Judy, Frank & Dean - Once in a Lifetime

Judy, Frank & Dean - Once in a Lifetime

Starring:Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin
Studio: White Star
Product Type: DVD

Editorial Review:
Amazon.com essential video
The title might be a trifle grand for what is essentially a one-hour 1962 TV special--that's been colorized, yet. But Judy Garland is in fine voice, belting out signature tunes like "When You're Smiling" and "The Man That Got Away." Rat Packers Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin are at their unctuous best, with Sinatra at one point casually flicking ash from his cigarette right onto the stage while singing an emotional "I See Your Face Before Me." The patter among the three stars is a bit stiff, but the numbers are all showstoppers, and Garland, especially, is belting in her most over-the-top Carnegie Hall tradition. Her finale, a medley of "Swanee," "Rock-a-bye Your Baby" and "San Francisco" still brings down the house 40 years later. (Trivia alert: the special was directed by a pre-Moonstruck Norman Jewison.) --Anne Hurley

Amazon.com essential video

When it was released during Hollywood's golden year of 1939, The Wizard of Oz didn't start out as the perennial classic it has since become. The film did respectable business, but it wasn't until its debut on television that this family favorite saw its popularity soar. And while Oz's TV broadcasts are now controlled by media mogul Ted Turner (who owns the rights), the advent of home video has made this lively musical a mainstay in the staple diet of great American films. Young Dorothy Gale (Judy Garland), her dog, Toto, and her three companions on the yellow brick road to Oz--the Tin Man (Jack Haley), the Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr), and the Scarecrow (Ray Bolger)--have become pop-culture icons and central figures in the legacy of fantasy for children. As the Wicked Witch who covets Dorothy's enchanted ruby slippers, Margaret Hamilton has had the singular honor of scaring the wits out of children for more than six decades. The film's still as fresh, frightening, and funny as it was when first released. It may take some liberal detours from the original story by L. Frank Baum, but it's loyal to the Baum legacy while charting its own course as a spectacular film. Shot in glorious Technicolor, befitting its dynamic production design (Munchkinland alone is a psychedelic explosion of color and decor), The Wizard of Oz may not appeal to every taste as the years go by, but it's required viewing for kids of all ages. --Jeff Shannon

DVD features
The Wizard of Oz DVD released in 1999 was loaded with extra features, but it's now safe to throw away that version in all its cardboard-package glory in favor of this new two-disc edition. First things first: All the bonus material from the earlier disc is there (with one small exception). That includes the Angela Lansbury-hosted documentary The Making of a Movie Classic; the outtakes and deleted scenes, including Judy Garland's "Over the Rainbow" reprise and the home-movie recording of "The Jitterbug"; the sketches and stills and composer Harold Arlen's home movies; the audio underscores and radio programs; the 1979 interviews with Margaret Hamilton, Ray Bolger, and Jack Haley; and other items too numerous to mention. (Some text introductions to the features have been replaced by narration by Lansbury, for whatever reason.) Brand-new to the 2005 edition is a sharp restoration using Warner's Ultra Resolution process and an accompanying featurette on how it's done. The technicians also discuss how the sound was remixed, though that would have been more effective had it included surround-sound demonstrations (the featurette is in 2.0). Other features on the new set include a commentary track by critic John Fricke supplemented by vintage cast interviews (he offers a lot of trivia, and debunks the myth that Shirley Temple was ever close to getting the Dorothy role); profiles of nine cast members and clips of other movies they appeared in (including Toto); a lightly animated 10-minute storybook again narrated by Lansbury; 2001 and 2005 behind-the-scenes featurettes; and a 1950 Lux Radio Theater broadcast. Oh, and if you were still wondering about the missing material mentioned above--the 1999 disc included one-minute excerpts of three early treatments of The Wizard of Oz. Those excerpts are not included in the two-disc special edition, but the third disc of the three-disc collector's edition includes the complete versions of those treatments and more. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-07-08

This was one of my favorite movies when I was young, so I bought it for my children to watch.

5 out of 5 stars Wizard of Oz.......2007-06-21

What makes this quintessential fantasy musical the immortal spectacle it is has as much to do with the spirited songs (Garland's signature "Over the Rainbow" was nearly cut!) and heel-clicking dance numbers as it does the phenomenal storyline, lavish Technicolor sets, and punchy performances by the entire cast. For sheer entertainment, you can't beat Ray Bolger's rubbery legs, Bert Lahr's boastful bluster, and Margaret Hamilton's frightening green face, not to mention warbling Munchkins, flying monkeys, an Emerald City, and one highly coveted pair of ruby slippers. King Vidor directed the black-and-white Kansas sequences that bookend the film, but Fleming helmed the rest and took sole credit. Amazingly, the film flopped at the box office, but has since become the most beloved children's classic of all time. If ever a wiz there was, The Wizard of Oz is definitely it.

