5 out of 5 stars This Blu-ray disc is a winner.......2007-07-03

Chris' own performances are top-notch, his guest musicians (such as Gladys Knight) are a knock-out, and the video and audio quality of this Blu-ray disc are stunning. The 24-bit PCM 5.1 audio track is absolutely reference-quality in every regard. Demo-material at its best, especially given the fantastic performance material.

1 out of 5 stars BLUE-RAY Technology.......2007-06-28

The one star is because I apparently do not have a Blue-Ray DVD Player. I selected the Blu-Star version of the DVD because it had more content. The description of the DVD did not indicate that you had to have a Blu-Ray DVD. I have seen the Cable version of this show and I rate it at 5 STARS.

Jazz trumpeter Chris Botti is mostly exquisite on this concert DVD, which gives old fans and new arrivals a chance to hear him apply his rich, expressive playing to a number of old standards, as well as one or two of his own compositions. Botti, along with a remarkable band including Billy Childs on piano and Billy Kilson on drums, plays six numbers as instrumentals but is joined on eight other performances by a few guests. Sans vocals, Botti warms up a delighted audience with a nice, if slightly exercised, take on "Someone to Watch Over Me," but proves magnificent on "When I Fall In Love" and especially Leonard Cohen's "A Thousand Kisses Deep." Then out glides old pal Sting (who invited Botti to join his own touring band some years ago), who has a nice go at "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?", followed by jazz-blues belter Jill Scott's terrific "Good Morning Heartache." Less effective are two appearances by Paula Cole, of which the second, "The Look of Love," doesn't work particularly well for anyone, including Botti and composer-pianist Burt Bacharach (also onstage). Renee Olstead sizzles up the joint with her kittenish "Pennies from Heaven," and Sting returns for a comic if touching "My Funny Valentine." --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Great collector's DVD........2007-06-08

I have a fairly large (approx. 4000+ items)jazz CD and vinyl collection. This is my first jazz DVD. My wife saw the Chris Botti - Live concert and convinced me to buy it. It is the first of my new collection of jazz DVDs.

5 out of 5 stars Re-playing the magic of a .......2007-04-06

After this magic night in L.A. with an all-star cast of guest vocalists, Chris Botti took the show on the road -- minus the great singers -- and on five consecutive nights stopped in as many Canadian cities, including this one. The all-instrumental show was, to my memory, even better (than this original show) because of the extended solos by Chris himself and his brilliant, accompanying musicians.

Botti told his Winnipeg audience that, when he toured with Sting, he was urged to "find yourself the best drummer in the world - and make him the heart of your band."

"So I Googled," he said, "for 'The baddest- *ss drummer in the world,' and up came the name Billy Kilson." Then Botti told us: "What you are about to see, you will not believe." He wasn't exaggerating. The drum solo (I forget the tune -- doesn't matter) was beyond any musical experience I've witnessed since Oscar Peterson last performed here 20 years ago.

I turned to the person next to me and said, "This is like watching a god." At one point Billy Kilson was performing with just one hand, multiple rhythms, with alternating shadings so subtle it sounded like he was using brushes, not sticks.

The entire band stood out in the front lobby of our "Burton Cummings Theatre" and signed autographs until every last patron had gone out into that good night. I wanted to talk to other members of this all star band, comprised of Grammy-winners, including pianist Billy Childs and guitarist Mark Whitfield. Instead, I went straight for Bill Kilson.

"Who are your heroes?" Billy thought about it a minute, (he has a modest, gentle demeanor) and said, "My teacher" (a lesser-known jazz drummer - but an influential artist whose name I can't recall six months later). When he'd mentioned just that one name, I asked: "Anyone else?"

"Max Roach," he said.

The solo Kilson performs on this DVD is impressive enough; but after seeing him 'in person' on a more extended solo, I would urge jazz fans to find a way to see Billy Kilson "live and in person," -- and be prepared to re-arrange your personal pantheon of greatest-ever drummers! Good to see that the Amazon.com editorial review (above) mentions his name and the word "remarkable" in the same sentence!

The "bonus track" on this DVD concert, also happened to be Chris Botti's lone 'encore' here in Winnipeg -- a gorgeous rendition of the Arlen/Mercer classic written for Frank Sinatra. The trumpeter told us: "I worked with Sinatra for two weeks at the start of my career -- when I was fresh out of college!" It was, he said, "the greatest musical experience of my life"

For the Winnipeg audience that gave him a standing ovation, his performance of "One for My Baby" -- ALONE -- was worth the price of admission!

5 out of 5 stars Chris Botti.......2007-03-23

Chris Botti is a master and this album is super. A great value with both the CD and DVD included.

