Customer Reviews:
Ms. Sills, we're going to miss you!.......2007-06-29
It's almost spooky: As a long-time fan of Ms. Sills, I had borrowed and watched this DVD only about a week ago. And TODAY I find out she's been striken with lung cancer and isn't expected to survive. And it's bringing me to tears.
Back in the 1970s when boys my age idolized rock stars and professional athletes, MY idol was Beverly Sills. A coloratura soprano, Beverly Sills (or "Bubbles" as she was nicknamed) wasn't exactly a critical darling; from a purely technical point of view she wasn't up there with Maria Callas or Jessye Norman. But she did bring a certain populism to the stage, a warmth and enthusiasm that endeared her to audiences everywhere. I thought she was wonderful, and I even had an 8-track tape of hers that I would bravely sing along to (but only in the privacy of my old Mercury Bobcat). But doing that falsetto today, at the age of 48, simply is no longer possible, alas.
As for this DVD, it's a wonderful retrospective of her career as opera superstar: Not only performing in lush and glorious operas, but also guest starring on "The Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson (back when that program still had class), "The Carol Burnett Show," even "The Muppet Show." Few people younger than 30 will even recognize the name; but for those of us who remember Beverly Sills so fondly, it is a sad time indeed. As an online friend of mine said, "When she passes, Opera will lose far more than a singer; the Arts as a whole will loose an invaluable spokesperson."
Excellent historical record .......2007-01-18
I bought this mainly because I am a "die hard" Bastianini fan. This disc comes with bonus tracks from "Opera Cameo". In this, Bastianini sings Madamigella Valery", "Pura siccome un angelo", "Di Provenza il mar, il suol"etc..
But by watching about this American soprano, I realized that also she was a wonderful singer.
Sills Soars - again!.......2007-01-14
This is a wonderful collection of snip-its representing the long and fascinating career of Beverly Sills. I found it hard to believe that many of these stretch back almost 30 years when she was at the height of her career. You get to hear her in a number of classic roles in opera she is known for - "Manon", "Julius Ceasar", "The Ballad of Baby Doe", as well as enjoying her charm while guesting on numerous television shows like the Johnny Carson show, Dinah Shore show, and others. The quality is very good, and serves as a great reminder of what a memorable and fantastic singer she was. I'm happy to have been able to enjoy hearing her "live" as well as meeting her in person, and now have something to bring back some of those great memories.
Fascinating docu on Bubbles - but too little singing!.......2006-12-23
I loved this DVD a lot and I'll definitely watch it again. Even though not many of Sills' performances survive on DVD many videoclips of her art are available to be enjoyed. Here we hear Sills as the lovely lyric coloratura she was. Her silvery voice may not be everyone's cup of tea but it enthralls me every time I hear it. It's just beautifully pure and yet shockingly expressive. If you love Beverly Sills or want to discover the magic of a lyric coloratura, buy this DVD. The only drawback for me was that it's more docu than singing.
As for the former reviewer's unprofessional remarks on Maria Callas (A colleague Beverly Sills had nothing but praise for) ... I suggest you be more careful when it comes to judging people you've never met. La Callas the singer is for the audience, Maria the woman is none of our business.
This is not a recital.......2006-12-23
I was very disappointed. To begin with, the title is a real turn-off. "Made in America." As though that had something to do with her wonderful voice and personality. Callas was born here too, and she was a gorgon. I almost didn't buy this DVD because of that. I hate this country. Sills sings (I didn't watch the excerpt from Traviata) only 2 arias complete, Cara nome at the age of 10, and Una voce poco fa in an enchanting performance. Also she sings a few pop tunes complete. It's all excerpts (SHORT ones! VERY short!) and snippets. It's very disappointing and unsatisfying. I learned a lot about Sills (which I'm glad and grateful for), but I got bored with the flick. The movie covers her life from age 3 (when she started performing) up until age 51 when she retired from singing. I never realized how good (that's an understatement) Sills was or how much I loved her. There's nothing stuffy or pompous about her. She's nice and fun. After thinking that, sigh, it dawned on me just how many (almost all that is available) CDs and DVDs of Sills I own. If Netflix offered it (it doesn't right now anyway), I would recommend renting this DVD (to learn about Sills' fascinating life and to get a glimpse of her glorious voice and magical personality), then instead of this, buy compliations and complete operas with her in them. I'll sigh never watch this again. Sills, Sutherland, Pons - those are my favorites. Though before I discovered what a monster she was, I enjoyed Callas too. Sorry. I like to think well of my heroes. Oh hell. Buy this DVD. It's fascinating and there is SOME music in it, in bits and pieces.

