Description

Yes is one of the most innovative and successful rock bands of all time with a career that now spans five decades. In 2003 the band made their first appearance at the Montreux Festival, despite having a long association with the town itself (they recorded there frequently in the seventies). It was a triumphant night and is regarded by both the band members and fans as probably the finest Yes gig ever to be filmed. It has been much in demand and is now finally cleared for release.

4 out of 5 stars Tsongas Is Better.......2007-06-19

I own every Yes DVD to date... Montreux is good, but not as good as I hoped it would be. I may have over-hyped it a bit in my mind. I was really looking forward to this release which is basically the same concert that is contained in the Yesspeak "concert slideshow." Unfortunately the sound on this release isn't much better than the Yesspeak version. In addition to the audio letdown, the band just didn't seem to have the energy as they did on the 35th Anniversary Tour. I haven't seen or heard a Yes recording yet that does justice to how powerful and energetic they were playing at the end of the 35th tour. Steve plays well, but doesn't really get animated playing until the end of the concert. In Tsongas, he actually looks like he wants to be there and really rocks. Jon's voice seemed off a bit, they hardly showed Chris, Rick looked good but was back in the mix, and Alan was hardly audible. The recordings of "Southside" and "And You and I" aren't as good as on Tsongas either.

That being said, there are many positives to this recording. "Don't Kill the Whale" was energetic, the solos are fantastic (I've seen Steve play "To Be Over" several times live, and this is the best I've heard), and Awaken is extremely powerful, especially at the end.

All in all it is certainly worth buying, but I would recommend that you buy Tsongas, Symphonic, and An Evening of Yes first if you are looking for the best overall product.

3 out of 5 stars Another Sonic Disappointment from Yes.......2007-06-17

Ok - the good stuff: very well filmed and edited. The video looks beautiful. For you guitar guys and Steve Howe fans; you will love this DVD as Steve's audio off his guitar is the most obvious in the mix and there is more than ample close-up video of his fretboard work.

Now the bad: the audio. Now I have to admit that this is far from the worst Yes DVD from an audio perspective - but that may not be saying much. They seem to have a knack for sub-par audio mixing on their DVD's - in fact, most of them sound terrible given modern standards. So while this is an improvement over their past releases, it still falls far short of what a discerning audiophile and Yes concert goer would like to hear. As mentioned, Steve's guitar is quite prominent with every note fully audiable. Jon's vocals would be next in audiability, but somehow they lack a certain clarity. Rick's keys are set back quite a ways, but still discernable. Somewhat further pushed down in the mix are Alan's drums, and bringing up the rear is Chris' bass. In fact, overall bass is sadly lacking, making the whole affair sound thin. They must like this sort of mix, as far to many of their DVD's can be summed up the same way. But the dynamic range is nothing close to the balance that their live performance has.

I can't think of another band that has released more DVD's than Yes. Other than the studio-based acoustic package, I'm still waiting for one of them to sound decent. Maybe I'm too picky.

4 out of 5 stars ...eh, and who is so currently a standing member of this band now(that I should even bother getting this)???.......2007-06-10

aside from Chris Squire and Jon Anderson this band has had more turnover than a bycycle shop with a free tune-up denighal of service. If it's another Trevor Rabin tant, I think I'll pass(you can tell -I- 've been keeping up with the band!). Though odviously the most professionally talented of the quintet, thu Trev-miester was also the most overbearing. Showed more of the rigid thinking in "Talk" than the others. Big Generator, 90125(90125,though, for the most part a great albumn) showed less and less of the spirited free form and more of rythmn and overdone studio recording. These three I call the "Trevor Rabin-yes's Albumns"(no! not his 3 solos, his Trevor-Yes's!). Union I call a mess. I have been rebuying the old early albumns(Up to and including Drama) for the extras(and a lot of it too! worth the pennies of argument...) though the ones afterward I find over produced and underpassionate, though Owner of a Lonely Heart and "Love will find away" are some of the better quality of the otherwise uppity-coffee house "I'm an avid 80's rock(and roll) fan" pop art blandness. Jon just hates us ya know! fire the jester, take the stand, Chris, Howe, and Jon!

5 out of 5 stars Simples Yes.......2007-05-31

Yes, uma das bandas mais homogeneas dos anos 70 que influenciaram grandes bandas. Existem muitos concertos desta banda, mas este é em Montreux ...

