Instead of reviewing the content, my review is based more on the DVD Presentation.

Pros: The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack is just excellent, with great separation of instrument up front and in back and the great use of surrounds for more that just audience cheering. Sound is only second to the Shakira Unplugged Dvd.

Cons: Who ever mastered this DVD must be living in 1997. This concert was recorded in HD and is usually shown on MTV HD network. The big mistake being that the concert is not Anamorphic(Enhanced for 16x9 Televisions). Sure the majority will not care, but for those of you who own HD monitors, you will see the negative in losing that extra resolution and the fact that you have to manually zoom in.

Second negative being that if you want to start the concert from a specific song, you have to start the concert from the beginning and skip ahead. Because if you try to start from the "Song Selection" menu, it will take you back to the menu every time the song you selected ends.

Overall a great concert, but a disappointing DVD presentation.

Ricky's new DVD would be enjoyable for any listener no matter what language he or she speaks. I was disappointed only because the DVD is advertised as haing subtitles and the don't appear.(I ordered 2 DVD's to see if I could get the second one to work). As an English-speaking devotee or Ricky's earlier songs, I was looking forward to learning what he is saying on "Vuelve" since those CDs didn't come with translations.

There's something more poignant and beautiful when he sings in Spanish. I was not disappointed. It is truly awesome. Here he shows that his undeniable beauty is not just on the outside, but comes from within.

This Brilliant Star, from Barranquilla, Colombia, Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, is "unplugged" in the MTV Unplugged -- a format which showcases the artist in a minimalist environment away from a "las vegas diva" or "latin/hip-hop" environment, Orginally taped in 1999, pre-"Blonding", "Laundry Service", or "Hips", few may have suggested the artist simply known as "Shakira" would need to be "unplugged" (in 2007 climate of "Hips Don't Lie," or "Wherever, Whenever" perhaps unplugging would be in order).

This concert given to an MTV audience is simply sensational!! The enormous strength of Ms. Mabarek's voice combined with a "Grateful Dead"-like jam session, gives real pause to the "Shakira" we are being fed by the Hollywood "diva machine". The harmonica in ¿Dónde Están Los Ladrones?, makes her legit; "Ojos Así" puts her on the same plane as Sting's "Desert Rose".

Shakira is a remarkable, talented, gifted Artist, who is fabulous in this mtv unplugged concert. The only small regret is "Estoy Aqui", which is 're-vamped' to favor the then popular Alanis Morissette. "Estoy Aqui", an early hit for Shakira, is a true, sincere, beautiful ballad. The unplugged version is robotic, forgettable and slightly annoying.

You will enjoy this DVD. I highly recommend buying; and let's hope for more of the "unplugged Shakira" in the future. If "La Pared" is any indication, I look forward to more fine music from this brillant artist.

best recorded live music ever, done by cinematographers who almost know what they are doing.

some of her best early period songs (missing some of my personal favorites off her still-to-be-defeated first album, with her original collaborator on stage. Okay, a little too much of the contemporary folk-rock influence (Alanis MOrrisette?) but Shakira really overcomes her own material and puts it out. Estoy Aqui!

How in the world can that dopey sourdough bread Mariah Carey now out-do her? Must be a sign of the times. Must be not enough people understand SPanish, and Shakira's English tunes somehow fell flat, just a bit removed from her sincere and heartfelt delivery, underneath her ENglish clothes.

This is a very well recorded DVD that demonstrates the greatness of Alice in Chains. I watched it on a Naim system running totem speakers and was very impressed with the performance as well as the recording. My fav. song would be sludge factory. But I was very surprised that they stopped on the first take! I would recommend this DVD to anyone, but must warn that the music is quite dark at times.

what to say about AIC unplugged? just awesome! so glad they got this performance on film. prob the greatest unplugged ever. layne can still belt it out, even though he was obviously on the downside from his addiction. sad watching him just sit in a chair on stage, barely mobile. but when he opened his mouth, ahhh, that voice... just amazing! a definate must have! i had it on cd for yrs, but seeing it is a whole other level... just a great performance!

This DVD was better than the 1st one that I purchased [Diary of Alicia Keys-Documentary, this was a real waste of my money], she is at least singing in this one! The product is not MTV material, it lacks a certain something, I felt that there was something missing in watching this DVD. It could be my fault because I was expecting the DVD to match the quality of her music.

Why can she not make a home version of a DVD that are played on MTV, they look and feel so much better than this DVD was. Unless I have a guest over who likes her, I will achieve the DVD because it is not worth watching again.