If music be the food of love, then Under the Desert Sky is an Italian feast. Andrea Bocelli performs live at the Lake Las Vegas resort for this DVD and bonus CD, featuring some of the world's greatest love songs. In straying from the largely classical repertoire that helped shoot Bocelli to stardom, he is able to take more contemporary material and give it the sheen of timelessness. Most of the selections are in Italian, Spanish, or French--Romance languages, naturally. Highlights include the swoon-inducing "Amapole," the pitch-perfect "Canzoni Stonate," and even a reverent "Can't Help Falling in Love." Through it all, Bocelli's relaxed, self-effacing manner and confident delivery make for an intimate concert experience. Bocelli is also backed by a terrific group of talented musicians, including pianist and executive producer David Foster. A real show-stopper: Bocelli's duet with the Tony-winning Aida singer Heather Headley; the blending of their voices suggests the duets of Aaron Neville and Linda Ronstadt at their most sublime. There's only one real clunker: "Besame Mucho," which is so innately cheeseball that trying to deliver it sincerely only makes it more cheesy. Included is a CD with nine tracks, including a different version of "Can't Help Falling in Love," with a duet by American Idol's Katherine McPhee, and a soulful "Canzoni Stonate" with Stevie Wonder. DVD extras include interviews with Bocelli, Foster, and others (be sure to turn on your subtitles manually if you're not an Italian speaker). That's amore! --A.T. Hurley
Description
Performed on a specially constructed floating stage in Lake Las Vegas, a resort community 20 miles south of Las Vegas, this historic performance captures Andrea Bocelli's first ever pop concert. Under the Desert Sky, which co-stars Tony® winner Heather Headley (Elton John's Aida), represents a new era for the Tuscan-born singer. Spanish guitars flourish, traditional Latin percussion seductively keeps the tempo, accordions and harmonicas provide haunting ambience. Highlights include "Somos Novios" - Perry Como had a hit with it as "It's Impossible" - and "The Prayer," a duet with Heather Headley, David Foster and Carole Bayer Sager's Oscar® nominated song from Quest for Camelot. Capping the program is a new song, "Because We Believe," by David Foster with lyrics by Andrea Bocelli and Amy Foster Gillies which was written for and introduced at the 2006 Torino Winter Olympics.

Customer Reviews:
This DVD is just plain MAGNIFICENT!!!!.......2007-07-08
WOW, is the one word that stands out when I play this DVD/CD. I never liked Andrea Bocelli (not crazy about Opera) until I saw his first ever "Pop" Concert. There's no better way than to spend an evening with someone you love watching and listening to the most Beautiful Spanish, Italian and even French Love songs. The Orchestration he uses is Superb. The Visual Clarity and Audio (especially when using DTS) on this DVD stands out as the Premiere DVD to watch when you want to watch a "Live Concert". Nothing comes close!
It's simply Magnificent!!
A real treat for Bocelli fans.......2007-06-12
If you are a fan of Andrea Bocelli, this is a "must have" DVD and CD combo.
Bocelli - Under the Desert Sky.......2007-05-13
This DVD came with the CD - great bargain for the price. The mix of songs was great and while watching the DVD, I felt like I was in the audience. The background, setting, etc., was just as relaxing to watch as listening to Andrea Bocelli sing.
Andrea Bocelli Under the Desert Sky.......2007-04-02
The ultimate in listening and enjoyment. A good variety of songs and a wonderful choice of entertainment at home or traveling.
Excellent.......2007-03-30

