(Drama) The story of Beatrix Potter, the author of the beloved and best-selling children's book, "The Tale of Peter Rabbit", and her struggle for love, happiness and success.
Customer Reviews:
About Beatrix Potter.......2007-05-05
A great film, couldn't wait to see it as I been a Beatrix Potter fan for a long time. The director and producer did a great job with this film. Although one area is a little dark (when she is going through her depression,) it is still a movie that children could see, after all, it's life. I wish more films were like Miss Potter. I'd go every week. I can't wait to own this on DVD.
One of the best movies I have ever seen.......2007-05-01
My mother and I had the great luck to be able to see this beautiful film and we have both fallen in love with it. The brilliant portrayal of Edwardian England, the sweet romance between Miss Potter and Mr. Warne and the delightful scenery of the lake distrect combine to make this a movie well worth watching. I love that Zellweger is not made up to be stunningly beautiful--she fills her role of the old maid who is surprised by love in a charming, endearing way. McGregor is perfect in his role as the publisher who loved not only the books but their author.
I grew up on Beatrix Potter but was not familiar with the author. I was pleasently surprised by this movie, and can not wait for it to come out on DVD so I can add it to my collection. This is a must see romance and an excelt look into the stiffling social layers of Edwardian England.
Pleasant & Enchanting.......2007-04-02
When I was invited to view this film, admittedly there were a few reservations. A bio of the famous children's author and illustrator in 19th century England was not at the top of my "must see" film list. Although dragged along hesitantly, the film surpassed all expectations, leaving the theatre believing the world is a better place.
Beatrix Potter is a woman to be admired and a model for young women to emulate even in the 21st century. An artist in the fullest sense of the term, she created animal characters and charming stories that continue to be read by millions of children and their parents today. What makes Potter an example is her devotion to her art form and her diligence to be published in a "man's world".
Renee Zellweger is also a true artist, her acting seemingly getting better and better with every new project. Although her English accent has been the butt of jokes in the British media, she has those difficult nuances down pat when speaking the "Queen's English". For this particular role, she trained with a voice coach to ensure the accents authenticity, as many English actresses, wanting the part of the great English author, were poised and ready to pounce on Zellweger's performance, however, her performance left no room for criticism, as her role was played with subtlety and restraint.
One of the many themes in this wonderful film is England's class snobbery, personified beautifully by Barbra Flynn, as Beatrix mother. Ironically, so-called upper middle-class society and money, as Beatrix so eloquently points out in the film, came from the working and merchant trades of the industrial revolution. When Miss Potter wants to marry her publisher (Ewan McGregor) she is prevented from doing so because he comes from the "trade classes". Beatrix attempts to overcome these hypocritical prejudices, and manages to negotiate a proposal to marry the man; however, the tale takes a serious turn at this point, moving the plot in another direction.
Director Chris Noonan, to my knowledge, has not made a film since his masterpiece, Babe. Interestingly in both films animals have the mind and emotions of people. Noonan has brought that same magical atmosphere of Babe to Miss Potter giving each film an innocent quality without falling into sentimentality.
Miss Potter is an enchanting film, pleasant to watch leaving the viewer feeling amiable and positive about the world.
Inspiring.......2007-03-26
This lovely story of the life of Beatrix Potter is both magical in its depiction of her creativity and in the blossoming romance between Beatrix and her publisher. Girls will be inspired by her quest for purpose and independence. It is beautiful to watch and a lovely way to spend an afternoon.
Feel The Magic.......2007-01-28
Everyone has a movie or two that captures the imagination and transports them away from the everyday and to a place of pure magic. "Miss Potter" is a near perfect film. When the showing finished on a recent Friday evening screening in Dallas, no one moved from their seats. Yes, the audience was an older, experienced group of folks, but I was moved by how many people apparently felt just as I did -- "This is what movies should be like!"
See it, and you too will likely be spreading the word with an almost missionary zeal. I haven't enjoyed a film this much in 20 years!

