If hard rock's your game, then the Cult will surely be a name near the top of your list--and this 86-minute concert will not disappoint. This band is a whole that's greater than the sum of its parts; featured members Ian Astbury (vocals), Billy Duffy (guitar), and Matt Sorum (drums, late of Guns n' Roses) are not especially distinguished musicians, but the Cult perform with an energy that's irresistible throughout this DVD's 17 songs, drawn from their long career. What's more, the performance is straightforward and unpretentious, as is the video, which mixes in some black-and-white and grainy color shots along with the principal color photography. They may be preaching to the choir here, but if the crowd who gathered to hear the Cult at Los Angeles's Olympic Auditorium is any indication, that choir's in heaven. DVD extras include some 25 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage. --Sam Graham

By any rational measure, Alan Parker's cinematic interpretation of Pink Floyd: The Wall is a glorious failure. Glorious because its imagery is hypnotically striking, frequently resonant, and superbly photographed by the gifted cinematographer Peter Biziou. And a failure because the entire exercise is hopelessly dour, loyal to the bleak themes and psychological torment of Roger Waters's great musical opus, and yet utterly devoid of the humor that Waters certainly found in his own material. Any attempt to visualize The Wall would be fraught with artistic danger, and Parker succumbs to his own self-importance, creating a film that's as fascinating as it is flawed.

The film is, for better and worse, the fruit of three artists in conflict--Parker indulging himself, and Waters in league with designer Gerald Scarfe, whose brilliant animated sequences suggest that he should have directed and animated this film in its entirety. Fortunately, this clash of talent and ego does not prevent The Wall from being a mesmerizing film. Boomtown Rats frontman Bob Geldof (in his screen debut) is a fine choice to play Waters's alter ego--an alienated, "comfortably numb" rock star whose psychosis manifests itself as an emotional (and symbolically physical) wall between himself and the cold, cruel world. Weaving Waters's autobiographical details into his own jumbled vision, Parker ultimately fails to combine a narrative thread with experimental structure. It's a rich, bizarre, and often astonishing film that will continue to draw a following, but the real source of genius remains the music of Roger Waters. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Birth of a fan.......2007-07-09

Back in the day, when I was in high school, I absolutely could not stand Pink Floyd with the exception of one song (Wish You Were Here). When tracks came across the radio I just tried not to listen and couldn't understand they hype.
Then for reasons I can't recall, my girlfriend (later my wife) and I went to see The Wall when it released at the theater. I sat, mesmerized and staring at the screen. To see the movie is to hear the entire album set from start to finish and the movie put it all in context. The thing I was missing before, I understood now. The music of Pink Floyd is put together in albums and if you don't listen to them that way they are disconnected and just don't make sense.
Now I was hooked and started to listen to PF albums instead of individual cuts. I bought the cassette tape (hi-tech back then), wore it out, wore out a backup copy, wore out another tape and years later bought the CD set. Today I'm buying the DVD and can't wait to experience it all again.
Bottom line, the movie is dark, it is disturbing, and it is terribly awesome. Pink Floyd played the music of the insane. Maybe it is the insane who still play the music of Pink Floyd. In any case, I can't wait to introduce my 15 year-old son to it. Wonder if his jaw will drop like mine did?

3 out of 5 stars Imagine this film done by Ridley Scott........2007-05-11

I remember first time I watched this film in movie theatre when it was released to the first theatrical events, I left the room really disappointed. I felt that Floyd had lost one great opportunity of creating a masterpiece of images and music. By that time we all were still under the impact of Pink Floyd's "The Wall" album a real masterpiece and there was a great expectation about the film, but I have to confess, I had an insight that it wasn't to happen and why I affirm this, because one of the worst experiences I have ever had in my life was my decision of watching the worst film of all times, a film called "Fame" or "Infamous if you like", and guess who was the director of this ridiculous film, yes Alan Parker, so I couldn't expect nothing better from this guy really. Can you all remember good films this guy has been done? Well, no, so do I! It was really a disaster this choice, but how we cannot change what happened, I only can give three stars for the few really good moments this film has, like that of "Goodbye blue sky" and I'm sure this great moments is much more because of the music than the image itself, no, one thing we have to say and recognize "the work of Gerald Scarfe is a real work of genius" he was with Pink Floyd since the creation of the fantastic "The Wall" artwork. Can you all imagine if this film had been done by Ridley Scott with the help of Gerald Scarfe, wow, simply no comments... It would have been a truly masterpiece!