Product Description
In many ways Federer is much like the man he succeeded at the All England Club in 2001. Federer showed his former idol the door with a sensational performance. The fourth-round thriller ended Sampras' remarkable reign - at least for the moment.
Customer Reviews:
GrassCourtDrama.......2007-07-05
Tennis drama doesn't get better than this, especially in light of what Federer has accomplished since that match in 2001.
One dominant era ends as another one begins.......2006-11-02
It is the classic tale of the changing of the guard as the seasoned veteran is taken down by the upstart heir apparent to the throne. Sampras owned Wimbledon since '93 and his only loss was to Krajicek in '96, but Federer at the 2001 Wimbledon showed the great potential that he has, but still wouldn't be fully realized until a year later when he won the 2002 Tennis Masters Championship and the rest is history. He has dominated tennis since like no player before him, including Sampras. Nadal has been the only player able to show that Federer is beatable, even if it's only on clay. Sampras was on his way out and would retire the next year at the U.S. Open and Federer was just getting going. Both were at the top of their games on that day during the 4th round of Wimbledon. It was a great match with the classic Sampras serve and volley with Federer showing great poise under pressure which has become his trademark. When you watch Federer or Sampras, you can't tell if they are down or up in the match, they just play with the killer blank face. Sampras has a record 14 Grand Slams with seven of those at Wimbledon and was ranked #1 6 straight years. Federer has 9 slams at 25, 4 straight Wimbledon titles and is the first man in the Open era to win at least 10 titles three straight years in a row. Get the DVD to see history as they will both go down at #1 and #2 in the history of men's tennis. Which order they go is up to you, but there is no debating they are the two greatest ever. Sorry Laver. Sorry Borg. If Agassi didn't lose so many finals to Sampras, he would have went down as #2 behind Federer.

ENGLAND LOVES THE BLUES.......2007-07-05
Not much to add to Perrys great review, but mention should be made of the accompanying 2opage booklet, includes photos of the artists and great memories and facts by the great English blues researcher Mike Rowe.
Sound and vision on these wonderful performances are as good as you can expect some 40yrs after the events---back in the days when us English boys used to put on shirt and tie, nice suit and go to the concert.
If you have the previous 3 releases in this series, this is a great addition,if you have any interest in blues history, essential.Thank you to everybody who put this release together--wonderful!!
This IS the Real Blues!.......2007-06-30
This series originally came out during the Year Of The Blues (2003) and provided us with glimpses of the real originals in this genre. The first three volumes gave us a lot of wonderful clips of Wolf, Sonny Boy, Memphis Slim, Otis Rush, Muddy, T-Bone, Big Momma, Lonnie Johnson and so on. The German settings were a bit sterile and often staged to look like a Juke or with strange back drops of urban America. This set, from 1963-1966, is more like a concert. And it's great!
The concert format with an appreciative audience is really fantastic and well done for the time. We see Sonny Boy Williamson in three performances with the harp in his mouth sideways and playing with his NOSE! He is cool, no wounder he taught Little Walter (whose only recorded performance is in Vol. 3 of this series!).We also see Hubert Sumlin play with Sonny Boy on his second offering in this show. He turns in one of his most unusual solos in "Getting Out Of Town"- very chromatic and almost jazzy! We see Muddy as a stand up singer (no guitar), on "Mojo" and in two bonus performances. He has Matt "Guitar" Murphy playing behind him on this one (who was playing with Memphis Slim at the time). There is a rare look at the great Lonnie Johnson, who plays by himself and shows us why he is one of the original inventors of the Urban Blues guitar style. Big Joe Williams gives us a close up view of his famous nine string guitar.
Lightnin' Hopkins plays his distinctive Texas-style acoustic blues, with a few tricks on the fretboard as well. Howlin' Wolf puts in, to me, his best ever filmed performance-it's worth the price of the whole thing!!! He does an update of "Smokestack Lightning" (without its famous riff) and "Don't Laugh At Me" in a "Killing Floor" groove, a song which had just been recorded. And we also see a young Hubert Sumlin playing with Wolf and also with Sugar Pie Desanto's female input (these shows always had at least one female performer).
Big Joe Turner does his usual big voiced thing and he has Otis Rush on lead guitar, it's a fantastic performance, one of the best insight's into Otis's guitar style we've seen. A bonus in this tune is that we see maybe the only existing footage of pianist Little Brother Montgomery who wrote "The First Time I met the Blues" and "I Can't Keep From Crying"-this is a rarity. Also scarce is film of drummer Fred Below, who gave the beat to Chess Records. Fred plays on this tune and in Junior Well's section.
Junior Wells is in his James Brown groove (he always did this! In Australia in 1991 when I saw him he led off with "I Feel Good"). He does Ray Charles'"What'D I Say" in a JB style, but we hear no harp! Sister Rosetta Tharpe, one of the first US Blues/Gospel acts to crack the UK, finishes the set with two of the bonus tracks. They are superb as is Muddy Waters' two bonus tracks staged and filmed at a railway station-very effective. His slide playing (standing up) is another extremely rare view of Muddy.
This is one of the most historic releases for urban blues yet available. The sound has been remixed by Eddie Kramer (of Jimi Hendrix fame) and Reelin' In The Years Productions have done it again! I hope they can find more of these rarities soon. We need the Fillmore Concerts that were on PBS in the late sixities. Get this for your Blues collection and check the price, what a bargain!
great great great.......2007-06-27
this whole thing is fantastic. sonny boy, lonnie johnson, muddy...the wolf is unbelievable. the unknown drummer that the package mentions is in fact willie big eyes smith. It is easy to tell that it is him because of his playing style and he is still around playing great!