Science fiction and romance collide in The Fountain, the ambitious third feature from director Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream), who labored for four years to complete this epic-sized love story that stretches across centuries and galaxies. Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz (Aronofsky's real-life companion) play lovers in each of the film's three settings--16th century Europe and America (Jackman is a Spanish explorer searching for Incan magic), the present day (Jackman is a doctor attempting to cure his dying wife), and the 26th century (Jackman is a space traveler seeking a gateway to the afterlife)--who struggle mightily to stay united, only to lose each other time and again. Aronofsky may not have chosen the easiest presentation for audiences to absorb his theories on the lasting qualities of life and the transformative powers of death--the final sequence, in particular, with a bald Jackman floating through space in a bubble, harks back uncomfortably to "head movies" of the late '60s--but his leads have considerable chemistry (and look terrific to boot), which goes a long way towards securing viewers' hopes for a happy ending. Critical reception for The Fountain has been nothing short of bloodthirsty, with Cannes audiences booing, but there are elements to enjoy here, even if the premise throws one for a loop. Ellen Burstyn (who earned an Oscar nomination for Requiem) delivers a typically solid performance as Jackman's boss in the present day sequence, and special effects (most done without the benefit of CGI) are also impressive given the film's low budget (spurred by a mid-production shutdown after original stars Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett ankled the picture). And science-fiction fans whose tastes run towards the metaphysical (Asimov, Le Guin) will appreciate the attempt to present the genre in a serious light. -- Paul Gaita
Description
Yesterday, today, tomorrow. Past, present, future. Through time and space, one man embarks on a bold 1000-year odyssey to defeat humankind's most indomitable foe: Death. Hugh Jackman plays that man, devoted to one woman (Rachel Weisz) and determined to protect her from forces that threaten her existence. His quest leads him to a Tree of Life...and to an adventure into eternity. Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream) directs, continuing his string of imaginative, involving filmmaking with a tale alive with ideas and filled with astonishing vistas. "Not many films can blow your mind and break your heart at the same time, but this one will" (Drew McWeeny, Ain't It Cool News).
Customer Reviews:
As bizarre as it was I loved this film.......2007-07-09
I am a huge Hugh Jackman fan and this film was just wonderful for him. I also love Rachel Weisz. Visually stunning and makes you think. Sometimes films that attempt this kind of story just fall flat, but this one works and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Interesting Movie - No Extra Features.......2007-07-09
This was an interesting movie with some good visuals. The plot was a little hard to follow. I understood the two time-lines easily but the third bald man in the bubble was less clear to me. I read some other reviews and it was still not particularly clear despite the fact that I can usually follow the plot-lines of all but the most obscure movies (Naked Lunch stumped me a decade or more ago as well).
Despite the high cost of the HD DVD there were not extra features.
Incredible Film - Great Story.......2007-07-09
I almost didn't rent this film because of the poor ratings. That would have been a big mistake because I found this film to be a powerful, emotional story full of symbolism. Unlike the other reviewers, I did not find it that complex if you understood the symbolism in the story and felt that it was very well put together and had great images. With so much trash out there where the major movie houses just keep repeating the same themes / ideas / movies over and over, it is wonderfully refreshing to have thought provoking and unique films such as The Fountain to foster and support creativity in ideas and presentation. This film is well worth $0.99 to rent, but it is an emotional film so if you are in the mood for a comedy or mindless action film you should probably look elsewhere... Enjoy! I did!
One of the worst movies of all time The Fouintain ...Spews.......2007-07-08
the title says it all. Save your money, don't rent this. Even for $.99 it was a wasre of money. Despite the 1hr 37 minutes of lousy movie does't really seem like it is that long because the same lousy clips are shown over and over again just to reinforce the agony of watching this film.
Love and Hate.......2007-07-08
Darren Aronofsy's made a great love story! The visuals were beautiful, and it was full of emotion. But you really had to think hard to try to follow what was happening in the film. Granted the story was easy, but the fantasy sequences needed to be explained a little bit better. He didn't quit explain clearly if Hugh Jackman's character was really in the future or had he really been in the past. At one point I thought he was just tripping on something! I love fantasy, but I also love movies that flow and this had a few bumps in the road.

When you consider that old-fashioned tearjerkers are an endangered species in Hollywood, a movie like The Notebook can be embraced without apology. Yes, it's syrupy sweet and clogged with clichés, and one can only marvel at the irony of Nick Cassavetes directing a weeper that his late father John--whose own films were devoid of saccharine sentiment--would have sneered at. Still, this touchingly impassioned and great-looking adaptation of the popular Nicholas Sparks novel has much to recommend, including appealing young costars (Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams) and appealing old costars (James Garner and Gena Rowlands, the director's mother) playing the same loving couple in (respectively) early 1940s and present-day North Carolina. He was poor, she was rich, and you can guess the rest; decades later, he's unabashedly devoted, and she's drifting into the memory-loss of senile dementia. How their love endured is the story preserved in the titular notebook that he reads to her in their twilight years. The movie's open to ridicule, but as a delicate tearjerker it works just fine. Message in a Bottle and A Walk to Remember were also based on Sparks novels, suggesting a triple-feature that hopeless romantics will cherish. --Jeff Shannon

