The world was turned on to the Jimi Hendrix Experience in 1967 with the release of Are You Experienced? With a unique electric spin on R&B, rock, and soul, the Jimi Hendrix Experience would take the world by storm almost overnight and become the definitive voice of psychedelic music. By the end of that summer, Hendrix had become an international superstar.

The Experience DVD can be broken down into two sections. The first part is the half-hour documentary film Experience filmed in London 1967. The second half includes over 40 minutes of bonus material; live footage and music videos. Experience is more a collage of footage, including interviews and "videos," than a documentary. There are a lot better documentaries out there if historical accuracy is what you are looking for. However, if you want a glimpse of London in the late '60s and to see a young, optimistic, and happy Jimi Hendrix, Experience will deliver. The bonus material is what makes this DVD. The live footage is strong and the sound and visual reproduction is outstanding, particularly on the May 24, 1967, Stockholm performances of "Wind Cries Mary" and "Purple Haze." The highlight is the performance of "Red House" for SAT Swedish television on January 9, 1969; in spite of the obvious tension between the band members, the performance is perfect. The one low point: with these great extras and all the yet-to-be-released live footage that is still out there, one wonders why the DVD included an absurd "Dolly Dagger" video shot in 1997 and featuring Fawn Reed and James Hong. It's just awful. Fortunately it's at the end and doesn't take away from the overall strength of this title. -- Rob Bracco

5 out of 5 stars Worth every penny, and then some.......2007-07-06

This is most of Hendrix full set at Woodstock, and if you own the
Woodstock DVD, there is missing footage of the Hendrix set.

Well these guys dug through garbage cans, and home video to get every
scrap of video available. The story is told in the include booklet.
These guys dug through trash cans to get every piece of 16mm film, some
B&W, and private footage, that is the only footage that exists when the
film crew ran out of film simultaneously, and a student videographer was
still rolling is priceless. TO find footage to complete the Star Spangled
Banner only now, and enhance it, enhance the audio, remix it to 5.1, and
come out with a DVD that is worth every penny is so excellent! I can not
thank them enough for their hard work in producing this DVD.

If you own the Woodstock DVD set, buy this, you will not be sorry. If you
are a Hendrix fan, this is a simple must have. If you are a Woodstock
fan, this is a must have. Actually, if you are a Baby Boomer... There is
footage on this DVD that has never been published before... And only $10.

5 out of 5 stars Jimi Hendrix...Woodstock....this a classic...........2007-06-08

This is probably the best DVD you can own if you want to capture the magic of Jimi Hendrix.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Hendrix DVD.......2007-05-30

The production is not too bad, especially for a live concert. The footage of Hendrix does not have any added material mixed into it (a few shots of the crowd). I really liked the second guitarist in the band. It would have been nice to have had more of that sort of thing in Hendrix performances. The other Hendrix DVDs are of what look to be great performances, but the production quality is poor, or the event itself had problems or you have people imposing their impressions of the event onto the performance. With this one, you can sit back, watch Hendrix perform, its reasonably well produced and a good sampling of Hendrix works.

5 out of 5 stars Star Spangled Hendrix dvd.......2007-04-18

This dvd is essential viewing for all of my guitar students. The maestro's set was performed in daylight and there is a lot of focus on his hands. The two percussionists are low in the audio mix, but . . . who cares?!?! You know who the REAL star is! Billy Cox and Mitch Mitchell accompany the maestro Hendrix marvelously. The interviews are quite fun, and the extras make this product worth the price . . . but the real meat is in the music . . . and it's MEATY (slow start, . . . but not FOR LONG).

5 out of 5 stars Jimi Hendrix at his best.......2007-03-11

I believe Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock to be his best live performance from the other performances that are now available on DVD. Jimi had shelved the "Experience" (Noel Redding to be specific) and had put together a group of good friends and old Army buddies. The people in his life who knew him as Jimmy the person ,not as Jimi the guitar God. Though I am certain that they were in awe of his talent, who wouldn't be? He had a new direction he wanted to go and this band was the realization of that dream for him. In my humble opinion, I feel it worked very well. My only regret is that he wasn't able to see this formula to it's fullest potential. He gave the Woodstock audience a sampling of all of his different styles of playing. And with Larry Lee playing second lead/rhythm guitar ,Jimi was able to switch to the role of a backing /support guitarist, something not seen often.Though I wish Larry Lee had opted not to wear the scarf with the fringe hanging over his eyes! This performance was very fresh and ran very smoothly. It was obvious he was having a good time. And just when everybody thought he had reached the highlight of his performance ,he pulls out the Star Spangled Banner. People who don't admire Jimi Hendrix hear the Woodstock version of the Star Spangled Banner as a great disservice to the sanctity of our national anthem. Those of us of admire Jimi for what he is -a genius, hear Hendrix transform his Stratocaster to mimic the sounds of war complete with land mines, missles, crys, confusion, mingled with Taps. Jimi performed the Star Spangled Banner in a way that only he could, like all of his music. I watch my DVD's of his performances, and being a guitarist myself, I have an idea of what he did ,but I don't think anyone will ever figure out how he did it.

