What started as a suggestion for Paul Simon to play a concert in New York's Central Park blossomed, on September 19, 1981, as a full-blown Simon and Garfunkel reunion after an 11-year hiatus, and now proves a priceless snapshot of two of America's greatest folk-rock performers. (It's also the rightful bookend to Simon and Garfunkel's acoustic Live from New York City, 1967.)
Performed with a who's-who of East Coast session aces before a record-setting crowd of half a million fans, The Concert in Central Park finds its stars just shy of their 40th birthdays and very much in their primes, their voices sweet and pure and their playing relaxed, perfectly in tune and in synch. The show features a mix of S&G and solo Simon tunes, including all the songs that appear on the CD, with the addition of a reprise of "Late in the Evening" and the first live performance of Simon's "The Late Great Johnny Ace." This is classic material from start to finish, 87 minutes of unmitigated beauty. --Michael Mikesell
Customer Reviews:
the concert to own!.......2007-06-08
This reunion concert with Simon and Garfunkel in Central Park, recorded in 1981, was historically, a very important event for many of their fans fortunate enough to be present for the performance, as well as the rest of us who caught it on PBS, as part of one of their more successful pledge drive efforts. Though, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel had split over artistic and [no doubt] personality differences, this concert really was the bridge made over their troubled waters, to reacquaint two old friends together through the music that had brought them so close in the past.
Even twenty-six years later, you can feel the real passion that these two men have for music, and for the best songs from their repertoire. Paul Simon penned many great hits, during his time spent recording with Garfunkel in their musical partnership. They include songs like "Bridge Over Troubled Water," their interpretation of the traditional folk ballad, "Scarborough Fair," "America," "Mrs. Robinson," "Wake Up Little Susie," and a slew of other tunes. Those two have a haunting quality to their performances that truly sounds like a throwback to the era of minstrels from the middle ages, yet, the arrangements fuse "old" together with "new," sustaining their fanbase that they acquired in the 1960s, as well as newer listeners drawn in by the more modern arrangements. You will truly enjoy this concert, and its a great recording that you could easily watch over again numerous times, without losing interest.

Simon & Garfunkel - Central Park.......2007-01-16
Looked like a great concert, but this duo was sadly let down by the sound men. Their voices were largely drowned out by the music and background noise.

Amazon.com essential video
The long-defunct, Southern California band regrouped for an album, an expensive tour (expensive for ticket buyers, that is), and this televised special, which features the Eagles in performance. Laid-back but sharp and even stirring during a longish acoustic set, the guys quickly get past the nostalgia element and sound truly viable. They even make it look easy: the sight of Joe Walsh wearing glasses and sitting in almost perfect repose as he effortlessly colors old hits "Tequila Sunrise" and new material such as "Learn to Be Still" may make you wonder why you ever stashed that guitar in the attic. But the band eventually gets off their stools and rocks out on "Hotel California" and other Eagles standards. All in all, it's an enjoyable and mellowing show. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
FANTASTIC SOUND AND PICTURE MAKE THIS A MUST HAVE!.......2007-07-08
I am a fan of the Eagles and never saw them live. This DVD looks and sounds great and the band plays and sings like the polished pros that they are. If I have one complaint it is the song selection. These guys have a lot of classic songs and they could have added a few more of the early classics for my taste. Other than that one complaint, this is a great music DVD to have in your collection.
And here's how it all started..........2007-07-03
This DVD has been rented from my local public library many times within my family so I finally decided to just go buy it!
This show is quite something especially when you consider it was made in '94. The Eagles were a solid group before and as Joe Walsh brings out, they still "show they can rock" on this DVD. There are multiple audio selections and the visuals are all very appropriate. The camera angles allow you to see much of the group throughout and you never really miss seeing the solos. That's something I particularly enjoy after seeing a lot of recorded shows where the camera switches to the drummer when the guitar player is noodling, or vica versa.
All around I give this DVD five stars because of how truly clean, entertaining, and even relaxing it is. If I were to relate the quality of this to any other DVD I own it would be to the Diana Krall: Live in Paris DVD.
Quality of Sound.......2007-05-31
Enough people have reviewed about the album and hence I will stick to the quality of sound. I brought this DVD as a reference DVD for my music setup comprising of Klipsch speakers, HK 635 amp linked using Monster THX cables/inter-connects mostly brought from Amazon. The quality of music listening to the DTS is amazing and really make you proud about your investment on hardware. As is being reviewed by hifi buffs, I almost started listening to each and every instruments separately and this is where the danger starts. Music is supposed to be listened to as one, when you have more and more expensive music systems, you will end up listening to some un-heard sound, missing the song. There should be a limit to the "separateness" needed for people who loves Music and I think I have almost crossed that limit with my set up.
The Eagles - Hell Freezes Over.......2007-05-07
One of the best concert videos of all time, wish I had been there!
One to own!.......2007-03-14
I'll keep it brief as the benefits of this now classic performance have been well stated in other reviews. All I can say is if you like the Eagles music you'll love this dvd. And.. if you have a decent audio set up, it'll blow your mind! Beware the 'Farewell Tour' dvd new release. It's not bad but you WILL be dissapointed by the sound especially and the performances after the 'Freezes Over' experience.

