Customer Reviews:
Peter Lorre - a great actor.......2007-07-05
The role of Mr. Moto is such an intriuging character and Peter Lorre plays him perfectly. Mr. Moto's Last Warning has just the right amount of suspense and chracter development. Very nice clean entertainment.
MR. MOTO bad follow-up........2007-06-16
I purchased Volume One of the MR. MOTO series from Fox, and was delighted with the entire package. The restoration of these films is perfect, and for 1930s' programmers, they are surprisingly exciting, with fine production values.
That said, Volume Two gives us the poorest MR. MOTO features, weak scripts, inept comedy relief. Several of these films need "dramatic relief" from the comedy. It was not WW II that stopped this series;
it was the dwindling quality of the films. Save your money.
Mr. Moto's last Warning.......2007-06-14
This is the epitomy of the Mr. Moto films and is an outstanding example from this series of films. Mr. Moto is traveling by ship to the northern Suez port and is killed early in the film shortly after docking. There is a ring of spies and sabotuers that plan to scuttle the French Fleet at the mouth of the canal to stop all marine passage. Moto wears disquises to remain unknown, and yet mixes in well with the enemy agents to learn what they plan. Comic relief comes from several Brits: the Port Commander, and a self centered traveler who has no common sense. People are killed left and right until Moto swings into action and dispatches the entire band of spys. He takes no prisoners and while his methods seem a bit extreme by today's standards, he eliminates the need for a public trial for these patently unscrupulous men.
This is the movie that pulls together all the parts of earlier films and provides a great adventure of non-stop thrills.
I found it a bit period in nature, but completely satisfying in its means of resolving a weighty problem, including coming back from the dead.

Magnificent Moto.......2007-04-10
Both collections 1 and 2 are fun filled evenings. Invite a few friends over and have a Moto party. MUCH better than a super bowl party - Moto is entertaining and even a bit cheesy-campy - not hormonal on screen or off.
Excellent Adventure/Detective Series.......2007-03-29
The Mr. Moto series is an excellent group of adventure/detective movies. Peter Lorre's characterization as Mr. Moto and a fine supporting cast elevates these movies above the usual "B" detective movies.
The restoration of these films by Twentieth Century Fox is excellent. The picture quality of this set(and its companion set) are far superior to the public domain versions of these films.
Please consider two (2) other related purchases (not to mention to other volume of Mr. Moto films) to become an expert fan of Mr. Moto and Peter Lorre. Howard Berlin has written a concise and well-organized overview of the Mr. Moto series, The Complete Mr. Moto Phile: A Casebook. This softcover book is available for approximately $[...] from Amazon.com. Stephen Youngkin has written a book on Peter Lorre, The Lost One: A Life of Peter Lorre. Youngkin's book is one of the most comprehensive and best researched biographes of a Hollywood star - it is a a treasure trove of information about Peter Lorre. This hardcover book is available for approximately [...]from Amazon.com. I gained a greater appreciation for Peter Lorre's acting talents in the Mr. Moto series after I read both of these books. A splendid adventure for family viewing, Windwalker has the distinction of being named the #1 anthropological film of all time in an early 1990s poll of the American Anthropological Association. It's not particularly distinguished in terms of its filmmaking, but this authentic Native American tale is told with exciting vitality and careful attention to details of culture, language, costuming, and age-old traditions. The title character (convincingly played by British actor Trevor Howard) is an aged and dying Cheyenne warrior who, as a young husband and father (played by James Remar in flashbacks), watched helplessly as his wife was killed and one twin son kidnapped by Crow invaders. On his deathbed, he is spiritually revived to solve the mystery of his missing son, and in doing so sets his "windwalker" path to a peaceful afterlife. Featuring an abundance of natural beauty in the mountains of Utah and utilizing sparse, subtitled dialogue spoken in authentic Cheyenne and Crow languages, the film may be too intense for very young viewers (with scenes of PG-rated violence involving enemy warriors, wolves and a bear), but it's essential viewing for anyone interested in Native American cultural history. Independently distributed in 1980 by the Christian family-film company Pacific International Enterprises (whose wholesome founder, Arthur R. Dubs, is profiled in a vintage promo reel included on this DVD), Windwalker was a decade ahead of Dances with Wolves in bringing real, vibrant Indian folklore to a mainstream audience, earning a respectable $18 million at the box office. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Windwalker, right on course with the book.......2006-10-20
If you are lucky enough to have read the book, which came out before the movie, you will find that the movie follows the book exactly. The book is an incredible read, that took me one night to go through the entire book. Read the book also, you won't be disappointed.
The Windwalker by Blaine M. Yorgason (I was lucky enough to inherit a copy that's the 5th printing, 1980)
This was one of the first movies that stirred the echoes of my native ancestors in my soul. Though it does not have native actors, it accurately portrays the Cheyenne and Crow and the beliefs.
Excellent movie and book!!!! Highly recommended.
If only...........2006-10-10
the producers of this film would have had at least a little more respect for native american culture and NOT cast caucasian men with piercing blue eyes in the lead role and other parts, asian kids to portray Cheyenne children, and a woman of obvious hispanic decent to play the lead female role......
If only they would have had consideration for native people of this country and used native actors for ALL parts....especially since there is not one single part of a caucasian character in this film....
If only the makers of this film had not been so typically Hollywood in their approach and casting....this could have been a truly great anthropological film.
As it stands this film is yet another sad and disappointing example of just how little respect the dominant society had (the film was made in 1981) for native americans.
The only good thing they did in this film is to have the actors speak in native Cheyenne / Crow language....although the actors are so horrible at speaking these languages that it almost sounds like a made up dialogue. Again....had the producers of this film used REAL Cheyenne and Crow Indians then this too would not have been an issue.
The musical score also is not at all in keeping with the plot and nature of the film....sounds like they took a soundtrack to some 70's nature documentary and threw it behind the scenes in the film.
Hollywood should re-make this film, with real native actors, speaking in their native language, with a score that truly reflects the drama and message of this story.
