5 out of 5 stars Better is not possible!.......2006-08-01

My grandfather saw this exceptional happening in real life. It's great to see the old members of the KCO back. And the greatest thing is the way of conducting. Marvelous! But why is this DVD so much cheaper in Europe???

5 out of 5 stars Great 4th and Kleiber's best Beethoven 7th........2006-02-08

This is a very long waited DVD by all those who knew the Laser Disc with this same performances filmed live in the Dutch Concertgebouw in the `80s.

First of all we have to mention the very close relation that exist between Carlos Kleiber and Beethoven's world, specially with the Seventh Symphony he have conducted lot of times. We knew his audio recording with the Wiener Philharmoniker for Deutsche Grammophon, one of the most interesting I know, but not really so good like this, much more fresh and well done. Of course, the Wiener is an orchestra I like a little more than the Concertgebouworkest, but the Dutch one is good enough to play a fantastic concert like this, in which is easy to see everything was deeply rehearsed and prepared before going to the stage. Sometimes Kleiber even is `dancing' with the orchestra and enjoining the results of all the previous work. The tempi are fresh and light, pure Kleiber style and the sound is, like everybody use to describe, `electrifying', very passionate. Wagner said this Beethoven's Seventh is the `apotheosis of the dance' and we can say Kleiber really does it, dancing even himself with his body and swinging his baton. Probably my favourite Seventh together with very good one of Szell & Cleveland (Sony).

Sound is quite good, not excellent but good enough to be an `80s recording by Philips. You will need to rise the volume quite high but the clearness, balance and definition is good. The image is very good to, joining shots of Kleiber, the orchestra and the Concertgebouw hall, a really fantastic place in which public, enthusiastic, embrace the orchestra.

The orchestra is the smooth and very technical Concertgebouworkest, not always very fine in Beethoven (perfect in Mahler and other repertoires, even form the XXth Century Music), but with a great day here, what a woodwinds!

The Fourth is quite good too, but not so great like the Seventh. In this Fourth Symphony I really prefer Bernstein's performance with the Wiener Philharmoniker (DG).

If I'm realistic, the media of the performances would be 4 and some decimals, but as we are watching a wonderful piece of history and listening a wonderful player, it will be five.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Electric performances with very fast allegros from 1983.......2005-08-16

These are excellent performances, but they are electric with very fast allegro movements. Not all listeners will respond well to them: fans of Furtwangler, Bohm, and Bruno Walter in these symphonies may not like Kleiber, considering him too glib, and that he misses/glosses over important points. But the precision of the Concertgebouw Orchestra players is thrilling!

Sound quality and picture quality are both excellent. DVD picture is full screen, and has great perspectives/shots of Kleiber in dramatic moments or of a flute, clarinet, oboe, etc. player when they have a solo lick/passage.

The Concertgebouw Orchestra plays better for Kleiber in Symphony 4 here than the Bavarian State Orchestra (also a live recording) did in 1982 (Orfeo CD). Kleiber's 7th here is superior to his Vienna Philharmonic studio recording from 1976(DG CD): I and IV sparkle more here. The intensity and excitement of playing in front of a live audience helps. The audience clearly loved Kleiber, and it shows.

5 out of 5 stars Carlos Kleiber Will Live Forever.......2005-08-02

Thanks to documents like this, Carlos Kleiber's incomparable art will live on into the future and/or as long as great music itself lives on. --Years ago, this pairing on VHS was my introduction to Carlos Kleiber "live." Over time, the tape stretched a bit, and both sound and picture suffered in those spots. The digital processing on the DVD for both audio and video is world-class, and now these performances virtually jump off the screen into your lap! What a loss this man's self-imposed retirement was to music lovers the world over. And, with his death in July 2004, he's truly lost to the world for all time.
I'm saving up to get the rest of Kleiber's "new" DGG DVDs while I still can.

5 out of 5 stars ... Hear and Watch the Music Take Shape.......2005-04-02

I had the luck to see and record this concert being broadcast on PBS many years ago. For years I searched and hoped to find the DVD of this magnificent concert and my wish has finally been fulfilled. Oscar Levant unfairly described Bernstein's conducting as:"He uses music as an accompaniment to his conducting". Similarly while Kleiber's subtly coreographed movements, facial and body gestures keeps the Concergebow players at the edges of their seats, he makes Beethoven's music sound so fresh as if it was written for him to dance to. I have watched many of the greatest conductors on film or live in concert over the last three decades but this one is totally unique for the level of enjoyment, excitement and learning one could draw from watching and hearing it over and over. I wish there were more music videos like this but there aren't many.
