Rod Stewart's various incarnations--Rod the Mod, Rod the Rocker, Rod the Crooner, and so on--are on display on Live at Royal Albert Hall. In what amounts to a 90-minute singalong with his adoring fans, the raw-voiced singer (now huskier than ever) reprises selections from throughout his long and fruitful career, from his early '70s solo albums, including the best of the lot, 1971's Every Picture Tells a Story, through his surprisingly skillful (and successful) new millennium emergence as an interpreter of the Great American Songbook. Despite his having released three CDs of standards by the time of this good-looking, great-sounding concert, only five of the 17 tunes come from them, including a version of "As Time Goes By" with Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders (lush orchestration notwithstanding, there's no disguising the fact that both singers are more at home singing rock or pop than jazz, big band, or cabaret material). Much more emphasis is put on early Stewart material like "You Wear It Well," "Reason to Believe," and "Maggie May," songs that were and are beautifully limned by acoustic guitars, violin, and mandolin. Good buddy, former bandmate (in the Faces and the Jeff Beck Group), and current Rolling Stone Ron Wood plays guitar on a couple of numbers (including a raucous "Stay with Me"), and while Stewart does insist on giving "Hot Legs" a spin, at the age of 59 he at least has the good sense to keep "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" under wraps. A brief tour documentary is the principal DVD bonus feature. --Sam Graham
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely Great Concert.......2007-05-07
This Rod Stewart concert at Royal Albert Hall has to be one of his best performances I've seen. There were no aspects of the show that I did not totally enjoy. You felt like you were sitting up front in the audience!
What A Fabulous Concert!.......2007-04-24
Rod Stewart's "One Night Only: Live At The Royal Albert Hall" is one fabulous and remarkable concert. Imagine a venue that caters to famous and legendary singers, one of them was an icon of a singer Frank Sinatra. This stunning concert is a showcase of Rod Stewart's big hits as ROD THE MOD, and his bestselling Great American Songbook series as ROD THE FAB (the title I coined - short for fabulous interpreter of the Great American Songbook). He describes his GAS: Volume I as "an album that calms you down." He added that recording it was a great challenge and he was so thrilled with the outcome. According to him, "it's so impossible for him to run out of these songs from the Great American Songbook." He further states that he "could probably make six albums of these songs quite easily." He already made four volumes, which are all bestsellers. I only hope that there would be an upcoming Volume V. It's a common knowledge that he truly enjoyed this experience so much and understands how much it means to him and to his fans as well. And he also wants it to always remain something special. The Songbook albums have meant a great deal to him and thinks that singing these songs has made him a better singer one can only hope.
I must admit that I only became a fan of Rod the Fab when he recorded the standards from the Great American Songbook, though there were occasional hits he sung that really appeal to me like "Reason To Believe," "I Don't Want To Talk About It" and "You're In My Heart." I've watched one of his earliest television interviews with Katie Couric while promoting his GAS series. Ms. Couric asked him why he "doesn't look his age." I guess he was sixty then, and he declared that some of his "secrets of looking young are . . . lots of music, wine and soccer."
His performances are in every way sparkling and dazzling as the brightest evening star, and so electrifying as lightning! He has the backing of a large orchestra and well-rehearsed musicians to make this concert the greatest gig of the year! He shares some interesting anecdotes, one of which is about his first guitar. His Dad gave him a guitar for no apparent reason and told him: "Why don't you take this up, there's money in this." And the rest, of course, is history.
While I'm thoroughly delighted with the concert in its entirety, my favorite parts are all his performances on the Great American Songbook. On these presentations, the London-born singer looking so dapper in his pinstriped outfit brings new life to these chestnuts with his excellent showmanship and his fabulous stage presence.
My highlights:
"They Can't Take That Away From Me" - beautiful sax solo by Katja.
"Blue Moon" - the guitar solo is absolutely breathtaking!
"As Time Goes By" - an amazing duet with Chrissie Hynde with exquisite solos on violin by Janet and sax by Katja.
"For Sentimental Reasons" - a lovely performance.
"Reason To Believe" - one of the most notable performances.
"I Don't Want To Talk About It" - a duet with Amy Belle who has a very expressive voice.
There's no doubt that Rod Stewart is such a total performer and he could command your undivided attention whether you're listening to his CDs or watching his DVDs such as this one.
What a fabulous concert!
Get it!.......2007-04-19
Get it. No need for detailed reviews. You won't regret it. The best in my collection. Not only is it jam packed with all Rod's hits but it's a fun and sexy concert.