3 out of 5 stars A one hour thirty minute music video.......2007-04-03

And not a great one, by any measure. While I'm sure the Pink Floyd fan boys will slobber all over this and proclaim its genius, the truth is that it's really pretty boring. Random trivial war images, check. Random trivial teen angst and rebellion images, check. Random trivial drug lifestyle images, check. Random trivial imagery of fascist oppression. Hooray! It's paint by numbers anti-establishment. FIGHT THE INSTITUTION! I guess this explains why Pink Floyd zealots have a long standing reputation of excessive drug use, you'd have to be toasted in order to find brilliance here. No dialogue and a non-linear story line makes it so the film is really nothing but a long music video, which like most videos depends on symbolic imagery, and we learn that film isn't Roger Water's medium. Instead of four or five music videos (which is how it would probably be done today) from a solid album, they made one huge video from a concept album. Actually a great idea and quite progressive for the time. But it's still boring. I guess if I'm pressed to say something truly positive about the film, it set a strong precedent that music videos have the potential, as a medium, to do something very special, above and beyond what the song itself could do. That music videos can be something more than just performance/concert videos. Of course, it just showed the potential, it didn't actualize that potential.

Usually, with any criticism of Pink Floyd, you can expect the usual diatribes from the fan base about how you just don't get it, it's over your head, beyond your grasp, blah blah blah, but the sad truth is, there's just nothing here. It's just plain boring.

There's nothing. Well, except maybe we learn that someone in Pink Floyd has serious mommy issues. And even as the film bores you to tears, the music really is fantastic. In fact the music is so great it really does illustrates how they tried so hard, and fell so far short with the film. Buy the album, forget the film! The music alone salvages three stars for this, the album itself rates much higher.

And really, the flower scene? Just lame.

4 out of 5 stars One Stunning Movie1.......2007-03-22

Pink Floyd's the Wall is not your typical rock concert like Tommy or Jesus Christ Superstar, but is an allegorical story about a rock star who is descending into madness. Each bad event in his life helps to add another "brick" into the wall of insanity that he, Pink, is building around himself to shut out the real world. While Pink is fictional, he embodies in part the story of real-life Pink Floyd member Sid Barrett whose LSD induced behavior ultimately got him removed from the band and elements of the way Roger Waters was was beginning to feel after touring for a long while which led to his writing The Wall.

At turns grim, weird, bloody, violent, a bit sexy, and even a little bit funny, this movie is very compelling to watch even though it's not as easy to understand (for instance, the marching hammers). Yet, the lyrics of the accompanying Pink Floyd music helps to hold everything together so that the sum of the parts is much greater than the individual parts of this movie. I only gave it four stars instead of five because of the letterbox format that cuts away half of the screen if youhave a small TV set. If you had a huge projection screen it would be a different matter. While DVD offers more features, if you want to see the picture in all of its glory, then until a full screen version comes out (if there isn't one already) it's best to get the VHS version.

Product Description

From director John Roecker (Disease is Punishment) comes the outrageous stop-motion animation musical comedy Live Freaky! Die Freaky! Voiced by a legion of alternative rock icons, including Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day) and Tim Armstrong (Rancid/Operation Ivy), the film is about a futuristic nomad who accidentally discovers a copy of Helter Skelter and interprets it as a biblical tome with Charles Manson as the Messiah. Flashing back to 1969, Hadie (Theo Kogan) meets Charlie (Billie Joe Armstrong) after a bad LSD trip and is immediately drawn into his family where they hatch plans to change the world through "music, murder and mayhem." Gleefully pushing the boundaries of good taste, Live Freaky! Die Freaky! also features: actress Asia Argento, Lunachick's Theo Kogan, AFI's Davey Havoc, X's John Doe, The Go-Go's Jane Wiedlin, Benji and Joel Madden of Good Charlotte, and other members of Green Day, Rancid and Blink 182. The soundtrack includes original songs performed by Billie Joe Armstrong and Jane Wiedlin. Tim Armstrong arranged the score and the songs were written by Roddy Bottum (Faith No More/Imperial Teen). DVD extras include: audio commentary with John Roecker and Billie Joe Armstrong, deleted scenes. Behind the scenes: " Making Puppets Speak", "Sountrack rehearsals and recording", "Desert Footage", storyboards, mini bios and trailer.

