Sinatra strides through the sold-out Madison Square Garden crowd with the confidence of a sports hero, accompanied by his handlers and bodyguards. If not for the gray hair and tuxedo, he could very well be--Howard Cosell's histrionic introductory rap sets the concert up as a world championship bout. While this 1974 concert does not capture Sinatra at his prime (at times his voice sounds weak and he chokes on a few high notes), his tone improves over the course of the set and his phrasing remains as seemingly effortless as ever. Accompanied by Woody Herman and his Thundering Herd, Sinatra delivers his usual mix of impeccably well-chosen standards ("All the Way," "The Lady Is a Tramp," "I've Got You Under My Skin"), signature tunes ("My Kind of Town," "My Way"), and even a pop standard he effectively makes his own: Stevie Wonder's "You Are the Sunshine of My Life." A sports arena is hardly the ideal setting for the Chairman of the Board--he's forced to shush the massive crowd before he can attempt the intimate "Angel Eyes"--but by the same token he has this keyed-up audience dancing in the aisles to his brassy rendition of "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown." --Sean Axmaker

FRANK JUST OUT OF 'RETIREMENT'.......2007-05-26
Frank was noticeably heavier and rougher in voice and this is the first look at the Frank we see until the late 'eighties' when he's lost about 2/5's of his voice. Here he's got the power and punch, less subtlety than before. Great version of 'Tramp'and a haunting, well-acted bar-room 'Angel Eyes.' I could lose 'Leroy Brown' and 'Sunshine of My Life" which were contemporary hits, but not worthy of Frank. More of an 'EVENT' than a memorable concert.
Frank Sinatra-The Main Event.......2007-02-11
This is probably Sinatra's best live performance on DVD. Recorded in 1974 it buzzes with excitement from his entrance down the aisle at Madison square Garden till the last moment. His selection during the concert was well balanced and his interaction with the crowd delightful. The only thing missing was "New York, New York" but he released it a tad too late for this airing-around 1979. Overall a great buy. One Sinatra fans will play over and over I feel sure.
Can't beat "old blue eyes".......2006-11-07
One of his best concerts on DVD. Great transfer to DVD.
AMAZING SINATRA!.......2006-08-22
THIS MAN GOT BETTER AS HE GOT OLDER. EVERYTIME I SEE HIM ON DVD OR HEARD HIM ON CD, HE GETS BETTER. MY NAME IS ANGELA AND I LOVE FRANK SINATRA. HE IS WONDERFUL ON MAIN EVENT. STILL THE SENSUAL AND SEXY MAN NO MATTER HOW OLD HE GETS. THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER! THIS IS THE MOST COMFORTABLE IVE EVER SEEN HIM WITH THE AUDIENCE AND THATS WHAT MAKES HIM SO APPEALING. HE DOESNT JUST SING HE HAS A PARTY WITH THE WHOLE AUDIENCE WHILE DOING THIS. HE WAS TRULY A MUSICAL GENIUS!! AND IVE GOT MOST OF HIS DVDS AND MAIN EVENT IS THE BEST ALTHOUGH I DO LOVE ROYAL HALL. ITS GREAT TOO!! WHEN IM FEELING STRESSED ALL I DO IS TURN ON ONE OF HIS CD OR DVDS, DRINK A LITTLE GLASS OF WINE AND HE MAKES YOU FEEL WONDERFUL!! HE MAKES ME FORGET EVERYTHING BAD. AND NO MATTER HOW I MAY NOT LIKE A CERTAIN SONG, IF SINATRA SINGS IT, I END UP LOVING. FOR EXAMPLE I ALWAYS HATED BAD BAD LEROY BROWN BUT WHEN I WATCHED HIM SING AND ALMOST ACT OUT THIS SONG, IT IS GREAT!! HIS MUSIC WILL NEVER GO OUT OF STYLE FOR ME!! HES THE GREATEST!! SO IF YOU EVER WANT TO FORGET ALL YOUR CARES GET THIS DVD OR ANY OF HIS MUSIC. AUTUMN IN NEW YORK IS WONDERFUL AND THE HOUSE I LIVE IN IS PHENOMENAL.
Appalling and sad...........2006-07-25
Sinatra, in his prime, was the greatest pop singer who ever lived. Unfortunately, this concert video illustrates Frank's decline all too vividly. His once-magnificent, "well-seasoned cello" of a voice simply sounds awful, and he looks like an over-the-hill saloon singer going through the motions. To add insult to injury, you have to listen to the execrable Howard Cosell bloviate for the first 10 minutes or so. Definitely NOT recommended. You want to discover Frank's greatness? Shut the idiot box off and listen to Sinatra Sings For Only the Lonely. Preferably on a dark, solitary night. His voice will make you weep.