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderfull Montreux surprise for Yes fans!..........2007-05-23

Although the concert start with the playing of a little bit slower (almost imperceptible) tempo version of the magnum opus "Siberian Khatru", The real thing about this wonderfull concert is that those gifted musicians still have the musical skills, the "magic" to play with gracious and dignity, that still keeps me intriged about the thing of age because although the faces of band members reflects some kind of tireness they play really in an emotional way, and Steve Howe smiles again!... By the way, this concert is far much better than the 35th aniversary concert TSONGAS (But the live version of "South Side Of The Sky" is a must!). In Montreux they play again "Heart Of The Sunrise" with a little lack of sound shades: YES is the only band that I've listened twice live that use a lot of sound shades to create volume contrasts and make their music more emotional. the last time that I remember have seen this song in a video was in the 1990 YES UNION concert DVD with the original line up members plus Bill Bruford, Trevor Rabin and Tony Kaye. By the other side, about the kind of tracks approach programme, the great thing is that the band played basically all the Fragile album:

1. "Roundabout", 2. "We Have Heaven", 3. "South Side Of The Sky", 4. A "keyboard solo" by Rick Wakeman, 5. A "guitar solo" by Steve Howe ("To Be Over" and "Clap"); 6. "Long Distance Runaround", 7. "The Fish" (Now a more evoluted track with musical sketches of "Sound Chaser", "Tempus Fugit" and "Silent Wings Of Freedom" in bits), and 8. "Heart Of The Sunrise".

* The programme only missed the Alan White's drum solo (as a remembering of the former Bill Bruford track "Five per cent for nothing").

About the technic questions, the sound is great and the quality image has a perfect definition. This concert was part of the tour of the last studio album MAGNIFICATION, whose orchestral tracks "In The Presence Of" and "Magnification", were played here with well intrumented keyboards by genious creative Rick Wakeman. The rest of the programme is supported by two CLOSE TO THE EDGE tracks ("Siberian Kathru", "And You & I"); one GOING FOR THE ONE track ("Awaken"); one TORMATO track ("Don't Kill The Whale"); the classic easy listening song "I've Seen All Good People" and one acoustic piece played by Jon Anderson: "Show Me". I'd wish that the song "SILENT WINGS OF FREEDOM" had been played too... may be in the next one. Anyway, This concert is a real beauty with an inexplicable kind of hidden emotion in it that will stand a little bellow of the totemic KEYS TO ASENCION DVD. So LIVE AT MONTREUX is truly a surprise and a must for every real YES Fan!...

Great to see/hear Van from years gone by.

5 out of 5 stars Some nice tracks.......2007-06-08

"Bulbs", "Street Choir", and "Troubadours" are worth the price by themselves. Actually, just "Bulbs" alone would be worth it -- what an amazing performance!

4 out of 5 stars With Van You Never Know.......2007-05-24

I'm a serious fan of Van Morrison. I own all of his released albums, and a few bootlegs. I've read a couple of the biographies, and I've seen him live 8-10 times. "Astral Weeks" is among my very favorite albums by any artist at any time. This is the first DVD of Van I've ever seen. I bought it with some trepidation.

This is an artist who walked on stage in London and said, as others have noted, "Let's get this over with," and then gave a wrteched performance, walking off stage after 45 minutes and never returning. This is an artist who, in a Chicago show, blew us out of our seats at the Chicago Opera House with a 2.5-hour set, four encores and a version of "Madam George" that gives me goosebumps 32 years later.

These performances are much better than the London show, but a far cry from what Van can do if he chooses. They are workmanlike performances of a mix of good and indifferent songs. Especially in the 1980 show, the band seems to be much more involved than Van. That's surprising, given the mix of artists involved. I'm also curious why these shows weren't released for 32 and 26 years, respectively. But I suppose we can chalk it up to Van's notoriously bad relationship with his labels and managers.

If you are a Van Morrison fan, these DVDs belong in your library. If you aren't a huge fan, you might buy them for the occasional glimpse of what Van can do. Van Morrison, for all his flaws, is a hugely influential, seminal artist. The DVDs are a glimpse - just a glimpse - why.

4 out of 5 stars Love the 1980 set.......2007-05-14

There are two concerts here: the one from 1974 is a bit more loose than the later one. If you've seen Van a few times over the years, you know that some nights there's no one like him; other nights he's more human than divine. You'll have both experiences here, but at the price and quality of the recording, it's worth picking up.

2 out of 5 stars Boring boring Van yet again .......2007-03-10

I have 9 of Vans CD's, so its not like I dont like the music.

However, on film, another deal. this is one of Vans famous BORING outputs by him, he is flat bored and on cruise control. He's like dont I have someplace else to be? I never could fig out this dude. when your on stage you "go off" every time, people are paying to watch! anyway, its the only recording of him from back then that I know of on DVD, and the band, is great, so I will give it 2 stars for the band. One star off for no closed Caption, like hearing impaired people that can hear music, but lip read allot for words, want to star at that mouth for over and hour? not. camera work is almost all Van, show the band for a sec, then back on Boring VAN!

The band flat out plays. This is one of those dvd's to let let play as your moving about the house cleaning or on the pc and take eye shots of it here and there. No concert dvd can just sit and watch all time, after a few plays thats it as far as sitting and watching. I did go against that one when the Led Zep dvd set came out in 2003, 30 times in 3 months? had to put it away for long time after that whew.

