The Rhythm Nation Compilation gathers all seven, wildly popular and somewhat influential music videos based on songs from Janet Jackson's hit 1989 album, Rhythm Nation 1814. With a minimum of self-congratulatory distractions, the anthology gets down to business, rolling out such memorable productions as Swordfish director Dominic Sena's "Miss You Much," shot in black and white and underscoring Jackson's image as an accessible, normal young woman with a lot of playful friends. "Rhythm Nation," also helmed by Sena, is still disarming with its vaguely martial look and feel, as well as Jackson's then-trademark, staccato-choppy choreography. Other highlights include the south-of-the-border exotica of "Escapade," the long version of director Julien Temple's glossy "Alright" (featuring Cab Calloway, Cyd Charisse, and the Nicholas Brothers), and the dreamy "Love Will Never Do (Without You)," shot by famed photographer Herb Ritts and introducing the more womanly, sexier Jackson we know today. --Tom Keogh

IT DOES NOT LOOK LIKE DVD.......2006-03-20
The picture for this film is not clear. So if you are looking for quality, it is not going to be found in this film.
Happy birthday Janet!.......2005-05-17
Although recent outings have proven highly subpar in recent years, I still never can get enough of the high quality of the 1989 through 1990 videos of the videos from her magnum opus Rhythm Nation 1814. Entitled "The Rhythm Nation Compilation", this is a brilliant and groundshattering collection of seven of the most popular videos of all time on one DVD!
It's about time this came out too. The video version I had had worn out from so much watching but the DVD not only is superior in sound qualit, it's also benifited from a visual clean-up job and the images are much better and sharper too to give it a much more modern feel.
Call me strange by saying this but I found Janet to be worlds sexier in the "Miss You Much" and "Black Cat" videos than in recent ones like "All For You" and even "If". MYM is without a doubt probably my all time favorite video by any woman artist to this very day and includes the legendary chair-routine that has been copied numerous times in the 16 years since it was filmed.
Older fans will dig this DVD and younger fans need to get this to see a much different (and sadly once a much more mature Janet than now) Janet than they are familiar with.
janet at her creative peak.......2004-07-24
The Rhythm Nation era contains her best music and best music videos ever of her career and is a solid period for janet in my most humble opinion. The music, the memorable moves, the voice, the songwriting, the melodies and last but not least, the music videos sum up everything that represents the true janet, in addition to the humanitarian side of janet which is well represented on this DVD as well. Even if you already own the Design of a Decade DVD with has all the Rhythm Nation videos, on this compilation, Miss You Much features the chair sequence at the end, heavy d makes an appearance in the Alright video and Love Will Never Do Without You is in black and white in it's entirety.
good but..........2004-01-04
It was good but why did it have to be in black and white!!!!
Making the best with what you have!.......2003-12-31
Coming behind the coattails of legendary brothers, the youngest Jackson had to carve out her distinctive niche.
And, man, did "Miss Jackson" do just that. Saddled with two of the hottest producers in the business, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Jackson released the landmark album "Rhythm Nation 1814" in 1989 and the critics and the public went wild. The platinum-selling album spawned no less than seven hit singles, all with accompanying videos that only added to their success.
This video compilation is the perfect "trip down memory lane" as Jackson and her superb troupe of dancers prance, shimmy, grind, and cavort to the title cut, "Miss You Much", "Love Will Never Do (Without You)", "Alright" (with guest performances from Cyd Charisse, the Nicholas Brothers, Cab Calloway, and Heavy D), "Escapade" with its carnival influences", "Black Cat", "Lonely", and "Come Back to Me" with its Parisian background.
Top-notch direction from Dominec Sena, Peter Smillie, Julian Temple, Wayne Isham and the late Herb Ritts allowed the singer to shine as only she could in each mini-spectacle.