UNBELIEVABLE!!!!.......2006-12-14
This is one of the best concert DVD's I have ever seen. All of Stewarts best. A new star that Rod discovered that he does a duet with is THE BEST THING TO COME ALONG IN DECADES!!! Amy Belle is her name. Her singing actually sent shivers down my spine.I'm not kidding. And she's a knockout!!!

Filmed at their Royal Albert Hall debut gig in September 2000, Bond Live is a slick showcase for four classically trained, ex-session musicians and their fusion of string quartet and rock music. Whatever the hype (four beautiful women wearing scanty tops and dancing with violins while backed by a five-piece rock combo and a small, rarely seen string section), it has nothing to do with making classical music cool and everything to do with sex. In "Duel," first and second violins Haylie Ecker and Eos trade licks "guitar-hero" style, and most of the tracks are new instrumentals written for the album Born, though "The 1812" does manage to reduce Tchaikovsky's overture to a five-minute dance number. With rock-show lighting, synthesizers, dance beats, and a finale involving the "James Bond Theme" followed by a Rio-style fiesta for the closing "Victory--Carnival Mix," this is camp, melodramatic, sexy fun. --Gary S. Dalkin, Amazon.co.uk

Bond...Brilliant!.......2007-04-06
Another outstanding DVD production. This one filled with more music, but the lighting for the finale is poor. Great buy!
Classical hot again........2006-12-27
This is how classical music should be from now on and exactly how Mozart would've loved it.
Expected more..........2006-11-10
not as good as Celtic Woman or Hanley Westenra ... I would say not half good. I can say they have great talent, but artistically ... wrong managed. Stopped watching after 30 min.
GREAT for die-hard fans .......2006-10-14
this is great for die-hard bond fans. i have been a fan since 2000 or 2001 and i love this dvd.
High Energy Performance.......2006-06-30
These women ROCK! This is a wonderful performance by 4 very talented string musicians. It is impossible to watch this video and not start dancing, or at the least, tapping your feet. I enjoy watching it while I'm cooking--really gets me in a festive mood. Highly recommend it if you enjoy up-tempo, contemporary music.

Neil Sedaka like a bottle of wine.......2007-05-15
After going to a Neil Sedaka concert recently in my area
(apr 2007) i went online to see what was available. There i discovered Neil doing Albert Hall in London. He, like a bottle of wine has aged phenominally. His voice is better than ever. His enthusiasm is contagious. He manages to bring a vibrancy to his old hits. Just watching him do Amarillo was worth purchasing this DVD.
Personell Opinion.......2007-03-15
Neal still got it..BUT TOO MANY NEWER SONGS,WISH HE HAD STUCK TO THE ORG SONGS AS RECORDED WAY BACK WHEN..MOST FOLKS WANT A GOOD VIDEO OF THE OLD HITS IN ORG FORMAT..BUT ALL IN ALL GOOD SHOW..
Enjoy Neil Sedaka!.......2007-01-28
For the slightly older DVD viewer, & especially Neil Sedaka fans from the 60's & 70's, this is a very enjoyable DVD - you can sing along & remember your nostalgic past. Also, considering the Amazon price, it represents excellent value for money, partly because the DVD must have almost every song Sedaka ever wrote & recorded.
Buy & enjoy!
Must have for all Neil Sedaka fans!.......2006-11-01
First, the correct title for this performance is "The Show Goes On - Live at the Royal Albert Hall." This is a stellar collection of 28 songs, including all the Sedaka favorites. The venue is equal to the quality of the performance, London's Royal Albert Hall. His solo performance is enhanced by a duet with his daughter, Dara, as well as one with Tony Christie. Buy and cherish!

