With its modest special effects, lean plot, and small cast of lesser stars, this 1951 thriller remains a sturdy blueprint for fusing horror and science fiction. The formula has been employed countless times since, fleshed out with more extensive and elaborate production values, and manned by higher profiled marquee names, but the results have yet to improve on The Thing from Another World, Howard Hawks's lone foray into sci-fi.

The story begins as military airmen are dispatched to a remote Arctic research station where scientists have detected the crash of a spacecraft. An effort to retrieve the saucer-shaped vehicle fails, but the team returns to the station with the frozen body of its sole occupant. When the extraterrestrial pilot is accidentally thawed, the crew, headed by a tough-talking pilot (Kenneth Tobey), grapples with a massive, chlorophyll-based humanoid (James Arness) thirsty for blood and in no mood for galactic diplomacy.

Hawks takes only a production credit for this low-budget exercise, but his filmmaking style transcends Christian Nyby's nominal direction: rapid-fire, overlapping dialogue, an ensemble of comrades whose professionalism is tempered by wisecracks, and unsentimental female characters (embodied by feisty romantic interest Margaret Sheridan) recall Hawks's signature works, while propelling the plot over any potential gaps in credibility. It's hardly surprising, then, that The Thing from Another World remains among the most influential science fiction movies ever shot, or that it remains exciting entertainment a half century later. --Sam Sutherland

3 out of 5 stars Make it 3 and a half.......2007-04-11

I love this film- it is well paced and atmospheric and is not afraid to ask difficult questions about the morality of actions. It is, however, very much of its time and that means some wooden acting and ropey special effects - although in general both are of a much higher standard than equivalent productions. It also means some credibility- stretching actions by some of the characters and a rushed finish. It remains amongst the finest sci-fi/horror film ever made though - and whilst the re-make was better - it was not by much.

This is the original. The remake is 'The Thing.'
Both movies are great. I suggest that you own both of them and compare.

4 out of 5 stars A classic of its time and genre.......2007-03-30

It was the early 1950's. The military (which, having only a few years previous saved the nation from European fascism) was still held in high esteem and was busily saving the nation from international Communism. The novel and frightening spectre of atomic energy was evident only in the ubiquitous looming threat of "The Bomb" and a lot of people were beginning to wonder if science hadn't gotten out of hand. The possibility of high-tech invasion from afar was never far from the public consciousness.

And then, of course, there were those disturbing reports of strange and elusive aerial objects that evaded our defenses at will and left our armed forces standing flat-footed . . . Everyone was uneasy.

But Hollywood was equal to the challenge.

The motion picture industry's response was a long string of low-budget thrillers aimed chiefly, I think, at the Saturday Matinee crowd but equally appealing to anyone with an imagination. The Saturday early shows would find theatres packed with prepubescents (myself among them) shivering in their boots as a succession of monsters, mutants and extraterrestrial murderers visited mayhem on any civilized enclave larger than a few huts. It was a wonderful time to be a kid.

Some of those productions stretched the credulity even of a ten-year-old, but others were actually well put together, competently directed, and scary as hell even without flashy special effects. "The Thing From Another World" (popularly known just as "The Thing") was among the best of them.

OK - the script didn't call for great depth from the actors, but this was a very plot-driven genre. Film was black and white and so was morality; the characters didn't need to agonize endlessly over their own motivations. In fact they didn't have time to - they'd have been eaten alive by the bad guy if they did. The simplicity of it all is gratifying.

The story in a nutshell: A team of crack Air Force personnel is called to the Arctic to answer a distress call from a group of scientists on a long term project there. The nature of the distress becomes all too evident as the plot unfolds . . . and that's all I'm going to say.

A newer version of this movie was released much later, sometime in the 1980's, I think (or maybe the early 90's?) At any rate, a comparison between the two of them is not appropriate; they are two different genres. In fact, they are two different movies.

If you are one of those poor drudges unimaginative enough to require a visual elucidation of every droop of blood, every spot of gore, then you may not find this movie satisfying. If you are so narrow minded as to be put off by the mores and social customs of a bygone era, sorry, you will probably be too offended to enjoy the show.

But if what you're really interested in is a rollicking good story, then I can hardly offer better advice than that provided by the excited newspaperman reporting the events from that far flung outpost in the snowy north . . .

"Watch the skies! Keep watching the skies!"

And watch this movie, too.

4 out of 5 stars LOVE IT.......2007-02-13

Anyone who likes the old sci-fi and horror films has got to see this one. It was great, suspensful, and wildly entertaining. I mean, how can you beat some bumbling scientists who accidentally unleash an extraterrestrial monster on themselves while they're snowed in in the middle of nowhere? And, of course, you've got the attractive female and male scientist who fall in love. That's a must for these old flix. And the crazy scientist who wants to protect the monster for the sake of research. This one has it all.