One day I hope to purchase a DVD from her that has that certain something where the DVD is really unplugged!

Definitive Pure Artist Experience........2006-04-01

One of the most phenomenal DVDs in recent memory, "Alicia Keys: Unplugged" is one of the first MTV Unplugged DVDs released since Lauryn Hill's performance dating back to 2002. This DVD has proved to be the consummate entertainment experience. With a wide variety of music displayed in the contents of this video, which include Smooth Jazz, Pop, Funk, R&B, Blues, and Reggae, the genius of Alicia Keys & her band led by keyboardist/producer/musical director Onree Gill literally drive the audience into the past, present and the future of what true musicianship is all about. Every song is conveyed with strong skills and a sensational spirit. There is nothing but sheer quality seeping through this masterpiece! The album starts with an a capella prayer sung by Alicia which covers the traditional gospel pieces "Father, I Stretch My Hands..." & "Remember Me." As soon as the prayer posts, the band punctuated by a powerfully charged orchestra and strings team arranged by the great Ray Chew alongside resolute horn arrangements by Chops lend their staggering musical energy to the hit song, "Karma." One thing that's clearly understated with Alicia Keys is the fact that she is selfless, is always eager to get the crowd involved and offers the other performers an opportunity to access their creative intensity. Such is the case when background vocalist Jermaine Paul sings on "Heartburn" and harmonizes with Alicia on "If I Ain't Got You." Anaysha Figueroa, who sings background for Kirk Franklin, Sara Devine and Denise Stoudmire all blend their vocal talents in background and ad libs. Alicia has also really blossomed in her performance. Vocally, she digs deeper with more soul and vigor. She has so much fun with "Heartburn," "Unbreakable," and literally riffs like crazy on "How Come You Don't Call Me" [giving Prince a run for his money] and "A Woman's Worth," which slickly and gracefully covers the Isley Brothers' "Footsteps in the Dark." Other exclusive performances include, "Diary," [no need to explain that song lol!] "Every Little Bit Hurts," a reference to Nasir "Nas" Jones' classic from "Illmatic," "NY State of Mind" in her original poem "Streets of New York," (a.k.a. "City Life") which has a staggering jazz arrangement coupled with strong vocals that put you in the mindframe of Stevie Wonder's "Living for the City." "Stolen Moments" is one of my favorite songs as well as the fusion of Hip-Hop, Soul, & Reggae in the medley, "Love It or Leave It Alone/Welcome to Jamrock" featuring Common, Mos Def, Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley & Alicia's MBK team. Maroon 5's Adam Levine makes a surprise appearance with his acoustic guitar and amazing falsetto on "Wild Horses." This performance is a gem that has more than lived up to its hype and publicity. Another superb live performance in a career filled with them, MTV Unplugged: Bruce Springsteen in Concert (Plugged) finds the Boss at an interesting point in his life, musically and otherwise. Working without the E Street Band (except keyboardist Roy Bittan) for the time being, having divorced one wife and married another (singer and bandmate Patty Scialfa), Springsteen had released Human Touch and Lucky Town, two "solo" records, about eight months before this November 1992 MTV appearance. Selections from those two underrated albums account for over half of this 114-minute set's 19 songs (including three that weren't part of the original broadcast), and while Bruce is still Bruce ("Human Touch," for instance, is a classic Springsteen song), some changes are definitely apparent. He has always been an impassioned performer, but he seems genuinely energized by the presence of Scialfa (can "Red-Headed Woman" be about anyone but her?) and his young new band, including guitarist Shane Fontayne, drummer Zachary Alford, and no less than five backup singers. These folks rock their butts off, basically, especially on a wild, extended version of "Light of Day"; there's even some experimentation happening, like the various sound effects added to "57 Channels (and Nothin' On)." OK, so there's no "Born in the U.S.A." or "Born to Run"; as far as standards go, you'll have to be satisfied with "Atlantic City," "Glory Days," and an acoustic "Thunder Road" (Live in New York City, another superb DVD, is heavier on the hits). Anyway you slice it, Plugged is another welcome addition to the Springsteen catalog. --Sam Graham

This Springsteen concert film makes me very happy, causes some weeping, in fact it is a religious experience all around. He evokes at times the spirit of a religious revival. In particular, I like the "Meet me tonight in Atlantic City" lyrics and music, about unions and fighting for rights. I also like the "Fifty seven channels and nothing's on" theme that goes through more than one song. The Boss Lives!!!

bad James Brown imitation.......2005-10-31

I bought and saw this after seeing the Barcelona and NYC concerts, both which I love. The MTV show is a let down. The band looks skanky, like a bunch of heroin addicts. They gyrate and jump around but look silly, especially in one of the more poingnant songs where two of them are jumping around swinging tambourines like they're trying to kill mosquitoes. The E St band members, Clarence Clemmons, Steve Van Zandt, Nils Larfen (sp?), and Max Weinberg all have charisma, and could front their own bands and carry a show, but they complement the Boss. The band members in the MTV show have zero charisma. Maybe the Boss was trying for a James Brown feel, with a lot of musicians and backup singers on stage, but Brown's band always wears matching, dress clothes, and they don't divert attention from Brown.