After Ladysmith Black Mambazo gained initial fame with American audiences thanks to Paul Simon's 1985 Graceland album, the group achieved tremendous popularity in the international music scene. This 1999 production begins with a fascinating interview with the group's leader and songwriter, Joseph Shabalala. The articulate Shabalala shares the origins of the group's name, his personal calling, and his dream to share South Africa's musical canon with the world while conveying an immense sense of power and vision not often found in today's music. The live concert performance at London's Royal Albert Hall is a "best of" performance that showcases the group's wonderful a cappella harmonies and the genius of Shabalala's writing. The songs (in both English and Zulu) celebrate universal themes, like the misunderstandings between the younger and older generations in "Sisesiqhingini" (Stupid Stupid Stupid). "Phansi Emigodini" (Deep down in the mines) is especially masterful in its use of repetitive rhythms and vocal sound effects to re-create the sounds of picks and hammers at work in the mines. These potent effects create a hauntingly realistic atmosphere and add a deeper, universal level of meaning to the Zulu lyrics. Notable too is the unique "tiptoe dancing" that accompanies many of the songs. This expressive style of dance focuses primarily on the feet, but at times encompasses the entire body and lends a rich, visual aspect to Ladysmith Black Mambazo's powerful music. Following the encore (Graceland's "Homeless") is a short segment featuring Ladysmith Black Mambazo on location in the parks and streets of Los Angeles. --Tami Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
Next best thing if you can't see them live.......2005-10-04
Saw Ladysmith Black Mambazo some years ago live and enjoyed their talents. Its nice to hear/see them and to get some extra info thats on the DVD as well.
So much fun.......2003-02-23
I used to be in a choir. Whenever the director wanted us to do more than just sing the notes, she would mention Ladysmith Black Mambazo, like these guys knew how to do what she wanted, and anyone who bought a CD at the time could hear the luscious sound of a large group simultaneously thinking the same thing on an emotional level that would strike home in people's souls. After Paul Simon used them on his "Graceland" album, it wasn't hard to hear what they sounded like. Most people might have a language problem on "Phansi Emigodini (Deep down in the mines)." Not being able to identify the meaning of words in an African language can be an obstacle to paying attention, but they sign what they are doing with their hands and feet. The DVD jacket calls it "tiptoe dancing," but it is so much more. The whole group is adept at waving their hands and feet around in the air, and the more you watch them, the more fun they let themselves have. Americans have gotten used to a lot of individual star performers, but these guys cavort like letting their souls loose is the most contagious behavior on the planet. Our kids must be learning stuff like this in school. It is hard to understand them, but do they care?
Soul touching harmonies.......2001-03-05
I have not purchased this DVD yet but I did see these blokes in a stage production called "The Song of Jacob Zulu" some years ago in Perth Western Australia and they as well as the story had a very big impact on my soul.
well i havent purchased it yet!.......2000-06-18

Awesome, Awesome, Awesome.......2007-04-25
Can listen to it over and over and over. Excellent production, variety and amazing sound quality. Overall a great product.
On my Top 10.
Spellbinding Performance.......2007-01-09
I viewed the DVD at a friend's house in Germany and decided to buy it as a birthday gift for my wife when I returned to the US. On that day I invited friends over and we watched the concert with breaks for dinner and conversation.
Although most of the songs are in Italian, which I don't understand, Zucchero sings with a passion that envelops and mesmerizes the viewer. To add variety he has a long list of guest artists including Eric Clapton and Pavarotti perform with him. However, we were most captivated by the his duets with Dolores O'Riordan (ex-Cranberries singer) and Cheb Mami (Arabic singer from Algeria - he is also the voice on Sting's Desert Rose).
Given that Zuchero writes all his music he is a phenomenal artist both as a writer and performer. Although it has been a month since we first viewed the video, we still watch substantial sections of it whenever we find time.
I would highly recommend the DVD.

For a band that held its farewell tour in 1982, the Who sound far from finished when it comes to exploring the greater passions and sonic possibilities of its old material. Never has that been more evident than in The Who: Live at the Royal Albert Hall, a record of the group's remarkable stand at a charity gig in London late in 2000. Perennial patrons of adolescents, the Who is clearly energized by an emotional attachment to Britain's Teenage Cancer Trust (beneficiary of the fundraiser), a feeling that also sweeps through several well-chosen guests who happen to be spiritual descendants of the band. After a long opening set that includes a scorching "Anyway Anyhow Anywhere," a gorgeous update of "The Kids Are Alright," and a soulful "Bargain," the Who usher in punk violinist Nigel Kennedy to help electrify "Baba O'Riley," the Jam's founder Paul Weller for a lovely, acoustic rendition of "So Sad About Us," and Stereophonics guitarist-vocalist Kelly Jones for a nearly epiphanous "Substitute."
More than just a parade of celebrities paying homage to Townshend and fellow Olympians Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle, the select visitors here challenge the Who to add new colors to old warhorses (Noel Gallagher's psychedelic tinge on "Won't Get Fooled Again") and delicate semiclassics (Eddie Vedder's sympathetic duet with Townshend on "I'm One"). By the end of a robust evening, Daltrey's voice is shot and Townshend looks ready for a shot of vitamins, but anyone who would declare the Who a bunch of worn-out grandpas is spoiling for a Mod-era stomping. This is an essential set for Who loyalists and a wonderful show for everyone else. --Tom Keogh