Sweet, charming and sentimental, despite its familiarity..........2007-07-06
I've always been a sucker for the sappy tear-jerkers. I don't know what more I can say in defense other than the fact that I like to be moved to tears. It's a good emotion and it's one that us men too often flee from rather than embrace. That said, as much as this film conventionally falls into genre typecasting and fails to really add too much to the same broken record of the `boy meets girl, boy loves girl, parents ruin everything' synopsis of almost every post-`Romeo&Juliet' romance film, it still has so much good in it that I'm forced to defend it's honor. For one thing it's one of the most beautifully shot films I've seen in a long time. Director Nick Cassavetes does a brilliant job in capturing the feel of the film, the subtle beauty within the environment that only illuminates the subtle beauty of the films stars.
The story may be regurgitated teen romance, but it's sweet to say the least. The poor boy, rich girl visa-versa concept is tired and worn by now, but it seems to be the catalyst for just about every romance film to date so we just have to get used to the idea that original ideas don't exist anymore. They do, they are just hard to come by. The film opens with Duke, played by James Garner, visiting Allie, played by Cassavetes mother Gena Rowland, in a nursing home. She's suffering from Alzheimer's and he comes to read to her. He reads her a story of young love that blossomed into so much more. It becomes apparent that this story is actually the story of how Duke, or Noah, met Allie, how they fell in love, drifted apart and then ultimately were drawn back together.
As Duke reads to Ally we meet their younger selves. Noah Calhoun, played by the electric Ryan Gosling, is a blue collar lumberyard worker who falls for the young, and very rich, Allie Hamilton, played by Rachel McAdams. The two get off to a rocky start but soon become inseparable. Noah proves to be an escape for Allie, an escape from the normal routine of having everything decided for her and never being allowed to decide for herself what's best. Allie lives under the strict thumb of her parents, namely her mother. After a falling out instigated by Allie's parents the two become separated for seven years, in the meantime Allie goes on to become engaged to another man and Noah goes on to purchase his dream home and restore it to the home he promised Allie. Shortly before her wedding Allie finds Noah's face in the paper and decides to see him one last time.
We all know how the story ends, at least for the younger couple. The ending for the older couple is not as dreamy but equally as moving. What really makes this movie work is the chemistry between the cast. Ryan Gosling is a brilliant actor, always has been, and here he is brooding with sex appeal and charm. Rachel McAdams is convincing as seventeen year old Allie, and while I'm not so convinced by her adult version she still does a fine job shuffling her onscreen accent and trying to stand out next to Gosling. James Garner is fantastic here and Gena Rowland is impressive. Surprisingly, as much as this could be labeled chick flick, it's the two male leads that bring the most to the table. Garner's breakdown scene towards the end of the film is heartbreakingly realistic, and Gosling devotes enough charm into his character to make him real and alive.
`The Notebook' may be just another in a long line of sappy teen romance films with the same or very close to the same premise, but it deserves some sort of recognition for sporting a deserving cast and a beautiful canvas for which they are exposed. The script is well written and based on a very well known and much loved Nicholas Sparks novel. My wife claims to prefer the film to the book, but she's never been too much of a reader. I can't say which is greater since I have not read the novel myself, but I can say with certainty that the film adaptation is splendidly entertaining and invested with enough charm and sentiment to make up for it's blatant unoriginality.
"What happens if a car comes?" "We die.".......2007-07-02
A must have! This is by far one of the best movies I've ever watched. After witnessing a few scenes from this movie I just had to go out and buy it and I don't regret it!
"The Notebook" breaks away from the typical kind of chick flick and adds a touch of humor. The movie adds more focus to the character's first Summer together, unlike the book which I found to be quite a snoozer. Also, the character's personalities seems more realistic and have more depth to them as you will discover during their heated arguements. Noah's personality is so dreamy and you can't help but fall in love with him over and over again.
I found many differences between the book and movie, but I won't spoil it for you if you haven't seen either. :3 This movie definately allows you to take a step back and appreciate the relationship you have with your loved one.
Awesome.......2007-06-27
Excellent movie ! A wonderful story about soul mates, soul mates for life. It will bring tears of happiness and sadness. Definitely a feel good movie.
The Notebook.......2007-06-27
I rented this and decided it was one I could enjoy again and again
I figured the story right away which was good as it made it more enjoyable
My favorite movie!.......2007-06-22
I'm glad I finally got to buy this movie, it is one of my favorites. If you want to know what love could do to somebody and how powerful can be just watch this movie and you'll see what love is all about...

When this popular prison drama was released in 1994, some critics complained that the movie was too long (142 minutes) to sustain its story. Those complaints miss the point, because the passage of time is crucial to this story about patience, the squeaky wheels of justice, and the growth of a life-long friendship. Only when the film reaches its final, emotionally satisfying scene do you fully understand why writer-director Frank Darabont (adapting a novella by Stephen King) allows the story to unfold at its necessary pace, and the effect is dramatically rewarding. Tim Robbins plays a banker named Andy who's sent to Shawshank Prison on a murder charge, but as he gets to know a life-term prisoner named Red (Morgan Freeman), we realize there's reason to believe the banker's crime was justifiable. We also realize that Andy's calm, quiet exterior hides a great reserve of patience and fortitude, and Red comes to admire this mild-mannered man who first struck him as weak and unfit for prison life. So it is that The Shawshank Redemption builds considerable impact as a prison drama that defies the conventions of the genre (violence, brutality, riots) to illustrate its theme of faith, friendship, and survival. Nominated for seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, Actor, and Screenplay, it's a remarkable film that signaled the arrival of a promising new filmmaker--a film that many movie lovers count among their all-time favorites. --Jeff Shannon

Shawshank brilliance.......2007-07-04
If you've not seen this movie, you're long overdue. It's a wonderful movie with moving performances by terrific actors. There are lots of good extras on this Special Edition.
The Shawshank Redemption.......2007-06-08
Order was received sooner than expected ... in excellent condition. Was very pleased.
Great Movie.......2007-05-28
I bought this movie because I read the book Differnt Seasons (by Stephen King) that has this story in it. The book was great and so was the movie. The plot is the same but the story is a little differnt in the movie. This is one of the few movies as good as the book. My only complaint is that the movie would mot play on Windows Media Player on my computer, instead I had to install InterActual Player. I personaly did not see the point of that.
Hope.......2007-05-23
As Tim Robbins' character writes in this movie "Hope is a good thing...", and this movie gives us hope that intelligent movies might still be made in Hollywood.
Great move.......2007-05-16

