Wearing the mantle of his late father, Bob Marley, with dignity and good humor, Ziggy Marley is in fine form throughout this 105-minute concert filmed in 2001 in Pompano Beach, Florida. A performer who neither avoids nor capitalizes on the obvious comparisons with his legendary dad, Ziggy both looks and sounds like Bob, as does his brother Stephen, who takes several lead vocals (there are also two Marleys among the female backup singers, although their relationships to Ziggy are unclear). His music also draws on many of the same themes: song titles like "Justice," "Africa Unite," and "One Good Spliff" are self- explanatory. But there's only one Bob Marley song, "Jammin'," and while the lilting reggae beat is predominant, the Melody Makers also incorporate some contemporary rock and R&B elements. Not that the audience is much concerned with such details; they're there to party, and the musicians are happy to oblige. --Sam Graham

When a shark accidentally clobbers himself, a small fish named Oscar (voiced by Will Smith, I, Robot) just happens to be around, prompting everyone to believe that he killed the shark himself. This lie soon makes Oscar a celebrity, worshipped by the general mass of fish, wooed by a glittering golddigger (Angelina Jolie, Girl, Interrupted), missed by his best friend (Renee Zellweger, Cold Mountain)--and hunted by the godfather of great whites (Robert De Niro, Goodfellas). Can a vegetarian shark named Lenny (Jack Black, School of Rock) get Oscar out of this mess? The formulaic story of Shark Tale never reaches the giddy heights of Pixar's output (Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc., Toy Story) or the freewheeling comedy of Shrek, but it's capably told and impeccably animated--the sheer technical skill is stunning. Kids won't get the mobster jokes or the other pop-culture references, but they'll enjoy it nonetheless. --Bret Fetzer

Description

A comic catch from the studio that brought you Shrek, Shark Tale is a hilarious hit and "a wonderful under-the-sea adventure for movie lovers of all ages!" (Clay Smith, Access Hollywood)

Oscar (Will Smith), a lowly tongue-scrubber at the local Whale Wash, becomes an improbable hero when he tells a great white lie. To keep his secret, Oscar teams up with an outcast vegetarian shark, Lenny (Jack Black), and the two become the most unlikely of friends. When his lie begins to unravel, it's up to Oscar's loyal friend Angie (Renée Zellweger) and Lenny to help him stand up to the most feared shark in the water (Robert De Niro) and find his true place in the reef.

5 out of 5 stars Great Kids Movie.......2007-07-02

Great kids movie teaches a lesson on streching the truth. Really cute plot the movie.

4 out of 5 stars A Breath of Fresh Air -- underwater!.......2007-07-01

I can't figure out why people comparing this to "Finding Nemo." They are not alike, and comparisons really are pointless. In fact, Shark Tale is stylistically distinct from most other animated films of recent years. It also has its own brand of humor, which is funny in ways quite unlike the typical Pixar/Disney offering we've gotten used to.

Shark Tale is informed by urban culture, which is why *this* reef is traversed by buses (whales) and police cars (orcas), and has a giant screen TV above it all, featuring live news feeds, commercials, and so on. It's much, much closer to the "real" world of humans than one is used to seeing.

In Finding Nemo, one can't recognize the face of Albert Brooks in Marlin the cartoon fish. But in this movie, Oscar is physically reminiscent of Will Smith, Don Leno really reminds one of Robert DeNiro, and Sikes is, somehow, a dead ringer for Martin Scorsese.

In my view, this adds to the humor and the fun. Don Leno is written as a broad cariacature of Mafia dons, and DeNiro has of course played the ultimate human version -- Don Corleone, in the Godfather trilogy. There are other movie in-jokes all over the place.

A gang of shrimp, formerly destined for Don Leno's dinner, escape -- and when they later find a chance to attack Don Leno, the head shrimp says "Say hello to my little friends" -- a line from Al Pacino's famous turn in Scarface, made hilarious by the oddball new setting.

When Oscar defeats Lenny in a staged fight, and poses for the news cameras to publicize his new role as the Sharkslayer, he recites other movie lines that are inane, even surrealistic in this context, like "You can't handle the truth" (Jack Nicholson's line from A Few Good Men), and then "You had me at hello" (Renée Zellweger's line from Jerry Maguire).

The latter line demonstrates just how shallow Oscar is (he can't even come up with original words to boast with), while showing how mindless and uncritical the crowds are (they cheer the line despite its nonsensicality). Meanwhile, it's an inside joke for movie viewers who note that Ms. Zellweger is in this film, too, playing Oscar's "true" love interest, Angie.

