2 out of 5 stars A dream come true... for Yngwie.......2007-07-03

I will admit from the get-go that I had very high expectations for this after owning and greatly appreciating the Concerto Suite album.

The main reasons I've given this one of the worst ratings ever is because of the lighting and the over emphasis on Yngwie's guitar.

The DVD has an excellent intro with just the orchestra. Very good talent there! But, once Yngwie comes out in that silly outfit of his the feeling of prestige is lost. The lighting and color of the venue has the impact of fluorescent lights in an office. Also the editing of the camera angles was not as carefully done as it deserved. Much of my disappointment is because of that fact. Also, if you buy this you may find that Yngwie's guitar is way too prominent. That's fine for his rock group shows, but there's a time and a place! The contrast is just too great! It screams over the orchestra and for that I find the performances more irritating than impressive.

I feel really bad doing this. Know that I would give the Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar CD a five star rating on the spot, but the DVD version just has too many flaws. (I ended up tossing it and keeping the case.)

I know this was a big deal for Yngwie and that he was thrilled to make this happen, but I suppose I'm just too picky. Go out and buy the CD if you don't have it, but see if you can rent or somehow preview this DVD before you spend the money.

3 out of 5 stars Yngwie is Yngwie....if you know what I mean.......2007-06-18

It's a good enough DVD and if you're wanting to see if an electric guitar concerto is actually a decent idea, it's worth the money. That said, though, Yngwie's classic over-the-top desire to cram goo-gobs of notes into any and all passages, whether or not they fit, gets a bit annoying at times. When he slows down and actually feels the passion of a piece, he's a genius, and his arrangements for the symphony orchestra playing behind him are nice and tasty. But even for an old Yngwie fan, it's a little too much sometimes.

3 out of 5 stars guitar fiend.......2007-06-01

Without some long, drawn out, pretentious review - those that know YM's work will not be disappointed in this disc. For those that are just discovering it, they'll wonder why they missed him. The audio and video quality of the disc is less then pristine but that may have been the pressing I recieved.

5 out of 5 stars bravo!.......2007-03-09

hey, it's Yngwie, already! He's supposed to sound like that. I appreciate him for what he does, and he does it very well. 'nuff said.

5 out of 5 stars Yngwie at his absolute best.......2007-03-08

You will never see Yngwie any better then this !!
Excellent image and sound quality as well.

If musical notes were gold nuggets, then King Midas would look like a pauper next to Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Yngwie Malmsteen. Performing both individually and together in this 112-minute concert, the three hard rock guitarists prove their virtuosity beyond a doubt; despite the obvious antecedents, including Jimi Hendrix (they play both "Little Wing" and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" during the "G3 Jam" session that comes at the end) and Eddie Van Halen, all three play with the kind of swiftness, precision, and overall technical proficiency that very few others can match. Yet the non-stop, high-volume speed riffing (Malmsteen is the most egregious when it comes to playing notes for notes' sake, but all three are culpable) eventually proves to be a whole lot of sound and fury, signifying almost nothing. There's little to speak of in terms of songs or melodies (and no vocals, other than during the jam section), and, notwithstanding Malmsteen's pseudo-classical bent, not much to distinguish the three, either. The chops are awesome, dude--but in the end, even die-hards could be forgiven for thinking, "Thanks, fellas, that was really, really impressive. But do you think you could play some music now?" --Sam Graham

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Speed Kills? Not at this concert!.......2007-06-24

I grew up on early British Blues, and have always loved to see the most innovative and skilled guitarists. Though concert wary, I have nonetheless been able to see Jeff Beck, Robben Ford, SRV, Steve Morse, Albert King, B.B. King, Eddie Van Halen, Carlos Santana, Les Claypool (OK, he's a bass player), John Petrucci, and many other masters of the guitar. I went to this concert at the Fillmore in Denver, and it was a real epiphany.

While there's a critic in every crowd, here's the bottom line: this was the runner-up for the most talent I have seen play TOGETHER at one event. Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jeff Beck (with Terry Bozzio on drums) takes first from 1989. The G3 fellows were flawless. Truly spectacular. Comparisons of Satriani, Vai, and Malmsteen are difficult because they each are brilliant in different and diverse ways, and really what's the point? I hadn't kept up on Yngwie for more than a decade, so I wasn't sure what to expect. But he was just phenomenal. And he really added a different voicing to the jams at the end of the concert. I don't even like Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World", but these three made it work.