Will Farrell followed up his star-making vehicle Elf, which matched his fine-tuned comic obliviousness to a sweet sincerity, with a more arrogant variation on the same character: Ron Burgundy, a macho, narcissistic news anchor from the 1970s. Along with his news posse--roving reporter Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd, Clueless), sports guy Champ Kind (David Koechner), and dim-bulb weatherman Brick Tamland (Steve Carell, Bruce Almighty)--Burgundy rules the roost in San Diego, fawned upon by groupies and supported by a weary producer (Fred Willard, Best In Show) who tolerates Burgundy's ego because of good ratings. But when Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate, View from the Top) arrives with ambitions to become an anchor herself, she threatens the male-dominated newsroom. Anchorman has plenty of funny material, but it's as if Farrell couldn't decide what he really wanted to mock, and so took smart-ass cracks at everything in sight. Still, there are moments of inspired delirium. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
Funniest moved EVER!.......2007-07-03
My husband and I both LOVE this movie! It is laugh out loud funny from beginning to end. Everyone I have recommended it to says the same. You can't beat Will Farrell!
Ferrell's Redemption Complete.......2007-06-30
After the crime against all that is decent otherwise know as Bewitched (Special Edition), I have come back around to giving Will Ferrell movies a chance and I was glad I did so with "Anchorman". What could have been another unmitigated disaster turned out to be a very funny story about 1970's sexism and news teams.
Veronica Corningstone takes a new position with the Channel 4 news team and finds herself surrounding by egotistical male chauvinists. Not that she is any damsel in distress, as she can more than handle her own and she has plenty of ambition to go with it. The love thing between her and the lead anchor, Ron Burgundy, make things all the more interesting.
With cameo parts played by Ben Stiller, Tim Robbins, and a minor role with Vince Vaughn, this movie certainly gave the story a good shot. There is a lot of "silly" humour, but it is all very good. The comedy covers a variety of bases from the purely ridiculous to the situational and more. It is a diverse movie in this sense.
I enjoyed this movie a whole lot, and have seen it a few times now. Although not something you would want to overdo, it is an enjoyable laugh at when "times were changing".

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy
Released on July 9, 2004
Written by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay
Directed by Adam McKay
Anchorman is a very funny movie, but it is inconsistent in tone. They do anything for a laugh, and ad libbing was encouraged by director Adam McKay, but it often veers off track, and the story is pretty stupid. It just doesn't make sense, half the time. That being said, it has some of the funniest scenes ever filmed, and I'm sure there were a lot of laughs, on screen and off.
It begins with the following narration, spoken by announcer Bill Lawson: "There was a time, a time before cable. When the local anchorman reigned supreme. When people believed everything they heard on TV. This was an age when only men were allowed to read the news. And in San Diego, one anchorman was more man then the rest. His name was Ron Burgundy. He was like a god walking amongst mere mortals. He had a voice that could make a wolverine purr and suits so fine they made Sinatra look like a hobo. In other words, Ron Burgundy was the balls."
There is the movie in a nutshell. It is very funny in spurts, but spins out of control just as often. The problem is that the funniest parts could also be the out of control ones. Will Ferrell is excellent as Ron Burgundy, all empty headed and puffed up with self importance. There are great scenes of the news team doing the purposeful walk, wearing 70s style suits, it is so right on and true to the period.
Another problem is the theme of a woman breaking into the male dominated world of TV News. It tries to be too PC, and that gets in the way of the comedy. Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate) doesn't know if she wants to play it as a professional or a conniving slattern. Does she loath Ron Burgundy or love him? If she is as intelligent as she appears, then how could she love someone as ignorant as Burgundy? Should the movie mock her, or should it just mock Ron and the other male chauvinists?
I like the part where Ron Burgundy comes home and talks to his dog, Baxter. Also outstanding was the scene where Ron Burgundy jams at a jazz club with his flute. There is a running gag where the other news teams rumble, and one of them gets his arm ripped off. Later, when everyone is trying to cover the Panda being born at the San Diego Zoo, he is shown with one arm. I just wish they could have shown as much care for the other plot lines that led nowhere.
I want to emphasize that I think this is a very funny movie, and I recommend it, but it gets silly at times. There are some very funny people in it. Paul Rudd, David Koechner, Steve Carrell, Jack Black, Ben Stiller, Fred Armisen, Vince Vaughn, Fred Willard, Owen Wilson, and Chris Parnell, as well as co-anchors Will Ferrell and Christina Applegate. Four of them have double L's in their names.
Good Night, San Diego, Stay Classy.
Wake Up Ron Burgundy - you're brilliant.......2007-05-24
Fantastic fun! Loved Anchorman in the cinema (nearly choked to death on my popcorn your know - ah, good times) and the DVD is even better with the additional full length movie 'Wake Up Ron Burgundy'. The extras are great too, especially Ron's ESPN job interview and his MTV Awards interview with JC.
Anchorman is definately in my Top 10 favourites and its keeping some pretty impressive company in there too, I can tell you.
So buy it and laugh your socks off. Just be careful to swallow your popcorn properly young man!
Maybe don't wear a bra next time.......2007-05-16
"You have an absolutely breathtaking heiny. I mean, that thing is good. I wanna be friends with it".
Anchorman Ron Burgundy has so many smooth pickup lines in this movie, it's super-hilarious. (Don't try them at home though).
Will Ferrell got the idea for this movie by watching some 70's footage of news coverage. A bunch of dorky white dudes in bad polyester suits, reading the newscast while smoking, drinking, and cussing. It was so unintentionally funny, a movie had to be made.
And this movie is purposely a laugh riot. One of the best recent comedies (which isn't saying much).
Ron is so egotistical and spurts out crazy random things. He and his male coworkers are enraged when the studio decides to bring in a female reporter. This disgust quickly subsides when she is declared "fair game" and they all take a run at her. Whammy! let the games begin...
Anchorman has awesome cameos by Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Owen and Luke Wilson. Tim Robbins, and Jack Black. You can't go wrong.
"So whatd'ya say we grab some chicken, have some sex, you know, see what happens"? Like see this movie!