If you have even a passing interest in Stevie Ray Vaughan's peerless mastery of urban blues guitar, you must own Live at Montreux 1982 & 1985. Spaced almost exactly three years apart, these concerts (60 and 93 minutes, respectively) represent the Texan blues god at his fiery best, with Double Trouble (drummer Chris Layton and bassist Tommy Shannon) laying the solid foundation upon which SRV built a Fender-driven sound as fierce as it was perfectly refined. The '82 show was truly "success in disguise," because despite booing from a festival audience lulled by a day of acoustic blues, and the stunned dejection that SRV felt after persevering through a uncompromising set, this was the turning point in SRV's career, leading to post-show encounters with Jackson Browne and David Bowie, who proved instrumental in bringing Stevie's music to an appreciative global audience.

When Stevie, Chris, and Tommy returned to Switzerland three years later, with organist Reese Wynans adding rich new dimension to the Double Trouble sound, the Montreux crowd was primed for a rip-snorting set, and SRV's jubilant response is a joyous thing to witness. One of SRV's favorite bluesmen, Johnny Copeland, appears for a three-song triumph in a set that's uniformly superior and ecstatically energized. Basic three-camera coverage is all you need, although guitar students--for whom this DVD is a godsend--will surely wish for more emphasis on SRV's picking and fretwork. Recording quality is superb in the Montreux tradition, with 5.1-channel remixes that surpass the original masters. A splendid 23-minute documentary features retrospective interviews with Layton, Shannon, Browne, and John Mayer, and the accompanying booklet includes a heartfelt reminiscence from Bowie. Stevie Ray may be gone, but Live at Montreux ensures that his gold-standard legacy will endure. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble - Live at Montreux 1982 & 1985.......2007-05-23

A snapshot into history. His first appearance at Montreux booed and unappreciated. A few short years later at his second appearance, cheered as an icon of Texas blues. In between not only did he become famous but he cleaned up his life and it shows in his personality onstage. Throughout, his music is unmatchable.

5 out of 5 stars The Kind!.......2007-04-04

Great dvd. A must buy for any Stevie fan!I was lucky enough to see him live twice. These two performances brought back great memories.

5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......2007-04-02

I have played these over and over for years. I guess I'll never get tired of them. A few glitches in the 1985 production, but other than that as representative of SRV as we are probably ever going to get. Any fan of SRV or this sort of music has to have these, they are historic. One comment on the booing in 1982. It really reveals what jerks we can all be. If you don't like a performance, like it's too loud for you widdle ears; leave. To sit there and boo a performance like that (or any performance) only tells the world what an ignoramus you are. If the jerks had left that performance, SRV probably would have played on for at least another hour. 40 minutes is pretty short for him. So in the end what they did is rob the rest of us of another hour of that 1982 performance for all time. Thanks! There is a DVD of Buddy Guy at the same festival a couple of decades later (in the Buddy Guy 70 boxed set) where some dufus shouts out "play some real blues" at the end of the performance. Amazing! At least in the Buddy Guy case the crowd got on the heckler.

5 out of 5 stars A Double-Dose of Historic Documentation .......2007-03-19

Stevie Ray Vaughan was a six-string force of nature with his Fender Stratocaster. He was playing small clubs in Texas with drummer Chris Layton and bassist Tommy Shannon in 1982 when someone with connections heard them and declared "you need to play Montreux". Sooo... without a record, a recording contract or any name recognition outside of the handful of people who had heard them playing in Texas, they headed over to Europe where they were booked at the famous Montreux Jazz festival on the same day as several acoustic stars. Stevie and Double Trouble hit the stage with their electrified cyclone and played to a rousing chorus of boos. Stevie, talented as he was, dressed like a cross between a Texas Gunslinger and a New Orleans Pimp, and the crowd reaction ranged between indifference and total hostility. Were they good? Take a listen... the accompanying and extremely informative documentary features interviews with Slater and Layton, along with Jackson Browne, John Mayer, and a few others who knew what happened that day. SRV and DT burned that stage to the ground. They had honed their 3-piece Texas Blues to a fine edge and they unleashed their power on that crowd. The "music fans", too stupid to notice the genius in front of their very eyes, hadn't yet been told by radio disc jockeys who they should like.... so they didn't like SRV - yet. Of course there were musicians there too, though, and the word spread like wildfire through Jackson Browne's band.... and David Bowie.... and soon all the Montreux musicians were down in the musician's lounge listening to the kind of band that makes musicians tell other musicians "come here.... you've just GOT to hear THIS!" (I had the same experience the first time my brother played their first recording - which was made as a result of this very concert.) David Bowie had to figure out a way to get this guitar genius on his CD and in his band. (Listen to Stevie's wailing guitar on "Let's Dance".) Jackson Browne offered the contractless trio the opportunity to record in his studio. They made their way out to California and basically just recorded their live set in the studio. THAT recording became "Texas Flood" and all of a sudden SRV was not an unknown...