They step onto the stage of London's Royal Albert Hall: Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, and Eric Clapton. The capacity crowd, which includes Sean Penn and Jude Law, stands to greet them. Thirty-seven years after their farewell concert, the famously fiery Cream did the unthinkable--they reunited. This double-disc collection (and accompanying CD set) captures highlights from the historic four-day engagement, beginning with a buoyant "I'm So Glad" and ending with a triumphant "Sunshine of Your Love." It would be churlish to suggest that Cream appears exactly as they did in the 1960s (Bruce looks a little frail), but the legendary power trio still has the goods. Bruce is still the essence of soul (a particularly rich vocal on "Politician"), while Baker is as irrepressible as ever (a rare vocal on "Pressed Rat and Warthog," percussive tour-de-force "Toad"). Then there's Clapton, who remains as much a master of the guitar as of understatement. "Thanks for waiting all these years," he quips after a slow-burning "Outside Woman Blues," then adds, "We're going to do every song we know." The track listing is, indeed, generous, despite the absence of such Cream classics as "I Feel Free," "Strange Brew," and "Tales of Brave Ulysses." All told, there are 22 songs plus three alternate takes--and not a bad one in the bunch. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Description
In May of 2005 Cream returned to London's Royal Albert Hall-to the same stage where they had completed what was thought to be their final performance in 1968. It was one of the most eagerly anticipated, hard-to-get tickets in rock history. With the exception of a brief reunion set at their 1993 induction into the Rock and roll Hall of Fame, Cream had not played together in nearly four decades. This DVD documents Cream's momentous London shows. Performances from each of the four nights are featured and much more. Also included are alternate performances and interviews with Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce, and Eric Clapton. Cream formed in 1966 and disbanded in 1968. The band were a prolific and thrilling live act and toured incessantly in their short but remarkable history.Track Listings: I'm So Glad, Spoonful, Outside Woman Blues, Pressed Rat & Warthog, Sleepy Time Time, N.S.U., Badge, Politician, Sweet Wine, Rollin' & Tumblin', Stormy Monday, Deserted Cities of the Heart, Born Under a Bad Sign, We're Going Wrong, Crossroads, Sitting on Top of the World, White Room, Toad, Sunshine of Your Love, Spoonful (Alternate Takes), Sleepy Time Time (Alternate Takes), Badge (Alternate Takes), Sweet Wine (Alternate Takes), Rollin' & Tumblin', We're Going Wrong, White Room, Sunshine of Your Love
Customer Reviews:
Rock Stars are like pro athletes, they should retire by 45.......2007-06-25
I've read some of the delusional, worshipping comments of other's reviews here, and I just think they are all looking at Cream through Rose-tinted glasses. This put-back together band sounds slow, tentative, tired. Jack Bruce looks like they pulled him out of a nursing home to do this. Individually, they can still play, but their cohesion is slow- they are devoid of energy. Just go look at the other DVD, the one from the same place at the end of the 60s, and see the forcefull energy that band fired out there at the end of a comet-like three year run. The before-and-after contrast of 46 years is startling.
Cream's Triumphant Return.......2007-04-01
Crream's triumphant return is brilliantly filmed during their week in Albert Hall. The sound quality and photography is first rate, and the images are well-timed and skillfully directed.
The band itself is in top form and shows its musical age and experience brilliantly. Eric Clapton's guitar playing is as good as you will see or hear anywhere. Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker still are an exciting and stimulating rhythm section, and, in fact, Bruce does his famous duelling with Clapton on some of the numbers here. We see it especially in Sunshine of Your Love. Bruce and Clapton, despite their ages, still manage to sing their numbers with the same kind of verve as they did almost 40 years prior.
Of special interest here is the lack of gimmickry. There are no wah-wah pedals, for example, and no real distortion feedback effects. Stilll, the DVD has much to keep up the interest of the Cream fan who watches it.
No DVD of a live performance is perfect, and there are few but notable letdowns here. For instance, they include the witty but musically weak "Pressed Rat and Warthog" from the Wheels of Fire collection. The version of "Toad" here is rather long, and I'm not a fan of drawn-out drum solos, although Baker is amazingly energetic in this one.
Still, for any Cream fans out there, this is a fine DVD to have. You probably won't watch this just once!
THE TRIUMPHANT RETURN OF THE CREAM IN 2005........2007-03-06
As I stated on the last DVD review of "CREAM FAREWELL CONCERT," I will be doing a follow-up and add to my friend Metamorpho's excellent reviews of all of CREAM'S legendary albums. I already wrote the review on the legendary historic DVD concert "CREAM FAREWELL CONCERT" from 26 November 1968. I will now write a review on the recent 2-3-5-6, May 2005 historic reunion concert of CREAM live at The Royal Albert Hall in London, England. With these two reviews and Metamorpho's excellent CREAM reviews, this will finally complete the CREAM series on a good positive note and not the way CREAM tragically ended in November 1968. Again, this one's for you Metamorpho and for the MIGHTY CREAM.
I will be writing a review on the now legendary historic return DVD concert performance entitled "CREAM, ROYAL ALBERT HALL, LONDON, MAY 2-3-5-6, 2005" by one of Rock's greatest legendary bands and the greatest three-man band ever assembled. I give you one of England's pride and joy's, the one and only, THE MIGHTY C-R-E-A-M. This legendary historic DVD concert performance was originally released in 2005 on Compact Disc and DVD on the Reprise Records label in association with Rhino Records Entertainment which is a Time Warner Music Company. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary historic DVD concert performance or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible. And now, without further delay, it is now time for me to take you back in time to the accounts and events that would lead to the "CREAM REUNION CONCERT" from 2005.