5 out of 5 stars Chris Botti's Live CD/DVD.......2007-03-08

This is a great way to spend a quiet evening! Both the CD and watching the live performance were phenomenal. Chris is a very gifted artist and entertainer--he definitely has a way with the audience (and not bad looking either!!) I've had the chance to see him in concert....don't miss him if he comes your way!

High concept and high class, An American Classic is a worthy visual complement to Tony Bennett's 2006 duets CD of the same name. The notion of pairing veteran artists with a variety of singing partners is nothing new, of course (cf. B.B. King and Frank Sinatra, among many others), but this one goes a step further; under the direction of Rob Marshall (Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha) and his team, Bennett appears in what's described as a "docu-musical," faithfully re-creating a variety of performance settings much like the ones in which the 80-year-old singer has appeared in the course of his long, fruitful career. Thus we find him on a concert stage with Barbra Streisand ("Smile"), in a nightclub with John Legend (a swinging, uptempo "Sing, You Sinners"), in the studio with k.d. lang and trumpeter Chris Botti ("Because of You"), on a '60s-style TV variety show with Diana Krall (a classy "The Best is Yet to Come"), in Vegas with Elton John ("Rags To Riches") and then Michael Buble (an amusing "Just in Time"), and so forth, on up to Bennett's triumphant shot on MTV Unplugged with Christina Aguilera (no jazz singer, but she keeps most of her excesses in check on "Steppin' Out") and the inevitable "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" (Bennett with piano accompaniment only). It's all very respectful, well staged, and entertainingly choreographed, but if this 45-minute cavalcade has a significant shortcoming, it's that it mostly lacks fire and spontaneity; the only time Bennett cuts loose is during an audio-only "I Got Rhythm" heard under the various DVD menus. Viewers may also be disappointed that Sting, Bono, Paul McCartney, James Taylor, the Dixie Chicks, and several others on the CD do not appear here, and it's a notable drag that not a single one of the composers or arrangers of the material is identified. Bonus features include a "making of" documentary and other featurettes. --Sam Graham

Product Description:
TONY BENNETT: AN AMERICAN CLASSIC is a ground-breaking television event that takes us on a musical journey of this legendary entertainer's life. Re-creating the venues of Tony's career, from the downtown Greenwich Village club where Tony was discovered, to the Columbia recording studios of the early 60's, from rat pack Las Vegas to Carnegie Hall, Tony will be joined for each show-stopping number by the myriad of superstars that appear with him on his Duets album. In a bold re-invention of the form, each set piece was filmed as a small movie by an Academy Award-winning team, lead by director Rob Marshall (Memoirs Of A Geisha, Chicago.) Seamlessly woven throughout the program will be introductions and narrative insights. This event invites us to celebrate the life of who Frank Sinatra called "the greatest singer ever." As the special ends, Tony Bennett will take the empty stage, this time alone, and deliver his signature classic, "I Left My Heart In San Francisco."

5 out of 5 stars Great production, great choreography, great performances!.......2007-05-12

Before I purchased this item, I thought I would only enjoy a few tracks by my favorite artists. But, it kept me enthralled all through the playing time. Personally, I bought this one because I like Barbra Streisand. But, wow, all the duet performances are so great. I've watched it twice now (in only 2 weeks). And I think I'll still enjoy it some more times. I think this DVD can be played at your home parties for the enjoyment of your valued guests.

4 out of 5 stars Living Legend!.......2007-03-27

First, I give this four starts and not five only for the brevity of the program. But 40-odd minutes still offer many opportunities to appreciate what this 80 year-old can do! The creative program was directed by Rob Marshall and includes choreography (Tony even dances a bit) and visuals that live up to his Chicago accomplishments. Being something of a purist, I have to say I was initially skeptical of the "guest list." Each musician rises to the challenge, and the songs alternate between touching and flashy. Tony shines in each tune, an effect heightened by a full orchestra and elaborate sets. The film quality is excellent and vivid as is the sound recording. I found myself watching and re-watching sections over and over again -- you will, too. The extra features (including the "making of" documentary) are very interesting, too. This project was clearly a work of love for all involved. What a fine way to celebrate Tony's career.

4 out of 5 stars Great Buy.......2007-03-26

I had caught the tail end of this concert when it was on tv. I enjoyed what I saw and heard, and It was definately what I had expected. Very good singing by Toney B's guest and the incomperable Toney B was excellent as always!!!!!!!! He still has his pipes at 80!!!!! Totally blew me away!!!! The concert is more of a mock tv show. Though I did like this format, it lacked the enthusiasm of those old dean martin tv shows. The director should have had more interaction with Tony and his guest singers. It would have been fun to see him talking about jazz music, with the modern day crooner, Michael Buble , for instance. All in all this is a great dvd definately worth buying, with the performances with Christina Agulara and Michael Buble standing out!!!!