5 out of 5 stars The Wizard of Oz is the greatest movie ever made.......2007-06-18

The Wizard of Oz is the greatest movie ever made, staring the world's best performer; Judy Garland!

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't be happier.......2007-06-18

My DVD arrived on-time, and it is in perfect condition.

5 out of 5 stars Disturbing for a G rated Movie.......2007-06-14

This G rated classic is also pretty disturbing because it's too scary a movie for little kids. It scared the crap out of my mom. I wasn't scared but it disturbed me the racist anti-pilgrim content in it as well as it's loaded with subliminal messages. It's sequel Return to Oz is even more disturbing containing even more subliminal messages. They should've made this animated because the wicked witch scenes are very unholy and not kosher, not quite on a level with The Exorcist but like The Holwing II. Too campy for me to be genuinely disturbing not it's just unholy and too morbind for it's intended younger audiences. It's still a 5 star classic.

Determination, faith, and optimism are powerful forces that enable individuals to positively affect the lives of themselves and others. Christy, a captivating 1994 television series based on the book by Catherine Marshall and reminiscent of the Anne of Green Gables and Little House on the Prairie series, is the story of an idealistic 19-year-old woman named Christy Huddleston (Kellie Martin) who sets out for the wilderness of the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee in 1912 on a mission to educate the children of the remote community of Cutter Gap. A well-to-do girl raised in the city, Christy is shocked and completely unprepared for the extreme poverty, ignorance, and superstitious tendencies of Cutter Gap's people, but resolves to persevere in her commitment to better the lives of her young students. Each day brings a fresh lesson for the children and a new struggle that inspires Christy to draw upon and re-examine her own faith while striving to disprove local superstitions and replace long-held animosities and prejudices with virtues like forgiveness and respect. Christy is surrounded by a handful of allies in Cutter Gap that include fellow missionary Miss Alice Henderson (Tyne Daly), whom she idolizes for her strength, resolve, and mentorship; Fairlight Spencer (Tess Harper), a local woman who offers Christy the rare gift of friendship; mission preacher Reverend David Grantland (Randall Batinkoff), a hard worker who immediately becomes smitten with Christy; and local Doctor Neil MacNeill (Stewart Finlay-McLennan) whose gruff manner and atheistic beliefs both confuse and excite Christy. Eventually, Christy finds she's fallen in love with both Reverend Grantland and Doctor MacNeill and embarks on a very personal journey toward maturity while simultaneously succeeding in her quest to educate the children of Cutter Gap and affect significant positive change throughout the entire community. 5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......... Just a Wonderful Production.......2007-07-03

This TV series is a wonderful production. I as the rest of the world first saw this on TV in the 1990's and was delighted when it was put out on DVD. I am so glad that they put such wonderful productions on DVD for both young and old alike to enjoy for years to come.
This production is a must have in you private collection it is truly a delight to own and watch whenever one would like.

I have watch them before when they were on TV but I got lost when it when off the air.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-06-27

They just don't make good family programs like this anymore. My whole family has really enjoyed this series.

5 out of 5 stars Great family series.......2007-06-14

The original Christy series with Kelly Martin is the best and while this is a great set to own and watch over and over again, it's disppointing that the story was never finished until much later, and with another star playing Christy - just not the same! Despite that, these episodes are worth owning to watch over and over again. Christy struggles with spiritual issues just like the rest of us and the best lesson learned from all this is despite our flawed humanity, God still loves us and wants to use us for His good.

Disney's take on this historical confrontation between European settlers and Native Americans follows the paths of two future lovers. One is British adventurer John Smith, who travels the Atlantic with the Virginia Company to establish Jamestown. On the shore is Pocahontas, a typical Disney heroine: bright, beautiful, mischievous, and motherless. The two meet in the untamed wilds of America (the first meeting is quite divine), fall in love, and try to ward off the warring factions. It's Disney's version of a Native American West Side Story. Two Disney trademarks do not quite muster up: the villain isn't hissable and the score's only high point is the Oscar-winning "Colors of the Wind." Calling it "historical" is a stretch, but Disney created a very natural look at the two cultures. The Native American characters are handled especially well, and kids should be intrigued by their world; the movie is a far different lesson from the one their parents and grandparents learned. Disney has discovered a few things, though: you don't have to kill to solve your problems, and you can end the film without a happily-ever-after, illustrated by a touching final visual. (Ages 5 and older) --Doug Thomas

5 out of 5 stars Great dvd.......2007-03-11

My favorite Disney movie of ALL time and this is a wonderful DVD! It has extras on a second dvd and the scene of Pocahontas and John Smtih singing together was added back in! GREAT DVD!!

4 out of 5 stars Pochahontas.......2007-03-07

great storyline - a bit of history in animation . teach the children while watching a great film. The music is very well done and a great film to watch.