So, is the DVD a good representation of the live concert? Absolutely. Not one song was edited out (though Vai's playing with his tongue during the jam was not shown). Malmsteen's set was put in a different order ("Far Beyond the Sun" was not his finale, look at the start of "Adagio" to see him inspecting his cut finger from ripping off the strings during the guitar smashing which happened earlier in the concert). "Adagio" was his encore.

Now I have to check the box that says "I am over the age of 13". Yes, by 44 years. My college students have me listening to DragonForce and other modern "guitar gods". Hmmmm? Speed kills? Yes! Except in the hands of the most experienced drivers. Take a ride with Satriani, Vai, and Malmsteen and get a new perspective.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING SHOW.......2007-05-25

If you are looking at this DVD, you probably already know who these guys are. It starts off good with Satriani doing his thing, but Vai and Malmsteen steal the show. The jam at the end with all three is just a bonus. A must have.

5 out of 5 stars Remember these are three distinct styles.......2007-05-13

I have read a lot of bashing on Yngwie here and of course everyone is entitled to their opinion. I find it funny that some self professed guitarists review this G3 album and talk about his redundancy and ho hum style of play. Yngwie is Yngwie and he is worthy of playing with Satriani and Vai or they wouldn't have asked him to play with them. For the guitarists that review this and slam Yngwie, when are we going to see your name next to Satriani and Vai.

With that being said, yes Yngwie is somewhat of a throwback but I think it really adds to the diversity of this show. I am very happy I bought this and would recommend to anyone. Some good stage antics but definitely some great playing. I am now going to get the other two DVD's with great anticipation. I have Petrucci on Jazz CD's and have not heard Eric Johnson.....at least I don't think I have.

I would really love to see some other guitarists in the lineup in the future..Robert Fripp, Ritchie Blackmore (if he still plays), Stanley Clarke on bass (I don't know if he is still around) and possibly Al Dimeola if he still plays. If none of these guys are available then there are definitely many many talented players I would like to see interract with Vai and Satriani.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet!.......2007-05-06

Joe and Steve are brilliant, as usual. They get such great tone live, which is hard, but great showmanship too! Yngwie seems to like to kick stuff but has amazing dexterity and range of style.

4 out of 5 stars funny stuff.......2007-04-04

I watched the Petrucci show and then this one back to back and it's pretty interesting how the "guest" really changes the dynamic. In Tokyo, Vai was the most outlandish and Petrucci was virtuosic but kinda boring stage-presence-wise. Satch was Satch. On this one Yngwie is doing all the crazy acrobatics and so Vai kinda lays back, maybe it would'va been too dangerous for 2 guitars to be swinging around all over the place. On the first jam I also think Vai was kinda intimidated by Yngvie's furious shredding and took a few minutes to get warmed up. Joe pretty much ignored Yngwie and just did his own thing, which was incredibly musical.

(Spoiler)

at the end credits -Vai to Satch - "your voodoo solo was incredible!"
Yngwie: "I didn't even hear it..."
uh huh

(end spoiler)

Anyways this is the most entertaining on a "shred-Liberace" level of the 2 dvds. I recommending fast forwarding otherwise it gets to be a little monotonous. I haven't seen the Eric Johnson one yet, out of all 5 guitarists he's my favorite so that'll be a separate review...

Now if only Allan Holdsworth would be on a G3 show, and instead of "Foxy Lady" being the jam song, they all played on "Ruhkukah"...
(Vai would probably drop all the antics and play like his life depended on it, Satch would play blues licks and excerpts from Mystical Potato and Allan would wince because he was off by a 32nd note in a quintuplet figure...)

3 out of 5 stars Well, if there's no other way to get it..........2007-04-10

The "LIVE AT LENINGRAD" performance was originally released as a 90-minute performance and in this DVD it was cut to 50 minutes. This is inexcusable. (probably they cut the songs that would repeat after appearing in the Japanese show - but, hey, these are separeted performances!!)

Anyway, this is sheer nostalgy. First, in the 1985 Japanese show, we have Jeff Scott Soto singing at the top of his lungs. Man, this guy can sing! At the Lenignrad show, we have Joe lynn Turner also at the top and Yngwie playing like never.

Well, if this the cheap and dishonest way the record company decided to release the Leningrad concert, one must buy it...

