD (of the Australian concert if I'm not mistaken), but I have yet to see it. If you want good sound quality, which is the most important thing right?, you're gonna have to go with ELO Part II, not ELO.
Performance great-sound and quality makes it only 4 stars.......2005-03-31
Jeff Lynne is fabulous as always, but voice hindered a bit by back up vocals in band. This is nice to have in your collection for ELO/classic rock fans. The sound and picture need some remastering, but this is vintage footage w/great performance. I highly recommend the Zoom DVD between the two, simply because it's the greatest concert I've ever seen on DVD or in person, but this "Out of the Blue" DVD does give you a couple of different songs than that one like "Sweet Talkin' Woman", which sounded great. If you want to buy one, buy Zoom DVD, if you like ELO more than a little, buy both. You will be very pleased.
This is excellence, a reminder of QUALITY AND DEDICATION.......2005-02-06
First of all, I cannot blindfold myself and ignore the comments that this "IT" individual left for this item and band below. He says he saw them live. PLEASE, If you are an idiot, do not bother us with your pitiful thoughts, sarcastic cracks and narrowminded views, besides stepping on PROFOUND CONTRADICTION!. If YOU saw them live and they were your "High School LOVE", why are you thrashing the band, the sound and the wardrobe now!!!!
AN OBJECTIVE REVIEW, WITHOUT NONSENSE;
I discovered this band back in 1977. They were in a progression path and road to PERFECTION in the Symphonic Rock genre. They had a unique style without comparison to the rest of bands of the era. The "New World Record" album opened a new age of sound, and they were the masters. For E.L.O. connoisseurs, you will concur they had a string of 5 amazing heaven sent releases, MASTERPIECES after that LP, including Xanadu. This DVD shows you the PROFESSIONALISM, ART, DEDICATION, FEELING and most of all, ----PASSION ---- that was burned on and off stage making music back then, that you DO NOT SEE now a days. For Nostalgics like me, it's a reminder of ALL we have LOST and YEARN, and for Newcomers, IT IS A LESSON TO BE LEARNED IN ALL ASPECTS. It also includes The Videos from the Discovery album, a FABULOUS COLLECTION OF FANTASTIC SONGS! Considering the year it was recorded, the picture and sound are GOOD in the LIVE show, and very good in the Discovery videos. This DVD is a MUST and a 100+ for any E.L.O. fan out there. It even has Tony Curtis acting as MC. IT IS THE CLOSEST TO HEAVEN YOU'LL EVER GET WITH THIS GENRE. THIS IS PURE EXCELLENCE AND QUALITY IN MUSIC AND PERFORMANCE. TOTALLY RECOMMENDED.

Forget the concert, buy it for the Discovery videos.......2007-02-12
The "Out of the blue" concert on here was originally released on VHS many years ago and was apparently overdubbed with the studio recordings to rectify the terrible sound. Essentially the concert was filmed back in 1978 and the sound wasn't captured well. The problem with overdubbing it, people watching the VHS thought they were watching a lip-synched concert.
The concert is now available on DVD and appears to be the original sound except for some songs which clearly sound like they have been overdubbed (Sweet talking woman). Also, the concert is dark and visually unappealing.
Included on the DVD however (as a special feature) are the videos for the Discovery album. WHile they are dated and simple, it makes up for the appalling concert. All of the songs off Discovery are fantastic and worth at least one viewing ... after that, just turn off the TV and listen to this classic album through your speakers.
If you want a good ELO concert DVD, purchase ZOOM which is from 2002 and features Jeff Lynne and new musicians performing all the hits - in DTS sound.
It's all about the "Bonus".......2006-07-27
This is a rare example in which the "Bonus" of a DVD can easily be considered the main feature. Indeed, I bought this collection more attracted to the DISCOVERY videos than to the concert. Why? Basically, because Discovery is one of my favorite albums of all time, and the collection of its videos is something that I watched on TV a lot, although fragmented, at the beginning of the 80's.
This collection of videos represent one of a few cases in which the artist released a filmed version of a complete LP to promote it, something that seemed to have a jump-start in those years (79 through 81) but that regretfully was not imitated afterwards ("Physical" by Olivia Newton John and "Visions" by Elton John are other examples).
Now, the fact that the videos were released in 1979 should tell you that they are very simple. Most of them are "perfomance" videos, it's only the band lip-synching the whole thing in a small stage and a couple of cameras, with some decoration and change of clothes everytime. Obviously, only 4 of the videos were a little more elaborated for commercial release: "Shine a little love", "The diary of Horace Wimp", "Last train to London" and "Don't bring me down". The rest have very basic production values. All the feature is preseted with a high quality image.
Now, after a while, to have Jeff Lynne's face, well, in your face, becomes a little tedious (come on, he's no Olivia Newton John!). Even if that happens to you, you can turn off the TV and just enjoy the music. The whole Discovery program comes in an enhanced (though not remixed) 5.1 dolby sound. I've never heard this album that clear and strong in my life. That's a real plus in having this collection.
Somebody claimed that an out-of-synch problem exists in these videos with the image and the audio, but I had no such problem, and hopefully you won't either (my DVD player is a Pioneer DV 578A).
The only low point that I found is that the closing credits of the "Discovery" feature run at the end of "Don't bring me down", so that video is not visually complete. But it's obvious that this is how the collection was originally compiled, so it's nothing new.
Ah, yes...there's also a concert in this DVD.
Although it's in 5.1 dolby also, the sound is not very good. Instead of "enhanced" it sounds with a little distortion. It's better to hear it in stereo.
The image is good, but not as good as with the videos, making no secret about the year in which the concert was filmed.
And in some songs, the help of a pre-recorded track as a support is evident (it's in those instances in which precisely the sound is more distortioned).
All these minor flaws shouldn't be a problem for any ELO fan who wants to own a collection of old songs live.
As to me, all this don't matter much. You see, for me the concert is a bonus... :-)
Fine program marred by DVD authoring defect on bonus tracks.......2004-12-11
This program would have rated 5 stars,if not for a DVD authoring defect on the bonus program "Discovery".On the 9 "Discovery" videos, there is a sound/picture synchronization problem which causes the sound to constantly run ahead of the picture. The 1990's Laserdisc didn't have this problem. With a little more quality control during DVD authoring, this DVD would have made a fine replacement/upgrade,since its' picture quality is generally better and cleaner than the Laserdisc.Shame on you,Eagle Rock Entertainent!!!Oh well,I got the DVD cheaply through a markeplace merchant for under $7.As an update to the above, when "ICE Magazine" confronted Eagle Rock Entertainment about the problem with this disc,Eagle Rock denied there was a problem, and said that I probably have an older DVD player(I use a Pioneer Elite DV-45A,which isn't that old),but then Eagle Rock concedes that one of the people that works for their DVD authoring house had the same problem.Whether you encounter this sound/picture synchronisation problem may depend on your disc player. You've been cautioned!!