Until you've seen NASCAR: The IMAX Experience, you haven't really seen NASCAR. Even without the advantage of a gigantic IMAX screen and 70-millimeter 3-D projection, this 48-minute IMAX film is a perfect primer for newcomers to the sport of stock-car racing. Like all IMAX films it's aimed at a mainstream audience (hardcore NASCAR fans won't learn anything new here), so it covers a broad spectrum of general history, technical information, and pure high-speed adrenaline, from NASCAR's origins in 1947 to the oval-track highlights of the 2003 season. While Lonesome Dove director Simon Wincer captures the action (including some amazing mid-pack and cockpit footage during actual races), Kiefer Sutherland narrates an informative survey of season-long activities, from car building and safety measures at Mooresville, North Carolina, to pit-crew practice, transportation logistics, constant danger and its effect on drivers' wives and families, and the aerodynamics of drafting. Interesting trivia (each tire costs $389!) is included along with driver profiles and a compilation of memorable race finishes, but it's the IMAX footage that makes this a thrill-a-minute DVD, perfect for anyone who's just beginning to enjoy the world's fastest (and fastest-growing) sport. --Jeff Shannon

The NASCAR world was one completely foreign to me a year ago. Then my son (who was then 5) got hooked on the racing scenes in the Cars movie, and suddenly he discovered NASCAR... and now all our Sunday afternoons are booked watching races.

I bought this DVD for my son for his birthday a couple of weeks ago. It's really interesting and well done. I watch it having already been brought up to speed on the sport; I know nearly all the drivers, their sponsors, and their car numbers. But I imagine this documentary would be nearly as fascinating to newbies, mostly because of the IMAX treatment -- cameras putting you "right there," in this case right down on the track as cars whip by.

The DVD includes a good history lesson and great explanations of how a track functions on race day. The pit crews get proper treatment, too. One criticism is that few individual races or drivers are highlighted; perhaps the filmmakers simply wanted to emphasize the "experience."

I wish I had seen this on an IMAX screen!

I bought this as a joke for my friends who have just discovered Nascar! I must admit I found it interesting. Though I am not a fan of Nascar as they are, I can see the fun and attraction but must they always go in a circle-makes my neck hurt! Bring on demolition derby-my hidden favorite! Now if IMax could film that-WOW!

1 out of 5 stars mediocre.......2007-04-18

I thought that since this had so many disks that I was getting a bargain. I have barely watched it. I havent found it very helpful to teach me golf and it is definitly dated. I would definitly reccomend that noone buys this product.

4 out of 5 stars Great Value for the Money, but very dated.......2007-02-24

Like most golfers, I'm always looking for ways to improve. I've read books, watched instructional videos, and hit more buckets of balls than I can remember.

I stumbled across the DVD set a few years back and it seemed like a good value. As it turns out, it was a good value, as I got lots of helpful instruction and advice for not too much money.

The one thing that's obvious, however, is that this is by no means a "new" video series. Everything from Wally's haircut to the overall production value indicate that this was filmed a long time ago. Still, many of the fundamentals of golf haven't changed, and there is still some valuable info for the novice/intermediate golfer.

Wally seems to rely a lot on training aids, which I'm not usually a big fan of, but he clearly believes in their worth. There are some good sections on course management which seemed to be the most helpful to me.

3 out of 5 stars too much info..........2007-02-20

as with most golf instuction too much info. however, it will be good over a long period of time. can be overwhelming.

3 out of 5 stars Ok, not great.......2007-01-10

This a very complete set for the price, but the lessons (as the cover might suggest) are very dated. This is a good start for people just getting into the game, but don't expect anything cutting edge or particularly entertaining

5 out of 5 stars Wally Armstrong DVD.......2007-01-10

Excellent DVD,with an abundance of great information.I could watch it many times and continue to draw out useful golf tips.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING MUSIC EXPERIENCE........2007-07-07

Can you just imaging how Bach can be sound if you spread in 3-dimension
The polyphony of different voices playing around you creating amazing music experience, everything about that is on this disc. If you have or plan to have the technology to experience it, not to have this album in your collection will be a big loss.

5 out of 5 stars Vary natural and exiting new experience........2007-07-07

It is sound like placing you in the center of the mix, but they use different "voices" in different points of the circle, so it is not a static setup. This mix is geniously build based on that approach. I am certain that it very detail serious work was done transcripting this originals for this kind of presentation. Vary natural and exiting new experience like Bach music was written to be produced that way.

There is a lot of classic stuff out on synthesizer, and this effort is probably among the better examples of the format that I have heard. However this album is obviously done using virtual instruments it is not sound like traditional synthesizer music at all. Allot of voices presented with flutes, corns, synthesized sounds of strings and harps, different organs. Sound is very natural.

I think they did the right thing. When you put in the disk, it starts playing right away, and if left unattended will just play all the way through over and over. You have chapter advance, pause and stop all active on the remote, as well as fast forward and reverse. There is a video track of still pictures of flowers which change periodically, but this one isn't really one to watch. Not even a track title or track list to be had, not even a menu. Leave the projector off, and just turn on the player and receiver, and you have music, similar to a CD.