Two albums and a keyboardist later, Stevie returned to Montreux in 1985 as a "conquering hero" of sorts and although I would hesitate to say that they sounded better in the '85 concert, it is certainly gratifying to see them received with open-armed enthusiasm. In the '82 concert they only played about 52 minutes. In '85 they turn it on for a hot hour and a half.

Both of those concerts are more than worth a listen - and this fantastic double-disc set includes both concerts, plus the documentary. This is 5-star all the way.

4 out of 5 stars Stevie Ray is sorely needed in today's cookie-cutter music scene.......2007-03-14

Is it just a coincidence that when Stevie Ray Vaughan died in 1990, American music as a whole suddenly seemed to die with him?? Few performers in the last 15 years have possessed the overwhelming firepower and talent that this man had. The 1990's sadly became the decade when real talent and originality became a thing of the past as manufactured pop, rock, and country clones took over the national music scene like a bad disease.

In the first concert presented in this set, we witness a crowd of closed-minded morons mercilessly booing a guy with far more talent than anybody on the charts today could ever hope to have. It was nice to see that at least some in the audience were cheering and applauding in appreciation of SRV's performance, and you gotta love how Stevie Ray and the band totally ignored the boos throughout the entire show and just kept on rockin! It is sad to think that if Vaughan were the opening act for one of today's hot new stars, he would likely receive the same reaction that he got from the Montreux crowd that night in 1982. Would today's pop/metal/rap fans appreciate a guy who only needs "talent" to captivate an audience instead of smoke, lights, mirrors, or half naked girls???

The two concerts on this DVD are significant in SRV's career and are presented with good sound and picture quality, although the far away camera shot during the encore of the 1985 show is disappointing. Both shows consist of solid performances, but neither show truly captures Stevie Ray at his absolute best. The 1982 appearance is probably the best of the two, although Stevie's dynamic stage presence that is evident in other live footage seems a little withheld here. The 1985 show features the expanded Double Trouble line-up with Reese Wynans on keyboards, but Stevie was visibly near the peak of his drug abuse when this concert was filmed, and his performance seems to lack some of the fire and passion that is clearly seen in the 1983 El Mocambo show and the two Austin City Limits appearances.

The segment with blues legend Johnny Copeland is the definite highlight of the 85 concert! Copeland makes the most of his three-song set, holding his own with Stevie Ray in both the guitar and vocal departments. Stevie and Johnny's duet on the down and dirty blues masterpiece "Tin Pan Alley" is probably the best performance on the entire DVD. Copeland's soulful, tortured vocals in the second verse of this song is a lesson in the art of blues singing at its finest! With so many flashy blues-rock guitarists throughout the years, it seems that great blues singing has become a lost art these days. Only the very best blues singers are able to deliver the kind of vocal performance that Johnny Copeland does here. He also cuts loose on some hot solos with Stevie Ray during a rockin' version of "Look at little sister".

Live footage of the great Stevie Ray Vaughan is still pretty rare which makes these two concerts a must-have for any blues fan, even if the El Mocambo show and the Austin City Limits appearances are a little better. We can only hope there are at least one or two more live shows from SRV's short career that will make it to DVD someday.

That's not exactly a bulletin, considering that Carlos Santana and his New Santana Band, a crack outfit to begin with, are joined by several of the greatest jazz musicians of their generation, including saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianists Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, and guitarist John McLaughlin--a recipe for brilliance that's fulfilled throughout the two-disc, three-hour show. If there's a mild surprise here, it's that the titular "hymns"--written by John Lennon, Bob Marley, Marvin Gaye, Bob Dylan, and Stevie Wonder, and described by Santana as "spiritual songs that bring healing and illumination to all of humanity"--do not provide the show's most compelling moments. There's no doubt that "Just Like a Woman," "Imagine," "Redemption Song," "What's Going On," "Exodus," "Get Up, Stand Up," and others are timeless classics; but while the combination of these compositions and the people playing and singing them is certainly intriguing, the actual performances are straightforward and not especially scintillating (vocalists include Angelique Kidjo, Barbara Morrison, Patti Austin, and Santana singer Andy Vargas; Steve Winwood shows up for a version of Timmy Thomas' "Why Can't We Live Together"). Far more exciting are extended versions of Mongo Santamaria's "Afro Blue," Pharoah Sanders' "Light at the Edge of the World," Miles Davis and Joe Zawinul's "In a Silent Way," and John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" (one of several tunes featuring the sax legend's son, Ravi). McLaughlin never quite catches fire, but Hancock, Shorter, and Corea are astonishing, turning in solos that are marvelously unpredictable and adventurous models of chops and invention. It's all beautifully shot and recorded, making Hymns for Peace a must-have for fans of these extraordinary musicians, Santana included. --Sam Graham

1 out of 5 stars Clip bad advertrising for the DVD.......2007-07-04

OK, I will admit it - have not watched the entire video, so it is perhaps unfair to comment, but I will base my opinion on the clip they have provided here. It is so awful, that I would not want risk to waste my hard-earned money to buy the DVD. The singer is absolutely and utterly terrible, and the playing totally flat and boring, without any spark of creativity or inspiration. Just rolling the same chords over and over, even Shorter's solo is devoid of that improvisational fire that he is so admired for. I'll take Bob Marley's version any time over this mush. Yuck!