Can't Compete With an E-Street Show...Or the Other Boss DVDs.......2005-02-05

Saying anything from The Man, Bruce Springsteen, is disapointing automaticly implies "disapointing" is a relative term. What is a dispointing effort from the Boss would generaly be the apex of many-a-lesser artists' careers. Also, Bruce usually has enough high points on even his lesser performances to elevate it above disapointing, no matter what the low points. While "Plugged" is no exception, it is still ultimately a disapointment.

Yes, most of the problem here is the fact that it is, at best, odd watching Bruce try to summon up his legendary energy with a different, lesser band; at worst it feels downright wrong.

Seeing Springsteen along side any other band would, and does, feel somewhat blasphimus, but along side this band, which includes a long-haired guitarist who looks like a Guns N' Roses reject and a lame chorus of doo-wop back-up vocalists, the whole thing feels more like a sin.

I understand artists wants to grow and try new things with new performers, but Springsteen's concerts and albums at this time were not indicative of someone growing. They were a step backwards - or at least in the wrong direction. It may not all be because the E-Street Band was absent, Bruce may have suffered this relative career lull with or without them at his side, but when you look at what was different at the time, what else can one place the blame on?

Now, BEFORE SOMEONE WRITES A REVIEW TRASHING THIS ONE AS NARROW-MINDED - DON'T GET ME WRONG! - keep in mind, when I say "wrong direction," the phrase, again, is relative. Maybe a better way to put it is 'vearing off the path for a moment.' I still have a lot of fondness for many songs from "Human Touch" and "Lucky Town" - I love "Human Touch," "Better Days," "Leap Of Faith," "Big Muddy," and "Lucky Town" - and this DVD has pleasurable moments to be sure ("Red Headed Woman" is a kick and it is the only place you can hear live cuts from the aformentioned albums, including the aformentioned songs), but neither of those albums, or this DVD, can rival anything including the E-Street Band.

This band is not bad. They seem quite good. But they don't fit. Maybe its because we are used to, and want to, see Bruce with E-Street - I'm sure that's a big part of it - but a big part is also the fact that Springsteen just doesn't look like he belongs with them no matter who he has played with before. They look as if they are from two different musical eras (Like seeing Bob Dylan on stage with Outkast - I hope I dind't just give anyone any crazy ideas because I see record execs constantly trying crazy sh*t like this ). They don't look alike, they don't play alike and worst of all, they don't seem comfortable with one another. All the effortless comradere of the E-Street Band is completely missing here and classic, genuine moments with E-Street - like three band members gathering around one mic - couldn't feel more forced and out of place here.

The Unplugged, sorry, "Plugged," setting is also a problem. Bruce is confined to a small stage, working a small room. Never a problem for him at an acoustic show, in fact, some of his sitdown performances with just a guitar or a piano rank with some of his best, but this is a plugged show in an unplugged setting. He can't realy cut loose, but he knows he's suposed to, so we get a Bruce-lite performance; an imitation of the real thing. Again, the effortless energy of other performances is lost in translation and everything else feels forced or tired. What book ends the concert, an acoustic "Red Headed Woman" for an opener and an acoustic "Thunder Road," are the best moments; and go figure since it is just Bruce with a guitar and the audience - the acoustic show that it feels like the whole show should be.

And lastly, none of this sounds as good as when it is performed with E-Street. I love Springsteen live. LOVE HIM! I don't just mean being at the concert, but I love the other two Live DVDs. I have only had Barcelona for a year and I have worn it out in spots. Many times I don't even watch, I just put it on with the surround sound while I'm doing whatever, like a live album (if you are wondering how I can say this while some reviews here imply that this DVD is better, I think they are refering to the audio, to which I say, go see my review of that DVD - I'm still dumbfounded by what some have said about the sound). If you need proof, just put 'em side by side. The chintzy-sounding "Atlantic City" on this DVD, or the thundering, emotionaly-charged version on the New York DVD? "Light Of Day" from New York is a funny and invigorating powerhouse! The version here feels like someone else's pale imitation. Granted, with both tracks, maybe they just aged better as he ironed out these obvious wrinkles over the years.