4 out of 5 stars Pocahontas purchased from Amazon.......2007-02-26

I was under the impression that the dvd would be enclosed in a cardboard cover like it was picture, because there was no indication that it wouldn't be. I was disappointed at this, but other than that I have no complaints, it was a rather speedy delivery and the product worked wonderfully.

4 out of 5 stars Pass On the "Gold Collection" and get the "10th Anniversary".......2007-01-27

The Gold Collection disc is too flawed to seriously consider at this point with the "10th Anniversary{ two-disc set now out.

Gold Collection:
1. Worst DVD tranfer of a Disney film in recent memory
2. No "If I Never Knew You". Not even the rough cut.
3. Extras: a Trailer and some music videos. Not much going on here.
4. Not anamorphic

10th Anniversary:
1. Anamorphic 16:9
2. Great new transfer
3. "If I Never Knew You" in the movie and completely animated. Major addition to the last half of the movie.
4. Both versions of the film, the 1995 cut and the 2003 "Director's Cut".
5. Loads of extras including a documentary, updated audio commentary track, sections for each major character with art, concept drawings, deleted scenes, scenes that never made it past the concept stage......you get the idea.

4 out of 5 stars Special Edition Nothing.......2007-01-08

Of course, Pocahontas is a beautiful film. It's a great story, pretty good animation, and some of the best Alan Menken songs. But the special Extras DVD is a joke. This DVD set is worth it just because of the added If I Never Knew You sequences, but was passed over for the special treatment other classic films got.

The visual complement to his 1994 book of the same name, Deepak Chopra's The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success provides adherents with the same kind of inspiration and advice that have made the New Delhi-born doctor and writer's work so popular. Whether it will sway those who consider Chopra more charlatan than guru, however, is another matter. To be sure, there's much to be said for the virtues of cultivating one's consciousness, which Chopra describes as "a faculty more powerful and reliable than the five senses." In fact, much is said about it here, often by some familiar faces, including singer Olivia Newton-John (who also provided much of the music for the DVD), actor-director Bill Duke, musician Dave Stewart of the band Eurythmics, and professional golfer Tina Mickelson. Their testimonials, while varying in specifics, all have the same essential theme: only after they'd reached their lowest ebb (breast cancer for Newton-John, a car accident for Stewart, drug problems for Duke) were they able to "tap into the power of their inner beings" and realize their full potential. That's where the Seven Spiritual Laws come in. Some contain considerable wisdom; the fourth (called "The Law of Least Effort") recommends acceptance and responsibility as alternatives to blaming others, while the sixth ("The Law of Detachment") suggests that relinquishing one's obsession with a particular goal will make it more likely to happen. Others are frustratingly vague; learning to "efficiently, effortlessly co-create with the universe" or to be "grounded in the wisdom of uncertainty" is all well and good, but in the absence of practical steps it comes off as vapid New Age speak. Overall, the DVD is well-produced, mixing interviews with the principals (Chopra included) with some lovely cinematography and several sequences that combine live action (mostly featuring Newton-John) with imaginative, computer-generated landscapes and interiors. The package contains a 16-page "study guide" along with the DVD. --Sam Graham

2 out of 5 stars Law of Don't Waste Your Time.......2007-07-04

This documentary had the feel of an amateur's work on the expensive side. Law is defined as "a rule of conduct or procedure established by custom" (American Heritage Dictionary). Chopra's first 'law' is the 'law of potentiality'. 'Potential' is defined as 'capable of being but not yet in existence'. How do you have a law about something that does not yet exist? It's not there.

3 out of 5 stars review of Depak Chopra DVD.......2007-07-03

I have previous tapes of Depak Chopra that I found very enlightening. I felt that Olivia Newton John was featured primarily in this DVD and I did not receive the same uplifiting message as I did when only Depak Chopra delivered his message. By the way, I like Olivia Newton John very much.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT! EXCELLENT! EXCELLENT!.......2007-06-08

I was extremely impressed by the quality of the movie/doctumentary and all the imformation entailed. Some of the scenes are beautiful. The special effects are spectacular. Yes, I am an Olivia Newton-John fan but a great artist as she, doesn't always wind up in great movies or great documentaries. This "Seven Spiritual Laws of Success" movie/documentary has captured the esscence of what I believe to be the truth of how we should live our daily lives according to God's will. It touches on several different religious beliefs without undermining any of them for the sake of another. It's a beautiful piece of truth-filled artwork. Olivia is amazing! She's beautiful and full of life. Watching this DVD and knowing how Olivia lives her life, I see both Deepak and Olivia are on the right track. I am a Christian and am truly touched by this movie/documentary. I believe anyone from any other religion will be inspired, too. It simplifies some of what we may all find complicated to understand within our own religion. It's well worth every penny and leaves you feeling really good inside. I recommend it wholeheartedly to everyone. You can't help but walk away seeing the world and the people around you in a whole new light.

