Live Concert Footage? Not!.......2006-11-17
Listening to anything made by the Allman Brothers is always something I look forward to. Whether it's an album or music accompanied by an image on a screen, I can always find something worthwhile if Gregg, Duane, Dickey Betts, and the rest of the band are behind the music.
However, every silver lining must have a black cloud and "The Best of the Allman Brothers Band" certainly wins the award as one of my greatest Allman Brothers disappointments. The reason: This is NOT an Album Brothers Concert. In fact, there is no live footage of the band at all. It is nothing more than a DVD depicting a guy dressed in light colored blue jeans and a jean shirt, sitting in a studio, strumming his guitar and showing the viewer how to play each of these eight featured songs.
What probably bugs me the most about this DVD is the misleading title. What would most people expect if they saw a DVD on the store shelf titled "The Best of the Allman Brothers Band"? I think most of us would assume the same thing I did: That this was either a concert DVD with live performances or a collection of performances from different shows assembled together into a single DVD highlighting the band's greatest songs performed live. Who would think, with a title like this, that the DVD is actually a guitar instructional showing how to play the featured songs? If I had read the full name including subtitle, I would have realized what I was getting into. It says "The Best of the Allman Brothers Band: A Step by Step Breakdown of the Guitar Styles and Techniques of the Allman Brothers Band guitarists Duane Allman and Dickey Betts". However, the placement of this subtitle is difficult to see and I think this was done on purpose. With a title like "Best of Allman Brothers Band" at the forefront, potential buyers/listeners will think it is a performance DVD and will be more likely to buy.
Judging this DVD for what it is, I suppose it's a decent DVD if you're goal is to learn how to play the Allman Brothers songs on guitar. Dave Celentano is the host of this instructional DVD and he steps viewers through the process; identifying the chords, bridges, and other technicalities involved in playing these great tunes. The camera work is pretty good, too, with the camera focusing on the placement of the fingers of the left hand on the frets for the large picture and the strings to strum with the right hand shown on a smaller picture-in-picture, in the bottom- right hand corner of the screen. This is nice because students can see both images and can learn more quickly how to perform the songs properly. The fact that he slows the song down is also nice because less experienced guitar players can gradually develop their skills. But it is still rather boring and the learning experience (not to mention the entertainment value!) could have been enhanced by including live Allman Brothers music. I watched this DVD hoping that, at some point, it would show Betts or Allman playing the guitar with a close- up of the finger action on the guitar strings. This might have improved my overall opinion of the DVD because at least I would have been entertained with some great music. But this never happens. The camera remains focused on the host and his guitar lesson.
When I first placed this DVD in the drive and started to watch, I was really peeved at the makers of this DVD for leading me to believe it was a live performance. I was ready to sit back and enjoy some great live music but instead I was greeted by a poorly dressed guy showing me how to properly press my fingers against guitar strings. When I first started to watch this DVD, I was annoyed to the point where I was ready to give it a one- star rating and write a blistering negative review. But now that I have my emotions under control, I feel it's only fair to also consider what this DVD really is and rate it based on that. This is a guitar lesson guide that offers some good guitar instruction with some trivia about the band that most every Allman Brothers fan already knows. It offers some good points but unless you are actively playing guitar, there is little to enjoy with "The Best of the Allman Brothers". Even if I was presently taking guitar lessons, I would much rather see a live performance.
deceptive title.......2006-07-21
There are no allman brothers performances on this dvd. Someone named Dave Celentano "explains" some guitar music. This DVD sucks! I would rate this "zero" stars if I could.
ABB live at the Beacon.......2005-01-11
This was a awsome show, all ABB fans will dig this show. Derck Trucks is on his way to being the next Clapton, his slide work was super. Lots of bonus stuff as well, good bet to buy.