Sikes' henchmen are two jellyfish, and the filmmakers depicted them as Jamaican rasta men, with tentacles in lieu of long dreadlocks. They then typecast reggae stars Ziggy Marley and Doug E. Doug in the roles. They're perfect as the character voices, while also providing great music for the soundtrack.

The film's distinctive style may cause one to overlook the skill that must have been required to depict all these characters as fish, with more-or-less realistic swimming motions, who nevertheless manage goofy slapstick right out of vaudeville. If you pay attention you notice Don Leno's consigliere, Luca, pouring a cup of tea -- which, of course, flows out of the cup and into the surrounding water before Luca can drink it. I mean, this kind of stuff is silly, but (in my view) is funny mostly because nobody in the film calls attention to it.

So: great voicework, a fun story, romance plus suspense, lots of sight gags and other humor, fine animation and a great soundtrack.

The ONLY reason I held back from five full stars is because it really isn't appropriate for the very young -- like, under six or seven at least (in my view). I find it frustrating at how hard it is to find a good animated film that doesn't have a lot of violence or adult themes. There is a fair amount of fighting and other types of conflict, which some kids might be used to -- but in any case, now you know.

Bottom line, it's a fun film that stands up to repeat viewing, and if the parents approve it for their kids, it's perfect for whole-family movie nights. Hint: get ready to dance when the music rolls over the end credits!

2 out of 5 stars Shark Tale.......2007-05-23

Oscar is a fish who works in a "whale wash", like his Dad did. He wants to be a somebody, but without much money there's not much chance of that. In fact, he's in a bit of debt with the owner of the whale wash, and he ends up being tied up underwater, left to the sharks. When a shark looking to feed on him accidentally is killed by an anchor, Oscar takes the credit as a "shark slayer". Maybe he'll be a somebody then...

"Shark Tale" is pretty smoothly animated, but the plot isn't quite that engaging. Two and a half stars.

5 out of 5 stars Why are people comparing this to Finding Nemo?.......2007-04-24

This movie is great. It's very funny and gives a good message. Like Dreamworks other movie, 'Madagascar,' it becomes too mature for its target audience, therefore this is not really a film for small children. In fact, adults and teenagers will like this one the most. I think Will Smith is very funny as Oscar - his expressions were priceless!

Now why do people think this is some kind of rip off of Finding Nemo. Lets take a look at the similarities and differences:

Similarities:

*They both had vegetarian sharks.

*They both take place under the ocean.

Differences:

*Finding Nemo is more realistic and takes place on a reef with natural colours. Shark Tale tries a more artistic approach, making it more like a city with shops and apartments. The characters use phones, order pizzas etc.

*There are no humans in ST (apart from an anchor). Whilst with FN, humans were a main part of the story.

*ST is slightly more aimed at older children, teenagers and adults.

*The plots are totally different.

Comparing these two is like comparing apples and oranges. To be honest, I prefer Shark Tale over Finding Nemo. That's just my opinion. I think it is unfair to give Shark Tale a bad review just because it is something it was never intended to be.

5 out of 5 stars All time favorite!.......2007-02-21

If you like reggae, or Ziggy Marley, or just plain good soulful music, this DVD concert is a must.

5 out of 5 stars This DVD is Really Great!.......2003-03-09

OK, first of all let me say that I am a fan of reggae music and of the Marley family. Regardless of that fact, the DVD is top notch. The concert is really excellent in all respects - including sound. I read some things about this DVD before I bought it and watched it. Let me say that what I read earlier was completely wrong. The entire thing was totally worth the money I spent. I am so impressed by the showman ship and quality of the performance, that I am going to look into getting a CD of the live concert. The Melody Makers (including Ziggy) are definitely carrying on the work of their father. The music is supreme. When you watch the concert, you will find yourself getting the higher vibration they so clearly express during the concert's dialogue. Each note and riff comes across clearly and everything just comes together spectacularly. If you are on the fence about getting it, understand that I too was in that place. There is no need to be hesitant in your decision making. If you enjoy the pleasure and pleasant experience of great reggae, you will definitely not be disappointed. In fact, I am looking at it again at this very same moment. Enjoy, because I am.

5 out of 5 stars LIKE FATHER LIKE SON........2002-12-31

This DVD of Ziggy marley & The melody makers is SUPER GREAT.
I mean these guys are fenomenal. I wish that they wil carry on making such live concerts dvd's as this one.

when you clossed your eyes and listing to these two guys (Ziggy and Steven)singing its just like hearing the legend of legends sing (THE HONORBLE MR.ROBERT NESTA MARLEY)

PS. forgive me for my bad english.