This may be effective if you've never encountered Dr. Chopra's work before, but I found it more than somewhat cloying and insipid. I'm a huge fan (and own practically all) of Dr. Chopra's work. I'm a less-than-avid fan of Olivia Newton John (whose music is inescapable in this production -- I appreciate her accomplishments on a hard journey, just not her music). Having been completely blown away by his previous DVD, "How to Know God," I was really looking forward to this one, but having also read -- and heard the audio version -- of 7 Spiritual Laws, I was frankly appalled by the mediocre production values and limp and materialistic dramatizations. No transcendence here. Again I say: READ THE BOOK, LISTEN TO THE AUDIO VERSION if you really want to receive the message in its highest form. Also, watch How to Know God for a really transcendent experience. (Blessings to Dr. C, Oliva N-J and everyone involved...)

5 out of 5 stars Great Spiritual Lessons.......2007-06-03

The spiritual lessons offered by Dr. Chopra are always worth obtaining for positive personal growth. Sometime ago, I purchase the book. However, my lifestyle and the lack of quality time wouldn't allow me to complete or concentrate on many of the chapters. Needlessly to say, I didn't receive the benefits his teachings. However, watching a DVD requires more of our attention and senses. This DVD provides an audience such as myself, curious seekers and students the focusing, listening and learning tool needed there bye improving our learning abilities. Incidentally, the DVD includes a free 20-page study guide. Please become pro-active, be a seeker of spiritual & personal growth. Just check it out for yourselves, It has help me to become more spiritually aware therebye making it possible for me to get the next level; This is a great personal gift; Deepak Chopra "The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success" it's available in book form, audio CD and DVD.

* Dr. Chopra may God continue to Bless you with Good Health, Wealth and Wisdom * Respectfully Yours, Minister Kenny Hermes Waters MWP

Shot in glorious Technicolor, befitting its dynamic production design (Munchkinland alone is a psychedelic explosion of color and décor), The Wizard of Oz may not appeal to every taste as the years go by, but it's required viewing for kids of all ages. --Jeff Shannon

The Ace Ventura Deluxe Double Feature offers both Pet Detective and When Nature Calls in anamorphic widescreen with soundtracks in Dolby 5.1 and (not indicated on the packaging) DTS. The original DVD of Pet Detective was full-screen (1.33 aspect ratio) only, though it had a scene with Ace masquerading as Hans Kissvelvet, the dolphin trainer, that was dropped from the theatrical release. The deluxe edition is missing this scene. The deluxe edition also has a third disc with three episodes (about 70 minutes total) from the 1995-96 Ace Ventura animated series with Michael Hall as the voice of Ace. --David Horiuchi

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective was the 1994 box-office hit that turned comedy maniac Jim Carrey into Hollywood's first $20-million man. This gag-filled no-brainer stars Carrey as the titular rubber-faced gumshoe who tracks down lost pets for his heartbroken clients. Ace's latest case involves the apparent kidnapping of the Miami Dolphins' team mascot, Snowflake the dolphin (natch), and his investigation is a source of constant irritation for Miami police lieutenant Lois Einhorn (Sean Young). Friends fans will appreciate the presence of Courtney Cox, who remains admirably straight-faced as the Dolphins' publicist and Ace's would-be girlfriend, but of course it's Carrey who steals the show with shameless abandon. --Jeff Shannon

In When Nature Calls, the inevitable sequel, the disappearance of a rare African white bat, draws Ace (Carrey again) out of his spiritual retreat at a Tibetan monastery following the tragic outcome of his previous case. That traumatic experience, which makes for a hilarious opening-scene send-up of the Stallone thriller Cliffhanger, prompts Ace to venture to Africa, where he goes native with the tribe that hired him to find their symbolic bat. From that point anything goes, with Carrey pushing the boundaries of good taste (what, you were expecting good taste?) up to and including his now-infamous "birth" scene from the backside of a mechanical rhinoceros. Lighten up, and don't be ashamed if you find yourself laughing. --Jeff Shannon

Always a comic favorite,Jim Carrey plays the jumpy excitive pet detective Ace Ventura. Besides rescuing the occasional dog or cat,Ace lives the good life. However,he is called on an assignment involving a missing dolphin. Tension rises as he discovers the dolphin is the Super Bowl mascot.Ace immediatly gets on the case, with the occasional butt-talking,tutu-wearing humor.Ace then links the kidnapping to a Dolphin kicker named Ray Finkle, who is after Dan Marino, who he blames for missing a big kick in the last Super Bowl. Ace then links Finkle to Lieuntenant Einhorn, who turns out to be Ray Finkle in siguise. It's non-stop laughs as Ace,with the help of a Dolphins advisor named Melissa, takes back what is his and does what he does best!

Another incident of movie companies raping the public. Grrrrrh...

3 out of 5 stars Could have been better but not a total waste of money........2006-10-10

For the first time on DVD, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1.