CREAM will forever be remembered as being Rock's first true supergroup and for being the greatest three-man band in Rock n' Roll history. CREAM would forever change the sound of how the blending and mixture of Blues and Rock n' Roll would flow through the speakers and amplifiers. When CREAM performed their final farewell concert at The Royal Albert Hall in London on 26 November 1968, Rock n' Roll would suffer a major loss and be dealt with a devastating blow. Thirty-seven long years would go by with no reunions or performances due to the inactivity of CREAM. How about this, actually from 1968 to 1993, twenty-five long years would go by with no reunions or performances due to the inactivity of CREAM until their induction into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame in January 1993. CREAM would perform live on stage for the first time in twenty-five years. CREAM performed like they never broke up or left Rock n' Roll. In my opinion, this single 1993 performance would set the stage for the DVD concert I'm about to review for you now, twelve years later in the making. May I also add that I never thought in my wildest dreams, that I would ever be doing a review on the recent historic reunion concert by THE MIGHTY CREAM. From disbelief, I even had to see the concert on DVD for myself to make sure that it was CREAM. And sure enough, IT WAS. Seeing the concert, It was great seeing all three together on stage again. Eric looked great and Ginger looked very vibrantly healthy. Jack on the other hand, did not look very healthy at all. Please forgive me for saying this and I do not mean to offend anyone especially Jack, Ginger and Eric. I do not know if CREAM did this reunion for the money or not. In my opinion, I do not think money played a part in this reunion at all. I think that ONLY LOVE could have brought these three giants back together again. Which leads me to Jack. I think that Jack is terribly ill and sick. I think that it was Jack's dying wish and request to perform with the MIGHTY CREAM for one last time. When you see Jack performing on stage, he seems so terribly weak. He even has a stool on stage to sit on while still performing since he can barely stand up. I really truly hope that I'm wrong but if it is true, I praise Eric and Ginger for putting aside their differences especially between Jack and Ginger and perform as CREAM and bring back the magic one more time. It would also seem to me that with this historic reunion that an old Rock n' Roll warrior like Jack Bruce may have finally found some inner peace within himself and made peace with the other two members and a great legendary band called CREAM. The funny thing about this reunion concert is that CREAM would mark their triumphant return and perform at the very same place where they ended some thirty-seven years ago. In my opinion, this legendary historic concert is another true testament of the brilliance, greatness and genius of three extremely talented masterminds and a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary band that adds more fuel into the legend and legacy of the greatest three-man band that ever lived that was truly ahead of their time. And yes, THIS CONCERT DOES TRULY KICK A*S. A LATE NOTE: I would deeply like to thank my fellow reader and reviewer ...'s or "Saucerhead" for the new info on Jack Bruce. He is quoted as saying: "Jack Bruce was diagnosed with Liver Cancer in 2003 and in fact, had a liver transplant in that same year with near fatal post-operation rejection complications. This would definitely account for his unhealthy appearance in the 2005 CREAM reunion. According to WIKIPEDIA ORG, so far and hopefully, he has since recovered." I wish Jack Bruce well and pray and hope that he has made a full recovery.
Now it is time for their music to speak for itself and do all of the talking. CREAM would take the stage before a thunderous ovation. On DISC ONE, the concert begins with the same legendary Rocker that the band ended with in November 1968, "I'm So Glad," the slow blistering shorter version Blues classic "Spoonful," the breathtaking Blues Rocker "Outside Woman Blues," the first time ever performed live and sung by Ginger, "Pressed Rat And Warthog," the slow beautiful soothing Blues classic "Sleepy Time Time," the energetic Blues Rocker "N.S.U.," the late great George Harrison composition Blues Rocker "Badge," the slow haunting killer Blues classic "Politician," the slow turned fast paced Rocker "Sweet Wine," the train sounding harmonica filled speedy drums number "Rollin' And Tumblin'," the flooring slow Blues classic "Stormy Monday," the amazing and incredible Blues Rocker "Deserted Cities Of The Heart," the mindblowing slow Blues classic "Born Under A Bad Sign" and the sizzling Blues Rocker "We're Going Wrong." The alternate takes of the blistering Blues Rockers "Sleepy Time Time" and "We're Going Wrong" are excellent and could have replaced the chosen versions easily. END OF DISC ONE.
DISC TWO begins with the new blistering Robert Johnson Blues classic Rocker "Crossroads," the forever CREAM trademark Rocker "White Room," the return of Ginger Baker, the incredible "Toad" and concludes the concert with the forever CREAM trademark breakthrough heavy metal Rocker "Sunshine Of Your Love." The alternate take of "Sunshine Of Your Love" sounds about as good as the chosen version if not better. This disc also includes interviews with all three CREAM members and they talk about the events that led to the breakup in 1968 and the events that let up to their reunion concert in 2005. END OF DISC TWO. May I add that Eric Clapton played guitar with such raw energy and power that I have not heard from him in years. This concert is the best that I have ever seen Eric Clapton ever play. Eric Clapton must have found the fountain of youth because he KICKED A*S. Clapton was playing guitar incredibly well and was on fire. Ginger Baker played his drums like he also found the fountain of youth because he kicked a*s. Despite looking terribly ill and sitting on his stool for much of the time during the concert, Jack Bruce really dug deep down within his heart and delivered a blistering performance. Jack's bass playing and patterns were the breakthrough for all bass players and he proves it and shows why in this concert.
Overall, this is one hell of a concert worth seeking and checking out especially for the new beginners and curious ones that are new to the sound and music of the MIGHTY CREAM.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary historic DVD concert to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal DVD music concert collection. This legendary historic DVD concert has already proven to stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER. THIS CONCERT IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY IN THE MAKING, THIS IS ONE CONCERT THAT YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE WITHOUT.
In closing, CREAM has done the impossible. CREAM defied all the odds and came out of no where to bless us with their magic and presence in order to play and perform their own special blend of music one more time. With the extreme success of CREAM'S reunion concert at The Royal Albert Hall in London, England on 2-3-5-6 May 2005, concert promoters would get together and book CREAM here in the United States at New York's Madison Square Garden. Tickets would sell out immediately upon sale availability. I guess this shows that CREAM still lives and is still extremely popular to this very day. What now holds in store for CREAM? Only the future knows whats in store for CREAM and all of us and it will unfold before us all when it is appropriate. One thing that is certain is that CREAM'S contributions and accomplishments in Rock n' Roll and Blues are well secured and will never be forgotten. So here's to you Eric, Jack and Ginger. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. LONG LIVE THE CREAM. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.

