Handsome young men whack each other in the face with sticks and learn about life in this enjoyably silly hockey movie. Rob Lowe stars as Dean Youngblood, an American rookie who's been given a shot on a Canadian Junior League hockey team. Sure, he can skate, but can he take a punch? This coming-of-age story is about learning the beauty of vicious hockey fights. No, really. Containing both young-bucks-in-the-locker-room shots and plenty of hockey violence, Youngblood is a surprisingly entertaining cupcake of a movie--there's not much nourishment, but it sure tastes good. Watch for Patrick Swayze as the team's leader and Keanu Reeves in his first film role as the French-Canadian goalie. The DVD's most entertaining feature is the option of watching Youngblood dubbed into French--not to be missed. --Ali Davis

5 out of 5 stars Best Hockey Movie Ever...........2006-03-14

THIS IS PROBABLY THE BEST HOCKEY MOVIE I HAVE EVER SEEN. WITH AN AWESOME CAST AND APPROPRIATE REPRESENTATION OF THE TRUE CANADIAN GAME OF HOCKEY ITS EXCEPTIONAL. PLUS WHO CAN FORGET GOOD OLD HANNAH...THE BEST CHARACTER IN THE MOVIE BY FAR!

4 out of 5 stars Youngblood Review.......2006-02-26

No movie deserves 5 stars. :)
Youngblood is a good movie and well casted with professional acting.

Not much else to say.. ... I don't play hockey. lol But I'm sure the movie is an accurate representation of the hockey profession.

5 out of 5 stars What I think of the movie Youngblood.......2006-01-30

I saw this movie a loooonnnggg time ago, I thought it was awesome then, and seeing it took me back to my hockey years. Still awesome!

4 out of 5 stars Cynthia Gibb and hockey sticks.......2006-01-13

This is a decent movie about athletes whom you normally don't hear too much about: minor league hockey players. It centers around a young player (played by Rob Lowe) who is a wonderfully skilled finesse player, but he's also physically weak & unable to fight. In short, he is a Wayne Gretzky type of player. He just started in the minors & wants to go pro. Question: how will he deal with the goon side of hockey?

The movie is nostalgic as both Lowe and Patrick Swayze are so very young. Lowe is not much more than a teenager and this is one of Swayze's earliest films too. A young Keannu Reeves has a bit part as the goalie. Of course, with him nothing is really nostalgic: he couldn't act then & he can't act now.

The single biggest reason to give this DVD a viewing is Cynthia Gibb. She is absolutely gorgeous and really gives a fairly bland plot a sexy edge. This is also the only movie I know of where Cynthia takes her shirt off. That by itself was worth the price of the DVD!

If you like hockey movies, you may or may not like this one. Some of the chronology seemed to be pretty screwed up. For example: the coach is supposed to be giving his team a pep-talk in between periods, yet most of the players have their uniforms off. I've never played hockey myself, but am fairly certain that hockey players don't remove their uniforms in between periods. Also, the timeline between Lowe's character leaving the team & then coming back for the last game is not believable.

That said, this is a pretty good flick. It doesn't have the "tacked on" ending that I was fully expecting it to have. It also does showcase some of the less desirable features of the life of a minor league hockey player.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best made hockey movies ever.......2005-09-25

Youngblood accuretly shows the what hockey players go through around that teenage years while playing hockey. Some feel the movie is made to be more violent and all then hockey really is. Well first this movie was made in the 80's when ice hockey was alot more violent and you can go and tell the canadians that played then that they were not as physical as the movie depicts. Thia movie shows what teams do to players on the team and the hardships endured with college hockey. I've played hockey for 14 years and play for college now and you go through alot at times but its fun and the movie shows it. This is one of the best hockey movies ever made 2nd to slapshot. This is a must buy.

Set mainly in the Ireland the tourist board didn't tell you about, Into the West is the story of a "traveling" family who have given up their traditional life of roaming, and find themselves trying to make it in the gritty, violent projects of Dublin. Gabriel Byrne is excellent as Papa Reilly, a once-proud father and leader whose grief over his wife's death has turned him into a booze-sodden has-been. His two sons, Tito (Ruaidhri Conroy) and Ossie (Ciaran Fitzgerald), escape the projects on an apparently magical white horse, Tir Na Nog, which leads them back to the West. After being forced to steal the horse back from a wealthy and ruthless horse dealer, they are pursued across the increasingly beautiful landscape by virtually all the policemen in Ireland. The much-loved actor David Kelly (Waking Ned Devine) does a nice turn as the grandfather, and Ellen Barkin is a surprising but believable choice as an old "traveling" friend of Papa Reilly. For better or for worse--mainly better--this is not the story Disney would have told: redemptive and uplifting at the end, it's realistic to the point of ugliness on the way there, with a style of cinematography that the Magic Kingdom has never been able to stomach. The younger brother, Ossie, is supposed to be 7, but the story itself is perhaps more appropriate for somewhat older children. Entertainment Weekly's best family video for 1994. --Richard Farr

4 out of 5 stars A brief review of "Into the West".......2007-03-09

A nice story about the Irish Travelers based in part on Irish mythology. A good movie for children about age 10 to adult years. A lot of realism but also fantasy. Very enjoyable!

