The Neville Brothers & Friends - Tell It Like It Is

Editorial Review:
Amazon.com
Long one of New Orleans's best bands, the Neville Brothers are joined by a host of topnotch guests for some frequently inspired pairings on Tell It Like It Is, an hourlong show recorded in their hometown in 1989. Art, Charles, Cyril, and Aaron Neville are all terrific musicians (especially the angel-voiced Aaron, whose rendition of the classic title tune never fails to thrill). Add to that the presence of keyboard great Herbie Hancock as musical director, plus appearances by John Hiatt, Bonnie Raitt (who duets with Aaron's son Ivan Neville, then sticks around to back up the other guests, including Gregg Allman on "Midnight Rider"), Daniel Lanois, Jimmy Buffett, Buckwheat Zydeco, and the Dixie Cups, and you've got a pretty fine party going. It's not all scintillating; actor Dennis Quaid (whose golden locks recall his performance as Jerry Lee Lewis in Great Balls of Fire, filmed that same year) is fine but hardly on a par with the others, while Ed Bradley's mercifully brief turn at the mike proves that as a singer, he makes a great newsman. Still, there's enough here to more than satisfy fans of superior contemporary New Orleans music. --Sam Graham

One of the saddest times for Deadheads since the death of Jerry Garcia is New Year's Eve. The Dead's legendary performances in the Bay Area ushered in a couple of decades worth of new years, and even if you couldn't make it, it was comforting to know the band was carrying on the tradition. Well, that tradition is gone, but there's a video experience that comes pretty darn close--The Grateful Dead: Ticket to New Year's, taped on New Year's Eve 1987 at the Oakland Coliseum. It's a creatively photographed and extraordinarily performed concert film that ranks among the best Dead performances on video, packed with delightful surprises. Some of the best: a robust "Terrapin Station," a rare rendition of the stoner fave "Dark Star," and an unflinchingly bluesy "Knockin' on Heaven's Door." The effect of the whole performance is that of a bittersweet valentine to a way of life that may be gone but is still beloved. --Anne Hurley
Customer Reviews:
reat music ..horrible graphics.......2007-03-23
A great set by the Dead ruined by awful graphics that totally obscure the band, especially cut 18, intro to the Other One, and 19, The Other One. Some of the most complicated music on the DVD and the players are completely obliteratd by lousy graphics. Its almost as if someone assumed we wanted to see crappy graphics rather than top-notch playing. The music on the DVD is great, the graphics that obsucre the musicians suck.
just another newyears gig.......2006-07-10
the show is pretty standard newyears fair, with a decent set list. the transfer to dvd is adequate w/ some nice bonus tracks from the vhs release.
the real treat is the footage the band put together for the intermission. cooking w/ uncle jer is worth the price of the dvd alone.
Amazing Show! bopbopbop bopbop Not Fade Away.......2005-08-17
This was a great video. Everything is stellar, especially the Terrapin... only problem is, when terrapin is climaxing, they start doing the trippy effects...when i would have rather just seen the band as a whole at that point in the song...the band was psychadelic enough. The effects do work in some parts, especially the crazy flashes during Drums. There is a really good collaberation between Bill and Mickey during drums. The intermission antics are a treat too...it's all a treat (encore too with special guests)... just get it! Oh, one more gripe- I could barely hear Phil's bass well AT ALL on the vhs version...hopefully they fixed it up for the dvd version.
Slow Start.......2005-03-03
I am not a Grateful Dead fan, but I wanted to find out more about the band. This is my first Dead concert. For me the concert got off to a slow start. As it picked up I began to become enchanted with the performance. I have the VHS copy. The quality of audio and video on the VHS is fine.
According to Amazon about this...........2005-01-17
.....the Amazon description of this show mentions there being a redition of the "stoner fave" Dark Star. NOPE, that was not played at this show. If you're ever not sure about something Grateful Dead related, go to: http://www.deadbase.com/homebase.html
and you confirm a show's set list. Most Dead heads I suspect know this already.