At any rate, of the DVDs, why get the one that feels like an imiation or a work in progess? Better yet, why get one that doesn't show Bruce in his true element with the best band? Not just his best band, but maybe the best backing band in rock history.

Now, I am a completist fan of Springsteen, so I enjoy having this item just as a collectable. And, again, I like a few of the performances here. I hate to sound too down on it. Think of it this way; I gave the New York and Barcelona DVDs 5-Stars. If I could have given them 15-Stars (or more) I would have. This one I'm giving 3. And that feels just about right.

Recorded in 1994, Bob Dylan: MTV Unplugged is a brilliant, quietly impassioned performance by one of pop music's most significant figures. Fronting his empathetic five-piece band (Bucky Baxter excels on dobro, mandolin, and pedal steel guitar; Bob himself plays frequent "rhythm leads" on his Martin), Dylan performs four of his best-known and potentially most overdone tunes in the 73-minute show; but "All Along the Watchtower," "The Times They Are A-Changin'," "Like a Rolling Stone," and "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" all sound great, with Dylan, as is his wont, re-casting both the arrangements and melodies. Even better is the obscure "John Brown" (written in the early '60s but apparently unreleased by Dylan until now), a driving, biting war protest song of the kind that made him famous, while "Dignity," a lesser-known tune from the '90s, is filled with great lines ("Met Prince Phillip at the home of the blues... said he was abused by dignity"), and "Shooting Star" revisits Oh Mercy, Dylan's best '80s album. Through it all, Dylan says nary a word, although he does smile and shake some hands (even removing his shades) at the end. And as good as it may be, this show is most likely different from every Dylan concert before or since, a sure sign of an artist in no danger of becoming irrelevant. --Sam Graham

Just before he got to be an Old Man.......2007-02-16

This is a great lesson in how one generation sees another. Bob on Mtv is one more proof that he wasn't just a voice of us Baby Boomers, see how easily The Times They Are A'Changin fits NOW. Dig the way new phrasing of old material just plain rocks, like Desolation Row. Timelessness and the power of the music smacks you upside the head even when you're looking for it.

This DVD is made by MTV, and it's got weird lighting, that's of course, really cool. The songs are good, & Bob was young-ish, so buy it for sure, or you'll never own a Bob Dylan DVD. (He signed each disc himself (not really.)). It's all acoustic, even the upright bass player. He uses no elctric guitars, but it's still really good.

Bob Dylan doesnt release a lot concert DVDs. So when one comes along, they have to appreciate it for its rarity and value. I watched this DVD several times and it's great to experience another dimension to him that is not found in his quintessential albums. Get this DVD right now even if you are a casual Bob Dylan listener.

The troubador tells a tale.......2006-03-26

Dylan is of course the master of the political lyric. With this set of songs it takes one on a jouney back through time, to HIS roots. The selection of songs is outstanding. The throat catches on occassion with the truth in his word. The band meshes incredibly well with all players giving a more than credible performance. Despite the fact that organ and pedal are plugged, without them the performance would not have been as great.
Stellar performance by the folk singer!!

Hmmmm.......2007-04-01

If you expect this work to be an extension of the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill you will be sorely disappointed. I'm not saying this work is bad, it's just Ms. Hill took a very different direction musically. It's hard to describe what to expect on this album. It's a very personal, deep, acoustic folk experience!!

Music is an Art Form, Singing is an Art Form and Poetry is an Art Form but Truth is an Art Form not commonly practiced whether in the secular or sadly in the Religious world...This poetic, political, artistic and spiritual purging cannot be for those looking for the Lauryn who was slickly produced (in MisEducation) because this Lauryn UnPlugged is Truth! After listening to the CD and Spiritually connecting to the words, when I saw the DVD it fully supported the view of someone fighting to express a growing person thru art. Yeah You Go Girl!

impressive but............2004-06-14

I'm a Lauryn Hill fan and I purchased this DVD cus of the positive reviews posted this site. She's really good, no doubt about that. Her voice was cracking a lot of times though. You could really feel what she's saying. Not bad with the guitar also. When the track starts, you'll get into it, after a while you'll loose focus cus there's too much adlib. I'm sure the audience felt the same way. Some were already out of it. She's really good but there's too much adlib. She also talks too much in between tracks. An hour and 45 minutes with only 13 songs..... go figure

Keeping It Real.......2004-05-01

I have not yet viewed the live performance, but just from the cd alone I have never experienced an artist so real. I have never met people in life as real as she is. She reveals who she is in the most intimate way. She tears away the layers of herself right in front of you. Her lyrics are sublime and the song arrangements are profound!!!! After you have listed to this album it is like you were given a ticket of admission into Lauryn's heart & soul! This is a must. High praise & respect to Ms. Hill is deserved.

