Devo - The Complete Truth About De-Evolution

Starring:Devo, Mark Mothersbaugh
Studio: Rhino / Wea
Product Type: DVD
Editorial Review:

Punk/New Wave mad scientists Devo were among the few bands to understand the music video's potential as art form during its infancy in the eighties. Their brilliant and bizarre videos were compiled on VHS and then on laser disc; that long out-of-print disc, The Complete Truth About De-Evolution, has finally arrived on DVD, which should please longtime fans of this eclectic outfit. Rhino's DVD is essentially the same as the Pioneer disc, which featured 17 videos (including their radio hit, "Whip It") as well as the amusing and award-winning corporate film parody "The Truth About De-Evolution," and commentary by band members Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh. Live clips from the VHS releases are also included; the video for "Are You Experienced" unfortunately was nixed by the Jimi Hendrix estate, but its replacement--a rarely seen video for "Mongoloid" by experimental filmmaker Bruce Connor--makes up for its exclusion. Fans may wish that Rhino had remastered the live clips, but the fact that these fascinating videos are available at all (and at a low retail price) should convince fence-sitters of its must-have status. --Paul Gaita

Devo in Video.......2007-06-19
I was hoping for interviews and factoids-when in fact, it was all video. Most of which I had already seen. Kinda disappointed.
Commentary is only worthwhile feature of this DVD.......2006-09-30
I rented this DVD from Netflix and watched it. As a collection of videos, it's only so-so. Many other people have discussed the shortcomings, so I won't bother. The audio commentary by Mark and Gerald was worth the time spent watching the DVD, but even that was kind of bland, and little more than just, "OK, in this video we were conveying 'X" message." As a fan with not a whole lot of knowledge of the history and mythology of the band, it was interesting to me and worth watching, as I said. To a die-hard Devo fan, I could see how this would be an extremely disappointing disc.
THE REAL DEVO.......2006-08-16
The Complete Truth About Devolution was the third home video release by new wave band Devo. It is a collection of Devo's music videos from 1976 to 1990. It was released on Laserdisc in 1993, and on DVD by Rhino Records in 2003. The Complete Truth About Devolution contains almost all of Devo's music video output from 1976 to 1990, with the notable exception of the music video for the theme to Doctor Detroit. The films are presented in roughly chronological order, and are interspersed with clips from a promotional film Devo made with Pioneer to promote the Laserdisc format. It also includes many bonus features including a commentary track, an interview with Chuck Statler who directed many of Devo's videos, live footage from early Devo performances, galleries and more. It is important to differentiate The Complete Truth About Devolution from The Truth About De-Evolution. "The Truth About De-Evolution" was Devo's first music video comprising the videos for Jocko Homo and "Secret Agent Man". The Complete Truth About Devolution is the compilation of videos first released in 1993.

Fun and Freaky .......2006-04-19
I love the kitschy ways of Devo and how they were few of the original video artists of the 80s. I loved watching these videos despite the gritty quality of some of their earlier videos (which may actually have lended a hand to the authenticity of their raw performances). I'd definitely say it is work the price to keep DEVO eternally archived in one DVD!!
This ain't your parents' De-evolution.......2006-02-05
I must say, after reading previous reviews provided here, I almost did not buy the DVD. As a long time Devotee, I had a VHS tape of videos, "We're All Devo." Others noted how we are not getting much more than previous video collections, and even how a few videos were missing. They must've been speaking to a collection other than "We're All Devo," since "Are You Experienced?" was never on that VHS either. So, I must make the distinction for those that have only seen/owned the "We're All Devo" video collection. And since the previous reviews don't mention how the later videos (like "Disco Dancer," etc.) are now included, they must be speaking to another collection entirely. So, to be clear, I want to note that this is certainly nothing like the VHS collection "We're All Devo," if that was your only exposure. There is a lot on here that looks as though it was provided previously on Laserdisc (even some on-screen commands can still be seen). I cannot really speak to that, so perhaps that is what some are comparing it to. But I found the DVD well worth the money. I think that some reviewers even comment on the quality of the transfers. But after watching all the extras, and the videos with commentary, I felt compelled to rate it, and briefly comment. Over and above the videos, there is a lot more here that I would have paid money for. And the more I look at the other reviews, the more I feel I must make the distinction between the two. Ultimately, the written and audio commentary alone was worth it for me. And not on the sole merit of it being simply "extra." It is truly informational.

for the Devo fan, this is a wonderful 2fer, BUT it is Region 2/3/4/5 NTSC, and not Region 1 as listed. Amazon was unaware of this and just found out from their distributor that this (Australian) set is not Region 1. So, if you have a Region-free player (or work-arounds ;-), I HIGHLY recommend this set if you don't already have the individual discs. For those of you without the appropriate equipment, I guess you'll have to buy the separate releases.
