The videos on MTV20: Pop (one of the four DVDs compiled by MTV to celebrate the channel's 20th anniversary), at least the earlier ones, are technically primitive by today's standards. The songs are mostly forgettable, and many of the artists are already forgotten. But still... go ahead and try to watch these 15 tracks without tapping your feet or singing along. That's because as silly as some of this stuff is--and it doesn't get much more hokey or dated than the mechanical synth pop of Gary Numan's "Cars" (from 1980, predating the birth of MTV itself) or A Flock of Seagulls' "I Ran" (a hit for the big-hair New Wavers in 1982)--every song here has an irresistibly catchy chorus and, in many cases, a video that is at the very least fun to watch (plus DVD bonus features, including background info on the artists and a "Pop-Up Video"-style on-screen option).

That's not to say that MTV20: Pop lacks some quality material by significant artists, like Elvis Costello's "Everyday I Write the Book" (with an amusing video depicting Prince Charles and Princess Diana's domestic life) and Big Country's "In a Big Country" (an inspired, majestic anthem from '86). But who needs significant when you've got the Thompson Twins' "Hold Me Now," Naked Eyes' "Promises, Promises," and Chumbawamba's "Tubthumping"? Why look for deep meaning when you can party on with Lionel Richie's "All Night Long," Smash Mouth's "Walkin' on the Sun," and Aqua's "Barbie Girl"? File this one under Guilty Pleasures, and get ready to smile. --Sam Graham

Here's a surprise: Instead of celebrating its 20th anniversary by repackaging, say, the contrived spontaneity of The Real World or the "Party down, dude!" vapidity of Spring Break, MTV is marking this milestone with a boxed set of music videos--the channel's raison d'être in the first place, of course, but pretty much an afterthought in recent years. And an impressive undertaking it is, with more than 50 selections spread out over four DVDs. They're arranged chronologically on their respective discs, which are divided by category: "Rock" (with 16 videos ranging from Robert Palmer to Godsmack, it may be the most interesting of the lot), "Pop" (the most fun disc, with 15 largely trivial but irresistible tracks by Tears for Fears, Elvis Costello, and others), and "Jams" (the most wide-ranging disc of the set, with a 15-track mix of rap, hip-hop, soul, and R&B). The fourth DVD, entitled "Bonus Beats," is the only one not available separately; while it's the shortest of the four (28 minutes), it's also the coolest, with six superb tracks by Moby, the Chemical Brothers, and others covering techno, acid-house, and other electronic dance styles.

There will undoubtedly be disputes about these somewhat arbitrary choices, or complaints about some of the omissions (what, no Madonna or Michael Jackson?). But those are the very things that make MTV20 worthwhile; in eschewing the obvious, the compilers have put together a package that's consistently surprising and engaging. Bonus DVD features are limited (some background info on the artists, along with a "Pop-Up Video"-style on-screen option) but effective. And seeing those MTV animated logos, commercial bumpers and other promos again is a joy. --Sam Graham

3 out of 5 stars this is alright, not that good.......2005-08-22

when i first saw this dvd, my immediate reaction was, "wow, this is awesome." i brought it at some store (i can't remember) and went home to see it. some songs and videos were awesome and some just plainly stunk. the only ones i liked were, the counting crows, gary numan, madonna, lionel richie, and brian mcknight. mtv should have put more thought into choosing which videos had more of an impact. but then again mtv doesn't even play music videos anymore except for boring hillary duff and 50 cent. i guess this dvd was alright, nothing special.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT!!!.......2004-04-25

Actually, 3 of the 15 vids i didn't care for. BUT, the other 13 are PHENOMINAL. Due to your varying taste for talent and good music, I won't mention which 3 I prefer to pass when I play it.....you'd probably be surprised. To those of you Mtv fans too young to have heard of some of these gems, give em' a chance and get this great DVD. You might find it interesting to map what kind of Artist's started and continued Mtv's journey of popularity. Although i've seen it mentioned that Aqua - Barbie Girl is 90's, I saw it for the first time on this DVD and loved it!

Some years ago, i drifted from Mtv to VH1, and eventually drifted from VH1 to no longer desire cable....too much reality stuff and lack of talent it seems to me, but that's just my opinion. Are we being force-fed so-called talent these days? Who knows!

What I do know is whoever put together this great collection of videos is o.k. in my book. There are still 100's, may even thousands of videos from the 80's I still desire (maybe even some 90's) ... keep making them, the DVD's that is! I'd love to see on DVD with Mariah Carey and Fabolous "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" from the VH1 Vogue fashion award show. Mariah looks really HOT in that performance.