4 out of 5 stars disapointing.......2007-03-05

well it is a very good concerts but the probleme id that live in leningrad is during 50 MN and i had a laserdisc who was during 90MN
so it miss many songs and very good songs
and for live in japan it is the same it miss a lot of songs so we don t know why so i enjoy watching the dvd but??? i would like to see it all

1 out of 5 stars Bad video footage.......2007-02-03

I bought this dvd because I had Trial by fire but lost it.This dvd has trial by fire but all the songs I like are missing like far beond the sun and black star. They are on live in Japan which is included but the way it was filmed really sucked. It made me sea sick just trying to watch it.The bad camera work ruined this dvd, dont order this, youll be sorry you did,

5 out of 5 stars Blistering performances by the Master!.......2007-02-01

As soon as I saw that this DVD was going to be released soon, it immediately made it to my 'must have' list! And now I finally have it in my hands and have watched it three times already.

The first thing that struck me was the amazing front cover artwork. I could sit down and watch the cover for hours. The menu artwork is inspired by the front cover artwork. Everytime you click on a menu item, the artwork animates, disappears and another artwork appears as the background to the submenu. The artwork on this DVD is simply brilliant and tastefully done.

The DVD itself is made of two of Malmsteen's most flamboyant live recorded concerts: Live in Japan 85 and Live In Leningrad 89. The first thing that amazes me is the audio visual quality. The remastered sound has lost none of it's rawness. I mean when you watch Japan 85, you would have thought that you were attending this concert! There are a few cheesy animation that was done at the time (which was probably cool then) otherwise the image quality is very clear. The band puts on an amazing display of musicianship with Jeff Scott Soto on vocals, Marcel Jacob on drums, the Anderson brothers on drums and keyboards and the Master himself on guitars.

On Live In Leningrad, you can tell that Malmsteen has now become more famous than when Japan 85 was recorded. Compared to Japan 85, in Leningrad, Malmsteen has got a huge stage to perform on and has Joe Lynn Turner singing his songs! There is a very elaborate and visual lightshow as well as the fireworks and smoke machine for additional effect. Having a big stage gives the band more space to express themselves and the execution is flawless as usual. The restored image and sound quality has to be heard and seen to be believed. Whoever has reworked those footage has done an excellent job.

The only downside to both concerts for me is when Malmsteen starts going crazy when he does his 10minute solo. The solo itself is breathtaking until at around 6 minutes into the solo when he starts doing all sorts or weird noises with his guitar that probably only makes sense to him! But he is a genius and genuises are usually crazy! So we'll forgive him for that!

This DVD is absolutely worth getting on the strength of those two live performances. However, the bonus material makes it even more interesting to acquire. First off their are four videos of: Bedroom Eyes (that's my favourite video of the lot), Heaven Tonight, I'll See The Light and Save Our Love. Then there are two Malmsteen masterclasses where you can 'see' exactly which notes he is playing. So that is a bonus that guitar players will welcome but most non musicians will find totally useless. But still the non-musicians will still delight in watching the two videos. And finally there is a 30 minute interview with Malmsteen which was recorded in 2006 where he answers a lot of interesting questions and gives you an insight into his amazing career from the beginning to now.

I would personally recommend buying this DVD from one of the masters of the electric guitar because he turns out to be highly entertaining and will surely teach you a thing or two!

Now how about a remastered issue of Live At Budokan with Mike Vescera on vocals. That was a nuclear performance!

5 out of 5 stars Yngwie at the height of his career.......2006-12-25

This DVD is a reissue of two concerts, one of which I had previously on a VCR tape. The shows are "Live in Japan 89" and "Trial by Fire:Live in Leningrad 89". The color is great so they must have remastered it and it has a 2006 interview which is interesting along with three extra videos that were used for promos. (Bedroom Eyes, Heaven Tonight, Save Our Love) The guitar players will like the masterclass on a couple of songs. (You Don't remember, I'll never forget and I'll See the Light Tonight) The concert film is shown with the tab that Yngwie plays during the song. A lot of people hate Yngwie, but it ain't braggin if you can do it.

This item changes availability often. Sometimes it show up for $23 US and sometimes for significantly more. Wait for it to show up at the lower price. It's a single disk DVD, no inserts or extra stuff inside but the shows are well worth the price.

4 out of 5 stars Baffled by these reviews.......2006-11-14

By the standards of most music DVDs made 2000 and before, this one's audio wasn't that bad at all. & picking on his weight? Odd that it would be such an issue for some, esp. of the male persuasion. If you like Yngwie for his guitar playing and you don't expect the flawless 5.1 surround mixes of the last two years, this DVD is what an Yngwie fan is looking for.