4 out of 5 stars Great Movie, But Rather Violent.......2007-01-10

I and my children loved this movie, however I'd like to caution parents who have smaller/sensitive/impressionable children. The movie has quite a few violent spots and the "authority figures" display a LOT of bigotry. The bigotry the police have towards the gypsies is prevalent throughout the entire movie and there are some spots where they brutalize the children's father as well as the horse. If your children are sensitive towards animal suffering or physical violence, you might want to view the movie by yourself first and then make sure you sit with them or skip those parts.

Overall, great movie -- just take care with the viewing.

4 out of 5 stars INTO THE WEST.......2007-01-09

This is a DVD I have purcharsed before and it was a hit with my son and grandson so I bought them there own copy. Service and shipment time very good.

5 out of 5 stars FABULOUS, MAGICAL, EXCITING MOVIE FOR ALL!.......2006-05-30

While searching for movies about horses, I came upon "INTO THE WEST" and after reading the reviews I bought it sight unseen...
As was said by many, this is a movie for ALL ages! A magical
white horse adopts two young boys of 8 and 12 (although the 8 year old looks more like 6) from a Dublin slum highrise. Bareback
they ride him to the west country of Ireland-leaving behind a sad
father who has left his traveller (Gypsy) life behind after his beloved wife died. He tries to 'settle' in a strange world, to him, and turns to drink. He hopes his two sons will be educated
and make something of themselves. Their Grandpa comes upon a beautiful white stallion who,at first, frightens the old man, but with his gypsy blood, he soon sees no harm in the horse and
reads his mind. He sets off for Dublin where he hasn't seen his
son-in-law nor his two grandsons-Tito & little Ossie for seven years. The horse follows his caravan and there begins the adventure!
Very sweet, very funny and scary in parts as they escape the VERY
wealthy man (who buys the horse from a crooked cop when the cop
sees how the horse, Tir na nOg, can jump like no horse can.)

He steals the horse and the boys steal him back. They are COWBOYS and the horse, with them on bareback, is leading them to the WILD WEST COUNTRY. Much goes on as they journey with their father after them (along with past traveller friends on horses through a cold winter so he can find his boys...)
You will love the way the boys and magical horse use all their wits to beat the police and greedy man who only sees money in the horse. You'll love the way they say "Hi Ho Silver AWAAAAY!"
and the horse rears up and takes off, always protecting them...

The end is amazing! It's then you find out the truth about the
horse... It's filled with excitment and the boys are so real!
Gabriel Byrne gives his all! You will see an Ireland like never before. Watch it more than once and you will fall in love with two darlin'little boys and a beautiful white stallion...

5 out of 5 stars Exellent.......2006-03-28

I think into the West is a fantastic family film for all ages.
Its a film that touches your heart and makes you laugh and cry and recommend this film as a classic and is a must have to add to a DVD collection.

This disturbing little film is even more unsettling when you think about the fact that it's based on an actual case. Troubled teen Samson murders his girlfriend Jamie for no particular reason, leaves her nude body by the river's edge, then brings his friends to see the corpse to prove he did it. They look at her, prod her, and talk about her, but no one seems to manage to feel anything. River's Edge is ultimately a study of kids who are so numbed by drugs, casual parenting, and the ever present threat of nuclear war that not even death can get a rise out of them. A young Keanu Reeves is surprisingly poised as Matt, the one character with a few shreds of empathy left. His quiet performance is powerful enough to hold the audience's interest even with Crispin Glover and Dennis Hopper both being as crazy as they can be. Glover steals much of the movie with his whacked-out performance as Layne, the group's leader. He undercuts his teen alpha-male power with a nervous giggle, and the spin he puts on much of his dialogue manages to be scary and funny at the same time--after hiding Jamie's body for Samson, he complains: "You'd think I'd at least rate a Michelob!" River's Edge is not necessarily a pleasant movie, but it is certainly a compelling one. --Ali Davis

Description

Based on the horrifying real-life murder of a young California girl, this "powerful portrait" (Newsweek) of deadly, disaffected teens stars Keanu Reeves (The Matrix), Crispin Glover (Charlie's Angels), Ione Skye Leitch (One Night Stand), Daniel Roebuck (Final Destination) and Dennis Hopper (Ed TV) in a tale that is "chilling to witness" (The New York Times). On the bank of a river lies the naked body of a brutally murdered young girl. Atthe nearby high school, Samson (Roebuck) brags to Matt (Reeves) and his friends about how he killedher. Drunk and stoned, the doubting teens trudge to the river and discover that he isn't lying. Andoddly, they decide to protect Samson behind a loyal wall of secrecy. Tormented with guilt, Matt questions their silence and suddenly finds himself in a troubling position: should he do what he thinksis right, or should he keep quiet and live with this demon for the rest of his life?