3 out of 5 stars The plot's been lifted..........2007-05-02

This plot is the same as Aldous Huxley's Ape and Essence, in which from a post nuclear dystopian world emerges new ideals, when a man discovers a movie script entitled "Ape and Essence." Live Freaky: Man finds Helter Skelter in a post nuclear dystopian world and new ideals emerge. Tim Armstrong's awesome though, so I don't hold him accountable for borrowing the plot. At any rate, I don't feel like writing a real review, so tell Amazon it wasn't helpful.

1 out of 5 stars Actually saw it in theatres.......2007-04-27

Honestly, I love cult classics almost as much as I love punk rock and all that. But, this film is horrible. Even Davey Havok couldn't salvage this film. I waited almost 2 years for this to come out in theaters in San Francisco. I ended up seeing it at the same screening as Davey Havok. This is an awful film...and it really dissapointed me. It's nothing but potty jokes and cheap animation. Tim really failed with this one. If you're dying to see it, go rent it.

4 out of 5 stars Cruel.......2007-04-10

Well, it was a big job to make this cartoon! But in some moments it's disgusting to watch - too cruel and blasphemous.
Despite this I'm having fun everytime I watch it especially "Behind The Scenes" videos... It's interesting to watch famous people trying to reveal the characters... :)

3 out of 5 stars Not For the Easily Offended.......2007-03-09

If possible I would have given this movie a 2.5 but a 3 will do. Let me start off by saying that this movie, is well....Freaky. The stop motion animation isn't the greatest but the kind of people that will watch this movie probably won't care. The music is the best part of it, it's also the reason I bought it. It's all star cast includes punkers such a Billy Joe Armstrong, Tim Armstrong, Davey Havok, and many more. The story is pretty much of a man trying to decide if he, being a godless nomad, should worship Charles Manson when he finds the book Helter Skelter.

The story is sub-par and the acting is pretty bad and the script is that filled with gay jokes and swear words. As said before, not for the easily offended. I've had this movie for maybe around a month and I've only watched it twice. Once on my own and once with a friend. It's not something I plan on watching again for lesuire. But it is a fun movie to say you own. So 3 stars. Have a nice day.

5 out of 5 stars Movie Of The Millenium.......2007-02-20

This movie is the absolute best f*!$ing film ever! It's basically a horribly politically incorrect interpretation of the Charles Manson murders, all from The Family's point of view. "Do you have a taste for sex and blood and hate, or really good LSD?" Then this movie is definitely for you! I watch and quote this all the time, and my friends hate me for it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Live DVD.......2007-05-26

The Cult are an amazing rock band, one of the best actually. This dvd showcases how good they are in the live atmosphere. A great addition to anyone's music or Cult collection. ROCK ON!

5 out of 5 stars Where are the poor reviews coming from?.......2007-03-05

I often throw this DVD in during my work-outs, and I love it every time. I know good singing and good playing when I hear it, and Ian's voice is fine- through the whole DVD. No barking. No pitch problems. I've seen them in concert and I only wish the light show and stage were as cool as in this DVD show. The low ratings are few and far between. That should tell you something.

5 out of 5 stars The Cult - Live Cult.......2007-01-22

The DVD is great. If you are a Cult fan this is a must

3 out of 5 stars Be prepared.......2007-01-03

Singer don't sing like on the cd's. He is showing his age. Other than that the show is ok. Don't expect a rocking concert.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible !!!.......2006-11-07

I have been a HUGE Cult fan since the beginning and have quite a collection of CD's and seen some concerts. Read the reviews here and bought this live DVD.

OK now, I am perplexed! How could anybody in their right mind actually write a review stating that Ian even had anything remotely sounding like "voice" left. He barked out of tune for the first 7 songs (all I could stand to listen to) and couldn't hold a note to save his life. It was really sad and I was sad watching it because I love the band and expected at least something remotely decent from him (because he IS the band).

Don't buy this DVD unless the DVD sales possibly go toward Ian's vocal surgery or whatever he needs to get through at least one song without blowing his voice.

As far as the other reviewers here, they either must be blinded (deafened) by their love for the band, can't let go, and/or will support whatever The Cult puts out. Oh well, you guys cost me $20 bucks for a new frisbee/coaster.

Paul Newman and his Butch Cassidy director, George Roy Hill, made a very original comedy in this 1977 story of an over-the-hill player/coach (Newman) for a lousy hockey team who gets results when he teaches his players to get dirty. One of the most hilariously profane movies ever to come out of Hollywood, this is the kind of film that makes its own rules as it goes along. Newman is very good, and while Hill goes for the gusto in terms of capturing the violence of this world, his instinct for comedy has never been sharper. Great support from Strother Martin, Paul Dooley, and the rest. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Slap Shot.......2007-07-04

This wildly profane film is consistently funny, and often side-splitting. And Newman's Reggie adds an element of poignancy; he's a perennial rogue with plenty of charm, but hardly a responsible adult, evidenced by his failed marriage to Francine (Jennifer Warren), for whom he still carries a torch. Veteran character actor Strother Martin makes the perfect weasel as smarmy team manager Joe McGrath, and Andrew Duncan is memorable as a radio announcer with the worst toupee on the planet.

