4 out of 5 stars A great buy for a Doors Fan.......2006-01-10

I bought this DVD today and popped it into my player as soon as I got home. After hearing the first few seconds of the song I thought damn this is going to be another compilation of songs from diff concerts. I was wrong and it's a full yet short show. At first I thought man sound quality is horrible, but I got use to it. I thought to myself the quiality is exceptionale. The document footage of Presidents and riots are intresting, but the only flaw is that the footage cuts in and you miss parts of a song. If your'e a true Doors fan you could over look these flaws. All I have left to say is get the orig 6 albums, In Concert and The Doors Collection DVD and you'll be set till Bright Midnight releases another Doors concert or live DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely a must purchase for any Doors fan.......2005-08-21

Yeah, I know, the sound quality is muddled, and the interspliced documentary footage can get in the way, but to me, these flaws pale in comparison to the incredible performance. For live concert footage, I haven't seen anything else that captures the intensity of The Doors when they were ON like this documentary does!! The band is just great in this concert...Morrison is mesmerizing, Manzarek's organ is haunting, Densmore's chops are blistering, and the true unsung hero of the day just might be Robbie Krieger on guitar.(the flamenco intro to Spanish Caravan is stunning)!!

If you are a fan of The Doors, this has to be in your collection. I've never seen anything that captures the true spirit of the group like this show. THIS is what The Doors were capable of when all the components were right...throbbing, intense, acid soaked theatrical rock at it's best!!

3 out of 5 stars Not a bad documentary..........2005-03-18

a good chronical (sp) of the Doors in London, England. And a good doc about the acid rock scene in the UK (Doors and the Jefferson Airplane co-headlined through the UK). Problem was, Jim Morrison was not dead yet.

Yes, I used to idolise this guy, and then I grew up. Jim Morrison would have been remotely interesting if he wasnt so drunk. Singers are suppose to sing IN KEY AND IN TIME. Morrison does neither. A good frontman interacts with the audience, not stare blankly into the darkness. Thank goodness for Robbie Krieger, Ray Manzarek and John Densmore for being able to carry the songs through when Morrison was too distracted, too wasted, or too disinterested to sing (yes, you get it all in this DVD).

If youre a fan, this is for you. If you want to know about the Doors, buy a studio album and read a bio. Dont waste your time and $$$ on a video.

4 out of 5 stars A Special, Not a Concert.......2004-07-12

Previous reviewers haven't made the point that isn't exact a concert film but a British television special, which means an overly creative director often interrupts a song to show period footage of riots, fighting in Vietnam, etc. Sometimes this is effective, sometimes annoying, but it does provide a historical setting perhaps useful to younger Doors fans. And the picture/sound quality isn't as bad as some reviewers indicate; this is like watching TV back in the 1960s, no better, no worse. The Doors play well, the newsreel stuff provides a context for this political band, and I don't regret buying this at all.

4 out of 5 stars Exceptional Performance by The Doors!.......2004-02-10

I agree with the first two reviews. The performance is exceptional and represents the whole band at their absoulute best. Stand out tracks are a brilliant Spanish Caravan and outstanding When The Music's Over. Pity the sound quality which merits a star deduction but all the instruments are perfectly discernable and cranked up loud enough it sounds good to my ears. Its not DVD modern quality but look folks it was recorded using Granada TV's technology at that time which was 2 track mono. Not much can be done about that even if it was well recorded which I believe it was considering the equipment used. Jim Morrison shines in this performance which is his best of any of the taped performances I have seen. The concert is far better than the Hollywood Bowl show which has vastly better sound and color to it but is only an average performance. The Roundhouse show also is better than the PBS performance featured on the Soft Parade which is a good performance but features a rather worn out and shaggy Jim Morrison. This DVD feautures the Doors at their best folks and is only bettered by the 2CD set "In Concert" which was a compilation of a variety of performances but is a fantastic overall live set of the Doors produced by the late Paul Rothchild. Get this DVD the original 6 albums, the in concert 2 cd set and the Doors Collection DVD and you will have the ultimate Doors Collection.

Description

Sex, death, reptiles, charisma and a unique variant of the electric blues gave the Doors an aura of profundity that has survived the band's demise. In September, 1968, The Doors gave a history making performance at The Roundhouse in London's Chalk Farm. They gave powerful renditions of their best songs including: "Light My Fire", "When The Music's Over", "Five To One", "Hello, I Love You", "Back Door Man", "Unknown Soldier", and "Spanish Caravan". Part of the Pioneer Artist Concert Film Series.

4 out of 5 stars can you say this is not good?.......2006-06-04

all i can say is that is is the doors live, this is the way they appeard during this performance, the sound quality may not be as good as expected, but i still think it captures the moment of the doors, i recently bought the CD of the Doors called Live In Hollywood and that was exceptional sound and for me and exceptional experience, i love the doors and anything live from them is a different experience, depending on how much you relate to the doors. as far as i know i would realy like to experience anything from the live or not, just to enrich my mind and maybe make me feel a little diffrent in the expectations of what i expect from a band a great as they are.

5 out of 5 stars Excelent.......2004-02-06

Jim Morrison, real rock star. In stage he is like a Guru with too many people following him. Watch It.

2 out of 5 stars Very disappointed.......2003-07-06

As a huge Jim Morrison fan, I was so excited about purchasing this DVD. Unfortunately, the sound was awful (low grade) and the news footage took away from the music. I was hoping for more interviews, and clips of Jim and the boys, but they're weren't many. I wouldn't have wasted my money if I had known.

5 out of 5 stars morrison's theatrical magic in full force.......2001-11-26

this is the best doors concert on tape, no doubt about it. morrison screams violently, wails in agony, gyrates, dances shamanistically, and after watching this performance one can hardly deny that he was probably the most memorable and ingenious frontman that pop culture has ever seen. his haunting lyrics are given raw life in this unforgettable show that clearly displays why, despite all his grievous flaws and insane self destructiveness, jim morrison was a legend and a creative giant. "when the music's over" is the first song they play and you can tell right from the first piercing shout that morrison is baring his soul with all it's intense anguish and poetic sensitivity. the idea that morrison was possessed becomes much less fantastic and unbelievable after seeing this one. an absolute must.

3 out of 5 stars all in all, it's ok.......2001-06-19

Well, i love the Doors and unfortunatly i havn't seen a whole lot of visual footage of them doing their thing, so i bought this dvd. I have to say that visually, the impression i had of the Doors was based on the Oliver Stone movie. After watching this dvd i realized that the Olvier Stone movie was the worst thing that could happen to the Doors. The Doors it seems, were nothing like the way they were depicted in that movie. So this dvd succeeds on the visual history/real personality front. The interview footage is short but revealing. However, musically, this dvd leaves much to be desired. The sound isn't terrible, but it's not great. The instruments are somewhat muddled together, it's a two-track recording. 4 instruments, but only two tracks...how good could that sound? Also, the "director" really screws the best song up. "When the Music's Over" is the main reason i bought this dvd being as how i've never heard it live, much less seen concert footage of it. Turns out the "director" tried to get "artsy" with someone elses art; he cuts the song in a few points, one of them being the most climatic, taking a great deal of energy AWAY from the song. "Spanish Caravan", on the other hand, is a real treat. Then again, "Hello, I Love You" is just a rehearsal/soundcheck without Jim.