5 out of 5 stars A Negative Image of the Good.......2007-04-04

A quarter of the way through watching River's Edge, I was having trouble putting my finger on the right adjective for the film or the way it was making me feel. "Discomforting/uncomfortable", "appalling/appalled", "disturbing/disturbed" all floated around in my head but were insufficient to describe the sense I had of a horrific...absence of something. I mentioned this to the friend who had been responsible for our movie choice of the evening, and he summed it up: "it's a negative image of the good". That was it. Or to put it in the words that came to mind shortly thereafter, as two degenerate 12-year-olds shoot crabs in a bucket for mild entertainment, "All wrong." Everything--everything--was just all wrong.

At first, this might seem appropriate, even inevitable, given the film's subject matter. River's Edge begins with a dead body; Samson, a high school Neanderthal pothead played convincingly by Daniel Roebuck, has killed a female classmate of his--for essentially no reason--and then tells his friends about the crime. The rest of the film follows the aftermath as hyperbolic Layne (Crispin Glover) makes it his (and their) mission to protect Samson, while Matt (Keanu Reves) and Clarissa (Ione Skye Leitch) act indecisively on a vague discomfort with this course of action.

But few films dealing with murder intentionally omit any internal viewpoint of morality or justice in the way that River's Edge does, and this is what makes it compelling and thought-provoking as well as deeply unsettling. On the back of the box, Matt is described as "struggling with guilt" over the decision not to turn Samson in, and indeed he does go to the police fairly early in the plot. Ah-ha, you might say, here is our standard of judgment. But numerous clues throughout undermine Matt's claim to moral objectivity, any strong sense of rightness that could shed light on the other characters' nihilistic apathy and dissoluteness.

Indeed the lack of deep feeling is a running theme throughout the film. Several of the adults accuse the kids of the crime of apathy--and yet we and they are presented with no appropriate example of feeling, no appropriate object for it. Clarissa's high school teacher idealizes the accomplishments of his generation ("We stopped a war, man"), Feck--the kids' drug dealer--accuses Samson of not loving the girl he murdered...like Feck had loved the woman he had killed many years ago. Every passion in the film, it seems, is misdirected, whether toward the trivial (more than once is rage expressed over beer) or the perverse. Samson's explanation of his crime--that he did it to "show everyone who's boss", that it made him feel "alive"--is chilling enough to shake the beliefs of the most devout Nietzschean. All in all, an exceptional film and well worth watching.

5 out of 5 stars a great.......2007-04-03

i have searched for this movie for years. all of a sudden it hit me that amazon might have it and they did! although it is not a big production it has a great cast. keaneu reeves, dennis hopper and crispin glover all deliver in this. very disturbing flick but it is one of my alltime favorite movies. i will enjoy being able to watch this classic millons of times over.

5 out of 5 stars Ione: I Love You.......2006-10-13

Any movie with Ione Skye is obviously a masterpiece. Two years before John Cusack warned her not step on glass, Keanu Reeves does him one better: he offers to walk her home AND offers her his jacket. Let's see....stay in the car with a bugged out Crispin Glover or go to the park for some lovin' with Ione.... Keanu isn't as dumb as he looks.

This is one great movie. I just wish Keanu Reeves had stopped making movies after 1987. Can I get a witness?

Also, one hilarious moment. (I'm not sure if it's intentional or not). When Keanu's 12 year old brother points a loaded gun at him, we notice that he's wearing a Def Leppard Pyromania T-shirt. An assassin with a Def Leppard shirt? I think not. Son, get a Motorhead T-shirt and you'll be a little more gangsta.

5 out of 5 stars Great Performances. "Hey, Feck!".......2006-09-09

"River's Edge" is an early Keanu Reeve's movie that I've never heard an unkind word about. Critics love(d) it, audiences like it; Apparently, it's based on a true story and I hear a lot of people talk about how creepy and disturbing it is. One critic I recall called it "Deeply disturbing." Having just watched it for the first time, it's definitely disturbing that something like that would happen. But this movie doesn't really set itself up to be deeply disturbing; The music, the performances, nor the script really give off that emotion. Anyway, Samson (Daniel Roebuck) accidentally kills a girl named Jamie. He leaves her body right near the river's edge and tells all his friends about it. His friends, of course, are skeptical...But Samson is happy to prove it to anybody who's interested and pretty soon, almost all of his friends have seen it. All the kids are in a marijuana/alcohol induced haze, so it doesn't really click with any of them what's happened except for Matt (Reeves) who eventually reports Samson. Meanwhile, Layne (Crispin Glover) is trying to get rid of the body from the river's edge in an effort to help Samson. There's also a sub-plot involving Matt's brother Tim (Joshua Miller) looking for a gun with which to exact revenge on Matt for beating him up. The movie also co-stars a beautiful girl named Ione Skye Leitch, the love interest of Matt and Dennis Hopper playing the psychotic Feck. Hopper is perfectly cast, he plays the quirky villains better than a lot of people and as the deranged Feck (who sells all the neighborhood kids weed and has himself killed a girl in the past). The movie is a fantastic movie, both as entertainment and as a character(s) study; The film definitely has it's flaws though, like bad dialogue and some overacting (most notably by Glover and Reeves, who hadn't hit it big and were trying to hard to make their mark). One big thing that makes this film good is that Samson isn't some sinister high school murder. Merely, a normal kid with a slightly drug-induced psychotic streak. That adds to the realism a bit.

