ANTHOLOGY (DEEP PURPLE)
Customer Reviews:
Amazing rare versions of Mandrake Root and Wring That Neck.......2005-05-06
As the other reviewers explained, Deep Purple Rock Review 1970-72 has 3 parts: 1) Granada 70, 2) Live in Denmark 72, 3) Unknown source live probably 1970. Granada has 2 songs. Outstanding quality. Probably the best live video/audio Deep Purple that is available from Mark II (you can purchase the entire Granada set in the Masters from the Vault DVD). Denmark has 4 songs. The quality is not as good as the Granada nor as explosive but I thought it was still very good. Video is more b/w and sound not as clear as Granada. Unknown source live 1970 is the hidden gem of this DVD. To put it bluntly, it blew me away! Wow. While watching it, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Extremely rare video footage 35 years old. The performances of Mandrake Root and Wring that Neck must be seen to be believed. This is what I've been waiting to see for such a long time. Sure, the video isn't the clearest you'll ever see, but the sound is amazing. Blackmore and Lord totally dominate. There is one camera that follows the various members of Purple around the stage. The audience is right on Purple enjoying what they are hearing. This incarnation of Purple was in its infancy and I'm sure that the audience were shocked at seeing and hearing what they experienced that night. I can only wish that I was there with them. I cannot over emphasize how excited I was watching it. In conclusion, I give the Granada video 4.5 stars, Denmark video 3.5, and the Unknown source video 4.5. Obviously, this DVD was made by the same people who made the Insider DVD's of various rock bands. Like them, there is commentary by various critics, etc. However, this DVD concentrates on Purple, showing complete songs, and keeping commentary between songs. Buy this if you love Purple, Rainbow, Blackmore, Lord, Gillan, Glover or Paice.
Mixed Bag.......2005-04-02
This is a disc that is best suited for the die-hard Purple fan .It features segments of 3 different shows ,2 of which are available in superior quality versions.First we have "Speed King" & "Child in time" also found on the "Masters from the vaults " DVD far better. Then we have full versions of "Mandrake Root" & "Wring that neck" from an unknown Tv broadcast obviously from 1970 as well ,these are of low quality ,being very dark and very weak in the color ,also having some artifacts in the print .Nevertheless for a real Purple fanatic these may prove very entertaining, but the casual fan is advised to look elsewhere for an example of Classic Deep Purple. The third show is from the Denmark 72 show ,available on DVD as "Machine Head Live" again in much superior condition to that presented here. There is also some commentary from Musicians and Critics which they did generally keep to between songs.
Don't buy this DVD!!!.......2005-03-10
Don't waste your money on this DVD!!! The pic and sound quality is very very poor. Only 2 songs are watchable (speed king and child in time). The rest of the songs are wasting time. Don't get me wrong, I am a die hard deep purple fan. But I don't understand why they produce such a low quality dvd.
Purple in its Prime.......2004-11-28
To me, Deep Purple's finest studio and concert performances were achieved around the time "In Rock" and "Fireball" were recorded (1970-71). Indeed, it is my opinion that at that time the band played with a creativity and intensity unmatched by anything it produced before or since. That's why I was thrilled to discover this DVD, which represents some of the band's best live performances from that period. The collection includes performances in Granada (1970) and Denmark (1972). On the DVD, the Granada concert, which includes the songs "Speed King," "Mandrake Root," "Wring That Neck," and "Child In Time," is far superior to the Denmark concert. The picture and sound quality are top notch, and the performance is outstanding. I was particularly impressed by Ritchie's playing on Mandrake Root, which displays his wild, orgiastic virtuosity in all its glory. The Denmark concert includes the songs "Fireball," "Strange Kind Of Woman," "Highway Star," and "Lazy." On the DVD, this performance pales in comparison to the concert in Granada. The picture quality is poor (it looks more black and white than color), the sound is poorly mixed, and the performance doesn't match the intensity of the Granada concert. On the whole, however, I thoroughly enjoyed the DVD. It affords Purple fans with a glimpse of the band when it was at its best, and the commentary by various musicians and critics is a plus.
Blackmore (and Lord) shine in some VERY obscure footage!!!!.......2004-10-28
I purchased this dvd with much trepidation, smelling a rip-off repackage. Still, being a die-hard Deep Purple/ Rainbow/ Blackmore's Night fan, I reluctantly bought it in the hopes it would have something new to offer. All I can say is WOW!!!!! While the versions of "Speed King" & "Child In Time" are from "Masters From The Vaults", in addition to 4 songs form the now OUT-OF-PRINT Brazilian import dvd "Machine Head '72: Live in Scandinavia" ("Fireball", "Strange Kind of Woman", "Highway Star", & "Lazy"), the FULL-LENGTH versions of "Mandrake Root" (with vocals) and "Wring That Neck" are brand new to dvd or maybe even human eyes since 1970, as far as I know! Lord shines on "Mandrake Root", while Ritchie and the guys do the Rondo rhythm and some cool fills and noises throughout. HOwever, the tour-de-force is "Wring That Neck"---quite simply, THE most amazing Blackmore footage on dvd to date! Wickedly fast, jazzy, classical...you name it. All the 1970 clips, save "Speed King", feature Ritchie's old beloved Gibson guitar. In addition, some nice commentary in between (NOT during) the tracks by Rainbow's Doogie White, as well as Neil Murray, the current Procuil Harum guitarist, and several others. BUY THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