I've never watched the dvd of this show, but was there. I'm going to have to side with the other reviewer who would like to put an end to GDP's use of the "cheesy video effects". However, seeing a sailboat on Jer's guitar would be pretty funny. I watched the closing of Winterland dvd, and it just goes to prove that the Grateful Dead, while being the greatest band to play live in the rock genre, were not a visual prowess (like the Who or the Stones), but those able to weave musical experiences that could take you to the stratosphere. To be at a Dead show, to be dancing and soaking it all in was an experience beyond description. This still exists with the present day renditions of the Dead to a lesser, but admirable degree. The year 1987 was a pivotal, yet great year in the band's history, and this was a very good show as I recall.

10,000 Black Men Named George.......2007-03-11
A very moving, truthful account of the horrid treatment of black men, in an era of Prejudsice and discrimination. When the governemnt 'freed' blacks, it wasn't true freedom, and treatment of them was horrid, as many people did not progress in their own ways, holding on to the whole 'you are beneath me' attitude. This should be shown in schools nationwide!!
An important story.......2006-10-18
This film covers the 12-year period from 1925-37, and all of the struggles that the African-American porters who worked for the George Pullman Railroad Company went through on their way to becoming successfully unionised. It seems so unthinkable and morally reprehensible that not so long ago in history, these hard-working men were allowed to be treated this way, like being beaten up, all called "George" instead of by their real names, ordered around, given tips for doing things like shining passengers' shoes or even barking like a dog, being at the white passengers' beck and call, being accused of stealing company property when it was the white passenger who had been attempting to steal the train's linens, and fired just because they'd dared to attend meetings about unionising. And because of the situation at the time, they couldn't protest, since making only $60 a month was still better than having no job.
When the movie starts, in 1925, American society is on the up-and-up, with unions, organised labor, and Socialism not exactly being very popular or approved-of causes, with a lot of hatred, mistrust, and fear directed towards them. Initially, Asa Philip Randolph meets with a lot of resistance when trying to even start a movement for organising the porters. However, he has the advantage of not being a porter and therefore being unable to be fired from that line of work, and he has such great organising skills and such persuasive and impassioned rhetoric that eventually even people who were initially against the idea come over to his side. Along the way the porters and their allies have to put up with things like spies, attempted intimidation by the white men running the Pullman corporation, firings, accusations of Bolshevism, criminal violence, and attempted bribery by the Pullman execs who want Randolph to step down and stop what he's doing. Even when things finally seem to be going their way when FDR is sworn in as president, with more sympathy for organised labor and the working-class, there are still obstacles put in their way by the white establishment, people who just can't grasp that this union is going to happen whether they like it or not, that there's much too much support for it for their old tactics of fear, intimidation, and random illegal unjustified firings to still succeed and go unprotested. They thought it would or could never happen, but it finally did.
This movie is a powerful and moving history lesson and should be required viewing for everyone, whatever their race. Though there's still a lot of racism in America today, at least it's not as awful or as institutionalised as it was back in the Twenties and Thirties. Thanks to people like A. Philip Randolph, Milton Webster, and Ashley Totten, today African-American laborers have a right to be paid more than just $60 a month, the right to speak up when they're mistreated by racists, and most of all the right to be treated like human beings instead of sub-humans all branded with the name George.
Excellent film that should be watched!!! .......2004-09-14
It's the 1920's and finding work is hard, but if you are a black man it's even worse. So if you happen to have a job as a Pullman on the trains, you work that job with pride, you don't complain, and you keep your mouth shut. It does not matter that you have your own name, it does not matter that you are seen as less then a man, it does not matter you have dirty shoes thrown at you to shine, you smile and you take it. But what happens when you finally realize enough is enough? What can you do, who do you turn to, how much are you willing to sacrifice to get what you truly deserve? Will you continue to stand for what you believe in, no matter how much others will dissuade you, or beat you down?
Those are the questions that will be asked while watching this film. I found this to be a poignant film. I don't have Showtime, and I had never heard of this film, and found a copy in the library. I enjoyed this film so much I plan to add this to my collection. The historical content alone is what kept me riveted to the screen, and you feel the pain of the men in this film. I mean to have your own name, but to be called "George" every day, and working for a meager $60 a month? The acting in this film is stellar. The only reason I'm not giving this film a 5 is because I felt it could have been a little longer. Andre Braugher is a great actor, and one who should receive more accolades. Mario Van Peebles does his best performance in this film especially. Mario is an excellent actor who needs to make better film choices. I have yet to see Charles Dutton in a bad film role. This is a movie you must see!!!