1 out of 5 stars Worthless dreck.......2006-03-24

One of the worst films I have ever seen. First off, Crispin Glover has to be the most annoying actor ever to walk the face of the earth. (Is it me or is his voice like nails on a chalkboard?) Then you throw the second worst in there--Keanu Reeves. There are better films about Gen X'ers than this worthless dreck.

If you are planning to buy this because it may look as if Kiefer is a main star then DONT. I was extreemly disapointed to find that he was only on this for less than ten minutes total. Billy Zane was in it more.

Apart from that I felt like I should smack myself over the head with the remote control every five minutes just to keep myself sane. It was very boring.

I have seen this movie about 10 times. I remember when it originally aired on television and I loved it.Keanu was very young and a little chunky and Kiefer was sorta sexy. I actually have this movie on vhs from when I taped it off the television. This is not a fantastic masterpeice of film; however, if you are a die hard Keanu Reeves fan, you will like it. When I saw it on dvd,I immediately placed it on my wish list.

2 out of 5 stars Keanu as A Vigilante.......2003-08-16

Thankfully, I got this DVD pretty cheap, cos I wouldn't have liked to buy it at full price. I got it as one of four - along with `Along For The Ride', `Across The Tracks' and `Deadfall'. I never knew Brotherhood of Justice was a TV `movie' until the credits started - you know how a TV movie always has those horrible credits? No wonder I couldn't find anything about it in cinema stuff.

It's your basic storyline: a few guys think they can rid their school of all the lowlifes and drug dealers and what not. They think they're the police. They take it upon themselves to do this, and it all goes horribly wrong.

Keanu Reeves is the main focus of the film, playing Derek. He has a girlfriend, and he seems to me, to be totally possessive of her. Having to see her during school, meet her for lunch, meet her after school, meet her after work . . . And then acts all jealous when she starts working with Kiefer Sutherland's character, who wouldn't be that much of a [danger], until Derek started acting [silly]. You could tell that relationship would go into meltdown pretty quickly.

Most of this film's actors were unknowns, though some of them went on to become big in the movie world. Billy Zane (who becomes the big head during Brotherhood of Justice) went on to star in the `Back To The Future' trilogy, that film with Nicole Kidman `Dead Calm', and played the snooty Cal Hockley in `Titanic'. Kiefer Sutherland has made a name for himself recently, starring in the TV series `24'. And Keanu Reeves . . . Well; I could go on forever with him, couldn't I? He has starred in a few turkeys in his time, and has made a name for himself from movies such as `Speed', `Johnny Mnemonic', `Matrix', `A Walk In The Clouds', and the `Bill & Ted' movies. You decide which ones were the turkeys!

Contrary to what SOME people say, Keanu Reeves is not "wooden" in all his films. Although, I'm sorry, to say, he is in this film. In his defence, it was one of his early films. He acts wooden, and his lines are just spoken without any emotion. And with that bad 80s haircut, and clothes . . .

This film isn't really worth watching, unless you're a big fan of Keanu Reeves. It won't be easy to find either, considering it's a TV movie, and is not well known.

5 out of 5 stars If you like Keanu, you must buy this!!.......2000-11-13

Keanu gives a good early performance as the rich boy vigilante Derek, who never puts a foot wrong.

He's the high school joke, has a great girlfriend and life is sweet.

But for him and his gang of 'do gooders' that isn't enough. They want to rule the world and won't let anything stand in their way.

The end doesn't justify the means and they get caught in the end...

My favourite line is 'I don't mean to burst your bubble' when Derek's younger idealistic brother asks him if he's in 'The Brotherhood'. How the young look up to their elders

Kellye Joy is right in saying that youngsters should see this lesson is morals. It will give them a sense of right from wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Satisfying Entertainment.......2006-03-15

Almost everything affects people differently partly because of their life experences.

Well, I was grown up around Jim Reeves' soothing voice. Uniquely, this voice is for me and happens to be for many others as well.

Must I try to describe why? I could give it a try, but right now I'm kind of not wanting to, howerever this I'll say.

Music as a whole is an illusion, it can make you feel all kinds of emotions. And where does it gets you? Maybe no where geographically, but psychicly it can covers millions of emotional distance.

Some music can just irritate you when you're tired or in some other discontent frame of mind, but I've got to say Mr. Jim Reeves has a voice you might want to stay away from, if you're afraid falling in love with a sentimental and peaceful mode.

If you have never heard
Jim, and I would even have to asked, "where have you been?" just listen to any song emits from his vocal cord, its easy to become a Jim's favorite listener. He's really kind of addictive.

4 out of 5 stars DVD - Jim Reeves story.......2005-02-25

I was so pleased with this DVD on Jim Reeves. It really showed the man himself in action and his wonderful voice. It was fun to learn more about him. However, I would have liked to have more PERSONAL information - like from his wife (what kind of husband he was? Did they have children?). This DVD is definitely worth the purchase and I plan to play it over and over again.