Absolutely Amazing!!!.......2007-01-17
This is a must have for any Who fan, especially if you love how John Einwistle plays, his bass solo is the best I've seen, I couldn't have expected anything better!
Absolutely the BEST post Moon Who DVD (so far).......2006-12-20
What a treat this was after watching the "Tommy and Quadrophenia Live" DVD. Don't get me wrong, that DVD was fine, but this one just blew me away. There are some factors included in this concert that didn't work, but 92% of this concert is incredible. Let's start with what doesn't work to get it out of the way. Three of the special guests should not have been there. I'm referring to Noel Gallagher, Bryan Adams, and Kelly Jones. Now, I don't really have anything against any of them on their own, but when you put them with the Who, it simply does not fit. First of all, Noel Gallagher plays on "Won't Get Fooled Again" which is my all time favorite Who song. He plays what Pete should be playing. The sound is good but I always know in the back of my mind that Townshend should be the lead guitarist on that song rather than Noel Gallagher. Next, Bryan Adams can not sing "Behind Blue Eyes." It's almost illegal for him to sing that song. Roger should not have allowed Bryan Adams to sing one of his own most beloved songs (especially since he sings it so well on the Who's Next album). Bryan Adams could have maybe gotten away with "You Better You Bet." Finally, Kelly Jones should never had been allowed to sing "Substitute." What a let down it was for such a great song to be ruinned by a guy who not only didn't know the words, but also had to drown out Pete's guitar with his own playing. Only Roger (or Pete) should be allowed to sing "Substitute" and "Behind Blue Eyes," and only Pete should be allowed to play guitar on "Won't Get Fooled Again." Thank goodness for the rest of the performances on this DVD. The best performances are "I Can't Explain," "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere," "Pinball Wizard," "Relay," "My Wife," "The Kids Are Alright," "Bargain," "Magic Bus," "Who Are You," "Baba O'Riley," "Drowned," "The Real Me," "5:15," and "My Generation." Eddie Vedder was smart to pick "I'm One" and "Let's See Action" to sing on since they are not as well known songs and he does a fantastic job on them. He fits in with the Who. Paul Weller also does a great job with Townshend on "So Sad About Us" which is also not as well known. These two guys were smart to pick songs for which they wouldn't upstage anyone in the Who. "Getting In Tune" and "Mary Anne With The Shaky Hand" should have been included on the DVD (they're both on the CD). Pete's guitar playing is at its best since Moon was around. He is very inspired and there are plenty of close ups of the master at work. Pete is simply one of the five best guitarists to ever set foot on the face of the earth and he proves it on this DVD. John's bass sounds great throughout the DVD. His solo on "5:15" is amazing but also on "The Real Me," "My Generation," "Pinball Wizard," "Magic Bus," "My Wife," "Who Are You," and many others. John (rest in peace) is without a doubt the best bass player who ever lived. I'm so glad that I got a chance to see the Who in concert when he was still alive. You even get more shots of John on this DVD which is great because the camera was never friendly to him. Roger is on fire throughout the whole show and Zak Starkey along with John Bundrick play very well too. Even though this is a post Moon show, it is still one of the best filmed performances of the band. The camera angles are excellent too as is the sound. Overall, this is a spectacular DVD with spectacular performances (except for the 3 noted earlier). However, there should be a reissue of this DVD containing alternate performances of "Won't Get Fooled Again," "Substitute," and "Behind Blue Eyes" without the special guests and containing "Getting In Tune" and "Mary Anne With the Shaky Hand." Then this DVD would be perfect. But with all that aside, I would strongly recommend this DVD for any Who fan because 20 out of the 23 performances will blow you away.
Amazing!!.......2006-08-09
They say that Ringo's good friend, Keith Moon, taught young Zak Starkey how to play drums. Well that's for damn sure. No Ringo here with The Who. If there was anyone that could have and should have stepped in for Keith Moon, it's Zak Starkey. Starkey lifts this performance to the highest plateau's. Oaisis is lucky to have Starkey behind them! Top notch performances on every song and great guests, Noel Gallagher (Oasis) and Eddie Vedder to name a few. Buy this and crank the surround sound, because there is only one way to listen to the Who and one way to watch this concert, LOUD!!!!
Great performances from...most.......2006-06-18
John and Pete are great in this. Roger, bless his heart, just can't quite handle the vocals like he once did. Still, he would have been better than Bryan Adams on "Behind Blue Eyes". As another reviewer noted here, Adams still got the lyrics wrong, even after being corrected. The real surprise to me was the drumming of Zack Starkey - that guy was GREAT! Of the "guest" performances, only one was a real standout: "Substitute" sounded fresh and vital with the Stereophonics dude. He sounded like he knew the song, and wanted to tear into it! Overall, the show was pretty darned good, though the "extra features" are not particularyl impressive - unless you want to see Bryan Adams being told how to read.
Great Performance Spoiled by Special Guests.......2006-06-10
If this had been an all-Who show, I would have no trouble giving this performance 5 stars. Pete, Roger and John are on fire at this concert, pouring out lots of energy and power into their songs. The interaction between band members is great, as are some of the jokes that are passed between them. It's also great to see and hear John Entwistle on this performance. His solo during "5:15" is particularly amazing. The Who really aren't the same without John. I saw them in 2004, with Pino Palladino on bass. Though great, it just can't measure up. Pete's acoustic set was nice too, for variety. All in all, The Who were in 100% top form at the Albert Hall in 2000.
The problem I have with this performance are the special guests, Bryan Adams in particular. The DVD comes with bonus features which include rehearsal footage, and Pete corrected Mr. Adams twice on the lyrics to "Behind Blue Eyes." He still got it wrong onstage. The other special guests were okay, but nothing phenominal. The Who don't need special guests, they are great just on their own.
But this performance was still great, and was also one of the last with John, so for that, it is definitely worth it.

