PARIS CONCERT (CARLTON LUKATHER BAND)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-01-12

I am a guitarist, so it doesn't get much better than this! Larry Carlton with the always amazing and crazy "Luke". One of my favorite impressions is the look of admiration on Lukather's face as he watches Larry play. There is genuine camarederie, and there is nothing like watching 5 amazing players blow! This is what it is like to watch great players in a club setting. The DTS doesn't hurt either...I had to lower my subwoofer volume to about 5!
Listen to it loud and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars SSSSSmokin' guitars and a great band..........2006-07-25

Hey, I'm an old guitar player (61) and I really enjoyed both Carlton and Lukather jammin' their hearts out. I can see that they were both having a good time and were very loose--to say the least. THey come from different sides of the guitar world but, boy they both can play. I've been a Carlton fan for decades and this is the first time I have seen Luke play--yep I dig it. They both play from the heart and have a world of chops--that and a great band to support you, what else would you want? They give each other space to burn, and there's mutual respect here, no trying to "one up". Very enjoyable watching two world class players smokin' and having a lot of fun. To me this is another learning experience and I probably watched it 15 times the first week that I had it. I've been playing for almost 50 years and still love this stuff!

3 out of 5 stars Lukather Out-Classed.......2006-03-20

First of all, let me say that I am a big fan of both, Larry and Steve. I have a number of concerts from both guitarists on DVD/Video. That's why I went for this one , because I thought that it would be an AWESOME experience, hearing these two guys together. Unfortunately for me, it turned out to be a bit of a let-down. One could almost say, too much of a good thing overdone.

After the first tune, "Pump", Steve's incessant shredding and and nodling became annoying. For most of the time, it was like 'Every Man For himself', however Larry being the gentleman that he is, appeared to be almost restrained, letting Steve do his over-indulgent trip. But when it was Larry's turn, he always played brilliantly throughout, his solos well structured, great use of dynamics and technique always in the right places, never over-done. Larry showed (maybe not intentionally) that he's got class, while still being able to 'Rock Your Socks Off' with tons of chops to boot.

Jimi's song, "Red House" is probably the most abused Jam tune and I've not yet heard one guitar player do it justice. It's like, 'yeah put in a Hendrix tune and shred it to bits'. C'mon guys, if you must do this song, have a listen to at least ONE of the many versions done by Jimi before you even contemplate playing it. Then ask yourself, 'can I get that feeling, that intensity across as convincingly?'

In all fairness, the rest of the band are holding things together in spite of it all. There's some nice keyboard playing, plus solid back-up from the Bass player and Drummer. I mean, it's not a bad sounding DVD, in fact the sound is excellent, it's just a matter of mis-match in guitar players in this instance anyway. Steve should know better, he's been around long enough and he's done some fantastic work. But this is not one of his finest moments. If you want to hear him play really well, get the "Steve Lukather & Los Lobotomys In Concert". It is truly awesome and Steve is really in his element, playing great guitar, singing really well and his cover of a Jimi song (Freedom) is superb!

I rated this performance higher than I feel it deserves simply because I like the players, though not in this setting. Larry and Rit would have been a much better combination. By the way, if you want to hear some Really powerful guitar playing, with lots of energy, feeling and chops (but minus the pointless shredding), check out Joe Bonamassa!

4 out of 5 stars Nearly as good as the grammy winning CD.......2006-03-07

Wow - can these guys play. Lukather the "childish", noisy one, Carlton the "mentor" with lots of elegance. But please: Remember to buy the duo's Grammy Award winning CD "No substitutions" produced buy Steve Vai and Lukather. The CD is even better than the DVD. The song lists are about identical - and Carlton's solo after EXACTLY 8 min.s on the CD is just... FANTASTIC!!!

3 out of 5 stars Not their best.........2006-02-22

Not their best performance by far, but an must for fans of Lukather/Carlton. The Cd of this material is in quality of sound and performance in another league.

Toto may be past its prime as a multi-platinum recording band, but Live in Amsterdam offers abundant proof that their performances are as electrifying as ever. Recorded in Amsterdam's Heineken Music Hall on February 17, 2003, near the end of Toto's 25th anniversary world tour, this dynamic concert serves as a cheerful reminder that Toto have been alive and well and recording steadily since 1978. The band's 2002 release Through the Looking Glass was an album of covers, two of which are welcomed here: "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" is a prime showcase for guitarist Steve Lukather, and "Bodhisattva" is a tight, meticulous tribute to Toto's original drummer, the late Jeff Porcaro, and his classic sessions with Steely Dan. The mega-hits "Africa," "Rosanna," and "Hold the Line" are perfectly executed, and in a band full of talented singers, lead vocalist Bobby Kimball sounds better than ever. Two impressive medleys show the band in full gear as a comfortable unit of seasoned professionals, highlighted by impeccable work from keyboardist David Paich, bassist Mike Poracaro, and ace drummer Simon Phillips (who also produced and mixed this recording for DVD). And while 35 minutes of Porcaro's backstage home-video might seem frivolous, it shows a band that's still having fun, as reflected in the beaming smiles of their appreciative Amsterdam audience. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars TOTO Can Still Lay It Down!!!!.......2007-04-22