There is also an audio commentary by the film's director Tom Shadyac. . Shadyac talks about how he ruthlessly edits his movies, always going for a fast pace and big laughs. He points out that originally the studio wanted someone like Chevy Chase or Rick Moranis but once Carrey came on board he drew upon his stand-up persona. Shadyac waxes on about the nature of comedy but with surprisingly little pretension. He also points out the bits that Carrey improvised in this fun, engaging track.

Also included are the theatrical trailer and several vintage T.V. spots.

When Nature Calls only has a theatrical trailer and vintage T.V. spots.

Included in this box set are three episodes from the short lived cartoon series that aired on CBS from 1995 to 1997. "The Reindeer Hunter" sees Ace helping Santa find Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer who has been kidnapped. This episode opens with a surreal set piece involving a snowstorm inside Ace's apartment. This episode wisely adheres to the first movie in terms of tone with a spot-on impersonation of Carrey as Ace. There is also quite a bit of recycling in terms of catch phrases as well (including one of the most famous, "Do NOT go in there!"). In "Natural Born Koalas," Ace and his monkey sidekick investigate ill-tempered koalas that have gone from sedate and cuddly to downright feral. Finally, there is "Dragon Guy" which features Ace dreaming about him and his monkey rescuing a fire-breathing dragon which is as odd as it sounds.

Even when his trademark twist-ending formula wears worrisomely thin as it does in The Village, M. Night Shyamalan is a true showman who knows how to serve up a spookfest. He's derailed this time by a howler of a "surprise" lifted almost directly from "A Hundred Yards Over the Rim," an episode of The Twilight Zone starring Cliff Robertson that originally aired in 1961. Even if you're unfamiliar with that Rod Serling scenario, you'll have a good chance of guessing the surprise, which ranks well below The Sixth Sense and Signs on Shyamalan's shock-o-meter. That leaves you to appreciate Shyamalan's proven strengths, including a sharp eye for fear-laden compositions, a general sense of unease, delicate handling of fine actors (alas, most of them wasted here, save for Bryce Dallas Howard in a promising debut), and the cautious concealment of his ruse, which in this case involves a 19th-century village that maintains an anxious truce with dreadful creatures that live in the forbidden woods nearby. Will any of this take anyone by genuine surprise? That seems unlikely, since Emperor Shyamalan has clearly lost his clothes in The Village, but it's nice to have him around to scare us, even if he doesn't always succeed. --Jeff Shannon

Description

M. Night Shyamalan (SIGNS, UNBREAKABLE, THE SIXTH SENSE), the director who brought you the world's greatest thrillers on DVD, now creates his most thought-provoking triumph yet ... breaking international records and dazzling audiences around the globe! THE VILLAGE is a smart, edge-of-your-seat chiller crawling with terrifying surprises and frightening twists and turns. An isolated, tight-knit community lives in mortal fear of an oppressive evil inhabiting the forbidden forest just beyond their tiny village. So frightening that no one ventures into the woods ... until one villager dares to face the unknown. With unforgettable performances from Joaquin Phoenix, Sigourney Weaver, William Hurt, Adrien Brody, and newcomer Bryce Dallas Howard, this powerful motion picture is one of Hollywood's best psychological thrillers and ranks with the best of Hitchcock!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars fun, scary, and thought-provoking.......2007-07-03

I love thriller films, especially when they make a worthwhile point, and this one definitely fits. Not only was it an excellently-made movie with a plot that took many unexpected turns, but it also made me think about the role fear plays in our lives and the use of lies to perpetuate fear and control people. I see that a lot of people didn't really care for this film, but I really liked it.

4 out of 5 stars Those We Often Speak Of.......2007-06-21

Although this film was widely successful, many felt that it did not live up to Mr. Shyamalan's previous efforts. I beilieve that is an incorrect assessment.

The Village is a truly beautiful film which tells one of the finest love stories in many years. The performances by all are top-notch, especially by the two leads, Joaquin Phoenix and Bryce Dallas Howard. The dialogue and usage of symbolism are exceptional, yet only part of the movie's many charms. The first time I tried to watch the movie, I found it slow and uninvolving. I was greatly mistaken. Much time is spent developing the state of the setting and establishing the main characters, rather than immediately jumping headlong into the action. This makes for a much more satisfying picture for those who like to think, as is the case with all of Night's films (save perhaps Lady in the Water, which is questoinable).

Few motion pictures capture the depths of mystery the way The Village does. Some say that they guessed the ending long before it came, but I find that unlikely. The clues are definitely there, as they should be, but everything has been orchestrated so perfectly it is hard to tear yourself away from the story long enough to consider the hidden truth.

