IN CONCERT (CARLTON,LARRY)
Customer Reviews:
Simply the best.......2006-08-12
It's quite hard to catch Larry Carlton on DVD as there is not much available. As a big jazz gutar fan, I wasn't disappointed. The stuff he plays is as relevant as it is today. Everything is excellent except for the terrible camera angles and superfluous video effects. Sometimes it gets difficult to see what his fingers are doing. Apart from that, I'm just glad I have a copy of this.
A bit dated.......2006-07-12
I'm a fan but this is very dated. Good playing but I wish he wouldn't sing and jump about. There is a lot better out there namely the Carlto n Lukather Band DVD... that's great.
It's Larry. What More Do You Want!.......2006-05-21
Being a guitar player and a drummer, I'll tell you that this Larry Carton concert is a dream. There arent't very many Larry Carlton DVDs out there. He should have made 20 or so. He would have made millions just on DVD sales alone. Although the audience in this DVD didn't know what they had or what they were witnessing, (History!) I would be jumping out of my seat evertime a song finished. The audience just clapped like they were watching a jam and had no idea. A vertuso at work and a once in a lifetime experience. I've sent Larry's webpage contact an e-mail asking for another video. Any video, just to see him play again these days. I don't really care if he has slowed down, changed music styles or whatever. I just wanted to see Larry play. The talent does not change and I'm sure it just get's better with time.
Great Performance, Annoying Production.......2003-04-12
As a long-time fan of Larry Carlton, I was really looking forward to seeing this DVD. I've seen Larry live a couple of times and he always delivers the goods - exceptional playing, terrific melodic compositions and a super band. This show is no exception, and it's interesting to see Larry play his first Valley Arts guitars, especially the Valley Arts 335 copy he's holding on the cover.
On the downside, I was severely annoyed by the unfortunate television trickery that afflicts this production. The director has apparently just discovered crossfades and, like someone with a new camcorder who overuses the zoom, forces them on viewers way too often. The result is a series of ill-conceived double exposures that make it hard to focus anything. Plus, shots often shift away from soloists just when you want to see what they're doing. All in all, a disappointing, intrusive and dated production style works to spoil what could be an engaging look at a monster player performing at the height of his powers.
Larry and his band at Ohne Filter 1984.......2003-02-17
This concert took place after a recording of the normal Ohne Filter Friday night "live" TV session...I was then the drummer in the Johnny Mars Band and we stayed in the studio to witness Larry and his band record this 1 hour long special....his fabulous music was made at the end of a month long tour in Europe and I am convinced that the music went right over the heads of the majority of the audience (recorded in Sudwestfunk Studio in Baden-Baden)as its jazz/rock theme was then, in 1984, something so energetic and different to German rock music...It so influenced me that I bought a Gibson 335...and I'm a drummer !! I hope the recording has Johnny Mars on it (playing harmonica) as he was as delighted as us to witness this great session.....I still have a tape copy from the playing of the session from 1984 on German TV......Enjoy !!
