Description
Def Leppard's album Hysteria sold over 17 million copies, produced seven hit singles and brought worldwide superstardom to the band in 1987.

After the success in America of the 1983 album Pyromania, Def Leppard went into 'exile' in Dublin to begin the writing and production of their fourth album. It would be four years in the making. During this time they would try three different record producers, three different recording studios, Producer Robert 'Mutt' Lange would suffer leg injuries in a car accident, drummer Rick Allen would narrowly survive a terrible car crash but lose his left arm in the accident, and the band would be taken to the limits of their physical and emotional endurance.

This program takes a track by track look at the making of the album. We speak to Joe Elliott, Rick Allen, Phil Collen, and Rick Savage who lead us through the original multitrack tapes. Joe and Phil play acoustic versions of 'Pour Some Sugar On Me' and 'Hysteria', and Sav and Phil demonstrate riffs and licks from the songs, and explain the genesis of the songwriting. Rick talks of the impact of the car accident on his life and on the band, of his determination to re-learn the drums, and of his triumphant return to performing live at the 1986 Donnington Festival.

Featured songs include 'Animal', 'Rocket', 'Love Bites', 'Hysteria', 'Women', 'Armageddon It' and 'Pour Some Sugar On Me'. The program is illustrated by archive footage from Def Leppard in concert, TV performances and promotional videos, and provides a unique insight into the making of a record which dominated the charts for two years, a true Classic Album.

What do you do when you're given the deadline for the end of the world? Steve De Jarnatt's insidiously clever and utterly gripping nuclear thriller begins as a romantic lark--amiable swing trombonist Anthony Edwards meets girl of his dreams Mare Winningham--and turns into a nightmarish vision of society out of control. It all turns on the chance pick-up of a ringing pay phone at 4 a.m. and a panicked voice breathlessly warning Edwards that World War III has been launched. Genuine wake-up call or elaborate prank? De Jarnatt plays his hand close to the chest, which only increases the unnerving tension as word spreads like a contagion. Future E.R. star Edwards is perfectly cast as the everyman driven to reckless desperation and director De Jarnatt creates wonders on a small budget. His vision of L.A.'s Miracle Mile gripped in the blind panic of a careening traffic jam is both believable and chilling. --Sean Axmaker

Description

What would you do if you knew you only had an hour to live? This intense, "eerily euphoric" (TheNew York Times) romantic thriller stars Anthony Edwards ("ER") and Mare Winningham (Georgia) in a frighteningly plausible story that "yanks you by the lapels and draws you onto a high-velocity roller coaster" (Houston Post)! After 30 years of searching, Harry (Edwards) has finally met the girl of his dreams. Unfortunately, before they even have a chance to go on their first date, Harry intercepts some chilling news: WWIII has begun and nuclear missiles will destroy Los Angeles in less than an hour! Not sure if this is a prank or an omen, Harry races through LA, fighting angry mobs of terrified people in a desperate search for Julie (Winningham), the one person with whom he wants to spend the last moments of his life.

4 out of 5 stars Taut, suspenseful movie.......2007-07-04

I just watched this again for the first time since it came out and it still gripped me.

The first 30 minutes make you think you're watching a love story. Then, through a series of unfortunate and unforeseen events, the protagonist misses his date and ends up in front of a payphone at 4:00 AM trying to get in touch with his date when the phone suddenly rings. He answers it...

... and all Hell breaks loose. This movie will keep your gut clemched and you're mind racing, trying to guess whether it's for real or just a horrible misunderstanding right up to the last minute of the film.

Was it a joke phone call or the real thing?
Is Landa insane or is she for real?

I removed one star because of the ending. The film steamrolls from the answered call forward and then slams you into the brickwall of an ending rather than go around it. Some people like that type of ending. Done right, I do too. Not this one.

Still, one very frightening movie. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Is that all there is?.......2007-06-13

What plays for the most part like a sufficiently zany second fiddle to Scorsese's "After Hours" also ends in the most unsatisfying way I've had the misfortune to sit through. This is supposed to be a love story at heart -- else our bespectacled hero Harry Washello, played by Anthony Edwards, closer to "Revenge of the Nerds" than "E.R.," would not kiss asphalt at 40 mph to rescue love interest Julie "I-lost-the-fight-with-my-lawnmower" Peters, played by Mare Winningham, as nuclear winter looms on the horizon. Yet when all is said and done, this is a defeatist romance at best. It's as if there were two scriptwriters butting heads on the set, one attempting something like a precursor to "Four-Eyed Monsters;" the other trying to make a statement about the threat of nuclear war and other meathead qualities of our modern-day Gomorrah. And the moral lesson trumps anything Cupid can cook up, leaving the doomed couple staring at one another uncomfortably in the film's rather unmiraculous final moments.