Wonderful Music.......2007-06-23
I really enjoyed the Platinum Tenors. Their voices blended so well. When they were singing in unison it was difficult to tell that it wasn't just one voice. When I listen to "The Three Tenors" I always feel like it is a competition, Not so with these guys.
The to Brazilian sopranos are magnificent. I especially liked the one who sang "Juliska from Budapest." She has a marvelous upper range and quite a stage presence. BTW, her name is Carla not Clara.
The Dutch Blonde, on the other hand, was a disappointment. She has a nice little voice, suitable for musicals and light opera, but not the caliber of the two Brazilians. She needs to work on her enunciation and pronunciation. There is a difference between "begged" and "bagged" as well as between "memory" and "mammary." She is the main squeeze of Pierre Rieu, Andre's son and and stage manager.
I got a kick out of the violinist playing the banjo, the clarinetist playing the bag pipes and the dancing harpist.
The brunette in the Choir (can 5 women be classified as a choir?) sure knows how to use her eyes.
I thought the choreography left much to be desired. Something you might expect from a high school production
I really enjoyed the bright colors in which the women members were dressed. The fact that everyone was smiling and seemed to be enjoying themselves was also a plus. I'm sure that much of that was arranged, but it came across well. The audience surely enjoyed themselves.
He is a bit of a ham, but it comes across well. BTW, that is a Strad he is waving all over.
Fantastic!.......2007-06-07
If you can purchase only one DVD this year, this should be the one you buy!
Andre Rieu - The Homecoming.......2007-05-19
My wife totally loved this DVD. However, I was not nearly as pleased as she was. When I ordered this DVD I thought I was ordering a totally different artist. Imagine my surprise. However, not all bad - my wife now thinks I have class.
Andre Rieu - The Homecoming.......2007-05-09
Enjoyable. Full of music that was well selected, well played and well sung.
andre does it again!.......2007-05-08
As usual Andre and his performers entertain greatly and this one is no exception. Thoroughly enjoyable and recommended.

The Beatles - Let It Be - Limited Collector's Edition: 1 Disc 9GB Dual-Layer DVD by Audio Tape Inc.
A T.V. Special played in 1970. Originally it was entitled as 'Get Back' showing the Beatles rehearsing, jamming and performing for their new songs. This is the only documentary film released officially and was then changed to be called 'Let It Be'. It marks the ending of the career of the Beatles (John Lennon, Paul McCarthy, George Harrison, & Ringo Starr). A message about the career of the Beatles told by the Beatles themselves. This video has won the 1966 Grammy Awards for "Best Music Video, long form". The Beatles had, as Paul said at the end of the video, "united for somehow, some way". The band was filmed rehearsing and recording songs. It tried to show the creative process of making a Beatles album. But it was at that time when the Beatles were all fighting with each other, so it really showed how the Beatles were breaking up. They argue with each other and are concerned with their own individual songs, rather than the group songs. However, they weren't always fighting and it gives a look at the process of making the songs and working them so they would sound better musically. This is a documentary and it is interesting because it is real! Relive The Beatles Music, Genius, & Magic! It is now in the Public Domain (out of copyright period).