Thomas Jane stars as Beat writer and Jack Kerouac-crony Neal Cassady, in a promising film that quickly flops. Based on a letter Cassady wrote to Kerouac, the highly stylized film by Stephen Kay pretty much follows the former around as he does not much of anything at all. Keanu Reeves is incomprehensible as a friend of Cassady, and Kay's jazzy, angular, colliding style does nothing to illuminate the Beat icon's all-important internal life. If you're new to the whole Kerouac-Cassady-Beat world, this is not a good first stop; slightly better is John Byrum's 1980 Heart Beat, which at least introduces some of the principal figures. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars This isn't the last time he'll commit suicide.......2006-04-25

Hugely underrated film, most probably because of its art school-like visuals, "Suicide" is based upon an actual letter beat hero Neal Cassady wrote to Jack Kerouac about he and a girl almost but did not quite get the American Dream. Thomas Jane (who played Mickey Mantle in "61*") is equisite as Cassady, bringing a frenetic energy to the screen much in the way a Kerouac or Ginsburg reader would picture him and his smooth talking, car stealing self. Keanu Reeves surprises as Harry, the devil on Cassady's shoulder (who isn't actually based on any living person) who removes Cassady from his chance to hook back up with Joan and his future happiness. Gretchen Mol surprises as a hot, sexy underage sexpot Neal can't keep his hands off of. The acting is superb, the direction equally as good, and the writing brings us to the beat times of a beat god in a beat post-war world.

It all perfectly meshes with the soundtrack, a mix of classic and modern bebop that brings it all together.

4 out of 5 stars This movie is perfect for the restless. .......2005-12-07

I know very little about the Beat culture and have never read anything by Kerouac, but I still enjoyed this movie. And as other reviewers have said before, the movie doesn't really have a "point" and it's not trying to change your views on the world. What it is doing is telling a story about a young man who is fighting with himself. Neal Cassidy, at the point in his life this movie captures, is torn between a self that wants to settle down with a wife and kid and live in a house with a picket fence, and a self that wants to escape with few ties and see what exactly the world can offer him. I think it's a story that many people can relate to. I, personally, loved the movie. I enjoyed the way in which the told the story, I loved the music, and I thought the actors were fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars one that slipped through the cracks.......2005-03-04

It seems that this movie can only be appreciated by fans of beat literature. If you happen to be one, or are curious about the beats, this is a fantastic movie. The movie is a dramatization of a letter that Neal Cassidy, the muse of the beat generation, wrote his famous pal, Jack Kerouac. The film brings to life all the snappy, fireball energy that was Neal Cassidy while also demonstrating the subtle poetic irony that of the beat generation. If you don't know anything about the beats, or don't care to, then this one will leave you scratching your head. If, on the other hand, you can name three beat authors and a half a dozen Charlie Parker tunes off the top of your head, then you'd be a fool not check this one out. Get your hands on the soundtrack if you can too....

3 out of 5 stars Neal Cassady's Errant and Optimistic Youth........2004-01-20

"The Last Time I Committed Suicide" was adapted for the screen by director Stephen Kay from a letter written by Beat icon Neal Cassady to his friend, author Jack Kerouac. In this letter, Cassady recounted his youthful adventures in Denver in 1945-1946. During this time, Cassady supported himself working the graveyard shift for a tire company and spent his days chasing women, "borrowing" cars, and hanging out at the pool hall with an older deadbeat acquaintance named Harry. The film's sights and sounds often mimic Cassady's frenetic personality. His skirt-chasing and petty mischief are set to the sounds of bebop, and the film's cinematography sometimes exhibits a hyperactive nervousness. "The Last Time I Committed Suicide" doesn't seem to have a point...or even a focus. It is simply a dramatization of the events of Neal Cassady's life when he was 18-19 years old. He was no more or less aimless than than he was to become, although he did not yet consider aimlessness to be a vocation in itself. Actor Thomas Jane does a nice job as Cassady, although he appears too old for the part. Keanu Reeves put on some weight for his role, and he is convincing as Neal's vaguely creepy and frequently drunk pool hall buddy Harry. Adrien Brody and Gretchen Mol also contribute interesting supporting performances. This is not a bad movie. But the audience's reaction to this film is going to depend entirely upon their attitude toward -and knowledge of- the real Neal Cassady. "The Last Time I Committed Suicide" is simply a slice of his life. There is no attempt to place Cassady's experiences in any larger context, concrete or abstract. So the film doesn't have general appeal. You either find Cassady interesting or you don't. So I'm recommending "The Last Time I Committed Suicide" to fans of Neal Cassady and students of Beat culture. I doubt that anyone else will have much patience for it.

1 out of 5 stars If you are buying this for Keanu Reeves . . . Don't........2003-07-31

I only bought this for Keanu Reeves, and thankfully, it was only £3.99, so it wasn't too much of a waste. I also bought Tomb Raider, and was expecting to hate that, and like this. Funny that.

I survived a very long 28 minutes, and then switched it off. I just couldn't watch it anymore. I wasn't concentrating on it, and if I'm getting bored during a film, I will check how long has gone by. I first checked 15 minutes into the film.

I am crazy about Keanu Reeves, so I thought this film would be a good buy. Plus, it's not very well known, and I was shocked to find out it was made in 1997 - I thought it would have been early nineties or so. If you think Keanu Reeves is gorgeous, do not buy this. He looks about average. I dunno whether its due to the storyline or what, but he acts like he's drunk, and looks & acts like a total sleazebag. His hair looks greasy, and he just doesn't look like him!