Wouldn't it be cool if we could just call the Mtv VIDEO VAULT at 800 number, or go to website, and compile own selection of vids to put on DVD and order it? If there were a thousand videos, i'd prolly want at least 500 of them. If 10 vids per DVD were the limit, I'd definitey purchase at least 50 DVD's. To name just a few, I'm still looking to purchase DVD's with Billy Idol, Info Society, Corey Hart, Steve Perry, Aretha Franklin, Bananarama, Culture Club, Dead Or Alive, Bronski Beat, etc....the list seems endless!!! But for now I guess I'm stuck purchasing sole-artist compilations (Duran Duran Greatest a great selection i might add).

3 out of 5 stars pleasant mix for pop lovers.......2002-03-22

Reasonable mix of hits from the past... sometimes a few songs are added to the confuse people.... i personally like 8 of the songs on this dvd...a few others are rated passable....
The sound quality is good on various tracks specially the British band Chumbawamba... Tubthumping...The great song with lyrics "whisky drink" brings back old memmories of pubs in England blasting this great oldie out... on a saturday night...
This dvd is ok if you like listen to a general mix of different sounds...

3 out of 5 stars MTV could have done better.......2001-09-20

Where are all of the great songs from Madonna, Prince, Micheal Jackson, and all of the other artists that dominated pop music in the 80s? Instead of them, we got videos from bands like A Flock of Seagulls and the Thompson Twins. I admit that most of the 80s videos on this DVD were enjoyable to watch, but I would like to see some of the superstars from the 80s on it!

The videos from the 90s were not very good. Why did they choose to put Chumbawumba on this DVD? The videos from the 90s were limited because they were from the late 90s.

3 out of 5 stars some good songs but still a mediocre package.......2001-08-30

Well, everyone has his/her own taste in music. Personally I like the 80's videos here (well, most of them; I always HATED "In A Big Country") but could do without all of the 90's stuff. I agree with the previous reviewers that MTV/Image should have put out one 80's volume and one for the 90's.
The real reason I give this collection only 3 stars, however, is the mediocre production value. The "extras" are very minimal. More importantly, though this disc boasts DD 5.1 sound, it's pretty difficult to tell that anything is coming from the surrounds OR center channel. It sounds like just a little reverb was put in those channels. I purchased this collection expecting to get remixes of some of the big hits of the 80's and instead I got something which sounds pretty much like the cd copies I already have. Perhaps I'm unlike many people, but I can't really WATCH the same video over and over, so the visuals are of secondary importance to me.
I know it is possible to create true 5.1 remixes at this price point: Sony did it for Sade and Cyndi Lauper dvd's, and Silverline is doing dvd-audio remixes of the Capitol/EMI catalog. Why the producers of this package chose to use 5.1 channels but utilized the surrounds and center so poorly is a mystery to me.

3 out of 5 stars A nice, if uneven, collection of videos........2001-08-17

Don't let my three star review fool you: I do like this DVD, it's just an odd collection. It has some classic 80's clips on it, which is the main reason why I bought it. But then, it goes from 1985 to one song from 1990, then a bunch from 1997! Very weird. I wish they would have done one for the 80's and another for the 90's. And the K-Ci & JoJo clip, while a nice song, seems very out of place on this package. My guess is that they tried to license some better stuff, but this is all they could get. The mastering is nice, as are the menus. Some good bio info on each band, although I did notice a few mistakes, which always drives me crazy! It's not hard to properly research this stuff, people! However, I'm still glad I bought it.

When it came to compiling videos to package together for MTV20, a celebration of the music channel's first 20 years, they could have easily settled for the obvious mega-platinum blockbusters or the videos that are as familiar as TV commercials (which, of course, is essentially what music videos are). But for the most part they didn't. Oh, there are some big names here, like Aerosmith ("Livin' on the Edge") and the Red Hot Chili Peppers ("Higher Ground"), and some of the videos will be plenty familiar, like Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love," with its array of deadpan fashion models. But MTV20: Rock also includes relative oddities like Cake's "Never There," Monster Magnet's "Space Lord," and Goldfinger's "Here in Your Bedroom." And since the disc's 16 videos are collected chronologically (beginning with "Addicted to Love" from 1986 and ending with Godsmack's "Voodoo" from '99), viewers can see how music videos have evolved over the years, as computer animation, digital technology, and other techniques have come together to create a significant art form.

The presentation is slick: Videos are separated by brief interviews, MTV logos, or commercial bumpers; DVD bonus features include the "Fast Facts and Short Stats" option that provides "Pop-Up Video"-style on-screen information, and profiles and discographies for every artist. In the end, of course, one's appreciation of this and the other MTV20 sets (there are also "Pop" and "Jams," which can be purchased separately; the "Bonus Beats" DVD is available only as part of the DVD boxed set) will depend on whether or not you like the music. But MTV at least deserves credit for taking a walk on the slightly wild side. --Sam Graham

2 out of 5 stars Proving Once Again that MTV has no ..........2002-09-14

The only reason this doesn't get just one star is because there are actually some good videos on this DVD. Now for the 2 stars ....