JOYOUS MOVIE!!.......2006-08-02
I HAVE ORDERED A FEW TIMES FROM AMAZON AND ALL THE MOVIES ARE WONDERFUL. THIS MOVIE IS BREATH TAKING ,IT IS SO EXCITING TO WATCH. THANK YOU AGAIN

Years ahead of it's time.......2006-07-21
I too am Native American, born on the Cheyenne River Reservation. While it would have been nice if there had been native American actors, this film broke the stereotype and was the first to present the Native Americans in an authentic way in spite of the christian influence of the ending. My first reaction on seeing Trevor Howard in the lead when i saw this film in the theatres was one of disappointment. However, after seeing the picture and the way he portrayed the grandfather, I realized that the director knew what he was doing. The way of life, environment and regalia are 100% accurate, as is the Crow and Northern Cheyenne dialog. While some Native Americans dish the movie because of the lack of Native American actors, they miss the point. For the first time, our culture and lifestyle are accurately reported, in a respectful, dignified way. This is my favorite Native American movie, far superior to Dances With Wolves which I also liked.
You want to like it, but..........2006-06-03
I wanted to like this movie and, in fact, there is a lot to like, so go ahead and buy it. Unfortunately, a lot of the movie has the look and feel of a film school project: really long looks into the camera, really long panoramic vistas, and actors who obviously have not spent a lot of time in the out-of-doors (soft, pale bodies).
Oh, and about those long looks into the camera, I do not know what they could have done about Trevor Howard's blue eyes, but could he not have taken off his contact lenses for that really tight close up?

Amazon.com essential video
The third Rodgers & Hammerstein Broadway hit to go before the cameras, The King and I boasts a career-making performance from Yul Brynner, repeating his stage triumph as the titular monarch and proving to moviegoers that bald can be beautiful. It's Brynner's proud king that provides the fulcrum to the plot, and it's Brynner himself, with his piercing gaze and graceful physicality, that demands our attention.
The story line, adapted from an earlier, nonmusical stage hit, follows widowed English teacher Anna Leonowens (Deborah Kerr) to her new posting as tutor to the Siamese king's formidable mob of children. The collision of East and West affords its winning mixture of drama and humor, and the warm friendship that grows between the king and the patrician teacher provides a poignant, unfulfilled romance between the two wary protagonists. Into this framework, the composers insert a superb score, echoing Asian motifs, as well as a bouquet of lovely songs including "Hello, Young Lovers," "Shall We Dance," and two ensemble pieces for Anna and the royal children ("Getting to Know You" and "I Whistle a Happy Tune") that suggest prototypes for Rodgers & Hammerstein's later hit, The Sound of Music.
For this 1956 production, 20th Century Fox lavished stereophonic sound, widescreen cinematography, intricate production design, and stunning sets. Technically, this newly mastered THX version is the best-looking and -sounding King yet to hit video. But, regardless of format, the glorious music is reason enough to hit "play." --Sam Sutherland

Customer Reviews:
Shall We THINK...?.......2007-06-20
It's been decades since I was in high school, but I still remember being taken aback by the fact that the script for THE KING AND I was included in my junior year English Lit Anthology. As it happens, it was never actually assigned, but I remember being utterly baffled by its inclusion (could a Broadway musical merit inclusion among more serious works of literature?) and at least skimmed through it at the time. Somehow the notion of members of the Siamese court staging a stylized production of UNCLE TOM'S CABIN just seemed too weird--or maybe just not weird enough-- for my adolescent brain. Looking back, I'm not sure why I didn't find that kind of cross-cultural meld more interesting. But it WAS 1968, and ANY Broadway musical (with the possible exception of the then-current HAIR) would have been way too ESTABLISHMENT for my emerging, uh, countercultural tastes.
But giving it the once over, I had to admit that the text embraced at least it one or two serious IDEAS. So maybe it was worthy of inclusion in the anthology. (And, hey, the rest of the book's selections weren't all literary masterpieces either.) Of course, a few years later--or maybe several years later--I would prove to be much more receptive to a work like THE KING AND I. In fact, oddly enough, a few years BEFORE I probably would have embraced it more eagerly too. In my late childhood, early adolescent stage I was just precocious enough that almost ANYTHING that seemed to smack of grown up sophistication would have appealed to me.
So maybe age 16 was just the wrong age to encounter THE KING AND I--especially in 1968. It probably would come as no surprise to anyone reading this that I have seen the film several times as an adult and appreciate it more each time that I do. It does succeed as sheer entertainment and spectacle of course. The "Shall We Dance?" sequence alone is worth the price of admission (or the price of rental or purchase for home view). Visually, that scene--like so much else in the movie--is just gorgeous.
And it's really only been in the past few years that I have come to appreciate the "Little House of Uncle Thomas" production for the masterpiece of interpretive dance that it is.
It may also come as something of a surprise to viewers my age (and younger) just how many of the Rodgers and Hammerstein tunes from the show were musical staples on THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW or were radio hits of the day. Aside from the above mentioned "Shall We Dance?" the show also gave rise to such classics as "Whistle A Happy Tune" and "Hello Young Lovers" and the perhaps somewhat lesser known "Something Wonderful." And musically, they really are something wonderful at that. (And yes, I know that that would have been the last thing I would have owned up to at 16.)
Of course, with all that nourishment for the eye and the ear, did it really need much intellectual heft--or even enough of a message to warrant being included in a high school anthology. Well, there are those who would argue that even the most escapist genres in the popular arts still have a social or cultural subtext. And Broadway musicals are certainly no exception to the rule, even in the B.S. era (that is to say, "Before Sondheim"). While no one would look to even the most sophisticated musical for genuine insight into the human condition, they can address important themes as well as or better than other popular arts.
THE KING AND I at least touches upon such important themes as: justice; classism; imperialism; feudalism; cross-cultural influence; the relation of the sexes; the nature of true nobility; intellectual striving...the list goes on and on. Had I been open to it as a teenager, it certainly could have provided me with ideas enough to chew over--certainly as many as most of the other selections in that literary anthology. And had the soundtrack been available to me as well, it would have certainly provided me with a more than a few moments of musical (guilty?) pleasure even then.
Certainly, I appreciate it now!
a great, classic Rodgers & Hammerstein musical.............2007-05-18
THE KING AND I was one of my earlier introductions to the great body of work, from the team of Rodgers and Hammerstein. This film showcases Deborah Kerr, as Anna Leonowens (with the singing voice of Marni Nixon--the "ghost singer" for many Hollywood starlets) and Yul Brynner, as the King of Siam, at his bald-headed best. This is the musical remake of ANNA AND THE KING OF SIAM, made in 1946, starring Irene Dunne (as Anna Leonowens) and Yul Brynner (as The King of Siam).
