3 out of 5 stars No Steve Martin.......2007-04-11

The video is fine, for what it is. But the description on Amazon still gives details of a 70s TV show that Stevens did with Steve Martin, Mama Cass, etc.

5 out of 5 stars True Talent is Sometimes NOT Recognized!.......2006-08-16

Mr. Liberal "One Star" idiot reviewer "TuPac Q. Liebowicz" obviously did not have the courage to use his own name when he wrote his review. He's the elitist kind looking down his sizable, upturned nose at real, normal folks who would have nothing to do with his kind. Ray Stevens is great!

5 out of 5 stars hilarious.......2006-06-02

Classics indeed! This was a hilarious collection of Ray Stevens's videos including "The Streak," "Santa Claus is Watching You," "Mississippi Squirrel revival," and "Everything is Beautiful." If you like Ray Stevens, you will love this collection. I loved it. Yeah, I did.

1 out of 5 stars Good Ol' Boy Humor!.......2004-07-05

Yeah, Good Ol' Boy humor....and we all know just how funny that is! I spent some time...many times... in the Deep South, NOT laughing at the wit of truckers and farm boys, and that this dvd is not even mildly amusing comes as no surprise. Ray Stevens always had to dub a laugh track on his records so that they would give the listener the impression that they are funny. In reality, while they are kinda cute and predictable, they barely raise a smile. The songs are poppy and listenable though and he probably is a nice enough guy. Picture and production quality ain't so hot but I'm sure you hicks wont mind.

5 out of 5 stars Kudos to Amazon.......2004-04-11

I was very pleased with the transaction, very efficient, speedy, and completely honest and up-front I would do business with this person again :o)

2 out of 5 stars Jim Reeves , Ray Price & Ernest Tubb DVD.......2006-08-19

While the slicked down hair of the guys, and the fluffy dresses and pig tails of the gals presented fond memories of the 1950s, I was disappointed in that most of the tunes performed by these three great artists, with a few exceptions, were relatively obscure tunes. The three perfomers did get equal playing time throughout the DVD which I felt was a good thing.

5 out of 5 stars great show.......2005-06-01

I bought this video on Reeves, Price name and Tubbs was a very pleasant surprise, one of my very favorites, buy it you'll love it

4 out of 5 stars They were country when country was still cool.......2003-09-02

If your idea of a Ray Price song is "Danny Boy" and if you like Jim Reeves but didn't know he recorded a song called "Mexican Joe", you probably won't like this fine DVD. However, if you can remember when Jim Reeves had fiddles - not violins - in his band, and you can recall a time when Ray Price ruled the Post-Hank world with the 4/4 shuffle beat and twin fiddles, you're in for a real treat.

For starters, with the exception of "Mexican Joe", I've never been a big Jim Reeves fan, but that's not big deal, because not only does this disc have my favorite Jim Reeves song, the other ones aren't that bad, especially since Jimmy Day is playing steel guitar on most of them.

But since I really like Ray Price, it doesn't matter if it's Jim Reeves or Jim Nabors footage on the DVD, because the Ray Price performances are classic. Of course, "Crazy Arms" is here. So are "I'll Be There", "You Done Me Wrong" and "Don't Let The Stars Get In Your Eyes". The only early Ray Price hits that are missing are "Release Me" and "Heartaches By The Number", but that can easily be overlooked on the strength of the songs that are present on this collection.

If this review was an infomercial, this would be the part where the voiceover says, "But wait! There's more!" In addition to Jim Reeves and Ray Price, there are seven Ernest Tubb performances included. Most of E.T.'s big hits are on Shanachie's highly recommended Ernest Tubb/Marty Robbins DVD, but there's some great Ernest Tubb tunes here, especially "That Wild and Wicked Look" and the divorce weeper, "Dear Judge".

All the footage on this disc was filmed between 1954 and 1956, before Nashville replaced the fiddle and steel guitar with flutes and oboes in attempt to regain fans lost to the Rock & Roll juggernaut. It might seem corny to today's country music fans, but this is the real deal, folks... in glorious mono and vibrant technicolor.

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding Footage of Two Country Legends.......2003-07-02

Ernest Tubb and Marty Robbins are two of my favorite country performers, and having seen some of this footage on VHS, I had to get the DVD. I wasn't disappointed at all!

