At long last Pink Floyd: Pulse has arrived on DVD, and Floyd fans already know it's a major cause to celebrate. The original VHS release was a milestone bestseller, but it seemed to take forever for the DVD to arrive, with numerous delays while Floyd guitarist David Gilmour and long-time Floyd producer James Guthrie labored to restore, re-edit, and remix this legendary concert video in 5.1-channel Dolby Surround Sound. The resulting two-disc set was well worth the wait: While the limitations of the original video source are still evident in the sometimes-hazy image quality (Gilmour would later admit the concert should have been captured on film), Floyd fans will unanimously agree that Pulse has never looked or sounded better, and only the absence of group co-founder Roger Waters prevents this from being the ultimate document of Pink Floyd in performance. (Even without Waters, it's easily one of the group's most impressive stage productions.) Gracefully directed with minimal intrusion by veteran music video and concert director David Mallet, and shot on video during Pink Floyd's two-week stint at London's Earls Court Exhibition Centre in October 1994, this 145-minute performance (from Floyd's Division Bell tour) is a sonic marvel to behold. Under a massive arch festooned with then-state-of-the-art laser, lighting, and projection systems, the 1987 incarnation of Pink Floyd (Gilmour, keyboardist Richard Wright, and drummer Nick Mason) and their stellar supporting band kicks off with "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" (a loving tribute to Floyd co-founder Syd Barrett), followed by four tracks from The Division Bell, two from 1987's A Momentary Lapse of Reason, "Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)" from 1979's magnum opus The Wall, and leading into intermission with an absolutely stunning performance of "One of These Days," the timeless opening track from 1971's Meddle.

The centerpiece of Disc 2 is a near-perfect performance of 1974's Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety--reason enough to make this a must-have DVD for even the most casual Floyd admirers. And while no one will ever re-create the sheer magnificence of Clare Torry's original tour de force vocals on "The Great Gig in the Sky," it's safe to say that backup singers Sam Brown, Claudia Fontaine, and Durga McBroom deliver the next best thing, in addition to seamless contributions throughout the concert. After the closing heartbeat of "Eclipse," the concert ends with encore performances of "Wish You Were Here," "Comfortably Numb," and a no-holds-barred, pyrotechnically explosive rendition of The Wall's "Run Like Hell," all showcasing Gilmour's guitar mastery with frequent close-ups of his picking and fret-work as seen throughout the concert. (Like Gilmour, Mason and Wright were never dynamic onstage, and that's true here as well, but their technical precision is fully evident, and while guitarist Tim Renwick and saxophonist Dick Parry are each given moments to shine, bassist Guy Pratt is a worthy substitution for Waters, especially when vocally sparring with Gilmour on "Run Like Hell.")

With beautiful packaging, an 8-page booklet, and menu designs by long-time Floyd associate Storm Thorgerson, the DVDs offer an abundance of bonus features including "Bootlegging the Bootleggers," featuring surprisingly good-quality "boot" video performances of "What Do You Want From Me?," "On the Turning Away," "Poles Apart," and "Marooned." The surreal round-ratio screen films seen throughout the concert can all be viewed independently (still in round format, and several offered in both original and alternate versions). Music videos for "Learning to Fly" and "Take It Back" are included on Disc 1, along with "Tour Stuff" including maps, itineraries, and stage plans for the 1994 tour. "Say Goodbye to Life as We Know It" is a playful backstage video (mostly involving the production staff's ongoing quest for a good pint of beer), and after delivering a heartfelt introduction to Pink Floyd's 1996 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (with Roger Waters and Syd Barrett acknowledged by Gilmour), Smashing Pumpkins leader Billy Corgan joins Gilmour and Wright for a moving acoustic performance of "Wish You Were Here" (directed at Waters, perhaps?). Additional features include album cover art, a photo gallery, and the concert-only audio choice between a 448kbps audio bitstream or a higher-quality 640kbps stream for higher-quality DVD players. The system set-up feature ensures that audiophiles will achieve optimum speaker performance in keeping with Pink Floyd's exacting technical standards. In tandem with the superior concert presentation, these features make Pulse one of the best--if not the best--music DVDs of 2006, guaranteed to satisfy Floyd fans for many years to come. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Pink Floyd - Pulse.......2007-07-05

I can only say, Wow this is totally awesome. The sound quality and concert footage gives you the best seat in the house.

