Sheryl Crow fans looking for a straightforward concert video can't go wrong with this 83-minute set, recorded in Detroit during the Globe Sessions tour of early 1999. Appearing in black leather pants and a black string-strap top, Cheryl's poised and professional, driving through 15 songs (9 from The Globe Sessions) with studio-set precision, despite the handicap of a receptive but oddly lifeless audience. (Perhaps the Motor City was merely idling that night.) Moving from acoustic guitar to bass, electric guitar, harmonica (on "It Don't Hurt"), and finally piano (for an exquisite rendition of "Home"), the Grammy winner makes it clear that she's as musically skilled as she is drop-dead gorgeous. Accompanied by a flawless six-piece band (with honorable mentions to guitarist Peter Stroud and violinist Lorenza Ponce), Crow rocks when it's time to rock (the climactic jam on "Riverwide" and "If It Makes You Happy" being standouts), but her strength remains in the more delicate passages of "Am I Getting Through," "The Difficult Kind," "Stong Enough," and the aforementioned "Home," an encore visually enhanced by rural images projected on an upstage scrim.

Crow dedicates the set-closing rocker "Mississippi" to Bob Dylan, and even if a few favored hits are not included, this remains a noteworthy performance. Camera coverage is slick and editing tight, and while VHS viewers will likely be satisfied, the DTS DVD is mildly problematic, failing to achieve the "you-are-there" dynamics that videophiles have a right to expect. Fortunately, the concert itself is not compromised; the recording is crisp and carefully mixed. Crow no doubt had more lively gigs during this particular tour, but with an accommodating stage and a first-rate band in good spirits, this was a pretty good night to have the cameras around. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Love Sheryl Crow -- Hate this Sound Mixing.......2004-10-20

Lovely, highly talented, Sheryl Crow is a joy to listen to and look at while she's singing. However, if you are a highly sensitive audiophile, pass on this DVD. The sound mixing is an embarassment to any professional. Sub-standard doesn't describe the sound mixing on this DVD. It's so bad some instruments are barely audible, and Sheryl's voice is set at a lower level than the drums at times. Shame, shame.

For me, though, I got it at a six dollar price and it's worth it just to get to watch Sheryl do her thing (yeah, baby).

4 out of 5 stars A worthwhile purchase despite its issues.......2003-12-08

Most of the negative comments surrounding this DVD are valid, yet I decided to give it a try and I was pleasantly surprised. Even though the sound mixing is substandard, Sheryl's performance is quite good. In addition, it's nice to have footage of Sheryl singing her lesser-known (but still high-quality) songs such as "Am I Getting Through" and "Riverwide." Customers should buy this DVD despite its flaws.

3 out of 5 stars Adequate performance, substandard sound.......2003-09-13

I wanted to add the DVD to my 5.1 surround sound collection of concerts because most of Crow's hits I liked. Although her performance is adequate enough, I didn't care for some of the less-well-known songs. Mainly, however, the sound mix is pretty bad. The stereo is weak, the Dolby Digital 5.1 is almost as bad as the stereo, with little definition. The DTS is almost adequate, but not quite. It is nowhere near as good as the James Taylor "Pull Over" DVD or the Eagles "Hell Freezes Over" DVD. It's not even as good as the marginally acceptable Nora Jones "Live in New Orleans" DVD. But if you're a Sheryl Crow fan, go ahead and add this to your collection. You might be reasonably satisfied.

4 out of 5 stars Tweak for better sound in Dolby Stereo.......2003-09-05

Bought this DVD Yesterday. I play it in Dolby Stereo, Sound is not that well mixed. That said it is very entertaining and you can solve this sound problem if you juggle the bass and treble dials a bit. If compared to "The Eagles - Hell Freezes Over", this is noway near as well balanced, but it really captures the "Sheryl Crow Live" experience. There are much better mixed DVD's, but this is far from a bad buy. Buy it, you will not regret it.

2 out of 5 stars Soundly disappointed.......2003-01-26

Sheryl Crow is a great talent and this DVD makes that abundantly clear. Unfortunately, the quality of the sound mix is substandard. If you listen to it in ordinary stereo, it is almost impossible to understand the lyrics. In multi-channel mode, it's only marginally better. Some reviewers have compared this DVD's sound unfavorably to that of the Eagles' Hell Freezes Over which has great sound. Those folks are correct. However, the difference is not the technology because the Eagles sound fine in two channel stereo.