Still, the film merits three stars because Edwards really takes to portraying the 30-something, trombone-playing loner who as the movie starts finally meets the woman of his dreams, then becomes the recipient of a wrongly-dialed doomsday message. The supporting cast is up to the task as mayhem builds -- particularly Kurt Fuller in a gonzo scenestealer as the go-to guy when you need a helicopter in a jiffy. And somebody was definitely having fun crafting scenes like the witching-hour health club, in which our Armageddon-whistleblowing everyman Harry comes off as less stable than the coke-crazed, vaseline-slathered fitness freaks who populate the club. But then, sadly, "Mile" fumbles at the 1-yard line.

4 out of 5 stars Quirky but enjoyable film.......2007-05-31

Anthony Edwards (ER)plays a musician and romantic who finds the love of his life on the same day that he finds out the world is coming to an end. That is the basic premise of this quirky and eccentric film. At the same time he arrives late for his date with his dreamgirl he intercepts a phone call from someone telling him that the world will end in 1 hour. He then shares this strange and prophetic message with the oddball night characters at an all night diner. Everything gets crazy as he then decides to take the extra time to save his new love.

This enjoyable movie was made in the late 1980s when the anxiety and worry about a possible superpower nuclear showdown, USA vs USSR, was still real and palpable. There are some interesting performances here. Denise Crosby (Star Trek Next Generation) character takes this information right to heart and pulls out all the stops to get out of town fast. Myleti T. Williamson (Heat, Forrest Gump) plays a petty criminal who gets caught up in the hysteria by accident. They are other fine performances by actors you will immediately recognize. And it's fun to take notice of the things that seemed to change right after this movie was made. By the early 90s the threat of the USSR- gone. Soon after that pay phones began to disappear. People walking around restaurants and other public places with a cigarette in tow- gone (thankfully). Brick sized mobile phones- gone.

Filmed in LA and mostly at night this low budget movie is suitably accompanied by the music of Tangerine Dream. This surreal movie stays interesting and fun from beginning to end.

5 out of 5 stars The one real GREAT DVD that I ever had to give away.................2006-12-15

Yes that right! This is a very powerfully sad and engaging movie. Even after the first time I saw it on HBO in early 90's, this movie completely fails to lose its punch and depravity. All I can say is that after I viewed this with my wife, (we viewed it, casually enjoying the setup process), and when the heat got turned up, we didn't say another word till the very very end. From the not quite over the top, but truly believable acting of Anthony Edwards to the quiet feminity and perky persona of Mare Whittingham's character all the way to the very end with the musical score of Tangerine Dream. This movie will haunt you for all the wrong reasons. It now belongs to someone else.

Director Tobe Hooper was a hot property after he scored a popular hit with Poltergeist (thanks in part to producer Steven Spielberg), so his follow-up film was the most wildly ambitious of his career to date. Armed with a big budget and a special effects crew led by Star Wars pioneer John Dykstra, Hooper and Alien cowriter Dan O'Bannon whipped up a movie that must be seen to be believed. That's not really a compliment, since Lifeforce isn't much of a movie when all the sound and fury is over. But you've got to admit there's something crazily admirable about a movie that starts out as a science fiction adventure about a mission to explore Halley's comet, turns into an alien-invasion thriller featuring a beautiful naked woman (Mathilda May) who's a vampire from space, and escalates into an end-of-the-world disaster flick! It's got everything you could want from a horror movie--from zombies running amok in London to rotting corpses and energy bolts to signal the apocalypse to come! Holding it all together is Steve Railsback as the Halley mission survivor who holds the key to mankind's salvation--but what fun is saving the world when you could be seduced by a sexy naked space vampire? Check out Lifeforce to see how it all turns out. The widescreen DVD includes 15 minutes of footage not seen in U.S. theaters, an eight-page booklet of production notes and trivia, and the original theatrical trailer. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Vampires from the space!.......2007-05-11

A different kind of vampires, with an excellent music score, by the late five Oscar Winner Henry Mancini

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie, Crummy DVD.......2007-04-20

Lifeforce is maybe not a great film, but it's a great bit of SF/horror storytelling. Written by the great Dan O'Bannon, it's a fascinating, creepy, engrossing SF take on the vampire mythos. Well-acted, well directed, with just enough logic to keep you hooked, and just enough of a mythic quality to leave you satisfied... this film is a hoot from end to end. It's been compared to the good ol' British Quatermass series, and amply lives up to that noble lineage.