Winner of eight Academy Awards, including Best Director (Bob Fosse), Best Actress (Liza Minnelli), and Best Supporting Actor (Joel Grey), Cabaret would also have taken Best Picture if it hadn't been competing against The Godfather as the most acclaimed film of 1972. (Francis Ford Coppola would have to wait two years before winning Best Director, for The Godfather, Part II.) Brilliantly adapted from the acclaimed stage production, which was in turn inspired by Christopher Isherwood's Berlin Stories and the play and movie I Am a Camera, this remarkable musical turns the pre-war Berlin of 1931 into a sexually charged haven of decadence. Minnelli commands the screen as nightclub entertainer Sally Bowles, who radiantly goes on with the show as the Nazis rise to power, holding her many male admirers (including Michael York and Helmut Griem) at a distance that keeps her from having to bother with genuinely deep emotions. Joel Grey is the master of ceremonies at the Kit Kat Klub who will guarantee a great show night after night as a way of staving off the inevitable effects of war and dictatorship. They're all living in a morally ambiguous vacuum of desperate anxiety, determined to keep up appearances as the real world--the world outside the comfortable sanctuary of the cabaret--prepares for the nightmarish chaos of war. Director-choreographer Fosse achieves a finely tuned combination of devastating drama and ebullient entertainment, and the result is one of the most substantial screen musicals ever made. The dual-layered Special Edition widescreen DVD includes an exclusive 25th-anniversary documentary, Cabaret: A Legend in the Making, a 1972 promotional featurette, a photo gallery, production notes, the theatrical trailer, and more. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Willkommen, bienvenue, welcome to Cabaret. The winner of eight Academy Awards, it boasts a score by the legendary songwriting partnership behind another film that would energize the movie musical genre with equal razzle-dazzle 30 years later: Chicago's John Kander and Fred Ebb. Inside the Kit Kat Club of 1931 Berlin, starry-eyed singer Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli) and an impish emcee (Joel Grey) sound the clarion call to decadent fun, while outside a certain political party grows into a brutal force. Cabaret caught lightning (and won Oscars) for Minnelli, Grey and director Bob Fosse, who shaped a triumph of style and substance. Come to this Cabaret, old chum. You'll never want to leave.
DVD Features:
Documentary:25th-Anniversary Documentary "Cabaret: A Legend in the Making"
Featurette:"The Recreation of An Era"

Production Notes:"Kit Kat Klub Memory Gallery": The film's stars and creators reminisce about making movie musical history.

I'm going like Elsie!!!.......2007-07-05
This movie shows Berlin at it's finest/Darkest hour. Even with a war going on people still managed to have a great time and forget about the dark cloud above their heads. Liza as Sally Bowles was pure genius. Whenever you have self doubt watch this movie and u will have a whole new look on how u live ur life....
Cabaret.......2007-07-03
Fosse's groundbreaking "Cabaret," a Broadway musical-turned-showstopping film event, was itself based on a novel by Christopher Isherwood. While the film considers Germany's dark, historic slide from Weimar decadence into fascism from an intriguing angle, it's the effusive, stylishly choreographed song-sequences that elevate the film to classic status. Minnelli was never better as the brash, electrifying Sally, especially belting out "Money" or the Dietrich-like "Tomorrow Belongs to Me." And who can forget Joel Grey, the Kit Kat's eccentric, ghastly master of ceremonies? Winner of eight Oscars, "Cabaret" is a flamboyant knockout.
A flashy but ultimately unmoving film.......2007-06-22
Cabaret contains some great musical numbers - but the accompanying story is less compelling.
Michael York plays a stiff Englishman Brian Roberts newly arrived in 1930s Germany just as the Nazis are coming to power. He meets dancer/prostitute Sally Bowles played by Liza Minelli who works at the seedy Kit Kat club. Many of the musical numbers are set at the club and counterpoint the story.
Both York's and Minelli's characters are hard to like. They are morally corrupt and at the end of the film they end up right where they started - without seemingly having learning anything.
Minelli copped an Oscar for her performance and there is little doubt that in the musical numbers she is a knockout - as an actress, however, she is somewhat limited. Joel Grey also won an Oscar as the grotesque "Master of Proceedings" at the Kit Kat club.
Despite the trappings the film provides little atmosphere of 1930s Germany, no doubt hampered by its low budget. "Cabaret" is flashy but somewhat empty.
The picture on the DVD transfer is grainy but the sound is OK.
Cabaret DVD.......2007-05-07
After recently seeing the stage show version, I bought the DVD ...and I liked it better than the stage show. It was easier to understand.
Enduring entertainment.......2007-03-08
I saw Cabaret many years ago and loved it. After watching it again on DVD the other evening, I realized it's just as entertaining now as it was then because it hasn't lost its freshness. Another realization was that the anti-intolerance message is just as pertinent today as it was then. In fact, it may be even more important today to realize the danger in mob psychology. A message with great music and a love story!!! What a deal.

Meg Ryan emerges bloodied but unbowed from this botched comedy by Lawrence Kasdan (The Big Chill). Ryan plays a woman whose fiancé (Timothy Hutton) leaves her for a Parisian beauty. She jets over to the City of Lights to fight for her man, but an incapacitating fear of flying forces her to seek help from a fellow passenger, a French thief played by Kevin Kline, who then tutors her in the ways of getting her beau back. Kasdan seems incapable of pacing the story, let alone getting a firm grip on its comic tone and intentions. The production sputters and regroups and stalls repeatedly, forcing Ryan, particularly, to find the boundaries of her own screwball performance. --Tom Keogh
Description
Meg Ryan ("Sleepless in Seattle") and Kevin Kline ("Dave") star in this bouncy romantic comedy about life, love and larceny. When her fiancé is smitten by a beautiful Frenchwoman, Kate (Ryan) flies to Paris determined to win him back. However, nothing prepares her for Luc (Kline), a cunning sexy Frenchman with a gift for gab and a fondness for thievery. A self-proclaimed expert on affairs of the heart, Luc promises to help Kate win back her man. But one star-crossed misadventure after another sweeps them across France, ultimately changing them in ways they never dreamed possible.