All I can say is, your eyes will be glued to the screen, and your ears will want to hear more. If there truly was an example of what the nature of UNPLUGGED is all about, this video would be the one. Lauryn Hill bares all in this heart wrenching delivery of raw feeling,thoughts and talent. Every song had a powerful burst of spirituality and thought provoking lyrics that were so deep I could hardly believe what I was hearing. In this video Lauryn had an open realness to her beauty, not the dressed up superstar look she had before, but more of a natural, this is me take it or leave it appeal; every facial expression showed her heartfelt emotional connection to each song, and she sucked me into her reality everytime she spoke. Each note that she hit or missed showed the truth about her humanity, yet it never took away from the respect or adoration she commanded from her stage presence. I give this Unplugged video 5 stars just because it is the most honest, beautiful performance I've ever seen.

Over the last few years I've been aware of a band named Staind and I've also recently found over this time I've accumulated a good awareness of Staind music and history. I've grown to find that Staind is not just about depression like some people here mentioned; it's about emotion - strong emotions. Some people express deep emotions that touch at the heart of their souls; Aaron Lewis is sharing his journey through life. I have a deep respect and admiration for this band and their art.

Staind - MTV Unplugged has to be one of my favorite Staind performances on DVD. Check it out, you won't be sorry!

Die-hard fans please ignore...

As a musician I have an appreciation for a very wide range of music so I purchase pretty much every music DVD produced. After checking out Staind's MTV UNPLUGGED DVD all I can say is this band and it's music are just plain horrible.

The theme of every song is either based on anger, depression, lonliness, paranoia or any other thing this guy can whine about.

The show is one long depressing song with the same dull tempo and basic chord changes... if you are into that kind of thing I guess this is the best DVD in the world!

Performance notes:

These guys must be pitch deft, the guitars are either out of tune or they are such bad musicians they can't even play this extremely simple music properly...

The singer has a drony voice and sings off key 80% of the time... if you can actually endure the songs it's hard to believe you can put up with the bad singing.

Let's not forget his great personality between songs... basically "ughh... this next song is I Hate Everybody/Life Sucks/My Parents Are Jerks/Relationships Suck/etc...

DVD notes:

Picture is typical of these MTV shows... nothing to write hone about, but a clear 4:3 transfer with adequate lighting.

Sound of 5.1 track is very processed and hollow sounding... stick with the 2.0 track if you actually want to listen to this garbage...

Look for my copy on eBay!

I feel ripped off and am so angry right now. I can not believe the idiotic censorship on this DVD. The word "$hit" is blanked out of the performance of Mudshovel basically ruining it. And to show how idiotic and senseless this censorship is you can see the word spelled out for all the world to see on the subtitles!!! It gives you that same feeling as when you are watching a good R rated movie on TV and its all hacked up with blanked out dialog. There is no disclosure that the video has been hacked in the description by Amazon. Avoid buying MTV products unless you are an 11 year old's mother.

Mana - The Best Rock Group In Mexico.......2005-02-08

I've been buying CD's of the group Mana since about 1995. This DVD has many of my favorite songs.

To me, it seems like this DVD is a compilation of most of their mellower songs. As a result, I would think that anyone listening would find the music on this DVD enjoyable.

I was a little annoyed by the recording quality because I felt that they had cut too much of the main singer's voice and the drums out.

This recording is done with a live set of musicians for the violins and other non-rock instruments. I could be wrong, but I would guess that the person in charge of mixing the music favored the instrumental side of the recording and made the mistake of not letting the group be what they really are, that is the best damn rock group in Mexico.

Final conclusion: They shouldn't have cut the vocals and drums so much, but it's still a good DVD.

This was Mariah in one of her finest moments. She got a lot of criticism for not touring for her first album like everybody else. Well, she sure showed them that she does know how to put on a great show. Every performance in this video was just of such perfection but "Can't Let Go" was my personal favorite. If you're a big Mariah fan, this is one video you have got to add to your collection. And if you're not a fan, you would be doing yourself a favor when you buy this one because you will surely become one. This gem is definitely a MUST-BUY!