Must see.......2004-01-26
Excellent - should be a must see for all high school seniors and college freshmen. This movie showcases excellent African-American talent as they present the hardships and struggles of A. Phillip Randolph and the Pullman Porters in trying to establish a union. It is an almost forgotten part of our history that should be remembered.
Captivating!!!.......2003-06-04
A simple movie in a college, something other than the usual lecture, a few hours to relax during an early morning Saturday class... That's how this movie started; yet it opened my eyes, taught me some history and made me wonder where the strength of the "Georges" came from. Captivating, enjoyable and action packed, this story also teaches the viewer an important history lesson, as well as a lesson of life and freedom and our fellow man. Maybe the directing wasn't perfect - I don't remember. Maybe the actors weren't the best - I don't remember that either. But for what I walked away with - I give the movie: Five Stars!!!

Description
The wildly successful Red Hot + Blue project, featuring such world-class artists as U2, Annie Lennox, Tom Waits, and Sinead O'Connor, and such acclaimed directors as Wim Wenders, Alex Cox, and Jonathan Demme, is finally being released with the care that it deserves. Originally issued in 1990, the Red Hot + Blue: A Tribute To Cole Porter album created massive media attention for AIDS relief and became the first release in a 15-album series. An eclectic musical homage to the legendary songwriter Cole Porter, it went platinum, spent 24 weeks on the Billboard charts, and generated $3 million dollars for AIDS charities worldwide, but its companion piece, a VHS collection of music videos, was somewhat relegated to the shadows. That changes with the 2-disc Special Edition package of Red Hot + Blue, which contains all the music videos on a DVD and the album, complete with a much-needed remastering, on a CD, both in the same package.

No Problems here.......2007-03-08
I was skeptical when I read some of the reviews here. However when I viewed my copy, It was great, just as my original VHS tape. It is an important piece of work, even today. We should not forget until a cure has been found.
(UNFORTUNATELY) DATED AND (UNFORTUNATELY) STILL POIGNANT.......2006-05-20
You can learn a lot from watching the new DVD release of "Red, Hot and Blue." One is the importance of safe sex. Another is the uncanny resemblance between k.d. lang and Roddy Frame.
This 2-Disk collection (which contains the DVD, plus a CD with all of the music), which originally dates circa 1990, compiles some very interesting interpretations of Cole Porter songs as performed by a wide variety of artists. Because of his own sexuality, the choice of Porter's songs may distract from the important point that AIDS is not a `Gay' disease, but it also communicates the need for open-minded awareness and non-prejudicial intelligence, especially as it regards to a health issue of universal scope. While the artistry of these interpretations varies widely, the entertainment factor is fairly consistent. For example, Sinead O'Connor's version of "You Do Something to Me" is fair to middling, but if you ever wondered how attractive she would be if she grew out her hair, here's your answer. Erasure may not be one of my favorite artists, but their video and recording of "Too Damn Hot" is a coy highlight of the DVD. Iggy Pop's pairing with Debbie Harry is an absolute hoot, as is Jim Jarmusch's video for Tom Waits' version of "It's All Right with Me". Other highlights are Neneh Cherry's ultra-pithy recording of "I've Got You Under My Skin," and the ever-reliable Annie Lennox, whose video for "Every Time We Say Goodbye" may move you to tears. The world may have since forgotten about Jody Watley (a winner of the `Best New Artist' Grammy in 1990) and Lisa Stansfield, but they both provide excellent material for this project.
One interesting (and depressing) observation is how the politics and statistics presented during the course of the program have not aged at all, while the careers of a few of the performers have fared much worse. While the number of deaths in other than third-world countries has subsided, the number of people infected by AIDS has increased spookily in accordance with the predictions. Because of this shift, it feels as though our political focus on this disease has shifted as well. The media addressed AIDS with some regularity when American and/or European artists were among its highly visible victims. Today, hard economics decide who survives and who dies, with poor countries struggling to prevent the disease from ravaging their population. Proceeds from the sale of this collection benefit AIDS research and relief, so here's an opportunity to reminisce, be entertained, and provide assistance where it is most needed. A- Tom Ryan
Red Hot & Not Blue Tribute.......2006-05-10
I was glad I purchased this set. I think the imagining was abit soft but the picture quality did not lack at all. I did like the varied videos along with the CD mixture. There were a few stand outs U2, k.d. Lang, Salif Keita's, The Neville Brothers, Annie Lennox.