There's A Mighty Wind a-blowin', along with the gales of laughter you'll get from Christopher Guest's third exercise in brilliant "mockumentary." After tackling small-town theatricals in Waiting for Guffman and obsessive dog-show contestants in Best in Show, Guest and his reliable stable of repertory players (including Fred Willard, Parker Posey, and Bob Balaban) apply their improvisational genius to a latter-day reunion of fictional '60s-era folk singers, a comedic goldmine that Guest first explored 30 years earlier on The National Lampoon Radio Hour. Collaborating with costar and cowriter Eugene Levy (who gives the film's funniest performance), Guest is so delicate in his satirical approach that the laughs aren't always obvious, and the subtlety can be as wistful (as in Catherine O'Hara's performance as Levy's auto-harpist partner) as it is hilarious. Some may wish for more blatant comedy, but that would compromise the genuine affection that Guest & Co. have for the music they're spoofing. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:
More pseudo-documentary than comedy, or more accurately, a mockumentary sans the mock........2007-06-05
You can count me in with the people who really liked this one, especially because it deviates from Christopher Guest's old formula. The way "Waiting for Guffman" skewered the pretensions of the residents of Blaine, and the way "Best in Show" skewered its dog owning protagonists certainly had a bit of poison in it. In this film, the audience can empathize at some of the characters while laughing at them, Mitch and Mickey being the best examples. I wanted to see more of them in this film. Now, I know that Guest has a burden in trying to squeeze in the Parker Poseys and crew, point taken. However, this film was about 80 minutes long. Mr. Guest, you are going to have to explain to me, why we see so little of our favorites in this film? This film could have easily incorporated another 30 minutes of running time. I feel this film might have taken a hit in the editing room and perhaps the DVD of it will alter my perception of how good it was. I think it's a big risk for Guest to take in a satire, and for the most part, it pays off.
I am not going to say that this film is bad or even disappointing; however, it was a departure. I missed the craziness of the other two films. This film is more of a serious attempt at the "mockumentary." In fact, we might want to remove the "mock" from it all together. The story centers on a folk festival being planned as a memorial for a great folk producer that has passed away. Of course, all but one of the three original bands being asked to perform has been split up for sometime. It is interesting watching them as they attempt to bring back a musical art form that has been dead a great while.
A couple of side notes: One aspect of this film that I loved was its realism, something missing from Hollywood these days. The Folks men dressed like ex-hippie Baby Boomers, right down to the Birkenstocks, and Fred Willard's office had all of the little knick-knacks that one sees in the offices of smarmy people like him. I think these little details make it easier for the audience to get into the film despite its obvious artifice.
This film will draw on the heart strings, where as the other two really were more interested in laughs. That is not to say that the first two Guest films did not have emotion, they did. It just seems this one has a little more. However, in the end, I feel this movie did pale in comparison to the other two. You can tell a good story and still be hysterically funny. Guest seemed to forget that here and decided to concentrate more on just one.
On Target Parody.......2007-02-27
A Mighty Wind is an on taget parody of folk music types. During the 1960's, folk music was a big fad. Now, outside of both NPR & PBS, folk music has pretty much disappeared from the popular music scene. Folk music has become relegated to only a pitiful remnant.
Part of the reason for this decline is the pecular demographics. Folk music is largely sung by Midwesterners, but its most loyal following is among Jews. Many of the best lines and scenes in A Mighty Wind zero in on this strange fact.
There are other funny matters addressed in A Mighty Wind such as the line, "the costumes are retro now, but they weren't retro then. They were nowtro."
A Mighty Wind is a great parody documentary aka mockumentary.
A Mighty Wind.......2007-02-19
If you lived through the 60's and 70's as an adult, you will find this DVD very funny since it is a parody of the music at that time, and the actors give such convincing performances that there is a laugh a minute.
More Christopher Guest Genius.......2007-01-25
Many of the actors from Christopher Guest's previous movies return for this mockumentary about folk singers/bands. As genius as the movie is, it's also fun to see the actors in new, contrasting roles from "Best in Show" (probably Guest's most mainstream movie).
Parker Posey, who was the freak-out Starbucks-loving He-needs-his-buzy-bee dog owner in "Best in Show" is now the sweet, innocent, way-too-happy Sissy Knox, a member of the New Main Street Singers.
Guest, himself, who was the nut-naming, backwoods, homey Harlan Pepper in "Best in Show" is now the upright bass-playing, super-deep-voice Harry Shearer, a member of The Folksmen.
And the list goes on and on and on.
As all the folk bands come together to perform in a reunion concert after the death of Irving Steinbloom, a folk music producer icon, the characters take shape and create the same brilliant comedy that Guest created with "Best in Show" and "Waiting for Guffman." But even as comedy reigns supreme, the singing scene with Mitch & Mickey, played by Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara, will get even the most hard-hearted person choked up.
A movie worth seeing and a DVD worth adding to any person's collection.
Pitch Perfect.......2006-12-20
The characters in this movie are all the people I grew up with and watched on PBS. Guest and Co. brilliantly but gently parody the sweetness and earnestness of their subjects. The songs - written by Michael McKean and his wife - are silly but sometimes truly wonderful; they're made more impressive by the fact that all of the performers sing and play their instruments live. Everyone is great in this film - Guest sending up Peter Yarrow from Peter Paul & Mary is a hoot - but Eugene Levy and Catherine O'Hara are a revelation as Mitch and Mickey. The scene where he wanders in with a single red rose for her floors me every time.

Description
"Right from the opening montage that juxtaposed scenes from the duo's careers and other world events, the message was clear-Simon & Garfunkel were sharing this show with their generation." (David Wild, Liner Notes) For an entire generation, the concert event of the new millennium was the 2003 Old Friends tour from Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. Their first national concert tour in two decades, performing songs that rank among the most memorable of the '60s, was a sold-out sensation in more ethan 30 cities across the country. Now many of those unforgettable performances are heard on the DVD Old Friends Live On Stage, as well as a 2-CD set and a Deluxe Edition with both the DVD and the CD's. The songs of Simon & Garfunkel have never sounded better.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing.......2007-04-28
This DVD concert is soooo good. It is a an awesome musical journey back in time allowing the listener to experience some of the best folk songs every written. The stage, song choice, lighting, sound, etc. resulted in a mesmerizing show. "Bridge over troubled Waters" gave me Goosebumps. Buy it and re-live songs you know through a great performance.