THE KING AND I brings important social issues, as relevant in 1862 (the year that the story is set) as they are today. Though, dated in nature, this wonderfully engrossing tale examines racism, sexism and misogyny, as experienced through the eyes of British governess Anna Leonowens, who arrives in Siam (now Thailand) to teach the king's brood of children about history and valuable life lessons. One of the most well-known songs from this film is "Getting To Know You," a sweet, upbeat song, where Anna teaches the children to be more open-minded toward people outside of what is comfortable and familiar to them. I think that best illustrates Leonowens' view of the world, and how it vastly contrasts from the views more commonly voiced in the castle of the king. For starters, The King has many, many, many wives. This includes a beautiful new wife, the young Tuptim (Rita Moreno), who is secretly in love with another man--a forbidden romance. The king keeps wives like he would livestock, and Anna is appalled by this common custom. She sets out to break down the kings' machisimo. But, will she succeed?
Some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard from Rodgers and Hammerstein. The songs include "We Kiss In the Shadow," "Shall We Dance" (made famous by the wonderful dancing sequence, involving Deborah Kerr in a beautiful purple gown, shasaying with an enthusiastic king), and "I Have Dreamed." This film is beautifully acted, marvelously directed, and greatly engaging.
The King And I.......2007-05-13
This movie is not only a classic but will haunt your memory with it's music and characters. Shall We Dance rings not in only your ears but your heart as you watch this sophisticated English teacher become beguiled with the awsome persona of a real live pagan king, bare feet and all. I normally do not like sad endings but this one I tollerated because of the enormous empact the story line had on me. Your service in bringing the best movies to the public is very much appreciated by this buyer.Thank you again, Patricia A. Adams
EXCELLANT.......2007-05-10
this was a gift to a person that 'The King & I' is their most favorite of all times. They enjoyed this immensely, especially the 'extra' scenes that were included
King sized entertainment!.......2007-05-06
What more can I say about this gem from 1956. The music from this classic still makes you want to hum after you watch it! I am amazed each time I watch the dance scene with Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr! Excellent entertainment for everyone!

Cover Girl was one of the big hits of Rita Hayworth's run as movie queen (and World War II pinup girl), a splashy musical geared to the talents of its redheaded star. Be warned: this is the kind of movie in which a single magazine cover turns an unknown dancer into the toast of her own Broadway show, virtually overnight. The corn runs high, but so do the spirits; plus, Eve Arden is around to toss in her trademark one-liners. Gene Kelly, as Hayworth's sulky choreographer and part-time boyfriend, stops the movie cold with his brilliant dance alongside his own reflection. The Jerome Kern-Ira Gershwin songs are middling, except for the lovely "Long Ago and Far Away." One number presents a parade of magazine cover girls come to life (great snapshot of an era). And check out the movie's hats: a parade of insane creations, perched uncertainly on many beautiful women's heads. --Robert Horton

Cover Girl.......2007-05-28
single magazine cover turns unknown dancer Rusty Parker (Rita Hayworth) into a Broadway star overnight and acts as a catalyst for the love conflict between Rusty and her choreographer/part-time boyfriend Danny McGuire (Gene Kelly). With splashy music, dynamic dance numbers, and the usual cheesy love declarations, Cover Girl is worth the watch for classic Hollywood fans. This film also sets the stage for Gene Kelly's famous `Alter Ego' dance which served as the inspiration for his later and even more famous solo dance and song performance of `Singing In The Rain'.

If You Like Cheesy Technicolor Musicals, You'll Like This.......2007-05-05
I've been an avid watcher of old movies for about a year now, and I'm coming to the conclusion Technicolor musicals just aren't my cup of tea. I prefer film noir- give me dramatic, semi depressing, black and white movies anyday over movies like this. This is not to say this movie is bad, it's not, but there's nothing special about it. Entirely too long with outbursts of dance and song typical to a true musical. In musicals, people always feel the need to suddenly get up and sing about every emotion they're feeling, and I find this somewhat lackluster. The plot interested me, as I have a weakness for movies that explore the underbelly of show stardom thrust upon newcomers, but not in the cheery Technicolor fashion this film portrays. But what can I say, maybe 'Gilda' would be more my cup of tea. As for me, I'll leave the cheesy song and dance routines to someone else.
Typical plot with a true star!.......2007-04-28
You know that most movie musicals all have that same plot: boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy and girl face some huge ordeal, then they live happily ever after. However, this one stars the magnificent, beautiful, and truly talented Rita Hayworth, our 'girl', Rusty in this one. I hadn't seen any of her films, but have always been a big fan of movie musicals and actresses from that generation.
"Cover Girl" makes me want to seek out more of Rita Hayworth.
Choreographic genius (recommended).......2007-01-28
To further her career, Rusty Parker (Rita Hayworth) enters a COVER GIRL contest. Keys to unlocking certain Broadway stardom are her grace, face, and talent. Rusty's ontogenesis challenges the budding romance with nightclub owner Danny McGuire (Gene Kelly). Rusty must decide between her familiar fellowship and the aristocrats who disdain them but wield control over her ambitions.
A dance number called "Alter Ego" finds a parallel in the careers of Rusty Parker and her grandmother Maribelle Hicks. In Alter Ego, Gene Kelly dances with a reflection of himself in a manner that transcends 1944 technology and, according to Kelly, is the most difficult film sequence he's ever done. I had to back it up and watch again in amazement. With the exception of this scene, most song-and-dance routines are in the appropriate on-stage setting -- no hokey dancers jumping out of unexpected places. The romantic comedy musical COVER GIRL established Kelly as a choreographer extraordinaire!
Movie quote: "I'm John Coudair, Maribelle, the only thing in your life from now on. So you might as well make the best of it."

Too many skips.......2007-04-19
I expected this to be a top shelf documentary. I was not totally disappointed but note the length of time devoted to Rhodes' days in WWF/WWE. There was great emphasis on the Superstar Graham rivalry and his installment as the 'common man' complete with polka dots. This isn't to say that the rivalry with Graham wasn't worth the time devoted to it in the DVDs, the matches between the two were monumental but it overshadowed Rhodes' tours of other promotions, most notably Jim Crockett's Mid Atlantic/NWA group and Championship Wrestling from Florida (CWF), which Rhodes was a stockholder. I won't even comment on the polka dot phase but Rhodes does say it was his biggest payday. Many of us who had watched Rhodes' career skyrocket sat in disbelief while he became a cartoon character during his second WWF run.
