Written by Peter Guralnick (Lost Highway) and narrated by Jeffrey Wright, Sam Cooke - Legend is a stirring look at a singular talent. Produced for VH1 but expanded from the original broadcast, this tuneful documentary can't possibly examine every detail of the late singer-songwriter's life in a mere 70 minutes. Nonetheless, Guralnick, who has overseen the reissue of several Cooke CDs, has put together a surprisingly thorough biography. Destination points include Cooke's gospel roots, groundbreaking career decisions, and forays into the civil rights movement. The story is fleshed out by vintage performance and interview clips (the chats with Dick Clark are particularly insightful). Commentators include family members and fellow performers like Aretha Franklin, Lou Rawls, and Bobby Womack, while musical highlights include Cooke's version of Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind" (a song he wished he had written) and a breezy duet with friend Cassius Clay (soon to become Muhammad Ali). --Kathleen C. This DVD is wonderful for those of us who were young when Sam Cooke was popular and doing so many great things such as owning, writing, and producing his own music. I enjoy his talent today some 43 years later now that's classics for you. I wish he had stayed with The Lord and let the world come to him instead of the other way around. I just believe his outcome would have been much different but that's neither here nor there at this point. The man was great and God was good to loan him to us. KS

The Late Great Legend.......2007-01-15

I am a youngster, but I am grateful to have grown up on good music. Sam Cooke
was one of those singers whose songs sent you anywhere he wanted you to go
with his awesome , soulful voice, and heartfelt lyrics. This DVD is a must have if you are into real music. Sam Cooke sang from the very depth of his soul and will always be remembered for that very fact. I was highly impressed
with how well this DVD was put together and how informative it was especially for those who may not be too familiar with this late legend. Five stars!!

This is a must have DVD. Excellent production and acting. It did not give as much detail concerning the end of his life but otherwise it appeared to be a great story of the Legend and Artist Sam Cooke. Excellent!!!

The Late Great "Sam Cooke" Music Lives On.......2006-07-03

I very much enjoyed Sam Cooke Legend. The important part was to see his moves while he performed. I enjoyed the testimonies of other artist/singers like The "Queen of Soul" Aretha Franklin, Lou Rawls, Bobby Womack and Sam Cooke's family and all those who worked with him while he lived.

Many tell me I sing like Sam Cooke,but I believe there was only one Sam Cooke and unreplaceable!

IF god had a voice this is how he would sound,yes i too would love to see the footage of what i think is the greatest rb song ever written, a change is gonna come, but hey whats here is awesome! Sam died 3 years before i was born and I know how great he was!
