At the age of 71, Ray Charles hasn't lost a step musically. If anything, his performance has been honed even further to what can only be described as the distillation of musical soul. Taped at a benefit concert in Miami, Florida, this set documents Charles with a massive orchestra that he manipulates like a trio, with a solid sense of dynamics and fun. He mixes everything from country to city, from pop to blues, from Hank Williams to George Gershwin, and renders it all with that purringly gritty voice and economical keyboard work. For good measure, he works out on saxophone for one number as well. He also sings a pair of duets with Diane Schuur, "It Had to Be You" and "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To." --Marshall Fine

It's possible, likely even, that Ray Charles put on a few poor or at least perfunctory performances in his career, but 50 Years in Music isn't one of them. Combined with his sheer talent, the man's natural ebullience and joy at playing music were enough to transcend the restrictions of any given scene--in this case, an antiseptic concert hall filled with a glamorous crowd barely visible beyond the footlights. In fact, if there's any significant drawback to this 90-minute show, recorded in 1991 in Pasadena, California, it's that there isn't enough Ray. Days before his 60th birthday, he showed up to deliver versions of a few of his standards ("What'd I Say," "Busted," "Georgia On My Mind," "America the Beautiful"), along with some less usual fare (the country-tinged "Just for a Thrill," the bluesy "Can't Keep a Good Man Down"), imbuing every tune with a freshness one might have thought impossible, given how many times he'd performed them. But there's a lengthy mid-show stretch when Charles isn't even onstage, and classics like "Your Cheatin' Heart," "I Can't Stop Loving You" and "I Got a Woman" are performed by Randy Travis, James Ingram, and Michael McDonald respectively; good singers all, but not in a league with Brother Ray. Meanwhile, three duets yield mixed results: Ray and Stevie Wonder mesh superbly on "Livin' for the City" and Willie Nelson relaxes with the star on "Busted," but the egregious Michael Bolton damn near ruins "Georgia" with his ear-shattering, over-the-top emoting. And the presence of Tevin Campbell (a young Quincy Jones protégé who comes on like a more wholesome version of Michael Jackson) and Brit band the Brand New Heavies, neither of whom performs a song that has anything to do with Ray Charles, is merely baffling. 50 Years in Music is just fine as tributes go, but as the late attorney Johnnie Cochran might have put it, "If you've got Ray, let him play." --Sam Graham

2 out of 5 stars Not the greatest.......2007-06-27

I should have read the description more carefully. Really thought that I
was buying a Ray Charles CD. Instead there was a minimum of
music performed by Ray, and a lot of less than great performances by others. Disappointing!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome DVD.......2007-03-27

This is a must have DVD. We thoroughtly enjoyed watching Ray dance in his seat. Thanks for having it.

There's no such thing as a bad song as long as it's sung by the late Ray Charles, and Live at the Jubilee Auditorium Canada offers yet more irrefutable evidence of that. This concert, recorded in 1981, has its flaws; it's brief (48 minutes, no bonus features), and hearing Charles with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in a big, formal venue with a rather listless audience isn't exactly ideal. But Charles, the man who's rightly credited with "inventing" soul music, always had an inimitable way with a song. On the one hand, he transforms a relatively unfamiliar choice, Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Oh What a Beautiful Morning," from a gentle waltz into a rousing, funky romp ("Some Enchanted Evening," another tune by that team, is marred by an awful disco beat). On the other hand, even if he performed "Georgia on My Mind," "Hit the Road Jack," "What'd I Say," and "I Can't Stop Loving You" literally thousands of times, the man was incapable of merely going through the motions. He adds little vocal inflections and filigree that help make the hoariest of standards sound fresh--check out "What'd I Say," where a long, funny intro (Ray yodels!) blossoms into a cooking version of the tune. This may not be Ray Charles's greatest performance, but hey, any Ray is good Ray. --Sam Graham

3 out of 5 stars Nice DVD, but not a must have.......2004-12-28

After reading the reviews and looking at the song list, I had high hopes for this disc. The picture quality was good and Ray's energy as he bounced onto the staged was also promising. However, from the very first song, the recording is a disappointment. In the first song, the audio mix is so far off that you can't even hear his piano. This is eventually corrected, but throughout the performance we all felt that it was a bit hollow - lots of surface flash, but none of the true depth of soul for which Ray Charles is legendary.

5 out of 5 stars Simply The Best.......2004-10-11

I have all of Ray's other DVD's and this is THE BEST!! Thank you Thank you Thank you to whomever decided to release this DVD. This DVD is a throw back to the 80's. Ray had a really funky sway and swing and his ad libs are ultra hip. He plays every song with his entire soul and self. His energy jumps out of the screen from the moment he dances onto the stage. Talk about an artist who enjoys music and has perfected the art of performing...his entire body becomes a human metronome and he can hardly contain himself as he wiggles along the edges of his seat/bench. It was a post-humous gift to see him performing 4 songs that I hadn't heard him perform live or on CD (Riding Thumb, Oh What a Beautiful Morning, Some Enchanted Evening and I Can See Clearly Now). I am convinced that Ray could sing the ABC song and make it a soulful hit. Hearing his studio work on CDs is Genius but seeing him peform love is the real Masterpiece. The audio and video quality of this CD is EXCELLENT and the camera work really captures the essence of his performance. I have no complaints about this CD, only thanks!!