It was not a waste of time I thought but money well spent. I was not disappointed at all but with a slight imagining issue that is not overt to most eyes. The songs & text was a mixed bag that also was in the underlying issue of AIDS and I felt it did a good overall job and enjoyed them both. Recommended.
red hot + blue died and gone to heaven.......2006-05-07
it took them 15 years but it was about time that they did a clever mix of a dvd music video with the classic original extra songs included in with the cd and well worth the wait.
i found the quality excellent and liked the fact of the different styles of musicians and celebrities through the entire compilations to enhance in a blend of great interpretive songs/gems from the exceptionally talented songwriter cole porter.
the overall, i see was high in content and extras and for a good cause of course with excellent art form to boot. it's content talking about education, take precaution with history and current news on aids with people different takes with music videos. some examples were richard gere, john malkovich, debbie harry, annie lennox and others which also did brief clips with these people in between the music videos to break up the songs.
of course, the premise of this is for sales, music, help and awareness and i found the talks were not intrusive but brief and with interesting points from each person. i liked all the music videos but the ones that stood out the best to me were kd lang, sinaed o'connor, lisa stansfield, neneh cherry, annie lennox and the beautifully sung "do i love you" remix from aztec camera.
it's definately an interesting mix of sounds from various types of musical artists but i enjoyed the balance and think it was well worth the price for everything.
i would highly recommend it and found it a timeless treasure at home or on the road...
Buyer Beware.......2006-05-07
I had to have this. My VHS of "Red Hot and Blue" was pretty much worn out and I was thrilled to get this - at last! - on DVD. But Jezzy Christmas, was anyone watching this when the final masters were getting made? As everyone here has stated, the transfers are horrific. The images frequently grain out, colors wash out, and the aspect ratio clips the names of the performers off the early credits. Add that the closing credits inexplicably stop in the middle, and you realize that someone was seriously asleep at the wheel here.
And that masticates the massive one. There are heartbreaking great videos here (the two by k.d. lang and Annie Lennox still brought a tear to my eye), but they are lost in this incomprehensible mess of a reissue. Given the massive historical importance of this project (believe it or not, this was the first ever network television show to use the word 'condom' and was a watershed moment in raising awareness of AIDS and of Ronald Reagan's incompetent handling of the crisis) and the star power invloved, why the heck didn't anyone dig for better quality?
The three stars are for merely being able to get "Red Hot and Blue" back on the market again, and the CD mastering is terrific. But please, Shout Factory, go back for a re-do! Please!

Customer Reviews:
Very Disappointed.......2007-02-19
The only song I enjoyed was "Tell It Like It is". I did enjoy seeing Ed Bradley on stage. I still miss not seeing him on 60 Minutes.
The Neville Brothers & Friends - Tell It Like It Is.......2006-03-16
Xcellent DVD - Xcellent service from Amazon.
If you want me to love you, darlin' I will . . . .......2005-08-31
Bonnie Raitt plays slide guitar behind Greg Allman; Dennis Quaid makes women swoon; The Dixie Cups and Cyril sing Iko; and more.
Not sure about the sequencing, but this is how music should be.