Alas, however, the MGM DVD totally fails to do the film justice. Presented in a low-res letterboxed form, it lacks the detail and the punch that the material deserves. Worth seeing as-is, but long overdue for a "deluxe edition" anamorphic re-release.

5 out of 5 stars Great 1980s scifi movie.......2007-03-14

I really liked this movie. It was a different twist to vampire movies in those years and these years as well. It was very different because of the "alien vampire" aspect of the movie and how they "collected souls". I thought that the movie was suspenseful and had many special effects of the 80s that were very good for that time. The acting was great as well as the plot of the movie. I recommend this movie to anyone that likes vampire movies and are also scifi fans as well.

4 out of 5 stars Vampires in space... well... sorta. .......2007-01-23

Here's a new way of looking at the whole vampire myth. I must say I thought the concept was both unique and fascinating. Lifeforce is a movie that blends different B-movie influences together into one tight package. You will see a little bit of detective stuff, rampaging alien killers, girls walking around naked, and some Night of the Living Dead for added flavor. The thing is I don't see Lifeforce as a B-movie. Somehow the blending of these genres ended up making a product better than the sum of its parts.

Make no bones about it. This is essentially a monster movie with some hints of scariness to it. Though you hardly see any monstrous creatures and it's not nearly as scary as movies like Alien. You will find a little blood and gore in this film, but not too much. I think what sets this movie apart is the way you are led through each scene, learning what's going on as the characters do. It doesn't hurt that they have the beautiful Mathilda May make her on screen debut the way she does.

What really makes this movie cool is that it's a completely unique take on the vampire legend. Instead of undead creatures cursed to drink blood they are aliens who suck a person's life essence dry (hense the name of the movie). Adding Halley's comet to the mix only make it that much more interesting, especially when you take into account that the movie was released just before Halley's Comet was to return.

The special effects are great for the time. They do a good job mixing lighting and other effects in the finished product. I think this is the first movie to use a particular laser photography technique when creating the soul energies you see floating about in the movie. The model work is pretty good too when they show London, England getting trashed. The animatronic ghouls were great. Makeup... well... I suppose there is only so much you can do with dozens of extras and trying to make them all look as good as the mechanical ghouls. I can't blame them for that limitation, but I can't help but see the scenes with all the people turning into vampire mutants as just plain cheesy. Oh well. Can't win them all.

The DVD comes with an additional 15 minutes of footage at the beginning that wasn't shown in theaters. The scene essentially chronicles what happened to the astronauts that everybody is trying to figure out throughout the movie. So when you look at it that way the additional footage kind of spoils the mystique of the movie I mentioned before. Still it's an impressive scene. I wished they would have just made it a deleted scene to keep the integrity of the original film, but what are you going to do? Another extra worth noting is the 8 page booklet that gives you a lot of interesting info on the production side of things. Make sure you get that booklet if you are getting this used.

All in all Lifeforce succeeds in executing their story. If you are into the Dracula scene you might be disappointed as this is nothing like it. If youre into unexplained phenomenon or a light supernatural mystery then you might get a kick out of this. If you're just a kinky slimeball who only watches movies for the naked girls then this movie has something for you, but don't limit yourself man! There's more to life, and to this movie, than that.

Any fan of Richard Lester's A Hard Day's Night won't want to miss the documentary The Beatles: The First U.S. Visit by Albert and David Maysles. The Maysles brothers were given extraordinary access to the Beatles during their first trip to the U.S., in February 1964, for several concerts and their seminal first appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show. Like Hard Day's Night, which came out later that year, this film (also known as What's Happening! The Beatles in the U.S.A.) shows lots of spontaneous cheekiness with the press and fans; the Beatles' wide-eyed bemusement at the hysteria they caused; as much cutting up as a tiny hotel room allows; and even specific scenes--goofing off on a commuter train, mod dancing in a nightclub--that would later appear in Lester's film. The only thing missing is Paul's grandfather.