5 out of 5 stars had it for years on lazer disc now finally on DVD.......2007-06-22

Saw this show twice in Atlanta. This is a must have. The only thing about this show that isn't as good as the 87 tour is the girl singers. They still are good though. This was the stage and light show that will probally keep David Gilmore from ever touring Pink Floyd again. I don't think they could out do it. Great sound and lots of extras the lazer disc didn't have. You won't miss Roger too bad trust me. This show was history. If you missed it this will get you there. Turn it up and enjoy

5 out of 5 stars pink floyd in all their glory.......2007-06-15

This DVD is definitely a winner...The unique sound of "the Floyd" comes across splendidly here...Video and audio are extra sharp, and the colors and the laser effects are outstanding...get it for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2007-06-13

Disc 1 has great visuals and excellent sound, Disc 2, same but the last 3 songs are great. Well worth the $$$$

4 out of 5 stars Wow! Almost like being there, but............2007-06-12

I bought PULSE on VHS when it first came out a few years ago. I was so excited when I heard it was coming to DVD.....and a little disappointed after my first viewing.

DON'T GET ME WRONG! This is an EXCELLENT performance from one of the most artistic, prolific and enduring rock bands of our time!

The only problem is, the video is not of DVD quality. The original footage was shot on video tape and a DVD tranfer is only as good as the master it was taken from. You can only do so much with a sub-par master tape (remember, this concert was recorded before the age of DVD and video tape was more or less the industry standard at the time).

The redeeming factor of this release is that it's the only way you can get the entire Dark Side of the Moon album performed LIVE! Gilmour, Mason and Wright have proved that they still have what it takes when it comes to musicianship. The only thing that would have made this DVD even better was if Roger Waters could have put aside his differences and been a part of this concert.

The bonus features of this DVD are simply amazing. This is a must-have for any Pink Floyd fan or a music fan in general.

David Gilmour (my personal guitar hero) is amazing to watch. It makes me mad when I have to work hard at playing guitar and he makes it seem so effortless!

Mason and Wright are also given chances to shine (especially the keyboard solo in "Any Colour You Like"!!!!).

When you buy this DVD and get ready to watch it, turn down the lights, turn off the phone, relax, and get ready to be blown away!

4 out of 5 stars Mindcrime at the Moore: the good, the bad, and the ugly........2007-07-08

As a longtime QR fan who had high expectations for OM:II and was a little disappointed I purchased this DVD with a bit less fervor. Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised to find a similar (if not more solid) effort than the Livecrime release of 16 years ago. It absolutely made sense for the band to put together a tour that covered the Mindcrime saga in its entirety; however the prospect of combining what was essentially two separate concerts (along with the visuals) given the fact that these guys are well into their 40's seemed a little far fetched. As mentioned in a previous review, this was indeed a massive undertaking. With that in mind, my assessment of the whole DVD experience was going to be much more forgiving than it was after my first listen to the latest studio release.

My findings-good, bad and ugly.

The good: As I alluded to before the coverage of the original Mindcrime release was the most tight I've heard since 1991. Throw in the theatrics and you have a dynamic that was simply absent on "Live Evolution" and "Art of Live". From the drum corps backing up Scott Rockenfield in Anarchy X to Geoff Tate belting out "Eyes of a Stranger" while bound in a straight jacket Disc 1 is worth the price of admission alone. The band nails every song and sprinkles in some creative improvisation ("Electric Requiem" and "My Empty Room") for good measure. Pamela Moore providing backup/harmony effectively augmented Tate's vox-even though he sounded better than he has in years. Additionally, a more animated Tate and company managed to successfully capture their audience rather than just play for them..a testament to this being more than a rushed swan song. Believe me, once the title track kicks in you'll be held captive as well. The best aspects of "Mindcrime at the Moore" are borne out in Disc 1, which leads to..

The bad- Actually we'll just say not-so-good. Disc 2 covers the latest release and it can be safely said that Mindcrime II is best experienced live. The passion that was so prevalent in part I does indeed carry over into this segment, however it became quite apparent a few songs into the set that this was headed towards anticlimax. After energizing the crowd for 90 minutes the show seemed to lose some steam-an unfortunate eventuality given an abrupt end to the frenetic pace after "A Murderer?". Even with a sound that was as true to (or better than) the studio release, the second installment of the Mindcrime saga live just didn't have the substance to close the deal. Fortunately QR remedied the crowd's hunger with "Walk in the Shadows" and "Jet City Woman" as encores.

And, the ugly: As much as I appreciate the many faces of Mike Stone I just couldn't digest his look for this show. His Plasmatics-era mohawk and recurrent virtuoso-esqe solo fills seemed quite out of place. Fortunately he holds his own along with Michael Wilton...which didn't happen on "Live Evolution". Another forgettable moment was the live rendition of "The Chase", sans Ronnie James Dio. Actually, neither Tate nor Dio were present on stage-just a very amateurish and almost laughable video that accompanied the band throughout the number. Understandably, RJD was only able to perform live at the LA show (which is included as a bonus feature on Disc 2) but the video could've been approached very differently (i.e. have a more impassioned Dio on screen with Tate singing live in the foreground).