4 out of 5 stars Track listing has more than ONE Bob Marley/Wailers song........2002-11-28

There are at least two errors in the main review.
First, on this DVD, Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers perform five Bob Marley and the Wailers songs, not ONE, as stated in the review.
ZM&MM perform "Rainbow Country," "Small Axe," "Africa Unite," "Jammin'" and "Could You Be Loved" -- all Bob Marley and the Wailers songs. (Funny that the review mentions "Africa Unite" and acts as if it's a Ziggy Marley song. Anyone who knows the Wailers and knows ZM&MM, can easily tell the difference in quality between the two groups.)
And furthermore, the main review is comical in that its reviewer doesn't seem to know the relationship of Sharon and Cedella Marley to Ziggy. They're his sisters. Sharon was born to Rita Marley and a man (not Bob Marley) -- Bob adopted her when he married Rita. And Cedella is Bob's and Rita's firstborn child.
Their relationship to Ziggy isn't CLEAR? No, it's actually rather quite clear to any one who is a fan of the group. They're siblings.

The performances here are better than that on the "One Love Tribute Concert" DVD. On that DVD, the performances, even ZM&MM's seemed forced.
Try this DVD as well as "Live at the Palladium" and "Marley Magic" -- although, "Marley Magic" is only worth buying for ZM&MM's performances, not those of Rita Marley, Julian and Damian and Yvad. Just push the skip button to the ZM&MM set.

1 out of 5 stars Does not live up to typical DTS audio sound!.......2001-08-29

Do not let the "DTS" emblem fool you. I have heard Dolby Digital 2.0 concerts with better sound sound! The audio on this DVD is autrosious! The video is good, and it seems to be a good concert, but the audo is just plain bad!

3 out of 5 stars OK, a small nugget for those who saw it back in the late 80s.......2002-10-01

This concert is OK at best. I still remember watching it on cable back in the late '80s (1988?). Bunny Wailer and Jimmy Cliff turn in the best performances. I still vividly remember Bunny Wailer singing "Rise and Shine" and Jimmy Cliff singing "Hanging Fire." Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers, if I recall correctly, only perform one song and Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders turns in an OK performance (although much better than the ragged turn she gives on the "One Love -- All Star Tribute to Bob Marley" DVD.
So, bottomline, if you saw this concert back in the '80s and still remember it, then it's worth buying. But if you haven't seen it, then you're not missing much. If it they had split the stage time between Ziggy Marley, Jimmy Cliff and Bunny Wailer, this would be a worthy purchase.
Try buying "Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers Live at the Palladium" and "Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers Live" instead. Also, take a chance with Peter Tosh's "Captured Live." (these are all on DVD).

Marley Magic, a concert recorded in Central Park at SummerStage on a July day in 1996, saw the coming together of Bob Marley's musical family to play and pay tribute to reggae's greatest icon, who died in 1981. The youngest Marley offspring, Damien "Jr. Gong" and Julian, kick off events here, with sweet but sturdy pop-reggae. Yvad's softer acoustic ballads are a little insipid by comparison, but Marley's wife Rita--now a grand, straw-hatted matriarch on the reggae scene--picks things up with "Good Girls Culture" and a cover of Marley's "No Woman, No Cry." Inevitably, it's Ziggy Marley & the Melody Makers who headline and offer the strongest reminder of the Master's own stage presence, backed, à la Bob, by three female vocalists and a rhythm section. So inspired is one member of the audience by Ziggy's rendition of "Stir It Up" that he lifts a cigarette lighter, a gesture that loses something on a blazing summer's afternoon. But relax, who cares? --David Stubbs

Description

Songs: Natty Dread, Positive Vibration, Stir it Up, Get Up Stand Up, Water and Oil, Sun is Shining, Free Like We Want to Be, Could You Be Loved (Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers), So Much To Say, Good Girls Culture, That's the Way, Harambe, To Love Somebody, Guava Jelly/No Woman No Cry, Jammin', Lively Up Yourself (Rita Marley), Lion in the Morning, Same Old Story, Exodus (Julian Marley), Me Name Jr. Gong, Crazy Baldheads, Love and Unity (Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley), We Need Love, Freedom (Yvad).

5 out of 5 stars I thought it was awesome.......2004-06-22

All this negativity, I thought it was great and appreciate all the performances that were given. I don't think it was shameful, I am glad the family is trying to keep bob's memory alive! So I Liked it!