2 out of 5 stars WARNING ! Jazzer's keep dough in pockets........2007-06-23

This is a pop extravaganza. The like of which Carlos is only recently known for. (Remember George Benson?) The jazz musicians on the title play for very very little time in any kind of jazz/improv format. The vast majority of the DVD is singers singing non-jazz songs which are backed up by some of the Jazz musicians. There is one jam towards the beginning where they all get about 8 bars. Then later John and Carlos play "Enter the house of the lord" ALL and I said "ALL" of the rest (even jazz titles) are pop type songs. On the other hand if you havn't had enough of "The Banana Boat Song" then this DVD is for you. As for me. My money is gone.

But do get the Santana and Shorter DVD. That is great. That cooks.

5 out of 5 stars A real great concert.......2007-06-09

I must say that to watch all this great talent on the same stage is a treat. The likes of Chick Corea,Wayne Shorter,Herbie Hancock along with all the singers is a concert not to be missed.

4 out of 5 stars Santana: Hymns For Peace - Live at Montreux 2004.......2007-06-02

People who liked the collaboration between JohnMcLaughlin and Carlos Santana-e.g. "Love, Devotion, Surrender"
will have a chance to see both of the reunited many years later - and even performing compositions from that album. "Let Us Go Into The House Of The Lord" and "A Love Supreme" really stand out! The addition of Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea and Herbie Hancock from the "electric" Miles Davis era is an extra treat!

5 out of 5 stars truly amazing concert.......2007-05-14

It was great to see all these musicians and vocalists together on one stage. The concert was worth the price of the dvd.

Now, if Carlos can just get his former members of Santana and play those great instrumental hits from his earlier albums..........that would be a Santana fan's dream.

5 out of 5 stars Can't Stop Smiling.......2007-06-17

I just received my copy two days ago. Fans reading this review know that most people you tell about Rory have never heard of him. When I play his music for them especially live, the responses are "Wow!" "Where did you hear about him?" "Unbelievable" "You actually saw this guy in concert?" Now they can too. Over 4 and a half hours for about the price of a CD (bought when it was offered for $17.49).
.

Rory was the most charming, exciting, enthusiastic, and entertaining musician I ever saw perform. Read other reviews for a breakdown of his individual performances however taken as a whole, this concert DVD is by far the best I have experienced.

5 out of 5 stars Stand Up Guitar done Right.......2007-05-30

Been a Gallagher fan for 35 years and the only time I had seen him was on the old "In Concert" TV series. After seeing the discs (there are two) I am blown away all over again. There is something about seeing a man and his instrument doing what they were meant to do. And as for anyone complaining about his vocals, I think he did agreat job-sincerity trumps styling everytime. For several hours of rock and blues done by a master, one can't go wrong here. The music may seem dated to younger ears but if you are looking for a taste of real rock like you remember, this is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Worth waiting for.......2007-04-09

I am sorry to say I never got the chance to see Rory before his untimely death. Well now you can see him at 3 different stages of his career. It would have been nice if they could have captured the bands high energy level in the studio but they never did. Live is where Rory and his bandmates excelled. This DVD is great and if you like Rory's music buy this ASAP. If you like blues driven rock you will not be disapointed. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Danno.......2007-04-04

I am a big Rory Gallagher fan and have almost all his work on vinyl records and cd. This is a great collection. You get to see Rory through the years as he ages and makes equipment and band changes. Throughout the whole period, he is exceptional. His early performance with Gerry McAvoy, Lou Martin and Rod de'Ath are my favorites, but all are are worth the price of admission and all have great video and sound quality

5 out of 5 stars I'm shocked that I never knew Rory was so good.......2007-03-18

Thanks to all of you who gave such excellent reviews and information regarding this extraordinary DVD. Your reviews inspired me to buy this DVD (now my favorite out of many, many great concert videos). While I have been aware of Rory Gallagher since the early seventies, I never managed to include his records in my collection. What a huge oversight on my part. After watching his performances on this DVD I am dumbfounded at how I could have grown up in the seventies and not been a huge Rory fan. This DVD is without any doubt a must have for any fan of the blues/rock genre. I'm a middle-aged guy and have never been a groupie, but this DVD captured my interest so intensely that I have subsequently gone on line to find out about Mr. Gallagher's life and work. What I have found is that by all accounts he was a fantastically nice human being respected by his peers for his musical genius and uncompromising style. I agree with what U2's Bono says about Rory; that he was and still is one of the top ten guitarists of all time. What a great DVD. If you don't love this one, you just don't get it.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Moore is one very soulful blues/rock guitarist.......2007-05-14

