5 out of 5 stars It is one o' the best video compilation for Depeche Mode.......2006-11-11

It is a great compilation almost the totallity of their videos. If you are a beginner fan of DM, it is one of the best acquisition that you can afore!!!

5 out of 5 stars Worth it for the prostitute alone.......2005-12-31

That's right, a prostitute (belonging to one Martin Gore. I'll explain that in a moment).

Alright, this is the two disc collection, and not the previously released 1 disc collection. On this collection, you're still getting all the great videos included on the first release (21 videos, Stripped through Only When I Lose Myself), as well as an interview and a short film. Despite what others might say, the second disc is absolutely worth buying this for.

First of all, the second disc includes four great videos- But Not Tonight (from the Modern Girls soundtrack, so the video is interspersed with clips from the movie), Strangelove '88, One Caress (a great video, and the reason I bought this collection), and Condemnation (Paris Mix. This video, as well as One Caress, is very different from any other DM video I've seen).

The real treat on the second disc are the three mini films. Each film focuses on a different album (Violator, Songs Of Faith And Devotion, and Ultra). The band members give their thoughts and opinions of each album. I promised you a prostitute.

The second mini film, Songs Of Faith And Devotion, has an interview with Martin Gore in what I believe is his hotel room (it may be his home, but I'm not certain). During the interview, there's a knock at the door. When Martin asks "Who is it?", a trashy woman barges in. Martin looks terribly embarrassed as she says "Time is money" and he tries to shove her back out the door, telling her now isn't a good time, as he's in the middle of an interview. Martin sheepishly returns to the interviewer, who also looks embarrassed by the situation. Another reviewer here said he thinks it was a girlfriend, but I think not. The first thing out of a girlfriend's mouth ins't usually "Time is money", and people don't normally look embarrassed of their girlfriends and try to shove them out the door. In any event, it's a very amusing bit of film.

Oh, and the other mini films are good also (but just try to focus on watching them as you're still laughing from the prostitute bit).

Even if you already own the first 1 disc release, I would recommend getting this set, as the second disc contains a lot of valuable material. The only thing I wish were present on this set is the video for Halo.

4 out of 5 stars Depeche Mode: from Video to DVD........2005-12-13

"The Videos 86>98" documents Depeche Mode's visual history from 1986-1998. It has promotional videos for each single released during this era, and it also boasts a documentary featuring interviews with Martin Gore, Andy Fletcher, Alan Wilder (who was with the Mode from 1982-95), and Dave Gahan, along with producer Flood, manager/producer Daniel Miller, and photographer Anton Corbijn. He's not only the band's photographer, but he also manages the band's entire visual output. In addition to directing 18 of their videos, he's also done much of their album artwork, as well as stage design for the band's tour for the "Songs of Faith and Devotion" LP. Having said all that, this DVD is as much Corbijn's as it is Depeche Mode's. Anton's dark, grainy imagery nicely compliments the mood of Depeche Mode's synth-based music, from the Western-themed "Personal Jesus," to "A Question of Time," to "Walking in My Shoes," to "In Your Room." But that doesn't mean Corbijn dominates the entire DVD. A few promotional clips directed by outsiders also stand out; the best of which is "Only When I Lose Myself," helmed by Brian Griffin. This double DVD set comes with another disc of goodies that weren't included in the now-obsolete single-DVD version of "The Videos 86>98." Four promotional clips are also included: "But Not Tonight" (a dated, but fun video that has scenes from the 1980's film "Modern Girls"), "One Caress," another version of "Condemnation," and an alternative version of "Strangelove." In addition, we have three documentaries promoting "Violator," "Songs of Faith and Devotion" and "Ultra." The first two are filmed by Corbijn, and they're both quite interesting, especially the one for "Devotion," in which we watch a goateed, rail-thin Gahan give his $.02 on the band and the making of the album. Fletcher, Wilder, and Gore also contribute their thoughts, but it's songwriter Gore who provides the most insight and depth. So, if you have the single-disc DVD, should you make the upgrade and get this double disc version? That depends on how much you like the Mode. Casual fans should probably stick with the single-disc DVD, but diehards like myself will enjoy the three documentaries on the second disc, so it's worth revisiting this very fine DVD of one of my favorite groups around.

4 out of 5 stars Depeche Mode-videos 86>98+.......2005-09-05

Lots of great music. All of my very favorite videos by this group.