The performance segments alone are a must for fans. The three Ed Sullivan appearances show a great cross section of their hits at the time, including "All My Loving," "I Saw Her Standing There," a beautifully delivered "This Boy" by John Lennon, and a wobbly "I Saw Her Standing There" so out of tune George Harrison nearly cracks up as he listens to Lennon and Paul McCartney struggle for harmony. The blurry, badly mic'd footage of the concert at the Washington Coliseum shows the Beatles acting as their own roadies, setting up their instruments; the platform Ringo Starr drums on lurches ominously with each downbeat. It was a more innocent, exuberant time, to be sure, and this sweet documentary lets the Beatles phenomenon speak for itself. --Anne Hurley

5 out of 5 stars You Need this Dvd !.......2007-05-21

This is the original film documentry by the Maysles brothers, of the Beatles' first American visit. When the boys came to our shores in February 1964, the Maysles were commisioned to follow them around with cameras, detailing their every move during the entire brief tour. The result is now on dvd, fully remastered and really fun fun fun to watch.

A visual diary of Beatlemania unfolding for the first time, in America, the cameras follow them from the minute they descend the steps of the aircraft until they ascend again. In keeping with the cinema verite' style, there is no narration, only diologue, and events captured as they unfold. The camera captures the fan hysteria at the airport, in front of the Plaza Hotel, and of course in the Ed Sullivan studio, during the live taping of their historic appearances. It even eavesdrops on Murray the K as he counts down on his WINS radio show, the minutes to their arrival. But of course, 99% of this film is the Beatles themselves, just being themselves. (Or as natural as you can be if you have a camera in your face all the time.) You see them in the car going to the hotel, in the hotel , in Central Park, at the Peppermint Lounge,... everywhere, including their excursion to Miami Beach.

It's fun to note their excitement as they witness their impact on America, and realize that they are the first British act to actually win the hearts of this big, intimidating country. Their excitement is obvious and unrehearsed, especially Paul's. When I first watched this dvd, I hadn't seen The Beatles for a long time, and I was so overjoyed to see and hear them again. I had forgotten how young they were. I was also surprised that Paul comes across as the most natural, and the one who wears his heart on his sleeve (so to speak) more than the others. He can barely contain his excitement, and happiness in this film, and he doesn't bother trying. I was really surprised by how funny he is. In almost every scene, he is doing a funny accent or impersonation of someone, and he's really good. People seem to associate John with this sort of humor, but Paul was just as funny. John on the other hand, plays the cool man, putting a check on his excitement. In the car going to the hotel, John and Ringo look on with affectionate amusement as Paul, barely able to contain himself, practically bounces out of his seat, waving a transister radio around. George and Ringo are seen doing some slapstick on the train going to Washington D.C. but it isn't as funny as the droll one liners that both of them became known for as time went on. And in this particular film, they are not as fun to watch as dear Paul...and ultra cool John. The extras offered with this treasure of a dvd are also worth it. They contain out takes from the original film which include more clowning around, more McCartney craziness, ( in one scene with Murray the K, and later by the Plaza elevator, Paul almost seems, dare I say it,...high.) They had just left the Peppermint Lounge so who knows? Also of interest, are interviews on the street with snobby music students as they pontificate about the Beatles. If you're over a certain age (or you've seen the movie, Animal House), you know the type. Those early 60's folky type girls, with long hair, very well spoken, intellectual, and talking about how they don't normally listen to pop music, only folk and classical. Yeah yeah yeah. Anyway this is a very important addition to the Beatlephile library and I cherish it for it's historical and entertainment value. You will too.

5 out of 5 stars The Beatles - The First U.S. Visit.......2007-02-10

This was great! We all loved it! If you are a Beatle fan, it is a must.