DO NOT BUY THIS!!!!.......2007-06-30
This is bootleg and a bad one at that! the whole disc is one big glitch! do not buy this ever!!
Let it be a rip off or I feel like THE fool on my hill!!!!!.......2007-06-07
Bear in paradise whatever they are called. Get them off of Amazon. I paid over 55 bucks thinking thinking I was getting something special. Obvious bootleg. The freeking pictures and all are wrong, etc. etc. etc. These scums even lied-special book included etc. etc. Sorry folks for writing in haste and not taking the time to critique as properly but I am freaking pissed. Don't ever purchase from these bloodsuckers. Bought a couple of decently priced ones as gifts, at least they were not bootlegs and the price was decent.
repeat don;t by from bear in paradise or whatever they are called. they are criminals.
Let it be Limited Collector's Edition.......2007-04-24
This is hardly a collectors edition. It is a bootleg copy of the VHS. No other information or liner notes. Sound and picture are bad. But you get to see the Beatle's create some fine tunes. The rooftop concert is worth owning the video. Just wish I could have gotten one of better quality. 5 stars for content, 2 stars for quality of video.
quality and performance varies.......2007-04-14
i've purchased three of these (2 off of ebay and 1 here) and i can say that not all 'copies' of let it be are created equal. the best i've come across so far is the 2 disc version with all the additional footage. so if you're going to get one make sure it's that one.
shilling th ereviews.......2007-04-12
Look at the "see all my reviews" by the only reviewer to give this product 5 stars. It is hard not to get the impression that such 5* reviews are consistent with those that would have been written by the vendor offering for sale illegal bootleg copies of DVD material. As such, I do not find his/her reviews credible at all and wonder why Amazon allow them to stand.

With his trademark happy hair and spirited band comes Dan Zanes in his first-ever DVD, a concert/video collection of sing along melodies blending rock, folk, and global rhythms into a homespun musical menagerie. Formerly with the Del Fuegos band and riding on the success of seven CDs, Zanes presents All Around the Kitchen! featuring nine musical selections performed live in concert at New York's Knitting Factory. Whether familiar songs such as "Hokey Pokey" and "Polly Wolly Doodle," or lesser known numbers like "Malti," Zanes takes traditional music, winsomely turns it on its head, and adds such diverse instruments as accordion, banjo, upright bass, mandolin, and ukulele. On the program's alternative track, viewers can choose among a half dozen music videos pulsating with kids, street scenes, dancing, singing, and jubilant acoustics. There is "House Party Time," "All Around the Kitchen," and "Hello" as seen on Noggin, as well as "Jump Up" and "Go Down Emmanuel Road" performed on Sesame Street. Zanes' soulful musicians, contagious enthusiasm, and all-inclusive approach to music make this a song-and-dance fest where everyone finds a voice. (All ages) --Lynn Gibson

visually dull.......2007-05-25
The concert and videos are not visually appealing for the young ones. The image quality and footage of concert is a VERY small step above amateur. If your child is a fan of the colorful Dan Zanes videos on TV, this video is not the same.
Great Video.......2007-05-10
My 2 1/2 yr. old loves to dance around to this video and I enjoy watching it with her. It's a little bit hip (so you don't feel like you are watching Barney) but still kid friendly.
Dan Zanes Rocks!!.......2007-05-02
Well every time they play one of the songs on the Disney Channel my daughter goes nuts...so when I saw that he had a movie I thought PERFECT!!!! Well I was right my 15 month old daughter loves the silly songs and dances with Dan and his band. Very unique music... even I don't mind watching it. Everyone can get into Dan 's music. We love this DVD and hope he makes another one!!

I think Dan Zanes is just great. I can't stand the majority of kids' music, but Dan Zanes & a small handful of others are great. I don't get a headache & my kids love dancing and singing along. These videos are great--you feel like you are a part of them. We've played this at birthday parties. Every child is up & dancing in no time!