Remember back in the early 1980s when special-effects makeup artists were tripping over themselves to create the next big effect? The Howling boasted a fantastic werewolf transformation scene courtesy of makeup wizard Rob Bottin. Then along came Bottin's mentor, Rick Baker, with his own spectacular effects in this popular horror comedy directed by John Landis. An American Werewolf in London is more of a makeup showcase than a truly satisfying movie, but the film is effectively moody when David Naughton discovers that a wolf attack has turned him into a bloodthirsty lycanthrope. Jenny Agutter plays his love interest (watch out, he bites!), and who can forget Griffin Dunne as Naughton's best friend, an undead corpse who progressively rots away as the plot unfolds? All things considered, it's easy to see why An American Werewolf in London became a modern horror favorite. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best Werewolf.......2007-05-13

For a longtime this was my favourite film of all time, its not anymore, but it is still a genuine classic film, that deserves a place amongst the greatest horror films ever made.

The reasons for this are threefold:
Firstly the special effects by Rick Baker are amazing. Remember this was made 25 years ago, there was no digital effects then, what you see on the screen was either done with make-up or animatronic puppets. Rick Baker won an Oscar for his work on this film in 1982.

Secondly the blend of horror and comedy. If you watch the extras you will hear the director Jon Landis state that the film is not a comedy, although he admits it is funny. Some of the scenes are very funny and this comedy, sometimes black comedy works really well against the horror in the rest of the film. The horror in this film is brilliantly done with the double nightmare sequence being a particular favourite of mine.

Thirdly of course its a love story. The ending to the film is ultimately all about the love story, but once again John Landis confuses our emotions by immediately playing The Marcels great version of Blue Moon over the end credits.

The scene in the Slaughtered Lamb is a direct reference to the multitude of classic Hammer Films that featured a Pub that went silent went our hero entered it. You will spot quite a few well known faces in the Slaughtered Lamb including a fresh-faced looking Rik Mayall.

The extras on this edition are pretty good, with both Rick Baker and Jon Landis having some interesting things to say. Perhaps the most surprising was that Jon Landis wrote the script for this film in 1969. There's also some fascinating stuff on how Rick Baker created the amazing special effects.

Beware of the moon.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent film, and not just for special effects.......2007-03-24

When people talk about this film, many speak of the classic transformation scene. Yes, it was an amazing achievement of special effects. Don't let that distract you, however, from the fact that this was a highly intelligent take on the werewolf genre. David Naughton is excellent as the american student come werewolf, and Griffin Dunne almost steals the movie as the gradually decomposing, but generally pleasant, corpse who continually reappears to his friend. There are classic campy jokes (e.g., when David tries to get arrested as a form of protecting others from his werewolf alter ego) as well as real drama, and an excellent supporting cast. Stay off the moors!

5 out of 5 stars Darkly funny; you'll howl with laughter *wince*.......2007-03-11

OK, I couldn't resist that pun . . .

That said, I have loved this movie for years. Two American boys are hiking across England when they end up at a mysterious inn on a full moon night. Despite warnings, they decide to keep going and get lost on the moors. One is horribly killed (this is a gory, gruesome movie - not for the faint-hearted!) and the other . . . survives. Once he awakens from his coma, he moves in with his sexy nurse and begins to see the badly decomposing corpse of his friend following him around, telling him to kill himself before it is too late. As the bodies pile up, the corpses following him around become quite a group (this is the darkly funny part - I love the dead people - yeah, I'm a sick ******)

Like all traditional werewolf movies, this one ends badly (as in sadly); I always feel SO sorry for werewolves - they have a terrible lot in life. But it is a true classic of the werewolf genre, one I highly recommend to anyone who loves horror, werewolves, monster movies and dark humor.