4 out of 5 stars Mashall Dillon on a ramage.......2007-02-05

This is is first movie and it is a wonderful cross-over movie during the Science Fiction genre to Horror. It is very well done, considering it is totally inaccurate.

John Carpenter's The Thing was taken from this movie. When you watch it objectivly you can see he kept the same feeling, but updated it. Plus he jump started Kurt Russell's career.

Two thumbs up for you John!

Standing in the Shadows of Motown is a must-see film for any fan of the Supremes, the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, or any other classic Motown stars. This swinging documentary celebrates the Funk Brothers--the team of studio musicians who powered dozens and dozens of hit Motown songs--by combining reminiscences, reenactments, and clips from a recent concert put on by the Funk Brothers, featuring singers like Chaka Khan, Ben Harper, and Joan Osborne on classic tunes like "What's Going On," "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," and "Heatwave." This crafty gang of elderly musicians will charm your pants off with a slew of entertaining anecdotes. Though it seems that there's a lot of dirt they're declining to dish, the movie deftly outlines the history of Motown, surely the most significant music label in American history--the label that turned segregated "race music" into chart-topping success. A soulful delight. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Detroit, Michigan, 1959. Berry Gordy gathers the best musicians from the city's thriving jazz and blues scene for his new record company: Motown. For the next 14 years these players are the heartbeat on "My Girl," "Baby Love," "Ooo Baby Baby," "Bernadette," "I Was Made To Love Her," "I Heard It Through The Grapevine," "Dancing In The Street," and every other hit from Motown's Detroit era. By the end of their phenomenal run, the unheralded group of musicians plays on more Number One hits than the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, and The Beatles combined, making them the greatest hit machine in the history of popular music. They call themselves the Funk Brothers. But no one knows their names...this is their story.

This might be the best 10 bucks you'll ever spend if you like Motown or heck if you like music. It leaves you wanting to know more and many of us who grew up with this music should know more. While some of their stories are heartbreaking it was a pleasure to see Pistol Allen smiling behind the drums even though he was so sick he would die shortly after the completion of the film. It was a sad moment too when two of the surviving brothers describe their last encounter with James Jamerson who would die the day after their visit. But there is fun too, fun for the Funk Brothers and fun for us as we are honored to hear these guys play and play they still can. The band is still very tight and very good. The vocalist do an admirable job of interpreting the hits. It would have been nice to have been graced with Marvin Gaye's and David Ruffin's presence but this is about the Funk Brothers and I for one am damn glad I got to see it.
Thanks to Dr. Lick's for putting this together.

2 out of 5 stars Motown disappointment.......2007-06-27

I was looking forward to seeing the actual footage of the singers. I do appreciate the story of the fellows behind the artists but still, I think the video would have been more enjoyable had they included the actual singers.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!.......2007-06-18

I rented this from Blockbuster, and immediately bought it. It's sooooo good and informative, I can't describe it. I loaned it to someone who stayed up until 2:00 a.m. to see the whole thing. There are absolutely great live performances from: the late Gerald Levert, (His "Shotgun" is outstanding) Me'shell Indegeocello (sp.)(who sexes up "You Really Got A Hold On Me"), Bootsy Collins, ("Cool Jerk"). Joan Osborne does a great ("What Becomes of the Broken Hearted") and Ben Harper all sing 2 songs. (The only performance I HATED was Ben Harper's "Heard it through the Grapevine"). Chaka Khan, Montell Jordan & Tom Scott also appear. The remaining "Funk Brothers" musicians who played behind the Motown groups, tell funny stories about each other, how they met, Berry Gordy and the label's performers. They even go to "Hitsville" where it all started. There are reinactments, and old photos. It's so good I've seen it at least six times. You will almost cry at the finale when they introduce everyone, even the musicians that have passed away. Their photos are on stage with the remaining members. There is a second disc of extras that I have yet to finish, but the movie itself is wonderful. I've watched it with Black and White people, young and old, and everyone loves it. Go get it. Now.

5 out of 5 stars I never really liked Motown..........2007-05-25

...and the Motown sound. I saw it as a saccharine, watered-down parody of Soul for mass consumption.

This DVD changed all that for me.

The story of the Funk Brothers and their different personalities --personal and musical-- was fascinating and a revelation. The music is top-notch and the modern vocalists they got for this film and for the excellent soundtrack --buy it, even if you think you don't like the Motown sound-- bring out the magic of those famous tunes I dismissed at an earlier age.

Maybe the current crop of singers have more soul or more influences to draw on than the originals artists, or maybe the engineers/producers sucked some of the guts out of the original tracks... I don't know, but these songs sound great!

What is more or less the same is the line-up of the Funk Brothers, finally getting a very small measure of the recognition they deserve.

The filmmakers and the the artists featured in this film turned me from detractor to a fan of the Motown sound. I can't give a better review than that.

If you like music documentaries and you haven't seen this one, you're missing one of the best!