In sum, given a few shortcomings it can't be overstated that this is without a doubt their finest live release. Considering how this aging band covered material not only conceived almost 20 years ago but comprising the finest metal concept album in history this performance is a must to watch and own.

4 Stars for sure.

5 out of 5 stars must have for your music/dvd library.......2007-07-06

simply put - you HAVE TO own this DVD if you even marginally call yourself a Queensryche fan.

The music is tight and they sound as good as they did 20+ years ago (well, you can tell Geoff has aged a little, but not that much)

32 songs for $22! I ripped the audio from my DVD's and put it on my ipod, it is that good of a production. My only complaint is that the bass player looks bored and doesn't really get into the music.

Pamela Moore is awesome in her role of Sister Mary. Even Ronnie James Dio makes an appearance!

5 out of 5 stars Great saga complete together, the best way to experience it........2007-07-05

This is the next best thing to seeing them live, and seeing the queenryche sagas of Mindrime played back to back. Unfortunately, they didn't get them squeezed on one DVD, so you have to stop and change discs unlike a live continuous show, but thats ok. Well worth the money. Its Livecrime to the max, now with essentially Livecrime 2 expanded on the masterpiece. Must own for a Ryche fan, and definitely should be purchased first before the CD if on limited funds.

5 out of 5 stars Simply...Ryche at thier best........2007-07-04

I have had the privledge of seeing Queensryche 2 years in a row now. And I remember "Mindcrime 1" tour. This DVD is awsome. Great to see the Ryche in top form. Plus the bonus with Ronnie James Dio doing "The Chase." is excellent. This is a must have for true Ryche fans.

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Live DVD Production !!.......2007-07-04

For those of you who do not have the DVD, GET IT, particularly if you saw the live show in person during the OMC I and II tour. It is a fantastic, PROFESSIONALLY captured and edited spectacular, not to mention a high-quality audio track to match!

Seriously, I have watched several "live" DVD concerts, but this production beautifully blends the live performance, terrific camera angles and imagery, and post-production editing into what can truly be called a visual and audio masterpiece. It is meticulous and detailed, capturing the exciting pulse of a live performance without compromising the cinematic story-telling that this saga requires.

And let's face it, you absolutely cannot enjoy this DVD (despite all I have mentioned so far) unless Geoff Tate and the band delivered musically. Guess what? THAT'S THE BEST PART!! Tate sounds terrific! For the first half, he delivers a powerful, spot-on performance that is every bit as good as Operation LiveCrime! What chops he still has! Cripes!

And the band is rock solid --- tight technically and impressive melodically. Wilton and Stone are superb, and the underpinnings of bass and drums are phenomenal, to boot.

I saw the show in Baltimore and loved it. The DVD is even better! It is a worthy chronicle of a band and a story that just won't quit. I hated waiting so long for this thing, but now I am fulfilled.

Go out and get it. If you rate it less than a five, you're wound way too tight, dude.

A really fun concert dvd of BMG. Their cover of Baba O'Reilly (from The Who) is the highlight of the show. Fun to watch and amazing when you think about that the Blue Men themselves are playing pvc pipe for the most part.

This is a great DVD to watch with family and friends. We had a whole living room full of people and we all started playing along using whatever we could find to make some noise. Very inspirational to anyone interested in percussion.

Description

Yes is one of the most innovative and successful rock bands of all time with a career that now spans five decades. In 2003 the band made their first appearance at the Montreux Festival, despite having a long association with the town itself (they recorded there frequently in the seventies). It was a triumphant night and is regarded by both the band members and fans as probably the finest Yes gig ever to be filmed. It has been much in demand and is now finally cleared for release.

4 out of 5 stars Tsongas Is Better.......2007-06-19

I own every Yes DVD to date... Montreux is good, but not as good as I hoped it would be. I may have over-hyped it a bit in my mind. I was really looking forward to this release which is basically the same concert that is contained in the Yesspeak "concert slideshow." Unfortunately the sound on this release isn't much better than the Yesspeak version. In addition to the audio letdown, the band just didn't seem to have the energy as they did on the 35th Anniversary Tour. I haven't seen or heard a Yes recording yet that does justice to how powerful and energetic they were playing at the end of the 35th tour. Steve plays well, but doesn't really get animated playing until the end of the concert. In Tsongas, he actually looks like he wants to be there and really rocks. Jon's voice seemed off a bit, they hardly showed Chris, Rick looked good but was back in the mix, and Alan was hardly audible. The recordings of "Southside" and "And You and I" aren't as good as on Tsongas either.