5 out of 5 stars I love depeche mode..........2005-02-20

Their videos were not groundbreaking (with the exception of enjoy the silence), but with such great music they really didn't have to be. I love depeche mode. They are truly one of my fave groups. Although I don't tend to watch this DVD a lot, it's still good to have if you're a loyal fan. If you're a depeche mode fan then this dvd is A MUST.

5 out of 5 stars A Great video watch from a person stuck in the 1980s.......2004-04-25

I think Depeche Mode were a very underrated group of musicians
From the 1980s through to the present. They were a groundbreaking
British techno-pop group, that some people were not ready for and
therefore didn't apreciate.This quartet from a london suburb'who
took its name from a french fanzine or magazine were popular mostly with the british dance crowd in the early 80s.they didn't really make their North American debut untill
late 1985,with their modest hit "People are People"(Which isn't
included on this DVD).And in 1989 they released a film\concert
album at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena California, titled "Depeche Mode 101,directed by DA Pennabaker. There is one live video taken
from this concert which appears on the DVD,titled "Everything counts",which was popular at the time,I think it still looks good
today on DVD ,even after fifteen years.

This video collection captures the groups performance of the period from 86-98 as described in the title of the DVD .This DVD contains 23 videos in a total of two hours ,plus some short film at the end of the DVD ,also included are some videos from their two big albums "Violator" and "Songs of Faith and Devotion"in
the early 90s.

What i think is great about the DVD is that the better videos
are the earlier ones ,up to and including 1992.

From 86-92 i thought they were great,But from 92-98 the band were not as interesting ,I found that during that period ,the
videos looked and sounded the same ,so about half of the video
is top rate,However the sound and picture quality is excellent
all the way through. I would recommend this DVD to any Depeche
Mode fan .If you are looking for something earlier than 1986
then this is not the right DVD for you.If you want something from their last album "Exiter" live, you should purchace the DVD
"One niht in paris.

5 out of 5 stars The Personal Jesus of all music videos.......2002-12-31

This is a fantastic video to watch. The videos themselves tend to be more enjoyable and hypnotic than their early videos ( OK who really wants to see Dave, Marty and Fletch smash plates of jelly ) and in some cases the music ends up being merely incidental as the videos are awe inspiring and truly astonishing.

Stripped tends to have the feeling of being outside on wintry English suburb where the guys smash the cars to bits and act psychotic in a way when they want to see you...

A Question of Time is Anton's first video with them and it is a rather hilarious tale of a man who delivers babies on a motorbike. It's very strange but you just can't help but admire the beautiful scenery that you take in while watching these events happen.

As video after video passes by you tend to think, how can they outdo each other but then by the time Enjoy The Silence comes on it tends to get the goosebumps going and the emotions at searing point. The scenery that is on display is quite breathtaking and shows a king who is walking throughout the world to get away from the madness and to have some peace and serenity. Truly magnificent

The SOFAD songs suffer quite badly apart from I Feel You, they seem more and more like a summing up and they generally tend to be not that interesting ( save In Your Room which is actually a bit creepy ). Maybe I say this because I really don't like SOFAD because of little details that I'll keep to myself for now.

Then into the last straight of videos come in. Barrell Of A Gun is really creepy and I remember when I was young being so scared of this video that I could not watch it. But I finally did one time and thought it was a rather nice song. It's No Good follows and this is a really hilarious video. It travels to this hotel and Depeche Mode play this past-it rock stars playing in bars and wherever people may listen to them. The funny thing is Dave Gahan plays the lead singer who still lives inside a dream that he is god and he is untouchable. The rest of the video is for you to watch

The last video is a non-album track called Only When I Lose Myself and this video is very creepy. Some DM fans think that " without Anton, DM rely on what the director tells them " ( this is true in the case of Exciter's videos ( Dream On is good but other than that - yeuch )). Anyway what is basically the story is that every object is frozen apart from humans. They are either crying or are stumbling around. I wonder if the director of this video fancied the idea of imitating Cronenberg's movie Crash. If so he's got it right perfectly as what you are seeing is undoubtedly as creepy as the movie.

There's a short film to rap everything up and then everything's done. A rather good video to get if you want to see the visual side of Depeche Mode ( or if you just want to see them ). A video that is recommended to anybody that is interested in either the band or maybe even film students who want to capture the essence of visuals.

