Recorded in December 1999 before a massive and wildly enthusiastic French audience, this Cranberries concert is remarkable testimony to the Irish band's seasoning, evolving confidence, and heightened sense of fun in the years since the release of their breakthrough hit singles ("Linger," "Zombie," "Ode to My Family," all performed here). Fans who saw the Limerick-born group's early- '90s tours recognized in singer-songwriter Dolores O'Riordan equal parts gamine, witch, and an inspirational incarnation of W.B. Yeats's Glimmering Girl. Now, however, Beneath the Skin: Live in Paris underscores O'Riordan's more relaxed, womanly stage presence, as well as a rounder, fuller sound from founding members Mike Hogan (bass), his brother Noel Hogan (guitar), and drummer Fergal Lawler.
Strutting at various times in a flowing robe, leather mini-skirt, or white pants, the diminutive O'Riordan leads the Cranberries through an overview of their Celtic-tinged, alternately jangly or thrashing repertoire. As always, they're at their best when they reach beyond O'Riordan's tendencies toward lyrical self-congratulation. When they don't, a bit of monotony fogs up the proceedings. When they do, however, which is frequently in Beneath the Skin, the Cranberries demonstrate exquisite pop craftsmanship ("Just My Imagination," not to be confused with the Temptations' classic) and ferocity of spirit ("Animal Instinct"). In any case, the passionate Parisian audience at this show amplifies the band's thorny glories while, paradoxically, easing them into a comfortable encounter with stardom. All in all, this is a must for Cranberries fans and a multifaceted introduction to the group for everyone else. --Tom Keogh

Fantastic enterntainment.......2006-04-24
I'm fairly new to the Cranberries, but "The Cranberries - Beneath the Skin - Live in Paris" is an eye-opener to what I've been missing. Dolores O'Riordan performs before a massive live audience in Paris, and she leads her band members on a performance that makes the DVD viewer both feel like they are there, and also wish that they actually were there. Dolores exhibits casual confidence, musical talent, engaging charm, and outright sexiness in this performance before a very appreciative audience in Paris, France in late 1999. Dolores' male band members can be seen showing signs of admiration for their band leader. And ladies - there is something here for you, too. During "Zombie", drummer Fergal Lawler completely shucks his shirt to complement some lively bareback drumming.

If you love music, and the way it was originally "felt", I would never suggest this DVD. I am a Cranaberries fan, and to see them commercialize their music like this video has is very disappointing. I bought "the cranberries live", and this video at the same time. "The cranberries live", is awesome, and the music is displayed as it was originally written. This video shows the extent that popularity has on a bands originallity. I didn't even watch the video to the end.
Terrific concert DVD.......2005-08-12
If you LOVE the Cranberries, this is the concert DVD for you. All your favorite songs, plus extras like videos and a documentary.

Never been all that much of a Cranberries fan,but I had the chance to check out this DVD,so I thought...what the heck!'Beneath...' features an 80-minute live concert that was taped at the Omnisport in Paris,France on December 9,1999.Great,crisp and clear-as-a-bell picture and sound quality.A REAL treat for all true fans. After viewing the live segment,I can now see why this band has such a huge fan base.Tunes I remember liking the best were "Promises","Salvation","Pretty When You're Gone",their memorable "Zombie" and "Dying In The Sun".Wasn't that familiar with most of the other songs they played. Also dug the extras the DVD provides, like their unplugged video of "Yesterday's Gone",photo gallery, etc.Very nice.A should-have,and a must-have for all Cranberries fans.
Perfect!.......2004-07-04