Live Dead: The Grateful Dead in Concert is a great sampler of live performances from the latter third of the Grateful Dead's career. Like all Dead performances, there's a fair amount of chaff with the wheat, but among the three discs--Ticket to New Year's, View from the Vault, and Downhill from Here--fans will find many gems, as well as extra footage not available on VHS. Ticket to New Year's, taped on New Year's Eve 1987 at the Oakland Coliseum, is among the band's best filmed performances, featuring a robust "Terrapin Station," a (blessedly short) Space and Drums that segues sweetly into the stoner fave "Dark Star," and an unflinchingly bluesy "Knockin' on Heaven's Door," sung by Jerry Garcia with clear-eyed wistfulness. View from the Vault, taped July 8, 1990 (16 days before keyboardist Brent Mydland died of an overdose), in Pittsburgh, offers both great versions of Dead classics (including "Eyes of the World," "Let It Grow" and "He's Gone") and an intimate look at the dynamics that few could notice when attending a stadium show, including wonderful interplay between Garcia and Mydland. Downhill from Here, shot in the summer of 1989 at Alpine Valley Music Theater in East Troy, Wisconsin, features cheesy, unnecessary video effects. It is redeemed by Garcia's blistering guitar solos during "Deal" and "China Cat Sunflower/I Know You Rider," a spacey pairing of "Uncle John's Band" with "Playing in the Band," and the tender ballad "Standing on the Moon." --Dave McCoy and Anne Hurley

LIVE DEAD.......2006-07-11
THESE THREE CONCERTS ARE JUST SO GOOD. JERRY IS REALLY COOKIN' ON ALL THREE SHOWS. BRENT LOOKED SO HAPPY TO BE PLAYING, AND HE SOUNDED SO GOOD. PHIL AND BOBBY WERE REAALY ON TOO. THESE MUST BE IN ANYONES COLLECTION.
Not Their Best Effort.......2001-08-23
Well, This is the first dvd I bought for my first dvd machine. I excitedly read glowing reviews on this very site for the set. The View from the Vault is fantastic in both picture and sound quality; seriously top notch. The actual show is a different story. Weak versions of everything. It seems as if Jerry just didn't have it together that night. Downhill From Here provides a better effort from the boys, but inferior video (it looks blurry) and audio (not as crisp). Ticket to New Year's I owned on vhs and also features less video clarity, but has the best set list and by far the best actual 'playing' from the band. The 'extras' or special functions on the discs are negligible at best. As a true fan and show veteran, it's cool to own these to get a taste of the good ol' days, but not the audio/visual masterpiece you'd most like to have.
The Beauty of Alpine Valley.......2001-02-22
Deer Creek, Red Rocks, Shoreline are all were wonderful places to see the Dead but nothing captures the experience like spending 4-5 days at Alpine Valley. This DVD lets you appreciate how much the Dead enjoyed it also. Having been to this show, it brought back not just the music but the people and the environment it created. Putting 45,000 people in 37,000 seats without one incident shows you the spirit of the Dead. Bid you good night and standing on the moon are the most powerful in a wonderful show. The three DVD set is a great investment and keepsake. Enjoy!!!
7.5 Hours of Live Grateful Dead Concert Video.......2000-10-16
I had originally wanted the long-awaited release from the Grateful Dead Video Vault - View From the Vault. I was at the Louisville, KY show and the Pittsburgh show, and was interested in having View From the Vault on video. Then, I discovered the DVD boxed set that is known as Live Dead the Grateful Dead in Concert. What accompanies the 1990 Pittsburgh show are 2 previously released video gems, Downhill from Here (1989 Alpine Valley) and Ticket to New Years (1987 Oakland Coliseum). There is no better way to immediately amass a Grateful Dead concert video collection. The video quality is scary, it's like having 5th row seats at each show. Definately recommended to fans and those that wish they'd have seen the Dead live.
So you never saw the Dead (what was all the hype)..........2000-09-21
(For the non-fan) Okay, so you've never seen the Grateful Dead apart from the rather awful press from the media. So maybe a friend or relative played you a few tapes of live performances that still did not do it for you. So you wonder what all the hype is about. This collection will give you an idea. These live performances will show you that just a bunch of guys were better together than they were by themselves. The basic "whole is greater than the parts" idea. This collection showcases the band over an incredible three year period where the music was fresh and inventive, they were pouring all of their earnings (which were amazingly high) into an even better sound and light show, and they walked out on stage like any "Average Joe." Each show has those moments that we, as Deadheads, lived for. Actually, these shows have quite a bit of that magic. Watch the jams unfold that always eluded you on the tapes that my bretheren have played for you over the years. They band isn't exactly perfect, but when they shine, they shine....

pretty boring.......2007-05-04
Its not a bad made-for-tv movie, its just not very entertaining. Universal Soldier 2 continues with the Luc Devereaux character from the first Universal Soldier (then played by Van Damme, now Matt Battaglia). Also featured is Jeff Wincott, who has appeared in many terrific martial arts films.