5 out of 5 stars Standing In The Shadows of Motown.......2007-05-14

Excellent documentary brings to light the artists behind the music that was the "Motown Sound".

Much like the late Rodney Dangerfield, some films just can't get any respect. Shelved by Miramax for two years, An Unfinished Life was released with little fanfare between Morgan Freeman's Oscar win and Lasse Hallström's higher-profile Casanova. Despite critical praise from some quarters, the heartland drama got lost amidst the shuffle. The title comes from the epitaph of Griffin, late son of Wyoming rancher Einar (a rumpled Robert Redford). Between chores, he looks after ranch hand Mitch (Freeman), who was mauled by a bear the year before. One day, daughter-in-law Jean (Jennifer Lopez) and granddaughter Griff (Becca Gardner) drop by the ranch unexpectedly. They're on the run from Jean's abusive boyfriend, Gary (Damian Lewis), back in Iowa. "I don't want you here," Einar states flatly--he blames her for Griffin's death 12 years ago--but the look on the kid's face convinces him to relent. While Jean works as a waitress in town and embarks on a tentative relationship with Sheriff Crane (Josh Lucas), his newfound granddaughter helps to take care of Mitch. Just as the four are starting to form a loose-knit family, Gary comes looking for Jean and upsets the delicate balance. It may pack fewer surprises than the superior What's Eating Gilbert Grape and the bear symbolism may be a mite heavy-handed, but the deeply unfashionable An Unfinished Life deserves a second chance to find an audience. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

4 out of 5 stars a great little movie.......2007-06-27

I didn't think I would be around long enough to EVER see Robert Redford looking crabby and scruffy............but I have! Will wonders never cease?
This movie has the greatest cast ever! Morgan Freeman, Jennifer Lopez and Josh Lucas (what a honey he is)round out the characters....sorry, I can't remember the little girl's name...she was good, as well.

The scenery was beautiful....it has love, drama, comedy, and a happy ending; what more do you want? You need to own this movie........it's one to watch when the family comes over!!!! I loved it!!!
ps.....it has animals, too!!!

5 out of 5 stars Lasse Hallstrom rules........2007-06-22

He's simply the best film-maker ever for smart grown-ups. This fine film is yet another in a long series of knock-outs. He is an actor's director, with a particular knack for drawing fantastic performances out of kids. He also does beautiful landscapes, and conveys his `exotic' locations and period pieces with an exquisite eye for detail and authenticity. The guy is a treasure, a gift to us all. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best movies I have seen.......2007-06-09

I don't understand why this movie is overlooked and under rated.. The wonderful storyline, the outstanding cast and the cinematography is outstanding! Robert Redford is always at his best, as is Morgan Freeman and J.Lo shines is this drama..It truly has some remarkable, hold your breath, omg scenes and equally some heart tugging ones..I don't like the tag of "chick Flick" as it really isnt as it really has some shocking, hold your breath scenes, even tho it is classified as a "Western", again it really cannot be classified into one Genre.. It IS a excellent movie for all..

5 out of 5 stars Good little movie........2007-06-05

I enjoyed the entertainment of the story line and the high quality acting by all the actors.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Surprise.......2007-05-20

My wife came home with a rented DVD tonight; although I pride myself on trying to keep up with the latest films--what's good, what's not, etc., I had never even *heard* of this film. But I looked at the cast: Redford, Freeman (who is *always* good!), J Lo (yawn--but I was surprised!), etc., I thought "OK, I'll watch".

I was hooked with the opening scene, as a Grizzly Bear wanders through the Wyoming landscape; then, it took a little while for the film to get going, but then it started "clicking". What makes this film work on so many levels is the brilliant acting of Robert Redford (his finest in *years*--he should have been nominated for an Oscar for this one), Morgan Freeman (again, as always), and even J Lo turns in a credible performance. The little girl is very believable, as well.

The film's themes of the importance of family, forgiveness, redemption, etc are handled very well. And all of this against an absolutely gorgeous Wyoming background which was mesmerizing on my Widescreen TV!

This film was HIGHLY satisfying, and I'm going to order it ASAP. Get this and watch it with your family; you won't be sorry.

So bad it's good, the notorious Gwendoline is one of those outrageously entertaining camp classics that will be enjoyed long after thousands of "better" movies have faded into obscurity. Loosely adapted from John Willie's pioneering 1940s comic strip "The Adventures of Sweet Gwendoline," and directed with good-natured humor by French softcore specialist Just Jaekin (Emmanuelle, The Story of O), this delirious dose of mainstream erotica plays like a sexy parody of Raiders of the Lost Ark and Romancing the Stone. In his own audacious fashion, Jaekin was attempting an ambitious, good-looking adventure with above-average production values, but Gwendoline owes its "bad movie" cult status to its cheesy combination of globe-hopping scenery, tacky sets, hopelessly wretched dialogue, laughably awful acting, and a constant parade of beautiful women, either half-naked or scantily clad in outrageous S&M costumes. The film is also notorious for being the screen debut of Tawny Kitaen (shortly before she appeared with Tom Hanks Bachelor Party), who brings a breathtaking lack of talent (and a very hot body) to her title role as Gwendoline, a scrappy stowaway who arrives in China on a quest to find her missing father, who'd ventured into remote jungles in search of a rare and beautiful butterfly.