The contrast of Tubb's raw, booming, honky-tonk baritone and Robbins' sweet crooning is complimentary; alternating the performances creates enough variety in tone where the disc never gets boring, which is nice.

While there's some specks and grain in the footage, for the most part, the disc is a real treat for the eyes. I'm a sucker for the rich, vibrant colors of the old Technicolor films, and Ernest Tubb and Marty Robbins look wonderful in this context. The camera work is good, too; it's not the bland put-the-camera-on-a-tripod-in-front-of-the-band-and-let-it-roll one might expect; the camera moves around, the performers walk around freely followed by the camera, and we see the band from cool angles. Of course, it's all tame compared to today's videos, but the cinematic quality of the performances ensures that you'll never get tired of watching.

As for the sound, I have no complaints. Glorious mono is the only way to listen to this music, as far as I'm concerned. Any enhancement would probably be overkill, IMO. If you're a fan of the original recordings, you'll definitely like what you hear on the DVD. It helps that there's a fantastic selection of songs. The disc kicks off with E.T. doing "Walkin' The Floor Over You" and Robbins' "Singing The Blues". If you're looking for Marty Robbins singing his classic cowboy ballads or Hawaiian songs you'll be dissappointed; this is Robbins at his rawest, singing straight-up, unadulterated country music. That's the Robbins I like best, so I'm happy, although "I'll Go On Alone" is conspicuous in its absence. Ernest Tubb has literally hundreds of classics to his credit, so there's obviously going to be some glaring omissions, but with "Answer The Phone" and "You Nearly Lose Your Mind" included, I can overlook the absence of "Soldier's Last Letter" and "Jealous Loving Heart".

The only thing that keeps me from giving this release five stars is the lack of extras. For starters, I would love to know the details behind the footage; not just the historical details, but the technical, geeky stuff. That's probably not a big factor for most people, but some artist bios would have been nice. I realize that most people purchasing this DVD will already be familiar with Ernest Tubb and Marty Robbins, but including some biographical info, along with a discography and album recommendations would make this disc a wonderful introductory item Classic Country novices. So when I say "extras", I'm not asking for a director's commentary, deleted scenes, multiple angles and Lithuanian subtitles, I'm asking for the bare minimum. This is, of course, a minor complaint. I can guarantee that I'll watch this again and again and I look forward to obtaining other discs in this series.

5 out of 5 stars Country Music at it's Finest.......2003-06-05

Two of Country's Greatest at the pinnacle of their career's.The raw but downhome voice of Ernest Tubb combined with the rich Emotional tones of Marty Robbins makes this DVD not just a want, but a requirement for the true Country Archivist.Young country musician hopefuls should look back at this for inspiration and a reminder of their roots.A true visual log of country history.

    Product Description

All you need to put over a good country song is your voice and a guitar. In this 75 minute DVD Fred teaches nine standards every country picker/singer should know... from start to finish. You ll learn an intro for each song, a backup pattern and bass runs to play while singing, an instrumental solo, and an ending. Picking up where his Beginner's Country Guitar video left off, Fred keeps the arrangements fairly simple but includes a few up-the-neck chord positions and hot licks. You ll learn solos and runs in five different keys. Each song is played at regular speed and then slowed down on a split-screen that gives you a close-up look at the picking hand and the chording hand. A detailed tab/music instructional booklet is included as a PDF file on the DVD. Titles include: New San Antonio Rose, Wild Side of Life, Waltz Across Texas, The Race is On, Beautiful Kentucky Waltz, That s the Way Love Goes, I Don t Hurt Any more, Someone I Used To Know and City of New Orleans. Level 1/2.

5 out of 5 stars Love that 50's country music!.......2003-12-17

I have had my copy of this dvd for over 3 years now, and thought it was time to put in my two cents worth.

I'd heard Chet Atkins many times over the years, but had never heard or watched Webb Pierce, before watching this dvd. Chet Atkins guitar playing is great to watch and listen to..what an exceptional talent! I had to get used to Webb Pierce's high pitched voice, but now I enjoy listening to his songs and looking at those great colorful outfits that he wore (and most other country performers at that time). Sure, the original production is a little corny, but that all adds to its charm.

The picture and sound quality on this disk is fine, considering the age of the source material. There are no extras except for chapter stops for each song. I think this dvd is a real "gem" in my collection and wish they would come out with more Country Music Classics on dvd.