Great live for all region.......2007-02-01
I enjoyed this live a lot. Though I felt a little strange just after the beginning (probably mainly due to slow tempo of the songs), I found myself grooving as the show goes on!
Note that this is NOT the region 1 only disc. All region is supported.
Simon & Garfunkel Old Friends.......2007-01-07
When I go to or purchase a concert, I like the artists to sing their songs as they were recorded. That's the way I fell in love with the music. So when I watched this dvd, it wasn't impressed. The Central Park concert was better in my opinion because, in general, they stuck to the original style of the songs. The quality of the picture, along with the fact that they are much younger, is also better.
Old Friends or Central Park?.......2006-06-19
I own this DVD as well as the Concert in the Park DVD; I was also at both concerts -- each had a different feel, and each DVD has a different feel. Several reviewers have compared the two DVDs and, like most of them, I prefer the "Old Friends" DVD, which isn't to say that the Central Park concert is not worth owning.
The sound quality of Old Friends is superior, but that may be a function of the venue as well as of the updated recording technology -- at an outdoor concert, some of the sound is lost to the open air, while at a place like Madison Square Garden the sound is contained by the venue, and thus feels richer.
Though Simon & Garfunkel were backed up by a band in both concerts, the Central Park concert is more folky, with a peaceful outdoor concert feel (which is exactly what it was). The Old Friends concert, on the other hand, often seems to emphasize the rock aspect of "Folk Rock," which is a nice change from the Simon & Garfunkel sound I'm used to hearing. Its venue, better sound quality, and lighting effects, also give it more drama. On a flatscreen TV with excellent sound, the Old Friends concert provides the richer experience. My choice of which to watch, however, depends on my mood: I was at the Central Park concert the day before my first day of highschool, so if I'm feeling nostalgic I'll watch the Park concert; if I want more of an energetic, arena feel, I'll watch Old Friends.
As far as I remember, the only song they did at the Garden that was cut from the DVD was the Everly Brothers' "Let it Be Me." This isn't a big deal for me, though I'm sure some Everly Brothers fans aren't happy.
Other than this, there's little I can add to what's already been said about this DVD.
Words fail me!.......2006-05-26
These guys are awesome together. Someone should be writing new material and throwing it at Simon & Garfunkel to get them back together making music that we can all enjoy as much as their old stuff.
If there is anyone today who can play, sing, enjoy, perform, or compose music as good as this, I want to know who it is. Being from New Zealand, we don't get many opportunities to listen to music like this. I could have bought it here for NZ$40, but I saw it at Amazon for US$15 so ordered it without even a preview. Wow! It's 1:00am over her and I've just finished watching and listening the whole concert through, it was an absolute blast.
If good music makes you smile, sing along, and punch the air with joy, then you must have this DVD. I hope Simon & Garfunkel read this review and it encourages them to start afresh, because the world needs them to keep on!

I thoroughly enjoy this DVD!.......2007-05-22
This is a wonderful reunion DVD. The Guess Who sound better than ever, and are obviously loving every minute of it. Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman make this show (of course) - and it's well worth watching and owning.
Guess Who DVD review.......2007-05-12
This DVD is well made and a must for any Guess Who fan. The band still gets it done and really put on a great show for their fans. Great sound and good extra footage as well. All their great hits were done to perfection.
Variable volume ruins this DVD.......2007-04-07
Let me say, first off, that I've been a fan of this band since the late 60's. So I'm no "Guess Who fan come lately," by any means. Let me also say that this is a fine concert -- the band is really on, playing before friends and family during a violent thunderstorm in Winnipeg. The performance is great, and the production (meaning sound quality, in the sense of balance and clarity) is great, too.
So why only 2 stars? Because the volume of the DVD is variable, not constant, as if there were some sort of limiter in the processing. It's loud, then suddenly it's soft, then suddenly it's loud again, for no good reason. And this variability simply ruin the DVD. Since it's highly unlikely this is a manufacturing defect, I'm rather surprised no other reviewer has noticed. Really a shame, too -- if this problem were fixed, the DVD would a priceless addition to the library of any Guess Who fan. I can only speculate that a complete idiot was in charge of the final mix.
Guess I'll just have to stick with the VHS tape of the band's earlier Toronto reunion concert. And when will THAT fine concert be coming out on DVD, I wonder? We're waiting, fellas . . . !
Guess Who - Running Back Thru Canada.......2007-03-16
Unbelievable audio and excellent video! They sound as good as ever and it is one of the finest Music DVD's I have purchased. This is a Classic!
Great to Actually See the Guess Who.......2007-03-09
I have always enjoyed the music from Guess Who but never got to see them live. For that reason I bought their DVD. It fulfills that purpose. The video quality is OK but not up to recent DVD standards. Some great DVD concerts that excel in both audio and video quality are Santana's "Supernatural" and Peter Frampton's "Live In Detroit". Those are both excellent concerts. I have several others but I won't mention them all.
Burt Cummings voice has changed or his style has changed since most of his original early recordings. He doesn't have the deep powerful voice we are familiar with on the early recordings and he now puts a Axl Rose from Gun-n-Roses twang on the end of a lot of his words. I was hoping for more of what he sounded like years ago. I know people change and voices change as the years go by but I personally prefer his old sound.
It was still a good concert to watch and I'm glad I bought it. I probably won't play it many times but good to have in the collection.