All in all, I like it a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Music album of the future........2007-07-02

First of all this is not just another Bach record in surround sound on HD DVD.
This is new conceptual work featuring original arrangement produced specifically for surround sound using location of sound as a main creative element. With the polyphony of Bach music this sound is really amazing.
Besides that the instrumentation itself is very interesting. Honestly I could not think about anything that was done lately that can match the surround sound effect of this HD DVD. I have an opinion that this is the great showcase of how the music will be experienced and produced in the nearest future.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most interesting Bach recordings for years to come........2007-07-02

All that matter about this album is the new music experience of Original Bach Music produced by Alexander Jero. I own several albums by Alexander and always surprised again and again the diversity of his talent. Synthesized and Classical instruments are playing in Perfect Harmony and Chrystal clarity of High Definition Discrete Multichannel audio. And 3-dimensional Sound philosophy making this record the One of the most interesting Bach recordings for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars In response to previous review about dissapointment........2007-07-02

Don't make this review give you the wrong idea.
This is new groundbreaking project in modern music culture.
Somebody just did't get it. As you can see here and I know from the forums most of the people are into it.
Experience it for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Even better than I remembered it.......2006-09-07

In an A&E interview Robin Williams was asked to name the funniest person alive, and without hesitation he responded: "Barry Humphries". That's a mighty substantial reference, and it's a safe bet that if you like one of these comedians, you'll like if not love the other as well. Both performers are at their absolute best in off-the-cuff, impromptu situations, and fortunately "The Dame Edna Experience" provides a near-perfect format for Humphries.

The heart and genius of these shows is the level of emotional honesty Dame Edna constantly presents us with. E.g. as Sean Connery is droning on about his poor childhood, just at the very moment we start to think, "what a bore this guy is", the camera cuts to Dame Edna -- and there's the exact same thought sitting clear as day on her face. It's absolutely hysterical and, as viewers, rewarding. In her own inimitable way, Dame Edna constantly reminds us of just how ridiculous celebrity really is.

5 out of 5 stars Isn't she GORGEOUS?!.......2005-12-21

I honestly confess there are many times in viewing the wonderment that is Dame Edna Everege when I must remind myself "That is really a MAN named Barry Humphries" (!).

But who could fail to embrace and adore Dame Edna? Her scathing wit, brilliant double entendres, and magnificent facial contortions are all signature of her placement among the "Super-Mega-Stars" and "Squillionairesses" of the world.

Her booming salutation "HELLO POSSUMS!" and her astonishing array of "party frocks" are but two signature themes to her "Experience". And any human who can both balance and ambulate in such fierce pumps is deserving of respect at the very least! Not to mention the dismally silent, perpetually suffering bridesmaid, Madge Alsop -- what a presence she manages to exude without making so much as a murmur! "Quick sticks, woman! The BADGE, Madge -- the BADGE!"

While some of the guests Dame Edna interviews are unknown to modern American viewers, this collection is still worth every moment -- our privilege is to partake of the Dame's "Niceness", to "care and to share", and to be amused no end by her antics.

Those familiar with the original Isle of Wight DVD/VHS release will be pleasantly surprised by Blue Wild Angel. For one thing, the soundtrack has been remixed in both stereo and 5.1 surround. Hendrix's legendary Isle of Wight show may have been notoriously riddled with technical difficulties, but in all honesty, it is one of his better live recordings, and Eddie Kramer's remix sounds superb. Next, Blue Wild Angel includes many songs missing from the original release such as "Lover Man," "Foxey Lady," "Message to Love," "Ezy Rider," and "Purple Haze." By far the highlights of the performance are the mesmerizing, newly unedited versions of "Red House" and "Machine Gun." Finally, as an added bonus, the concert is introduced by a mini documentary about Hendrix's involvement with the Isle of Wight festival. This introduction is told through new interviews with Mitch Mitchell, Billy Cox, and Eddie Kramer and footage from Murray Lerner's Message to Love: The Isle of Wight Festival rockumentary. Blue Wild Angel is a great addition to any Hendrix fan's collection. --Rob Bracco

1 out of 5 stars Historically significant...not a good performance.......2007-06-30

First of all look at the cover...It's in red and black and says 'Blue Wild Angel'? How lame is that? If you research the rest of this tour most of the shows were considered bad. Jimi just did'nt care at this point in time. That being said, there are some good moments(though no great ones imo). The show seems to start well and end well but is hit and miss in the middle. Jimi did'nt want to be there and it shows. However they do play for a long time...Jimi is visibly tired and stoned...and out of tune most of the time...this DVD is for die hard fans and collectors...made me sad to watch actually...Jimi deserves better and this should not have been released...just because you can does'nt mean you should...