That being said, there are many positives to this recording. "Don't Kill the Whale" was energetic, the solos are fantastic (I've seen Steve play "To Be Over" several times live, and this is the best I've heard), and Awaken is extremely powerful, especially at the end.

All in all it is certainly worth buying, but I would recommend that you buy Tsongas, Symphonic, and An Evening of Yes first if you are looking for the best overall product.

3 out of 5 stars Another Sonic Disappointment from Yes.......2007-06-17

Ok - the good stuff: very well filmed and edited. The video looks beautiful. For you guitar guys and Steve Howe fans; you will love this DVD as Steve's audio off his guitar is the most obvious in the mix and there is more than ample close-up video of his fretboard work.

Now the bad: the audio. Now I have to admit that this is far from the worst Yes DVD from an audio perspective - but that may not be saying much. They seem to have a knack for sub-par audio mixing on their DVD's - in fact, most of them sound terrible given modern standards. So while this is an improvement over their past releases, it still falls far short of what a discerning audiophile and Yes concert goer would like to hear. As mentioned, Steve's guitar is quite prominent with every note fully audiable. Jon's vocals would be next in audiability, but somehow they lack a certain clarity. Rick's keys are set back quite a ways, but still discernable. Somewhat further pushed down in the mix are Alan's drums, and bringing up the rear is Chris' bass. In fact, overall bass is sadly lacking, making the whole affair sound thin. They must like this sort of mix, as far to many of their DVD's can be summed up the same way. But the dynamic range is nothing close to the balance that their live performance has.

I can't think of another band that has released more DVD's than Yes. Other than the studio-based acoustic package, I'm still waiting for one of them to sound decent. Maybe I'm too picky.

(My playback system: Dunlavy SC-IV/a mains, Dunlavy HRCC center, Lexicon MC-12B processor, Theta Dreadnaught amp, Velodyne subs)

4 out of 5 stars ...eh, and who is so currently a standing member of this band now(that I should even bother getting this)???.......2007-06-10

aside from Chris Squire and Jon Anderson this band has had more turnover than a bycycle shop with a free tune-up denighal of service. If it's another Trevor Rabin tant, I think I'll pass(you can tell -I- 've been keeping up with the band!). Though odviously the most professionally talented of the quintet, thu Trev-miester was also the most overbearing. Showed more of the rigid thinking in "Talk" than the others. Big Generator, 90125(90125,though, for the most part a great albumn) showed less and less of the spirited free form and more of rythmn and overdone studio recording. These three I call the "Trevor Rabin-yes's Albumns"(no! not his 3 solos, his Trevor-Yes's!). Union I call a mess. I have been rebuying the old early albumns(Up to and including Drama) for the extras(and a lot of it too! worth the pennies of argument...) though the ones afterward I find over produced and underpassionate, though Owner of a Lonely Heart and "Love will find away" are some of the better quality of the otherwise uppity-coffee house "I'm an avid 80's rock(and roll) fan" pop art blandness. Jon just hates us ya know! fire the jester, take the stand, Chris, Howe, and Jon!

5 out of 5 stars Simples Yes.......2007-05-31

Yes, uma das bandas mais homogeneas dos anos 70 que influenciaram grandes bandas. Existem muitos concertos desta banda, mas este é em Montreux ...

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderfull Montreux surprise for Yes fans!..........2007-05-23

Although the concert start with the playing of a little bit slower (almost imperceptible) tempo version of the magnum opus "Siberian Khatru", The real thing about this wonderfull concert is that those gifted musicians still have the musical skills, the "magic" to play with gracious and dignity, that still keeps me intriged about the thing of age because although the faces of band members reflects some kind of tireness they play really in an emotional way, and Steve Howe smiles again!... By the way, this concert is far much better than the 35th aniversary concert TSONGAS (But the live version of "South Side Of The Sky" is a must!). In Montreux they play again "Heart Of The Sunrise" with a little lack of sound shades: YES is the only band that I've listened twice live that use a lot of sound shades to create volume contrasts and make their music more emotional. the last time that I remember have seen this song in a video was in the 1990 YES UNION concert DVD with the original line up members plus Bill Bruford, Trevor Rabin and Tony Kaye. By the other side, about the kind of tracks approach programme, the great thing is that the band played basically all the Fragile album:

1. "Roundabout", 2. "We Have Heaven", 3. "South Side Of The Sky", 4. A "keyboard solo" by Rick Wakeman, 5. A "guitar solo" by Steve Howe ("To Be Over" and "Clap"); 6. "Long Distance Runaround", 7. "The Fish" (Now a more evoluted track with musical sketches of "Sound Chaser", "Tempus Fugit" and "Silent Wings Of Freedom" in bits), and 8. "Heart Of The Sunrise".