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece.......2007-02-12

All these years later and it still holds up to this day. John Landis crafted a comedic and horiffic classic with An American Werewolf in London in 1981, forever changing the way werewolf movies, and possibly horror movies in general, are made. The story, if you don't know it by now, finds an American student (David Naughton) surviving a werewolf attack in England. Things get much worse though when he starts seeing his dead friend (Griffin Dunne) informing him to kill himself before the next full moon. Loaded with sharp humor, incredible script work and directing (Landis has never done better), and superb makeup effects by industry legend Rick Baker (many of which still hold up today), An American Werewolf in London is an all time classic that deserves it's legendary status. With a great assortment of DVD extras, and at this cheap price, picking this up is a steal, and it's a crime if you're a horror fan and it's not already part of your collection.

5 out of 5 stars VERY INTERESTING.......2007-02-09

Description

UMD extras include: Deleted Scene, Behind-the-Scenes: "Making Puppets Speak," Behind-the-Scenes "Soundtrack Rehearsals and Recordings," Behind-the-Scenes: "Desert Footage," Trailer

Customer Reviews:

Proving that he may be the most fearless actor of his or any other generation, Harvey Keitel gives an amazing, no-holds-barred performance in director Abel Ferrara's uncompromising 1992 film about a New York cop on the edge of self-annihilation. The film's title is meant to be taken literally: Keitel's character has no redeeming values whatsoever, save for his desperate need for redemption. Leonard Maltin's Movie & Video Guide is correct in calling this an "over-the-top Catholic guilt movie," but it's been made with such conviction that Ferrara and Keitel transcend the sheer unpleasantness of the material to give it a kind of tragic divinity. Here's a character so vile and corrupted that he consumes or re-sells the drugs he confiscates, but when he's assigned to investigate the brutal rape of a nun who refuses to press charges, he feels that this is his opportunity to redeem his rotten soul. Deservedly rated NC-17 due to its rough content and a frontal nude scene that even Keitel's most loyal fans could do without, this film tends to divide viewers into love-it-or-hate-it categories, but few could deny its raw power and the deeply anguished humanity that Keitel brings to his role. Whatever your reaction may be, few would deny this is an unforgettable film. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bad is hardly the word for it.......2007-06-29

Probably no cop ever sunk so low as Harvey Keitel's New York police lieutenant. He is the very personification of corruption and hypocrisy. Addicted to every street drug of note, heroin, cocaine, crack cocaine, which he both snorts and main lines. He chugalugs vodka. He neglects his family, his children. He consorts with prostitutes, two at a time. He goes to crime scenes to steal the drugs or the money. He takes bribes and stops young female drivers and shakes them down for sex.

He is a Catholic that considers the church a racket. He is a cop who solves no crimes, who lets the criminals go free if they pay him. He corrupts not only himself but the entire system of criminal justice. He is appetite incarnate.

But what does him in is his betting on baseball games. It is the year the Mets came from three games down to win the National League championship, and he bet against the Mets. With play by play in the background in scene after scene we are reminded forcibly that the outcome of baseball games is one thing he cannot control, something that he cannot corrupt, and perhaps that is why he bets on the games.

Abel Ferarra's portrait of a man turbo'ed toward hell is one of the better films I have seen recently. It is uncompromising in its cynicism. Keitel's performance is strident and intense, all consuming and depraved. He is a muscle, an artery that throbs. He is a man who will never be satisfied, who will never be fulfilled. His is the very antithesis of the nun who is raped and forgives those who rape her. She is fulfilled with the love of Jesus. But he cannot believe--or rather, what is worse, his belief is corrupted. In the end we see that he does believe in Jesus and the saints but while he cries out that he himself is weak, he blames Jesus.

He meets a fitting end, but I must warn you, this is a disturbing movie and one that will offend.

2 out of 5 stars Not as good as the hype.......2007-06-29

Being a fan of Harvey Keitel, I had to go with my friend's recommendation to see The Bad Lieutenant. However, I was a bit disappointed. Having seen Resevoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, et al, I figured this one would be a good one. But it was basically an hour and a half of pervasive drug use, obsession over baseball games, and flat dialog.

Yes, I understood the idea of him being a filthy low-life who redeems himself, but it could have been written better, and it wasn't as alarming as I was led to believe. The nun rape scene was short and not terribly shocking, and the nude scene other reviewers mentioned was dull and bizarre to say the least. By the end of the movie, you'll be thoroughly tired of him making noises like a goat in heat.

Now, don't get me wrong, Harvey Keitel is an EXCELLENT actor. I LOVE his work. This one just fell a bit flat. For seedy 'underbelly of society' style shock value, I'd rather pull out "Crimes of Passion", or "Kalifornia", quite honestly. ("Crimes of Passion"'s scene with the nighstick, the cop, and the Ivory soap comment is much more vile and shocking than the nun scene here).