1 out of 5 stars Little "magic" here, and no true Marley........2004-01-01

Only worth purchasing for Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers' performance, which is also far from their best. The rest is lackluster, forced filler by artists with little talent. It might be interesting on paper to see Rita Marley perform, but in actuality, it's all such a ho-hum affair, one wonders if these artists were emotionally into this event at all. As for Julian and Damien, they show why there are still, to this day, the "lesser" Marleys, who seem to be strictly capitalizing on Bob's name. At least Ziggy and the Melody Makers show actual talent. But unfortunately, even their set seems forced, and disappointing when compared to their performances on "Live" and "Live at the Palladium," two DVDS that are better choices to see/buy -- best to leave "Marley Magic" off your list.

3 out of 5 stars NUFF repsect!!! its works 4 me!!!!.......2003-11-30

I read a couple of reviews about this dvd and had to respond. no this is not the greatest concert flim, but its works for me. there is not enough reggae concert flims around, so i won't be that super critcial. Julian and Damian's energy can be felt, and keep in mind they are much better performers now ! this flim is in 1996!! they have grown! its was good to see Ziggy and the Melody Makers, and Rita looked like she was truly having fun. ok the low point was Yvad!!! he should have been the opener. low energy from him and I just didn't feel the songs

2 out of 5 stars A real disapointment.......2003-08-02

Do not buy this DVD if you really love Bob Marley. There is no "magic" in it.
It is a regular video for a regular party that is so boring to watch and without much music to listen.

1 out of 5 stars Bad, very bad.......2002-08-14

Boy this stunk. I am a huge fan of reggae and Bob Marley and thought this was a joke. For the most part, I don't think the Marley family has too much musical talent and this is a big showcase of that. Particularly bad are Stephen's "Rastaman Vibration" and all the songs by Damien and Julian. Yet another attempt by the Marleys to cash in on Bob's name. Shameful.

3 out of 5 stars Back in days of VHS, was the best ZM concert video.......2004-01-01

Back in the late 80s, before DVD, this was the best Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers concert on video you could get. Actually, I think it was the ONLY one you could buy. But nonetheless, it was a good, solid set -- Ziggy, who was about 20 at the time of the concert, shows he was still feeling his way out in terms of his stage presence (caught between being himself and trapped in his father's shadow), but delivers an entertaining, get-you-dancing show, with covers of his 2 of his father's songs, "Rat Race" and most notably the melancholy "Time Will Tell." To those unaware, the latter touches on the murder attempt on Bob's life -- arguably the most moving performance here. Ziggy and family even throw in two pre-"Conscious Party" songs in "Unuh Nuh Listen Yet" and "Lord We a Come," two of the more rousing, fun songs here. While the "Live" DVD that came out in recent years may show more maturity, this one captured a youthful Ziggy just as he had broke into the mainstream after three albums on EMI, and his breakthrough "Conscious Party" on Virgin. Works as a snapshot of its time -- a good place to start for the uninitiated.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money on this one.......2003-07-14

This would have to be the worst collection of flat sounding reggae clips i have ever seen. The audio is so flat and compressed that even if there was something interesting on it, it would not be enjoyable. Complete waste of money.

3 out of 5 stars Must Have for Reggae Collectors.......2002-06-05

This video may be a little boring by today's standards (it's about 10 + yrs old), but the coverage of DENNIS BROWN, LUCIANO, SHAGGY, MAXI PRIEST, YAMI BOLO, AND GARNETT SILK are crucial 'must have' items for any true reggae music collector!

The production & editing are excellent (especially by REGGAE standards....as many reggae videos are poorly produced)

3 out of 5 stars Reggae = yes, Movie = no.......2002-05-02

I enjoyed this film more in the theatre (better sound). As I viewed it again, it's pretty boring. There's no dialog. It's not even a movie really. It's just concert footage. The Mystic Revealers are especially boring. I wish it featured more Luciano, and Garnett Silk...

    Description

A comic catch from the studio that brought you Shrek, Shark Tale is a hilarious hit and "a wonderful under-the-sea adventure for movie lovers of all ages!" (Clay Smith, Access Hollywood) Oscar (Will Smith), a lowly tongue-scrubber at the local Whale Wash, becomes an improbable hero when he tells a great white lie.

5 out of 5 stars WOW DANG ONE OF THE BEST MOVE.......2007-05-08

NOW I COULD EASYLY SAY THIS WILL GO DOWN AS ONE OF THE GRATEST MOVE EVER MADE IN THE WORLD THAT IS SO FOR SHORE

Kids won't get the mobster jokes or the other pop-culture references, but they'll enjoy it nonetheless. --Bret Fetzer

NOW I COULD EASYLY SAY THIS WILL GO DOWN AS ONE OF THE GRATEST MOVE EVER MADE IN THE WORLD THAT IS SO FOR SHORE
