INSIDE GENESIS THE GABRIEL YEARS 1970-1975 A CRITICAL REVIEW (GENESIS)
Customer Reviews:
Annoyingly short concert clips and talking heads.......2007-05-28
As many other reviewers have commented, this is just a series of annoying folks telling you their opinion about old Genesis albums. They show very short clips (usually 20 to 30 seconds) but never entire songs. This is almost certainly because they don't own the copyright to these films, but short snippets followed by commentary counts as "fair use" and is therefore legal! If you have access to bootleg videos you can find longer versions of the actual footage. If not, I would still recommend that you skip this DVD and get "Total Rock Review (Dts)" instead, since that's a very similar product to this one but at least it has the entire 30-minute 1972 Belgian TV appearance uncut as a bonus feature.
A real steal.......2007-04-10
Don't buy this DVD, you'll see some unknown expert telling you their opinion about early Genesis album. Some very short footage out of sync.
You will have about 15 minutes on Tresspass, and 6 minutes on "Selling England by the pound", not a single word on "Firth of fifth" or "The cinema show" and 3 minutes on "The lamb lies down on Broadway"
Very bad product and it is a bad idea to see this crap on Amazon.
read the below review.......2006-10-10
There's nothing I can say that wasn't said in the first posted review, but I would like to add one or two things. I was particularly annoyed when one of the "critics" actually analyzed Supper's Ready by playing the opening piano line. I KNOW HOW THE SONG GOES! I paid to see GENESIS play it, not some arrogant critic who thinks I care more about his opinion than watching supposedly unreleased Genesis footage. I felt particularly teased by the snippet shown from The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, because I think a live video from that tour would be worth it's own video release.
Not disappointing.......2006-05-16
The Short:
This is a 'critical' review of the Peter Gabriel-era Genesis, from Trespass (1970) through The Lamb Lays Down On Broadway (1975). The disc features rare snippets of live footage from 1972 - 1975 with brief commentary and critique on the song, context in the album, and the era.
The Long:
Critics: I am not familiar with any of these critics, who are either columnists, producers, or musicians, but they sometimes disagree on their opinions (which is nice), and offer context of the featured track in terms of the era and the whole of the Genesis career.
The Band: There does not appear to be any band or Genesis management involvement on this disc. There are no interviews offered by any members of the band, nor of any recognized band or label representatives.
Footage: I've never seen much of this footage and the quality is not bad. The average length of each footage varies from 10 to up to 30 seconds. About half of the very early footage is slightly out of sync, i.e. the music is about half a beat to a beat faster than the footage. Each snippet has copyright text on the upper left quarter of the screen and was somewhat distracting at times.
Sound: Overall, excellent.
The Review:
I found this disc very informative, at least in terms of offering third-party perspectives on each track and the history of Genesis. Having been a fan since Invisible Touch and never seeing the Gabriel-Hackett live performances , this is a bit of a treat. The critics' also provide some historical context in terms of the music scene in Britain during that time and helps to give some understanding of how Genesis came to be recognized and gained fans.
Major annoyances are the aforementioned out of sync footage and the copyright text, as well as the absence of any band interviews. Also, The Lamb is given short shift with a very cursory, if not dismissive, review and only 10 seconds of one track.
Overall, this is not a bad critical disc and, if appropriately priced, is worth having in a Genesis library, if only to reflect on the musical talents highlighted by the critics, or for the performance snippets offered. The best companion to this, and the "Collins-era" disc, is the official Genesis DVD: The Genesis Songbook, to get the band members' outlook as well as more video snippets.
Grade: B- [would have been a "B" if they gave The Lamb more than 10-15 seconds of time]
Genesis Reunion....one can dream.......2006-02-02
This is an outstanding review of one of best theatrical bands ever....
Only one hour long, yet captures the essence of a great band in it's prime....
Enjoy.....