Not bad for a rainy afternoon........2007-06-25
This movie isn't one that I would go to the movies to see, but is worth watching on a rainy afternoon at home. It's cute, and will do in a pinch. I'd buy it again for that purpose.
Lots of fun.......2007-06-16
The more I watch this film, the more I love it. It's funny, well-paced and Meg and Kevin (as always) are great!
All Time Favorite Girly Movie!.......2007-04-04
My college roommates and I watched the VHS version of this movie so many times we wore the tape out. Bad day at the internship, boyfriend broke up with you, need a good movie to nap to while skipping class...this is your movie! I was so happy to find it on Amazon and even happier that it arrived so quickly and in brand new condition!
Comical Romance.......2007-03-21
I just love this movie. I have seen it at least 10 times if not more and it is one that i just have not tired of. It's a great blend of comedy and romance. Meg Ryan and Kevin Klien make an interesting couple and the scattering of other French and Euro charters makes this a must have for my little library of romance movies.
One of the best performances by these actors.......2007-03-19
Wow, great movie! Keeps you laughing and brings a few tears as well. I think the actors do a great job and give one of their best and most mature performances ever.

Each of the snazzy 25-minute installments from the most popular Japanese animated TV series of 1998 is a satisfying adventure tale about a futuristic hipster bounty hunter. This is an elegant action-comedy anime, with smoothly integrated CGI space-flight elements, gorgeous graphics, blues harmonica and sax riffs on the soundtrack, and a no-sweat post-Tarantino attitude. Despite occasional eruptions of gun-fu Asian-action violence, and some intimations of heavy-duty drug use (in the first of 26 episodes, one especially noxious narcotic is administered as an aerosol spray straight onto the user's eyeballs), the tone is surprisingly convivial. None of the generic tough elements are grim or mean-spirited. Lanky antihero Spike Spiegel is a planet-hopping freelance hunter with an ex-cop sidekick named Jet, a loopy fellow hunter named Faye, a teenage computer hack, and a genetically enhanced Welsh corgi assistant in tow. The emphasis is on clever twists of plot in an episodic short-story format with as many wisecracks as punches being thrown. --David Chute
Description
Meet Spike and Jet, a drifter and a retired cyborg cop. They've formed a partnership in a bounty hunting enterprise that specializes in adventure and cash. Using an old converted fishing ship called the Bebop, with the help of the intelligent data dog, Ein, the mysterious and vexing femme fatale, Faye Valentine, and Ed, the genius hacker -- Spike and Jet scour the galaxy to clean up space, one bounty at a time.
* Considered one of the best anime of all time in both Japan AND the United States. * Cowboy Bebop is now available as a special DVD collection box set that contains all six DVD's from Cowboy Bebop packaged with the Cowboy Bebop Original Soundtrack CD in a collectors box.
Customer Reviews:
Just, grate........2007-06-13
I got it right on time. The dvd's where not opened (new set) I would buy from this guy any time.
A great show that is almost impossible to get legitimately.......2007-06-05
Ok, so Cowboy Bebop is a great show. Here's the deal. The sellers who are selling this new are selling you a bootleg. The set simply isn't being manufactured anymore. The real thing has 7 discs all together 6 DVDs, and 1 Audio CD. The sets that sre being sold here (unless they are used and expensive) are usually 3 discs, maybe 4 or 5 if they throw in a copy of the movie, and the soundtrack. So, please be aware of this. I wasn't when I went into this, and wound up with a $50 bootleg.
So, what does that mean for you, the person who wants the show, but doesn't want to sign over their firstborn? Well, the set isn't too bad. The episodes are compressed down to 9 per disc. Some people have complained about the video, or audio. I found it pretty good! If your trying to watch this on your whiz-bang 90 bajillion inch HDTV, then I'm sure you'll notice some artifacting, and things like that. But then you can probably afford to shell out a minimum of $125 (or $350 for the legitimate Perfect Sessions) for a 26 episode TV show. For the rest of you the video is of suprising quality as is the audio. The languages, and subtitles are intact.
I'll admit that I am somewhat morally conflicted over this. The people who created the show deserve to be compensated for it. But I feel that I paid a fair price ($49, when it's as cheap as $25) and that if Bandai was REALLY that interested in milking a few more bucks out of me they'd make a less expensive set. Just be sure that you get the FX copy, and you'll be ok.
Put Your Fears to Rest, This DVD set is Amazing!.......2007-05-29
If you've been looking at the price suspiciously as I did, and you've read the reviews here and there about these being shoddy bootlegs, put your fears to rest. Sure these may be made by some pis-ant company in China, but the quality is fine, great even. This is an incredible deal, the ENTIRE series starting at about $25! (I don't use exclamation points lightly). In your copy there might be a discruntled pixle in an episode or two, but for the price I think that is well worth the risk. I'm sure I don't need to tell you how great this series is, the real concern is about the quality of the DVD's themselves. They're awsome.
oh yeah baby, yeah1!!.......2007-05-21
oh, im so excited. i love cowboy bebop!! three discs, great quality, but I dont think that subtitles can be turned off. Comes in english, japanese with english subs, english with japanese subs. Nothing wrong here, perfect, loved it, great series, lots of shoot em up and great story line. Get it!!
Limited Edition is not in print - beware of cheap 3 disc set.......2007-04-18
First of all, Cowboy Bebop is an amazing collection of animation. The stories and characters are very involving. I originally caught an episode on Adult Swim and was hooked, so I had to get the whole set.
Cowboy Bebop has been released on DVD in many different versions. Beware or you will not get what you expect. The original series was first released on 6 individual discs. These are available used. Later, The Perfect Sessions 6 DVD boxed set was released in limited quantities at an MSRP of $250. Each box is numbered. These are no longer available for sale except on auction sites. Cowboy Bebop Remix is the a 6 DVD set containing a Dolby surround remix of the original audio.