1 out of 5 stars Tasteless trash.......2006-09-07

Yngwie Malnsteen can play blistering arpeggios, but this DVD could at some time in the future, be held up as a shining example of 20th Century rock'n'roll extravagance, egotism and tastlesness.
First, there's the cheap and very nasty audio mix - the bass and keybords are almost non-existent, and Malmsteen's ego ensured that the very irritating braying from the audience is a constant feature of the mix. And then there's Yngwie himself; sweating and posturing in a very tight leather outfit, replete with open shirt and gold crucifix.
The horror. The horror....

4 out of 5 stars How long before amazing gets boring.......2005-08-18

malmsteen is physically an amazing player, and to watch him... he makes my jaw drop to the floor, but there's only some many times, you can sit and watch him play. even in the length of this dvd i was wondering...... had he played this song already. alot of people are complaining about the sound quality, it aint amazing, but i could live with it. what i love about malmsteen is when he goes into a slow classical piece, like on the G3 dvd, thats the dvd that inspired to buy this one, if i'd seen this before i bought it, i probably wouldnt have bought it.

5 out of 5 stars a little tid bit for a reviewer called MARTIN!!!!!.......2005-08-14

Hey dude....you have it ALL WRONG!!! The scalloped frets DO make it easier to finger the frets. I know because I have a one...idiot!!
Anyway, I have an instructional video of the guitar wizard himself saying that it DOES make it easier to finger the strings!!!
Sounds like YOU"RE the one who doesn't know what he's talking about...JUST SHUT UP ALREADY....DUMB A$$!!! LOL

3 out of 5 stars Yngfair.......2005-04-30

There's no question that Yngwie is a phenominal guitarist but if you're going to release a DVD then there are 3 things he might want to reconsider. 1) Hire a personal chef. There's no excuse for a guy of his wealth to come out looking like Porky the Pig on guitar. I love Yngwie but it was hard to watch this video beacause of his weight. Rock & Roll has a definite image factor to it. If I was just listening to his CDs then fine, go ahead and suck down the ice cream and pizza but if you're a shredder selling me a video, dressed in leather, LOSE SOME WEIGHT!!
2) Hire a decent sound man. Maybe you might want to talk to Steve Harris in Iron Maiden. Everything that guy does is first class.
3) Consider working with a lyricist. You're a great guitarist, great song writer (musically) but your words could use a LOT of work. After all that - did I enjoy this DVD? Yes, I did but he could do a LOT better, I just KNOW he could. PLEASE talk to Steve Harris....

5 out of 5 stars Malmsteen done it again!!.......2007-05-14

Anyone who loves classical music will love this! The quality of this DVD is outstanding, giving good shots of Yngwie and the rest of the concert. Can't wait for no 2 to be released - Yngwie you've done it again - the best!

5 out of 5 stars A SHINING EXAMPLE OF MUSICAL PROWESS!!!!.......2005-07-15

Those of you out there who enjoy great guitar playing should definitely check this out! This is definitely not yngwie's typical stage performance though. He really focuses his strengths and passions for the instrument on this dvd. I enjoyed this dvd immensely, and felt it was worth about $30 dollars. Shop around and you may get it for that price. I suggest to all of you out there who want a little less "hair metal yngwie" and more skilled/less gaudy material to check this out. This dvd is for the U.S. formats but for some reason the few interview segments seem to be in either japanese or korean. THE REST IS GOOD THOUGH!! I should also add that the editing is not nearly as painful as some of his other dvd releases. Sound quality seems adequate as well..

5 out of 5 stars A True Concerto for Electric Guitar.......2004-01-09

As he himself explains it on the DVD, this is a concerto in the classical sense. It is not an attempt to marry rock with orchestra as in Deep Purple, Metallica and scores of other acts. Unlike these other acts, Malmsteen takes on the role of a soloist in the orchestra, just like a violinist or pianist does. One preceding exception might be Steve Vai's performance with a symphony orchestra (which I did not see) going back to 1996.

What strikes me most is his intense use of the first three fingers. His fourth finger comes into play when called for. But not all four fingers hover over the fretboard all of the time. His reach is phenomenal, especially playing and stretching between the first fret and the fifth fret! Apart from the requisite talent and hard work, those with shortish fingers need not even try.