Gary's performance is not perfect for this show but it is very good. There is a song or two here where he seems a bit tired and doesn't quite move me like his studio recordings do. But remember the main show here includes 16 songs. On most of the show he plays like a man inspired. Standouts to me are "The Messiah Will Come Again", "Parisienne Walkways" (from the bonus set) and "The Stumble". Albert Collins plays on at least 3 songs here and is an entertaining part of the performance. He and Gary provide some interesting interplay on thier instruments, particularly on "Further On Up The Road" where they appear to be argueing with each other using thier guitars at one point. In case you didn't notice in the track listing, this is a generous package with 19 tracks included. I'm very happy to have this one in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars A great DVD! Well worth owning.......2007-05-07

This has been a favorite DVD of mine for the past several weeks. It captures some of my favorite songs that Gary Moore has done during his "blue" phase. The video footage is great for guitarist and Gary's guitar face on some of the solos are alone worth the cost of the DVD!

5 out of 5 stars Guitarist extraodinaire.......2007-03-09

Although this was recorded 17 years ago, forgetting that, this DVD shows the power and amazing abilities of the great guitarist Gary Moore. While I am more into his blues stuff, his rock is just as great. His talent is a given and while he obviously is not a young man, even then let alone now, this DVD is worth the price if you are into Gary Moore, the blues, rock or just guitars or if you are a musician.

5 out of 5 stars Gary Moore is one of the Best blues guitar players!!!.......2007-02-16

Everything that I buy with Gary Moore's name on it is very enjoyable!!! He is so talented and you can really see his love for the Blues when you watch him play his guitar!!!This Dvd really shows the soul of Gary Moore!! I high recommend this Dvd and check out all his other Dvd's and Cd's by him!!!

4 out of 5 stars Wow! Yes, he can play guitar live too!.......2007-01-11

Moore has been on the Rock Blues trail for sometime now. This is earlier in the trip. Nice to see him live, I never have. He can play. He takes alot of the available space here, but he has since developed a little more dynamics and lets the music breathe alot more now. Anyway, it is a fun time for fans to enjoy, it does not disappoint, thats for sure!

For those who wonder what Weather Report, arguably the premier jazz-fusion band of the '70s and '80s, might have sounded like with a guitar player, Carlos Santana & Wayne Shorter - Live at Montreux is a good reference point. The verdict: if Shorter's involved, it's going to be good. The saxophonist-composer and his Weather Report co-founder, keyboardist Joe Zawinul, had disbanded the group by mutual consent about two years before Shorter joined forces with guitarist Santana on a 1988 tour that included this gig at Switzerland's Montreux Jazz Festival. And while Santana was the bigger name, the music presented in this two-hour concert is actually closer to the Weather Report sound--i.e., a rich blend of electric jazz and world music influences performed by a versatile group of virtuoso players. In fact, three of them had been Weather Report members at various times: bassist Alphonso Johnson, the amazing drummer Leon "Ndugu" Chancler, and Chester Thompson, who plays keyboards here but had manned the drum seat while with Shorter, Zawinul, and company. Along with keyboardist Patrice Rushen and percussionists Armando Peraza (congas) and Jose Chepito Areas (timbales), both Santana stalwarts, they assay material familiar to both Shorter fans ("Elegant People" from Weather Report's Black Market, "Sanctuary" from Bitches Brew, one of the many Miles Davis albums on which Shorter played) and Santana lovers ("Incident at Neshabur," "Blues for Salvador," "Europa"). Shorter is brilliant throughout; his solos on both tenor and soprano sax are fiery and expressive, and his communication with the others is a wondrous thing to behold. Santana, on the other hand, often sounds out of his element, if not out of his league; although he has an instantly recognizable sound and plays with great passion, he's primarily a rock guitarist with a limited blues-based style that restricts his ability to interact with skilled improvisers like Shorter and Rushen and take part in the kind of dynamic ebb and flow that characterizes great jazz performances. In the end, this is a good, sometimes inspiring show. But one wonders what might have happened if Shorter had joined forces with, say, John McLaughlin instead. --Sam Graham