Anyway, back to the film. None of the characters are introduced, leading to me get very confused about the lead character, who starts off the film, kissing a girl in a hospital, and then going home, and sleeping with another girl, who decides to slash her wrists just before I stopped watching. He then proceeds to run off with his "mate" Keanu Reeves, and pick up two girls along the way.

Maybe the film gets better later on, and maybe I'll watch it again sometime. But I'll need to be in a BIG Keanu mood to watch this again. Which is worse: Bram Stoker's Dracula or this?! I don't understand how a film can be based on a letter!

2 out of 5 stars Jim Reeves , Ray Price & Ernest Tubb DVD.......2006-08-19

While the slicked down hair of the guys, and the fluffy dresses and pig tails of the gals presented fond memories of the 1950s, I was disappointed in that most of the tunes performed by these three great artists, with a few exceptions, were relatively obscure tunes. The three perfomers did get equal playing time throughout the DVD which I felt was a good thing.

5 out of 5 stars great show.......2005-06-01

I bought this video on Reeves, Price name and Tubbs was a very pleasant surprise, one of my very favorites, buy it you'll love it

4 out of 5 stars They were country when country was still cool.......2003-09-02

If your idea of a Ray Price song is "Danny Boy" and if you like Jim Reeves but didn't know he recorded a song called "Mexican Joe", you probably won't like this fine DVD. However, if you can remember when Jim Reeves had fiddles - not violins - in his band, and you can recall a time when Ray Price ruled the Post-Hank world with the 4/4 shuffle beat and twin fiddles, you're in for a real treat.

For starters, with the exception of "Mexican Joe", I've never been a big Jim Reeves fan, but that's not big deal, because not only does this disc have my favorite Jim Reeves song, the other ones aren't that bad, especially since Jimmy Day is playing steel guitar on most of them.

But since I really like Ray Price, it doesn't matter if it's Jim Reeves or Jim Nabors footage on the DVD, because the Ray Price performances are classic. Of course, "Crazy Arms" is here. So are "I'll Be There", "You Done Me Wrong" and "Don't Let The Stars Get In Your Eyes". The only early Ray Price hits that are missing are "Release Me" and "Heartaches By The Number", but that can easily be overlooked on the strength of the songs that are present on this collection.

If this review was an infomercial, this would be the part where the voiceover says, "But wait! There's more!" In addition to Jim Reeves and Ray Price, there are seven Ernest Tubb performances included. Most of E.T.'s big hits are on Shanachie's highly recommended Ernest Tubb/Marty Robbins DVD, but there's some great Ernest Tubb tunes here, especially "That Wild and Wicked Look" and the divorce weeper, "Dear Judge".

All the footage on this disc was filmed between 1954 and 1956, before Nashville replaced the fiddle and steel guitar with flutes and oboes in attempt to regain fans lost to the Rock & Roll juggernaut. It might seem corny to today's country music fans, but this is the real deal, folks... in glorious mono and vibrant technicolor.

5 out of 5 stars Classic country at it's best.......2002-07-12

This DVD is an excellent collection from Gannaways "Tribute to the Grand Ole Opry Stars of the Fifties", resp. Classic Country Shows. It is a must-buy for every classic country fan.

5 out of 5 stars "Observed in Embrace With Female-Not His Mother!".......2005-10-10

This very funny film is great entertainment for the entire family, as Bob Hope tries to romance Rhonda Fleming on board a cruise while not getting caught by the very clean and upright boy scout type troop of young men he's leading called the Foresters. Having a suave killer on board who thinks Bob is the perfect patsy for a con doesn't help his chances much and before this one is over Bob will be, quite literally, in the doghouse!

Alexander Hall directed the shenanigans from a screenplay by Edmund Beloin, Melville Shavelson and Jack Rose. Beloin doubled as producer for this fun romp that has a nice score from Joseph J. Lilley and a couple of good songs by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans. Roland Yong plays the con man and killer with a real flair and Rhonda Fleming is a nice partner for Hope this time out.

Freddy Hunter (Hope) is leading a troop of Foresters on the boat back from Paris. He works for a newspaper in North Zainesville, Ohio, where the Foresters, one of whom's dad owns the paper, have won a contest with the prize being a trip to Paris. Freddy thought it would be a blast in Paris because he has a little black book he won in a raffle, but the constant eagle eye of the Forester's young leader, Stanley (Richard Lyon), has prevented him from enjoying a number of vices on the trip. By the time they're ready to board the ship for home, Freddy is ready to ditch them.

That is, until the Dutchess Alexandria (Rhonda Fleming) comes on board, prompting Freddy to throw his little black book overboard at the sight of her. She is traveling with her father, Grand Duke Maximillian (Roland Culver), and the two plan to parlay a valuable necklace into a more substantial fortune they can take back to their country, as theirs is gone. C. J. Dabney (Roland Young) spots them as a rich mark, ripe for the picking, and pegs Freddy as his new partner. Dabney never lets any of his partners in on what's going on, however, and they seem to all get strangled shortly after he's done with them!