5 out of 5 stars A Must See For Even The Casual Beatles Fan.......2006-09-18

The Beatles' First U.S. Visit is, behind "The Compleat Beatles" and their self-produced "Anthology", the most entertaining and revealing about this musical group of four doing what they were born to do, on the way to the crest of their musical creativity. The performances on the American "Ed Sullivan Show" are entertaining for fans and interesting as historical documents, but the true gems are the sequences of non-performance documentary footage of all four members of the group, Brian Epstein, and (briefly, hush-hush ;)) Cynthia Lennon. This footage provides a window into The Beatles' emotional state during this life-altering point in their career. They balance organized professionalism (largely achieved by Brian Epstein, often under-appreciated in that he was managing a musical act achieving unprecedented popularity with no precedented business or professional model) with their excitement of their success in America. Then and now, largely the Holy Grail of success in entertainment. Paul, as would seem to be his role in their entire career together, acts as a conduit between George, John, Ringo and their handlers, like encouraging Ringo to pack his suitcase thouroughly in a "mother hen" voice. Watching them listen to themselves on the radio in America, seeing footage of car-mobbing people from the INSIDE of their car, seeing John tease instrumental DJ Murray The K (none the wiser) with pervy English slang, and The "Ed Sullivan" performances themselves is priceless. Though by February 1964 they were well versed in Hotel Room culture, their upbeat moods reveal their happiness (and reported surprise) at their reception from the moment they stepped off the trans-Atlantic airplane. Seeing this week of pivotal events in rock n' roll history from is a wonderful peek behind the Beatles' curtain on par with their "Anthology" and not to be missed by any casual or greater fan. Probably, if purchased, one of the Beatles-related home media films you will find yourself repeat watching more than others. Well shot by the Maysles brothers, directed and edited. Highly recommended.

Although my favourite Beatles' era is their middle period (RS through MMT), followed by their late period (1968 to the end), there's a charm and sweetness to their early years as well, even though their songs were more lightweight and poppish. They also looked so alike in this period, and it's charming to see how naturally they conducted themselves in front of the camera, just four innocent boys who had recently made it big and were having a great time on their first visit to America (although George had already been on his own in 1963 to visit his sister). Nothing was faked or staged, and nothing is boring either. The wit and charm was just so natural. The documentary of outtakes is also very good, and serves to give a fuller picture of what went on during the filming.

However, as others have said, this documentary contains footage of their performances on 'The Ed Sullivan Show' and at the Washington Coliseum, footage which is already available on other DVDs (although since I'm not one to nitpick over minor technical details in lieu of the big picture, I won't go into which has better audio or visual quality). It seems as though they could have put in the unused scene they shot when they went into the nearest apartment to watch the show with a family, instead of putting in footage already available elsewhere. I also found the audio commentary to be rather lacking. There were way too many long pauses and not nearly enough comments or observations. How hard could it have been to fill up the nearly 90 minutes with practically nonstop comments and observations, particularly when we're dealing with The Beatles?

5 out of 5 stars Salem's Trials.......2007-01-07

This DVD is excellent for 11th Grade English Teachers, trying to go over the Salem witch trials can be difficult. If you purchase this DVD it goes step by step on how everything started and students get interested right away. I thought it was well explained and it was smooth transition into the whole Crucible unit.

3 out of 5 stars Ehhh... interesting, but..........2007-01-05

I bought this product to use in my classroom while teaching The Crucible to 11th grade students. It held their attention for about 5 minutes. Some of the information is interesting, but most of it I already knew and/ or found out in my research to teach the book. Bottom line is this: if you like the History Channel, you will like this DVD. If not, look at something else.

4 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to The Salem Witch Hunts of 1692.......2006-02-16

This History Channel documentary is a good introductory history to the infamous witch trials that took place in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. It gives a broad overview of the major events and characters in this tragic episode of fear and suspision in early colonial America.

The Salem Witch saga began in the winter of 1692 with the strange behavior surrounding a number of young girls living in Salem Village, several of whom were living in the household of the controversial village minister Samuel Parris. The girls were given to bizarre fits that the local physician was at a loss to explain except by the actions of witchcraft. Soon accusations were leveled at the minister's Carib Indian slave woman, Tituba, who, under torture, admitted to being a witch in league with the Devil. Before long, hundreds of people from the surrounding countryside were arrested and dragged into court to answer to charges of witchcraft. In the end, 19 people died as a result of the tumultuous trials before public sentiment finally turned against the accusers.

The Salem Witch Trials have loomed large in American history since the time they occurred. There have been many different attempts to explain the causes of the witchcraze that swept Salem, but the debate continues to this very day. This documentary gives a clear and basic understanding of the historical events that took place and serves as a good introduction to this material for anyone interested in this notorious event in American History.

Product Description

The true story of one of the most successful pop-metal bands of the 80s. All born in England, the group first found success at home and then, with the help of producer Mutt Lange, they began to top the US charts. Although problems with drug and alcohol addiction took their toll, it was not until a car accident took the arm of the group's drummer that the party came to a halt. Faced with the potential death of the group and pressure to find a new drummer, the group banded together and encouraged their mate to learn how to play with one arm and re-join Def Leppard. They went on to sell over 14 million albums during their next tour.