It does get a thumbs up for one scene near the end where he's yelling at a Jesus hallucination in the church. It's got quite a visual intensity to it. And for the ladies like myself looking forward to the "Keitel Beefcake Factor", trust me, "The Piano" was a much better bang for your buck. Harvey can polish my piano any time!

5 out of 5 stars Keitel's best performance.......2007-03-12

Only an actor of Keitel's incredible talent can take a character that you don't know whether to hate or pity , that has only bad qualities, goes on an endless spree of degenerate gambling, drug use, sexual devient behavior and police corruption and make them 100% believable and engaging. You can really picture LT as a real person who has lived the way he does in the movie for a long time and is finally hitting comlete rock bottom. A truly masterful performance. Anyone who has known someone whose life is spiraling downward due to addiction can understand the excellent portrayal and the final price LT pays is the unfortunate end that the real world dishes out 95% of the time. This movie doesn't have an incredibly complex plot or meaning but I would somerize the meaning to me as forgiveness for some people can only come after death because there isn't much forgiveness in the real world for the truly lost soul. Bad Lieutenant (he is never given a name) is a truly bad person who no matter how hard they try can not change due to weakness and he pays the price for his weakness. Sounds like a lot of real people to me. Buy it if you enjoy great acting. Keitel rules!!!

3 out of 5 stars I expected better..........2007-01-04

From the director of ''Drllier Killer'' and ''King of New York''...starring Harvey Keitel...supposedly ''shocking and raw''.

Eh.

It isn't a BAD movie, per se...just not a good one, either. The religious aspect and its accompanying imagery wouldn't look out of place in ''Rosemary's Baby'' or ''The Omen'', but in a film from 1992, it comes off too obvious and cheesy. Keitel's performance has its so-aggro-it-comes-off-as-funny moments (shooting the radio, etc.) and some decent drug scenes (I'd guess the randomness of the other characters involved-especially the waifish girl junkie-is on purpose to show how the only connections he has to most people are drugs and gambling.) There are, however, some scenes that are just too overdone (the aforementioned religious imagery) and/or pointless and those are the ones that unfortunately stick out.

If you want something in a ''Taxi Driver'' or ''I Stand Alone'' vein, it's worth renting or even buying cheap/used...nowhere near as good as those two movies, though.

Like Carrie before it, Ginger Snaps uses horror-movie conventions as an inspired metaphor for puberty. When beautiful but reclusive goth teenager Ginger (Katharine Isabelle) is attacked by a monstrous wolf on the eve of her first period, her body starts changing in a big way, as do her suddenly lusty, feral appetites. Director John Fawcett masterfully balances the expectations of teen horror exploitation (blood, bodies, sex, smart dialogue, and good old-fashioned monster-movie scares) with clever black humor and tender sisterly solidarity. Only devoted sister Brigitte (gloomy Emily Perkins) knows the truth, and even as Ginger's abrupt transformation threatens their once unbreakable friendship, bonds of blood and love keep them together: Brigitte disposes of Ginger's victims while searching for a cure. Mimi Rogers costars as their dotty but unexpectedly sensitive mom, ready to sacrifice all to protect her daughter. Blood and blood ties have never been more evocative. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars Hands Down the BEST Werewolf/Horror movie made.......2007-07-03

Let me begin by saying that Im a huge fan of the horror genre. I have read the foundational works of H.P. Lovecraft, Stephen King, Edgar Allan Poe, Mary Shelley and Bram Stoker. I have seen many of the werewolf movies like Howling I & II, American Werewolf in London, Dog Soldiers, Beast of Gauverdan, but none, NONE have come close to the pathos and sheer characterization that Ginger Snaps has. Two girls who are inseparable, struggle with becoming women and undergoing their first menstrual development into womanhood. Both are fascinated with death and live typical ansgsty suburban lives. Both experience first hand the absolute horror of becoming werewolves. Plainly said, this movie takes the metaphor of growing up and turns it upside down. Like Joss Whedon's Buffy, these girls have to confront what it is to be female and what it means to be an outsider.

After renting this movie I have now purchased all 3 of the Ginger Snaps movies. While the second two dont achieve the magnificence of the first, they are worthy of the title (the 3rd is actually a prelude that tells the story set in the 19th century). I highly, highly recommend these movies to enthusiasts of the horror, werewolf and supernatural genre!