The documentary completely runs through his days in Florida. Most notably there is not commentary provided by Blackjack Mulligan (Robert Windham) and his sons Barry and Kendall. The Windhams were longtime tag team partners. While in Florida there was also the legendary rivalry between Rhodes and Kevin Sullivan, which was not highlighted.
Naturally because WWF/WWE produced this DVD series it is bias towards them. The best part of this documentary? The rumor that Mike Graham, whose father Eddie owned CWF, was paid a cool million for the stock footage.
Dusty Rhodes: The American Dream.......2007-04-03
This video is by far the best video I have seen documentating Dusty's career. I was also able to relive some of his best moments during the NWA days. The only reason I only gave it four stars instead of five was because it totally left out The Midnight Rider era. That was the most flamboyant and memorable eras of Dusty's career and it was totally left out. Could of left out some the stupid WWF crap in it and put the Midright Rider in it instead. That would have made it a much better video. Other than that, it was great!
Dusty Rhodes: Southern Hero.......2007-03-29
Having grown up on Dusty Rhodes and watched his career from the 80's on up(everything from wrestling to car sales commercial cameos in ATL) I consider him a childhood/young adult favorite and a southern hero...and the Dusty Rhodes Story was a history lesson for me, not for the documentary(have to agree with many other critiques...the documentary was moving at times but could've been a lot better) but for the matches he'd wrestled before I was even on the planet. I'd never known that he and the late Dick "Captain Redneck" Murdoch were a tag team and that he'd had numerous clashes with Superstar Billy Graham, Harley Race and the like BEFORE the NWA/WCW era's. AWESOME. Also the matches with Ric Flair, Tully Blanchard, Lex Luger, his feud with the L.O.D. are all here for some good memories. I think what stood out about Dusty was the fact that he prided himself on being a common man and a common man's champion...became an icon without scratching and clawing his way up the ladder of recognition. TRUE SOUTHERN HERO and ENTERTAINER...way ahead of his time.
P.S. THE POLKA DOTS WERE A RIB...MAYBE DONALD TRUMP'LL BITE HIM UNTIL HE FESSES UP @ WRESTLEMANIA.
The American Dream WWE GOT IT RIGHT.......2006-12-24
WWE got it right with this DVD compilation. It was the first DVD comp from WWE that I trulyed enjoyed from beginning to end along with The Road Warriors comp. My only gripe is that there are no Dusty vs Kevin Sullivan matches for some strange reason considering WWE bought the rights to CWF matches from Mike Graham and there are a few matches from Florida on the DVD.
Classic matches vs Superstar Billy Graham from MSG and they were smart enough not to include the second match from the 3 match series which is already on the Graham DVD compilation. Many classic Dustry promos!
Buy and enjoy! LONG LIVE THE AMERICAN DREAM, LONG LIVE DUSTY RHODES!
Extras great, documentary could have been better.......2006-11-24
I love Dusty Rhodes and Jim Crockett promotions back in the day. The documentary was great until the last fourth of it. It goes from talking about the career of Dusty Rhodes to his feud with Dustin Rhodes his son. I think it is great they made up but it completely skips the rest of his career(WCW, ECW, and Independents). It made the documentary seem drawn out. The extras are top notch. I would recommend buying it for the extras.

From "The Ultimate Challenge" To "10 Years In The Making".......2006-09-05
Now I'll be honest, I didn't buy the DVD set (I have the WM 1-13 VHS set from almost 10 years ago) so I don't know what's been edited or changed as far as theme music or anything of that nature.
WrestleMania 6 - The Ultimate Challege was the first international WrestleMania and was a very unique WrestleMania as there was a main event that was never seen or done before on many levels & also another attempt of a new era in the WWF without Hogan as it's champion. Standout matches include Tag Team Champions Andre & Haku vs. Demolition (only because it was Andre's last in-ring appearence), Brutus Beekcake vs. Mr. Perfect, Roddy Piper vs. Bad News Brown (for those who like brawls), Dusty Rhodes & Sapphire vs. Randy Savage & Sherri, Jake Roberts vs. Ted Dibiase, and the Title vs. Title match between WWF Champion Hulk Hogan & I.C. Champion Ultimate Warrior in a rare "good guy vs. good guy" match were the crowd was split between the two & was Hogan's first clean pinfall loss since his return to WWF in '83.
WrestleMania 7 - This was most memorable as WWF's attempt to capitalize on the Gulf War in Iraq through the main event storyline & the theme "Stars & Stripes Forever". The standout matches here were Tag Team Champions Hart Foundation (in their last PPV match) vs. Nasty Boys, Undertaker vs. Jimmy Snuka (only because this began Taker's undefeated streak), Ultimate Warrior vs. Randy Savage in a retirement match and the aftermath that had everyone in the arena crying, Intercontinental Champion Mr. Perfect vs. Big Boss Man (with the last PPV appearence of Andre The Giant), Virgil vs. Ted Dibiase, and WWF Champion Sgt. Slaughter vs. Hulk Hogan.
WrestleMania 8 - WWF's first ever attempt at the "double main event" & this event had a lot of short average matches, some comedic standouts, and the exit of Hulk Hogan, the elevation of Sid as a monster heel, & the return of the Ultimate Warrior (all of which didn't last long). Standout matches here were Tito Santana vs. Shawn Michaels (the beginning of his singles career), Intercontinental Champion Roddy Piper vs. Bret Hart, and WWF Champion Ric Flair vs. Randy Savage.
WrestleMania 9 - WWF went to Las Vegas for this one & back in time to the roman days at Ceasar's Palace with many memorable moments such as Hogan's last WM appearence for almost a decade, the debut of Jim Ross (in a toga), and the entrances of Savage & Heenan. Standout matches were Intercontinental Champion Shawn Michaels vs. Tatanka, Steiner Bros vs. Headshrinkers, Tag Team Champions Money Inc. vs. Hogan & Beefcake, and Mr. Perfect vs. Lex Luger.
WrestleMania 10 - WWF went back to Madison Square Garden with this 10 year anniversary (eventhough WM11 technically would have been the 10 year anniversary) show featuring highlights from the previous WM's throughout the night. The standout matches here were Bret vs. Owen, Randy Savage vs. Crush in a Falls Count Anywhere match (Savage's last WM appearence), the Intercontinental Ladder match between HBK & Razor Ramon, and WWF Champion Yokozuna vs. Bret Hart with Roddy Piper as the referee.