Just got this DVD and here are my impressions. Toto now includes quite a few more Lbs. (especially Paich!) and LOTS more hair dye but these boys can still play and sing their butts off. Bobby Kimball still has his vocal range....he hits a friggin' "F#" in English eyes...a note very few female singers can tap. Yeah...we ALL miss Jeff Porcaro's drumming but Simon Phillips is a stud drummer none-the-less. Mike Porcaro fills in nicely on bass where the fabuous David Hungate used to roam. I must say the audio on this DVD is top flight...I've watched it with 5.1 surround and with headphones on and it's probably the best audio production I've heard on a concert DVD. You would expect the Toto guys to make sure this was the case. Highlights are Africa, Rosanna (with a funky "little feat-esque" breakdown at the end), Hold The Line. The DVD extras are also hilarious...if a a little bit risque...having been on tour buses with fellow musicians this is what a typical band atmosphere is like to a "T".

buy this DVD and enjoy the sound,,,the musicianship and be convinced that "old guys RULE" !!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars If you love the original band you will love this concert !.......2007-03-30

I have loved Toto since their first musical adventures started.
I was luck enough to see them a few times before they split.
This reunion show is all I would ask for.

5 out of 5 stars Great Gift 4 Friends and Fans.......2007-01-11

This video is amazing, great band, great performance, great sound & video, perfect gift for friends & fans...

5 out of 5 stars Perfection is musicianship.......2006-08-14

I think it's somewhat comical that anyone could give this a subpar review. I've been a musician for 20 years and with that in mind, I have nothing but the utmost respect for this band. To the people who have tried to criticize this band, do you have any idea how difficult it is to become this proficient as a musical peformer individually, let alone as an entire band? Give me a break. Ask anyone with an iota of talent musically what they think of this band and these musicians and it should come as no shock that they will give nothing but high praise and due diligence where it belongs. This concert, the video footage, the audio recording, the overall band presence, all of it, is exceptional. If it's not your "thing", hey, I can understand that. Not everyone has taste. This is a classic and highly underated concert and band.

4 out of 5 stars Toto - 25th Anniversary.......2006-06-29

Toto at their best!!!! Dedication to Jeff Porcaro and George Harrison Awesome. Steve, David, Mike, Bobby, Mike and Simon hats off.

IN CONCERT (LUKATHER,STEVE)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Steve Lukather and Los Lobotomys in concert.......2006-11-05

Refreshing, really interesting to see Lukather with is side project. The band is great the drummer is Simon Phillips who is the actual drummer of Toto. Good quality recording. You will have your money worth.

5 out of 5 stars Steve Lukather WOW!.......2006-02-16

Awesome DVD with an unbelievable band! Buy this, you will not be dissappointed. Steve Lukather is one of the all time greatest musicians and Simon Phillips is a legendary drummer. Watch how these pros get through a very entertaining set list.

1 out of 5 stars Great musicianship, weak songs.......2005-04-24

I've played guitar for a long time and think Steve Lukather is an outstanding electric guitatist. The rest of the band are excellent musicians as well, but all of the songs, save for Hendrix' "Freedom", is little more than garden-variety blues/rock with some fusion and jazzy strains sprinkled into the mix.

The audio is tinny and the director makes an all too common error that has become pandemic in music perforance videos: directors who show the wrong guy on screen while another guy in the band is soloing. Such is the case on the tune, "Party in Simon's Pants", a showcase for drumming force Simon Phillips. While Philllips tears it up, we are shown just about everyone else in the band. Either the director had no clue, or the cameras were in the wrong position. Additionally, the video producers made the mistake of letting the audience stand right next to the stage, and this obstructs the camera's view, esp. of Lukather, the star of the show. Just plain dumb!

I read all the other folks' rave reviews of this DVD and I don't get it. Lukather has shown he can pen good songs, and just about all of the tunes here are tepid. The group really sparkles and percolates on Hendrix' "Freedom." Sorry, one great song is not worth purchasing this DVD. You can find the "Freedom" video track on the Ohne Filter compilation DVD...you get more diverse artists and the best tunes...get that instead.

The biggest challenge for musicians with great chops is finding the right vehicle to showcase their talents. The songs on this disk fail miserably in that regard.

Pass on this one...don't buy into the hype of the other reviews posted here. Save your money!

5 out of 5 stars Great performance!.......2003-09-02

I have been waiting for the release of a DVD with the Lobotomy's for quite some time. I have had the privilege of seeing them in concert a few times while in L.A. and to be able to pop this DVD in whenever I want and relive the experience is priceless. The production quality is less than stellar, but it's tolerable. If I had one wish, it would have been for a longer performance, but hey, I'll take what I can get. The performance is fabulous, and they even have a cardboard cut-out of Sammy Davis Jr. on stage for inspiration. Overall, a great DVD!

4 out of 5 stars Great performance... but one problem...........2003-03-07

... Luke and Simon are awsome together. This performance is mind blowing to watch and hear whether you're a musician or someone that likes anything fusion/rock/jazz. Personally, I bought it to be able to watch Simon Phillips who is (in my opinion) one of the most innovative and powerful drummers in the world and hasn't performed on many DVD's. In fact, outside of his instructional video, to my knowledge this is the only one.

The "Ohne Filter" productions that I've bought are all suprisingly good quality for TV productions. The audio is really good but is not as good as concerts that were digitally recorded originally for 5.1. That shouldn't be a surprise. But, they are recorded very well and the audio really rocks... you'll be very happy with the purchase. It's awsome.
