What a joy !.......2006-05-05
Thank you Morrisey for getting this wonderful reunion happening, and what a good timing with the passing of Arthur just a short month after the show. This show comfirm what a great part of Rock'n Roll history New York Dolls is. Easy to see how they influenced so many greats to come. Hard to belive that they only got to rehearse for like a week or so before the show, a proof of their great talents . I'm sooo glad Arthur got to to experience this before his death. The movie New York Doll is also a MUST ! Enjoy !
Dead dolls don't play .......2006-01-10
Man I hate to get negative when it comes to bands as great as the dolls, who in there day were every bit as cool and influental as the press has reported. This is really not the dolls though. 3 dead members and many years might make one skeptical and it should as this performance is uninspired, tired, and lifeless and a really bad idea and performance. If your an old fan you already know, and new fans looking for a glimpse of what made the dolls great had better keep looking. Crummy crummy crummy crummy crummy crummy crummy crummy crummy crummy crummy crummy crummy stuff!
"Frustration and Heartache was all I got!".......2005-05-21
As a huge New York Dolls fan, I rented this DVD with high hopes. Unfortunately I was left with only frustration and heartache watching it. I was fortunate enough to see Johnny Thunders (original Dolls lead guitarist) and Jerry Nolan (original Dolls drummer) play Max's Kansas City as The Heartbreakers in 1979. They put on one of the rawest and most powerful rock performances I have ever seen. Their guitar/drum combinations influenced many bands that followed the Dolls, including Steve Jones and Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols. "How" I asked myself, "can you have a Dolls reunion without Johnny and Jerry? Wouldn't that be a bit like Mick Jagger reforming the Stones without Keith Richards and Charlie Watts?" Watching this DVD I soon had my answer.
Surprisingly it is Thunder's stand in Steve Conte that saves this DVD from being completely unwatchable. He is an excellent guitarist and has some of Thunder's fire and sound. He even looks a bit like Johnny. Unfortunately he is a little too technically accomplished as is drummer Gary Powell who fills in for Nolan. They are both better musicians than any of the Dolls ever were. Perhaps that is why the sound doesn't quite work. Thunders and Nolan locked into each other like one organism when they played. Nothing fancy, just rock solid, kick-ass rock and roll. Conte and Powell, while good, do not capture that same single-minded intensity of purpose.
News flash for David Johansen and Syl Sylvain. You are neither funky nor chic. In fact you're both just pathetic. Too much prattling between songs guys. Nobody cares. Hey Syl stick your tongue back in your mouth. Nobody wants to see that thing. Oh yeah and stop kissing Killer Kane (r.i.p.). It gets old after the 10th time! Go back to driving a cab. At least you can still do that. I seriously doubt Davie Joe can do anything productive anymore. He certainly can't sing. He's up there looking like a beat up 12th Avenue hooker who's about ready for the mortician's slab. His "I don't care" attitude used to be cool. Now it's just lame. He's up there swallowing St. John's Wort and telling us he's "so depressed." So am I Davie. Watching you.
David Johansen broke up the New York Dolls when he told Johnny Thunders and Jerry Nolan they could be replaced. He finally made good on his threat 30 years later. Where ever Thunders and Nolan are right now they must be laughing their asses off!!!!
I Loved These Dolls.......2005-05-07
I am always amazed how we all perceive things so differently. I rented this DVD from the local video place and loved it. I found this performance to be fun and entertaining. These guys know how to deliver the goods. Crank it up and whip out your hearing aides brothers and sisters.
A mixed bag.......2005-03-30
I "got" the New York Dolls when they first came out. They were tongue-in-cheek showmen with a handful of some hot proto-punk songs, lots of attitude, and plenty of campy, outrageous costumes. Keith Richards saw them and said that they were the worst garage band he had ever seen - totally missing the point as that is pretty much what they aspired to be, if you included a good sense of humor. The group fell apart due to drugs, lack of rehearsals, and living the life of decadent celebrities before they had earned it (a friend of mine was showing old "Hullabaloo" films in his basement for a cover charge back in the seventies and David Johansen tried to get in for free, demanding that it was his right as a pop star. He was told he had to pay like everyone else. Johnasen stormed away.). The performances here are good - Dolls music does not require a lot of technical skills. Johansen looks - to be charitable - unwell.
There is something quite moving here on this disc. Arthur "killer" Kane seems to have found religion since the Dolls, and got a job with the Mormon church. He appeared to be very happy before he died. Johansen wrote a sincere, touching, and articulate eulogy for Kane. It turns out to be the high point of this disc package - an unexpectedly gracious and loving tribute on a disc devoted to the reunion of one of the more notorious bands from the last generation. Johansen deserves a tip of the hat for his gentlemanly gesture.