5 out of 5 stars A movie worth sinking your teeth into!.......2007-06-01

I haven't really come across any really good werewolf movies since The Howling, An American Werewolf in London, and more recently The Brotherhood of the Wolf and Dog Soldiers. Ginger Snaps was a pleasant surprise in its ability to entertain with the story of two sisters, Brigitte and Ginger being the main players. The two siblings are considered weird by the rest of their peers and share a close bond with each other.Things change when Ginger is bitten one fateful night setting the stage for Ginger's transformation into a werewolf, and complicating life for Brigitte whose sense of loyalty to her sister makes her cover Ginger's tracks and enlist the help of a guy, Sam to help save her sister.
Its fast-paced, and thrilling with scares thrown in for good measure. A competent addition to the werewolf horror genre.

5 out of 5 stars For a werewolf movie i loved it!.......2007-05-13

Most werewolf movies i see are cheesy. For a B-movie this movie had a good storyline. The characters were good. Movie cam fast, in good quality.

4 out of 5 stars A sad story; typical werewolf flick in that matter . . ........2007-03-11

"Ginger Snaps" is an interesting werewolf flick, in that at first we're not quite sure if maybe it isn't just hormones that is making Ginger act so strangely. But her sister soon learns the truth and sets out to try to cure her. I don't want to give too many details - I'm certain other reviewers have - but I will say that I liked this movie. It isn't among my very favorites, but it is a good, solid werewolf horror flick with a few new twists that make it very worthwhile to watch. Like all traditional werewolf movies, it has a terribly sad ending. But if we wanted to laugh, we'd watch "Teen Wolf," now, wouldn't we?

4 out of 5 stars Kind of Makes Me Wish I Had A Sister . . ........2007-01-28

Foremost, I gave this film four stars because the end-product is pretty impressive considering the fairly scant budget (I'm thinking Mimi Rogers probably took about a quarter of that five mil). So, while it is not the quality of higher budget films, it does take some significant risks . . . which is tremedously refreshing.

Both Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle (who play sisters) do a fantastic job with their roles! And, like others said, their chemistry is surprisingly vibrant. Likewise, Kris Lemche (who plays Sam, a young "horticulturalist") is shockingly engaging. (If anything, I'm actually glad to see him in a role which demonstrates his immense talents . . . Final Destination III nearly destroyed his career!!) As far as "the talent" is concerned, there are no "bad" actors here . . . in fact, Mimi Rogers' dedication to this indie-horror was AMAZING! (Her portrayal of a well-intended, but completely oblivious suburban mom was spot-on!)

As others noted, the special effects are, well, not good. BUT, that's okay!! Because special effects do not reside at the heart of this film (who needs another Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow?!) Instead, we have a film which catalogs the (potential) trauma of being an adolescent with striking honesty. And while the comparisons to De Palma's Carrie are legitimate, it is VERY important to note that Carrie's telekinesis was triggered by the onset of menstruation (it was DORMANT, waiting to awake), Ginger's transformation is not the result of a dormant power . . . she is merely a victim of circumstance. I think this is a REALLY important distinction . . . and each are equally as interesting!! Each makes its own statement about adolescence.

Moreover, I appreciate how this film addresses the science behind folklore. This is a new trend in horror . . . and contributes an element of realism to the most unrealistic of situations (We see this is 28 Days Later and in the Dawn of the Dead remake). The idea of "infection" is a very appealing one!! And, the explanation of how the "cures" work, very interesting!!

This film is an overall success. The script is solid, the acting is great, the premise is "smart," . . . the cinematography is adequate at best (but don't let so-so filming deter you!!) It shows the complex bond between women in a respectful way (especially the relationship between the mother and the daughters). If you approach the film as "low-budget horror" I think you will be pleasantly surprised . . .

An enormous asteroid is heading towards Earth and threatens to wipe out all life on the planet! Sound familiar? Since the Cold War nuclear-threat movies played out sometime in the early Nineties, there was a spate of films that found the Earth threatened by H.R. Giger-style aliens or giant rocks from outer space. With a movie like Judgment Day, comparisons to Independence Day and Deep Impact are inevitable. Actually, this direct-to-video release is the more enjoyable, without the insultingly simplistic plot of the former or the heavy-handed chin-rubbing portent of the latter. A boulder crashes into a Peruvian village, obliterating it; it's a mere pebble compared to the whopper that will crash earthward in a couple of days. The military brass opts for a Star Wars-style weapon to destroy it, but the only man who can help make the thing work has been kidnapped by a cult led by religious head-case Mario Van Peebles. Enter the FBI and convict Ice-T, imprisoned for taking revenge on Van Peebles to settle a personal score. The film veers towards being a political thriller, a 'hood movie (with a Coolio cameo), an action film, a buddy movie and old-fashioned sci-fi along the way, but the sum total is a pretty entertaining B-movie that never quite takes itself too seriously. Fans of TV's Barney Miller should enjoy seeing Max Gail getting a migraine as the head of Air Defense Command, Van Peebles is great as the charismatic religious screwball and Ice-T is…well, Ice-T. --Jerry Renshaw