3 out of 5 stars Half Bad.......2007-05-30

The first half of this performance is horrible due to equipment problems. The second half of the performance is great. It's worth buying for the second half of the performance. Too bad they did All Along the Watchtower during the first half of the performance.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best-filmed Hendrix concerts, even if not one of his best.......2007-04-09

This concert is a must have for Hendrix fans for all the reasons listed by others below. The film quality is great, almost the whole concert is shown, unlike the horrible edited versions of the past, and the concert is not as bad as some might say, although many greater ones have been preserved on tape. On some songs he's distracted by equipment problems, but on others you really can see Hendrix at his best. It's just an uneven concert really, but worth having nonetheless. My only complaint is that this DVD is 'PCFriendly', and so unlike every other DVD in my collection, wouldn't play on my PC as I only had 4 GB free on my hard disk. Unfortunately, I don't think there is a 'PCUnfriendly' version that simply plays by popping it into your disk drive, so I would suggest anyone without a DVD player and a full hard disk take into consideration that you won't be able to watch this DVD. However, still 5 stars for a great release.

5 out of 5 stars JIMI HENDRIX'S FINAL MOMENTS ON FILM!.......2006-09-25

I will be doing a review on the historic legendary classic DVD concert entitled "Jimi Hendrix - Blue Wild Angel - Live at the Isle of Wight." I will also be editing this review from time to time so that you the consumer will get the best and most accurate review possible. Before I begin, I would highly suggest that you read my other reviews on Jimi's historic landmark concerts at the "Monterey Pop Festival" on 18 June 1967 and the "Woodstock Festival" on 18 August 1969. They are both long reviews but they contain a lot of information on Jimi. I do hope that you read and enjoy them both. It would also help me shorten this long review and not have to add all that information in this review.

For me personally, this marks the third review on Jimi Hendrix's legendary concert series which focus's on some of his most memorable and unforgettable performances in Rock n' Roll history. Each concert that Jimi performed on would also show the different phases and differences he displayed which would also show visibly and be audible in his music. I guess you can say that every performance Jimi delivered in his short brief career all sounded different, they never sounded the same. The year 1970 started off as a busy year for Jimi, he performed many concerts across the country and in other countries as well. At least four concerts were partially filmed, "Live at Berkeley" 30 May 1970, "Live at the Atlanta Pop Festival" 4 July 1970, "The Rainbow Bridge concert" 30 July 1970 and the one I am reviewing for you now. Jimi's "Isle of Wight" performance, according to many Rock critics, is Hendrix's final moments on film. Enough said, its time to go back in time to the "Isle of Wight Festival" 30 August 1970.

Jimi was not feeling very good during this period, story has it that before showtime, he had been extremely sick as a result of taking some bad acid. Because of this, Jimi's scheduled performance had to be put off numerous times until he finally took the stage late at 2 A.M. In my opinion, from what I've read in many Hendrix biographies, Jimi was taking drugs as a result of going through a deep depression and being very unhappy at this stage of his career. Jimi was also living the Sex, Drugs & Rock n' Roll lifestyle and was not getting the rest that was needed to deliver the great performances. To make matters worse, the pressures of his manager Mike Jeffery (on financial matters and changes in personnel in Jimi's bands) and Jimi needing more money to complete his own recording studio called "Electric Lady Studios," (thus steeling him away from what he really loved, which is recording in the studio and creating new songs) Jimi had to force himself to go on the road on the 1970 tour and do what he does best, PERFORM LIVE WITH HIS GUITAR. But with all the pressures mounted on Jimi during the 1970 tour, that spark of being the charismatic showman on stage that Jimi was always known for was gone by the time he performed at the "Isle of Wight Festival." PLEASE NOTE THAT I AM IN NO WAY KNOCKING HENDRIX IN ANY WAY. If you see the film, you will notice how depressed and unhappy Jimi really is. Whatever it was that bothered Jimi (I have many opinions) during that period would take a toll and would eventually get the best of him. Shortly after the "Isle of Wight" performance, with Jimi's life falling apart, sadly, on 18 September 1970, a few weeks later, Jimi hendrix died. Despite all of his troubles and not playing his guitar at 100%, Jimi STILL dug deep down in his heart and delivered a great performance by letting his guitar do all the talking. Considering the circumstances, its a wonder that Jimi even performed on that early morning on 30 August 1970.

Jimi performed 18 songs on that early morning of 30 August 1970, but only 15 songs made it on this DVD release. I will review all 18 songs here and are as follows: (1.) "God Save The Queen" (the British National Anthem done the Jimi Hendrix way, EXCELLENT!), (2.) "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" (EXCELLENT! Jimi was the first artist that ever attempted and succeeded in performing this Beatles legendary song live.), (3.) "Spanish Castle Magic" (EXCELLENT, OUTSTANDING!), (4.) "All Along The Watchtower" (EXCELLENT! Another one of Jimi's great tributes to Bob Dylan.), (5.) "Machine Gun" (EXCELLENT, OUTSTANDING! Jimi's actually bringing the Vietnam war to the audience and firing shots through his explosive guitar.), (6.) "Lover Man" (EXCELLENT! Jimi's answer to the B.B. King classic "Rock Me Baby."), (7.) "Freedom" (EXCELLENT! I love this song. Jimi uses his Flying V guitar for this song.), (8.) "Red House" (unhappy moment for Jimi, but still EXCELLENT! Jimi had problems finding his groove for this song but eventually found it somewhere in the middle of his guitar solo.), (9.) "Dolly Dagger" (EXCELLENT! One of my favorites.), (10.) "Midnight Lightning" (not on DVD release, EXCELLENT!), (11.) "Foxey Lady" (EXCELLENT!), (12.) "Message To Love" (EXCELLENT!), (13.) "Hey Baby" (New Rising Sun) (not on the DVD release, EXCELLENT! This is a beautiful slow song.), (14.) "Ezy Ryder" (EXCELLENT! This song KICKS!), (15.) "Hey Joe" (not on the DVD release, EXCELLENT!), (16.) "Purple Haze" (EXCELLENT! Another great version that will leave you in a "Purple Haze" for "Daze."), (17.) "Voodoo Child" (Slight return) (EXCELLENT! Another one of my favorites. Jimi wrote and sings this song like he truly means it.) and (18.) "In From The Storm" (EXCELLENT! Another great ROCKER!)