Bob Fosse's sexy cynicism still shines in Chicago, a faithful movie adaptation of the choreographer-director's 1975 Broadway musical. Of course the story, all about merry murderesses and tabloid fame, is set in the Roaring '20s, but Chicago reeks of '70s disenchantment--this isn't just Fosse's material, it's his attitude, too. That's probably why the movie's breathless observations on fleeting fame and fickle public taste already seem dated. However, Renée Zellweger and Catherine Zeta-Jones are beautifully matched as Jazz Age vixens, and Richard Gere gleefully sheds his customary cool to belt out a showstopper. (Yes, they all do their own singing and dancing.) Whatever qualms musical purists may have about director Rob Marshall's cut-cut-cut style, the film's sheer exuberance is intoxicating. Given the scarcity of big-screen musicals in the last 25 years, that's a cause for singing, dancing, cheering. And all that jazz. --Robert Horton
Description
Winner of six Academy Awards(R) (2003) including Best Picture, and starring Academy Award nominee (Best Actress, CHICAGO) and Golden Globe winner (Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, CHICAGO) Renée Zellweger (BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY), Academy Award winner (Best Supporting Actress, CHICAGO) Catherine Zeta-Jones (TRAFFIC), Academy Award nominee (Best Supporting Actress, CHICAGO) Queen Latifah (BRINGING DOWN THE HOUSE), Golden Globe winner (Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, CHICAGO) Richard Gere (UNFAITHFUL), and Academy Award nominee (Best Supporting Actor, CHICAGO) John C. Reilly (GANGS OF NEW YORK) -- CHICAGO is a dazzling spectacle cheered by audiences and critics alike! At a time when crimes of passion result in celebrity headlines, nightclub sensation Velma Kelly (Zeta-Jones) and spotlight-seeking Roxie Hart (Zellweger) both find themselves sharing space on Chicago's famed Murderess Row! They also share Billy Flynn (Gere), the town's slickest lawyer with a talent for turning notorious defendants into local legends. But in Chicago, there's only room for one legend! Also starring Lucy Liu (CHARLIE'S ANGELS).

Shallow and Frivolous .......2007-06-28
After many years of wanting to see this film, I finally got a chance to view it. I like musicals and loved Moulin Rouge, so I thought I'd give this one a try. However, after viewing, I was a bit puzzled at all the fuss and acclaim this movie received and continues to receive.
Chicago, while visually stunning and artistically impressive (in that the actors did their own singing), is a shallow, cynical, superficial, and unsympathetic story. Most movies rely upon story and plot for their strength; not so Chicago, whose only redeeming quality is the song and dance they put on.
The main problem with the story is that there are virtually no sympathetic main characters. To take that a step further, the main characters are all frauds, and the story's message is shallow. The two somewhat redeeming characters, Roxie's husband and the woman who is hanged, are both pretty much invisible and discarded in the film. Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly are both in jail for murder, and both have hopes and dreams of making it, being a big star, and having people adore them, so they call upon a slimebag attorney, Billy Flynn, to help them out. Roxie and Velma take turns lying and deceiving each other so they can get the fame in Chicago. Roxie openly admits she cheated on her husband, is oblivious to the fact that he's spent his life savings to get her a lawyer, and uses every trick in the book (including pretending that she has an illegitimate child) to ensure that she is the center of the newspaper headlines. Velma is a conceited fame-hungry snob who bribes the prison ward and only sucks up to Roxie when she realizing she is losing the fame war. From here we have a battle over popularity, as the two think of shenanigans to steal the headlines from each other. Who will win out? Who cares.
The message basically projected in this film is that its legitimate to whatever it takes to get ahead in this world--lie, cheat, steal, commit adultery--and, in fact, it might make you a star!
Are we are suppose to root for two back-stabbing, deceitful, murderesses who walk over people just to get their claim to fame all because they can sing and dance? Or how about a double-crossing, pompous, lying, money-hungry lawyer looking for the next damsel charged with murder? No thanks. I say throw them all in jail.
Watching this film, I found it mystifying how so many people and critics could love this movie so much. Granted the story's plot has probably changed from the musical version on stage, but the movie version falls quite short of its glowing reviews. Moreover, how could this film have received six Oscars in 2002? I liken the Oscar committee of 2002 to the gullible Chicago citizens in the film, falling over and swooning at something that puts on a little song and dance. Maybe Chicago was the Academy Award's apology for Moulin Rouge not getting any Oscars the previous year.
If you want to see a musical that is vastly superior, has heart, style and substance, and better acting, see Moulin Rouge.
Chicago IS jazz hot!.......2007-06-08
One of the best musicals of all time. Rapid paced, great story line, great actors, fantastic scenery... I can't say enough about everything this musical has going for it!!! A definite for your collection.
Loved it -- Fantastic Music and Great Cinematography.......2007-05-17
This is one of my very favorite movie musicals. The songs are so great and so much fun!
My favorite part about this movie though, is the way in which it constantly cuts back and forth between simultaneous shots of what the characters are doing in the "movie" version and what they are doing in the "stage" version of the story. It is this symmetrical blending of the two arts that really appeals to me, and the cinematography is very well done.
Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger, Richard Gere, John C. Reilly, and Queen Latifah all put on award-winning performances. I was especially impressed with Gere's and Reilly's performances. (Lucy Liu's small part was nice simply because she is so gorgeous, LOL, but she really is only a brief side character.)
This is the best and most enjoyable stage-musical-to-movie adaptation that I have yet seen, and I highly recommend it. Is it the best movie-musical ever? Probably not, I'd have to vote for The Sound Of Music, but even so, I find myself watching Chicago more often than TSOM. And Moulin Rouge is even funnier than Chicago, but I still love Chicago's songs the best.
Great Musical!.......2007-04-10
This is the musical for people who hate musicals! My kids and I all belt out the words when the songs come--each song is so unique and original. This really is an incredible film--the acting is perfect--I love the casting. Catherine Zeta Jones is so powerful, as is Renee Z. Ruchard Gere is at his best, as well, which was a cool surprise!
Bob Fosse lives on!.......2007-04-02
The dance and music and lyrics of Bob Fosse is still going strong, and it is evident through the big-screen adaptation of "Chicago". Director Rob Marshall stays faithful to Fosse's Broadway intentions, though he does change many things with the way the songs are performed (all songs are sung in reverie settings). Renee Zellweger and Richard Gere are very good when going along with their solos ("They Both Reached for the Gun" is fun and funny), but John C. Reilly, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Queen Latifah steal the show with their dazzling vocals ("Mister Cellophane", "When You're Good to Mama" and "I Can't Do It Alone" are well worth the oscar wins).
This movie is a splendid achievement, and if you don't even like musicals, then you'll probably be surprised at how much you're going to love this film.