Decades after the death of drummer John Bonham and, for all intents and purposes, the demise of the group, Led Zeppelin's popularity continues unabated--and why not, as long as they keep coming up with offerings as worthy as No Quarter: Jimmy Page & Robert Plant Unledded. Originally released on CD in 1994 and then in a remastered version simultaneously with this DVD, the 115-minute program (including bonus footage) was recorded on a London soundstage, in the hills of Snowdonia, Wales, and outdoors in Marrakech, Morocco. It finds guitarist Page, vocalist Plant, and an array of other musicians performing some new material, but for the most part, the repertoire focuses on their Led Zep legacy--not a surprise, considering that what they did together in that group was better than anything they've done separately, including some pretty good Plant solo efforts and Page's regrettable stint as a member of the Firm. Yet instead of simply parroting their Zeppelin period (and relying on tired warhorses like "Stairway to Heaven" and "Whole Lotta Love"), they've given the music new life, adding exotic instruments like the bodhran (an Irish drum) and the hurdy-gurdy (played by cranking a rosined wheel against a set of strings) to less familiar fare like "The Battle of Evermore" and "Gallow's Pole." Add to that three brilliant new songs performed with a quartet of Moroccan players, a full complement of strings from the London Metropolitan Orchestra (on "Since I've Been Loving You" and others), and a host of Egyptian percussion and strings on an epic version of "Kashmir" (also from the London session), and you've got a world music blend that is at times genuinely thrilling--especially for those with 5.1 Surround Sound capability. --Sam Graham

Customer Reviews:
THE TRIUMPHANT RETURN OF JIMMY PAGE & ROBERT PLANT.......2007-02-07
If you would like to read my full review of this historic concert, please refer to the original 1994 CD album entitled "NO QUARTER" JIMMY PAGE & ROBERT PLANT UNLEDDED.
In my opinion, this live concert DVD which was filmed and broadcasted by MTV in 1994 as part of the new Unledded series, is a true testament and a wonderful tribute to a great band that was truly ahead of its time.
Please note that I am partially reviewing the new 2004 DVD release for this pre-review which should be included with my 1994 CD album review.
Please note that this historic concert is a celebration of LED ZEPPELIN'S music and is not in any way a LED ZEPPELIN reunion.
When you see and listen to certain live concert footage sequences such as the songs "Thank You," "What Is And What Should Never Be," "Since I've Been Loving You," "Gallows Pole," "Four Sticks" and the blistering breathtaking "Kashmir," PAGE & PLANT take LED ZEPPELIN'S Rocker's to another level and add more to the LED ZEPPELIN legend.
Also on this DVD edition, you will get to see and hear new mellower Rockin' rendition versions of LED ZEPPELIN'S most sacred classic songs such as the beautiful "The Rain Song," "Nobody's Fault But Mine," the breathtaking "No Quarter," "The Battle Of Evermore," "That's The Way" and the new beautiful PAGE/PLANT composition entitled "Wonderful One" which was written and dedicated to Plant's late son Karac Plant who died of a deadly virus during LED ZEPPELIN'S 1977 World Tour.
Overall, this is one hell of a concert which helps PAGE & PLANT set the record that has been haunting them for so many years, straight once and for all. As we all well remember, the LED ZEPPELIN saga and legend ended tragically in 1980. If you're not familiar with what happened towards the end of LED ZEPPELIN'S career, please refer to my review of LED ZEPPELIN'S last recorded studio CD album "IN THROUGH THE OUT DOOR" released in 1979.
In my opinion, PAGE & PLANT were destined to reunite in order to change the bad note that ended LED ZEPPELIN'S glorious career and laid the band to rest permanently. This bad note was the result of the untimely death of John Henry "Bonzo" Bonham in September 1980. With this new PAGE & PLANT reunion band along with the recruitment comprising of Charlie Jones on bass and Michael Lee on drums, this new line-up has a more new fresh youthful look and has a lifeforce sound filled with raw power and energy that gives LED ZEPPELIN'S music a new sound not heard before. When you close your eyes, you can actually feel the spiritual presence of the late great John Bonham playing through Michael Lee's body and soul and transferring it to Lee's drum kit. With your eyes still closed, you also get the feeling that the spirit of LED ZEPPELIN is alive and performing one more time. I highly recommend that all of you, LED ZEPPELIN fan or not, to purchase this very special priceless gem. This DVD is Rock n' Roll history in the making and highlights the historic reunion of one of Rock's most beloved artists, MR. JIMMY PAGE & MR. ROBERT PLANT. So here's to you Jimmy & Robert. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my pre-review of my other original PAGE & PLANT review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. JIMMY PAGE & ROBERT PLANT RULES. R.I.P Mr. John Henry "Bonzo" Bonham. R.I.P. LED ZEPPELIN (1968-1980) Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.
Something for everyone!.......2007-01-05
I bought this for my grandson's friend (age 15) who is a huge Led Zep fan. He literally jumped for joy! We all sat down to watch it and I was as enthralled as he was. It's a great dvd...music, settings, singing...it's got it all.
awesome stuff.......2006-12-27
first off: why does everyone think this is Led Zeppelin? IT'S NOT! Perhaps the reason John Paul Jones wasn't asked to join in was due to the fact that his inclusion would cause world-wide hailings of a Led Zeppelin reunion, which this IS NOT. sure, having Jones along would not necessarily make this a performance of Led Zeppelin (that can never happen, Zeppelin is comprised solely of Page, Plant, Jones and Bonham, and nobody else), but the rabid attention of the press and fans would cause the whole thing to be misconstrued into something it wasn't. With that being said, this performance by PAGE & PLANT is superb.
Jimmy Page on xanax.......2006-11-07
Very disapointed. Couldn't even watch the whole thing. Led Z moves me, this tapes left me cold.
Sublime.......2006-11-03
Three places, three atmospheres, but only one powerful musical experience. Balanced and beautiful Moroccan and Indian elements interact with Jimmy Page's guitar and Robert Plant's voice in these incredible live performances of Led Zeppelin's best, and Page y Plant's beginnings.