I'd like to add a little note to this performance, Jimi made a lot of guitar errors on some of his songs during his "Isle of Wight" performance. But as the late great Stevie Ray Vaughn once said, "I even copied Jimi's mistakes because they even sounded great." After Jimi's "Isle of Wight" performance on 30 August 1970, and prior to Jimi's unexpected death on 18 September 1970, he would only give one final performance. Jimi's "Live at the Isle of Fehmarn" in Insel Fehmarn, Germany on 6 September 1970 would mark the end of of his incredible spectacular career. Jimi's last concert performance is available through Dagger Records / Experience Hendrix LLC.

In closing, Jimi Hendrix will always be the GREATEST GUITARIST THAT EVER LIVED. The date of 18 September 1970 will always be a sad day in Rock n' Roll history. We'll never know just how far Jimi's natural gifts and talents would have taken us, but I'm sure that there would have been no boundaries or limits. But most importantly, Jimi possessed something that few guitarists have; Jimi had and played his guitar with a lot of heart. Jimi's magical sounds and unimaginable effects that accompanied his brilliant music which then flowed through his guitar were driven by his big heart as a result of his love, passion and devotion for his guitar. If a naturally gifted guitar genius were without that real important quality, what else is there? What a TRAGIC loss for Rock n' Roll. Thanks for reading my long review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for all of you. LONG LIVE ROCK N' ROLL! Rock out always. Take care, J.L.

Can an effective episode of Classic Albums be produced when its subject's creator has been dead for more than a quarter century? Perhaps surprisingly, the answer is yes. With Experience members Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell, additional musicians on the order of Steve Winwood and Dave Mason, manager Chas Chandler, and engineer Eddie Kramer telling much of the story, Jimi Hendrix still stands front and center in this hourlong examination of the making of his most ambitious release, the 1968 double LP Electric Ladyland. The series's usual centerpiece (isolating parts of the multitrack tapes to illuminate the whole) is invaluable not only in demonstrating Hendrix's genius for building performances in the studio, but, by extension, implying how the music coming out of his head reflected his heart. The result is possibly the most moving documentary about Hendrix, and certainly one whose rare bits of film (such as a promotional clip for "Burning of the Midnight Lamp") make it even more invaluable. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Behind the scenes in the studio.......2006-11-04

Great video that focuses on the mixing of the individual parts in the studio mixing and really has some great behind the scenes glimpses into the making of this classic album. Very good quality and production. Very interesting to all guitarists interested in classic rock.

3 out of 5 stars Okay, not outstanding.......2005-09-11

While this DVD is interesting and well-produced, it doesn't measure up to other releases in the "Classic Album" series. The great bulk of screen time is spent on talking head interviews. That in itself would be okay, but they focus more on praising Jimi than discussing the music and the nuts and bolts of its creation. There is a lot of material that didn't make it onto this DVD - extensive alternate takes and outtakes - that has been broadcast on the radio. That material would have provided a fascinating supplement and insight into the Electric Ladyland creation process, and the brilliance behind the compositions of the songs. But instead this disc shows too much reminiscing about Jimi and mourning of his early death.

Once again, Eddie Kramer provides the meat of the subject matter, playing the mixer like a virtuoso. But even here his comments seem curiously attenuated. Electric Ladyland is a masterwork of studio recording, one of the striking achievements of 20th century rock music, and a complete treatment could fill several DVDs. Here we only get snippets. The same is true of the performances; this disc only shows brief clips, frequently interrupted, of various classic performances.

This is a disc for completists, and you probably won't want to watch it more than once. It talks about Jimi a lot, but there just isn't much of him here.

5 out of 5 stars Recounting The Journey .......2004-09-12

Classic Albums recounters the journey of the legendary music recordings.Classic Albums takes you a behind the scences look at one of jimi hendrix's most succesful albums. The story is told in rare archival film footage, music, and from a diary kept by a hendrix employee. Their are many great interviews from the members themself Mitch Mitchell, and Noel Redding as well as keyboard virtuoso Steve Windwood. I think the best part of the film is Eddie Kramer who engineered the electric ladyland sessions. This film is loaded with fascinating footage of Jimi Hendrix in the studio. I think from one perspective we can all appreciate how great Electric Ladyland really was.

