Sinead O' Connor - Live: Year of The Horse/Value of Ignorance

Two live performances, one from 1988 and one from 1990, are included on this single disc, a potential boon for Sinead O'Connor fans but perhaps a mixed blessing for the uninitiated. The earlier of the two gigs, the 37-minute The Value of Ignorance, is not the Irish singer's finest moment; there are no shots of audience or band (primarily close ups of Sinead and her shaved head, all "enhanced" by amateurish and distracting visual effects added in post-production), and the music is no great shakes either, what with O'Connor's unpleasant wailing and a sludgy instrumental mix. Fortunately, The Year of the Horse is not only about twice as long but twice as good in virtually every sense: better sound and visuals, better songs, and a much better performance (the tunes performed in both shows, like "I Am Stretched on Your Grave" and "Jerusalem," bear witness to that). The Year of the Horse shows how much an artist can improve in two years, especially with a hit like "Nothing Compares 2 U" under her belt. A good thing, too, or O'Connor's recently announced retirement might have been forced on her a long time ago. --Sam Graham

When the show starts of with 'feel so different' and she is standing there, radiating with dignity, wearing a long coat and glasses, she delivers an amazing, and yet very simple song with only strings. 'nothing compares 2u' is another major highlight, the way that she changes from aggression to despair so frequently during that performance grabs the viewer and yanks them in and out her turmoil. Not to mention that it's also a beautiful song. The only thing that would have made this show better is if she incorporated the strings and drum when she does 'troy', which i think is her single, most amazing track, the original version, which was given new life in 2002 by DJ's. But she does it only accoustically, which I believe takes away its original power.
That new DVD, "goodnight, thank you . . ."is alright, one of Sinead's more average outings, but "the year of the horse" is an example of Sinead O'Connor that shows that she has put out a lot of average work, but when she is good, she is better than everyone else out there. There is no one like her. Stunning.

The Year of the Horse is definetly has more money behind it. Though still simple with the songs only being accented by lighting & camera editing. Sinead is still so pure, but you see the growth. Here you see everything from the band to a dancing Sinead. Incredibly saturated in nuiance. I love this show. I think nothing is more beautiful than how she brings all of these thousands of people together by her music...the entire audience sings along during some songs, & Sinead just smiles. I would too, I mean it's such a reality check to see what you've done & how you've affected others when the whole world sings with you. Chilling, & spiritual. I love this woman.