With the Crowes it's about the music...as always.......2007-06-30
I laugh out loud when i read the reviews of anyone who says this sucks or it's not as good as it could have been. The Crowes put the music first! No big fanfare, no fireworks, no gimmicks! It could be said the Black Crowes are the opposite of Kiss. Both bands give you your moneys worth, but with the Crowes its the music. No spectacle, no posturing and best of all NO Pretense! This shows the band with their best line up at the top of their game. That being said, I would have prefered to watch the band during the extended jamms instead of them walking around town. Also, I would have liked to see a longer soundcheck...but those are small gripes because the rest of this DVD is just awesome classic rock done with a style and class most bands don't have a clue about. I've seen the Crowes live several times and with different members and I just have to say I'm totally impressed with this DVD...Crowes fans have been waiting a long time for this and we were not dissapointed...you can play this for your children(it's not angry or weird) and you could play it for you folks(they won't say 'what the hell is this?)...this is what music and watching music should be...REAL!
Good Crowes Performance.......2006-11-05
This one is pretty straight forward - the band comes out, plays their set and then good night. The song selection was representative of the best of the albums with Mark Ford on guitar with a few extras and some from the first album. They did em pretty much note for note with a little jam band stuff in the middle of some songs. I could have lived without the montage segments durning the jams. The back stage extras were OK but not really worth revisiting. A few with Kate Hudson hanging out with the band. This is a good overview of the Black Crowes and a solid performance. I don't regret the purchase and have watched it many times over by this point, as I am a big fan of their music.
Great live band captured........2006-09-25
The Black Crowes certainly never treaded any new territory, musically speaking...and they never claimed to. All they do is play great rock-n-roll, and they do it very well. This relatively inexpensive dvd captures them intimately. The sound is very good, and there are very few cheesy film effects in this dvd. What you get is a classic rock band performing their songs. No gimmicks. For $15 usd, you can't go wrong.
If you are a Black Crowes fan, you will love this!.......2006-07-27
I was at this concert and couldn't wait unitl this DVD came out. The Fillmore is such an awesome venue and the concert was one of the best Black Crowes concerts I've ever been to. The setlist is great and to see them up close doing there're thing is very cool. Lots of shots of San Francisco. This is a great music DVD. Highly recommended.
well i knew it.......2006-07-26
well i knew it. first off, I like to LISTEN to this band. but in a concert, borrrrringggggggg. not much going on here, all just jammed on a small stage, plugging along.
And Chris, how DOES these guys get the babes? I have a cousin that looks pretty close to him, greasy hair beard and all. and my cousin sings kinda of, not even as good, but still, he is a real nice guy. and his chicks? haha, looks nothing like Goldies daughter! oh wait, he is middle class wages, yea like that has nothing to do with it! hahaha.
but anyway, glad I bought the dvd, just to see, even tho I had a feeling it was going to be boring no action like this. better on dvd money than concert money! music is cool tho, jam it when its on the radio
Listened with Sennheiser 595's, the best that I have found, had 555 for a couple years they are nice too, but cant touch 595's, pay the dif and see, er I mean hear.

If you are a Toto fan, this live concert is a must have!
Still Sounding Great.......2007-03-20
When I first got this I wanted an HD DVD of a concert just to see if the audio was just as great as people said it was. So I popped 'er in and WOW, was I impressed. They still got it. When Bobby Kimball starts singing you know you are in for a ride.
The third song, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, is easily a new favorite. I found myself popping this in just for this one song alone. Watching Lukather rip it up on this track is exciting every time.
It looks awesome for the majority too, especially on the close ups. The only real problem with HD is that I it seems I'm always noticing when the camera goes out of focus. Not a big problem, but can get annoying when you are trying to focus on how amazing the detail is on their shirts or guitar straps.
Overall the sound is great and the visuals just pull you in and you feel like you are actually there. Definitley a must have for any serious Toto fan or anyone who likes good live music.

"Eclectic" is a description that's been overused to the point of cliché, but it certainly applies to Traffic, whose 1994 U.S. Tour is documented in The Last Great Traffic Jam. Here was a band, formed in the late '60s, who played psychedelic rock, melodic pop, and traditional folk, with occasional dashes of jazz and world music added to the mix, fronted by Steve Winwood, a preternaturally gifted musician whose inspired soul and R&B vocals earned him comparisons with Ray Charles. Co-founder Chris Wood died in 1983, but in his absence, Winwood and fellow original member Jim Capaldi (drums, vocals) put together a fine touring band, with Randall Bramblett (woodwinds, keyboards) a capable replacement for Wood and Rosko Gee (bass), Walfredo Reyes Jr. (drums, percussion), and Jim McEvoy (keyboards, guitar) filling out the lineup. Traffic lovers may be disappointed that the likes of "Paper Sun" and "Feelin' Alright" aren't on the set list, but the band's inspired versions of other classics, especially "40,000 Headmen," "John Barleycorn," "Glad," "The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys," and "Gimme Some Lovin'" (Winwood's hit with the Spencer Davis Group), reveal just how good this band was. The DVD (which included a bonus CD with three informal studio recordings) isn't perfect; there are too many distracting film effects for this reviewer's taste, and Jerry Garcia's guest appearance on "Dear Mr. Fantasy" is painful, as the Grateful Dead guitarist plays tentatively and looks generally lost and Brian Wilson-esque onstage (Garcia died the following year). Still, despite Winwood's various other incarnations (with Davis, with Blind Faith, and as a solo artist), his stint with Traffic yielded the best music of his career, and The Last Great Traffic Jam--which really is "the last," as Capaldi is now dead as well--is a must-have for the group's fans. --Sam Graham

The real last exit.......2007-05-19
This only gets a four star because of the fact that each format has it's own drawbacks and because of the songs played on this tour that didn't make the cut. I saw them a few times on this tour. At only a hundred minutes it would have been easy to throw in a couple of more songs from Far From Home as well as older tunes like Dream Gerrald and the cut off Freedom Rider. Also, I remember them playing a couple of songs from Fantasy Factory on this tour but not here. As far as Jerry Garcia, he wasn't in good shape on this tour so that's why his performance is below par. Aside from that, the DVD is great but I do wish there was more. By the way, I like the way behind the scenes footage was used as well as the crowd scenes and effects.