5 out of 5 stars Hysteria- The Def Leppard Story.......2007-05-26

Very good movie covering the beginning of Def Leppard's career. Although some of the movie is not completely correct. It still is very informative and doesn't sugar coat anything. It gives you an appreciation of the band and friendship.

5 out of 5 stars Hysteria - The Def Leppard Story.......2007-05-13

I'm glad I now have a historical perspective on one of my most favorite bands of all time. Look forward to seeing them this September.

4 out of 5 stars Great addition to a Def Leppard collection.......2007-05-09

I've been a huge fan of Def Leppard since the early 80's, and their longevity and mutli-faceted talents continue to amaze me 20+ years later. This movie chronicles a relatively short but crucial period in the band's existence, from their founding to the accident that cost drummer Rick Allen his left arm, and his truly incredible determination to re-train himself to use his feet instead. It ends with what I believe was their first public performance with Rick post-accident, at a Monsters of Rock concert - an amazing performance that made music headlines all over the world.

Def Leppard is one of the only bands whose story and music consistently trigger a multitude of different emotions for me. I personally find the whole band and their story to be incredibly inspirational. Obviously there's Rick Allen's story, which would be pretty hard to top. I also think of Joe Elliott as a quintessential frontman, and he seems much more than that. His passion for music and drive to succeed is palpable, and his and the other guys' determination to keep it together through some tough times is something anyone can take a lesson from. I have all of their albums from On Through the Night to Yeah, and there's not a single one with a bad or even forgettable song. My emotions run the gamut when I listen, from the happy-let's-party feeling I get from songs like Photograph and I Wanna Be Your Hero, to mellow-smooth with songs like Too Late for Love, Breathe a Sigh and Truth, to sad with White Lightning, Scar and Blood Runs Cold, to sexy with All Night (REALLY like that one), Slang, and I Wanna Touch You. Their music captures an entire life, with all its twists and turns.

I'd in fact been resisting the whole mp3 player / iPod mania until I realized that I couldn't get all my Def Leppard CD's into one player, so if I ever meet them I'm going to tell them they owe me $150 bucks..... LOL

Anyway, back to the movie.... it ends just before the Hysteria, erm, hysteria, so it's hardly a complete picture of the band's career, but then again, 20+ years would be hard to take down to 2 hours of screen time. The acting is slightly cheesy, but I thought everyone did an admirable job of portraying the band members as faithfully as possible.

Definitely recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Kinda cheesy video footage, but a decent attempt at the history of Def leppard........2007-04-26

It's hard to make a movie about bands, two notable band with bigger movies were the Doors and the beatles, as well as countless other bands having films out their. When I saw this was coming to VH1, I was pumped. it shows the band from start up in Sheffield england to their biggest during the Hysteria tour. It covers this period well, pete willis and his departure, the finding of Phil collins, and the rise of the terror twins. And, of course, how to handle a drummer who looses one essential tool...an arm. My only critisism is the fact it was so short, and didn't go beyond hysteria. I wish it would have covered the loss of Steve to alcohol and the eventual addition of Vivian Campbell. also, the video and stage footage was kinda cheesy, but its still leppard music. If they would have cut out some of the cheesy stage footage and added a few more minutes of movie to cover through the arrival of Vivian, it would have been perfect in my book. But, with only so much time, some things get cut, and this version is good enough. Check it out, entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars I would strongly advise any Def Leppard fan out there to see this movie..........2007-03-21

I am new Def Leppard fan, been one for only a year now, and I can honestly say that I learned a lot about them by watching this movie. I understand where the diehard fans are coming from when they all say that it was too short and didn't include a lot of important details, but come on now, you can only fit so much into 80-90 minute movie. Let's all cross our fingers and hope that one of these days a major studio will create a better/longer version of their story and cast better actors because Def Leppard's story deserves more than what VH1 dished out. Overall, I thought that it was good, and the only reason why I'm giving this a 5 is because I can't help but give VH1 props for trying. I'd strongly recommend this for any and every DL fan.

