The title is Travel the World with Putumayo, and they're not kidding. The fine folks at Putumayo traveled far and wide to put together this compilation of world-music videos, the first in a proposed series. A couple of the nations represented include Congo, via Los Angeles-based Ricardo Lemvo's "Mamba Yo Yo" (filmed in his beloved Cuba), and Brazil, via local favorite Chico César with the award-winning "Mama Africa." And when is the last time you heard anything from Guinea-Bissau? (Flamenco-influenced singer-songwriter Bidinte does the honors.) Highlights include the Gotan Project's black-and-white tango fantasia for "Santa Maria (Del Buen Ayre)" and Hisham Abbas' Bollywood-flavored "Nari Nari." The DVD also features clips of Oliver Mtukudzi and Habib Koité live in concert, along with short, but informative biographies of each artist. And, unlike the experiencing of listening to this music on CD, all the videos are subtitled (even the liner notes are in several languages). --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars Travel with Putumayo is fun!.......2006-03-13

I bought this DVD to share with my 4th and 5th grade music classes. It was a great way to introduce multicultural music by using authentic sights and sounds. The students loved the DVD and it helped open their eyes to world music. I loved the music and cultures that were explored. My only dislike was a section involving war-torn areas and the use of guns. I did not like having to explain guns and war during music curriculum. I later just skipped over this part of the DVD.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2004-06-08

I LOVE this DVD! After so many years of listening to Putumayo recordings, it's great to get to see the performers in action, mostly in their local settings. (10 of the 12 videos are songs found on albums.) In fact, the DVD doubles as a mini-travelogue in this sense, though cut in an MTV style. Czech gypsy singer Vera Bila's video transports us to a rustic Eastern European Gypsy village. We visit Havana, Cuba in Ricardo Lemvo's Afro-Latin hit "Mambo Yo Yo." Several feature intimate and loving views of African landscapes.

My favorite is Brazilian Chico C?sar with the award-winning "Mama Africa." The video begins with a shot of his parents telling the camera what a good boy he was as a child...it looked like a scene from one of my own childhood home movies! Which I think is the gift of this DVD...it connects us.

By the way, for those who might wonder if this is one of those sappy "we are all friends" kind of things that only appeals to parents and kids below the age of 6...wonder no more. The music is exciting, the visuals arresting, and it's sure to appeal to any age.

5 out of 5 stars Older Kids love this one.......2004-05-26

I had the pleasure of viewing a preview copy of this DVD recently. My sons (ages 17 and 13) absolutely love this video! It's a great way to help teens move out of their top 40 milieu into the wider world of music. Hip & cool - very intriguing visuals. Highly recommended family viewing.