Night is a master at revealing the right details at the right times. The pace can really only be thought of as slow if the viewer doesn't care to pay attention to everthing that is going on within this small village. Love is the unsung hero of the village, whose roots run deep within the hearts of nearly every person who lives there. The Village takes us back to a simpler time where morals were the very foundation of a community, where everyone was free to trust everyone else and happiness could be found in even the most mundane things. Churning the butter, sweeping the porch, washing the dishes - these are joyous undertakings in which each member of the town contributes to the good of all.

As for the creatures, termed "Those we do not speak of," they sure do speak of them a lot! Despite the fear the creatures evoke, it also strikes one as just a little humorous that was the term given to the mostly unseen monsters of the woods. Despite this, The Village is very intense indeed. It is mesmorizing to watch as the audience alternates between the goodness of the people and the fear that exists just out of sight.

I cannot say enough goos things about this underrated film. I loved every moment of it. Perhaps the best feature is how it shifts perspectives in mid-stream, but fails to lose any of its credibility. One day when you are feeling particularly low, know that you can count on this wonderful story to move you, to lift you up. The ending is awesome too!

4 out of 5 stars A Good Place to Visit.......2007-06-12

This movie doesn't have quite the scare factor of Shyamalan's "Sixth Sense," nor quite the same level of twist-ending. However it is still an absorbing movie that provides a satisfactory wrap for all the mystifications it dangles along the way. And more than that, it is capable of provoking a lot of serious discussion among any group of friends who see the movie together.

In fact, this would be a good movie to screen for almost any classroom because of the lively, larger debate it invites. It is suitable for almost all individuals old enough to consider such issues, without in any way being a watered down, sanitized "kids' movie."

It is likely to fraction viewers off into the pros and the cons, with all sorts of shadings in between. It is especially relevant when considering communities that set themselves apart, either intentionally, such as the Amish, or through the necessities of historic struggle, such as many Native American communities. How far should things be allowed to go in these instances of isolation? You may well ask yourself that after you have finished watching "The Village."

5 out of 5 stars The Village - more great M-Night.......2007-06-09

I give this movie a thumbs up. Yes it wasn't that scary but I don't think that was M Nights main point to the movie. For me ( spoiler here ) its about a group of people who try to escape society because something criminal and tragic happened to each of them. And though they have set up
a society of there own, tragedy still finds them. The romance and scary
elements are the icing on the cake. I really liked Bryce Dallas Howards
performance.

3 out of 5 stars The story line itself is fatally flawed.......2007-06-04

My problem with this work, which I viewed for the first time last night on television rather than though a DVD, is that what should have been a great movie with many good points in its favour turned out to be a "Bomb". This was no fault of the excellent casts and the artistic cinematography. The projection of an almost Amish like isolated Victorian era village community was very well -handled. As at least one other reviewer has written, the damp leafless November woods and mists lend as eeriness most suitable to the setting of the story. However, the story line itself is fatally flawed. The ending could have been saved had a better extra twist been added than the one we are shown. I do not want to include any spoilers here. In fact part of my problem is that I learnt too much about the movie before I watched it. Inevitably when there are so many dismal film works shown indiscriminately on TV channels one resorts to site such as Amazon or IMdB for some sense of whether a film to be screened on TV is worth watching or taping.

I am very fond of what might be called "twilight zone" genre films despite the fact that so few of this kind are successful. It is probably one of the most challenging film script genres to write. So I would have incorporated and expanded the feeble attempt at an extra twist right at the end of the film of a kind that would have strengthened the predictable and not very impressive main twist with a less predictable ending. This is not a movie that most people might enjoy, even if it were improved by such suitable amendments and additions that might occur at some time in the future, but for a minority it is an extremely well done if not a perfectly finished work of art. Thus I give it three stars.

Description

Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy: The Signature Collection. The films included are Woman of the Year, Pat and Mike, Adam's Rib and The Spencer Tracy Legacy. Woman of the Year (1942) was the first collaboration between Hepburn and Tracy, and you can see why it was the spark that ignited the flame that lasted 25 years, in this classic battle of the sexes. In Adam's Rib (1949), the duo are back at it again, except this time they are in the courtroom battling it out as two married lawyers - on opposite sides of a case! Pat and Mike (1952) was George Cukor's eighth and final collaboration with Katharine Hepburn, but this magnificent film about the improbable relationship between a female golfer and a sports promoter was a movie that proved to be ahead of its time in terms of sexual politics, and earned the production two Academy Award? Nominations: Best Story and Best Screenplay. For the first time on DVD and sold exclusively in this collection is the very special The Spencer Tracy Legacy: A Tribute by Katharine Hepburn (1986) in which Katharine Hepburn looks back on the life of her former co-star and best friend, Spencer Tracy, in a touching and insightful look at one of the great American actors.

5 out of 5 stars Tracy and Hepburn - What a Duo.......2007-03-18

I love their movies together. This is a wonderful gift for a true fan.