* The programme only missed the Alan White's drum solo (as a remembering of the former Bill Bruford track "Five per cent for nothing").

About the technic questions, the sound is great and the quality image has a perfect definition. This concert was part of the tour of the last studio album MAGNIFICATION, whose orchestral tracks "In The Presence Of" and "Magnification", were played here with well intrumented keyboards by genious creative Rick Wakeman. The rest of the programme is supported by two CLOSE TO THE EDGE tracks ("Siberian Kathru", "And You & I"); one GOING FOR THE ONE track ("Awaken"); one TORMATO track ("Don't Kill The Whale"); the classic easy listening song "I've Seen All Good People" and one acoustic piece played by Jon Anderson: "Show Me". I'd wish that the song "SILENT WINGS OF FREEDOM" had been played too... may be in the next one. Anyway, This concert is a real beauty with an inexplicable kind of hidden emotion in it that will stand a little bellow of the totemic KEYS TO ASENCION DVD. So LIVE AT MONTREUX is truly a surprise and a must for every real YES Fan!...

What started as a suggestion for Paul Simon to play a concert in New York's Central Park blossomed, on September 19, 1981, as a full-blown Simon and Garfunkel reunion after an 11-year hiatus, and now proves a priceless snapshot of two of America's greatest folk-rock performers. (It's also the rightful bookend to Simon and Garfunkel's acoustic Live from New York City, 1967.)

Performed with a who's-who of East Coast session aces before a record-setting crowd of half a million fans, The Concert in Central Park finds its stars just shy of their 40th birthdays and very much in their primes, their voices sweet and pure and their playing relaxed, perfectly in tune and in synch. The show features a mix of S&G and solo Simon tunes, including all the songs that appear on the CD, with the addition of a reprise of "Late in the Evening" and the first live performance of Simon's "The Late Great Johnny Ace." This is classic material from start to finish, 87 minutes of unmitigated beauty. --Michael Mikesell

5 out of 5 stars the concert to own!.......2007-06-08

This reunion concert with Simon and Garfunkel in Central Park, recorded in 1981, was historically, a very important event for many of their fans fortunate enough to be present for the performance, as well as the rest of us who caught it on PBS, as part of one of their more successful pledge drive efforts. Though, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel had split over artistic and [no doubt] personality differences, this concert really was the bridge made over their troubled waters, to reacquaint two old friends together through the music that had brought them so close in the past.

Even twenty-six years later, you can feel the real passion that these two men have for music, and for the best songs from their repertoire. Paul Simon penned many great hits, during his time spent recording with Garfunkel in their musical partnership. They include songs like "Bridge Over Troubled Water," their interpretation of the traditional folk ballad, "Scarborough Fair," "America," "Mrs. Robinson," "Wake Up Little Susie," and a slew of other tunes. Those two have a haunting quality to their performances that truly sounds like a throwback to the era of minstrels from the middle ages, yet, the arrangements fuse "old" together with "new," sustaining their fanbase that they acquired in the 1960s, as well as newer listeners drawn in by the more modern arrangements. You will truly enjoy this concert, and its a great recording that you could easily watch over again numerous times, without losing interest.

Looked like a great concert, but this duo was sadly let down by the sound men. Their voices were largely drowned out by the music and background noise.

Wow-- DVD at home--with Bose sound sure beats the 8 tracks and wedge speakers in my 69 Mustang. Beats the turntable and nickles taped to the needle and giant home made speakers (thank you Radio Shack). Always liked Queen-- this is my first Queen DVD and it is great. Nice variety. Freddie whips up the crowd.... goose bumps. Program the DVD to play REPEAT. I like this better than vinyl-- Night at the Opera.
Another One Bites the Dust-- good for pregame in the locker room.

Sparks fly in this video of the all-star concert from Berlin's equivalent of the Hollywood Bowl in July 2006, part of the World Cup festivities. The electricity is generated by the all-star trio of tenors Placido Domingo and Rolando Villazon and soprano Anna Netrebko in a program of operatic and vocal favorites. The crowd estimated at 20,000 eats it all up, and so will home viewers who'll relish the prospect of great singers performing great music.