This set of WrestleMania's were a step below the first five but better than the next 5. I would say this is section is for old school fans of the early '90's.
WWE Wrestlemania Anthology ... Worth the Money!.......2006-03-20
I waited a long time for the WWE to release WrestleMania I-XIV on DVD. I must say that overall I was not disappointed. Each WrestleMania is shown in its entirety (with the exception of WrestleMania XI). The WrestleMania DVDs show the original television broadcasts. I owned just about every WrestleMania in their original VHS format. The older tapes of the shows they released were heavily edited in order to fit the program on one cassette. They even edited some matches to make them shorter. The only way you could see all these matches in their entirety was to watch the original television broadcasts ... until now!
Now, here is what is what is wrong with the DVD sets:
-Entrance music for a lot of Superstars is dubbed over with crappy, generic music so the WWE would not have to pay royalties to use these songs.
-Any verbal reference to WWF is edited out
-WrestleMania XIV-X8 blurs out the WWF scratched logo
-The Salt N' Pepper performance at WrestleMania XI was completely taken out so the WWE would not have to pay them royalties
-There are no extra features whatsoever ... just the event itself for every WrestleMania
I hated that all this great entrance music was taken out. The edited out the entrance music to Slick's "Jive Soul Bro," HillBilly Jim's "Country Boy," Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat, Demolition, Big Boss Man's "Hard Time," and Ric Flair's original entrance music to name just a few. I really miss "Jive Soul Bro!" I would have shelled out more dough for these DVDs if they ensured all the old theme music was included. The blurred out WWF scratched logo is annoying but bearable.
Personally, I only purchased the first three box sets of WrestleMania I-XV because I already owned WresteMania XV-21 on DVD. If you would prefer to own copies without all the WWF references edited out, I recommend you do the same and try to buy the original WresteleMania DVD releases off of Amazon or eBay for XV-21. Plus, you miss out on a ton of DVD extras that the original DVD releases are packed with.
Regardless of the gigs I give this box set, I highly recommend to add these DVDs to your collection if you are a professional wrestling fan. Every single match and interview is shown in its entirety. Plus, it is the only way you will get these classic WrestleMania's in DVD format.
WM Anthology Vol 2 - "10 Years In The Making".......2005-11-07
At last, here it is. Every WrestleMania to date. Volume 2 features WrestleMania's 6-10. They are on 5 separate discs, the first 2 of which are double sided, & all appear to be in their entirety. On the plus side, there is very little visual editing, except a few signs here & there that actually say "WWF". Logos however are not blurred. Another plus - Jesse Ventura's commentary is in tact. However, no WW'E' disc these days would be complete without some kinda editing though, & most here is in the audio area, in particular entrance music. Demolition, Akeem, Big Bossman, & Jimmy Snuka (I think that's it) all have their music replaced with generic guitar riffs, & Howard Finkle's announcing is redone for those particular guys, making it sound more like a video game announcer.
There are some incredible moments in this WrestleMania set that still sent shivers down my spine, & I'd like to share some of those moments:
WrestleMania VI - I was a huge fan of Demolition & the Ultimate Warrior. Demolition winning the Tag Title for the 3rd time & the epic Title for Title match still give me goosebumps.
WrestleMania VII - Another Warrior moment (& more shivers) in the Retirement Match vs Randy Savage.
WrestleMania VIII - Bret Hart vs Roddy Piper almost made me cry, along with Randy Savage recapturing the Heavyweight Title, & the brief return if the Warrior to help the 'retiring' Hulk Hogan from a 2 sided attack.
WrestleMania IX - Honestly, not too much sticks out here. I was actually hoping Yokozuna would hold the title for a little longer than the few seconds that he did.
WrestleMania X - Bret Hart pulls double duty, putting on an amazing match against his brother to open the event, & a Heavyweight Title win to close the event, plus the amazing Ladder Match for the Intercontinental Title.
In all, I can't complain. Entrance music editing aside, these were very nicely done. Quite highly recommended.
One good WrestleMania.......2005-11-04
The WrestleMaina featuring Hogan vs Slaughter as the main even is probably the greatest WrestleMaina out there. Alot of good matches but the rest of the set is lackluster. It was a dark period for WWE in 92 and 93 and the WrestleMaina's will show that.

Did we see the same Pay-Per-View?.......2007-01-06
After taking a break from watching WWE that lasted roughly four years (2002 onwards), I recently bought a whole bunch of WWE PPVs to catch up a little. Now, I wasn't crazy about the ones I got (Summerslam 2005 especially), but boy oh boy was this Vengeance an eye- opener. WWE seems to be in really bad shape, but more later, let me have a little summary of the matches first.
The opener between Kurt Angle and Randy Orton was average. They don't seem to harmonise very well, their match seriously lacked coherence. There was one good spot where Angle pulled off eight German suplexes in a row. Apart from that, nothing memorable happened. The ending looked forced.
Then we are forced to watch Eugene vs. Umaga. Now there are 10 minutes of my life I won't get back. No hard feelings, I have nothing against some well- placed, senseless humor in a PPV, it lightens things up, but this was just stupid, pointless, embarassing. It was apparently meant to underline Umaga's power, but failed big way.
At this point, pause your DVD, close your eyes, and think about the great matches Ric Flair and Mick Foley gave us. Flair Vs. Savage, Flair Vs. Triple H, Flair Vs. Hogan, Foley Vs. The Rock, Foley Vs. The Undertaker ... then push "Play" and watch the next 5 minutes of gigantic dissapointment, known as Ric Flair Vs. Mick Foley. Oh, with 2 out of 3 ruling, by the way. Not that it matters. For god's sake, if you have such a ruling, USE IT! Everyone knows that after the 1-0, a 1-1 has to follow to create tension. This kind of match has created dozens of fantastic battles. But this is over literally after 5 minutes!
This is a pure waste of a fan's time and anticipation.
Shelton Benjamin Vs. Johnny Nitro Vs. Carlito for the IC title is by far the best match of the evening. Hands down. Good, fast, well- flowing match with a couple of really exciting moments. Nitro and Carlito are two promising newcomers.
RVD Vs Edge was ... well, let me put it this way: had it been for the IC title, it would have been good. The match itself was indeed nice, but seeing these two fighting for the WWE title doesn't sit well. What qualifies Edge to be a WWE champion? What qualifies RVD? That they have been in this sport for more than 10 years?