Jim Backus is Higgins, the cop who's been on Dabney's trail for some time, but knows the only way to get the goods on the slippery and dangerous con is to catch him in the act. Freddy, who has been pretending to be rich at his new pal Dabney's suggestion, ends up fleecing the Grand Duke while he's romancing his daughter Alex. Once he realizes what's going on, and comes into contact with Higgins, he know's he's safe, at least as long as there is one person who knows he's innocent. But what will Freddy do when Higgins turns up strangled too?!

This is just a lot of fun for the entire family. Watching Hope attempt to thread a needle while a very amorous Fleming is all over him is a lot of laughs. Fleming had a nice voice and gets to sing a gypsy song to Hope that has him sweating bullets. He does, after all, have in his charge those Foresters, who would not approve of his tardiness for taps. Only little Tommy (Gary Gray) has any sympathy for Freddy and his vices. He is the only Forester who believes it wasn't Freddy who killed Higgins and brings him some food while he's hiding in a doghouse!

One of the funniest moments in the film comes when Stanley reads a list of charges directed at Freddy, whose behavior has not conformed to the code of the Foresters. Another sparkling moment stems from an encounter on board between Bob and the greatest comedian radio ever had, Jack Benny. Bob needs change for a 100 dollar bill, and if you know anything about Benny, you can guess the rest! It is a brief cameo but squeezes in a hilarious toupee joke and a funny swipe at Benny's thrifty ways.

There is a very funny ending that works out great for everyone, making this one of Bob's most enjoyable films. The same writers responsible for "Road to Rio," "My Favorite Brunette," and "The Prince and the Pirate" gave Hope another good story he made the most of. Don't miss Bob and his fun excursion with the Whippoorwill Patrol!

2 out of 5 stars pass this one up.......2004-10-17

The Brentwood version is of very poor quality. I love Bob Hope movies, but I'm sorry I spent the money on this one!

5 out of 5 stars Bob Hope at his best!.......2003-10-07

Mr. Hope stars as Freddie Hunter, a reporter who is chaperoning a troop of scouts aboard a ocean liner. The scouts see it as their duty to save Freddie from himself by making sure he doesn't smoke, drink or enjoy the hug of a woman "other than his Mom". The fact that the head boy of the troop is the son of Freddie's boss doesn't help Freddie when he decides to flirt with the Duchess Alexandria. But women are the least of Freddie's troubles. There is a killer on board. This killer decides to frame Freddie for his murderous deeds. Fortunately, there is a detective on board, hot on the trail of the true murderer, but wait, Freddie discovers the body of the murdered detective. How will Freddie prove his innocence? This is an entertaining film for the whole family. It also stars Rhonda Fleming, George Reeves, Jim Backus and Roland Young. So grab the popcorn, dim the lights and enjoy this wonderful movie!.

5 out of 5 stars 'Youngblood and Class'.......2004-03-30

Teenage angst was a popular theme for directors during the nineteen eighties, with films such as 'St. Elmo's Fire', 'The Outsiders', and 'The Breakfast Club' dominating our video rental stores and television screens. Cinemagoers had been introduced to a fresh bunch of actors, known predominantly through media circles as 'the brat pack'. Rob Lowe, the star of 'Class' and 'Youngblood', was one of these new and talented young actors.

'Class' tells the story of two Ivy League students participating in the kind of irresponsible antics associated with adolescence: late night trips to the nearby girls' school, using fake ID in order to buy alcohol, and smoking after 'lights out'. Foxfield is a fun place to be.

But the film has its dark side. Skip (Rob Lowe, 'Oxford Blues', 'The Outsiders'), is the self-confident joker, whose intention is to get into Harvard with as little effort - and as much fun - as possible. Although his parents are disgustingly wealthy, they are unhappy. Skip is aware of this, but nevertheless hides his fears and concerns behind an ostentatious exterior. Jonathan (Andrew McCarthy, 'Catholic Boys', 'Less than Zero', 'Pretty in Pink')finds Skip's overbearing personality hard to deal with at times. He is awkard and clumsy, lacking the charm and confidence exuded by his handsome roommate. Things change for Jonathan when he takes a trip to New York, but the change is transitory, and the tone of the movie rapidly adopts a melancholy atmosphere from that point onwards.

There are some memorable moments in 'Class', most notably the fight between Skip and Jonathan. The director has juxtaposed the humor and seriousness skilfully, and has succeeded in producing an entertaining and enjoyable teen film. Also stars Jaqueline Bissett, Cliff Robertson, John Cusack, Alan Ruck, and Casey Seimasko.

'Youngblood' sees Rob Lowe teaming up with Patrick Swayze ('The Outsiders', 'Red Dawn') for this ice hockey film that oozes testosterone. It is the story of a talented young ice hockey player who is offered a chance to play the sport professionally. But possessing a stubborn and highly strung character, can he succeed? If he fails, he will end up back on the family farm, somewhere out in the boondocks. 'Youngblood' offers action, drama, and romance. And Hockey. Also stars Ed Lauter, Cynthia Gibb, and Keanu Reeves.

This DVD is a worthwhile investment, as both films compensate for the limited extras.