4 out of 5 stars cancel the CHEEZY dancers -you don't need em + won't miss em.......2007-03-20

I am giving four stars because I dont waste my time writing negative reviews- so a four star review means I have to diss something. My stomach was turning watching the cheezy and totally gross dance scenes- feathered fans and top hats and canes- PUHLEEZE !! None of these vocals are enhanced in any way buy these gyrating midriffs with the same old sorry meaningless cliched moves and the horrific non flattering outfits- they look like pole dancers in an atlantic city off the beaten path porn palace. Have I made my case?
Other than that the songs chosen were interesting, everyone does a masterful job singing - but I couldn't watch this tape again. These 2006 scenes just makes one all the more nostalgic for the neon lights of the old time dimly lit smoky jazz clubs when musical craft was king- I bet tony wishes that this style was still reigning as well

5 out of 5 stars Excelente Concierto de Tony Bennett.......2007-02-08

5 out of 5 stars A "must" for people who like Sting.......2007-03-19

This is a great DVD. The first of the DVD shows great musicians coming together to put on an intimate concert at Sting's home. They show lots of interaction between the musicians. Kind of a behind the scenes on preparing for a concert. The rest of the DVD is the concert, but there is a twist. You really must view the DVD for the twist. It will really become a historic DVD to own.

5 out of 5 stars a somber event.......2006-09-12

Having just marked the 5 year anniversary of September 11th, 2001, this concert still encases the emotion of that day perfectly. Recorded in Sting's backyard in Italy, it's a concert that almost didn't take place. Recorded on that fateful day in 2001, Sting nearly called it off. Wisely, it's my feeling, Sting and his band chose to go on with the show. Nothing can bring people together in times of sorrow better than music. Memories of that day still haunt us all, but this simple event in the backyard of Sting's villa proves that even on that day, there were people who believed in a better world. We, as human beings, share our grief and our joy. Regardless of what color your skin is or which country you hail from, that day taught us all the meaning of love and companionship. And Sting simply put a beat to it, gave us a soundtrack to explore our emotions. A somber event to be sure, but it's not without joy. For underneath all the pain of that day, there's a glimmer of hope.

5 out of 5 stars STING AT HIS FINEST.......2006-04-10

Having been both a Police and Sting fan I was expecting something totally different.
This concert was performed on 9/11/01. The arrangements were intentionally changed to reflect the events of that tragic day. The DVD starts out with Fragile whereby Sting
sets the tone for the entire DVD. At the end he rocks out saying that we will not give
in, not give up or change our lives due to what has happened. We will enjoy life and be happy. Each song is a classic. You will leave with a warm feeling in your heart, knowing that the sun will rise tomorrow. Both the sound, visual, recording mix, and choice of songs is outstanding. The settting is perfect. The camera angles and the mix is breaktaking. If you are going to purchaase a Sting DVD this is the one.

5 out of 5 stars Bought it for Chris Botti, but thoroughly love it for everyone!.......2006-03-15

I have always enjoyed Sting's music, but had never considered purchasing a DVD of Sting's until I learned that Chris Botti was also on it. I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it! Most of the DVD is a build up to the concert that happened on September 11, 2001 on a stage built at Sting's house. It shows all of the behind-the-scenes preparation leading up to such a large-scale event, from rehearsals and sound checks to candid fun amongst the musicians. The concert itself is wonderful and intimate, as the band performs before a small audience on that fateful day. The pre-performance events do not at all fell "staged" or scripted, giving the DVD a personal quality. Sound and images are great! I would highly recommend this to any Sting or Chris Botti fan!

5 out of 5 stars great service.......2006-02-25

5 out of 5 stars Good Feelings!.......2006-08-25

It was lovely to finally have a music DVD that presented great performances, the smooth transition from one great sound to the next sound was seamless. This was one of the best DVD that I have purchased in a long time. This was so good that it was a shame that it is only 55 minutes in length, I would have gladly spent hours with this release. More music DVDs need to be made like this and in so doing it would stop that disappointed feeling that far to many music DVDs leave you with. It is like some meals the presentation is great but after the meal you still have an appetite for more and this DVD did that for me it left me wanting more!