Overlooked during its theatrical run but a cult favorite on video, this unique and chilling take on the zombie film finally joins the digital ranks with a two-DVD set from Blue Underground. James Farentino stars as a small-town sheriff who discovers that the victims in a string of grisly murders are reappearing seemingly alive and unharmed. His investigation leads him to suspect that the local mortician (Jack Albertson) is somehow responsible for these reanimated corpses; what Farentino doesn't know is the extent to which the entire town-himself included-is involved. Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-05-15

This is a highly underrated horror classic with great special effects and great story from writer of alien Dan O'Bannon. It kind of reminds me of a cross between "The Wicker man" and "The fog" with good gore scenes. If you like horror with a sci-fi feel this is a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars Cult directors hidden favorite.......2007-02-13

Dan O' Bannon who wrote Aliens wrote this. Stan Winston in his early years as special effects make-up artist worked on it. "Se7en" steals from it. "The 6th Sense" owes everything to it. It has a critically acclaimed eye and needle scene. Lots of brutally gory death scenes for its time. You can easily mistake it for a John Carpenter classic. Not the best production values in the world but when something this low budget is generating the twists and thrills 30 years before the modern horror guru pretended that no one would ever see this one again (isn't DVD great?) it can not be underrated. Cult has an impact.

4 out of 5 stars Exhumed at last!.......2007-02-05

Great to see the full uncut version of this cult classic horror available at last! Dead and Buried is very creepy little horror, punctuated with a few inspired make-you-jump and make-you-wince moments. Whilst not perhaps as explicit as horror flicks that melt the gorehounds' butter today, Dead and Buried builds at a measured pace, to a clever and shocking conclusion that is sure to make you want to watch the movie again to check for clues you may have missed.

This two-disk edition spoils the viewer for extras, with commentaries, trailers, stills and biogs galore. The sleeve notes also give a fascinating insight into the problems that beset this film and the tortuous path it took to result in this DVD release. Only slight downside is that the picture quality of the main feature is not great - looking like a straight port-over from VHS and the so-called 5.1/DTS sound may be pushing something out through all 6 speakers, but it gets a bit mushy at times and some dialogue is difficult to follow. No matter though, Dead and Buried is certainly something of a minor classic and deserves to be in every horror buff's collection.

5 out of 5 stars Wow....another old-time horror gem.......2006-09-21

Very pleasantly surprised with this gem. Kind of reminds me of a cross between "The Fog" and other movies whereby a group or town is like a cult pursuing their own little game.....well acted...well paced....great scenery...excellent screenplay...great topic...well cast...very little to complain about...the only problem I found with it at all, and it is so minor, and it's only this one thing, is how fake the doctor's head looked when he snorted acid...lol....other than that the movie is an A+ all the way through.....keeps you surprised throughout...never predictable....very original and a brand new take on zombies, which are an evil group I never much cared for to begin with. No longer the slow methodical harmless type zombies of the past. What makes these so deadly is that they never appear to be zombies at all. Also look for small bit parts from Robert Englund and Michael Pataki and a great performance from Jack Albertson in his last role. Great job by the people in charge. Well done! Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars welcome to potter's bluff,we want you to stay...............forever!!!.......2006-05-20

i first saw this grim little shocker on cable in the 80's and thought it was great. this 2 disc set is very much worth the price and has a wealth of extras.
potter's bluff is a small town with a problem, people keep getting killed in very bad ways, only later to show up as townfolk.sheriff dan gillis is at a lose to explain this and the more he digs the less he likes this little problem.
the transfer is great and this little shocker will keep you guessing til the very end(and what an end)!! so if you like your horror movies that are a little out of the normal you'll like this one

Description

A surprising find of letters and diaries in a basement in Switzerland revealed a love affair between the 29-year-old Carl Jung and his first patient, Sabina Spielrein. This unique relationship is dramatized based on the letters of Jung, Speilrein and Sigmund Freud in a riveting new film by Elisabeth Marton. Director Elisabeth Marton combines letters and photographs with dramatic re-enactments and dream-like imagery to offer a mesmerizing portrait of an important woman lost in a history penned by men. Marton's unique documentary ensures that we will indeed remember the name Sabina Spielrein.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Nicely executed and focused, if a little shallow.......2006-11-06

The story of Sabina Spielrein is becoming more well known. This is one of two movies on her life now. There are several books. As more research and scholarship is done, it is apparent that Sabina probably did NOT have a love affair with Jung as depicted in - and central to - this film. The definitive Sabina Speilrein movie has not been made yet, it my opinion. It seels that many people sense a sort of 'grander mystery' behind Speilrein's story when they first hear it, but this film only hints at that rather than unfolding it further. But this attempt does what it does well.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating "docudrama" on the hidden history of psychoanalysis .......2006-09-13