Made less than a year before his death in September 1970, Band of Gypsys was an album recorded live to fulfill a contractual obligation for a long-forgotten deal Jimi Hendrix signed when he still spelled his name "Jimmy." Hendrix had just disbanded the Jimi Hendrix Experience, and in order to dispense with the album as quickly as possible, he put together a new trio featuring Billy Cox (an old Army buddy) and drummer Buddy Miles, whose bombastic singing and thudding drum style would soon pollute FM airwaves across the nation. (Former Hendrix drummer Mitch Mitchell refers to him here as "William the Concreter," for his cement-mixer sense of rhythm.) They booked the Fillmore East with the idea of recording the shows for a live album, and this DVD features recently unearthed film footage of that historic performance, with Hendrix at the top of his powers (despite Miles's excesses). It also offers several other rare live performances from British clubs in the mid-1960s. The musical moments are mixed with new interview footage, including conversations with the self-effacing Cox and the self-aggrandizing Miles. If you've only heard the CDs (Band of Gypsys and Jimi Hendrix: Live at the Fillmore East), you've only gotten half of this particular Jimi Hendrix experience. --Marshall Fine

5 out of 5 stars Hendrix in a different light.......2007-04-12

If you have never seen The Band of Gypsys live at the Fillmore there are two things you need to know. The actual concert footage is black and
white. The quality is not all that great and the sound could definitely be better. The second thing is that it is great. Hendrix was totally focused primarily because I think he knew they were recording an album to fulfill a contract commitment he got into with Capitol. Hendrix, Buddy Miles , and Billy Cox were tight but there was also a fluidity in there playing that allowed Hendrix to be spontaneous making his performances unique. It was a shame that this group did not go on to do other projects. Hendrix was in his element and it was evident. If "MACHINE GUN" were the only song on this DVD it would be worth it. He was just amazing to watch and even after all these years he is still one of the most profound and innovative guitar players of our time.
Another aspect of "the Band of Gypsys" is that Buddy Miles and Hendrix share the vocal responsibilities giving the band another dynamic unlike the "Experience". Miles drumming and Billy Cox's bass playing gave Jimi a solid foundation to work on. I liked the soul inspired songs they did together. The film part of the DVD is designed as a documentary with interviews by Buddy Miles, Billy Cox, Mitch Mitchell and everyone else that was in some way connected with this project. Actually I could have lived with out it but my guess is that there was so little actual concert footage [not to mention the quality] that I think they thought they had to put something else in there to compensate. I can't help thinking that there is more footage that just hasn't been released yet. What about the 2nd night they played? And during the documentary part there was some color film footage, where is it? Anyway, I am sure there is more yet to be released and when it does I will be there eagerly waiting.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars for historical footage that could not be improved upon.......2007-04-09

If you're new to Hendrix though, be warned that genuine footage from the trenches of the Western Front from 1916, as well as plenty of footage from WW2, exists with far better picture quality than this Hendrix concert, although shot after man had landed on the moon. In fact, it's not much better than the moon-landing footage itself. How this can be will always remain a mystery to me, but clearly this fact is beyond the control of anybody trying to release what was filmed in a commercially viable form. I think they did a pretty good job, although I still feel this CD is more of historical interest and could be hard to digest for a non-Hendrix fan, or could put off the uninitiated. If you're looking for your first Hendrix DVD, rather get the film Jimi Hendrix, Woodstock or the Isle of Wight.

5 out of 5 stars DVD DOCUMENTARY SHEDS NEW LIGHT ON HENDRIX'S LEGENDARY "BAND OF GYPSYS!".......2006-10-02

Since today in 2 October 2006, Before I start my whole review, I would like to wish a Happy Birthday to my Dad who is also the biggest inspiration in my life. There is no man I respect more. Love You Dad, J.L.

I will be doing a review on the legendary historic DVD documentary simply entitled "Jimi Hendrix - Band Of Gypsys - Live At The Fillmore East" by the late great guitar legend Jimi Hendrix. As always, I will be editing this review from time to time so that you the consumer will get the best and most accurate review possible. Before I begin, I would highly suggest that you read my other reviews on Jimi's legendary historic landmark concerts at the "Monterey Pop Festival" on 18 June 1967, the "Woodstock Festival" on 18 August 1969, "Jimi Plays Berkeley" on 30 May 1970, "Rainbow Bridge Film And Concert" on 30 July 1970 and the "Isle Of Wight Festival" on 30 August 1970. They are long reviews and I do deeply apologize for that, but they do contain a lot of valuable information on Jimi that you might find very interesting. I do hope that you will read and enjoy all five reviews when time permits. It would also help me greatly in shortening this long review and not have to add all of that information from my previous five reviews in this review.