Kane vs. Importer Kane wasn't even a rehash of Undertaker Vs. Undertaker, it was the rehash of a rehash of a questionable idea. That being said, seeing these two going at each other was actually pretty freaky. And THAT being said, I wouldn't watch it again.
The John Cena Vs. Sabu Lumberjack Extreme Rules match was as much a disgrace to its origins as the 2 out of 3 falls match earlier. A crash through a table and some moves with a chair doesn't make a match ECW- style. Every TLC match between the Hardy Boys and Edge and Christian from earlier times (god bless them) was more ECW than this.
By the way, this charade also lasted merely 5 minutes.
Now to the main ev ... wait, already? But we haven't seen anything memorable so far, this better be good!
So, the DX is back, huh? I sure hope this doesn't turn out to be as much a parody of itself as the "2 out of 3 falls" and "Extreme Rules" matches.
But it does. Triple H and Shawn Michaels give a little speech before the actual match, but instead of saying anything really funny or witty, they just bellow out their usual catchphrases.
The Spirit Squad is really a damn stupid idea, but they are unquestionably funny. More funny than the DX itself in this match, actually.
Triple H and Michaels aren't the DX, they are playing the DX, and that does make one hell of a difference.
Where are we at with this PPV? What does it do, where is its place in the long, glorious history of WWE/WWF PPVs? I don't know, but it's got to be somewhere at the rock bottom. WWE needs ideas, and it needs them badly. SO badly. Not so long ago, I didn't like the way they treated Chris Jericho. Today I would kill to see him back in the ring.
This whole Vengeance PPV feels like watching some strange revival show.
Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Doink, Kamala, Mick Foley, Kane Vs. Kane ... and Ric Flair. He's the greatest performer who ever lived, but please! PLEASE, Ric, if you want to continue to wrestle, Get.In.Shape! It looks like Foley is beating up just a really old, wrinkly guy.
And the DX won't survive very long, believe me. It will suffer the fate of the nWo. It won't take very long until Triple H and Shawn Michaels will face each other.
The only consolation can be that after great lows, there are usually great heights.
Please, wrestling fans, open your eyes! I've never seen TNA, but it can't be any worse than *this*!
Very Surprised with this one..........2007-01-03
WWE Vengeance 2006
I got this DVD as a present for Christmas. I didn't expect it to be anything good. The main event was DX/Spirit Squad...so I wasn't looking foward to watching this. Surprisingly though, this was a great PPV. It had some slow points, but overall this was a great PPV.
-Disc 1-
Kurt Angle vs. Randy Orton
I liked this match alot better than their first encounter. Their match at One Night Stand just seemed more boring; I may have to go back and re-watch it though. This match is awesome though. It really kicked off the PPV in a good way.
RATING:9/10
Eugene Vs Umaga
This is just a squash match. Eugene bring out some help before the match though, even though they seem to do nothing excpet take a beating after the match. Eugene's help consisted of Doink The Clown, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, and Kamala. I thought Umaga and Kamala had something going for them after the match, but it didn't lead anywhere. Nothing special here.
RATING:3/10
Ric Flair Vs Mick Foley-2 out of 3 falls
You expect something great, but after the first pinfall, Foley snaps. Foley goes hardcore and bloodies up Flair. This match was nothing, but the aftermath is pretty cool.
RATING: 4/10
Intercontinental Championship-Shelton Benjamin(c) Vs Johnny Nitro Vs Carlito
Simply Awesome. Lots of action, one of my favorite matches of the night. All the stars in the match shine very brightly. Carlito hits some awesome moves.
RATING:9.5/10
WWE Championship-RVD Vs Edge
When is the last time I saw a WWE Championship match that was this entertaining? It was a very long time ago. There are no hardcore stipulations to make people look good, it's just a great match. RVD and Edge put on a great show. They show why they belong in the top spot.
RATING:9/10
Kane Vs Imposter Kane
This match sucks. It sucked so bad, that the next night on Raw, they killed the storyline the next night on Raw. Just a big man versus big man match, and not even a good one.
RATING:3/10
Extreme Lumberjack Match-John Cena Vs Sabu
The lumberjacks in this match suck. The ones from ECW aren't special, and the ones from Raw are regular Sunday Night Heat guys. With that said though, this match is good. Lots of good spots. I kind of felt like ECW was made to look like crap in this match.
RATING:8.5/10
Spirit Squad Vs DX
This isn't a bad. This is DX's PPV return. Both Triple H and HBK look strong. This match has alot of funny moments. One of the Spirit Squad members gets really bloody. This match is here just to make DX look good for there comeback. You know who wins.
RATING:7.5/10
-Disc 2-
Contains alot of extras. It has some of the newer DX skits. Some backstage interviews, Torrie Wilson photoshoot, an extra match, and music video. A good add-on to this already great PPV.
D-X IS BACK .......2006-12-28
This PPV is very good. Not all matches are good but the 5-2 handicap match featuring the Spirit Squad anfd D-X is brill and so is the WWE Title match betwee Edge and RVD The DVD Has lots of features espeically with D-X.
DX is Back!.......2006-11-16
Solid PPV
Randy Orton vs Kurt Angle *** 1/2
Umaga vs Eugene * 1/2
Ric Flair vs Mick Foley ***
WWE Championship RVD vs Edge ****
Kane vs Imposter Kane ** 1/2
John Cena vs Sabu ****

Interesting Christian Short film. No subtitles........2007-05-01
51 minutes long without credits. Would have given 5 stars if the first 25 minutes were cut and it had subtitles. A very different way of looking at biblical times lines.
One of the best movies I have seen.......2007-02-13
Personally, I find most movies to be a wast of time, but this is one of the few movies that I have found to be worth while. I highly recommend it to anyone.
end of the harvest.......2004-09-09
This movie not only makes you realize as belivers how we should stand and share all that we believe in, but it is a real thought out movie. One that strikes your intrest to keep watching. The message of the story was very clear.
Excellent and thought provoking!.......2004-05-25
I'm a huge fan of movies, and as a Christian I'm a huge fan of christian movies and "the end of the harvest" is right up there among my very favourites.
This film stars David White (from the excellent Mercy Streets) as a student on campus who knows and studies his bible furiously but is shy about sharing his faith (a common problem) and his friend who as a sort of revenge organises a speech in front of the philosophy class that specialises in humiliating christians. They have stumbled upon a paper written some 50 years before that claims to know when the world will end.