1 out of 5 stars What this movie is missing is Ice-T and Coolio in space.............2005-10-04

Ice-T (Mean Guns, New Jack City) is released from being a convict by female cop Suzy Amis (Firestorm) because religious gospel talking Mario Van Peebles (Baadasssss!, The Hebrew Hammer) has in his capture a scientist, played by Linden Ashby (Mortal Kombat) who can stop a astroied from wiping the planet out. All that's missing is Ice-T and Coolio in space, that would be cool. Seeing them in space, trying to stop the astroid...that would be cool. No, nothing of the sort in this thriller which just doesnt thrill, it gives off bad acting and kills Coolio (Batman & Robin) off in his cameo. Suzy Amis doesnt even look like's she trying, Ice-T is himself and Peebles doesnt even give off enough juice in his role though he has some moments. Also starring Tommy "Tiny" Lister Jr (The Fifth Element, Friday movies). Suffers from being just too boring.

4 out of 5 stars bETTER THAN ARMAGEDDON INDEED..........2005-06-25

Ice-t has done a whole lot of crappy movies but he's a cool dude so whenever he's in a movie the movie gets watchable even if it's a crappy one...

This one is a b-action movie like ice-T has done a whole lot of but this is probably one of the better ones... last ones I saw was POINT DOOM and AIR RAGE and they are ten times worse than this...

About the movie alot of good actors like tiny Lister Jr, Mario van peebles and a not so good actor: don't know her name but its the female cop who has the lead...

I'm not saying this is the best movie ever but it's enjoyable...

4 out of 5 stars SHOOTING STARS.......2005-02-19

Okay, so the back of the DVD box is really misleading, since they show several asteroids hitting NYC, which is erroneous because the asteroid is one big chunk and decimates the San Francisco area. But since packaging isn't worth docking a movie, I'll focus on the film itself. JUDGMENT DAY while not big budgeted like similar DEEP IMPACT or ARMAGEDDON is nonetheless entertaining on its level. Rather than focusing on pyrotechnics involved in destroying the asteroid, we get to focus on FBI agent Suzy Amis (once married to the King of the World James Cameron) and convict Ice T (in one of his more tolerable characterizations) trying to find the one man who can stop the asteroid from obliterating manking (Linden Ashby). But enter religious fanatic Thomas Payne (played rather controlled by Mario van Peebles), who believes the asteroid is God's judgment so he kidnaps the scientist to prevent him from destroying the asteroid. It seems rather odd that there would be only one man capable of affecting such a global catastrophe, but it's Hollywood, man, so anything goes. Director (former actor John Terlesky of Deathstalker II) keeps the pace tight and delivers what you probably would expect from this straight to video release.

4 out of 5 stars THIS IS A MUST SEE MOVIE.......2003-12-17

A TOUGH FEMALE COP [SUZY AMIS] FREES A CONVICT [ICE-T] SO THAT HE CAN HELP HER TAKE DOWN A RELIGIOUS CULT [LEAD BY MARIO VAN PEEBLES] THAT HAVE KIDNAPPED A SCIENTIST [LINDEN ASHBY] THAT MAY BE THE ONLY ONE THAT CAN PREVENT A ASTEROID FROM HITTING THE EARTH. VERY GOOD ACTION MOVIE. IT SORTA COMBINES ELEMENTS OF ''48 HRS.'' AND ''ARMAGEDDON''. THIS IS WORTH BUYING. GO FIND A COPY OF THIS MOVIE AND BUY IT NOW!

Ok, so call me shallow, but I guess I tried to watch this movie a couple years ago, and I found it again the other day on my DVD shelf. I could not figure out how it got there or why I didn't remember much of it. Well, I figured it out pretty quickly. The female lead looks like she forgot to take off ghoul makeup and put on wrinkle cream or any other makeup. I mean seriously she looks so weathered that it pretty much ruins the movie, which otherwise is generally entertaining. I would have preferred looking at a fat lady for 90 minutes to looking at the lines all over her face.