For me personally, this marks the sixth review that I have written on Jimi Hendrix's legendary concert series which focus's on some of his most memorable and unforgettable concert performances in Rock n' Roll history. This DVD documentary release of the "Band Of Gypsys Live At The Fillmore East," despite winning a Grammy, is exactly what it was originally intended to be, a documentary. This performance was NEVER filmed or meant to be a concert film, let alone a documentary. This DVD documentary release features the ONLY known Color and Black and White RARE footage of the group in concert performing such songs as the POWERFULLY EXPLOSIVE "Machine Gun," "Who Knows," "Izabella," "Fire" and "Foxey Lady" from the legendary guitarist's 31 December 1969 and 1 January 1970 Fillmore East performances. These live performances were originally released on vinyl and cassette as a partial compilation entitled "Hendrix - Band Of Gypsys" in 1970. Many rock critics as well as many Hendrix fans have wondered if the "Band Of Gypsys" complete Fillmore East performances would ever be released. There have been numerous bootlegs of these performances that have surfaced through the years but with bad sound quality. That suspense would finally end years later with the 1999 release of the 2-CD set entitled the "Band Of Gypsys Live At The Fillmore East" along with this DVD documentary, also released separately in 1999. The revolutionary impact Jimi Hendrix, Bassist Billy Cox and Drummer Buddy Miles had upon the boundaries and definitions of Rock, R&B and Funk can be traced into four concerts over the course of two evenings. The story of this ground-breaking music is finally told here in interviews with Jimi, and for the first time, ALL FOUR of his bandmates, Mitch Mitchell, Noel Redding, Billy Cox and Buddy Miles. Also contributing interviews are fellow Hendrix DIEHARDS such as Lenny Kravitz, Vernon Reid, Slash and Jimi's original Engineer Eddie Kramer.

First of all, I would like to deeply apologize to all the readers for my long reviews. The reason why I did this is because I feel that it's my responsibility as a reviewer to provide as much information on the main topic to the readers as possible. Please keep in mind that all of the information that is discussed in this review is based on facts disclosed from numerous Hendrix biographies. Enough of that, it is now time to take a journey back in time to the Fillmore East performances on 31 December 1969 and 1 January 1970.

To begin, the idea of the "Band Of Gypsys" was the mastermind of Jimi with the intensions of creating a new sound consisting of combining Rock n' Roll with Soul, R&B and Funk. With this new sound, Jimi had high hopes in drawing the black audiences to his concerts other than the white audiences which were all of his audiences. To achieve this experiment, Jimi would have to recruit Drummer Buddy Miles and his long-time friend and Army buddy, Bassist Billy Cox to accomplish this. In reality, Jimi TRULY believed that he had the PERFECT combination of musicians needed to accomplish this creativity of the new sound he was after mainly because ALL THREE shared the same ideas in combining Rock n' Roll with Soul, R&B and Funk. The four shows that the "Band Of Gypsys" performed at The Fillmore East is EVERYTHING that Jimi had hoped for, and is a TRUE TESTAMENT of the new sound that was to evolve into a reality. With the success of these four shows, it would seem that the "Band Of Gypsys" would stay together and continue further into this new sound with the advancement of bigger and better things. But it was not to be.

There was one BIG problem, Jimi's Manager Mike Jeffery. Jeffery opposed and hated Jimi's new ideas and the direction he was heading. Jeffery had different ideas as to the direction Jimi should be heading. Jeffery's main objective and goal was to REFORM the ORIGINAL EXPERIENCE consisting of Drummer Mitch Mitchell and Bassist Noel Redding. Hendrix opposed and hated that idea due to the fact that Hendrix did not want to work with Redding ever again. This incident would be one of MANY which would result in DISASTER and would eventually start developing into personal matters and bitter differences between Hendrix and Jeffery. With this problem escalating, Jeffery would DELIBERATELY and MALICIOUSLY CONSPIRE in DESTROYING Jimi's new ideas and PLOTTING in breaking up the "Band Of Gypsys." When Jeffery finally succeeded in breaking up the "Band Of Gypsys," Jimi would make an effort in compromising and complying with Jeffery's CONTROLLING DEMANDS by keeping Billy Cox and bringing Mitch Mitchell back to resume his duties as Jimi's Drummer. With this new band line up, Jeffery volunteered and took it upon himself, in FIRING Miles and then DELIBERATELY blamed it on Jimi by saying that "it was Jimi's idea." With Jimi having to put up with MANY of Jeffery's CROOKED SCHEMES, you may ask yourself, why didn't Jimi just fire Mike Jeffery? According to numerous Hendrix biographies, it wasn't that simple. In reality, the truth is that Jimi DID attempt in trying to sever all ties with Jeffery on many occasions, but was unsuccessful in doing so despite seeking legal assistance. What it all comes down to is that Jeffery had Hendrix in a HEADLOCK, Hendrix was bound and controlled under contract with Jeffery. Jimi's contract with Jeffery was IRONCLAD and UNBREAKABLE. This is one of many stressful incidents and factors that would eventually build up in Jimi resulting in him going into a deep depression. Jimi's drug abuse would worsen as a result of his depression. With these two factors, and Jimi's lack of sleep, they would hinder and alter Jimi's destiny in his masterful creativity and would affect his personality on stage in which he would no longer be the charismatic showman he was always known for in order to deliver the great performances.