His picking technique incorporates all that is minimalist. Except for a few gestures of showmanship, there is no unnecessary movement (and hence time wasted). There are probably very few guitarists alive today who can play this concerto effortlessly. Just like several famous violin concertos written in the last two centuries that when premiered, they were beyond the capability of most violinists of the time.

i bought this dvd . i liked all malmsteens albums so i couldnt ignore this dvd.
i cant tell you anything negetive word about his music and definitely i cant tell you negetive word about " concerto suite for electric guitar and orchestra in e flat minor live concert with the new japan philharmonic or the czech orchestra played on his cd.
i bought also his albums ( his two versions of them - the rock version and the classical vesion - both the same music ( The first 6 tracks (special the first "icarus dream fanfare" and the 10th ("vivace") are awsome and the next were so so) ; but this live performance with the japan philharmonic added great tracks as " blitzkrieg , far beyond the sun trilogy suits op.5 the first movement , brother , evil eye ( special feature and the openning (with the orchestra only )- - " black star oventure" . Malmsteen composed classical piece and performed by full orchestra .good dvd but not for all malmsteens fans out there. it took me time until i accepted this classical project. the great thing - all music composed by yngwie , awesome performance but sometimes malmsteens carries us to classical direction with exaggeration way ( like " presto vivace" and the sound is only "pcm stereo" so i gave this dvd 4.5 stars only .
i thank malmsteen for his 3 dvds i have ( including this) and i hope that he will give us more dvds like this or like his 1998 live concert or his live performance dvd at budokan.i have all malmsteens cd's and i appreciate his music . interesting and appreciated !

5 out of 5 stars YNGWIE IS SIMPLY AMAZING WITH FULL ORCHESTRA.......2003-11-15

Yngwie Malmsteen plays like a Wild Beast possessed of Satan himself on Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra in E Flat Minor LIVE with the New Japan Philharmonic!! I cannot remember having witnessed such emotional and technical precision as I did on this DVD! Watching it, you are struck with images of seeing the unbelievable. Is this a man like myself, or a god? And if a man, how could he play so well? Surely he must've sold his soul to the Devil in order to play in this advanced manner. I've never seen such a mind boggling display of mastery over one's instrument. Nicolo Paginni himself would have a hard time keeping up with Yngwie this time around. Beginning with he Black Star Overture and then going through the entire Concerto score by memory including several bonus songs, with note-for-note perfection is such a joy to hear. It sounds so full and alive; soulful. Technically, the tone on his vintage Stratocaster is full and warm with plenty of sustain. The volume of his guitar blends in great with the orchestra and seems to get louder as the concert gets going. The orchestra is very good; they compliment Yngwie extremely well and never falter. This is so good that I wouldn't be surprised if it is shown on PBS one of these days. The only thing I didn't like was the tone of his acoustic guitar which he used on a couple of the songs. It has nylon strings and in my humble opinion, couldn't handle the speed and attack of Yngwie's playing. The audience could care less as it roars its approval after every song. You won't be disappointed when you see him playing the chops, sweeps and runs that have made him famous. The camera angles are good with a great many closeups of Yngwie's fingers on the fretboard. You won't miss a thing. The orchestra is shown periodically as is the audience which added a nice touch. All told there are eighteen songs which includes bonus material and lengthy interviews of Yngwie, including his entire chronological history. Yngwie, this is your Magnum Opus as far as I'm concerned. You have done what every other rock act has attempted to do since Deep Purple in 1969, combine rock with classical. You have discovered the Philosophers Stone; the Holy Grail. With alchemy at your fingertips you have turned everything you touch into gold and silver. If this were the 1600's you'd probably be stoned for being so damn good. I salute you Yngwie Malmsteen.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the price?.......2005-12-03

I just received this dvd yesterday and have watched twice since then. It was the only Yngwie dvd I needed to complete my collection and is now my favorite of Yngwie's "rock" genre performances. I also HIGHLY recommend The Concerto for electric guitar in E flat taped with the new japan philharmonic which is also a superb performance. Yngwie is no doubt having a good night on the Budakan performance. The dvd is loaded too, lots of songs, semi decent audio, guitar solos, drum solo, and a nice keyboard solo. Also on the dvd are video interviews with the "Yng" and footage of him making his way thru the venue from the vehicle that dropped him off before the show with his ex-wife Amberdawn. The band line up (one of my favorites and one of the best and most powerful, in my opinion) was Yngwie on the guitar (of course) Michael Vescera-lead vocals,Matts Olausson-all keyboards, and Mike Terrana-drums. Im not sure who is playing bass on this tour. In my opinion, the price is a little steep on this dvd but worth it to a die-hard fan.