Very Pleased!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-05-05

I caught a few episodes of "Legends of Jazz" before buying this, so I knew I would like it. Some of this has not been shown yet by PBS in my area, so I didn't know if the ones I hadn't caught yet were going to be as good as the earlier ones. Well, it turns out that the remainder of them lived up to my expectations. I really like the Kurt Elling and Al Jarreau version of the classic "Take Five" and the Robert Cray and Keb Mo collaboration on "The 12 Year Old Boy". The only thing I'm disappointed about is that there is no Roy Hargrove on here. Hargrove is my favorite living trumpet player and I really enjoyed his playing on the first episode. Oh well, you can't win 'em all.

5 out of 5 stars Get this if you missed the PBS series.......2006-04-27

I found out about this 2-disk set while watching the "Male Vocalists" episode of the new PBS television series "Legends of Jazz," and after buying it, I find I am really looking forward to seeing all the rest of the actual half-hour TV shows from which these 13 tracks and clips are taken. As for this set, let me say first that the audio and video quality are simply outstanding, among the best I have ever heard, in fact, (which is not surprising considering that the TV series is shot in HDTV and features really outstanding Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound.) Next, as for the performances themselves, they really shine and there is something here for everyone - the set covers everything from latin jazz to be-bop, Brazilian jazz, fusion-type jazz, vocal jazz, and even throws in a bit of the blues, with a great duet by Robert Cray and Keb' Mo'. A really nice mix of artists, older and younger, and a pretty good value for money, considering that you get both a CD and a DVD packaged together in the box. I highly recommend this!

5 out of 5 stars Legends of Jazz - Excellent/A Classic/A Must Have.......2006-04-26

This is a fantastic collection of live performances on both DC and DVD! From the Al Jarreau/Kurt Elling vocal duet version of Brubeck's "Take Five" to David Sanborn and Phil Woods blowing down the house on the classic "Senor Blues", there is not a single bad track in this package. I also loved the solo performances - Chick Corea's mind-blowing display of technique on "Armando's Rhumba" is a particular standout, as is Benny Golson's "Killer Joe" (the track Spielberg used in the Tom Hanks film, "The Terminal".) This would be a good deal just for the audio CD, but the included video versions of the performances on the accompanying DVD are a welcome extra - they're shot beautifully and the Dolby 5.1 Surround really makes you feel as if you are there at the TV taping... For me, though, the best part is that the artist combinations are really well thought-out, and give you the chance to hear some incredible jazz musicians performing together whom you would ordinarily never see on the same stage.

5 out of 5 stars Botti Fan.......2007-04-11

Watching Chris Botti perform is as great as just listening to him play. He is one cool Dude! He is sooo gifted to be able to play his horn as beautifully as he does. He and his trumpet are almost one entity! You have to love that jazz and show biz and he gives his all to you. Sigh! Jo Ann J.

5 out of 5 stars Adult music, for the ones that apreciate good music.......2007-03-14

Now after seeing Chris Botti in Concert this past December in Houston, I can apreciate even more his work.
An honest, fine muscian, with a trumpet style, unique and modern...soft and precise...that will never hurt even the most sensitive listener.
The concert it self is very Jazzy, not fancy, but awesome, for people who enjoy a good piece of music. The picture quality is not the best, but I think that fits the ambiance of the concert, at a dark, smoky jazz bar...cool and groovy.
Sting, Shawn Colvin and Jason Rebello as guest musicians are just awesome, each one in their own style.
For every jazz fan, this is a well worth piece to have and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Musician.......2007-02-25

I am myself a trumpet player... and yet, must confess that i bought this DVD primarily because i knew that Sting performed as a guest on a couple of tunes. That being said, i was greatly impressed by Botti's style and musicianship throughout the performance. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Good. Look new. .......2007-02-02

Good delivery and promtpt service. I would use this vendor again.

Description

December 2005. Los Angeles, California. Trumpeter Chris Botti, on the heels of his break-through gold certified album "When I Fall In Love," and the record-breaking follow-up, "To Love Again," plays two triumphant shows at the Wilshire Theatre backed by a full orchestra and his virtuosic band. Playing repertoire mostly culled from these two hit albums, Chris is joined onstage by some of the world's most accomplished singers and musicians (in order of appearance): Sting, Jill Scott, Paula Cole, Burt Bacharach, Renee Olstead, Paul Buchanan, and Gladys Knight. The show is filmed for the PBS special, "Chris Botti Live with orchestra & special guests…and this DVD.

"A passionate evening of instrumental storytelling…it was apparent from the first notes Chris Botti played at the Wilshire Theatre on Friday, that the sold-out house was in for a special evening." -Don Heckman, Los Angeles Times

I have a fairly large (approx. 4000+ items)jazz CD and vinyl collection. This is my first jazz DVD. My wife saw the Chris Botti - Live concert and convinced me to buy it. It is the first of my new collection of jazz DVDs.