3 out of 5 stars One genre, two extremes.......2003-09-02

I like Webb Pierce. I mean, I really like Webb Pierce. I also really like Chet Atkins (his guitar playing, at least - his slick production style is another story). So why does this DVD get only 3 stars? Because like oil and water, Webb and Chet just don't mix.

Webb Pierce's double aught twang was a bit much for a lot of people, especially "countrypolitan" record producers like Chet Atkins. Even for a fan like me, Webb's singing is put in a bizarre perspective when sandwiched between the guitar virtuousity of Chet Atkins. Fans of Chet Atkins who have never heard or seen Webb Pierce will be in for a huge shock; Webb's gaudy suits are subtle and tasteful compared to his singing. These same fans will also be disappointed to find that Mr. Pierce takes up the bulk of performances on the DVD. Personally, I think that some performance by Bill Monroe and/or Kitty Wells would have been more compatible with Webb's um... "distinctive" style.

One other minor complaint. Pierce starts most of his songs "dry" - that is, he strums a chord on his gee-tar, starts singing and the band ultimately joins in. This lack of a guitar/steel intro only serves to compound the twanginess of Webb's voice. At least with Ernest Tubb, we get a patented introduction that lets us know what lies ahead.

On the plus side, there's some great songs here. Webb does "Walking The Dog" (the Webb Pierce song, not the Rufus Thomas R&B hit), "That Heart Belongs To Me", "Slowly", and the ultimate drinking song, "There Stands The Glass" (conspicuous in its absence is "Back Street Affair"). Furthermore, he is joined by Red Sovine and one of the Wilburn Brothers (Teddy?) on "In The Jailhouse Now" and Carl Smith (!) and Marty Robbins (!!) on "Why Baby Why". That alone is enough reason enough to purchase this DVD. Music lovers everywhere can also rejoice in the fact that Red Sovine and Webb Pierce DO NOT perform "Little Rosa" on this disc.

While Chet Atkins fans might be disappointed by only 9 Chet tunes (compared to 18 Webb Pierce tunes), it's a delight seeing him in such a downhome context. It doesn't hurt that there's plenty of closeups of Chet's fingers doing their thing on the fretboards of some really cool vintage Gretsch guitars.

If you are fan of both artists, you will without a doubt enjoy this DVD... although not particularly in one sitting.

5 out of 5 stars this CD rocks!.......2002-12-20

This wonderful CD is worth watching just to check out Webb Pierce's neon-bright cowboy clothes -- which include a turquoise suit emblazoned with hot pink hibiscus blossoms, a tan suit embroidered with treble clefs and spider webs, and best of all --a bright yellow suit with two rhinestone-circled black delta record albums -- one on each chest. The singing is great, although Webb gets to be a wee bit monotonous. The CD goes back & forth between Webb & Chet -- Chet Atkins' guitar playing is unbelievably good, and contrasts well with Webb's absent-minded strumming. This CD was made before everything was choreographed to the hilt & entertainers all had perfect white teeth and highlighted hair. This is real, and pretty hokey. There are folks sitting on hay bales all over the stage -- including a girl in a gingham shirt & rolled up bluejeans, chewing on a piece of straw (!), women with red lips & dirty blond hair looking positively bored, fidgeting on the bales of hay and swaying back & forth to the music, guys in plaid shirts with neckerchiefs, clapping to the beat. At one point, there's a sheep on the stage. Guest appearances by Marty Robbins & my favorite, little Jimmy Dickens, are a bonus. The highlight is Webb leading a trio in "He's in the Jailhouse Now" -- sounding much more vintage than the "Oh, Brother" version, followed closely by a trio of "Why, Baby, Why." This is well worth it for any fan of old country music (or country kitsch).

5 out of 5 stars Great archival video... corny but cool!.......2001-12-12

Uh... just what did the one-star reviewer (above) think was going to be on this video? This is great stuff! Charming mid-'50s TV performances by two country music giants. Webb grows increasingly comfortable on camera as time goes by -- he starts out in '54 looking stiff as a board; within a couple of years he's learned how to smile and even sway a bit while he twinkles at the camera. Chet Atkins has a slightly sinister appearance -- as though perhaps he'd made a pact with the devil to be able to play the guitar so well. Their performances are taken from an Opry-related show that was hokey as could be, and pretty adorable... filmed in 33mm, with vivid, garish techni-colors that was perfect for Webb's nudie suits and the gingham outfits of all the gals. Where else are you going to find this material?