This kinky love story features a standout performance by Maggie Gyllenhaal, an offbeat young actress in her first starring role. Gyllenhaal plays Lee, a nervous girl who compulsively cuts herself, who gets a job as a secretary for Edward, an imperious lawyer (James Spader, an old hand at tales of perverse affection). Edward's reprimands for typos and spelling errors begin with mild humiliation, but as Lee responds to his orders--which are driven as much by his own anxieties and fears as any sense of order--the punishments escalate to spankings, shackles, and more. Secretary walks a fine line. It finds sly humor in these sadomasochistic doings without turning them into a gag, and it takes Lee and Edward's mutual desires seriously without getting self-righteous or pompous. Certainly not a movie for everyone, but some people may be unexpectedly stirred up by this smart and steamy tale of repressed passion. --Bret Fetzer

not softcore not good enuf for TV.......2007-06-14
DON'T BE DECEIVED BY THE COVER - NO STOCKINGS, NO HEELS. ONE BRIEF SPANKING SCENE (no flesh included) is the highlight of the film. Perhaps lifestylers would get nostalgic about this story, but for the curious weekend thrill seeker this DVD is sure to disappoint, if not get you 'shut out'. Definitely not a couples movie unless your lady is VERY much into BDSM, in which case this would only be a 101 level course if not a grade school primer. Don't judge a DVD by its cover!!
Someone needs a spanking.......2007-06-07
James Spader must be one truly sexually disturbed man. Most of his work seems to revolve around men whose proclivities are far from healthy. From Crash to Sex, Lies, and Videotape, James Spader seeks out sexual encounters that are distant, shallow, and self-destructive as well as demeaning. He continues in good form here in a rather entertaining piece on sado-masochism. Sexual harassment be damned!
My Favourite Film ;}.......2007-05-26
This is my favourite film of all time. A perfectly dark comedy and strange fairy tale romance rolled into one, "Secretary" shocked and enraptured me from the start. I couldn't ask for a more captivating storyline, carefully written script, complete character development, or perfectly executed performances! You MUST see this film... ;}
A new love story with a fun twist..........2007-05-06
Quirky, kinky, sensual, beautiful and fun!
James Spader and Maggie Gyllenhaal both have wonderful performances! Steven Shainberg put together a great film with more substance then may be expected from a love story. That said, be warned that if you are uncomfortable with the idea of bdsm being anything other then a sickness then "keep on walking" because this is not a movie for you.
One of the things I liked most was the depth of character development. Gyllenhaal and Spader had fantastic chemistry and were able to pack so much emotion and communication in to simple expressions and gestures. I can't say enough good things about the work they have done here.
As for the story, I LOVE IT! Both Mr. Grey (Spader) and Lee (Gyllenhaal) start out in dark places. Lee is drifting in life and has taken to cutting herself. Mr. Grey is alone and disgusted with himself. Both struggle with "unnatural" feelings and a sense of detachment, they just don't feel normal. By the end they have learned that it is OK not to be normal so long as you are who and what you are. They fine that together they are complete. A very satisfying ending!
This movie is for the wild at heart.......2007-04-11
This is a movie that is not for everyone. It is rich in emotions and goes way beyound some people's comfort levels. But I enjoyed it because there was a such an amazing finale that shouted originality. The 2 stars are perfect together and you totally want them to end up together. Maggie takes a job as a secretary- she has extreme self esteem problems and was just released from an institution. She starts working for Spader and he goes completely nuts when she makes even the most trivial mistakes and starts his own form of wierd erotic punishment. Most people would freak out but she starts to want it- and thus we have the start of a beautiful relationship full of wierdness. This is a love story and it is one of my faves because it is just soo different and lovely.
If you are a fan of James Spader then you should totally see this, and if you haven't seen Maggie Gyllenhaal you NEED to see this. I left this movie wanting to see it again and again.