To the point: this DVD is censored. The audio is censored in the same places as on TV, as is the video. Why? It's a DVD for cryin' out loud!! It's not susceptible to the regulations of the communist FCC like TRL and all the other ... on TV. Instead of providing the so-called masses with a pure, untarnished DVD with uncut audio and video, they release this ... with the same lame editing as you'd find on eMpTyV. I know they have an MTV20 Jams DVD as well; it's probably just one long beep with completely blurred out video. God, how much ... are the masses gonna let MTV feed them until they get out of this brain-washed state and demand quality??

3 out of 5 stars Good Videos/Poor Sound.......2001-10-31

MTV is wise to release this type of material to the masses. This particular disk is an interesting mix of videos that plays well at partys or in a bar. In between the videos are some of the old MTV shorts that the cable channel showed years ago when MTV still mattered (i.e. the man on the moon with the MTV flag, etc). Also there are some brief interviews with the musicians that provide some interesting insight to the bands. For example, you'll hear how Godsmack got their name.

The video selection is a good mix, but I could have done without the lame Counting Crows, Goldfinger, Everclear and Blues Traveler. With the archives of video MTV has available, I'm surprised they settled for such watered down material. It is after all called MTV20 Rock! Kudos though for including Cake, Primus, Monster Magnet and Godsmack.

The sound however, is not good. The box claims it is in 5.1 but it sounds more like an AM radio station. After listening to a DVD with real sound, like Rammstein's "Live Aus Berlin" or The Eagles' "Hell Freezes Over" you will notice the drastic difference. I'm guessing this is because MTV went the cheap route for a rushed release.

If you want a good party disk or something to throw into the player as background, this is the perfect disk. The videos will be crowd pleasers. Just don't expect to put this one in and show off your stereo sound to your friends. I hope as MTV releases more of this type of product, they will improve the sound quality. This is a MUSIC disk so I believe quality sound should be a main concern.

4 out of 5 stars Rock Review.......2001-07-12

I always have liked how music sounds in Dolby Digital 5.1. My 1st generation DVD player came with a sample disc that contained a few music videos. When I heard that Image Entertainment was teaming up with MTV to produce a jam-packed set of some of the top videos of all time - I was very excited.

The only thing that I was really worried about was the quality of some of the videos - but rest assured, they all look pretty good.

There are some very big standouts on this disc. Counting Crows fans will love the quality of Round Here - it has never looked better.

The video is presented in full frame or letterbox depending on how the video was produced. Like I said, overall they all look pretty darn good. Of course the newer videos really shine on DVD.

The audio for the videos has been remixed in 5.1 - or so the box says. It’s actually mixed in 4.1 because no sound comes out of the center speaker. Basically the sound mostly comes out of the front left and right speakers and also out of the surrounds and sub channel. It took a few minutes to make sure my system wasn’t busted because you can tell no sound comes out of the center. But don’t let that stop you from getting these discs. They really do sound very good. A 2.0 track is also provided.

Extras include very short interviews before each video, short biographies, and some commercials. There is also a sort of 'Pop Up Video' selection that you can turn on where little tibits of info will appear while watching the videos.

Overall, this is a good mix of videos and pretty good quality wise. Highly recommended.

In celebration of its 20th anniversary, MTV has commissioned the release of three video compilations focusing on the genres of pop, rock, and "jams." The last collection features videos by many of the top-selling hip-hop and R&B artists of the '80s and '90s. There's something for nearly everybody, although the inclusion of at least one hard-edged/political hip-hop group or artist such as Public Enemy or Ice Cube would have provided a fuller picture of the times. Highlights include "Walk This Way," the groundbreaking collaboration between Run-DMC and Aerosmith; Eric B. and Rakim live in the Yo! MTV Raps studios with "Eric B. Is President"; Digital Underground's hilarious "Humpty Dance"; Canadian songstress Deborah Cox's romantic "Sentimental" (featuring Omar Epps from Love and Basketball); and Erykah Badu's lighthearted "On and On." There are plenty of others, although a longer running time--say, 90 minutes instead of 74--might have allowed room for even more female artists, such as Lauryn Hill, the five-time Grammy Award winner for her multiplatinum debut, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. The interview clips and original MTV commercial "bumpers" (station promotional announcements) between the videos will make you feel as if it's 1986 all over again. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

2 out of 5 stars JAMS ARE RAPPED!.......2002-03-22

everyone takes risks in life, think this dvd is one of mine...

3 out of 5 stars MTV should have had more videos.......2001-10-25

I really wanted to see old rap videos on this DVD. It would have been great to see videos by Heavy D, Big Daddy Kane, etc. Maybe MTV should have made two separate DVDs for rap and r&b. Both of them don't flow very well together in this DVD. The choice of the videos really makes the difference. They could have chosen a better video than the "Rebirth Of Slick".

4 out of 5 stars really cool dvd.......2001-06-14

This dvd is really cool since it has some of my favorite videos in digital quality. The behind the scenes stuff and the rest of the extras make the price a bargin. I will definitely get this when it is realesed officaly.