5 out of 5 stars A Must See...........2007-03-12

No relationship could transcend to the screen better than that of the Tracy / Hepburn duo. This collection has three times the magic with three of their best movies including the extraordinary bonus DVD for your viewing pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars Two of the best actors, three of their best films.......2007-02-01

It goes without saying that Katharine Hepburn is probably the greatest actress that graced the screen. At least, in my opinion she is.
Spencer Tracy was also a brilliant actor. Without doubt one of the best in history also.

Any fan of one or the other, is most likely a fan of them both, as their 9 terrific films together provide is with one of the greatest Hollywood duos of all time, and truly an affair to remember.

This collection, containing three of their finest films, is a very good buy.

First off, Woman Of The Year, their first film together. Director George Stevens (who had directed Hepburn earlier in Alice Adams), does a masterful job, as do writers Ring Lardner, Jr. and Michael Kanin (from whom Hepburn got the script and went to Louis B. Mayer, head of MGM, and demanded Tracy as her leading man, and Stevens as her director. She had tried and failed to get Tracy once for The Philadelphia Story, having always been a fan, but succeeded in her second attempt...lucky us). The finished film is a perfect balance: beautiful dramatic edge, in parts- highly amusing, and also one of the most moving romances I've seen. It never gets sappy. Its real. And totally unique. The tale of a sports writer, Sam Craig (Tracy) and political columnist, Tess Harding (Hepburn) at the same paper who in their respective columns rag on each other, but soon meet and become rather smitten. They marry, but married life doesn't really bring quite the happiness they thought it would, as certain party's don't put marriage before career...

Adam's Rib. The duos sixth film together, another great film. Similarly to Woman of The Year, this film has perfect blend of drama, comedy and romance. Tracy and Hepburn play married lawyers. Adam Bonner (Tracy), the district attorney is assigned the case of prosecuting a woman, Doris Attinger (Judy Holliday) who tried to shoot her husband when she found out he was having an affair. The issues involved with the case is something his wife, Amanda (Hepburn) feels very strongly about, and she chases the case herself, defending Attinger in court. As the trial gains momentum, the Bonner's bring the court tension home, and the husband and wife antics into court, as the battle for equal rights between men and women rages.
Truly a fine piece of work, George Cukor (one of the great Hollywood directors with many a classic to his name, that is often sadly over looked) has a divine knack for making first class romantic comedies, see for example, earlier work with Hepburn, The Philadelphia Story. Added to the craft of Cukor, a fine script by Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin, this film ends up a true classic.

Pat & Mike, one of Hepburn & Tracy's most popular films, it makes fine use of Hepburn's talents in other areas: sport. Tennis: she held her own. Golf: played a good game.
Tracy plays Mike Conovan, a smooth talking sports promoter, who believes Pat Pemberton (Hepburn) has huge potential as an all 'round athlete. Signing her, he takes her to pro golf and tennis tournaments, and Pemberton fares well, until her condescending, patronizing fiancé is present. Mike has to try and rid Pat of the nervousness of her fiancé's presence in order to succeed in play, but that becomes hard when some shady racketeers -who own a portion of Pat's contract- bargain with Mike to have her "throw" a tournament, to insure a gambling payout. The romance never outshone the comedy in this one, and the direction of Cukor again brings some very well done scenes on a tennis court, and all around fun filled Hepburn/Tracy pairing.

Also included in the collection is a documentary by Hepburn on Tracy - the Spencer Tracy Legacy, which pays tribute to Tracy's many great performances, and features interviews with many who worked with and knew him.

A must for fans of Tracy, Hepburn, or both, the films are classics, and documentary an insightful bonus.

It would be nice to have signature collections for Tracy and Hepburn separately, as well as a Volume Two of them as a duo.

Tracy is confronted by two hoods that are going to work him over, when suddenly Hepburn comes out of nowhere to give the two men what they justly deserve..."Pat and Mike" is full of the Hepburn/Tracy formula, with a first rate script and each one playing their part to the fullest, another winner from cinemas greatest acting couple.

SPECIAL BIO:
2. Spencer Tracy (aka: Spencer Bonaventure Tracy)
Date of birth: 5 April 1900 - Milwaukee, Wisconsin,
Date of death: 10 June 1967 - Beverly Hills, Los Angeles

Specal footnote, actor Spencer Tracy (April 5, 1900 - June 10, 1967) was a two-time Academy Award-winning American film actor who appeared in 74 films from 1930 to 1967, was often described as one of the finest actors in motion picture history...in 1935 Tracy signed with MGM, won the Academy Award for Best Actor two years in a row, for "Captains Courageous" (1937) and "Boys Town" (1938)....Tracy was also nominated for "San Francisco" (1936), "Father of the Bride" (1950), "Bad Day at Black Rock" (1955), "The Old Man and the Sea" (1958), "Inherit the Wind" (1960), "Judgment at Nuremberg" (1961), and "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" (1967)...Tracy and Laurence Olivier share the record for the most best actor Oscar nominations (9)...Tracy was one of Hollywood's earliest "realistic" actors; his performances have stood the test of time, other actors have noted that Tracy's work in 1930s films sometimes looks like a modern actor interacting with the more stylized and dated performances of everyone around him...In 1941, Tracy began a relationship with Katharine Hepburn, whose agile mind and New England brogue complemented Tracy's easy working-class machismo very well, though estranged from his wife Louise, he was a devout Roman Catholic and never divorced, Tracy and Hepburn made nine films together.