Joined by hunky mercenary Willard (Brent Huff) and her loopy friend Beth (played by French model/actress Zabou), Gwendoline survives a variety of absurdly amusing obstacles (including one very phony-looking alligator) until they eventually reach the land of the Yik Yak, an Amazonian slave-culture consisting entirely of slim, sexy women! Through it all, Jaekin's image of women is a source of constant fascination: When they're not kicking ass or running around topless, Kitaen and Zabou act like helpless, virginal airheads who need a man to survive, and Gwendoline plays out like an adolescent wet dream. With a climactic chariot chase that must be seen to be believed, it's all so ridiculous that you can't help but be entertained, and Jaekin's 106-minute, French-language director's cut contains several action scenes that were cut for the film's English-dubbed 88-minute American version, released (and available separately) as The Perils of Gwendoline in the Land of the Yik Yak. --Jeff Shannon

On the DVD
Jaekin's original cut has been spectacularly restored for this Severin Films DVD release, with both French and English audio tracks and a delightful commentary by Jaekin with journalist/author Tony Crawley and Frederick Levier, former contributor to Starfix, a French magazine devoted to fantastic films; their unabashed enthusiasm for the film makes this commentary an unexpected treat. Also included: a 24-minute video interview with Jaekin, in which he discusses the production history of Gwendoline; a 10-photo gallery of Tawny Kitaen from the French softcore magazine Lui; and a fascinating vintage audio interview with Sweet Gwendoline creator John Willie, from the archives of sex-research pioneer Dr. Alfred Kinsey. Kudos to Severin Films for including these high-quality bonus features with a film that many consider one of the "worst" of the 1980s! One caveat, however: Why not include the American cut Perils of Gwendoline on a second disc, instead of as a separate DVD release? --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars "don't put it away... throw it with great force!".......2007-07-04

Gosh, this is -without any trace of a doubt - THE silliest and stupidest movie I have even seen.

In the Soviet Russia in the 80s, when I was in the university, the only source of information about Western (made in West, not just the cowboy stuff) movies - besides the officially approved and thus empty editions - was a couple of obscure and very cheezy Polish magazines, printed on bad paper with smudged photos and unreadable texts. "Gwendoline" was a sensation with them and they dedicated article after article to the movie (they did the same with Emmanuelle and other softcore masterpieces).
So I finally decided to find out what was all the frenzy about.

Well , the 70s and 80s are over (thanks for small mercies) and the movie proved to be so bad, that it is not even good. You know, how we often say - oh, it is so bad it is delicious. This is not the case. This one clearly transcends the stage "so bad, it is actully good" and goes into "oh boy, bad is not the word".

Even softcore adventures should have at least one good idea, one good laugh and one good line per movie. This one does not. Girls look good (nobody argues) , the boy looks great (very neat six-pack) , costumes (if you can call them that) are rather abbreviated.

Usually when I do not like a movie and do not intend to keep it, I give it away. In this case I dropped it into trash as I would have been too ashamed to give it to anybody - not because of the naked bodies, but due to sheer stupidy of the film.

2 out of 5 stars A Faulty Memory.......2007-06-12

I remembered this movie from high school as a mildly amusing adventure story with some pretty girls showing some of their charms. I had a faulty memory.

The pretty girls are there. Tawny Kitaen and Zabou and definitely easy on the eyes and they show themselves off quite a bit. So do a lot of other girls but those are nothing to stick in the memory. The problem though is with the story.

It is a silly adventure story but it is much worse than I remembered. A girl devotes herself to finding the butterfly her scientist father died trying to find. She is aided by her girl sidekick and by a mercenary guide. They find the butterfly and a lost civilization of Amazons with nefarious plans. Silly but the background is worse.

What I did not remember or realize from all those years ago is that this is some sort of fetish film intended to excite those who like seeing women wear leather and be led around on leashes. Blah!

It was watchable but not very good.

3 out of 5 stars Funny, sexy, but weird.......2007-05-30

This movie is a typical sexy B-movie, but it has enough scenery to keep your attention while trying to find the plot. We watched this twice through, and each time was about the same. Funny, sexy, but kinda cheap and amateurish, like most B-movies can tend to be. Knowing that you are not getting this movie for the plot or action scenes, but for the scenery and Tawny, you can settle in and enjoy this movie. There are a couple of scenes that are a bit gross, but overall it isn't as bad of a movie as I had expected. And yes, Tawny does look good in it. :)

5 out of 5 stars Gwendoline - Unrated Director's Cut .......2007-05-08

Great female adventure film where the female gets to have just as much fun as her male counter-part.

