If you want an hour with the master, you need look no farther than this production of the Jazz Channel and BET. A live concert performance by the 75-year-old blues legend, this video shows the robust King at the height of his guitar and singing powers. Though it's a little sad to see him forced to sit in a chair to perform, that impression is quickly wiped away by his music. Whether wringing stinging solos from Lucille, his beloved guitar, or singing songs as varied as "The Thrill Is Gone" and "Making Love Is Good for You," King is like some blues-soaked Buddha, so lively that you forget he's sitting down. He acts out a whole lifetime of drama in the facial expressions of a single guitar solo; multiply that times an hour and you've got a King so animated that you expect him to hop up and start dancing. --Marshall Fine

Fine BB.......2007-01-17
Lucille and BB were in fine form for this video. We really enjoyed listening and watching him play. And as typical of recent years, he lets others shine out while taking a step back. Worth having in the collection.
80 years young and still doing it.......2006-07-15
B.B. King still has it. Saw him in concert recently and the man had the audience on its feet.
Outstanding concert and DVD.......2004-01-02
This DVD does an excellent job of capturing the essence of the performances B.B. King puts on today. It's amazing the energy he continues to put into his music despite his age and infirmities. Ditto to the other reviews praising the production values. The DTS recording is superb. Great for fans, great to introduce newbies to the master.
Incredible clarity of sound and picture........2003-04-29
This is yet another great DVD I purchased at Amazon. This is BB King in concert taken from the BET network show BET on Jazz. This is a fairly recnt concert. BB sits while he performs now due to his age and weight I suppose. He still puts on a great show though. He has the whole band with him and a horn section. This DVD is encoded in the DTS format. If you haven't heard DVDs in DTS you don't know what your missing. It opens the sound up that much more and you hear greater separation and clarity. The sound quality on this DVD is just incredible. My hat's off to whomever recorded and mixed this concert. There's a few other BB DVDs out there and they are all good, but the sound on this one beats them. If you have a good sourround sound system (with DTS) and you play this DVD and close your eyes you would swear you were listening to BB live. It's that good. A great choice to add to your DVD collection.
This is a MUST HAVE dvd.......2003-04-22
...well neither is winning a million dollars!!!! This dvd is great. "Making Love is Good for You" is a great tune. Hey the man is a couple of years shy of 80 years old... and can still make beautiful music. "Please Accept My Love" is sweet song and good introduction to "Makin' love is good for you". Heck if you ain't seen the man play it's about high time. You will not be dissatisfied. The sound is great and the "Interview with B.B. King" segment is great too...... Buy this dvd!!!

Doo wop is dead, and nothing, not even the silky voice of ex-Drifter Ben E. King, can bring back the dominant black pop music of the mid- to late 1950s. All King can do is revive the songs for nostalgic purposes, as evident by the middle-aged audience that sits politely for this 18-song set consisting mostly of golden oldies from King's days with the Drifters. The happy news is that King hasn't lost any of the vocal flair that made him a star. He's mellowed considerably, having lost the dynamic range that gave his best-loved songs ("There Goes My Baby," "This Magic Moment," etc.) that extra touch of depth and soul. Here, King is a smoother vocalist who respects the simple, melodic beauty of his music, and what he lacks in pizzazz he makes up for in professional polish, with a young band of musicians who back him with slick efficiency.
Visually, this Jazz Channel concert (recorded in 2000) is no different than an appearance on the Tonight Show or any other popular showcase; the routine stage and lighting remain static throughout. King isn't very strong on patter, but the DVD's welcomed "Meet the Artist" feature proves that he's a wellspring of anecdotal history and worthy advice to young musicians. Better, then, to focus on King's easy-going presence, the tight ensemble, and the simple pleasure of latter-day renditions of "Stand By Me," "Under the Boardwalk," "Under the Roof," and other standards that have proven their timeless appeal. Doo wop may be dead, but its echoes are as clear as ever. --Jeff Shannon

ben e king on bet the jazz channel.......2007-05-13
i have been a fan of ben e king for a very long time ,i know this is one of is best performance, i want more.
Ben E. KIng.......2004-11-18
Even though I read all the previous reviews, and had considered NOT buying this DVD, in a weak moment I bought it. And I am SORRY I did. Ben E. KIng just doesnt have it anymore as a singer. That once tremendous, wonderful voice is NOT there anymore!! Save your money!! Dont buy it!!!
Technical quality: 10, Soul: 0.......2003-06-24
Very nicely recorded in 5.1 surround sound. Excellent musicianship. Very poor arragements. Absolutely soul-less. Those looking for hot versions of earlier hits, please look elsewhere. There is nothing here that justifies purchasing this disk. Nothing.
Past his Prime.......2001-10-29
A great collection of songs, to bad he can't sing anymore. His voice cracks anytime he is expected to carry a note. Check out the B.B. King instead, it's GREAT!
responding to Jeff Shannon review.......2001-06-02
Being a long time fan of Ben E. King's, I am very happy that a performance of his has been released on DVD. I would like to respond to Jeff Shannon's review, because it is full of errors. First, fan or not, Doowop is far from dead. PBS's Doo-Wop 50 special was their most succsessful special in years. Two more specials were ordered. It also brought in alot of pledges. Rhino Records Doo-Wop Box is their best selling box set, and Rhino has more box sets then any other company. Volume 2 & 3 were also big sellers. current groups like N'Sync, The Backstreet Boys, Boyz To Men, etc. are based on Doo-Wop groups. That being said, Ben E. King is/was not a Doo-Wop singer. He was a "Soul" or R&B singer. He started out as lead singer of The Drifters, on songs like "Save The Last Dance For Me", This Magic Moment", "I Count The Tears","There Goes My Baby" etc, but found most of his fame as a solo artist with hits like "I Who Have Nothing", Spanish Harlem", "Don't Play That Song", "Supernatural Thing", "Amore", and of course "Stand By Me". Also his first hit was in 1960, not the mid-50's. Just wanted to get the facts right.