Featuring excellent acting and very well put together screenplay, End of the harvest will provoke thought in both christians and non-christians alike on how long this world is going to continue and when it will end. Very well done.
Thanks for reading.
Excellent.......2003-05-28
My Husband and I originally saw this program on television. We are both involved in Evangelism Explosion at our Church. This movie encourages us to all we can to bring in the Harvest before it is too late. It really hit home to us how important is to be prepared to give an account of what we believe and when the time comes to have the boldness to do so. Time is short and there is a lot to do.

Great DVD.......2005-11-13
The Pixies (Ben Stein) are hilarious in this dvd. The kids love it. The music is great and so is the story. It's better than full feature movies put out by the studios.
This Rocks Out Loud!.......2005-10-20
I loooooooove the songs in this, my favorite lyric in each of these. Well, starting with Kids Just Being Kids. "Kids just being Kids, close your eyes and count to three". It just adds to the actual fun of the song! Flappy's Song, well...I think it was the very end of it. I can't make out the words, they were singing all at the same time! Pixies Rap, another one! Oooh, "Adults Ruin Everything". Probably...when Timmy sings the last part "now it's kids who rule". 10 And In Charge, this is my favorite, favorite song in it and it would probably have to be when he sings "How can you be so dissapointed? This gets better by the hour. No worrries, no strife, baby, this is the life!" And suddenly....BOOM! Um...Jorgen's Song. It's not the lyrics, it's just that it's funny how he beats up Cosmo and Wanda, but he mostly bothers Binky. This is my sis's favorite, "Where Is The Fun?" my favorite part would have to be..."Where is the fun? Why should I trust you?" Or... "You were the one who wanted to shun everything I always thought fun". Um..."As Long As I'm Floating With You" probably..."I know that I am naggy, I know your naggy too. I know that I'm demanding...oh, man, is that true!" Cosmo made a great save, didn't he? That other song...it's very short but probably when Flappy sang something about that the arcade is closed early. Um..."Hey Flappy Bob, Can't You See What They've Done? (Reprise)" since it's a mix of all the songs except Jorgen's Song and As Long As I'm Floating With You, it'll have to be the finale part which is the Adults Ruin Everything melody or I'm 10 And In Charge melody, but I do like the part where Flappy and Timmy sing "Adults ruin everything, at least that's what I thought. You kids ruined everything, that's the lie I bought". Ok, the final one. Kids Just Being Kids (Reprise). Probably the ending part where Timmy and his friends stand with their families. That was adorable! I did my favorite parts during the song, and Christmas will never be the same once I hear these songs over and over again.
CORRECTION!.......2005-08-07
"It also had cool musical numbers like "Kids Just Being Kids," "Flappy's Song," "Adults Ruin Everything," "Timmy's Song," "The Pixie Rap," "Where Is The Fun?," "As Long As I'm Floating With You," "Unfun Parentals," "Let's Get Fun," and "Kids Just Being Kids Reprise."
Whoever wrote that review was wrong... well those are the songs, but not their correct names. And that might confuse some of you a bit! I'm sorry but I'm a HUGE Fairly Oddparents freak and if someone calls my two favorite songs by their wrong names I get mad. Here's an overview of all the songs (and there real names!)
Kids Just Being Kids-School's just out for the Summer and Timmy and his classmates are just being kids and destroying the town while having fun.
Flappy's Song-Flappy Bob, owner of Flappy Bob's peppy happy camp learn-a-torium is trying to convice the parents that for all their worries to end the kids should go there, so he can make money and have a kid free world.
Adults Ruin Everything-The pixies convince Timmy that adults are the cause to all his problems, and timmy tells us how everything bad is because of adults so he wishes kids could rule the world.
Pixies Rap-Just a song... really no point... explains how the pixies made a plan to take over fairy world by using flappy and timmy.
Timmy's Song-Timmy has become the president of kid world and he describes how he's going to make everything better by assigning jobs and having "candy for breakfast and ice cream for lunch!"
Jorgen's Polka-Jorgen Von Strangle tells Cosmo and Wanda about how shocked he was to see kids had all the power, and so now he has to take all the fairies away from the kisd since they're in no need of them.
Hey Flappy Bob-Here's the song I was upset about... it is not called "where is the fun?" as most people believe... it's called "Hey Flappy Bob" and it's the best song in the whole musical! Plus it's totally addictive. Timmy tries to convice Flappy that the Pixies are using him and that flappy needs to decide whether to trust timmy or the pixies to find what fun really is. "Who is the one? The one I can trust to tell me what's fun!?"
I'm Floating With You-Cosmo and Wanda's song about how Cosmo and Wanda met and got married etc. It also expresses how much they really love eachother. If you really want to know how they met, listen to Wanda's half of the song because Cosmo only talks about it for two lines then goes on to talk about how dumb he is.
Unfundamentals-Yet another mishap... its not called "Unfun Parentals" doi cuz the fairies don't really have parentals (except Cosmo.) It's an unfundamental meaning it is the opposite of fun. This song talks about how now that Flappy bob rules the world how everything is unfun and boring.
Hey Flappy Bob Reprise-This is pretty much every single song from the show (except Jorgen's song and the fairies songs) wrapped into one. It talks about how Flappy and Timmy are going to make everything fun again!
Kids Just Being Kids Reprise-Once the world is back to normal the kids have fun and become theirselves again. Too bad Flappy Bob's Learnatorium has now become Gary and Betty's Learnatorium. (you remember happy peppy gary and happy peppy betty?) Well Timmy wants to make the place fun so they end it with song!

Before their breakthrough successes with A Room with a View, Howards End, and The Remains of the Day, the Merchant-Ivory filmmaking team refined their literary adaptation skills with this 1984 drama, adapted from the classic novel by Henry James. Although the film can only begin to approximate the internal dialogues that make up much of James's fascinating fiction, it retains the central conflict of the post-Civil War drama, which takes place just as women are beginning their struggle for equality. The story involves a triangle of conflicting relationships, in which a repressed lesbian (Vanessa Redgrave) engages in a subtle, unspoken tug-of-war with a Southern lawyer (Christopher Reeve) for the affections of a young woman (Madeleine Potter) who is just coming into her own as a young suffragette. Although the film is slow and dry compared to Merchant-Ivory's later efforts, it's eminently respectable (as you might expect) and is highlighted by Redgrave's superb, Oscar-nominated performance as the story's feminist heroine. The supporting cast is equally impressive, and includes Jessica Tandy, Linda Hunt, Wallace Shawn, and Wesley Addy. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Merchant Ivory Productions, The Criterion Collection, and Home Vision Entertainment are proud to present The Merchant Ivory Collection
In Boston in the aftermath of the Civil War, Verena Tarrant (Madeleine Potter), a gifted young orator, has attracted the attention of Olive Chancellor (Vanessa Redgrave), who wishes to nurture Verena as an inspirational force for the Womens' Movement. But ranged against her is Basil Ransom (Christopher Reeve), a handsome male chauvinist, who wants Verena as his wife. Against a backdrop of luminous New England landscapes, battle is joined, and for Olive the struggle will prove an odyssey that forces her to acknowledge her true nature. Merchant Ivory Productions' acclaimed screen adaptation of the Henry James classic charts the struggle between two charismatic forces to gain control over the destiny of a spirited young woman.