3 out of 5 stars If you like a full sweater and an empty head, this one's for you........2007-05-07

It is what it is, a skin-flick with Tawny Kitaen.

This movie follows the unwritten law of sequels: bring back the same characters and put them in similar jeopardy with slightly tweaked circumstances. Instead of a cross-country journey, this time the pet trio must get from the San Francisco airport across the Golden Gate Bridge to their suburban home. Michael J. Fox and Sally Field return as the voices of Chance the bulldog and Sassy the cat, with Ralph Waite replacing the late Don Ameche as the elderly golden retriever. Their journey features dogfights, house fires, an epic battle with a pair of petnappers, and a love affair for Chance with a stray from the other side of the bridge (Carla Gugino). Sinbad voices another dog who guides them through the mean streets of the city by the bay, and Robert Hays stars as the father, but, frankly, that hardly matters. What does is the animals' banter, and they're funny. (Ages 3 and up) --Kimberly Heinrichs

Description

Your favorite trio of talking animals is back in this action-packed Disney adventure that'll have the whole family bursting with excitement and laughter! Michael J. Fox, Sally Field, and Ralph Waite supply the voices of Chance, the American bulldog; Sassy, the Himalayan cat; and Shadow, the golden retriever -- and Sinbad speaks for their newfound canine friend, Riley -- in this critically acclaimed sequel to Disney's now-classic HOMEWARD BOUND: THE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY. When the pets accidentally get separated from their vacationing owners, Chance, Shadow, and Sassy navigate the mean streets of San Francisco, trying to find their home across the Golden Gate Bridge. But the road is blocked by a series of hazards, both man and beast. It's another incredible journey for three very brave, very lovable pets, in a thrilling, funny adventure that's 'bound to please' (New York Post) the entire family!

This was a truly a very wonderful movie. It picks where the first one left off. I would say that this another one that is entertaining to all. Thank you to Disney studios for this one and The Incredible Journey.

5 out of 5 stars Homeward Bound II - Lost in San Francisco.......2007-01-04

5 out of 5 stars GREAT family movies.......2007-01-02

This movie is great ALL my kids loved it from ages 9-16 and even us parents enjoyed it alot. SUPER FUNNY and heartwarming.

4 out of 5 stars Those Lovable Critters are Back!.......2006-07-03

This movie is the third movie that Disney has made using the same theme. The first was 1963's "The Incredible Journey." The second was essentially a remake of the first, "Homeward Bound." In the remake the animals talked rather than having a narration. This movie capitalizes on the success of the original with a variation on the theme of the original.

This time our three friends, Shadow, a golden retriever, Sassy, a Himalayan cat, and Chance, an American bulldog escape from their cages at San Francisco International Airport, thinking they are going to "the bad place," though they are actually heading for a vacation. Once their family arrives at their destination, they learn the animals have escaped and arrange to return home to find them. We see very little of the family after that except to see their concern and a few moments at the end of the movie.

The focus is on the antics of the three critters. Chance, voiced by Ralph Waite, is always focused on getting home and being safe. Sassy, voiced by Sally Field, is aloof and sarcastic, taking every advantage of spitting out a one-liner about any particular situation, most especially anything involving Chance. Chance, voiced by Michael J. Fox, is the oblivious goofball who attempts to interpret everything he sees in his own bizarre, usually wrong, way. Chance makes a perfect target for Sassy's barbed comments.

We follow the three animals, who really are friends, as they journey through San Francisco, trying to locate the Golden Gate Bridge and the way home. Along the way they encounter dog thieves looking for laboratory dogs, a fire, mean dogs and friendly dogs who do not understand how these three could want to go back to humans because of the experiences these strays have had with humans.

This story has everything you could want in an adventure story about dogs. There is love, humor, and a happy, nearly hilarious ending. While this story is not quite up to par with the original or the remake, it is readily worth watching with the kids more than once, especially if you are looking for an easy laugh. Even the youngest children in the family will enjoy this one, especially after the brief moments when things look dark for the animals. Just be prepared to say no when your little ones ask for a puppy or a kitten. Enjoy!

Davey Osborne is an imaginative youngster who loves role-playing games, and who often enlists the aid of his best friend, an imaginary super-spy named Jack Flack. One day he witnesses a real murder of an FBI agent who passes a videogame called "Cloak & Dagger" to him before he dies. When the police come, the body is gone, and no one will believe him, including his father, Col. Hal Osborne. Soon Davey finds himself up to his neck in hairbreadth escapes, real bullets, and slam-bang action as the hitmen close in. Can Jack save him before time runs out? Cloak & Dagger stars Henry Thomas of E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Dabney Coleman in a dual role of Jack and Davey's father, and Michael Murphy.