Domingo is his usual self, still remarkable at an age when most tenors have called it quits. He sings with intensity and a voice undimmed by the passing of time. Domingo's duets with his partners are notable for his acute phrasing, the highlights being the first-act love duet from Verdi's Otello with Netrebko's gorgeous lyric Desdemona and the ravishing duet with Villazon from Bizet's The Pearlfishers, in which he takes on the baritone role. Netrebko seems slightly stiff at first but loosens up as the evening progresses, but she's in excellent voice, with luminous pianissimos most sopranos wish they could emulate. Her Puccini arias are beautifully sung, and she even offers a Franz Lehar aria and a charmingly accented duet, "Tonight," from West Side Story with Villazon. But if anyone can be said to steal the show it's Villazon, a singer in perpetual motion, who brings the house down with a version of Rossini's La Danza full of dash and brio. There's a lot more, from Spanish songs to arrangements of the Brindisi from La traviata and Lehar's Expert accompaniments are by the Orchestra of the Deutschen Opera of Berlin under the baton of conductor Marco Armiliato, who also offers several well-shaped operatic overtures and intermezzos and joins in the fun during the unbuttoned encores. Too bad the video direction doesn't match the on-stage proceedings. The production team apparently suffers from camera nervosa, the cameras swooping above the scene, then to floor level, now up, now down, now in close-up, now in long shot, searching for novelty while distracting from the music. There are also misjudged cuts, jumps, and angles. This hyperactivity doesn't seriously mar enjoyment but it is a blemish on a terrific concert. --Dan Davis

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!.......2007-06-26

Without getting too wordy at the expense of leaving something out, let me just say that this concert is an absolute delight. Domingo, Netrebko and Villazon complement one another perfectly - a great matchup of stars who also receive very strong backing by the Orchester der Deutschen Oper Berlin under the baton of Marco Armiliato. If you watch this on a home theater system as opposed to not being able to watch it live, the DTS surround really adds to the impact of these performances, not to mention the excitement that stirs up the audience throughout. Very highly recommended!

This show at the Waldbühne by three of the greatest singers in the world today MUST NOT BE MISSED!

It is almost like being there with the other 20,000 people who enjoyed this immensely.

Please, get this.

5 out of 5 stars Magic.......2007-06-13

Once in a while, everything works. This is a magnificent success, for all three artists. My thought when it began was that this event would be the passing of the torch from Domingo to Villazon, the best of the the recent tenors to today's best, with today's best soprano thrown in for good measure. In part,it is that. But in the whole, it is much more. Domingo started slowly, but by the end of things, he had shed 3 decades and a little coarseness- everybody on the stage was in their 30's and madly in love with life. These are three colleagues, consumed with music and the need to share it, and brought to new heights by each other's art and spirit. It was thrilling to see the audience brought deeper into the magic of the moment with each new aria, duet, and, finally, with the two encore trios- they were swaying, dreaming, and realizing that they were now part of this magic, and part of a night that they would always remember.
At the end, the two tenors were playfully vying for the beautiful soprano, but it never seemed cliched or sexist, even when Placido went so far as to pinch her chin. The feminist wars of the proceeding generations are over. Anna Netrebko had nothing to prove. There was no question, in her mind or in ours, that she was sharing the stage with her equals, effortlessly and joyfully, displaying a power and confidence the match of any I have seen before, male or female.
However, to me, the revelation of the night was Rolando Villazon. I saw him for the first time live in the Los Angeles production of La Traviata last September, where he stole the show from Rene Fleming, and convinced me that he is the best tenor around. But he is more than that. He has the potential to be, if he isn't already, the best tenor since Edison's invention of the phonograph. Just as Callas melded music and drama last century, the public will be not be able to accept a singer who is careless or incomplete in his art, or lacking in passion, after they have experienced this young tenor.
I could go on, but I will close by commenting on only one number that he sang so successfully that it was brought it to a new level: Rosini's "La Danza". He sang it with the exuberance and abandon of the young Mario Lanza, the intelligence and finesse of the great Jussi Bjoerling, and a musicality and personality so complete- so much his own in style and intensity, that he left all of the dozens of past performances I have heard of this old warhorse trailing in his dust. I feel as if I have never really heard "La Danza" before this incredible performance, done with a naturalness that both enchants and draws you in. From the sound of the audience, I am not the only one who was enchanted.

5 out of 5 stars Soprano wanted for theft!.......2007-05-25

"The Berlin Concert" with Domingo, Netrebko and Villazon features singing in five languages - Italian, French, German, Spanish and English - and a nice mix of orchestral and vocal music. The low point of this DVD is Domingo's appearance: he looks like Sadam Hussein's twin brother. The terrific high point is the set of individual and ensemble encores. Here opera fans get to see a soprano steal the show from TWO tenors! What's not to like about that?

3 out of 5 stars Who killed the knight?.......2007-06-05

Medieval paintings and a chess game seem like unlikely murder components, but they set off the whole plot of art puzzle/murder mystery "Uncovered." The adaptation of Arturo Perez/Reverte's novel is picturesque and has some good acting, but suffers from a total lack of suspense when it comes to whodunnit.