Description

It began almost as a lark when Carlos Santana encountered his longtime friend and hero Wayne Shorter on the concert trail in Atlanta, GA, in 1987. Carlos said, "Let's start a rumor that we're putting a band together." Wayne's eyes got bigger and brighter as he smiled and then responded: "Yeah, Carlos, let's start a rumor." A few months later the Carlos Santana/Wayne Shorter Band performed its debut concert at The Fillmore in San Francisco, the beginning of a 26-concert tour throughout the U.S. and Europe. The performance of this magnificent band was recorded at Montreux, Switzerland, on July 14, 1988, and includes interviews with Carlos Santana, Wayne Shorter and festival creator Claude Nobs. SONGS: Spiritual - Peraza - Shhh - Incident at Neshabur - Elegant People - Goodness & Mercy - Sanctuary - For Those Who Chant - Blues for Salvador - FIreball 2000 - Ballroom in the Sky - Once It's Gotcha - Mandela - Deeper, Dig Deeper - Europa Musicians: Carlos Santana - guitar / Wayne Shorter - saxophone / Chester Thompson - keyboards / Patrice Rushen - keyboards / Alphonso Johnson - bass / Armando Peraza - congas / Jose Chepito Areas - timbales / Leon "Ndugu" Chancler - drums

5 out of 5 stars Better than I expected!!!.......2007-07-07

Having seen most of the Santana concert DVDs and also having seen him this last Summer at the Verizon Amphitheater in Irvine, I was pleasantly surprised by this DVD. Carlos seems to have gone more in the pop vein in recent years and his current fan base seems to support this, but this concert on this DVD is magnificent and heavily influenced by the genius that is Wayne Shorter! Carlos surrounds himself with some of the finest musicians available and it shows in the sensitivity of interaction among the soloists and the musicians providing the musical ride. This is the 1st time I had at hearing/seeing both Patrice Rushen, Alphonso Johnson and Leon "Ndgugu" Chancler play live and they are such integral reasons why I love this DVD so much. Chester Thompson is like the left hand to Carlos' right, so there's the complete interplay almost of one mind with those two. One can see and feel the influence Wayne Shorter had on EVERYONE in the band simply because one can see each musician intensely LISTENING as well as interacting with each other!!! I love this DVD so much I am going to buy extra copies and give them to the other members in my band so they too can experience what a concert has the capabilities of being in terms of musicality and creativity. I highly recommend this DVD to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-07-04

Excellent! I love this mix of musicians and music ,I've allways been a Santana fan and to me this is a timeless piece of art.
Thank you Carlitos God bless you

3 out of 5 stars Great Concert, Terrible Cinematography.......2007-04-24

For those of us who enjoy jazz rock music, the pairing of Carlos Santana and Wayne Shorter is a match made in heaven. For anyone who is even vaguely familiar with these two artists, then it should be quite obvious that a live concert featuring them would be great and this concert certainly is.

My criticism is twofold: First, the menu options on the DVD are limited at best. The only selections are: Play All, Interviews, Concert, and Audio Set Up. This DVD was released way after the practice of listing the song selections was the norm. Second, the director falls into the all too common pattern of keeping the shots brief. Most shots do not last longer than four seconds. Every time the shot changes, you have to reorient yourself. This is terrible when you're trying to watch an artist develope a solo. Also, I wish I knew what posses the overuse of the close up. I can almost see its use in movies but for concerts? Please! I really wish directors would realize that when they zoom in that close, they take away the audience's choice. When we attend a live concert, we sit in our seats and look at whatever we want. So, please, please, get the camera out of the performer's freakin' nose and let US decide what we want to look at.

I know that this doesn't bother most people. If you're one of them, then by all means, enjoy this DVD. However, if you feel as I do, you may only want to listen rather than watch.

5 out of 5 stars A few facts..........2007-04-23

It the editorial review above, they state that Chester Thompson plays keys here and played drums with Weather Report. This is incorrect.

The Chester Thompson that played drums with Weater Report also played drums with Genesis.

This Chester Thompson only plays keyboards and did a stint with Tower of Power before joining Santana, I believe he's been well known on the San Francisco scene for decades.

Also, if you like this, try to dig up a copy of Santana's "The Swing of Delight" from around this period...it features Wayne, Herbie Hancock and I believe Johnson is on it too (or perhaps Jaco).

4 out of 5 stars A rare treat.......2007-04-07

What a combination. This is a marvellous treat for both rock and jazz fans with two giants both with their very distinctive sound which melts into a very wonderful treat.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular!.......2007-06-21

This is what happens when you get a collection of some of the world's best jazz musicians, very talented vocalists, and Carlos Santana on one stage together...just a spectacular performance!

Santana and his band are worth the price of admission alone but add Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin(Santana's mentor back in the 70's), Wayne Shorter, Ravi Coltrane plus Stevie Winwood from Traffic fame, and a collection of wonderful female vocalists and you have one of the very best concert DVD's in a long time. The people attending this concert at the Montreux Jazz Festival saw a history making performance.

Add to this, the camera work was excellent and the sound spot-on. The selections of songs were very eclectic, with pices ranging from, John Lennon, Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, Marvin Gaye, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Harry Bellafonte, and of course Santana. Often, when you get too many front-line musicians on the stage together, it can sound like a train wreck but that never happens here. There seems to be a real sense of symbiosis, all the pieces fall together perfectly.

