Filmed in Berlin in 1997, this good-looking production finds the aging bluesman mixing his classic covers with more recent material, all for an appreciative audience in a startlingly dramatic venue. Warming up with "Could You Be Loved" and "Feeling Alright," Cocker soon finds his footing and launches into the Scotch whiskey soul of "Have a Little Faith," the kinky comedy of "You Can Leave Your Hat On," and the gospel-flushed agony of "When the Night Comes." A take on Van Morrison's "Into the Mystic" is welcome, while "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" mines the old Animals chestnut for further blues testimony. The crumpled valentine of "You Are So Beautiful" is touchingly familiar and dedicated, on this occasion, to the late Princess Diana. In all, Cocker is in very good, professional form here, a tempered force of nature, perhaps, but an expressive stylist of mature conviction. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Joe Cocker Live.......2007-01-15

He still can belt out a tune. For me every song was good. No buyers remorse here.

4 out of 5 stars Berlin Stories.......2005-09-14

Stupendous account of all Cocker's greatest hits, plus some miscellaneous tracks that Cocker management hoped wlould launch a second cemback for the Sheffield-born "monster voice" who brought down the house at Woodstock way back when, but in recent years he's been more of a Heritage Rock act, that is, if people remember him at all. Even John Belushi's imitation of him has lost some of its punch for we aren't accustomed to seeing the two-ton powerhouse flail spastically, his head bobbing up and down towards the skies, then back to the footlights, on our stages on a regular basis. Be that as it may, Cocker's comeback didn't really take. "Across From Midnight" is a sturdy enough tune but it won't set young hearts afire--middle aged ones either, and I don't think you'll harm yourself by skipping forward this one on the DVD.

The amazing this is the power this man generates at age 55. Mehtinks he'll be going this way at age 80, astonishing when we thought he would never live till he his 30th birthday. He seemed like one of those mutant freaks like Rondo Hatton born to have an early disabling death. And here he is still going strong when seemingly healhier specimens have long retired or even gone to their graves to push up the daisies.

I always thought putting Joe Cocker in THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA would be a good idea.

He has the angelic beast sounds that you need for a good rousing rendition of MUSIC OF THE NIGHT.

Here he moans his way through CRY ME A RIVER with much of the power of the old days, and puts Leon Russell in the shade with his majestic, tormented DELTA LADY, which he might try reviving now for Katrina Relief, I think it would go down a storm. I saw him in 2002 and he had sensibly enough dropped the failed "Across from Midnight" from his set list and was once agaion concentrating on the old tried and trues like THE LETTER, UP WHERE WE BELONG, SUMMER IN THE CITY and of course, WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS. More power to him and long may he gargle!

5 out of 5 stars JOE COCKER LIVE-ACROSS FROM MIDNIGHT TOUR.......2005-07-30

FOUND THIS DVD TO BE A GREAT VIEW. SAW JOE AT CHINOOK WINDS CASINO -LINCOLN CITY,OR 3/4/05 AND HE WAS STILL AS GREAT AS EVER IN PERFORMING.

5 out of 5 stars Exhilarating Concert Experience!!.......2005-06-23

Everything came together brilliantly for this concert experience! Joe Cocker seems ageless in his pursuit of his music. A seasoned professional, he just makes it look easy to entertain in concert. Plus, Joe's voice has gotten richer and more textured with age.

From rockers like "Feelin' Alright" to ballads like "Have A Little Faith In Me" to funky numbers like "You Can Leave Your Hat On" this concert moves at a continuous steady pace of energy!

In addition, these cooking musicians are some of the best in the business. Mood lighting for each song was well orchestrated by the lighting designer. The soulful and lively background singers add their own spice to the mix. And the audience's reaction indicates their being swept up with the intensity of the show.

A great concert to watch again and again. "Lucky you" will always feel as if you have a front row seat!!

4 out of 5 stars The Best Live Performance Available from Joe!!!.......2003-06-24

This is a great concert from a legend who seems to get better with age. He's transformed that voice into a very interesting instrument.

Shot in Germany over two nights, You get the feel for sheer power of a full band outdoors live. The only gripe I have is that I really don't want to see crowd shots during the performances. Keep the cameras pointed at the stage!
The band is made up of some of the best session musicans and backing vocals in the business. It's loud, extremely tight and full of sound with multiple keyboards, Hammond organ and a great sax player. Backing vocals Maxine Sharpe and Stacy Campbell are fantastic.

Of all the videos out there of Joe performing - including his most recent DVD of "Respect Yourself" - this performance to promote "Across Midnight" is his best. For those who do not like the highly produced sound of Joe's efforts in the past decade, you'll enjoy a couple of tracks from his "Organic" CD. Plus a great mix of his classics including Delta Lady and Cry Me A River. I really like the full "wall of sound" delivered in "The Letter". Wow.

Buy this one and leave the others alone. I've shown this to friends who have a mild interest in Joe and now can't wait to see him live. He's a hard working guy that really delivers a great show and is out on the road performing each year.