The 1994 box-office hit that turned comedy maniac Jim Carrey into Hollywood's first $20-million man, this gag-filled no-brainer stars Carrey as the titular rubber-faced gumshoe who tracks down lost pets for his heartbroken clients. Ace's latest case involves the apparent kidnapping of the Miami Dolphins' team mascot, Snowflake the dolphin (natch). His investigation is a source of constant aggravation for Miami police lieutenant Lois Einhorn (Sean Young), who turns out to be packing more than a pistol under her skirt. Friends fans will appreciate the presence of Courtney Cox, who remains admirably straight-faced as the Dolphins' publicist and Ace's would-be girlfriend, but of course it's Carrey who steals the show with shameless abandon. One viewing may suffice for a lot of people, but Carrey's hyper antics have made Ace Ventura: Pet Detective one of the bestselling videos of the 1990s. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Jim's best humor 5/5 stars.......2007-05-12

Amazon recommended this movie for me ace ventura was so incredibly funny and this is what jim carrey should stick to comedy and not playing in any boring drama or horror which i can't picture him in because im more use to him playing in comedy than drama. the animal loving ace ventura (jim carrey) is on a mission to search for a missing mascot dolphin from the miami dolphins has to search for the inusual insane clues that nobody but ace can find or suspect and I find myself laughing out loud over his insane personality when all he does is become humorous when he talks. This movie never gets old for me

5 out of 5 stars At first, I just didn't see Carrey's humor, then I just started watching Ace Ventura again and again... and again!!!.......2007-04-15

Jim Carrey was an acquired taste for me..

.. now that I've become accustomed to him, I believe that Jim Carrey
will go down as simply one of the most versatile comedians
ever to have lived..
his impersonations are fantastic.. his ability to mimic..
his combo baritone/tenor range makes his voice a dream..

After having watched tons and tons of 90s and 2000s comedies,
it is clear to me that no other comedian has come close
to replicating Carrey's antics.. a superstar in his own right,
Carrey is simply one of the funniest guys alive!

4 out of 5 stars Ordinary Movie Made Compelling by Jim Carrey's All Out Performance.......2007-03-30

Once in a while, a movie with a lame story line will be elevated by the tremendous efforts of one of the cast members. This is the case with Ace Ventura, a film about a pet detective hired to find an abducted dolphin who happens to be the mascot for the Miami Dolphins.

The movie is silly, and the story line (and its conclusion) is utterly ridiculous, but Jim Carrey is so darn funny that you don't mind that the script writing is inept and juvenile. So is Carrey, and he is great!

If you like Jim Carrey, you'll love this movie, which turned out to be his breakthrough into cinema stardom. If you hate Jim Carrey, then you will hate this movie as well.

3 out of 5 stars Not Jim Carrey's best film.......2006-11-20

I'm gonna remain loyal (and probably upset a lot of Ace Ventura fans), but I still love Liar Liar and Bruce Almighty. They are my favourite Jim Carrey films, and this will probably run a close fourth, after Man On The Moon.

Ace Ventura I wasn't sure about watching. My boyfriend got the new deluxe edition, with both films included, and I hated the cover on sight. But it is the perfect film to watch after a hard and stressful day's work. I ended up in tears within the first 20 minutes of the film, but with laughter, which is a good thing. Normally only Liar Liar can do that. When he rescues that cute little dog from the big bad guy, and is busy escaping in his car, the guy takes a baseball bat to it. (Hence the reason why Ace has to drive with his head hanging out the window like a dog, cos he can't see through the windshield, it's all cracked. This brings on more funny moments.) When the bad guy is bashing in the back window, Ace cannot get the car to start, so he asks the guy to give him a push. I had to actually pause the film until I stopped laughing - but then I had to watch it another two times.

Most of the hilarity - as always - comes from Jim Carrey's manic expressions and phrases. "Aaaaaaaaaaalriiiiiiiighty Then!!!!!!" That guy can pull some faces.

Most of the plot is paper thin, and probably the film would never have been a success without Jim Carrey's input. The "pet detective" of the film has to find a missing dolphin who's the missing Miami Dolphins mascot, and lots of twists and turns happen, including a woman who everyone seems to like used to actually be a man. It's pretty silly, and by this time, you feel like there can't be another twist.

Ace Ventura Pet Detective is a very wacky movie, not up to Jim Carrey's standards that I have been used to, but still a good movie to see at least once.