If you want to see Santana perform his more popular songs get, "Supernatural Live" or the "Santana Live By Request" DVD's.

However, if you want to see "real performers" performing at the highest level, playing songs that inspire them, while having a great time, get this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Santana Hymns.......2007-06-01

I have been waiting for this album since I read about Carlo's plans to release it shortly after "Supernatural" had hit it big.It has been years and worth every second of the wait.Santana brings his core new band and adds stellar players to the lineup recording songs that are meant to inspire the people of the world to change their reality to one of compassion for the one world.Carlo's shows he can outplay anyone, anytime, anywhere but he is so humble and concerned for the cause he complaments all of the other players.Imagine Carlos,Mahavishnu,Shorter,Coltrane,Corea,Hancock,Winwood and a host of other luminaries playing songs of love completly in the zone.Carlos and Herbie Hancock are particularly outstanding.I consider this double DVD set the finest music video that has yet been created.Mandatory purchase for everybody in the world.

Synopsis

Chick Corea is one of the most significant jazzmen of recent times. He first came to notice as a keyboard player for Miles Davis in the late sixties and early seventies before founding his own jazz-fusion band Return To Forever with Stanley Clarke, which started the career of Al Di Meola. In more recent times he has been operating as either the Chick Corea Akoustic Band or, as in this case, the Chick Corea Elektric Band.

The band line-up features Corea on keyboards, John Patitucci on bass, Frank Gambale on guitar, Dave Weckl on drums and Eddie Marienthal on sax.

Chick Corea has played Montreux on many occasions both in his own right and as a sideman for other performers. This two and a half hour concert from 2004 was part of the tour for the most recent Elektric Band album To The Stars and the first part of the concert is made up of a number of tracks from that album. After the interlude, the band come back to offer a selection of classic tracks including Eternal Child, Spain and Blue Miles.

4 out of 5 stars Chick Corea Elektric Band: Live at Montreux 2004.......2007-05-06

Good DVD. Nice overall sound.
The crew is leaving no notes unplayed.
If you're in the mood for a chop-fest,
this might interest you.
If you're looking for some background
smoochie music - pass on this one.
A players DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Chick Corea revisited.......2007-05-05

Superb. It's nice to see the Elektrik Band with all the original musicians together, after a long time, and I have to say that time blended them wonderfully. The sound is just OK, but the camera really doesn't show exactly what I'd desire to see. Although there were some negative comments about sound image synchronization I have to say the it's just perfect. Chick keeps piloting the Rhodes and the piano like few in the world would do (that traditional audience participation was really boring, although), Gambale keeps his amazing guitar playing technis, allied with great charisma (if you haven't seen him for a long time, be prepared for a chock), Patitutti and Weckel do shine on stage but Rosenthal passed far from the "G" point, I don't know exactly why. Although I had'nt listened to most compositions I loved them all. In a word, worth every penny you spend.

5 out of 5 stars the best.......2007-02-20

Man, this DVD is so good. The band is awesome. That's no comment for Chick Corea...

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2007-01-10

With all the varied genres of music available today, accompanied by the differing degrees of musicianship, it is a rare treat to find so many outstanding players together on one live DVD. Each one of these players are monsters in their field, with each individual boasting an impressive personal discography. It was awesome to see the Elektric Band back together again, doing what they do best! Playing challenging arrangements, with difficult sections, with lots of freedom to express themselves individually. Some great new contemporary pieces added together with their earlier stuff made for an engaging performance. The rhythmically intricate precise, and truly inspired drumming of David Weckl completed the band. Sorry to say guy's, without Dave Weckl the Elektric band would loose their superb foundation. It is also interesting to see how each player has matured over the 10 year break. Even though many of them have co-produced and appeared on one another's solo projects this particular incarnation of players has not been together for a decade or so. Its a true saying that some things just get better with age, in the case of the Elektric Band that is something truly amazing!

3 out of 5 stars some great moments . . . but.......2006-12-01

I really really wanted to like this one. Always been a fan, but this dvd has finally made me realize what I don't like. The sound is horrible - nothing but sax and keys most of the time (sorry, but Marienthal is closer to smooth jazz than I care to be). If you strain to listen, you can make out some snare drum and cymbal crashes that let you know Weckl's probably doing something amazing. Terrible camera work.

Don't get me wrong, there are some stellar moments. Patittuci is great, every once in a while Gambale gets to shine, and Chick gets some cool spots. The whole effort, as one reviewer pointed out, doesn't really ooze FEEL. As great as the players are, I'm not getting much passion. Somebody please tell Chick not to do anymore "audience participation" cheeseball antics (it went on forever). I bought the Gonzalo Rubalcaba Trio on the same order - it has all the ingredients this one lacks!