Customer Reviews:
just another merchant-ivory movie.......2007-04-07
basically your basic merchant-ivory adaptation of yet another henry james novel. as usual, you get fine performances (christopher reeve, vanessa redgrave, nancy marchand, et al) in impressive sets imprisoned in a static screenplay and even more "leisurely" direction. i respect the merchant-ivory movies, but rarely (there ARE a few, like "remains of the day") enjoy them.
America is still battling...and again it's Boston brewing!.......2007-03-29
There is alot that does not readily meet the eye on just a one time viewing of this magnificently engaging adaptation of Henry James' novel.Merchant-Ivory has assembled an incredibly intelligent look at the American struggle for independence by focusing us back to "The Cradle of the Revolution"-Boston.It is 1875.The film commences with an organist thunderously improvising on the tune AMERICA:MY COUNTRY,'TIS OF THEE.A melodramatic stage has been set for us to view another American battle about to be waged;a war for women's rights as well as a knockdown-dragout fight between a triangle of players competing for rivaled affections as if for very life itself!.Verena is the seeming prize!Verena (Madeleine Potter) is a young and lovely innocent whose father has exploited her gifts of mesmerizing oratory.Verena has hardly ever been allowed to have an original thought of her own,and is prime fodder for the Suffragette Movement for women's rights.Olive (Vanessa Redgrave),a devout espouser for her sex, is overcome by Verena and strikes up a very clinging/domineering/teacher/ almost lover relationship with Verena in order to mold her into the speaker of the women's rights cause (something that Olive herself feels unqualified to do because of her looks and low image of self).Enter Basil (Christopher Reeves) who also is captivated by Verena, but not for her oratory, but for her desirability as a woman.Basil is a "Southern gentleman"who has definite ideas of a woman's role, definitely NOT in line with emancipation. These three duke it out with words, betrayals, emotional suicides ,yet all three end up winners,of sorts;Verena, finally choosing something for her own self, forsakes the movement and Olive which gives both Verena and Basil each other, but more importantly,Olive, when seemingly abandoned, rises to the ocassion, taking up the sword for the cause, and finds her own voice to speak for American women in bondage with just as much if not more passion than Verena ever could!.The film cleverly ends with the Revolutionary War tune BUNKER HILL as the credits roll. This song had been written to embolden the Colonials to fight even harder for their freedom after their defeat by the British. Thus, Olive will continue to fight for the ultimate prize of women's freedom despite losing the battle for Verena to Basil. GOOD STUFF!
An excellent companion film would be the PBS documentary NOT FOR OURSELVES ALONE:THE STORY OF ELIZABETH CADY STANTON & SUSAN B. ANTHONY.
Trouble in Boston.......2005-10-07
Based on Henry James's novel, this movie is a satirical look at the women's emancipation movement around the turn of the century in general, and how one woman (played by Vanessa Redgrave) keeps another (Madeleine Potter) locked away for her own purposes. Unfortunately, the movie does not focus in on this irony strongly enough. Where the movie should be crystal clear in its intentions, it is instead soft-focused and wishy-washy. In addition, Christopher Reeve plays a lawyer who also becomes interested in Potter, setting up a dramatic love triangle. There are some powerful scenes between Reeve and Redgrave, but not enough of them. The period detail is well presented, but that's not enough to keep us fully engaged.
"Will you be my friendly friend forever and ever?".......2004-08-18
Set in 1875, this Merchant-Ivory film focuses on the post-Civil War intellectual community of Boston and Cambridge, bringing to life the suffragist movement, which passionately involved many of its women. Verena Tarrant (Madeleine Potter) is a beautiful and charming young woman who draws large, paying crowds to hear her speak about "the just revolution," which would free women from their second class status. Though Verena describes herself as "only a girl, a simple American girl," her strength as a speaker quickly brings her to the attention of Olive Chancellor (Vanessa Redgrave), an older woman whose dedication to the movement, and eventually to Verena, is single-minded and all-consuming.
When Verena moves in with the overly protective Olive, Olive wants her to promise that she will never marry, but the inevitable happens. Basil Ransom (Christopher Reeve), Olive's cousin, arrives from the south, and is immediately smitten by Verena. Soon Verena must face the conflicts between her loyalties toward Olive and the movement, and her growing love for Basil.
The script by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, based on the novel by Henry James, brings the passionate commitment of the suffragists to life, and the direction by James Ivory shows the pervasive effects of the movement on both men and women, from Harvard students to elderly matriarchs and pioneering female doctors. The costumes, which were nominated for an Academy Award, and the settings in Boston's Back Bay drawing rooms and shore-side summer homes give a liveliness and reality to the period which James's own intricate, philosophical prose sometimes lacks. Supporting roles by Jessica Tandy, Linda Hunt, Wally Shawn, and Nancy Marchand add power and dramatic intrigue to the emotional tug-of-war for the soul of Verena.
Redgrave won an Academy Award nomination for her role as Olive, a woman whose need for the naive and somewhat simple Verena is overwhelming. Her fear of being left alone, her jealousy of the men who court Verena, and her desire to use Verena to advance her own suffragist message are beautifully acted. Madeleine Potter effectively conveys Verena's innocence, her almost child-like nature, and her growing awareness that she has some freedoms that she has never explored. Reeve, with his southern accent, is a bit difficult to understand at times, and his love scenes with Verena are wooden, lacking the spark which would have made them seem real. A fascinating period piece, the film lacks the philosophical depth of the novel but gains greatly in drama. Mary Whipple
NOT SO PRIM AND PROPER..........2002-07-10
This is a solid, Merchant-Ivory scr
