Not a Dolby Digital 5.1 DVD.......2005-08-21

This is perhaps one of the best Mehteny DVDs, even with a mixed band. However, BEWARE, this is not a DD 5.1 DVD, at least from Caiman. They did nothing to resolve the issue and could not have shown any less interest in resolving the issue. It starts out with a nice 5.1 intro and then defaults to Dolby Pro-Logic. I have a high-end system (B&K pre, Anthem amps, Cambridge Audio DVD). Do not get this product from Caiman!! I WILL be sending it back and trying again for the real thing. Poorest customer care I have ever received. What a shame........

The BEST Pat Metheny DVD!.......2005-01-07

It's a shame that this DVD has been generally unavailable for so long AND is so expensive BUT it is absolutely worth it!! Pat has done a great job assembling this line-up (in the absence of Lyle Mays, Gil Goldstein & Jim Beard share the keyboard duties to produce the necessary string & etc effects from the CD) & has also weeded out some of the "less dynamic" tracks from the CD while adding a sublime version of Jobim's "How Insensitive" which, I think, is even better than the version on the Speaking of Now DVD. That said, "Rain River" was a revelation for me as I have never cared much for the studio version.
THE standout highlights, however, are "Antonia" (with Gil Goldstein playing a very flash-looking Piano Accordion BEAUTIFULLY) & the cathartic "The Truth Will Always Be" (unless you can't stand the guitar synthesiser you MUST turn this one up LOUD!!). "Tell Her You Saw Me" is a simply drop-dead gorgeous closer as well, helping calm the adrenalin rush of TTWAB.
Finally, one can't finish without noting that this DVD offers a beautiful & fitting tribute to the late Mark Ledford; he whistles, he sings high, he sings low & he plays (played) a multitude of instruments with exquisite taste.
Of the 50 or so music DVD's in my collection, this is the one I most often come back to. As another reviewer stated "a sublime performance of a great collection of tunes performed by a stellar group of players"

No waste.......2006-12-13

Eventhough the price is a bit high, It's worth it. I saw this tour and there capture it perfectly. As an sound engineer, the surround is realy good for today's standards and specially considering it was done almost 15 years ago. You could missed Lyle Mays but it was well covered by Gil Goldstein and Jim Beard and consider this an exotic PMG performing his best album.

This was a wonderful experience. I've thought that this album was the apex of Pat Metheny's career for many reasons, and "Finding and Believing" is my favorite Metheny song of all.

So what's not to like?

1. No orchestra. They use an ARP or something similar to back up the ensemble, and it is not the same...
2. No dts. It is mixed for Dolby Pro Logic, which is a dirty, dirty shame.
3. No Lyle Mays. The keyboarding is masterful but without Lyle Mays, it just ain't the same.

But, who cares? It's a once-in-a-lifetime combination of exultation, sadness, and depth. I wonder about the stage wisdom of ending with a song like "Tell Her You Saw Me," though. It's not exactly a socko finish for a Brunswick, New Jersey audience...

Simply Superb.......2004-03-03

I haven't seen all the other Metheny DVDs so I can't compare this one to any of them. I do own More Travels on VHS, which is not strictly speaking a live concert, as there was no audience present for that live performance. There are distracting "arsty" moments on that video, plus they cut to interviews and other stuff that after a while take away from the video.

There are no distractions on this presentation, just an hour and a half of great music. While this DVD is not the Pat Metheny Group, it IS live in front of an enthusiastic audience, and there was reason for their jubilation. This is a sublime performance of a great collection of tunes performed by a stellar group of players. The lineup includes the late 80's PMG sans Lyle Mays. In his place are two of my favorite keyboard players, Jim Beard and Gil Golstein. Their's is a tough job, as they had to play all the orchestral and supporting parts from a very dense studio album. They perform their tasks admirably, and together with Mark lederer and David Blamires, who also have their hands full supplying all the brass parts and adding their considerable vocal and percussion talents to the many layered textures, the sound is nearly as full and detailed as the original studio recording. Rounding out the sound is an added guitarist and Armando Marcal supplying beautiful colors and percussion. What a great show! And until now I thought I'd have to rely on my memory of that ecstatic, singular night! The sound is great, the mix nearly letter perfect. The picture is grainy and not as sharp as one would hope for a DVD, but the content is so good, this can easily be overlooked. This is a straightforward no nonsense concert video, just nine great musicians reverently and joyfully laying down some of Pat's most heartful and honest music from the happy/sad but always beautiful Secret Story CD. Highly recommended.

NOTE: It is interesting to note that Pat Metheny put the kabosh on the american release of this DVD, the reason being, he apprarently felt that the performance here was not up to his high standards. While that may be true, (there are a few minor clams here and there,) the overall performance is still excellent, if not letter perfect. This is after all, the only documentation of this historic tour and as such, the imperfections can easily be overlooked. Most people won't even notices them. You can find copies of this DVD on Ebay. It is a treasure not to be missed,especially to fans of the CD.

Secret Story DVD.......2004-01-20

This is my favourite Pat Methany DVD, Brilliant, if you like the secet story CD. You'll love this. Actually watching songs like Finding & Believing, Rain River and The Truth Will Always Be come to life is fantastic. A word of warning though, Pat is out of uniform.... He's not wearing his striped top.... Have to live with it I suppose.

Being an avid Pat Metheny fan, I own all the DVD's, CD's, MC'c and LP's available from this fantastic guitarist/composer.
Now I can't say that this particular DVD portrays the best of Pat, but the selection of songs on this particular DVD is a very nice example of what he can do. Initially I thought this DVD too expensive, but let me tell you, it is well worth it!
Just the way he plays the song "How Insensitive" would be worth the price.From a artistic point of view, this DVD is as straightforward as can be, but hey....