This is a very interesting "docudrama" on a little known episode in the history of psychoanalysis. It tells the story of how the young Carl Jung treated his first patient, and how their doctor-patient relationship eventually developed into a passionate love affair. This affair was unknown until 1977, when Spielrein's diary and several letters were discovered in the basement of a building in Geneva, Switzerland, nearly thirty years after she had died. In the film we learn how Spielrein wanted to have a child with Jung, how Jung broke off the relationship, and how Spielrein coped with his rejection. One of the most interesting aspects of this film is how Sabina Spielrein made important contributions to the history of psychology, yet they were generally unrecognized publically by Freud and Jung. The film tells the story by dramatic recreations, narration, authentic photographs and letters. It is a very professionally made film, and the dramatic recreations are acted well and fit the film perfectly. I loved this film and it is a wonderful tribute to Ms. Spielrein. Sadly, Spielrein died in a Nazi concentration camp in 1942. If you are at all interested in Carl Jung and the history of psychology you MUST have this film. I saw it in the spring of 2006 in Chicago, and it haunted me for weeks. It is a very powerful film, almost Shakespearen in mood, tone and feel. I HIGHLY recommend it.

Description

Something very strange is happening in the quite coastal village of Potters Bluff where tourists and transients are warmly welcomed, then brutally murdered. But even more shocking is when these slain strangers suddenly reappear as normal, friendly citizens around town. Now the local sheriff (James Farentino of THE FINAL COUNTDOWN) and an eccentric mortician (Oscar winner Jack Albertson in his final feature film performance) must uncover the horrific secret of a community where some terrifying traditions are alive and well...and no one is ever really DEAD & BURIED.

Robert Englund (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET) co-stars in this genuinely chilling horror hit written by Ronald Schusett and Dan O'Bannon (ALIEN), directed by Gary A. Sherman (POLTERGEIST III) and featuring ultra-grisly gore effects by Oscar winner Stan Winston (TERMINATOR 2, ALIENS). DEAD & BURIED is now presented completely uncut and uncensored (including the controversial 'hypodermic needle in the eyeball' scene), and loaded with revealing Extras.

4 out of 5 stars A Groovy B Movie.......2007-05-16

Well, it really is a fun ride. I thought it was well put together for a B-movie. If you don't like B Movies, you probably won't like this one. But if you like movies like "Lewis and Clark Trail of Blood" or "The Creeping Terror" you'll like this on.

1 out of 5 stars zero stars!.......2007-02-13

this "movie" was just plain awful! i rented it because the cover and the title looked and sounded ridiculous. i enjoy "good, bad" movies. this was just atrocious! as for the other reviewer, if i had a relative in this "movie", i would never have told anyone, period!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent movie.......2007-01-29

5 out of 5 stars From the Inside.......2007-01-10

If you want to know about DL's Hysteria from the inside, watch this video. Joe and Phil are the bulk of the video, although the other members of the band take part. Just a lot of what they went through, and how they made this 'record' that almost wasn't. Just a lot of great information, if you are looking to learn more about a legend of a band.

5 out of 5 stars hysteria.......2007-01-10

Any Def Leppard fan would enjoy this. Honestly, even if you didn't know who they were, you still would have to find out more about this band.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and informative.......2007-01-05

This is a great dvd for the Def Leppard fan. I loved the details about the making of Hysteria. You really get a feel for the attention to detail that went into its creation. I enjoyed it. Well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD.......2006-11-10

If your a Def Leppard fan than this is a must have for your collection. Lot's of cool info on what they went through to make this album and so much more. I highly recomend this to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Know why it took so long.......2006-03-07

This is one of the better "classic albums" dvds because not only does it give away a lot of little details about how the record was made, but it gives you some great extras, a couple acoustic performances and a lot of bonus material. I always wanted to hear about how Rick Allen got back on the drums, great inspirational story. If you're a Lep fan, check this out. I saw the Hysteria tour in two cities and this dvd brought back a lot of the feelings from that time period. A lot of people think this is a sell-out album, but whatever. I always thought it was cool that the Lep had such a polished sound, especially vocally. Cool to find out how they did it.