Art student Julia (Kate Beckinsale) is delighted when an X-ray of a old painting shows a Latin inscription: "Who killed the knight?" The trio in the painting includes a medieval duke, his young wife, and a French knight who was pretty obviously having an affair with the wife. With the help of her cheating ex-boyfriend and mysterious chess prodigy Domenec (Paudge Behan), Julia unravels the question of who killed the knight -- and why the picture was altered after it was finished.

But that isn't the end -- Julia's ex-boyfriend turns up dead in the shower, and the kindly old owner of the painting dies within days. And with each death, a corresponding ivory chess piece is left on Julia's doorstep. As brutal heirs and conniving art dealers scrabble for the painting, Julia tries to unravel who is behind the killings -- before black queen takes white queen...

"Uncovered" is more interesting as a clever art puzzle than a murder mystery, set in Barcelona's sunny colourful streets and ancient castles. It is genuinely fascinating to see the hidden meanings of the chess game and its hidden meanings, as well as the politics of Burgundy versus France. This part is intriguing, intelligent, and genuinely has an element of classical mystery.

Unfortunately, it sags when it turns into a murder mystery (with a bit of nudity thrown in), loosely tied into the medieval murder with the use of chess pieces. The murderer's identity is glaringly obvious even before he's killed anyone, and the campy, shrieky finale suffers because you already know who he is. Even the callous heirs to weren't enough to throw off the scent.

This was only Kate Beckinsale's second major role, so perhaps she can be forgiven her mediocre performance. She's middling most of the time, and occasionally lapses into hysterical crying. John Wood is a scene-stealer as the devoted gay guardian Cesar, backed by Sinéad Cusack as a catty aging party-girl and Michael Gough as an ailing aristocrat. No, I don't know by British actors are playing a slew of Spaniards, but they do a good job.

"Uncovered" is an intriguing art mystery, but it trips over itself in the second half when it becomes a mysteryless mystery. If it weren't for that, it would be simply brilliant.

2 out of 5 stars Special Features not included.......2007-05-15

This picture is based in the famous spanish novel "La Tabla de Flandes" from Arturo Perez Reverte (Alatriste), but the picture is boring, with slow and bad acted characters. This particular DVD doesn't include subtitles, not even spanish nor english. In this case the box announce this special features, watch out with this problem.

THIS MOVIE WAS VERY BORING!IF YOU LIKE TO PLAY CHESS-YOU'LL LIKE THIS MOVIE.THIS IS A MYSTERY BASED ON BEING SOLVED BY FINDING CHESS PEICES,AND THEIR CLUES.

5 out of 5 stars Paudge Behan Fans Attention.......2007-03-08

Uncovered is one of Paudge Behan's earlier movies and as in all of his films he is wonderfull add a very young Kate Beckinsale and you have a great film. This is one you have to watch to appreciate and I think once you have seen it you will want to watch it again. So grab a glass of wine sit back and enjoy you are in for a surprising treat.

3 out of 5 stars Tepid murder mystery.......2007-02-18

In "Uncovered", Kate Beckinsale plays a woman living in Barcelona Spain restoring a very valuable 500 year old painting of two men playing chess and a woman watching them. She discovers an inscription on a layer of paint underneath the top layer that translates to "who killed the knight". The painting's owner tells her the story of an ancestor being murdered and he may be the knight in question. She discovers the mystery centers on the game of chess being played in the painting and enlists the help of a young chess genius to deconstruct the game and predict upcoming moves. As she investigates the mystery however, people around her begin to die.

"Uncovered" is a trite mystery. It's enjoyable to watch to an extent, but it has a very annoying soundtrack and the acting isn't particularly good, even Beckinsale in an obviously early role for her (and her haircut is awful). There is no real suspense to anything that happens. The chess game in the picture being at the center of the mystery was interesting as was comparing the moves to what happened 500 years ago and what was happening now, but the movie as a whole never grabs you completely. The tone is a little too light and airy for a murder mystery.

Recorded on a single night in June 2000, In the Flesh: Live is a thrilling live testament to the strength of Roger Waters's peculiar artistic vision. Backed by a crack ensemble of both fresh and seasoned players, the former Pink Floyd songsmith powers through Floyd classics, underserved relics, and highlights from his spotty solo career. The man is in great shape, physically and musically, and he obviously has a blast playing live.