Incredible performance........2007-05-12
What else can be said of Juaquin Cortez that has not been sed. If you want to know why he's so famous. Whatch this DVD.
The prodigal son!.......2005-06-06
In this historical document dated from 2001, Joaquin Cortés displays all his unbeatable art in this difficult genre, product of many crossed rhythms and musical influences, giving a successful hybrid that works out with sublime grace; he exhibits grace, charisma, frame of mind. And he also prepares the necessary choreography and ensemble process with his string sections, bass, female singers, percussionists, guitars, Peru an box, drums and cata (an African instrument) built a solid and extraordinarily convincing spectacle that engaged not only the successful audience that literally stowed the Royal Albert hall, but besides, all the viewers who enjoyed this outstanding spectacle.
My only complaint has nothing to do with Cortes, but the terrific process of edition and filming; the camera literally forbade us to enjoy highlights moments focusing faces and dismissing Cortez heel wonders. What a pity!
Fantastico !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-10-31
this DVD is a well-produced overview of a fantastic performance of a tremendous flamenco ensemble !!! all the performances blend into one power-full flow of Flamenco "Duende" !!! maestro Cortes' dancing definately benefits from an incredible group of musicians & is the best high energy male flamenco dancing you could ever wish to see on a big stage [although Flamenco, for my tastes,is best experienced in small Juergas as opposed to the concert stage]... what impresses me most is the cohesive energy of the entire group more than Cortes' individual dancing & that's what the producer of the film focused on when filming... i can see where Flamenco dancers would be deeply disappointed by the production's constant variety of views BUT the overall effect of the video is one of the best modern Flamenco stage performances i have ever seen captured for viewers to deeply experience anytime they are in the mood to be blown away by a "locomotive-like" flamenco troupe... definitely an incredible experience thru a good sound/video system but not a great dance instruction video... perhaps next time, Cortes will take such constructive criticism to heart & spend more time having the camera focusing on his dance routines on film & less on the other aspects of the show... still, this is a "must have" to any gypsy lovers' DVD collection... FANTASTICO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
disservice to a great dancer.......2004-10-03
This dvd makes it impossible to watch the work of a great, magnificent dancer. You barely get to see him dance. There is no image on the screen for more than a few seconds, mostly less - so that you have a headache within 10 minutes of trying to watch. The film-maker needs to go back to film-maker kindergarten! What a shame.
Joaquin Cortes Live at The Royal Albert Hall.......2004-07-15
Bling, Bling, Bling!!!
Joaquin Gets Busy! all you Flamenco Purist out there, put this in your pipe and take a deeeeep inhale. Joaquin shows the
beauty and diversity of Flamenco, as he demonstrates the quality
of his dancing. The beauty of the voices, the beauty of the music
and the dancing is a credit to the beautiful art form called Flamenco! As far as the editing is concerned, I thought it was
appropriate and did'nt take away from the performance. Joaquin shows that Flamenco can extend itself and not lose its form. He
keeps the root of Flamenco intact and allows beautiful flowers to bloom on its branches. Flamenco fundamentalist may cringe while watching this performance, but those with open and creative minds will love it. This is a dvd that Flamenco fans
and dance enthusiast will treasure and enjoy.
Peace, Jamahl.