Those who have enjoyed this program on PBS need only be told that it is available on home video. André Rieu is a master of light classical music, and here he is at his best. The program was taped live, outdoors in the Piazza de la Republica in the Italian cty of Cortona. Rieu addresses the audience in fluent but sometimes charmingly awkward Italian, with English subtitles. From the opening moments he has the vast crowd in the palm of his hand. They whistle for him in "Chanson d'amour," clap in unison for the "Toreador Song" from Carmen, the "Radetzky" march, and the galloping finales of the William Tell and Light Cavalry overtures, and sing along in "La donna e mobile," the drinking song from La traviata, and, most movingly, the Italian national anthem and "Va pensiero," which is almost a national anthem.
The music is basic classical top-40, with an emphasis on opera and a lot of Italian music, including "The Carnival of Venice" and the Grand March from Aida. The performances are full of energy and technically skilled. Rieu conducts, plays his violin, and generously shares the spotlight, notably with soprano Carmen Monarca, mezzo-soprano Carla Malfioletti, and several singing and dancing young ladies who might have stepped out of a Botticelli painting. Visuals include, besides the concert, a charming Tuscan landscape and a ride in a Venetian gondola. --Joe McLellan

We Haven't Left Italy Since!!!!!.......2007-05-13
Watching this video makes our family feel as though we've been magically transported to Tuscany and haven't left there since! What a magical, lively, soothing masterpiece of modern day classical music coupled with just the right mix of Rieus' entertaining charisma set in one the the most beautiful locations in the world!!! A definite item for the do not miss list!!!
Don't miss the wonder of Andre Rieu in Tuscany.......2007-05-03
On April 21st, Alessandra Prado, Carmen Bradley, Lina Navarini, Alexander J. Ariano and I had the opportunity to see Andre Rieu, LIVE, at the Bank Atlantic Center, in Sunrise, Florida, which he kept up calling Fort Lauderdale.
As he enters the room, the sounds of his violin capture our spirits and we knew we were in for a delightful experience. All orchestra members dressed to replicate the times when the Waltz was at its best, to share the magic of Vienna with fans, and to provide us with sheer enchantment through his music.
This is the second time we choose to see him in South Florida and something tells me that we shall continue to go to his concerts for as we watch him we fall under the spell of a man, who seems to love what he does so much, that as we watch we are filled with joy, as he conducts and plays some of the best music ever written.
So, we bought his Tuscany DVD to enjoy this program, which was taped live, outdoors in the Piazza de la Republica of the Italian city of Cortona. One of the amazing characteristics of Andre Rieu is his ability to speak whatever language his audience speaks, and here his charming Italian pronunciation captures our hearts.
This DVD offers English subtitles, an excellent feature if you do not want to miss any of his oratory, which puts his audience in sheer delight.
The music is superb, from the love theme of The Godfather, to Chanson d'Amour, to the classic William Tell Overture, to one of my favorite songs, La Paloma. He plays the Italian National Anthem to the delight of all present.
As with all his DVDs, all we have to do is close our eyes and see him on stage, his broad smile worn as a badge of courage to live life to its fullest, the twinkle in his eye making us wonder what to do to make sure we live our lives in such a way that we too learn to share the best of ourselves with humanity.
Sincerely thank my good fortune to be alive during the times when Andre Rieu is with us, for I have enjoyed his music tremendously.
Our group has decided to follow Andre Reiu's recommendations and we are planning to travel to Vienna 2008... to enjoy his music in Vienna, Austria... thanks to Andre Rieu... we shall visit in 2008!
Good shipping time and excellent DVD.......2007-04-10
I enjoyed seeing this show on cable tv and wanted to buy the dvd of it. It wasn't long after ordering this dvd that it arrived, which was nice. The dvd is excellent quality and I have enjoyed watching and listening to the beautiful music this genius plays!
ANDRE RIEU IN CONCERT LIVE .......2007-02-18
MY SECOND PURCHASED DVD OF LIVE CONCERT. EXCELLENT SHOW WITH MANY, MANY EXTRAS BEYOND WHAT WAS SEEN ON PBS. WOULD RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE WHO LIKES A MIXTURE OF LIGHT CLASSICAL AND SOME MODERN AND ALSO MUSIC TO FIT THE LOCATION OF THE CONCERT.
Andre Rieu in Tuscany.......2007-02-08
After watching the show on public TV, I decided to order the DVD. I invited few friends and we spent the evening enjoying this wonderful mixture of great music, beautiful sceneries, a charming conductor and orchestra without mentioning the participation of the people present at the show in the "piazza". I was happily surprised to discover that the DVD is actually longer than the TV show and gives great insight of the production. Since then I had to order three more of the same DVDs for friends and I doubt that this will be the end of it. Enjoy it! Listen, sing, laugh and cry!