What of the axe work? Accept the fact that Waters and Floyd guitarist David Gilmour no longer play together, and you'll appreciate stand-ins Snowy White and Doyle Bramhall II--and the degree to which they honor the parts and solos immortalized by Gilmour. (See the lavish but impersonal Pulse for a healthy dose of Gilmour's Floyd.) The Dolby Digital 5.1 surround mix is massive, presenting both the music's inherent spaciousness and the favorable acoustics in Portland, Oregon's Rose Garden Arena. The DVD's 18-minute documentary is long on downtime and short on musical interplay. Any way you cut it, though, this is a must for Floyd fans and a real treat for lovers of arty, intelligent rock. --Michael Mikesell

Songs: In the Flesh, The Happiest Days of Our Lives, Another Brick in the Wall Part 2, Mother, Get Your Filthy Hands Off My Desert, Southampton Dock, Pigs on the Wing Part 1, Dogs, Welcome to the Machine, Wish You Were Here, Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts 1-8), Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun, Breathe (In The Air), Time, Money, The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking Part 11 (5:06 am? 5 out of 5 stars Wow -Absolutely amazing.......2007-05-14

When I bought this DVD I didn't really know what to expect from Waters, being more of a David Gilmour fan I was a bit skeptical, but totally blown away nonetheless. This is a must have for anyone who loves the late seventies/early eighties Floyd. I hate to admit this, but I actually enjoyed it even more than PULSE.

It is a pretty decent concert- sound and video pretty good- its a keeper

5 out of 5 stars Pink Floyd: Uncovered.......2007-04-27

Being a fan of Pink Floyd's music in the early 80's, this DVD was a real treat! For the first time, seeing Roger Waters singled out was a real eye opener for me. I had only really thought of Pink Floyd as a sum of its parts; not as unique musicians coming together to be a part of something very special.
Seeing Roger on stage, behind the scenes and interacting with his fellow band mates made everything seem more "real", better understood.
I whole-heartedly recommend this DVD for those who are only even partially interested in Pink Floyd's music. The sound quality is unbelieveable and the video quality is at least as good.

"Shine on, you crazy diamond!"

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing!!!!.......2007-04-12

Waters the Pink Floyd's Soul & Brain comes back with this amazing concert, a real masterpiece, the only sad thing is that is not a DTS sound in the DVD but that's not a impediment to enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2007-02-10

WOW, fantastic sound, entertaining show, polished performers and those wonderful Pink Floyd songs. Personally, I really enjoyed hearing Roger's solo work. My favorite was 'Amused to Death' but 'The Bravery of Being Out of Range' has an upbeat energy and is done very well with a better sound than the released 'faux' concert version on the original album. After seeing Roger's 2006 tour I now think the visuals were the only weakness in this DVD but the true fan will love it and look forward to his next release from The Dark Side of the Moon tour. Here's to hoping!

Amazon.com essential video

Like perky Kathie Lee Gifford, Barney, the ubiquitous magical purple dinosaur, can elicit violent hatred and fierce loyalty. You're likely to get the latter from the average toddler, weaned on the inexplicably popular (to some) PBS series. Parents may want to first teach their children the original classic songs before they're invariably introduced to Barney and his lyric-altering renditions. (By now countless children think "This Old Man" is the "Barney I Love You" song.) This 50-minute video, never seen on television, focuses on Baby Bop (Barney's yellow baby dino friend), envious and curious about school. Barney and friends Ashley, Hannah, Robert, and Jeff offer to play school, with Baby Bop as teacher. Their songs include the Barney versions of "The Alphabet Song," "One, Two, Buckle My Shoe," "The Itsy Bitsy Spider," "Where Is Thumbkin?", and more. Let's Play School! offers a gentle introduction to toddlers curious about preschool and may waylay any apprehensions. With its emphasis on how school is both fun and educational it also entices its youngest audience by showing that Ashley, Hannah, Robert, and Jeff (who are about 8 or 9) represent those awe-inspiring older kids. They like school. Therefore, it can't be that bad. And neither is this video's ultimate message. --N.F. Mendoza

Description

With a little help from Barney and a big imagination, the children enjoy a fun-filled day at "Baby Bop's School" where every lesson includes unexpected surprises. Join Ashley, Hannah, Robert and Jeff as they sing an alphabet song, read in Baby Bop's book center, eat macaroni and cheese, and bounce into gym class. When the day is just about done, settle in with Baby Bop and her "blankey" for an afternoon nap. It's an unforgettable day of learning and laughter.

5 out of 5 stars Best Barney Video.......2007-05-12

I bought this for my 2 1/2 year who has alot of other Barney videos and this one is the best. I personally don't like watching Barney but both of kids do. I have to say "lets play school" is the most educational and that's what's most important. They go over shapes, colors, abc's and my toddler really participates and follows along. This video definitley makes learning fun. Even my 8 yr old watches it. She says it the only Barney video she likes since she has outgrown the rest. :)