Who should a kid's hero be? In this underrated adventure-comedy, that's the central issue. Henry Thomas, fresh from E.T., plays a San Antonio kid whose father (Dabney Coleman) doesn't spend nearly enough time with him. So the boy loses himself in video games--and even has an imaginary friend (also played by Coleman), a super-resourceful secret agent. When he accidentally comes into possession of a spy group's secret plans, and winds up on the run from them, he must learn to rely on himself (and his imaginary pal) to save his skin. But, in the end, Dad proves to be his real hero in this engaging and solid family film. --Marshall Fine

Spike Lee's longtime cinematographer, Ernest R. Dickerson, made his directorial debut with this violent story about four Harlem teens whose lives are changed when a store robbery goes wrong. The film has been likened to an urban The Wild Bunch, but it is far too artificial for that. With Dickerson's eye, Juice understandably looks great, but at the end of the day it is only a slightly better version of the heavily clichéd crime movies that have artificially dominated perceptions of black cinema in the U.S. in the '90s. Rap fans might enjoy seeing some familiar stars on board, including Queen Latifah and Tupac Shakur. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Honest movie opinion.......2007-05-30

I choose this movie because it's a movie that I can relate too going threw my teen years in the early 90's.

4 out of 5 stars Good debut from Shakur.......2007-05-17

Made in 1992, the clothes, hair and music all cry early 1990s. Ernest Dickerson's gritty street drama about four friends who grew up together in Harlem is emotional, convincing, yet not complete. Epps is great and the highlight of the film as `Q' the man in the crew which is skeptical about robbing a grocery store. Shakur gives a convincing over-the-top performance as `Bishop' the instigator and heart of the group, although Shakur has done better in films such as `Gridlock'd' and `Above the Rim'. Jermaine Hopkins and Khalil Kain were also good as the other two members of the crew. Samuel L. Jackson also gives a very cool performance as trip a local bar owner. Overall a good film, with some not so realistic plot turns, but still great message and characters.

    5 out of 5 stars PURE GENIUS.......2007-05-17

R Kelly stumbled upon pure genius when recording this. This is a never-ending suspenseful thriller from start to finish. Read these quotes as if R Kelly was singing and you will understand. "What's that smell.....I think someone just broke wind" "Oh my god it was a midget..midget..midget". Best short film ever made!

    4 out of 5 stars A guilty pleasure.......2007-04-11

Once you watch these, you will be hooked. Whether it's to bash it, laugh along with it or at it, or to even..*gasp* love it, it really has something for everyone.

    R. Kelly has brilliantly come up with a story that is just so non-sensical and ridiculous that you can't help but to be caught up in it. What starts as a simple one night cheating session turns into one of the most complicated and twisted stories ever. It seems that the main character played by R. Kelly isn't the only one sleeping around. As each song comes to a close we find out there is yet another twist to look forward to in the next chapter of the song. And more and more people get involved into the never ending tale.

I'll admit it, flat out. I'm not a fan of R&B music or R. Kelly. But something drew me to this "urban opera" as Kelly proudly calls this that now makes me a fan of R. Kelly. This is something that I think someone from any background or origin can get into. It is almost like watching the WWE or a soap opera in the morning just with a musical theme to it. And the music is actually fun. While the song comes off more like speaking to a tune with a rhyme to it, it has a great beat and sound to it that keeps everything flowing well together in each chapter. And you can't take it seriously. Of course the events that go on in each chapter are silly and far fetched. He touches on a little bit of everything. Cheating, gay couples, dwarfs, convicts, nosey neighbors, his great impression of a white southern house wife and even the crooked cop shows up. You name it and it shows up in these videos. There are some part that are laugh out loud funny while other parts that just make you wonder where he came up with some of this as it is so forced and strange to suddenly be showing up. But they don't try to be a serious take on urban life, it is more of a mocumentary of just weird occurances. Anyone taking this too seriously shouldn't be watching this as that is not at all what this is trying to portray. If anything it seems like its just having fun through music and corny situations and it's a very unique and fun experience for the most part.

If it weren't for the silliness and just drawn out situations that this gets into as we get deeper into the story this would easily be a five star recomendation. But that's not to say that this is not worth checking out and owning. I think anyone who likes some good music, some fun situations and something you will definitely watch more then once, you can't go wrong here. There is a reason why this has been spoofed and referenced in so many places. Its just that original and fresh and unique an idea that R. Kelly came up with here, that it is hard not to get addicted to these videos and the music as well. I won't say this deserves an award or anything for great music and acting but I will say I was very pleasently surprised when I saw it for myself. R. Kelly in his own way has come up with something here and I say don't judge it till you see it. Whether you cringe, laugh or get into the music, you will find something to enjoy with his Urban Opera. I know I sure did.

    5 out of 5 stars Can't Look Away.......2007-03-30

Watching "Trapped in the Closet" is exactly like watching a car accident. Specifically, a short bus has run a travelling carnival off the road, and now there's a riot. But they're not really fighting, they are dance-fighting like "West Side Story." And then the cops show up, and they let loose with a bunch of tear gas, but the tear gas is just stink bombs.