5 out of 5 stars Going On With Depeche Mode.......2002-12-15

Bonus materials with Anton Corbijn, music video director and Depeche Mode members are so precious as well as the 'cool' and sophisticated video clips. Depeche Mode in this DVD confirm that they never cease to catch up with contemporary music scenes. And even they excel any other bands.

3 out of 5 stars Things to consider before you invest in this:.......2002-10-18

Firstly, I am assuming that anyone considering buying this must already be a pretty big fan of the band so the music is not in question here, it is the collection itself. I myself am a huge Depeche Mode fan and I also collect their videos as well. I bought this at a local music store and spent about 30 dollars for it which I think is unquestionably a large sum of money for ANY VHS tape these days but, being the fan that I am and knowing that I would be getting over two hours of Depeche Mode for my money, I didn't think twice about the investment...

Yes, all the songs on the singles album are here in the same order as the cd so you know you're at least getting THAT much. In my opinion though, DM music videos are truly only for the devout fan who also has an extreme liking for music videos in general. I'm not going to say that I truly disliked the music videos because I really didn't--but I found this Tape nearly impossible to sit through and watch in it's entirity. Many of them are in black and white and seem to slow the pace of the songs down in my opinion and tend to show little of what I want to see---THE BAND. The majority of them feature scantly clad, foreign, Super model type women prancing around in various locations. I found the only saving grace of the music videos was really the music itself only the sound quality of the cd itself is much better of course.

Did I hate this? NO. I DIDN'T. I found some of the music videos to be quite to my liking actually such as my favorite "A question of Time", "Enjoy the Silence" was also impressive and by far the most popular and well known and the bonus material/ short film which features interviews with the band as they discuss the making of some of their videos as well as the 5 albums featured on this. The problem here in my opinion is that yes, two hours is a lot yet in this case, too much to handle all at once. If you are a fan of a particular DM album, I think you would enjoy "Strange" ( Music for the Masses ) and/or "Strange Too" ( Violator ) much better. Each of these is about half an hour long and features the music videos for the given album in sequencial order ( The whole compialation has a general theme and the music videos are similar to one another and the whole thing plays like a short film. Scenes that end on one music video pick up at the next ). I prefer these because it's much easier ( and enjoyable in my opinion ) to watch a themed set of videos for half an hour than to watch two hours worth. Plus, Those two compialations contain other music videos of songs that were unreleased as singles and thus, excluded from this compialation and these are much cheaper might I add.

If you're into Depeche Mode and considering buying one of their VHS tapes then I would also recommend "Depeche Mode 101" as another great alternative to this. No, it's not music videos this time; It's a documentary of their 1987 concert for the masses in Pasadena CA. It features many live tracks and really captures the energy and excitement of DM's music rather than slowing and obscuring it like the music videos tend to do. This also costs about half the price of "The singles 86>98" and is also far more enjoyable.

Finally I have dispersed all of my invaluable advice to you but now it's time for your decision. Obviously I am not a big fan of this VHS itself but the three star rating indicates that it is NOT a total waste that you shouldn't still consider buying. Though not as good as a CD obviously, the sound quality is good for a VHS and the picture is also fine ( the fuzzyness in some of the music videos was intentional ). The presentation of everything is also nicely done, indicating the number and track name of what you're about to see next. So basically, you know your taste. If you really aren't a big fan of music videos in general but love DM, I'd steer clear of this one; as it will probably bore you into simply putting on one of your DM cd's instead. If you love music videos in general, love DM, and love to see beautiful women ( Thus, guys will probably enjoy this more than girls ) then you may really like this. But anyone who decides to buy this other than a collector of DM, should really look into all used options of this one; it's a lot cheaper. I hope I have helped you make your decision and thanks for listening to me.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest DVD Ever!.......2002-09-18

Yes, this is the greatest music DVD ever! Depeche Mode is a band that's known for its superb lyrics, and magnificent sounds, and now with its awe inspiring music videos, it can also be known for its artistic music videos. Unlike rap music videos which are based upon fantacy of wealth and sex, the Depeche Mode music videos are based upon reality of life that exposes the human condition at its worst and best. The Depeche Mode music videos don't need to show band members surrounded with dozens of physically attractive females, or living a lavish style of wealth and greed excess to impress its fans. Fans already know that the Depeche Mode band members enjoy wealth and excess, so they don't need to show what they already have in their music videos. Rap music videos may feel the need to show fans the lavish lifestyle that rappers wish they enjoyed. Therefore, the Depeche Mode music videos are the best of the best in the music industry. These music videos are ART.