Description

A delightfully winning comedy, Oyster Farmer is the story of Jack Flange, an enterprising young man, who robs a fish market and mails the cash to a secluded close-knit community of oyster farmers. When the parcel goes missing, and the police start coming around, he suspects the precious package was found by one of his neighbors, a local beauty named Pearl, to whom he becomes irresistibly attracted. Filmed along Australia's breathtakingly beautiful Hawkesbury River, Anna Reeves' deliciously surprising Oyster Farmer is a comedy about love, community and freshly-shucked oysters.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Rare and Precious Pearl of a Film.......2006-12-12

This one is definitely worth your time. You get a very interesting look at a subject you probably know nothing about: oysters and how they are raised. The movie is full of wonderfully odd characters, off-beat humor, and colorful language; these are truly people who march to their own beat, and the world be damned.
Look for Jack Thompson, the legendary Aussie actor who in this film plays the leader of a bunch of aging, reclusive jackpine savages, hard-bitten Vietnam vets (yes, there are Australian Vietnam vets). Listen carefully to their conversations; they've seen a lot in their time.
Listen also to the wonderful Irishman who clips up all the money, and uses the portraits on the bills to decorate a bathtub. That's something you don't see everyday.

4 out of 5 stars Not a thriller, not a moody character piece but a real charmer.......2006-05-22

Despite the kind of oppressively moody poster that empties theatres by painting it as a dour arthouse flick, Anna Reeves' Oyster Farmer is a pleasant surprise, an engaging comedy drama that flows along like a pleasant stretch of river. The plot is slight: Alex O'Loughlin robs a fish market with the aid of a pair of frozen lobsters and a fruit wrap and posts the money to himself on the stretch of his river where he's got a job on a failing oyster farm to fill in time while he waits for the postman. Only the money gets lost in the post before being cast adrift when the postman has a heart attack - which might seem a little contrived, but does allow the film to explore the various river dwellers he suspects may have ended up with the cash. It's no surprise that he finds love (with "the bastard child of a s*** collector," no less) and the possibility of a real home and future, but the film is far more interested in its likeable characters than breaking new narrative ground, and, with the exception of Jack Thompson's redundant (in both senses of the word) Vietnam vet who seems to have been drafted in solely to add a bit of star power, they're all richly drawn or appealing enough for you to go along with it with no complaints.

It's an Australian film through and through, so, naturally for tax reasons, it's technically a British co-production, which meant going to the absurd extremes of buying film stock from the UK, shipping it to Australia, shipping it back to England to be processed, doing the post-production in the UK and hiring a UK composer and actor to rack up enough points to qualify for those all important sale-and-leaseback requirements. Naturally, the film was never released in the UK. Luckily the UK actor is Bishop Brennan himself, Jim Norton (who gets throttled in one scene but not kicked in the arse by a priest, although he does get to give mouth to mouth to a dog). He gets all the best lines and all but walks off with the movie, but all the cast are on good form here, turning in likeable and believable performances that draw you into the not just the characters and the film but the place itself: take a bow David Field, Kerry Armstrong, Diana Glenn et al. Quietly delightful. The only downer is that the DVD has been needlessly panned-and-scanned from its original 2.35:1 ratio to 1.85:1.

4 out of 5 stars Pearl In the Oyster.......2006-04-03

If Hemingway's "Old Man and the Sea" is about fishing, then "Oyster Farmer" is about oyster farming. The story begins with a young man Jack Flange, who robs a fish market and mails the cash to an isolated village where oyster farming is the key business. When the parcel goes missing, he is forced to join the rest as oyster farmer and finds his suspects.

His evaluation of the villagers and interpretation of happenings in the village is solely about finding the bad guy who steals his money. Unfortunately, all his efforts are in vain. People there just care about how to grow better "oysters"; a father tries to reconcile with his daughter; a divorced husband tries to reconcile with his wife; a divorced woman tries to prove herself as a good oyster farmer. Getting rich is not in their equation of living.

Jack's search for the money and the greedy guy and the villagers' search for love and harmony forms the dialectic theme of the story. The village becomes the lost horizon for the city boy and the oyster becomes his salvation. The black, rough, and dirty shell of the oyster and the white, smooth and juicy oyster meat serves as vital symbol to guide us through the film. The meaning and implication of "Oyster Farmer" are soul reaching and rich. If it is not as great as Hemingway's, it is surely a good dose of chicken soup for the mind of metropolitan. Happiness in intelligent people is the rarest thing I know - Ernest Hemingway (1899 - 1961)

This movie is an absolute GEM! I simply cannot believe that there are no reviews of it. I can't remember where I heard about it, but when I knew that it was available through Amazon, I knew that I wanted to have a personal copy of the DVD. I really don't want to let any viewer know just what the movie
is about (the Amazon synopsis is very accurate), so I won't give
any specifics about the movie. I would prefer that you WATCH THIS MOVIE!! The acting is superb, and the scenery for the
photography is even more amazing. I loaned this movie to another "movie aficianodo" and she was as enthusiastic about its quality as well. It was filmed and released in 2004 in Australia, but very poorly marketed, and it wasn't until just recently that it was released in the US, in 2006. This Australian movie is truly phenomenal.