I'm obsessed with this movie for all the wrong reasons.

    5 out of 5 stars Funny.......2007-01-26

Get stoned and watch this movie, i have never laughed so hard in my life!

4 out of 5 stars You should watch this movie, now you're buying this movie, now you're watching this movie.......2007-01-21

After hearing the first five "chapters" in this musical soap opera, I thought I was prepared for the music videos that followed the "saga" up to its twelfth chapter. No. Nothing can prepare you for what R. Kelly has created in the first twelve chapters of Trapped in the Closet.

Whether you take these stories seriously (as R. Kelly does), or as a monumental joke (as I do), they're definitely original and unforgettable. Masterfully mixing soap opera, musical comedy, R & B, farce, and even a little old school musical into one big pot of lip-synced sweetness, Trapped in the Closet will have you engrossed in the story, and laughing at every plot twist. I mean, there's a midget with asthma hiding in the pantry at one point.

The "behind the scenes" featurette offers insight into R. Kelly's creation. Behind the scenes he just keeps repeating how this is his masterpiece and it's going to change what people thing is "possible and impossible". In R. Kelly's mind, the future holds 20 more chapters and a Trapped in the Closet talk show. It's interesting to watch his child-like fascination with his own creation, but don't get caught up in his fanatacism, because Trapped in the Closet is a farcical masterpiece at best, not the work of genius he might make it out to be.

    Description

On December 31, 1931, lone trapper Albert Johnson (Charles Bronson) shot and killed a man in self-defense at his remote Yukon cabin. A few days later, hard-living lawman Sgt. Edgar Millen (Lee Marvin) reluctantly brought a heavily armed posse to arrest Johnson for murder. In the brutal siege that followed, Johnson would kill four more men before escaping into the frozen mountains. As a nation watched, Millen was forced to pursue Johnson by foot, dogsled and plane in a desperate chase that would take both men from the brink of survival to the very edge of vengeance.

Fifteen years after THE DIRTY DOZEN, Bronson and Marvin re-teamed for this explosive action hit directed by Peter Hunt (ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE, ASSASSINATION). Andrew Stevens, Carl Weathers and Angie Dickinson co-star in this real-life story of the fugitive called 'The Mad Trapper' and the manhunt that shocked the world. Based On The Incredible True Story Of'The Deadliest Manhunt In History'

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Plenty Of Action Packed Adventure.......2007-06-26

Death Hunt starring Lee Marvin and Charles Bronson is certainly one film that will never end up on the Lifetime channel. Director Peter R. Hunt and Scriptwriters Michael Grais and Mark Victor do a bang up job moving the standard western film formula to 1930's Canada. The Yukon backdrop is as much a part of this film as Monument Valley is to a John Ford Western. This film carries that uneasy feeling of trouble right from the get go. Granted it is based on a real incident, but doesn't follow the real historical line, and so what. Death Hunt is meant to be pure men's entertainment. Lee Marvin as Sgt. Millen of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, who has been in the backwater for too long, knows that he represents law an civilization to a group of folks who could care less. He is a pragmatist who knows just how much to let the locals get away with, as long as it keeps the lid on. Marvin is exquisite as the grizzled drunken professional, who in his own way, is running from civilization as much as any of the ignorant locals. I forsee a retrospective of the work of Charles Bronson definitely including the film Death Hunt. Bronson plays Albert Johnson who shows up in town, out of nowhere. A man tired of life, it seems, who just wants to be left alone. But, he is not a man, like most of the people in that town, who will ignore suffering, and that even applies to animals. This is where the trouble begins. The film contains a great supporting cast, Ed Lauter, as Hazel, the ignorant dogfighting trapper who thinks that he is the defacto king of this barbaric place. Andrew Stevens as the young, piss and vinegar, Mountie assigned to Millen's outpost is great. The film also boasts Carl Weathers as an ex-patiriot American black, who found a life in this part of Canada that was denied to him in the U.S. The film is a great chase. You find yourself routing for hunter and hunted alike. With Death Hunt you get great direction, great dialogue, great scenic locations, and wonderful acting. This all adds up to A plus entertainment. A great film. Buy the DVD!

There are two movies that come to mind, when I speak of this one,"Lonely are the Brave" and "Valdez is Coming". The same theme in all three of these excellent films, "the Law Hunts The Fugitive" The fugitive portrays the sympathytic hero in all three films. In all three, the persuer takes a liking to the one he hunts. They come to respect his courage and fortitude. This movie is full of twists, turns, thrills and spills, excitement, suspense, not to mention beautiful mountain scenery. Last but definetly not least, Lee Marvin and Charles Bronon, they alone are worth the price of admission. "Anonymously" Louie G.

This film is a masterpiece for action and adventure.Great scenery and an ending where all the good guys win,BRILLIANT.