In closing, Jeffery's responsibilities, as Manager, should have been the handling of Jimi's business and financial matters ONLY and should have left Jimi alone when it came to the band, creating music and performing on tour. I also believe that Jeffery was NOT looking after Jimi's best interests. Maybe Jeffery was trying to hold Jimi back because he was worried about how Jimi's white audience would react to Jimi's new band, new sounds and music as a result of being TOO FAR ADVANCED AHEAD OF HIS TIME. Then again, what Manager, such as Jeffery, has the right to tell THE GREATEST GUITARIST THAT EVER LIVED what kind of music HE thinks Jimi should be playing or who HE thinks Jimi should have in his band! It is too bad that Jeffery isn't alive to defend himself and answer these questions, he would later die in a plane crash in 1973. Despite all of the many tensions and disasters, it is STILL evident to this day, thirty-six years later, that Jimi Hendrix's accomplishments and his masterful skilled guitar playing is still as big of an influence in Rock n' Roll today then it was back then when Jimi was alive which shows that he has NEVER been forgotten as long as Rock n' Roll music as well as music, in general, STILL EXISTS. And since I feel confident of this, Jimi Hendrix's name will ALWAYS be mentioned above ALL the LEGENDARY GUITAR GREATS and his music will FOREVER influence many more generations to come to time indefinite. Thanks for reading my long and lengthy review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for all of you. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. JIMI LIVES! LONG LIVE ROCK N' ROLL! Rock out always. Take care, J.L.

Description

In 1931 the rains stopped and the "black blizzards" began. Powerful dust storms carrying millions of tons of stinging, blinding black dirt swept across the Southern Plains--the panhandles of Texas and Oklahoma, western Kansas, and the eastern portions of Colorado and New Mexico. Topsoil that had taken a thousand years per inch to build suddenly blew away in only minutes. One journalist traveling through the devastated region dubbed it the "Dust Bowl."

This American Experience film presents the remarkable story of the determined people who clung to their homes and way of life, enduring drought, dust, disease--even death--for nearly a decade. Less well-known than those who sought refuge in California, typified by the Joad family in John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath," the Dust Bowlers who stayed overcame an almost unbelievable series of calamities and disasters.

3 out of 5 stars Dust Bowl.......2007-05-01

With the title, "Surviving the Dust Bowl," I was pleased to learn that 3/4 of the residents in that region stayed, something I never knew. However, I would have liked for this work to speak more about how to survive in a disaster area, how to make ends meet, and how to keep one's sanity.

The work is diverse in terms of gender. Because many Native Americans live in that region, I wish they could have been brought up. Did they stay because reservations aren't mobile? It's never stated. The work is a bit Eurocentric. Still, seeing female and male Dust Bowl survivors cry about their ordeal tugged at my heart. One interviewee probably had Parkinson's Disease. I wish this could have been stated because viewers unfamiliar with the malady may have thought the memories were causing her to shake that way.

This work is very focused on visuals. Yes, moving images had been around for three decades before the disaster, but still when someone says, "Dirt whirled a mile up," you could see it. When another person says, "All the livestock died," they show it. To the contrary, the work says farmers had to change their techniques and they don't really spell out what they did wrong and how they tried to improve. The narrator says the disaster could and did happen again, but no further facts are given.

Usually, geographic mobility is seen as a good think, or at least, geographic immobility is portrayed as being bad. So this documentary does flip the script in trying to positively portrayed people who stayed in harsh conditions. Seeing this also reminded me of Farm Aid concerts and how risky agricultural life can be.

3 out of 5 stars a quick, influential moment in history.......2007-05-25

Like punks in Britain, hippies in the US were a passing phenomenon. However, they had a major impact on American culture and it's great that the American Experience series has documented it.

Many people have said the hippies of the 1960s became the corporate enthusiasts of the 1980s. I'd add that they are now the generation that wants to make sure they receive full retirement, pension, and Social Security benefits. Nothing "free" comes to mind now. Still, this may be a useful work for younger generations to see.

Young people had concerns about a war, just like they do now. This documentary is filled with older, reserved people fearing younger, liberal people; this division exists in the 2000s as well. If everyone was moving to San Francisco then, in my generation they were moving to Seattle. If they were worried about the Grateful Dead then, they worried about gangster rap for my generation. They spoke of LSD then; now the concern is ecstasy. One exceptional difference is how Woodstock of the 1960s totally had good intentions that Woodstock of the 1990s lacked.

I loved how this documentary revealed that not everyone had altruistic motives. Some college students played hippie, but had no interest in abandoning school. Some denizens wanted the drugs and could not care less about the ideas. This work may be fascinating for public health workers and economists just as much as historians. This documentary stated that hippies themselves didn't want everyone to move to SF for fear that their limited supply of LSD would be depleted. Having hundreds of runaway teenagers and people living in parks is a health-related and policy-based crisis.

As much as challenging racism was brought up, photos and footage of this time and place seemed very homogenous. Granted, the country was not as racially diverse as it is now. And also granted, the Black Power movement was departing from the pro-integration stance of the Civil Rights movement. Still, looking at this documentary, I saw a lot of people speaking about equality with people just like themselves.

Willie Brown is noted as having been a state assemblyman, but they never mention he also served as the city's mayor. Actor Peter Coyote uses a profanity that is, surprisingly, not bleeped out of this public television special.

I could also relate as a person who moved to the Bay Area briefly. This documentary mentions that many people who came to that area also quickly departed from it. I can relate. SF is a strong example of the "grass being greener on the other side."