Unfortunately the movie moves slow and is dragged out. There is rarely any action at all, and only one real fight near the end between Luc and another Universal Soldier. Wincott doesn't even have a fight in the movie - big dissapointment. The story was uninteresting, nothing more than the twisted masterminds in charge of the program luring back Luc, but he amazingly comes back to the good side on his own. Then its up to him, his girl, and his older brother Eric (Wincott) to put a stop to the guys in charge of the program, who are also ripping off another government for diamonds.
I guess I shouldn't have expected much from a tv made movie, but I expected something at least. Only good to add to the Universal Soldier, 4 movie collection.
Decent update of the man from the movie "Universal Solider".......2000-03-28
This made for TV made movie is a decent update of the man that VanDamma played in the original. It still deals with the man Luc Devereaux has from being a former Unisol. The Unisol program is tracking the former solider.Luc also has a lady friend who works for the media helping him. The action is decent (considering it's for TV ) Also in this movie is Gary Busey playing a commander of Universal Soliders. There are couple of plot of plot twists along the way so I wont give them away! This movie has non stop action, thrills and searing special effects! Its a fun movie even if you have not seen the original movies !
Other than a few bloopers, the movie was fantastic!.......1999-09-13
Luc, Veronica, and Eric (Luc's brother) star as fugitives either framed for murder (Veronica) or thought not to exist (Luc & Eric) battle to rescue themselves from the half Goverment, half mercary program of going to "Show & Tell", a scam to rip of another goverment of a lot of diamonds. Also looking for proof to prove Veronica's interest and to help Luc recover from memory loss. Universal Soldier II "Brothers In Arms" Summory
W-What is this supposed to be?!.......1999-09-08
One of my favorite pastimes is getting a stupid movie and sit around with some buddies and make fun of it. When I saw this I thought to myself- I marginally respect Burt Reynolds and Gary Busey. As the pedestrian story unfolded (some mishmash about the Unisols not obeying their commands and, like, shooting somebody or some other) we were so shocked that we couldn't even think of any wise cracks to scream at the TV. I mean this was bad, folks, just plain bad. Can anyone out there tell me about how this dreck came into being? Oh yeah tell me how it ends because I couldn't take it. Was there some kind of legal battle over the name or something? Clearly inferior to the same named theatrical release featuring Jean Claude. Van-Damme. Watch at own risk. I mean it.
exellant.......1999-08-29
Is it better than the first? well put it this way ,it is full of action but without van damme its just not the same.

Product Description
"Does it really work?" says Willa (Snow-white) as she watches Chief Tonka, the red-headed "Chief of the Pootiepows" mix his magic formula for the "elixir of life." "It can do lots of things," says the evasive Tonka, "If you believe it can." And so it does. Traveling with Tonka, and Billy, last of the dancing Buggs, and the mysterious Alfonzo, Willa learns to sell illusions too. But even as she learns to love her motley companions, she is moving toward the inevitable confrontation with her evil stepmother. Will her new-found friends be able to protect her? Certainly, in this Shakespeare-haunted fable, "things are not what they seem".
Customer Reviews:
Beguilingly Different.......2007-06-08
This is no mass-produced cartoon, but a lovingly crafted version of the classic tale. Tom Davenport knows his folklore, and translates the fairy-tale ideas well to a 20th century setting.
Set in about 1920, we have innocent young Willa at the hands of her stepmother, a once-famous stage actress. But the stepmother grows jealous of Willa's beauty and talent, and as she descends into insanity, demands Willa's death. Willa escapes and instead of joining up with a group of dwarves, meets a traveling medicine show, and later meets Prince Charming in the form of a would-be filmmaker. But the stepmother begins to suspect....
The film has its limitations; any low-budget independent project will. But the settings (filmed in rural Virginia) are lovely, and the cast (made up largely of Shakespearean performers from Washington DC) does a magnificent job.
This was the last (or one of the last) films in Davenport's series "From the Brothers Grimm," which set traditional folk and fairy tales in rural Appalachia, in settings varying from the colonial period to WWII. I've seen a few, and if they're any indicator then they're all worth watching.
This project is good for both children and adults; while sometimes dramatic and scary, it's never too tasteless for kids, and never too cutesy or cloying for adults. It's truly family entertainment.
The DVD also contains two fascinating short documentaries, one about a Virginia blues singer (directed by Davenport) and another about traveling medicine shows. It's a perfect entertainment and educational package.