    5 out of 5 stars Engrossing film!.......2007-02-07

Lee Marvin and Chuck Bronson are both top-flight actors, and their presence in this movie only makes an excellent 'chase' plot that much the better. This is one that can be watched when the desire to see a good action film hits again and again as it contains interesting nuances and issues that keep it from getting 'old.'

    4 out of 5 stars Vintage Bronson.......2007-01-12

I enjoyed this film, typical of the 1970s Bronson Genre - quietly spoken tough guy. Lee Marvin also plays a good role as the knock about arm of the law - who feels more sympathy for Bronson's character than his pursuers. Angie Dickenson plays a less likely widow that becomes attracted to the much older Marvin - a common thread in the 70's for some reason - a bit unrealistic but it doesn't detract from the overall story and suspense. Enjoyable action scenes and a fantastic snow covered environment make this a movie worth buying.

Just when you think it's getting silly, Cellular serves up another tantalizing twist. In the time-honored tradition of Sorry, Wrong Number and Wait Until Dark, Kim Basinger is well-cast as a resourceful damsel-in-distress who thwarts her kidnappers by connecting with a n'er-do-well cell-phone user (Chris Evans, later seen in The Fantastic Four) who races against time to rescue her from afar. One good cop (William H. Macy) assembles clues to uncover conspiracy, while first-time writer Chris Morgan and pulp-movie master Larry Cohen (who conceived the plot, similar to his own Phone Booth screenplay) serve up a consistently satisfying string of high-tension surprises. Jason Statham continues to prove his rising-star status as the film's tenacious villain, and director David Ellis (Final Destination 2) takes advantage of his experience as a veteran stunt coordinator and second-unit director, making good use of locations in his native Santa Monica, and wringing credible suspense from a deliriously far-fetched premise. --Jeff Shannon

    4 out of 5 stars A surprisingly good film.......2007-06-16

When Cellular first hit the theatres, it had all the marks of a B film, unknown male lead, fledging female Oscar winner, and talented odd-ball William H. Macy. However, when you watch this film, you realize that it doesn't deserve it's B class status. This is a really good action-suspense story with a viable and nearly realistic storyline. It doesn't even loses it entertainment value when you watch a second time. I do like that Kim Basinger isn't a helpless damsel in distress. She is an active participant in her and her family's rescue. Overall: This movie is worth your time.

2 out of 5 stars Plot interesting, several actors were awful.......2007-06-15

Kim Basinger isn't known for her acting chops, but she does a decent (for her) job in this movie. What amazed me was that Chris Evans was just as hammy and over-acted just like he did in Not Another Teen Movie. Did someone tell him this was supposed to be a comedy? His facial expressions were over the top, and he acted like such a drama queen.

    2 out of 5 stars B-grade movie!.......2007-06-15

I watched the movie on TV, and thought it was a wise decision not to have bought the DVD. This is a B-grade movie with a few twists here and there to make it appear like an A-grade thriller.

Premise: a whole bunch of crooked cops are captured on video committing murder, and they kidnap the family of the guy who caught them on tape. One lonesome guy on a cellphone outwits the gang of cops.

I could understand if the movie was made in the early 90's when cell phones were starting to become a part of daily life, but in 2004??...the director must've lost his marbles!

    Verdict: absolutely un-*&$king-believable!

    5 out of 5 stars Not a sleeper!.......2007-02-14

This is a fast paced movie from beginning to end. I think the only flaw was with the villains. I didn't find them "believable." So, either they were bad actors or badly directed. In contrast, Kim Basinger, William H. Macy, and Chris Evans were superb in their roles.

This was my first experience seeing Chris Evans in anything; that is, anything memorable for me to remember the actor. His athleticism, good looks, acting ability, and sense of humor were of five star caliber.

I felt that this was an excellent vehicle to show Kim Basinger's acting abilities beyond her roles in such popular movies as: "Batman," a James Bond thriller, and "9 and a 1/2 Weeks," etc. "Cellular" asked her to dig deep down inside herself, bringing out the true meaning of the word Actress. She was most believable.

William H. Macy once again proved there is no end to his talents. It was good to see him play a 'good guy,' unlike that which he played in "Fargo." He was excellent in his role as a radio announcer in "Seabiscuit." This time he needed to be more athletic as a cop. He did well at that, and left me with a feeling of comfort knowing he was on the job.

5 out of 5 stars watch on one breath.......2007-01-27

The whole premise of the movie, that Kim Basinger, as a kidnapped mom, manages to put together a broken phone and contact someone who is willing to risk all to help her is unbelievable. Yes. But so are so many 'Thrillers' of this genre. It's one of those 'only in America' movies.

The movie starts slowly, but hang in there, it gets better. By the end it I felt I had got my moneys worth. It is exciting, suspensful with the usual shoot outs, car chases and an unlikely hero who comes good.

I thought the best performance was put in by William Macey as the only straight cop on the force.