Great music, HORRIBLE STUPID effects/editing/etc.......2007-01-27
As much as I love Traffic's tunes, the IDIOTIC cutaway's, graphics, 60's psychedelic graphics, etc., etc., etc., almost completely detracts from concert footage. I totally agree with the other reviews that echo the same sentiment.
Geeeeeeez, I bought this DVD spur-of-the-moment and hoped to see a great band performing (heck Gerry Garcia on Low Spark was a nice touch !). I prefer to see a concert straight-up, not dumb crowd shots and other crud, who cares about that ? Arrrrrggghhhh.
Traffic Jams!.......2007-01-04
Like the tour I witnessed the year of this show, the boys still had it. A product worthy of inclusion in any serious rocker's library.
Best Traffic Jam I've Experienced.......2006-08-14
Had I read all the reviews before buying this DVD, I might have had pause for thought. Luckily Traffic has long been one of my favourite bands and I ordered it after reading only one or two reviews. And I have to agree with most of those comments - the visuals serve only to detract from what is the best Traffic music I own - and I have everything by Traffic.
However, I don't find it affects my enjoyment at all, except for the occasional thought it could be so much better. This remains one of my most-listened to and most-enjoyed DVDs. I do watch it with my finger constantly poised on the forward button on the remote for when the dialogue starts, but most times its so short and my reaction time so slow that its over before I can FF.
I also find myself asking, when I see only Steve Winwood and Jim Capaldi, what makes this really Traffic? Steve Winwood is clearly the major vision within the band, and I guess as long as he decides to call himself Traffic, its Traffic, because Jim Capaldi's influence seems negligible. Oddly, Steve's solo music is so bland.
I also find myself comparing this DVD most favourably to the like of Pink Floyd's recent offering, Pulse. There, I find the light show and cinemagraphics most disturbing, and in comparison what's happening in Traffic is at least contributing to the vitality of the music.
It's a pity there's actually so little Traffic music out there. I hear comments about another Video, and I hope that comes out in DVD one of these days.
The only low point for me is Dear Mr Fantasy. Although my first introduction to Traffic was Low Spark back in 1974, it was Dear Mr Fantasy that really grabbed me, and remains one of my favourite songs by them to this day. This version doesn't do it justice, which I really think only shines as a studio track. I've often wondered if I should make a greater effort to get familiar with Grateful Dead - I've tried a couple of times without success - but Jerry Garcia's lacklustre performance is enough to stop that particular impulse.
Oh, for MORE "TRAFFIC JAMS!" - This Deserves 10 Stars! .......2006-07-02
In '94, Steve Winwood evidentally felt the need (thank The Lord) to leave his synthesizers alone for awhile, and he hooked up with one other original Traffic member, drummer Jim Capaldi ("where was Dave Mason," one wonders, but I guess that's quibbling...). And I DO seem to remember an album, whoops, "CD," but no Winwood/Traffic/even Procol Harum enthusiasts I knew had or even heard it. No matter, Winwood and Capaldi subsequently decided to take the retro trip, and they recruited "When The Eagle Flies" bassist/extraordinare, Rosko Gee, a couple of (then) unknowns, Percussionist Walfredo Reyes Jr (...oh, man...Rebop must've looked down from On High and smiled, this Cat could WELL have been "channelling" Keith Moon or BJ Wilson - or MY favorite drummer, Alice DeBuhr of Fanny! - for all the grinning intensity he displayed!), and a brilliant Keyboardist/Guitarist, Mike McEvoy, who quite handily played any and all "Winwood" Guitar/Keyboard parts-to-the-note-perfectly when Stevie played "Lead." And I just can not wait to say this: the sound was - and IS, on the CD - PHENOMINAL! Tight as a tick, and the sheer joy they felt in performing was CONTAGIOUS! This time out though, Winwood used a Strat (except, of course, for "John Barleycorn"), but in truth, I much prefer the sound he got out of that wonderful old green Firebird on the "Traffic/Santa Monica" VHS-thing...but, yeah, that's another place and another time... And, no: I haven't forgotten: for the Sax/Flute/aux-Keyboard place left vacant by Chris Wood, Randall Bramblett, late of Sea Level (and incidentally, the..."close relative" of a creep that fired me from a gig sometime late "last century"), performed quite, QUITE admirably. Indeed, like the liner notes to the CD say, "Bramblett's work...pays homage to Wood but yet retains its own identity and special flavor." Couldn't've said it better myself. The material, though, is the JOY: "Pearly Queen," "Glad"(w/o "Freedom Rider" this time out, though), Capaldi's "Light Up Or Leave Me Alone," where he introduces all the band members - and where, for ONCE, all individual band members' little...solo spots are - well, TRANSCENDENT - not "masturbatory" as is usually the correct adjective applied to a "solo spots." Yes, they even do "Low Spark" quite wonderfully, too, and it's really kind of interesting to see/hear them switch off with Reyes playing the Jim Gordon/"Kit"-Drum part and Capaldi, the Rebop/Conga part. And the closing number, Winwood's "Gimme Some Lovin'," that he originally performed with the Spencer Davis Group is a sheer joy too...almost makes you forget that Belushi absolutely truncated it for "the Blues Brothers." However, in the interest of "sheer journalistic honesty" (dig THAT, Cameron Crowe!), I have to add a sad..."caveat," though: when Traffic tries to perform their signature "Dear Mr. Fantasy," for some inexplicable reason, they trot out some obese hippie that untimately turns out to be...Jerry Garcia. And Garcia tries, pathetically, to play a bottleneck-slide guitar part, but it's almost sad, knowing that he'd be taking a dirt bath within a year. Regardless: I honestly have not enjoyed a music DVD this much since I got my DVD copy of "Gimme Shelter." And until a DVD resurfaces of the original Duane/Gregg/Dicky/Berry/Jaimoe/Butch Allman Brothers, I DARE anyone to do better than THAT...
