Kiss: The Second Coming is a band-sanctioned hagiography focusing on the profit-minded 1996 tour that found the '70s heavy-metal icons back in full-bore makeup and costumes for a time-trip back to their Alive II heyday. At 122 minutes, Second Coming is an hour too long for all but die-hard devotees, and peaks with its opening recap of the band's early fire-breathing years. After that, it's a quick run-through of good-days-gone-bad clichés before the long haul of backstage shots and gee-it's-great-to-be-back-on-the-playground testimonials takes over. Little insight is present, though there is a bit of comic myth-mocking during a sequence demonstrating the inflation of the stage show's gargantuan inflatable figures of Gene, Paul, Peter, and Ace. Three tour performances, including music videos for "Detroit Rock City" and "Shout It Out Loud," alleviate the boredom. --Rickey Wright
Description
For over a quarter century, Kiss has shaped the face of popular music and rock culture. The "Kiss Alive Worldwide" tour saw the rebirth of rock's most incredible band. Who are these masked men and where did they come from? What did it take to reclaim their title as "The Hottest Band in the World?" After 18 years apart, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley, Peter Criss and Gene Simmons overcame their past differences, finally reuniting the powerhouse original Kiss lineup that wrote rock and roll legend. This is Kiss and this is their story.

5 out of 5 stars So glad they regrouped.......2006-09-20

It's a great DVD which tracks the regrouping of one of the best bands ever. I have to admit I never called Kiss my "favourite band", back then I was more of a Led Zeppelin person - it all boils down to who you're exposed to I guess.

I remember a few decades ago there was a Kerrang magazine issue entitled "Kiss vs Led Zeppelin" or vice versa. I wonder in hindsight what a worldwide vote would reveal.

It's a shame that there were some Christians who wanted to stop one of the Kiss shows that featured on the DVD... but it's worth remembering that not only Christians can be bigots. If we weren't prepared to stick up for our beliefs we wouldn't hold them; just ask Gene Simmons his opinion of a certain other large world religion.

This DVD is well worth the time & money - 5 stars.

1 out of 5 stars and 3rd, and 4th....Ho Hum.......2006-06-06

Talk about self important.
GIVE US SOMETHING NEW OR GET LOST!!!

5 out of 5 stars It started out great it got a little boring at times, but by the end of the disc, I loved the whole thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-03-10

Ok, I will start out by saying it lacks concert footage, actually if your looking for real concert footage its not here at all, they dont play a single song in concert on this disc, you see them on stage alot doing shows, but there is not one part in the whole disc that has a complete song in concert except for the bonus features. most of the concert footage is dubbed over by the band talking about what was going on.
Ok now that we have got that out of the way lets start the disc.
It starts out like a VH1 behind the music documentary which is really cool and is my favorite part of the whole thing, it goes all the way through to the break up , while the band is explaining in their own words why they chose to break up. then we start the reunion stuff, the MTV unplugged session, the Grammys it even shows Kiss present the Grammys with the late great TUPAC Shakur(RIP) then it shows them rehearsing the music, and then they start doing the photo shoots which are absolutley hilliarious, paul has a bunch of naked women in his session which is very awesome becuase you see everything the bush and all I loved it. then it basically went through the whole tour every country, showing clips from the tour on and off stage, it has the jay leno skits from the tonight show, they celebrate everyones birthday except peters for some reason, the dialouge from the band and the dialouge from the footage really show you that at one point during kiss's return that they actually were happy to be back together, but we all know the tradgic ending that was to come. it finishes off the program by, showing the photo shoot from psycho circus,
the bonus feature are lacking and the shandi performance was very weak, there are three concert videos though,
1.Shout it out loud(opening night at tiger stadium)
2.shandi(not worth it to watch very boring)
3.Detroit Rock city( this is from the psycho circus tour but I dont know when or wear) good dvd if you want to see a very good short documentary on the band and then if you want to know every detail behind the scenes of the concert, it is very long and drawn out at times, but just being able to hear the whole story from kiss's perspective is worth the time. i watched it twice in one day so its very good or I'm very bored. haha ack to all the curly people out there, lets bring ace back to the kiss lineup and put tommy back to work on a full concert video like "RTN" but for psycho circus and the reunion and the farewell tour. rock on.

5 out of 5 stars A very detailed dvd of the reunion.......2006-01-22

The dvd was made in 1998 and was written and produced by now KISS spaceman Tommy thayer.A look at the 1996 KISS original lineup reunion. The dvd is 2 hours and 15 minutes wich is in some fans opinion too long but i think the longer the KISS dvd are the better it is because i always want more of a KISS dvd.

The second coming starts with a short look at the original band`s albums until love gun and then shows to Peter and Ace at the mtv unplugged wich leads to them coming back for the reunion 96-97 tour.It shows how the band needed practice to learn these old things again wich was not easy. They made press conferences for the tour and then went for a 2 year tour around the world;japan, usa, switzerland, france, sweede and other country around the world.

The reunion tour was one of the year`s most succesfull. There are cool backstage look at the band and funny stuff that happened .They also show KISS photo sesions and magazine covers. One of the best part is when KISS is backstage and Paul and Ace latter joined by Peter are dancing to the japanese version of `the macarena`song wich is like the funniest thing ever.Concert footages are there but you have to wait a while to see them. They shown gene`s birthday in japan, paul`s birthday and ace`s but not not peter`s.they also show people going backstage to meet them.

The dvd is good and long enough but they didnt included the psycho circus album stuffs i wish they did it would have been more representative of the reunion.I think they could have wait a bit and then they could have shown the psycho circus tour talk about the album, its photo sesions and more.

extras includes;shout it out loud, shandi and detroit rock city that probably are from the 96-97 tour.also there is a discography and kiss online information.

overall;a very good look at the reunion and tours along with extras and concert footage.worth your money very recomended dvd.To all fans.

5 out of 5 stars The best look at the KISS reunion.......2005-05-29

I will start off my review by saying that I am a die hard KISS fan,and I love things that bring back certain memories. In this instance,if you like KISS and you love things that bring back certain memories, then you will love this video/DVD. It takes a clear look at the beloved and awesome reunion tour KISS had in 1996 that saw original guitarist Ace Frehley and original drummer Peter Criss return to the group and also saw KISS putting both their makeup and costumes back on. You will see how the reunion happened,a biography of KISS(70's,a breeze through their 80's era,and briefly into the early 90's)and it talks about their reunion tour, and you get a brief behind the scenes look at the tour, some of which includes KISS rehearsing,Gene Simmons,Paul Stanley,Ace Frehley,Peter Criss on their tour bus, clips of their concerts, and I won't give away everything, but there are also some hot women to be found in this video!!! Now this video has EVERYTHING a KISS video(and especially videos that go into discussing reunions)needs-without question. It's really a shame that Ace Frehley and Peter Criss are no longer with the group-Ace left the group to work on his new solo album, and Peter was fired. It makes me sad to see musicians that great and that talented have to go through lineup changes,ESPECIALLY after they did a reunion tour.Anyway, like I said, this serves as a good memory for all KISS fans and it is a great behind the scenes look at their reunion tour, and it is also the best KISS video available,so just get it because it is awesome and KISS rocks!