I attended to the Ray Charles Tribute at the Staples Center on 10/8/04 which will be aired on CBS and I hope they release a DVD of this special night. Mary J. Blige, Elton John, Usher, Norah Jones, Reba McIntyre, Billy Preston, BB King, Al Green and Stevie Wonder and others sang Ray's greatest hits and it was an unbelieveable concert!!

We miss you Ray and will never stop loving YOU!!

1 out of 5 stars Ray Charles-In Concert.......2007-01-30

I have always admired Ray Charles, but his performance here was far less than satisfactory. For example, when he sang, the words were slurred so bad that unless you knew the song, you had no idea what he was saying. The entire DVD was like this. I couldn't help but wonder if he was stoned during his performance.I sent it back and purchased a different DVD of a different artist.

2 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......2005-05-13

Some people have complained that the sound is turned down too much on this DVD. After watching it, I wonder if they did it on purpose.
Ray Charles is in great spirits at this concert but certainly not in great voice.
The orchestra is great and Ray could certainly still play the piano just fine but his singing is pretty bad.
Diane Shur, who guest stars on two songs is very good but if you're going to get this DVD for her, you might as well get her own DVD.
Anyway, get some other Ray Charles DVD instead.

5 out of 5 stars Magical and Marvelous.......2005-05-08

This may be the concert of a lifetime. A 73 year old artist who is in his "prime". The riches of Rays' vocal interpretation, as well as his spiritual commitment to each song, makes this a rare offering. Here is an old, seasoned veteran that uses all his tricks without overstatement at any level.
The stunning orchestra and beautiful lighting, set an impressive and unforgettable scene.
For those who know Ray's life, the songs are an articulation of the high and low moments of his career. "This Songs for You" is filled with pathos. One senses Ray singing it to his wife. In many ways, this offering is his final testament.
For those who know the young Ray, this offering of the older Ray will distance them from that immature and searcing voice, and make them wish for more of the old Ray. Wow. Buy two. One to play, and one to keep for your grandchildren.

3 out of 5 stars A great artist, but the concert is a bit too bland for me........2005-03-17

I sort of agree with the reviewer who was forced to use the word "blah." The musical numbers aren't those I'd prefer to see/hear again. Even the version of "Georgia" is a bit bland. The CD from the film "Ray" is great, by the way - it has a lot of great Ray Charles - the original recordings. I'm also looking forward to another DVD of Ray Charles that I bought - haven't seen that yet, though.

2 out of 5 stars Not the Ray I knew.......2005-03-16

I'm sorta at a loss with this concert. First off, the sound is only dolby 2.0 ... not what I was expecting for a DVD released this recently. Secondly, Ray seems a little out of it ... I had to strain to hear the words to several of the songs. I found several of the songs simply boring. Don't get me wrong .. I'm a huge fan of Ray. This concert just left me ... well ... blah.

5 out of 5 stars Jazz Pianist Extraordinaire.......2007-04-12

Johnny O'Neal is a pianist that is likened to Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum, Erroll Garner, and the other greats. Listening to Johnny, I feel he is all the best of these pianists wrapped up in one package. Johnny has a sense of swing that few players have. Just when you've heard it all, he goes back to his roots to lay some gospel down-home-baptist-church grooves of the audience. And--he can sing too!
The DVD is beautifully filmed and the camera crew do a great job in catching all the energy of Johnny, Zack and Kermit. I highly recommend this DVD to all lovers of traditional jazz. Johnny is at his best on this work. I'm so glad the essence of Johnny O'Neal has been captured on film.

Charles devised a new form of black pop by merging '50s R&B with gospel-powered vocals, adding plenty of flavor from contemporary jazz, blues, and (in the '60s) country. His singing style was among the most emotional and easily identifiable of any 20th-century performer. He was also a superb keyboard player, arranger, and bandleader. The brilliance of his 1950s and 1960s work still resonates today and will forever be regarded as an invaluable treasure, he recorded often and performed up to the year of his death. This concert was recorded in 1981 with the Edmonton Symphony and is to this day one of the finest performances of the legendary Ray Charles.

This is my first DVD of Ray Charles and as a perfomer Ray Charles can hack it with the best. To hear his live version of Hit The Road Jack is worth the price of the DVD alone. Why only 4 stars? It was recorded for TV and in 1981 they had no DTS. I would definitely recommend it to any Ray Charles fans and live performing fans everywhere.
